The Ol’ Black and Tan

By: Jen Shoop

I’ve talked about this a.lot, but neutrals have been my best friend this season.  I’ve been particularly drawn to pairing nudes/mushrooms/greiges/taupes with black — the pairing somehow looks put-together, chic, and upscale with minimal effort.  I’m particulary into blouses in a subdued palette, like this two-tone Chris & Jamie top ($196, Thistle and Clover), paired with black skinnies (love my J. Brands), and an unexpectedly flouncey clutch  (adore the rosette style — $65, TopShop):

I’d finish with an oversized-bead necklace (Marni, $360, Net-A-Porter) and some pointy-toed black flats ($168, Simply Soles):

I’m also loving the idea of a straight-forward black tee dress (on super sale for $69, Hayden-Hartnett) beneath this minimalista-chic topper (adore the unfussy shape — on sale for $49, Spiegel):

Spruce up with some leopard footwear — I’ve got the flats and the pumps, but am I bold enough to channel Olivia Palermo with a pair of feminine leopard booties?  (She owns these Charlotte Olympias.)  I’ll probably stick with a classic flat — these Lanvins have been on my lust list for the past few months ($525, Zoe):

Round it out with a slouchy statement leather bag (on sale for $275, J. Crew), some serious earcandy ($48, J. Crew), and a stack of bangles ($98 for 3, Henri Bendel):

Earlier this season, I snapped up a silky cargo dress similar in shape and styling to this See by Chloe number (on sale for $142, The Outnet), which I like pairing with pumps in my favorite fabric of the season: suede (Charles David, $124, Zappos):

I’d add some eye-catching studs, like these vintage Chanels ($577, ASOS) and a coordinating black suede tote (love the exaggerated tassel accent! –Vanessa Bruno, $522, Matches):

Alternately, for a slightly dressier affair, I’m loving this feminine Tucker dress ($425, Net-A-Porter) paired with glossy pointy toed flats (Sam Edelman, $99, Zappos) and a ladylike barrel bag ($495, Henri Bendel):

The only thing I’d add?  Some fetching earrings ($20, TopShop) and a classic camel coat ($240, John Lewis):

For casual weekend wear, I like a drapey, oversized, cape-esque knit top in cozy cashmere (I’m into dolman sleeves in a big way this season — on sale for $130, Uniqlo) paired with leggings and structured black low-wedge boots ($500, Jade24):

Offset it all with an unexpected nude tote ($96, Lori’s Shoes), some chain-accented studs ($160, My Sugarland), and a statement piece necklace ($93, Zappos):

I’d probably layer it all beneath a gauzey leopard scarf ($78, Madison LA):

Another choice low key outfit in the appointed palette?  A nude blouse (Joie, $195, Thistle and Clover) paired with black skinnies and some amazing two-tone flats ($191, Pretty Ballerinas):

I like a little black envelope flap bag ($88, J. Crew) as the accoutrement —

And maybe a no-nonsense pair of solid gold studs ($85, Bing Bang NYC) and a polished gold bracelet ($175, CCSkye):

Alternately, how beyond is this little camel knit turtleneck sweater (which Olivia Palermo was spotted in just a week or two ago, and which I featured on my {magpie covets} page — she is too chic! — $435, Les Nouvelles) with some black skinnies and booties ($398, Scoop NYC):

I’d add coordinating bangles (House of Harlow, $113, Nordstrom) and a glossy gold ring ($150, CCSkye):

Alternately, go with a patterned black and tan palette with this See By Chloe shift, paired with these feminine booties (Miu Miu, $551, Farfetch):

Add a layered necklace (Jill Golden Cheyne, $290, Les Nouvelles) and a glossy handbag (Phillip Lim, $795, La Garconne):

You can’t  go wrong with these basics.  Which is your favorite look?
