summer athletic gear

Chic Attire for Tennis, Golf, + Other Summer Athletics.

I recently did some recon for a friend of mine looking for attractive golf outfits, and she loved my picks from Tory Burch — namely two cute skorts (this one and this one) to pair with this adorable polo.

A couple of other stylish summer athletic finds, some performance-oriented and others just for looking the part…

Even more picks below — but if you want a short cut to my top picks: this fitness skort, which can be used for running but would also be a great tennis skirt (hoping to finally get into tennis when I move to D.C.!) and these fun new botanical running shorts.

MY FAVORITE CROPPED TANK (LOOK FOR LESS WITH THIS $23 STEAL WITH LIKE 35K FIVE STAR REVIEWS)

For little ladies learning to play tennis: this TH (love the navy stripe on the pleated skirt), this Adidas, this $20 Target steal, seersucker athletic shorts, this gorgeous gingham, printed floral athletic shorts, and this ric rac trim beauty. And how great is this child’s racket? Perfect in a cute little tennis backpack.

For little men learning to play: these retro shorts are one of my favorite things Hill owns (look for less with these); this performance tee; Cadets club shorts; and if tennis whites are required, these shorts or these (with a free monogram!!) and this polo.

And loads of tennis whites for boys and girls here.

And for your man: these shorts (dressier) or these (more performance-oriented).

P.S. “If you ever find yourself in the wrong story, leave.”

P.P.S. Adjacent to this post: summer sun protection finds for the entire family.

  1. OMG what?!! I never understand when an item is that popular why they don’t keep selling them!

  3. Fashion Magpie,
Help! I just turned 65 and struggling what to wear on dates (widow) and work (teacher). Something fun, easy to throw on in the heat (California is home)and to bop around town. I am 5’8, healthy with an athletic body. Designers that work for me: theory, Vince, Anthropology, Splendid, Free people, J crew, Sandro esq style. Preppy with an edge that is trendy and affordable. I am lost, I love the styles that are out with the smocking, ruffles but I just can’t rock it. Help this woman in fashion slump.

I have been following you for years and your style, suggestions, and recommendations. I have scored on many of them and always look forward on your daily posts.

I have enjoyed your authenticity with your children and how we are all just doing the best we can. Btw your kiddos are adorable and I know how much love they receive and give. It just gets better the older they get.
I have a granddaughter and have bought many many many of your recs . I love keeping our littles and you knock it out of the park all the time in your post.

Just want you to know that I appreciate you and what you give to all of your followers.

Good luck on your move, and looking forward to reading all about it.

Have a beautiful day, and enjoy your littles and the sunshine that they bring to you.

    1. Hi Carol – Thank you so much for the lovely note. This absolutely made my day. I read it just before leaving for my morning run and I was on cloud nine the entire jog :). Thank you for your kindness. I am so lucky to have you reading along! Thank you for your readership, support, and encouragement.

Let me put some thought into some outfits that might put some pep in your step. (We’ve all been there!). I do think shirtdresses are very flattering and not as frilly as some of the other styles that are trending at the moment — they always make me feel so pulled-together. There are some fun options in this post:

I especially think this green and white striped one is striking and attractive:

I also have been absolutely LIVING in this shirtdress from India Amory (now on sale!):

      https://juliaamory.com/products/the-julia-amory-shirt-dress-moroccan-blue?_pos=1&_sid=728d9d091&_ss=r

It is so flattering and comfortable and easy to throw on. Super lightweight, but fully lined. And has pockets! I like that the length makes it feel a bit more dramatic/like a statement, but it’s very traditional! And the pattern is fun, too.

Tucker also has some new shirt dress styles that have fun prints that could work at school or on a date:

Tuckernuck has a lot of great pieces that might be just the “preppy with an edge” vibe you are looking for. Maybe this blouse with white jeans:

Or this pretty dress with great sandals:

      https://bit.ly/3yZP5ME

And would you consider a tunic top? This is SO chic with white jeans or white shorts:

      https://bit.ly/3pk763v

I feel like tunics look SO good on taller, more athletic builds like yours. Love.

Last but not least, you might LOVE a caftan like this:

      https://bit.ly/3g3GUGs

If that’s too frilly owing to the flounced skirt, there are also simpler styles like this:

      https://bit.ly/3z8LMTt

SO easy to throw on with sandals and head out for the day. Not sure if those would be as appropriate for a school context, but for sure on the weekends / for day dates.

And last but not least — maybe try a pair of linen pants to pair with a plain white tee:

      https://bit.ly/3vQbKbZ

So chic and timeless. Looks great with simple gold jewelry and sandals.

I will keep shopping for you! More to come!

      xx
