The weather has turned crisp and autumnal in Manhattan and I’m suddenly very aware of the holes in minimagpie’s fall wardrobe. I instantly ordered a wear-with-everything navy cardigan and these cableknit tights in every color — they’re my favorite. Thick, warm, and hold up well in the wash. I sadly retired her Natives Shoes, which were ESSENTIAL over the summer when she was in and out of splash pads all the live long day and swapped in a new pair of Cienta t-straps in red. And while I should have then focused my sights on layering staples, I instead found myself trying to legitimize the $27 shipping fee for this absolutely precious gingham set from La Coqueta, shown above and below. My heart! I will find a way to weasel that into mini’s wardrobe, possibly by waiting for it to crop up at The Tot whenever they restock. (Incidentally, I bought this La Coqueta dress while on sale in anticipation of next Easter.)
Back to staples: I had been on the lookout for pima cotton peter pan collar onesies/tops. I used to buy them in multiples from Kissy Kissy (<<these are really the best; extremely durable and so soft) but am finding it hard to track down sizes over 18-24M and mini is really tall. I am kicking myself for not ordering a few extra of these ones from Spanish line Babidu back when I placed a larger order at SweetPeaKids (a London-based e-boutique) and was willing to justify international shipping. (I also snagged this, which is perfection.) The Babidu style is just what I was looking for — very similar to Kissy Kissy and fairly cheap, too! I did find these discounted Jojo Maman Bebes though, which will do the job well!

P.S. Mini is in itty bitty “twinkle toes” pre-ballet classes. It’s the freaking cutest thing of my life. They actually requested that the girls wear ballet slippers, if you can believe it! I ordered these (adorable) and, along with my favorite ILovePlum tutus, got her one of these, which is decently well made for the price. I also fished this book out of a big chest in which we are storing toys and books that are too mature for mini at the moment — she loves this book now! I am surprised at how well she is doing with longer books with thinner pages. She will sit and listen to the entirety of Curious George, which is not as short as you’d think. Anyway, the Matilda book would be a really nice treat for a child in a family of multiple siblings. It’s partly about ballet but mainly about making space for yourself in a large family.
P.P.S. We have given this as a gift to several little boys turning three this year and it has been a big hit. I think it must be around the age when kiddos are learning about rockets — but we also liked it because it teaches them the basics of physics!
Re: the hunt for Peter Pan collared onesies – I have purchased from Boden but find their onesies to run VERY small. Sweaters are gigantic, pants are true to size, but onesies = small.
I’ve actually bought Peter Pan style onesies for my daughters from H&M of all places. They go up to size 2-3Y, which is great because my children are also tall. The cotton is soft, the collar stays down, and they are a little stretchy (probably not 100% cotton) which is fine by me because I think they are less wrinkly. Also they are less than $10!

Have you tried the collared onesies from Boden? I love love love Boden (for mini and for me!) but can really only justify for mini for special occasions. I haven’t gotten any of these shirts but did get one from the Gap and the collar would. Not. Stay. Down. Curious if the Boden or the kissy kissy versions have the same issue.
Also, if you’re interested in science-y books for younger kids, check out baby university. We received General Relativity For Babies as a first birthday gift. My SIL says it’s my nephew’s favorite! However it has not yet surpassed Pout Pout Fish as my girl’s favorite 😉
Hi! I have not tried Boden yet – thanks for the suggestion! Completely agree on Gap; I tried theirs last winter and was uber unimpressed. I also felt like the sleeves were baggy in a weird way. Kissy Kissy collars definitely stay put!

Stomp rockets + a book (Curious George and the Rocket for our 3 year daughter’s old pals and Magic Schoolbus for our 4 year old pals) are our go to as well these days! A rocket + book set is sitting here waiting to be wrapped for a birthday celebration this weekend. I love giving the gift of a science lesson/ reason for kiddos to get outside

That gingham set is the cutest. BUT. I am on a shopping ban after pulling out all of the baby’s 24m/2T clothes and realizing that I’ve been buying a ton in that size because it felt so far off. Well. Until fairly recently, the baby was just a wee bit shorter than average… but now she’s shot up and wearing all those 24m/2T clothes! (Though she’s skinny, so non-legging bottoms just fall off of her). It doesn’t all fit in her closet! And it’s definitely not all “play” clothing – but too bad, she’s now going to be overdressed for everything because by golly, she’s wearing it all, even if she’s the child who shows up to a playdate at the zoo wearing something that has a crinoline underneath.
(I guess I could start stocking up on 3T clothes?? Or maybe she’s over her growth spurt and will be this size for awhile??)
Can’t wait to hear how ballet goes – sounds so adorable, all those little babes in their tutus and cute little bitty ballet shoes! We just started gymnastics (no baby dance classes near me, sadly), and the baby’s eyes just lit up when the instructor did a somersault. She’s been trying for ages but hasn’t figured out what to do yet – she’ll figure it out soon though, I bet!
OMG, a somersault! It’s incredible what these little ones can do. I have to admit I was skeptical that mini would be able to follow instructions like “stomping around like an elephant” and “releve,” but she does! It’s unbelievable!
I’m with you on the sizing. I am also baffled by the sizing. Some of the 2T dresses I bought her are ENORMOUS. And mini is super tall — like 90th percentile of height tall! And others are already too small, especially pants. It seems bizarre that we’ll jump from a size 2T to a 3T when we’ve been buying in monthly increments for so long! Wahhh!
