Chameleon

J.Crew is nailing it this season.  I popped in the other day to take care of some Christmas shopping and I found myself clutching onto about a dozen different items that I “needed” for myself.  Great colors, great price points, great patterns, great gems.  Love.  The thing I admire most about them is that they’ve stepped away from the “classic” and really re-tooled themselves into a totally versatile brand.  You could be 16 or 72, a hipster or a lady who lunches, and you’d still find goodies there.  That takes some master-minding, eh?  This led me to realize that if I purchased one basic item from them, I could reinvent it any number of ways to suit any number of styling perspectives I might have in the next few weeks.  Take this felted mini ($60-$80, depending on color):

Great colors, great, classic style.  The seamed pockets give it a little juju.

LOOK 1: PARISIAN STREET CHIC

So let’s see — say we want to go Paris Street Chic.  Pair the white mini with a polka-dot, tie-front blouse in classic black and white (woah, what a find! — $25); black tights; and some classic black leather heeled boots (Loeffler Randall, $595):

In a dream world, finish with a Celine Constance bag and some studded gloves (Valentino, $445 — or get the look for less with this $68 pair)…and as a Parisian lady, don’t forget your Illy espresso and croissant as you stroll the streets of grand ol’ Paris:

And — to protect ourselves from the cold climes — this bananas leather-sleeved wool topper (DVF, $775):

As a gift-ski for this street chic pea…

This darling “love” ring ($47) — so perfect for the quirky-chic lady strolling the streets of Paris with her beau (or with lots of shopping bags):

LOOK 2: THE LITTLE LADY

Of course, a felted mini is perfect for the ladylike traditionalist, especially paired with a pale pink lace tee ($138), some ladylike enorma-studs (Bounkit, $320)

Finish with some bow-toe flats (Kate Spade, on sale for $119), and the dreamiest of handbags, the Chloe Marcie in dusty rose pink ($1,795):

Finish with this nubby jacket ($495):

And, as a gift for the Little Lady…

Don’t you love sporting this look to a ladylike tea (do you DIE over this tea service set?! — on sale for $40! — and it comes in a darling HATBOX):

LOOK 3: ECLECTIC DOWNTOWN FASHIONISTA

Or, say you want to wear something a bit more mix-and-match?  Try a denim button-down ($98) with a bold gold necklace ($220) and some leather Loeffler Randall OTKs (on sale for $578):

I’d round it out with this bananas leather studded watch ($115) — a much more affordable version of the Hermes Medor ($4,050):

Finish with a cherry red Pashli mini ($650):

Finish with a cozy-chic hat ($69) and this amazing epaulet coat ($101):

Complete the look for her with the perfect cold weather gift…

A pair of woolen mittens ($25 — plus 30% off!  I snagged lots of winter essentials for myself with this coupon code, including some thermal knit tees in fun striped combinations for the cold Chicago winter!):

Happy Thanksgiving Week!

Pep(lum) It Up

In Accessories, Denim, Jewelry, Magpie Must, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather on October 3, 2012 at 9:56 am

Was anyone else terrified when peplum came into vogue?  (“You want volume…where?  In the mid-section?  Right by my thighs?  Que pasa?  Are you insane?”)  But then…this:

So.  It was time to reconsider.  That, and the fact that my hip little sis was wearing a peplum top when I visited her in NYC, so that pretty much sealed the deal.  So, I snagged this inexpensive boucle top from TopShop ($50) — I liked the color and texture.  A little different.  I’ll wear it with a deco-style pendant ($168), my black J. Brands ($185) and booties (um, these Zanottis are…sick — $995.  Side note: did anyone see Ramona Singer shopping at G. Zanotti’s flagship store in NYC on RHONY earlier this season?  She botched the name so badly I almost went deaf.):

I like it with an oversized clutch ($62):

Or — how about peplum on the bottom, in the form of this dreamy Lanvin skirt (I mean…perfection — $2K — but get the look for far less with this TopShop style, $68), paired with a patterned blouse ($27 — Kirna Zabete for Target) and some big earrings (LOVE me some Suzanna Dai — $145)

Finish with a classic pair of pointed pumps ($206) for a seriously glam daytime look…and of course the Givenchy Antigona bag wouldn’t hurt (dreamy. – $2,500):

For something on the more casual end, consider this striped peplum top ($58) with a tangly pearl-and-chain necklace ($150), dark wash skinnies and Chanel-esque flats ($69):

I dream about wearing the latest + greatest from Alexander Wang (though I’m still loving my Emile, which I drooled over for a full year and have enjoyed every minute of owning — $985):

While this isn’t peplum, how much do we love this mustard capelet from Alice and Olivia ($495)?!

