Bridge to Terabithia.

By: Jen Shoop

The title of this post has absolutely nothing to do with its content.  (How post modern of me.)  I’ve sickened myself with the wretched punny titles I’ve cooked up over the past few weeks, and can only imagine how you fill.  I will instead be appointing my posts with the titles of works from important literary moments in my life.  This time, “Bridge to Terabithia” surfaces.  Please tell me you read this awful book by Katherine Patterson in grade school?  It scarred me almost as much as watching “My Girl” for the first time, and for much the same reason.  Spoiler alert: a budding romance is dashed to smithereens when one of the characters dies an untimely and tragic young death by rope swing.  “Bridge to Terabithia” may have been my first brush with the power of literature.  I was gut-wrenched — crushed! — and could hardly believe that reading a few words on paper would leave me feeling so deeply overcome with loss.  I’ve since added many a masterpiece to the list and have also come to the conclusion that “Bridge” was just a cheap way of teaching me to never go anywhere without asking my parents for permission.  (It also left me highly suspicious of rope swings, rope ladders, and the like.)

OK, so there’s that.  (What books impacted you most when you were wee ones?!  I’ll be the first to admit that I read nearly the entire Baby Sitter’s Club collection cover to cover, including the Super Specials.  I also read the Bobsey Twins, Boxcar Children, and scores of Nancy Drews (oh, Ned Nickerson!  How I fantasized about him).  In between those binge reads, I dipped my toes into fantasy (“A Wrinkle in Time” anyone?) and the occasional classic (“Secret Garden,” hollaback.))

Anyway — don’t worry: this is not a warm up to suggest that I’m going to be dressing up as a tween right now.  As I warned you, it was all a wild, nonsensical, verging-on-Juan-Borges-style means of introing what I want to be wearing right now: a breezy, watermelon-hued Equipment dress (Equipment, $248) with this coin necklace (Ben Amun, $455):

I like it with these sweet sandals (Loeffler Randall, on serious sale for $136).  A breezy scarf never hurt nobody ($206), and may enhance the look.  I’m also loving this look with a statement clutch (tres Palm Beach…and tres expensive — Edie Parker, $1,495):

Other items to mix-n-match to stay true to the white on gold theme?  This stunning statement necklace ($178); these Loeffler Randall espadrilles (I know…I’m obsessed.  It’s a problem.  $195.  Or, get the look for less with these); this sweet dish that I need to either hang on a wall (cool alternative to artwork) or on a side table in my room ($40); this baller Sass + Bide top (on sale for $154); a cheeky iPhone cover (both Kate Spade; top, $40; bottom, $40); a cheeky gold foil letter tee ($28); and dressy glam sandals ($110):
