Baby, It’s (Kinda) Cold Outside.

By: Jen Shoop

HELLO from our new home on the Upper West Side of New York City!!!!

We made it.

We’re still living out of boxes and coping with the slightly traumatic events of the last few weeks (even physically moving into the building was a crazy mess — the service entrance is on the total opposite side of the building, and the movers weren’t allowed to stay in the loading zone unless one of them was sitting in the driver’s seat at all times, so it took our poor movers hours and hours and hours to get our stuff into our apartment — each item had to travel 300 steps! — and then we were running up against the 5 pm cut-off for move-ins in our building and the building admin was trying to push the movers out of the building even though our belongings were still on the truck and AHHH) — BUT.

We made it.

And I have Internet.

And even though right now I am sitting cross-legged on the floor of our apartment (the very dirty floor of our apartment thanks to lots of movers and handymen in and out of the unit and no cleaning supplies and a mound of boxes right now) with minimagpie in this thing right next to me, hurling toys against the wall (my mom got her a toy very similar to this and she loves it), and about four trillion boxes around us, it feels, for the first time in a month, that we have made it.

Also: on our family walk this morning it was 40 degrees outside!  I somehow managed to find a pair of gloves and a hat for the occasion, and thought I’d share some of my top cold weather accessory picks, and some inspirational looks that should remind us that cold weather does not necessarily negate the ability to dress stylishly:

New York Fashionweek day 5, navy hat and coat, detail

The Fashion Magpie Felted Wool Hat

The Fashion Magpie Pom Winter Hat

+These mittens are, quite frankly, THE BEST mittens out there.  They’re lined with plush fleece and really keep your paws warm.  Plus, I love the cable knit!  If you’re looking for something a little dressier, I’m obsessing over these!

+I bought one of these pom hats (I own the vintage champagne color) last winter and wore it constantly.  When I pulled it out, it had a little makeup on the underside thanks to my daily tinted moisturizer, so I’m glad I already located my wool and cashmere detergent.  I also love this style, with a slightly less exaggerated pom.

+I’m inspired by the chic peas above in their felted wool brimmed hats — this looks like a safe bet for trying out the style.

+I have heard great things about the cashmere from White + Warren and their hats have my eye.  Can you imagine anything cozier than a band of cashmere around your head?!

+Love the marled look of this hat.

+If you find the pom look a little childish (I get it), this cashmere cap (on sale!) would be ultra chic, especially paired with an elegant camel coat (love this).  (But, if you’ve never tried a pom hat, DO IT!  See above for inspiration!)

+These scalloped-edged gloves are sweet.

+I just ordered this hat and mittens set for minimagpie (on sale!) — I had had my eye on this one from Old Navy, but it sold out in the white color, and I just didn’t think red jived as well with her wardrobe.  (She wears this coat on the daily.)

+I’m a huge fan of earmuffs — these are statement-making and on sale (!), and these gently-used ones from Burberry are everything.  (My mom owns a pair of these and looks precious in them.)

+Finally — the art of the wrap/poncho/scarf situation, of which my mom is a true master.   (BTW, check out more insane fashion inspiration from ladies over 50!) She is always swaddled with an enormous, soft, cozy cashmere wrap of some kind at the first sign of frost.  This houndstooth one has my name all over it, or this one, with even more of a chic menswear vibe.  However, this one is SO my mom with the hints of baby blue in it (she looks amazing in this color) — it reminds me in style of the Burberry one everyone was wearing a few seasons back.  And speaking of: I know that sometimes the Burberry novacheck can be a little…too much?  A little played out?  A little something.  But I would LOVE to throw this on over an all-black ensemble, though maybe this reversible style is a touch more appropriately subtle.

+For cozy scarves: LOVE the oversized plushness of this one in all three colors, but am particularly drawn to that green/navy combo!  So chic RN.  I also love the colors in this $18 steal!

  1. Loved Paris as always (have spent quite a bit of time there, so it’s always a little like returning home). Was my first time in Lyon and it was wonderful (the food!!). And no surliness when you have a little baby – who shamelessly wants to make friends with EVERYONE and smiles at EVERYBODY – in tow!

    1. AHA. The key to everyone’s heart. The same goes for NYC, actually — the baby really does a number on the stereotype of the pushy, aggressive, tough New Yorker!

  2. Congrats on your move! Love these picks … the first item looks quite similar to a pair of mittens I got at Lululemon two winters back — they’re black with metallic gold at the tips and have slits so you can wiggle your fingers out … I LOVE them and need a backup pair, so your pick might just be it!

I am a total pom hat fanatic — I feel like my head looks weird in most beanies without them. Haha! I’ve always wanted to try a felted wool structured hat — maybe this is the year. Love Cuyana and that option is a great one!

    1. KEEP ME POSTED on the felted structured hat situation. I’m intrigued as well. But will I look like Indiana Jones…?

  3. Greetings now from Paris (after a short stint in Lyon)! So glad to hear that you’re settled!! Loving all the cold-weather options – it’s definitely brisk here, and I’m trying so hard not to buy new clothes for the baby (…and me) knowing we won’t need them in SoCal. Though, I am still dithering on a cape… love the ones featured in this post!

    1. SO amazing — PARIS! I’m tres jalouse. How was Lyon?!?! My old stomping ground. Were the French as surly as ever? Haha.
