Three Microtrends I Love RN.

By: Jen Shoop

Microtrend: Dramatic Smocking.

There’s nothing new about smocking, but I’ve been seeing it crop up along collarbones and in dramatic display. Below, a few of my favorite finds:

BASICALLY ANYTHING BY LORETTA CAPONI — I ALREADY OWN THIS (SEEN AT TOP OF POST) AND AM EYEING THIS STUNNER

THE $39 STEAL I’VE BEEN WEARING ALL QUARANTINE LONG

THIS BREEZY DOEN OR THIS ONE (SEEN ABOVE)

THIS FUN FLORAL MAXI (UNDER $100)

THIS SAUCY ZIMMERMANN (70% OFF!!!)

Microtrend: Exaggerated Collars.

It started with on the runway with this exaggerated lapel collar Miu Miu (seen above), and now this pilgrim-chic look is everywhere. My favorite finds:

THIS DOEN (SEEN ON JENNY WALTON ABOVE)

THIS LADYLIKE STEAL

THIS RBG-INSPIRED BEAUTY

THIS ZARA SCORE (SO SIMILAR TO THE MIU MIU)

THIS MARCH-SISTER-ESQUE DRESS

THIS DRAMATIC EMBROIDERED POPLIN DRESS ($49!)

THIS DRESS FROM CULT-FOLLOWING-ONLY BRAND VITA KIN

Microtrend: Vintage-looking Floral Textiles.

A big one right now — so feminine, so Emma, so grandmillennial. The snap above nails the smocking AND floral vibe perfectly. A few of my favorite finds:

THIS DOEN (SEEN ABOVE — BUT HONESTLY ANYTHING FROM DOEN)

THIS STUNNING SKIRT (ON SUPER SALE)

THIS DITSY PRINT ON THIS DRESS HAS A LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE VIBE TO IT, AND I LOVE IT

THIS GORGEOUS (HEAVILY DISCOUNTED) BROCK COLLECTION — SWOON

SUNHATS WITH VINTAGE RIBBONS

THE ROQUEFORT PRINT AVAILABLE IN SEVERAL REFORMATION DRESSES RIGHT NOW

THIS FEMININE DRESS

THIS $35 SKIRT

THIS FOR LITTLE ONES!

P.S. This pandemic has really made me question whether I am a city mouse or a country mouse at heart.

P.P.S. What to do when you can’t sleep.

P.P.P.S. My favorite things right now.

  1. Yes to these micro-trends! I bought that Loretta Caponi-esque Zara dress back in March (on your recommendation) and it has been a great “house dress” during lockdown ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m sliiiightly on the fence about the exaggerated-collar trend, but I do quite like that Dรดen and the Vita Kin dress!

    1. AGREE — that dress is the perfect house dress and I like how it looks with the sleeves pushed up to the elbows. Landon calls it my grandma dress but…eh. I’ve never shied away from a trend I like ๐Ÿ™‚

    2. That’s so funny; that’s how I feel re: sleeves as well! It looks SO much better with elbow-length sleeves. I’m 5’4″ and I feel like if I have the sleeves to their full length, it’s too much fabric โ€” maybe because of the high neck? In any case, I dig it. ๐Ÿ™‚ xx

  2. Love todayโ€™s post… especially the โ€˜snapโ€™ of the floral dress with high ruffled neck- do you know where to find?? Thanks!!

  3. Big yes from me for all things floral! I have long loved a floral print – it feels very British and reminds me of Cath Kidston. I am happily in the grandmillennial camp!

Iโ€™m struggling with the smocking trend. Most of what I buy needs to be work appropriate. I struggle to find items with smocking that would work in an office setting. Maybe I just need to forget the office and get something for my out-of-office wardrobe ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Yay! Love a good floral.

I hear you – smocking has a kind of vintage/casual/nightgown vibe that doesn’t fit in as well in a traditional office space! Maybe you can just have a pretty “house” dress instead ๐Ÿ™‚

      xx
