Life Savers

By: Jen Shoop

I was just thinking the other day about all of the un-sung heroes of the fashion/self-styling world.  And I decided that today’s post should pay homage to those little miracle-workers that make my life that much better.

1.  Steamer

In a word — amazing.  My fashion designer sister owns the big dog industrial type that they use in stores, but I snagged this inexpensive, travel-ready mini-steamer ($29), which has been a boon on more occasions than I can count.  (Plus, its portability is genius — just throw it in your suitcase and forget your worries about showing up with wrinkled clothes.)

2.  Foot Petals

If you think about it, heels–especially of the ilk that I enjoy, i.e., as high as possible–are a peculiar innovation.  You’re essentially walking around on the balls of your feet, contorting your ankles at an unnatural angle, and thinking that you look hot while you do so.  All that said, if I had stronger stamina, I’d wear heels every day — they make me stand up straighter, they add a few inches to my diminutive height, and they make your legs look fantastic.  Foot petals ($14 for set of 2) are one trick that you should consider if you’ve not yet been introduced to their genius — pop them into your shoe (wedges below are on sale for $119!), where the ball of your foot lands, and it makes for a more cushioned, comfortable heel-wearing experience.

3.  Makeup Remover Wipes

Hello, how did I survive before these arrived on the scene?!  I use Almay oil-free wipes ($4.99) for my mascara/eye make up (don’t bother with the oil variation — who wants oil in her eyes?!) on a daily basis, and then keep a stash of Neutrogena face-cleansing wipes ($6.39) to clean my face whenever I’m too exhausted before bed and/or traveling and don’t want to pack my full facial cleanser bottle.  Below: Tory Burch cosmetic kit ($115) with my favorite mascara (Diorshow, $25)

P.S. Love this neon mini cosmetic case from TB as well — on sale for $38.

4.  Top Hats

These buddies ($30) will be your breast best friend.  (Ha, couldn’t help it.)  They keep things…discreet.  They also give you ultimate flexibility when wearing dresses with complicated straps/cut-outs or a low back.

 5.  Manicure Musts

When I’m in a bind and need to give myself a quick manicure, I rely on a few professional-grade tricks, including, most importantly, Seche Vite as a top coat ($7.99), the Essie nail corrector pen ($14 — I use this to touch up around the nail after I’m done), and — of course — great nail colors.  I love Essie!

P.S. Sorry for the radio silence…lots of BIG and EXCITING life changes going on…!  I’ll fill you in soon!
