Les Best Transitional Coats for Fall.

By: Jen Shoop

*Chic pea above wearing past-season Ganni, but don’t worry — I got you covered on current-season chic quilted coats below.

I love a lightweight coat for early fall, and quilted styles are the name of the fashion game right now. I’ve mentioned a few favorites scattered across posts the last few weeks, but thought I’d share them all together here:

THIS LONG QUILTED STYLE – LOVE THE PLAID LINING, THE HOOD, AND THE LENGTH (!!); I OWN IN BLACK

THIS, ESPECIALLY IN THE IVORY, IS SO CHIC WITH LIGHT-WASH DENIM

I OWN THIS IN A DIFFERENT FABRIC — IT IS SO LIGHTWEIGHT AND EASY TO LAYER, AND I LOVE THE COLLARLESS STYLE

A TIMELESS BARBOUR FIELD COAT — I OWN ONE FROM THIS BRAND VERY SIMILAR TO THIS STYLE IN GREEN AND IT WILL LAST A LIFETIME; MORE CASUAL THAN THE OTHER STYLES HERE

LOVE THIS BELTED STYLE

I HAVE TO SAY I LOVE THIS CROPPED QUILTED STYLE FROM THE MAKERS OF THE “UPPER EAST SIDE MOM COAT” THAT EVERYONE IN MANHATTAN WORE FOR TWO STRAIGHT WINTERS

If quilted isn’t your style, I’ve also been seeing a lot of “shackets” (shirt jackets) like this this season (not on the streets, but out by retailers). What are we thinking? It has an Isabel Marant French cool girl air to it that has me intrigued. And if I were taller, I have to say I’m influenced by the way this coat is styled on the H&M site, with all shades of ivory and those cognac brown boots. CRAZY CHIC but I am so short, I’d be swallowed alive.

If you’re looking for something more casual — love this fleece coat! SO CUTE.

And if you’re skipping fall and heading straight into winter and in the mood for an investment, this double-breasted wool coat is a lifetime piece and slightly more affordable than the Madame Coat from the brand’s prestige line. I feel like if you own a Madame Coat, you’ve made it. Look for less with this, and a bolder look with this (yowza).

P.S. Fall coats for little girls.

P.P.S. More fall bounty.

P.P.P.S. This time of year always leaves me thinking about the prayer we say at the Thanksgiving table.

  1. I am HERE for your fall roundups, and as an outerwear aficionado, I love this post!

I need another lightweight coat like I need a hole in the head, but that Everlane option has been intriguing me since it released last (?) year. I also love a good Barbour moment!

Re: shackets — I vote yes. I have a cherished navy option from Steven Alan (RIP) that is modeled off of a CPO shirt. (I personally love the heritage associated with this style, as it originated in the U.S. Navy in the early 20th century!) I only find myself wearing it a handful of times each year, but I can’t bear to part with it.

    1. I’m also into the shacket — I’ve now seen it styled so amazingly well on so many chic peas. Trying to figure out what vibe is mine in terms of fabric…

      xx