Perfect over this peplum top ($37) with jeans and some chic booties (love this cap-toed pair from B Brian Atwood! — $475):

I’d finish with this TDF snakeskin cross-body ($795).  I saw it in person at the J. Crew Collection Store in Manhattan, and was uber envious.

If this is all too much, just test it out with a cozy topper from Tibi ($495) and your favorite pair of work skinnies ($89) and pointed flats ($188) for some high-gloss sophistication:

Finish with a smart cross-body, like the Mulberry Effie ($670).  Can’t decide if I like it better in the white or black…

Who’s willing to try the trend?!

Horsing Around

In Accessories, Americana, Denim, Dream Wear, Pop of Red, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather on August 22, 2012 at 10:28 am

“Oversized blouses are pretty much all that matter to me.”

-Rumi Neeley

HAHAHA.  I read this quote from esteemed fashion blogger Rumi of Fashion Toast (recently featured in The Coveteur) and literally guffawed.  I know she was being sarcastic here, but after I regained composure, it did make me pause and think about priorities.  And how sometimes the most important thing isn’t scurrying over to J. Crew to snap up the last pom-pom blouse they have in your size, but making sure that you take the time to tell your husband that you are running that errand so he doesn’t freak out and use iCloud to track your whereabouts with Apple’s GPS, thinking that you may laying dead in a ditch somewhere.  (True story.  That actually happened.  Poor Mr. Magpie.)  I don’t know why I feel compelled to shell out this PSA today, because Lord knows this blog stands at cross-purposes with that agenda, but perhaps it’s good to come back to center every now and then and remember that fashion isn’t a religion, and that taking it too seriously is a big no-no.

Actually, I do know why I feel this compulsion today: a good cause.  Now, I promise not to clutter this blog with various personal causes, but this one is near and dear to me because one of my nearest and dearest friends, Lady S. we’ll call her, is very closely involved with it.   Lady S. spends her spare time teaching disabled individuals to ride horses as a form of physical therapy through the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program.  Her heart is ginormous, and just hearing her talk about the work she does — with such dedication and modesty — is enough to restore your faith in the universe.  If you live in the D.C. area, you MUST attend their annual fundraiser, a polo match!  (It’s coming up soon — September 8th.  Buy tickets here.)  It’s pretty much the ultimate Magpie treat — supporting a seriously amazing cause and being able to get all dolled up for a classy, outdoor affair.  Win all around.

If you do end up going, let’s talk equine fashion.  What screams fall more than a tweedy equestrian look?  Accomplish with this affordable blazer ($55), some skinnies, and some cap-toed flats ($150):

Perfect with my beloved Alexander Wang Emile ($970) — (I own it in the toffee color with the rose gold hardware…to die.)

Now, I kind of live for (ha, bordering on Rumi above) this feathered collar necklace ($598) from the one and only Lizzie Fortunato.  OMG.  I’d wear it with an LBD for a big statement.

Bof.  Now, a more traditional tack on the equestrian look might call for this classic wrap watch ($125):

And then some gold, glossy accents, like this chain link necklace ($60), a signet ring from Sarah Chloe ($98 and up, depending on shape and metal), or this horsebit bangle ($150):

Or, of course, a classic monogrammed necklace would be a nice addition to the fall look ($58 apiece):

Loves.  Other accent pieces?  I dig this cute horse-print scarf ($32 — though Gap has a similar version in navy or red for $30, and they’re running a 25% off coupon code!), and how beyond precious is this horse-head necklace from Tory Burch ($265)?!

(PS — If that’s too bold a necklace style, check out this longer style for $175.)  Now, the dream closet addition would be this ridiculous two-tone tweed blazer from Givenchy ($2,740):

Lovely, lovely, lovely.  (J. Crew has a solid red flannel style that can approximate the look available for $198.) Imagine pairing it with the ULTIMATE riding boots from Hermes ($2,475)…be still my heart.

But we all know that riding boots have been a staple in the fall fashion scene for the past few years or so, and are plentifully available at multiple price points.  These Tory Burch puppies ($495) are perennially popular.  I own and love a pair of Loeffler Randall Mathildes ($695) — sleek lines.  Meanwhile, I owned and ran into the ground at least two pairs of Steve Madden Intyces ($150) in my post-college years.  They get the look down pat, but they get destroyed rather quickly.  Perfectly tied together with a leather-and-gold wrap bracelet ($40 apiece).

