That Boom Boom Pow

By: Jen Shoop

Today, on this cold, mid-December Tuesday, all I wanna do is have some fun.  {Yeah, I said it.  Sheryl Crow.}  In TFM terms, this means — throw on something bold/neon and therefore mildly inappropriate for a winter day and strut around like I know what’s up.  Something with a little edge, a little street cred (…?) — something that channels the gutsy energy of this Nicole Cohen print ($325), which I — incidentally — really must figure out how to purchase soon-ish.  {Imagine it against a gray wall in an otherwise elegantly appointed study.  BAM.}

Of course, anything by Jenni Kayne would fit this bill, but since I’m not made of cashiola, I’m day-dreaming of more affordable luxuries, like this reversible clutchski I found at Hammocks & High Tea (I featured the chevron-lined style yesterday, but check out the variation shown below in a different, equally-as-cool color/lining combo — $169, H&HT):

Fierce.  I’d rock it with a few of these tasseled bracelets, layered with other gold bangles ($125, Latitude):

How awesome?!  Makes me just about as happy as these wellies ($115, Joules), with their boom-boom-pow contrast color under-lining:

Love a little hidden surprise like that, an effect that could be similarly achieved by clustering these colorful little 6×6 canvases ($45 a pop, Him and Her) in an unexpected nook at home.  {Thanks to Erika Brechtel of Small Shop Studio, I’m on a mad dash to put together a gallery wall in our cozy Georgetown apartment, so I’ve dog-eared about 34 billion different prints, canvases, and other goodies to hang.  Erika, neither my wallet nor Mr. Magpie thank you for planting this seed.}

Oh, and P.S. — check out the rest of the unbelievable Him & Her collection while you’re at it.  This one is awesome, and would look fab with a white and navy bedroom palette.  While drooling over happy color combos, check out the bold color contrast on this mod-style shift ($693, Costume National).  Now, this would be ideal with this dark swan of a necklace by Tom Binns, though I’m almost too embarrassed to post the price… ($2,135, Net-A-Porter):

I’d wear with simple black pumps (Pour La Victoire, $250, Zappos) and a calf-hair clutchski ($78, C. Wonder):

A lucite bangle or two ($65, Pret-A-Beaute) = the only accent you need:

Speaking of hidden surprises, how sick is the BOLD yellow lining on this DVF blazer ($585, Net-A-Porter)?  I’d wear it with the sleeves rolled up and finish with a funky scarf ($24, Modcloth), some big studs (Bounkit, $295, Charm & Chain), black skinnies, and some funky little flats ($300, By Larin):

A bright blue bag is the only way to round things out, and I like this textured clutcheroo ($143, Clare Vivier):

If you’re not so much into the neons, never fear.  I got yo back.  Check out this geranium red/orange polka dot topper (on sale for $683, Marni).  Pair with big, deeply glamorous earrings ($233, Elizabeth Cole), dark denim skinnies, and these awesome, fierce skull sloafers (check out that awesome contrast grosgrain strip on the heel!  — $325, Del Toro):

I’d finish it all with the classic J. Crew Edie ($238, J. Crew), which I continue to covet, and and a gauzy white scarf to avoid looking too…structured ($195, Chan Luu):

The icing on the cake?  This slightly edgy, slightly refined cuff (Fallon, on sale for $169, Barney’s):

Yee-haw.  No better way to banish the midweek doldrums.  Another great way?  Enter my giveaway for these awesome iPhone cases from GRAPHIC IMAGE.  Check out the end of yesterday’s post for details.  You only have one more day to enter!  A winner will be announced on THURSDAY!  Woo!
