Getting to Know You

By: Jen Shoop

I promise to return to our scheduled programming (clothes…clothes…and more clothes.) soon, but I’m in an unfocused mode and I’m kinda curious to know more about you, my lovely readers.  So.  I am going to ask a bunch o’ questions and you can either leave your responses as comments on this post OR email ’em to me.  And then I will send a special Magpie treat to one reader whose responses tickle my fancy.  (I hate that phrase — it sounds so naughty.)  SO — here goes:

1.  What indulgence do you routinely treat yourself to?

2.  How do you like to shop?  Solo, with a best bud, or in a group?  (Or something else entirely that I’m not thinking of?)

3.  What are you on the hunt for right now, clothing-wise?

4.  Your house is on fire and you have enough time to grab one thing from your closet.  (Improbable, but roll with it.)  What would you snag?

5.  Whose closet would you most like to raid?

6.  What are you wearing when you feel most confident?

7.  I would never wear _______.

8.  I wish I could wear _______.

9.  Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made?

10.  I’m saving up for _____.

…and GO.  Post your response by Monday night and I’ll announce a winner on Tuesday a.m.!

Now, I will answer myself:

1.  What indulgence do you routinely treat yourself to?

Um, I have to pick one?  First is weekly manicures.  I’m usually an Essie gal, but I’ve been wearing a lot of OPI Cajun Shrimp lately.  It’s just bright enough without bordering on neon.  My bestie and I prefer to pronounce that word with a thick Southern drawl, i.e., “shray-ump” and I find myself using that pronunciation in public.  Embarrassing.

Second is upscale underpinnings.  I set a bad precedent for myself while living in Lyon, where all of the lingerie is lovely, and I can’t kick the habit now.  I have my eye on this outrageous D & G set ($510 for top — barf! — and $430 for bottom):

2.  How do you like to shop?  Solo, with a best bud, or in a group?  (Or something else entirely that I’m not thinking of?)

There is really only one person I can shop with: my sister who lives in NYC.  I feel self-conscious in pretty much every other shopping arrangement — I don’t like feeling like people are waiting on me, or like someone’s following me around a store, commenting on everything I touch.

3.  What are you on the hunt for right now, clothing-wise?

I need some new wear-with-everything flats.  For some reason, I find flat-buying dreadful.  I’d always prefer to drop my benjamins on a pair of fab new heels.  Flats feel unexciting to me, even though I then wear them into the ground.  Wah.  Right now J. Crew’s CeCe in neon azalea has my eye.

4.  Your house is on fire and you have enough time to grab one thing from your closet.  (Improbable, but roll with it.)  What would you snag?

I know I made up this question, but it’s impossible.  I want to grab 345 things.  But.  I guess I’d pick a pair of hot pink Christian Louboutins that I bought several years ago as a treat to myself.

I think they are my favorite thing I ever bought.  Ridiculously impractical, highly painful, and just plain gorgeous.

5.  Whose closet would you most like to raid?

Kourtney Kardashian’s.  I know you’re all gasping/shocked. But I love her style — fashion-forward, slightly edgy/slick, and just adventurous/playful enough.  Plus, she’s roughly my size, so I could fit into everything and she owns a cadre of great bags (Balenciaga, Celine, Chanel — OH MY).

6.  What are you wearing when you feel most confident?

Heels and thick, black mascara (I wear DiorShow).

7.  I would never wear _______.

Hunter Boots when it’s not raining.  I hate this look.  If you must wear them for their intended purpose (splashing through puddles), then do it.  Otherwise…brown leather boots will do.

8.  I wish I could wear _______.

Shorts with heels.  I love this look.  But I always feel like I’m trying too hard when I attempt it and promptly change before leaving.  (Outfit below: Lulu Frost necklace, $238; white blouse, $98, brocade Red Valentino shorts, $320):

And, of course, majah heels (Lanvin, $975):

9.  Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made?

“Lingerie-inspired” tops were in heavy rotation during my college years.  Standard “going out” fare.  Barf.

10.  I’m saving up for _____.

Right now, I really want a Goyard tote in white or gray.  Yes.

So, now it’s your turn!  Spill!