Another look to love?  A crisp white oxford (the one below is from Gant for $190, but we all know Polo’s classic oxford, $89, is the prepster’s staple) beneath a vest (loveee this J. Crew excursion vest in herringbone! — $138), paired with those embroidered flats I just snagged ($40):

Very sleek.  You might accent the look with this cape/scarflet ($440)…

Pair with the CLASSY Marc Jacobs Bowery tote ($1,295) and you’re made.  Keep personals in this pony-hair pouch from cool line Hare & Hart (LOVE. — $145):

Speaking of bags, let’s get back to the equestrian look at hand with a classic brown leather saddle bag from J.W. Hulme ($470 — and you can get it embossed!).  (Or, check out this cute colorblocked mini style, available for $238.)  Perfect with a classic Hermes-inspired silky scarf ($100).

Of course, the ultimate riding/hunting gear?  A Barbour coat ($379).  My oh my do I want one.  Mr. Magpie rocks his, and so does Lady S.

Now, if this post didn’t make you wish for fall, I don’t know what will.   And if I were you, I’d look into attending the polo match!  Thanks lovelies!  Have a great day!

Confetti

In Accessories, Brights!, Dream Wear, Glitter, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes, Tweed on May 3, 2012 at 11:30 am

The inspiration for this post is this bauble by R.J. Graziano ($198, Shop Kitson):

I mean.  YES.  Goes with these happy tootsies (Pierre Hardy, $830, TheCorner):

These would be equally stunning paired with these drop earrings ($185, Flutter) and a flowy, red-hot dress (Kourtney K. was seen in this dress…aka, I must own it — $188, Pinkyotto):

Or, swap out the Pierre Hardy pair and go full-on glam for a night out with these Prada hot trotters ($1,100, Bergdorf’s — swoon.) and the ultimate score: the Alexander McQueen knuckleduster clutch ($1,505, Matches — no extra bling needed):

Alternately, how to die is this riot of a jacket (Tory Burch, $525, Net-A-Porter) with a pair of cluster earrings (Erickson Beamon, $310, Charm and Chain), skinnies and some spiffy flats ($61, Yoox):

I’d finish with a simple yellow tote — can’t help but re-feature (and re-feature, and re-feature) this covetable Reed Krakoff style ($1,190, Net-A-Porter):

Or, how about a confetti tweed mini ($98, J. Crew)?  Pair with a simple white tee ($29, J. Crew) and this awesome coral-esque necklace ($78, BCBG):

I’d finish with cobalt flats ($98, Banana):

Hot tamale.  Perfect “cool girl” work outfit, no?  Other bits and bobs to consider?  A gem-crusted clutch ($665, Forzieri) or some dazzling drops (from top to bottom: Yosca, $125, Charm & Chain; Bounkit, $365, Charm & Chain;$58, Juicy Couture; $300, Tom Binns)!

Just delightful.  And I’ll conclude with one of my all-time favorite pairs of shoes, which are happily nestled in my closet: the Kate Spade Charm ($325, Endless):

Perfection with this corresponding clutch (Kara Ross, $650, Bergdorf’s) and this ridiculous necklace (Erickson Beamon, $643, Thomas Laine):

BAM.

Borrowed from the Boys

In Accessories, Magpie Men, Monograms, Neutrals, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather, Work Wear on October 6, 2011 at 10:50 am

It’s fall.  It’s time to get serious about all things tweed, herringbone, and houndstooth — time to take a note from Godfather Ralphie (practically family in my Magpie nest — Mr. Magpie’s closet is about 99.9% stock with Ralph Lauren separates.   As I’ve mentioned previously, Mr. Magpie is the type of guy who wears a bow tie to bars and a polo shirt to bed).

I’m liking the idea of these houndstooth wool pants ($138, J. Crew) with a silken Equipment blouse ($208, Shopbop) and a statement necklace featuring heavy gold ($311, Boutique1):

I’d finish with these cap-toe pumps ($89, Zara) and this glossy, be-tasseled black carry-all ($495, Rebecca Minkoff):

And, in terms of accessories, I’d wear a borrowed-from-the-boys watch accented in tortoise ($46, ASOS — or get the name brand version from Michael Kors for $195) and a signet ring ($398, Sarah Chloe):

Dress up your technology in similar borrowed-from-the-boys detailing: consider a classic brown leather iPad case ($109, Lodis) and a textured-effect iPhone case ($40, Jack Spade):

I also love this fair-isle knit sweater dress (Sandro, $190, Place Des Tendances), and would probably wear it in these crisp fall days with a pair of riding boots (Tory Burch, $495, Nordstrom) and a herringbone “hacking jacket” atop it all (love the layering possibilities that cool weather brings…this style is by J. Crew, but they’ve sold out of this lovely heathered green, which is still available, oddly enough, for $200 at Net-A-Porter):

I’d finish with this nubby crossbody ($49, Zara):

