Post-Holiday Blues.

By: Jen Shoop

WAH, I am sad that Christmas is over.  I always get the post-Christmas blues, even though we were excited to get back home to our pup.  When I got home, I went on a crazy cleaning bender, mopping all of our floors, dusting everything, re-organizing cabinets, doing four loads of laundry (how we had four loads worth of laundry, I do not know — it’s just two of us and a dog right now…my bestie once commented that no one has ever done more laundry in their life than I did when we were living together; I chalk it up to my organized mother, who always had laundry days on Tuesday and Friday when we were growing up…it just feels weird not to do laundry 2 or 3x a week), and making about a trillion to-do lists.  And all this despite the fact that we have our cleaning service coming tomorrow.  When I told my mom, she laughed and said “it’s called nesting.” But it did feel nice to relax in a clean house, sleep with my maternity pillow (best gift ever from Mr. Magpie), order in dinner, and play with Tilly.  But still.  This Christmas felt extra special, with my sister flying over from London (we used to see each other on average once a month when she lived in NYC–we’d gone close to 4 months without seeing each other this time!), the most AMAZING baby shower with lots of friends I hadn’t seen in so long, two godsons to play with, and just the most cozy and delicious afternoons and evenings spent with the fam.  We had standing rib roast on Christmas Eve (mmm, so incredible with horseradish sauce and yorkshire pudding), trays and trays of cookies my Mom lovingly baked, a thousand clementines, lots of time in front of a puzzle with Christmas music, and so much laughter.  (My siblings and I played this hilarious game and I laughed so hard I cried.)  It was the best, except for the fact that my brother, sister-in-law, and nephew couldn’t make it.

To make up for the fact that I’m now in major family and friend withdrawal, and the fact that I can no longer sleep through the night and therefore typically spend several hours each night trolling around online, I’ve found some new items that have piqued my interest…

These floral flats are SO adorable, and at $120, just the kind of statement flat I can get behind.

A sweet girlfriend of mine brought us a jar of these fancy maraschino cherries ($19) as a hostess gift last year, and they have been one of Mr. Magpie’s favorite treats.  He puts them in his old fashioneds (one of his favorite post-prandial cocktails.)  I thought it was such a thoughtful gesture and great gift.  Random, but I also added this little stainless steel jigger to Mr. Magpie’s stocking and he loved it.  He’s always making fancy cocktails out of this book, which my brother gave to him–he’s OBSESSED.  Lots of obscure/old school drinks in there.  Make sure you have an ice mold on hand–Mr. Magpie loves this spherical one.

Normally around this time of year, I’m gearing up for New Year’s resolution #1: exercise more.  And with that comes some new gym duds.  Though I will be postponing fitness goals until after March this year with Mini on her way, I’ve still been perusing the racks for some inspo.  I absolutely love this burnout tee from Terez ($60) — I hadn’t heard of the label until recently, but I also love these fun leggings.  And, of course, my APLs (my mom got this pair for Christmas — such an awesome silver color).

I’m very intrigued by bodysuits.  I had an EPIC look (so good) that I never had a chance to wear before I got pregnant that involved a white ribbed body suit and some high-waisted light-wash denim…but then time got away from me and suddenly I couldn’t fit into any of my clothes.  But take a gander at a few looks for inspo:

So chic!!!  My head turned when I saw this velvet bodysuit from TopShop ($50), which would look perfect with these light-wash, boyfriend-leg jeans ($260) and velvet heels from Gianvito Rossi ($795…I loveeee these) and this Gucci mini bag ($1400…le sigh).  And if you’re not into the jeans-with-bodysuit-steez (too Kardashian?), pair the bodysuit with a skirt like this ($75).  Incidentally, PERFECT NYE look.

This oyster shell-esque necklace from ODLR (on sale for $331) is BEYOND.  Too good with just a simple white tee or button-down, or a black dress.  So funky but polished.

This feathered skirt is SO fun (on sale for $199, PLUS an extra 40% off!!!).  Great for a bride-to-be at her bachelorette, or even a last minute NYE look.  PS – Check out their entire sale section for some other great scores, like this gorgeous sweater (on sale for $119, plus 40% off), this precious jacket ($169, plus 40% off), and this burgundy fur vest ($159, plus 40% off).

This leopard maxi dress ($128) is INCREDIBLE.  Pair with velvet sandals (Gianvito Rossi, on sale for $570) for a night out, or velvet lace-up flats ($595) for a more casual daytime look.  Or even a pair of metallic slides for summer!

Oh Lord.  And so it begins.  Isn’t this mini Burberry puffer (on sale for $150) incredible?!?

These crisp poplin tops ($18!!!) from H+M are so sharp.

Also from H+M (!!!), check out this statement tote!  Looks very Gucci.

Also…

+Sweet little lace peplum top ($78).

+This denim trench dress ($128) is so my work steez.  I imagine it with a pointed toe pump or a patterned flat (like the one featured as the top pick above!).

+I snagged one of these throwback Calvin Klein racerback bras about a year ago (thanks, Kendall Jenner) and it is SO comfy.  I love it.  Now on sale for $21!

+The cheeriest coat of all time.