  1. 1. What indulgence do you routinely treat yourself to?
Manicures, with Chanel nail polish; it’s chic and classic, not to mention long lasting.

    2. How do you like to shop? Solo, with a best bud, or in a group? (Or something else entirely that I’m not thinking of?)
I usually like to shop solo or with my sister. She’s direct and doesn’t go for the usual response “that looks nice” or “if you like it, take it.” she’s super forward about it; she knows my style. so if i try to take a risk in wearing something that’s not really in my “comfort” zone, she will let me know if i look like a clown/poser/fashion wannabe.

    3. What are you on the hunt for right now, clothing-wise?
a nice pair of equestrian boots and a cropped vest.

    4. Your house is on fire and you have enough time to grab one thing from your closet. (Improbable, but roll with it.) What would you snag?
YSL clutch and/or LV speedy given by my grandparents as a graduation gift.

    5. Whose closet would you most like to raid?
    Olivia Palermo’s/Jackie Kennedy’s.

    6. What are you wearing when you feel most confident?
jeans/cropped pants with tucked shirt and nice pump.

    7. I would never wear _______.
Any kind of animal print dress.

    8. I wish I could wear _______.
    Heels, all the time.

    9. Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made?
Dress used a shirt with jeans/leggins. I’m short so I decided to use a dress with jeans by adding a belt. It just made me look shorter!

    10. I’m saving up for _____.
Chanel purse; it would be a dream come true. It’s any girl’s dream, but it’s been mine for TOO long. I always seem to end up using that money for other purses/clutches or shoes.

  2. 1. What indulgence do you routinely treat yourself to?
This is easy, without a doubt, hands down…SHOES. They are my spirit animal.

    2. How do you like to shop? Solo, with a best bud, or in a group? (Or something else entirely that I’m not thinking of?)
Mostly solo. It is definitely my “me time” and therapeutic just to be in silence (aside from the constant internal dialogue…”this would look great with…etc etc”). I like to peruse every rack, every shoe, every makeup counter if i have time on my side.

    3. What are you on the hunt for right now, clothing-wise?
The PERFECT high waist flare jeans. I have always loved them, but my body is a little on the bottom heavy side and I have to find the perfect fitting pair so I don’t look like…a pear! haha. pun intended. I think they are chic, effortless, and classic all at the same time. And can be paired with a tee and blazer, silk blouse, or chunky sweater. i love versatility!

    4. Your house is on fire and you have enough time to grab one thing from your closet. (Improbable, but roll with it.) What would you snag?
Honestly I wouldn’t grab a thing b/c I’d be so worried about getting my doggies out safe! But if they were already clear of the fiery threat…I would have to say my favorite pair of skinnys. They are just too vital to my wardrobe to miss.

    5. Whose closet would you most like to raid?
This is a tough one. I think I would go with Gwyneth Paltrow. Every piece she wears is perfectly cool.

    6. What are you wearing when you feel most confident?
A great pair of heels that don’t murder my feet after 3 minutes. Probably a high waisted a-line skirt and a tank top. My shoulders, arms, and waist are my best features, so I like to show those off while concealing my giant caboose as much as possible!

    7. I would never wear _______.
Gladiator sandals. My legs just weren’t made for them so I’m not forcing the issue.

    8. I wish I could wear _______.
JCrew pencil skirts! I love all the patterns and colors, and they just DO NOT FIT my body shape. It is such a shame. Le sigh.

    9. Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made?
Too tight pants. The lateral whiskering is far from flattering and makes my legs look like sausages. ew.

    10. I’m saving up for _____.
The perfect trench. I can’t decide if I want timeless a la Burberry, or something more modern, perhaps with some leather details.

    1. Summer! Died over these thoughtful replies. It’s funny you mention gladiator sandals and J. Crew pencil skirts — I feel the same way about both. Love the look of those sandals, but they make my legs look weird and chopped off because I’m so short…and I’ve never found a pencil skirt from J. Crew that fits properly. They’re too wide for too long — I guess the proportions are meant for someone taller than I. Loving the idea of a leather-accented trench!