Also loving the idea of this FANTASTIC YSL vintage skirt (only one available, and it’s reasonable — $134, Farfetch) paired with a crisp white, demi-sheer blouse ($208, Shopbop) and some eye-catching enorm-studs ($150, Noir):

I’d pair with ladylike pumps (still can’t get over these Givenchy beauties — $590, Net-A-Porter):

Finally, a chunky gold chain bracelet ($162, BaubleBar) –

– and a red/maroon cross-body bag (Marc Jacobs, $725, MyTheresa):

It would all look elegant, classic trench (Burberry is the high fashion standard, but can you believe how closely this Kai-Aakmann style comes to that high mark?!  and for 1/4 of the price?!  — $260, Satine Boutique):

Or, check out this mod-style shift dress ($189, Isabella Oliver), which would look lovely with a big ol statement necklace (Adam Lippes, on sale for $452, CoutureCandy), and a pair of houndstooth pumps ($118, Vince Camuto):

I like it with the West End Kennedy purse ($345, Kate Spade):

Top it all off with a gray boucle coat (I know — lots of texture here, but it all works together harmoniously — $415, Built By Wendy) and a pair of red leather gloves ($34, Debenhams):

Or, consider a classic blue oxford ($109, Steven Alan) tucked into a camel wool mini ($195, StyleBop) and topped with a BESPOKE blazer from Franklin & Gower (OMG, check it out, you can customize the color of the wool, the color of the lining, and the color of the accents — LOVE — $460, Franklin and Gower):

I’d finish with spectator-inspired tootsies (I featured these last week, and am still contemplating their purchase…Tracy Reese, $139, Endless):

And, finally, a tweeded clutch ($34, Aubin and Wills):

For accents, I suggest simple shiny gold circle studs ($200, Ylang23), a monogrammed necklace ($249, Sarah Chloe), and a chunky gold bracelet ($245, Dannijo):

And, of course, opt to finish the day off Mad Men style with a classic cocktail, poured from one of these awesome vintage decanters ($100 apiece, Chic Shop LA):

Bottoms up.

Camping Out

In Accessories, Fierce, Fur, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather on September 27, 2011 at 10:34 am

It always happens this time of year: I daydream about spending a night or two camping with my nearest and dearest somewhere in the Blue Ridge.  The idea of s’mores, the smell of campfire, and all of that “into the wild” goodness are endlessly appealing.  (Mr. Magpie, please refrain from commenting on the sheer insanity of this commentary — I know you know better than anyone that I’m not exactly an “outdoor” kind of girl.  Bugs = ew.)  For such an excursion, I’d of course need to bundle up with all sorts of laughably inappropriate gear, including a black fur vest (Elizabeth and James, $595, LesNouvelles), a glen plaid flannel top (Isabel Marant, $385, Net-A-Porter), and some skinnies:

Even though I kinda half think that this get-up calls for some moto-inspired boots, they scare me too much.  I feel like they cross the line into masculine/terrifying territory, so I’ll stay calmly over here, far away from them.  Instead, I’ll finish with these equestrian-inspired Hunter boots ($195, Shopbop), which add just the right blend of practicality* and polish:

*This little Magpie does not do “real” camping, as evidenced by the bogus statement/blatant falsehood that the above outfit is in any way “practical.”  Oddly appropriate, then, that the title of this post is about “camp” — camp referring in one sense  to the physical activity of pitching tent and toasting s’mores, and in another, to the aesthetic sensibility, as in “kitsch,” or the sort of artificial/ironic “putting on” of an unsophisticated, low-taste-level quality.  Campiness.

At any rate — back to the threads.   One of my other go-to habits for cooler weather?  Layering long-sleeved tees over oxfords for a borrowed-from-the-boys look that still maintains a feminine silhouette.  I begin with one of my Ralph Lauren oxfords, layer a thin crewneck shirt over top ($72, Madewell), and finish with white jeans (IMHO, these do NOT need to be stowed post-Labor Day.  I like them tucked into brown boots in fall or with sloafers well into autumn), tortoise shades (Thierry Lasry, $375, Opening Ceremony), and some Minnetonkas ($44, Zappos):

Once the sun sets and the temperature cools, slip into a parka — I’m dy.ing. over this Crewcuts style for boys ($148, J. Crew), but this grown-up Madewell style is also lovely –

Or go really “back-woods” (really “campy”) with a classic plaid flannel, borrowed from the boys (love the elbow patches! — $295, Jack Spade), denim skinnies, and some classic Sorel boots ($140, Shopbop):

Wear the shirt unbuttoned with a tank underneath to add some girlishness, and then finish with aviators ($139, Ray-Ban) and cozy mittens ($52, WinkNYC):

