Weekend Vibes, Edition No. 42: The One with the Sneakers She Finally Bought.

By: Jen Shoop

My Latest Score: The GG Sneaks.

I finally did it, so now I can shut up about them.  I bought this pair (on sale!).  This pair is available at an even steeper discount, but I wanted a classic white with gold detailing.

You’re Sooooo Popular: The Festive Blouse.

The most popular items on Le Blog this week:

+This very chic and festive blouse.  (But don’t forget these.)

+My best friend at night.  (Always on my nightstand!)

+I’m very excited to have this in mini’s stocking for Christmas!

+My favorite lip balm ever, in a kit where you can try tons of different shades.  LOVE.

+Elegant camel coat.

+If you don’t have this in your kitchen, you haven’t lived.  (…?)

+My new solution to cosmetics organization.

#Turbothot: Wedding Bands.

Do you wear your wedding band?  Does your significant other?

I was just thinking, a propos of this post, that I would feel completely naked and ill-at-ease without mine, but that there are tons of women and men who never wear theirs.  I have friends who will show up without theirs on and shrug and say, “Oh, I guess I forgot to put it on after I showered,” or “I didn’t feel like wearing it today.”  I legitimately never take mine off, unless — apparently — I’m mixing meatballs.  Every few months, I will use a solution of water and windex, applied with a toothbrush, to clean it.  (…Is that bad?  As soon as I wrote that down, I realized maybe that’s not kosher.  I should look into that.  I’ve probably been unknowingly whittling away at my diamond’s value through this wanton abuse.)

Why do I wear mine?  I like the daily reminder of our vows to one another.  I like the public declaration that I belong to someone else.  I like the way it looks.  I like the way it makes me look.  I like that when I look down, I recall those awkward teen years I spent daydreaming about my future husband, and I feel so glad that I’ve met my mate.  I have made some questionable decisions in my life (would I tell mini to pursue degrees in literature and then not go into academia?  hm.), but marrying Mr. Magpie was a no-brainer and the best thing I’ve ever done.  We are a unit, and wearing the ring is a testament to that bond.  A sacrament, in the most literal of connotations.  (Did anyone else have to memorize the word sacrament in Catholic grade school?  I can still repeat it, verbatim, simultaneously experiencing the deep-rooted, stomach-turning fear that Monsignor Montgomery would call on me to recite it at will: “An outward sign of God’s grace!”)

I’m sure there are others who would argue that a physical symbol is unnecessary — a crutch, a feel-good, a nothing — and that true relationships don’t need such reminders.

What do you think?  Do you wear yours?  Why/why not?

#Shopaholic: The Affordable Sundress.

+This well-priced sundress so many of us bought over the summer has been re-stocked in the cutest colors — just in time for winter vacation.  I like the blue floral or navy.

+Goop is having a great sale.  A lot of the pieces went too quickly for this slow-moving shopper, but these….!!!!

+OMG these Maison Labiche embroidered tops!  I am dying over this “bad girl” one and this “femme fatale.”

+On-trend sweater at a good price.

+For your mini — how amazing is this.

+These polka dots are fun!

+You’d be a knockout at a winter wedding wearing this.  #SOCHIC

+PERFECT GIFT for a godchild making their First Communion!

  1. I love the GG sneaks you picked out! I am more of a Common Projects girl when it comes to expensive sneakers, but I really like the gold-on-white, and they seem to have less of a pre-distressed vibe than other pairs I’ve seen.

I am not married (yet!) but I have a feeling I’ll be like my mom when it comes to her rings and n.e.v.e.r. take them off. She had to take her engagement ring off to be repaired when I was about 10 years old and burst into tears when it came off! She made my dad re-propose to her when it came back all fixed. Haha!

Love Maison Labiche as well — I have an embroidered sweatshirt from them that features the word ‘amazing’ in pink. 🙂

    1. Love Common Projects, too — a good friend owns a pair and rocks them OUT. That sweatshirt sounds precious!

  2. Have you ever heard of the Diamond Dazzle Stik? Just picked one up waiting in line at the Container Store. Such an easy way to clean your rings, they look so shiny after a quick clean!

  3. I only take mine off to make meatballs (or burgers) too! I’m terrible and usually slip it in my back pocket though and have occasionally forgotten to put it back on (and subsequently tossed my jeans into the laundry with my rings still inside). I feel so naked without my wedding band/engagement ring that I actually drove back home to retrieve them my when I noticed I left without putting them back on.

    1. I would totally turn around and drive home! EEEK, rings in the laundry machine! Sounds like something I would do.

  4. My husband and I have matching, very slim wedding bands. We both wanted something understated, and the jeweler suggested we create a matched set. I like knowing the twin of my ring is on his hand. It’s like an elevated friendship bracelet to me. Significant, permanent, signifying. Having the physical signifier of marriage was important to both of us. My husband also designed my somewhat unusual engagement ring, and had it made in his home country. I like wearing a piece of him like that.

Like you, I almost never take my rings off. The exception? Touching raw meat!! The thought of raw chicken or meatballs touching my rings or getting stuck between them grosses me out. I keep a Waterford ring stand in our kitchen to stash them on. The ring stand was a gift from my aunt/godmother when I turned 16. It has a spike on it so the rings don’t slide around. It is totally over the top, but it makes me smile when I use it.

    1. Love that — especially that the ring stand was a childhood gift. So special. And your rings sound incredible!!