      1. I’ve never in my life found a pencil skirt that fit me properly, but I love the look so much that I just buy the JCrew ones anyway and get them tailored. So high maintenance! But I firmly believe in the power of tailoring to make your figure look its best. And who doesn’t want to look their best? I’ve never understood some people’s apathy in this regard. I have a tiny waist but comparatively very wide hips, so virtually everything gets nipped in at the waist!

  3. 1. What indulgence do you routinely treat yourself to?
Facemasks once a week. My skin is my obsession.

    2. How do you like to shop? Solo, with a best bud, or in a group? (Or something else entirely that I’m not thinking of?)
Only with you Mrs. Magpie! I hate feeling other people breathing down my neck and judging the things I pick up or how many times I go to the dressing room before finally choosing something completely different by the register.

    3. What are you on the hunt for right now, clothing-wise?
Leather everything for fall – skirts, jackets, even dresses.

    4. Your house is on fire and you have enough time to grab one thing from your closet. (Improbable, but roll with it.) What would you snag?
Un fashion related, but my teddy bear. Well he is the best dressed teddy bear I’ve ever seen (he rocks a pastel bow tie).

    5. Whose closet would you most like to raid?
Daphne Guinness without a doubt. She owns McQueen’s first collection ever. Enough said.

    6. What are you wearing when you feel most confident?
Something original that no one else will be wearing. Heels, of course. And lots of jewels.

    7. I would never wear _______.
    A puffer coat. Sick.

    8. I wish I could wear _______.
I know this is an eye rolling answer, but I really am game to try anything. It might be living in NYC, but honestly, you should feel like you can wear anything you want anytime you want – no matter your size or what you might percieve as your ‘imperfections’ (which no one else sees). And I’m Oprah, signing off.

    9. Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made?
One time in highschool, I was trying to copy off of an outfit you wore on a cool fall day at in Charlottesville. You had worn dark boot cut jeans, a crisp white RL button down, a pastel long sleeved tee over top (rolled at the elbows), and pointy toed shoes. I thought you looked so amazing. So, for my “free dress” day, I spent about 45 minutes trying to mimic the look and ending up showing up 25 minutes late to first period wearing: too tight brown corduroys, black pointy toed faux-leather ruched boots from Payless (thanks Mom), a child’s size large white button down, and a sheer short sleeve pale pink summer tee. Things were bulging, my pants were splitting, and my baby carrot size heels were clacking. And I had to wear the outfit for a senior class picture. Moral of the story: don’t copy anyone else. And invest in some nice basics (like good fitting jeans, a nice button down, and killer heels).

    10. I’m saving up for _____.
An entire new fall wardrobe. Help.

  4. I 100% totally agree with you on Kourtney Kardashian’s wardrobe. I love her relaxed yet chic looks. I can’t wait to answer these questions when I have more time later today!

  5. So fun. I love this post!

    1. What indulgence do you routinely treat yourself to?
Manicures at Red Door Salon. There’s just nothing like it!

    2. How do you like to shop? Solo, with a best bud, or in a group? (Or something else entirely that I’m not thinking of?)
Definitely solo. I hate making people wait on me.

    3. What are you on the hunt for right now, clothing-wise?
A fun pair of leopard smoking slippers.

    4. Your house is on fire and you have enough time to grab one thing from your closet. (Improbable, but roll with it.) What would you snag?
My J Brand skinnies. The most perfect fitting jeans!

    5. Whose closet would you most like to raid?
Reese Witherspoon. She always looks classic and put together.

    6. What are you wearing when you feel most confident?
    A LBD and high heels!

    7. I would never wear _______.
Sneakers any place other than the gym.

    8. I wish I could wear _______.
    Rompers!

    9. Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made?
A too short sequin NYE dress a few years ago. Still makes me cringe. Ugh!

    10. I’m saving up for _____.
    Tory Burch Riding Boots.

    1. 1. What indulgence do you routinely treat yourself to?

I too love a weekly (sometimes semi monthly) mani/pedi, but I think my biggest indulgence is getting my hair blown out for weddings. Its a really nice treat (although kind of a pain if you don’t have much time and have to rush). I also really like getting stuff on gilt. Some I love, some I don’t, but checking it out and pouncing on deals in the morning when I should be working is such a thrill.

