Covetousness.

By: Jen Shoop

I’m a little bit all over the place today.  I tried to write about 12 different posts, and they went in wildly different directions and then petered out before they wound up anywhere interesting.  (By the way, the phrase “petering out’ is kinda sad — did one bad apple ruin the reputation of generations of Peters to come?)  I guess I’m a little distracted between some intense projects at work, the random “nice” weather we’ve be having (in the 40s two days in a row after what feels like months of 10 degree weather!), and a strange kind of caginess I’ve felt for the last few weeks and will easily chalk up to winter cabin fever.  (I mean — ladies, am I crazy, or is this palm print tank kinda cool for my trip to FL in a few weeks?  I can’t tell if I’ve been over-influenced by Clover Canyon or if I’m a little nutso or if it actually would look kinda sick with white skinnies, slick black cage sandals, and my new Ray Ban mirrored sunnies?!)  Whatever’s happening, the only thing I can thread through the miscellany of objets de plaisir I am about to present is that I very seriously want to buy them.  Whether or not they are good fashion and financial decisions is another matter entirely.  You be the judges.

COVET1

So, it started with a week of free classes at a yoga studio near me (Core Power Yoga, to be precise).  Two weeks later, I’m still obsessed and now practicing at home.  I snagged an overpriced yoga mat from Lululemon (oh, how you prey on girls like me with your slick colors and promise of high quality…and then I die when I’ve spent $200 on one pair of yoga pants, a yoga mat, and a yoga mat towel.)

But then I decided I needed a little yoga gear refresh and ended up with a spate of great new candy-colored tanks ($30 each) to pair with my worn-in yoga pants and capris.  (Although I REALLY want to buy these Adidas by Stella McCartney running capris — on sale for $55! — but they’ve already sold out in my size.  C’est la vie.)

I also snagged some headbands in fab colors to keep my hair out of my eyes ($9 each):

Post-workout, I like to imagine myself a limber little leonetta, and I’m craving a cool “post yoga” look.  Something Nicole Richie might wear after leaving her sesh to grab a protein shake or some such madness.  This is what I have in mind (don’t judge): a neon yellow crop tank ($56) with some great gray sweats (Zoe Karssen, $145) and some cool dressed-up running shoes (Serafina, $255) and my new mirrored shades ($160):

Finish with a model off-duty-type bag — a.k.a., anything Alexander Wang, like this Prisma tote ($395):

Screen Shot 2014-02-19 at 11.10.39 PMJust getting a shake, bruh.  (Mr. Mags and I talk to each other in this “bro” voice frequently — kind of surfer guy meets frat bro meets gym rat — whenever we see the male DePaul students in our neighborhood.  Mr. Mags will interrupt what he’s saying to say: “Yahhh, bruh, just drinking a protein shake, bruh.”)

COVET3

No story here.  I just think this bra ($126) is beauteous maximus.  And it’s Marni, so that’s cool.

COVET4

I was SO torn between this pair of cray-cray Wildfox shades ($179) and the Ray-Bans I ended up with.

Screen Shot 2014-02-19 at 11.16.27 PM

The above are SO rad but I thought I’d get sick of them after awhile and that I might only wear them as “novelty shades” rather than let-me-wear-these-every-day-of-the-summer.  I’m still undecided and if they ever go on sale, they WILL join my collezioni.  Because, I mean, how cool does Bailey Quin of one of my favorite blogs, Peppermint Bliss, look in them?!

COVET5

I may have mentioned a slight obsession with the French linen purveyor D. Porthault in the past.  Welp, these hand-embroidered handkerchiefs ($50 each) are about the cutest things I’ve ever seen, and probably also the only thing I will realistically permit myself to pay for from the collection given their incredibly steep prices.

I kind of want to snag two and frame them on a wall — they are SO sweet and elegant and luxe at the same time.

COVET6

I NEED the following outfit for spring, and STAT: blush shirt ($25), chartreuse skirt ($178) with an unexpected pop of lavender (Chan Luu, $135) in the form of a breezy scarf:

Those colors!  MAMA MIA.  Finish with these unassuming but stunning metallic tweed heels ($278):

COVET7

I’d like to finish the above look with this STUNNING mini Balenciaga ($1,315) — perfection.

P.S. The MyTheresa site tells me that this bag goes with these shoes.  To which I grimace.  What are those orthopedic things?  Also, it kind of reminds me of when Yolanda Foster of the Real House of Bev Hills wears that gorgeeeeeous orange silk jumpsuit and pairs it with wedge sneaks and everyone freaks out…I don’t know why I found that hilarious.

Oh no you DIDN’T, Yolanda Foster.  Tell me you ladies watch that shiz?

COVET8

Speaking of orange and scarves (ha, tenuous connection) — this sumo-wrestler print wonder from Virginia Johnson (on sale for $67) has totally captured my heart.

COVET9

I already own this classic button-down ($78), but all of the colors above play so NICELY with chambray that I’m reimagining the way I wear it right now…

COVET10

In closing, I recently did some shopping for an upcoming monograms-and-mimosas bridal shower, and thought these linen monogrammed coasters from LetterMade were absolutely ADORABLE ($42 for set of 6) for a bride-to-be.   (FYI, friends, I went in a different direction, so you are free to snag these if you’ve not yet bought yours!)

  1. Jen- totally feeling you on the winter blues. Luckily this past weekend was a little warmer – had a chance to put on my sneakers and walk the boardwalk by the ocean here on Long Island – beautiful! But, at work today in NYC you can feel the polar vortex coming back…no!
I am totally obsessing over sunglasses right now too – and I wanted to share with you the brand/pair I am loving. Great little brand based in NOLA that I just came across – aren’t they adorable?! These are keeping Spring on my mind all the time!