Still too masculine for you?  Try the feminized version of the flannel shirt above in the form of this cape ($268, Steven Alan):

Perfect with these sherpa-lined mittens ($15, Dorothy Perkins):

Come nightfall, snuggle up in these girlified thermals ($42 for top, $58 for bottom — JuicyCouture):

Layer as appropriate.  For me, this means a cashmere snuggly wrap sweater ($386, SeatonSurf) and Smartwool socks (they ain’t pretty, but they are all about function, and man, do they function well.  I wear these every.day. of the winter — $17.95/pair, Smartwool):

Who are we kidding?  I’d also probably have this cable-knit scarf wrapped around my neck ($115, Reiss) and my trusty ol LLBean mocs (they are so ratty and disgusting at this point — sort of like little balls of debris strapped to my foot…time for a replacement pair?! — $59, LLBean):

And then, finally, a tidy little luxe camping set (ridiculous?  Yes. But I’ll take cashmere pillows and eye masks any day — $209, Bluefly):

I’m a notorious overpacker, and I will not miss the opportunity to disappoint, even when camping.  I’d stow an extra fleece pullover (this oatmeal fleece is my all-time favorite piece of outerwear — it is so.warm. and so snuggly.  And I like its retro styling — $139, Patagonia), some extra socks ($40, Aubin and Wills), and — of course — an extra, sherpa-lined throw ($120, Woolrich), all stowed in a totally ridiculous leather weekender ($395, JackSpade):

I’d keep cosmetics and lingerie in separate pouches ($30 each, Aubin and Wills) –

– and, for fun around the campfire, pack a deck of cards and the fixins for my favorite cocktail for fall — The Town Hall (well, that’s what they call my favorite drink at a local watering hole of the same name — it contains Woodford Reserve, house-made ginger ale, and apple cider molasses…yum…!):

Anyone else in the mood for a jaunt into the woods, Magpie style?!

A Flannel Fall

In Americana, Black, Fierce, Fur, Jewelry, Leopard, Monograms, Neutrals, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather, Work Wear on September 20, 2011 at 11:13 am

OK, I’m officially done with summer and 100% locked into autumn.  I’ve been waltzing around in cozy knit ponchos, jeans, boots, and blazers, and am practically ecstatic about it.  (I was so.bored. of my summer wardrobe that I occasionally turned into a snippy little angerball when opening my closet.  I may have kicked one of my Jack Rogers in frustration/bored0m.  Mr. Magpie can attest to this and how unbecoming that behavior is, so: thanks, fall, for showing up.)  In addition to my obsession with all-things-animal for fall 2011 (as evidenced by the zoology lesson I shared with you in yesterday’s post), I’m seriously into textures, and especially into separates in the gray flannel family.  Cannot.get.enough.  Picture yourself swaddled (? awkward word for a grown woman?) in this belted dream of a coat (so 80s in all of the right ways with that boxy, dramatic neckline and the cropped sleeves — Calvin Klein, on sale for $384, TheOutnet):

Ugh, lovely.  I’d finish with a bow-front blouse (polka dot would be preferable, but a classic white style is endlessly useful — $9.95, H&M), black skinnies, and some “check me out” shoes, in the form of these TDF, rabbit-fur-lined booties by Vionnet (warm and stylish — YES. — $649, MyTheresa):

I’d finish with a pop o’ red in the form of the Edie purse in flame red ($238, J. Crew) and some ladylike gloves (Agent Provacateur, $500, Net-A-Porter):

Alternately, pair a chubby little sweater (Phillip Lim, $589, MyTheresa) with a structured mini (Maje, $240, Net-A-Porter) –

– and finish with some classy pointed-toe pumps (I kinda dig the entire Ivanka Trump collection…$119, Heels) and a leopard pouchette (Jerome Dreyfuss, $220, Shopbop):

The materials are so heavy that jewelry might look a little outrageous on top, so — I would probably only add a pair of simple studs ($110, BaubleBar), a ladylike watch ($54, ASOS), and a funky little ring (I’ve had my eye on this two-finger style for awhile…knuckle dusters are usually so aggressive and scary, but this glossy gold style caught my eye and could look interesting paired with luxe accessories and a ladylike get up — $52, Amazon):

Alternately, test out the inverse: a cozy turtleneck sweater ($55, J. Crew) and a heathered gray flannel skirt with a built-in camel waistband (Giambattista Valli, on sale for $453, TheOutnet), topped with a fur scarf (Adrienne Landau, $350, Bloomingdale’s):