      2. How do you like to shop? Solo, with a best bud, or in a group? (Or something else entirely that I’m not thinking of?)

I like to shop solo. Everyone, including my sisters, say I have to touch absolutely everything in the store, so I get called a snail shopper. I’d rather wander around solo and not take up anyone’s time.

      3. What are you on the hunt for right now, clothing-wise? I am on the hunt for the perfect pair of black leather pants/leggings. They really have to be perfect, esp. considering that every single pair I’ve seen is ridiculously expensive. I’m digging the jbrand ones at the moment.

      4. Your house is on fire and you have enough time to grab one thing from your closet. (Improbable, but roll with it.) What would you snag? I would grab a basket that has most of my purses in it…I know, not the point of your question, since you’re getting at one item, so I would probably grab my patent leather valentino beige heels. They are so beautiful and match everything, so I’m being practical.

      5. Whose closet would you most like to raid? I would love to raid your closet or Nicole Ritchie’s!

      6. What are you wearing when you feel most confident? A blazer. Well, to be specific. White jeans, tucker blouse, blazer, amazing heels, great jewels.

      7. I would never wear… a crop top. I just can’t do it. Mostly because my abs are my weakness.

      8. I wish I could wear…a herve leger dress. I own a few, have worn them, shouldn’t have.

      9. Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made? Short shirts. Not a good luck. I’m not going to say I wore bebe shirts, but baby tees didn’t really work for anyone. Also, shoes with a thick heel (well, thick platform heel throughout). Those Steve Madden shoes were terrible.

      10. I’m saving up for…a chanel bag.

      1. Loved this post, and am seriously in support of the leather pants investment. As I mentioned in my post on “Trousers,” I was thinking about getting a pair of coated denim last year as sort of “leather with training wheels” move, and they are SO chic. Also, loved when you said you’d grab your bucket of bags — that’s exactly the way I was thinking when I first crafted the question. “How much can my arms hold?” xxx

  6. 1. What indulgence do you routinely treat yourself to?
I am addicted to nail polish. I routinely purchase a new bottle to add to my collection. Nothing makes me happier than a fun, beautiful color on my polished fingers. In the past 2 years there hasn’t been 1 day that polish wasn’t on my nails.

    2. How do you like to shop? Solo, with a best bud, or in a group? (Or something else entirely that I’m not thinking of?)
I like to (slash can only) shop by myself. When I’m with a friend I feel like I always have to make sure they want to go to the same stores as I do. When I’m by myself I’m more relaxed and it’s my “Me” time.

    3. What are you on the hunt for right now, clothing-wise?
I’m on the hunt for the perfect pair of new fall black boots. I want them to be comfortable so that I can strut all over town in them, but I also want them to be cute and versatile enough to wear tucked into jeans or with a dress.

    4. Your house is on fire and you have enough time to grab one thing from your closet. (Improbable, but roll with it.) What would you snag?
I would snag my Chanel clutch that was given to me when I graduated college by my Grandma. It’s simply irreplaceable. I hardly carry it because I’m too worried I’ll ruin it but I would be devastated if I lost it.

    5. Whose closet would you most like to raid?
I would raid Olivia Palmero’s closet in a heartbeat. How is it possible for someone to always look THAT put together? I’m convinced she has a fairy godmother or something. It’s too bad if I raided her closet, absolutely nothing would fit me though. She is just so skinny! (fairy godmother help again?)

    6. What are you wearing when you feel most confident?
I feel the most confident when I am wearing my favorite V-neck raglan T, with a cute scarf, skinny jeans, and my casual brown boots. I know it’s not “Sexy” but it’s comfortable and cute which puts a smile on my face. I hate feeling uncomfortable in clothes. It makes me self-conscious and insecure.

    7. I would never wear _______.
I would never wear Crocs…… enough said.

    8. I wish I could wear _______.
I wish I could pull off the peplum top/dress trend. The way the style hits on my body is not very flattering. Tear….

    9. Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made?
My biggest fashion mistake was thinking that wearing leggings under dresses was a cute trend. I wish I could burn many outfits I thought looked cute my senior year in high school and my freshman year in college.

    10. I’m saving up for _____.
I’m saving up for my first Louis Vuitton bag. I’m a purse hoarder and I have yet to add one of these babies to my closet.

