Velveeta.

By: Jen Shoop

For Christmas in high school, one of my closest girlfriends bought me a burgundy velvet blazer.  She insisted I could pull it off.  To that velvet blazer:

Dear Velvet Blazer — Why didn’t I keep you in my closet?  Why have you come back into vogue with such a vengeance, leaving me at a loss for why I ever, ever, ever “clean out my closet”?  You are making a strong case for storing clothing as long as possible.  I already regret chucking a pair of awesome cowboy boots (why why why why) that I have since wanted to wear about 23 distinct times.  Don’t make me more of a hoarder than I already want to be.

In the meantime, it looks like I’ll need to find a replacement for you.  This time, I’ll be a little smarter about parting ways.

Hope you’re enjoying your new home, wherever that may be.

PS.  In case you’re doubting your own stylishness, I present to you exhibits A-D:

And here are some candidates for your replacement — my new velveteen score:

+DVF long wrap dress ($598).  Swoon.  For a Christmas wedding?!?!

+Gianvito Rossis (on sale for $473).  Die.  D.i.e.  Guys, one of my biggest regrets was not snagging a pair of those freaking Alexandre Birman velvet Clarita sandals in burgundy or forest green velvet when they went on sale at Net-A-Porter.  IDIOT.

+What do we think about chokers?  Too Kardashian?  I’m intrigued by some of these affordable ones from Dannijo ($50).

+Reformation wrap skirt ($168).

+I snagged these Sam Edelman velvet pumps ($119).  Too good.

+Shift dress ($543).

+Velvet crest flats ($48).

+Velvet lace-trim dress ($100).

+Envelope clutch ($95).

+Gianna Mara heels (on sale for $123!!)

Now, these are NOT burgundy but mix n match in all the right ways:

+I saw this velvet bow clutch and literally swooned and ordered it on the spot.  $128.  (!!!!!)

+Velvet tank ($88).

+Faux fur stole ($49).

+OMG THESE FLATS ($228).  I die.  Too good too good too good!!!

+Self-Portrait lace dress (on sale for $322!!!)

+Navy velvet flat (Jil Sander, $495).

+Love cross velvet bag ($295).

+Lace skirt ($128).

  1. I am a new follower–I LOVE your blog. I love the midi lace SKIRT. the proportions are amazing. I want to snag it, BUT, I know that I will not wear this if i don’t have any closet options. What type of top? I’m apple shaped…
    Any recommendations?

  3. I honestly cannot get on board with the choker movement (so sorry to anyone who has made the leap onto the bandwagon), there are just certain trends I feel are best left to the past!

But I can get on board with burgundy velvet, I adore all your picks! I am dying over that Topshop number, I’m so bummed it’s only in mini sizes! And those Gianvito Rossi pumps? LOVE. I have been obsessing over the Natural Business Dusty Pink beauties that are sold out everywhere, but oh so chic. Thanks as always for sharing!
