Bright Eyes

By: Jen Shoop

Did I tell you that last Friday, weather.com said it “felt like -19” outside when I woke up?  Negative 19, people.  Negative. Nineteen.  As my bestie put it: “I have no frame of reference for what -19 feels like.”  Neither do I.  Nor do I want one.

I’ve been fomenting my own rebellion against the weather by wearing the brightest clothes I own.  Last week, I dusted off my hot pink jeans and pulled out a blue-and-neon-yellow LemLem style scarf and wore them with reckless abandon.  Boom goes the dynamite.  (Or, this act of vengeance did nothing to curb the cold temps.)

I shouldn’t be so grouchy — I do love the fact that it snowed for a few days in a row this past week.  Chicago is beautiful in the snow, and I love the view from our bedroom when it’s snowing.  We have glass doors that look out onto a patio in our bedroom and it’s snuggly to watch the snow fall at night.  It also meant that Mr. Magpie and I “stayed in” most of the weekend, cooking, drinking wine, and watching a million movies.  (We saw “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” and “End of Watch” in the span of 24 hours.  Lame or impressive?  Have you seen any of these?  Thoughts, please.)

But, to the point at hand: BRIGHT separates to improve my spirits.  First — how much do we love this peplum top in the cheeriest neon ever (Tibi, $385)?  Temper with rugged jeans (Current/Elliott’s “The Stiletto,” $228) and finish with a bright coral necklace ($88) and these strappy sandals ($100):

I like it with this honeycomb-print clutcheroo (DVF, $395):

Or, how about some cobalt blue skinnies (J. Brand, $306) with an airy tunic top ($165), gauzey neon-tinged scarf (LemLem, $140 — another great color combo available here), and silver flats ($135):

Add only this mini crossbody (on sale for $118) to echo the strip of neon in the scarf:

This throw + go dress from J. Brand ($440) also caught my attention.  Lovely with this TDF statement necklace from J. Crew’s latest and greatest ($148):

I’d finish with these stunning blush sandals (Alejandro Ingelmo, $1,295):

Finish with this perforated clutch (DVF, $345):

Also, do we love the idea of pairing a crisp white dress ($100) with a pendant necklace (Trina Turk, $150)

Finish with this TDF tasseled clutch (adorbs — by hip new line Figue, $195) and these fierce tootsies (Alejandro Ingelmo, $1,350) — enjoying the idea of wearing lots of different shades of coral in this look.

Or, thoughts on some hot pink trousers (on sale for ~$150) to spice things up at work?  Dreamy McDreamerson with this Marni peplum stunner ($711), though pretty much any blouse would do the trick!

Top it off with those clear Manolos ($775):

  1. Jen I cannot even tell you how much I hated Beasts of the Southern Wild! I know I’m the outlier but it actually made me angry watching it.

    1. Hi Fran — I can see why. While there was some beautiful cinematography, I left thinking: “OK, so…so…so…” Lots of question marks. I think the strength of the movie was the way it showed, very poignantly, how children make sense of the world around them and process events (traumatic and otherwise). But beyond that, I felt like I was being strung along I’m not sure where I was led or why. What made you angry about it?? xxx