  7. 1. What indulgence do you routinely treat yourself to?
Gel manicures every 2 weeks and pedicures every 3 weeks. I talk with my hands a LOT and spend a lot of time talking for my job, thus those suckers need to look nice all the time. 🙂

    2. How do you like to shop? Solo, with a best bud, or in a group? (Or something else entirely that I’m not thinking of?)
I prefer to shop solo and really prefer to shop online. I get overwhelmed in stores, especially if I’m looking for something specific (black cardigan…and then I find 10 cocktail dresses instead).

    3. What are you on the hunt for right now, clothing-wise?
Perfect distressed medium wash skinny jeans. An oversized cozy cable knit sweater. Anything cobalt blue.

    4. Your house is on fire and you have enough time to grab one thing from your closet. (Improbable, but roll with it.) What would you snag?
hmmm, so hard! Probably a DVF jersey dress. Goes with everything!

    5. Whose closet would you most like to raid?
    Gwyneth Paltrow

    6. What are you wearing when you feel most confident?
    A dress and heels

    7. I would never wear- I’ve worn a lot of things I said I would never wear (colored jeans, ankle booties, etc..) But I’m giving the wedge sneakers a big “no ma’am”!

    8. I wish I could wear- more dresses. Almost everything is too short on me. 🙁 (I’m 5’10”)

    9. Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made? Wearing anything too tight or too short

    10. I’m saving up for- nothing in particular at the moment. I’m a bridesmaid 10x over each year (it feels like) so all extra money goes for those (lovely) dresses 😉

  8. 1. What indulgence do you routinely treat yourself to?

Highlights at a great salon and I’ve started getting haircuts very regularly…maybe these aren’t indulgences but more requirements for others?

    2. How do you like to shop? Solo, with a best bud, or in a group? (Or something else entirely that I’m not thinking of?)

Almost exclusively online, but I do find GREAT things on sale when I go into stores (usually alone, unless family is in town).

    3. What are you on the hunt for right now, clothing-wise?

A great jacket to replace my Barbour.

    4. Your house is on fire and you have enough time to grab one thing from your closet. (Improbable, but roll with it.) What would you snag?

Earrings as I have none in right now!

    5. Whose closet would you most like to raid?

Sienna Miller (I guess I’ll take her body too).

    6. What are you wearing when you feel most confident?

    A shift dress (very flattering when you’re a keg-on-sticks).

    7. I would never wear turtlenecks.

    8. I wish I could wear un-blow-dried hair.

    9. Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made?

YIKES – Juicy Couture velour jumpsuit. So embarrassing. And I was Jasmine from Aladdin first year for Halloween, complete with belly shirt. Double yikes.

    10. I’m saving up for flat boots for the winter.

PS – I got a Goyard as my diaper bag, I am obsessed 🙂

    1. Cristina! OMG, of course you have the Goyard as a diaper tote. So chic. Also, I definitely wore my fair share of velour jumpsuits — ick. I guess I blocked that “Jenny from the block” phase out for awhile…

      xxx

  9. 1. What indulgence do you routinely treat yourself to?

    Weekly hair appointment.

    2. How do you like to shop? Solo, with a best bud, or in a group? (Or something else entirely that I’m not thinking of?)

Solo or with my 8 year old daughter who has infinite patience and great advice.

    3. What are you on the hunt for right now, clothing-wise?

The perfect black suede pumps, which is harder than you think. Heel must be at least 3.5 inches, almond toe, must show a little toe cleavage.

    4. Your house is on fire and you have enough time to grab one thing from your closet. (Improbable, but roll with it.) What would you snag?

My Madewell film noir pumps in leopard. They are perfection.

    5. Whose closet would you most like to raid?

    Tracee Ellis-Ross

    6. What are you wearing when you feel most confident?

Heels and a great pattern dress.

    7. I would never wear _______.

boat shoes, they’re really popular now but they’re just not my personal style.

    8. I wish I could wear _______.

    Flats and still feel comfortable.

    9. Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made?

Ruling certain things out before actually trying them on.

    10. I’m saving up for _____.

    A Chanel.