Finish with some uber-high heels (ugh, d.i.e. over these Casadei tootsies — they’d go with everything…and also break your legs — $1,015, TheCorner) and a color-blocked tote ($425, DKNY):

You may have noticed that this is The Season of The Cape.  Test it out yourself with this foolproof J. Crew style in timeless gray flannel/camel leather trim ($395, J. Crew), blue skinnies, and some snakeskin flats ($118, Ann Taylor):

I’d finish with this envelope clutch ($37, ModCloth), and some classic jewelery pieces, including a monogrammed signet ring ($398, SarahChloe), an Hermes enamel bangle (want.so.bad. — $570, Hermes), an a studded bangle or two (NOIR, $75, Zappos):

For something a bit bolder for those of you fearless fashionistas out there, why not wear a ladylike printed blouse ($66, Debenhams) with a pair of flannel-effect shorts (Maje, $195, Net-A-Porter), some black tights, and some polished flats (Sam Edelman, $107, MyWardrobe)?

I’d top it all off with a camel cape ($292, JoanShepp) and an awesome felt-and-leather tote (I own this puppy in brown leather and get compliments on it every day of my life — $149, Zara):

Alternately, consider a white bow-front blouse ($16, H&M), a leopard scarf (YSL, $819, MyTheresa), and a gray flannel mini ($20, H&M):

I’d pair it with black tights and python-effect pumps (Pour La Victoire, $250, JoanShepp):

I’d update the look with this cape ($87, Dorothy Perkins) and a ladylike bag ($425, Rebecca Minkoff):

I’d pair with a wrap watch (Michael Kors, $225, Net-A-Porter), some simple gold studs ($45, Charm&Chain), and a chunky ring ($62, Noir):

Finally — a few top “separates” that can blend into a well-heeled fall wardrobe: a schoolboy blazer ($188, J. Crew)

Or maybe a felt/flannel shoe, like this bow-toe flat ($112, Heels) accompanied by a printed scarf ($245, Chan Luu) and a calf-hair tassel wallet ($195, Rag&Bone):

Or pair a leopard clutch ($890, Net-A-Porter) and test-drive this season’s epic shoewear style — the “sloafer” — in gray flannel ($119, Nordstrom):

And, finally, this awesome boxy cardi ($211, MyWardrobe) and an update on the classic wedge ($150, Ivanka Trump):

Woo!  I’m all into fall.

Tight End

In Accessories, Black, Jewelry, Minimalista, Olivia Palermo, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather, Work Wear on February 3, 2011 at 1:25 pm

No, this post has nothing to do with this upcoming weekend’s Super Bowl.  Or football more generally.  {Although I did recently learn about / ogle at Cam Newton — one interesting reason to watch the sport.  Um, eye candy.}  The Magpie Men in my life know that I have a deep-rooted aversion to “the pigskin” — perhaps because it eats up so much of Mr. Magpie’s life when “Fantasy Football” is in season; perhaps because I get frustrated when the clock says that there are only 5 minutes left, but that 5 minutes magically turns into 2 hours.  So.slow.  At any rate, this postie is a far cry from the football stadium.  It’s an ode to my new best friend this season: tights.  Legwear.  Hosiery.  I would not have survived this brutal winter weather without you.  You lengthen and slim the leg, you go with everything, and you are so low-maintenance.  I love you.

Lately, I’ve been pairing lots of dresses with tights and sky-high heels.  I go weak in the knees at the thought of pairing this dusty-rose crepe dress (ALC, $675, MyTheresa) with black tights and black, platformed suede pumps (Jimmy Choo, $595, Net-A-Porter):

The look is very Chanel, and I dig it.  I’d add only some jet black enorma-studs (Yochi, $36, Max and Chloe) and an oversized clutch (love the lock detail — $195, Alexis Hudson):

Love.  At work, I’ve been playing around with shorter hemlines (don’t worry, nothing inappropriate — but I like skirts cut a few inches above the knee paired with black tights — anything below looks old school marmish).  I’m loving the idea of this vintage-style white blouse (very Yves St. Laurent — Clemens en August, $112, TheOutnet) with a tweed mini (Tibi, $133, TheOutnet), black tights, and some fierce footwear (these Giuseppe Zanottis are sick – $636, Bluefly):

Normally, I’d pair the above look with either some flats or some classic black patent pumps, but I love the silhouette of a long, lean leg ending in some heavy footwear.  And I’m dying over the mid-calf boot these days.  I might add this eye-catching 3.1 Phillip Lim necklace (love the tribal vibe — $275, Net-A-Porter) and some classic gold studs (on sale for $40, Rachel Leigh):

A chain-handled bag completes the look — vintage Chanel would be ideal (ha. — $2,766, Farfetch), but this $236 Kate Spade version has also caught my attention:

P.S. The above look should most definitely be sported with a BRIGHT, cherry red wool coat (J. Crew has lots of great styles in “torch orange” — a geranium reddish-orange hue — that are on sale currently):

I’ve also been into test-driving bolder prints at work, especially in the form of silky little skirts (the firework print version below is on sale for $79, Madewell) paired with black tights and simple black crewneck sweaters ($145, J. Crew):

I’d finish this look with some glittery earrings (the organic shape echoes the firework print on the skirt — Erickson Beamon, $480, Net-A-Porter):

And then add some uber-high black heels ($160, Nine West) and, ideally, a black Celine tote (a girl can dream…)”

I also like the silhouette of a starched, white bow-front blouse (Vivienne Westwood, $385, Matches) tucked into a printed, stiff-material skirt ($349, Tommy Hilfiger) and cinched with a vintage-looking feather-accented belt ($33, Diamonds and Pearls):

And then finished with black tights and sky-highs ($595, Net-A-Porter):

I’d add some glam earrings ($84, Janna Conner) and a slouchy black tote (Deux Lux, $150, Moxsie):

A couple of side notes about this look:

a) Obsessed with the bow-front blouse after checking out Jason Wu’s S/S ’11 collection.  O to the MG.

{image from vogue.com}

And P.S.: Olivia Palermo’s been spotted in the bow-front blouse style, and absolutely killed in it.

b)  I kind of stole this silhouette from Kourtney Kardashian, Magpie Maven extraordinaire.  Say what you will about the Kardashian clan — I love tuning into their shows {serious guilty pleasure}, and find Kourtney particularly trend-forward.

Stocking Up: The Magpie Men Edition

In Accessories, Gifts!, Magpie Men, Monograms, Neutrals, Plaid, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather on November 30, 2010 at 11:01 am

When I was younger, the goodies Santa left in our stockings were just as exciting as the presents left at the foot of the tree.  We’d find all kinds of exciting treats: jewelry, headbands, makeup, stationery, gift cards.  Santa always made the holidays that much more special by leaving us some big ticket items in our stockings, and it’s a tradition I plan to carry on in my own little nest.   Because Mr. Magpie and I are planning on scaling back on gifts this Christmas  (as Mr. Magpie put it, “Don’t you think this year was extravagant enough?” — and he’s right: a dramatic engagement at a gorgeous Virginia hotel — Keswick, how I love you; plenty of travel; all the many wedding-related purchases and festivities leading up to the big day; the showering of gifts from friends and family; the Big Day itself; bride and groom gifts; and then the decadent honeymoon at Turtle Inn in Placencia, Belize.  Yes, this past year has been over.the.top.), I’m thinking that in lieu of big presents, I’ll opt for the perfect stocking, filled with all of Mr. Magpie’s favorite things (and a few bonuses).  It occurred to me that this might be a novel approach to gift-giving this holiday season in a more general sense — something a little different, and a bit more inventive.  Test drive for yourself with some of the ideas that have been stewing around in my little Magpie mind for awhile now:

For the Foodie…

Mr. Magpie is a serious food-lover and an accomplished cook to boot.  I’ll begin with some of these cheerily-colored Kuhn Rikon knives.  We already own (and dearly love) a few of their paring knives — they have unique carbon steel blades that quite frankly never dull, they come in a rainbow of peppy shades, and they are shockingly affordable ($10 a pop, Kuhn Rikon):

Mr. Magpie is also a coffee snob.  Folgers just won’t do — we tend to score our beans at Baked & Wired in Georgetown (he grinds ‘em every morning and prepares the perfect cup for me), which carries Intelligentsia and Stumptown coffee.  A nice bag of the good stuff would be a welcome addition to the Christmas lode, although his parents rave about Illy, so I might just have to upgrade for the holidays ($28 for 2 cans, Illy):

And although we already have quite the spice collection (I mean — they pretty much have taken over the five shelves that constitute our “pantry cabinet”), a couple of well-selected newbies wouldn’t hurt, especially from a higher-end provider like Penzey’s or Dean & Deluca (as shown below — $55 for set of 9, Dean and Deluca):

I like that the French spice set above comes in a pretty little silver box — I’d just tie it up with gold and silver curling ribbon and tuck it in at the stocking top!  Spices are the perfect accompaniment to a gift of upscale grilling implements — I read about this Le Prince Jardinier brand awhile ago, and have always thought Mr. Magpie would adore them ($126 for set, Artedona):