    1. Holy weekly hair appointments! I die! I wish I had a little of that in my life. Black suede pumps — hmm, the wheels are turning now. I actually should have also indicated that I’m on the hunt for a pair of mid-calf suede boots in gray. I will never be able to find them. I had the perfect pair I found in a shop in Rome, Italy, and I literally wore them into the ground. There was a hole in the bottom and the heels had turned into metallic nubs…all this to say that I can appreciate the feeling of hunting for something you just can’t find.

      Thanks for sharing! xxxx

  10. 1. What indulgence do you routinely treat yourself to?
Sleep. No really, I’d say an at-home mani/pedi. I’m a stay at home mom with a 2 year old, so I take whatever small indulgences I can get. Sleep is really high up on that list though.

    2. How do you like to shop? Solo, with a best bud, or in a group? (Or something else entirely that I’m not thinking of?)
Most of my shopping is online these days, so I really cherish those few ocassions where I can sneak out and shop solo. It’s so nice to meander the stores and try things on in the fitting room instead of the alternative of ordering everything you think you want and schlepping it to the mall when it doesn’t fit.

    3. What are you on the hunt for right now, clothing-wise?
A new pair of black flats. I had the perfect leather, pointed toe pair from J.Crew that I wore into the ground between my pregnancy (they were the wear with everything shoe once my doctor banned heels) and one too many wearings at the park with the little one. They make them again in patent leather and I’m desperating hoping the leather ones return too: http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/shoes/flats/PRDOVR~71801/71801.jsp

    4. Your house is on fire and you have enough time to grab one thing from your closet. (Improbable, but roll with it.) What would you snag?
This is a scenario I think about whenever I pack for a plane ride: if the airline lost my suitcase, what are the things that I would be devastated if I lost? It usually comes down to the things that are irreplaceable, and those are the things I cram into my carry-on for safe keeping. Applying the same logic to my closet, I’d have to say this starfish necklace that I bought right after my daughter was born. It’s the one thing I can’t wait to wear every summer and everyone always wants from my closet. I’d like to say the answer to this question is my wedding dress, but that’s never getting worn again, so why bother rescuing it at the expense of something else?!

    5. Whose closet would you most like to raid?
Simple, Jenna Lyons. I’ve always dreamt of how amazing it would be if you had access to the archives of your favorite store – one piece of each item, in each color, in your size. I’m pretty sure her closet is the closest I’d come to that.

    6. What are you wearing when you feel most confident?
Anything that looks effortlessly chic. I hate feeling like I’m trying too hard, or wearing something that you have to constantly fuss with. It’s usually an LBD.

    7. I would never wear _______.
Crocs, mom jeans, sweats or pajamas out of the house. I will not let myself go, I will not let myself go.

    8. I wish I could wear _______.
Heels. Sounds silly, but I miss them. So impractical for my lifestyle now. They’re still about 90% of my shoe wardrobe even though I wear them about 10% of the time. Note to self: buy more flats.

    9. Biggest fashion mistake you’ve made?
Well if we totally ignore the fashion of our childhood (hello parachute suits), I’d have to say Uggs. They were one of my first adult purchases in college. Everyone else had them and I had too. Not a good look for someone who already has pretty large feet.

    10. I’m saving up for _____.
A million things! A Burberry trench remains a constant on the list though. I like building my wardrobe around well-tailored, classic items and this is the one item that’s eluded me.

    1. I loveeeed reading this, Jen! I like your mantra: “I will not let myself go, I will not let myself go.” The other day I wore leggings, an oversized poncho sweater, and ratty-ass moccasins out of the house to get some caffeine. I saw a flood of well-dressed, well-heeled young ladies strutting to the train to get to work, and I felt insta-regret. I mean, I wasn’t EXACTLY wearing P.J.s, but it was too close for comfort. Never again.

A Burb trench! AHHH! I need one, too!

  11. Thank you for providing me with a fun way to procrastinate from my thesis. This is an excellent mental break.

    1. Good natural and/or organic skin care products like Neal’s Yard and BalanceMe.

    2. Online. For sure. It gives me time to think through things before buying.

    3. A good pair of patent leather pumps.

    4. My wedding dress.

    5. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

    6. Heels and a pencil skirt.

    7. I would never wear Ugg boots.