Just thinking about all the yummy things he’ll make me on the grill leaves my stomach grumbling — and also makes me want to treat him to some specialty meats, ordered from a high-end, organic butcher like Niman Ranch (below; Ina Garten of the Barefoot Contessa swears by their bacon — and I’ve seen it carried relatively inexpensively at Trader Joe’s, at around $4 for 12 ozs), Surry Farms (their “Surryano Ham” is supposed to be ri.dic.u.lous and they are local Virginians!  Love!), or Vanderose Farms (Williams Sonoma carries their hams — and for a pretty penny: $169 for 18-21 lbs!):

We’ve recently gotten a little picky about our olive oils.  Our top choice is Frantoia’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil ($17.99, Amazon), which we first discovered at our favorite restaurant and fish market, Black Salt — it is fruity and oh-so-flavorful, and would be a happy surprise for Mr. Magpie, who insists that we not get too accustomed to the liquid gold, for fear of running our wallets empty on such unnecessary extravagances.

(We conserve the pricier olive oils for salad dressings, drizzles, etc — it would be wasteful to really cook with it!  For everyday cooking, we use Whole Foods’ house brand, which is remarkably well-priced and far more flavorful than any of the run-of-the-mill brands, like Pompeii.)  Shifting gears entirely, Mr. Magpie has a major sweet tooth, and though he has a soft spot for my Linzer Cookies (well…Martha Stewart’s Linzer Cookies) and chocolatey treats like SmittenKitchen’s Dulce de Leche Cheesecake Squares (which disappeared with alarming alacrity when I made them a few weeks ago for a dinner party), I’m sure he’ll find room in his stomach for these unbelievable peppermint pretzel slims that I just discovered at Trader Joe’s (yum, yum, YUM), or perhaps their Fleur de Sel caramels:

Finally, no foodie’s stocking would be complete without a little holiday cheer — Mr. Magpie is a beer guy, and he’s seriously into Victory right now, so I might consider a sampler of their finest.  Alternately, I might go with a classic Saison Dupont ale, just because it’s good (I’m not a beer-drinker, so I have this on good authority from my friend and beer expert, Orr Shtuhl, who writes the “Beerspotter” column for Washington’s City Paper) and it comes in a green bottle, so it fits with the holiday theme:

Of course, I know I’d never go wrong providing Mr. Magpie with his favorite of all beverages — bourbon.  He’s a fan of Woodford Reserve, but if I’m considering shaking things up, I always consult BlueKitchen, which provides rankings and descriptions for all of the best bourbons in the country.  And if your man doesn’t yet have a flask (Mr. Magpie inherited his uber-masculine, leather-front flask from his father), consider going with the classic Stanley version ($20, Stanley) — he’ll probably love that Teddy Roosevelt sipped whiskey out of his Stanley back in the day (and Hemingway sipped absinthe out of his).

(W.C. Fields was famous for having said: “Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake.”  Mr. Magpie would love that quote.)  And — for those of you whose boyfriends/husbands are into this kind of thing — there’s soon to be a new liquor on the shelves: Moonshine, bottled.  80 proof.  Not to be messed with, in my opinion.

For the Outdoorsman…

The Stanley flask is a good segue into gifts for the huntsman/outdoorsman — Mr. Magpie’s self-appointed role in the later years of our lives.  (When we stopped in Middleburg, VA for a dog show a few weeks ago — classic, upscale hunting town — he firmly made this decision.)  I like the idea of gifting a new hat in unexpected but hunting-appropriate khaki (Mr. Magpie and I went to UVA, so I’d pick this one from our classic ‘hoo gear retailer, Mincer’s — $17)  and then rolling up a perfect flannel shirt (APC, $195, Stuart and Wright), wrapping it in a red bow, and stuffing it in the stocking as well, as an unexpected, high-end surprise:

A pair of classic Duck boots by L.L. Bean might be a welcome replacement for the grimy hiking boots Mr. Magpie currently stows in his closet ($64, L.L. Bean), while these Ray Ban aviators ($139, Ray-Ban) would seal the deal:

And because you can never have enough plaid: this wallet — in bill-fold or credit card holder form — is a perfect upgrade from his somewhat old, tattered leather version ($125 and $95, respectively, Jack Spade):

The same “you can never have enough plaid” adage goes for these classic Penfield vests (comes in a variety of fabrics/patterns/colors, many of them featuring plaid in one way or another — $140-$300, Penfield):

Now, while Mr. Magpie already has a classic Swiss army version, this rosewood, anchor-adorned pocket knife ($45, BrookFarmStore) reminds me of him:

Perfect for outdoor escapades.  Speaking of outdoorsiness:  I’ve found that the “tougher” guys are oddly stubborn about using any products that might be perceived as feminine, so I can think of more than my fair share of gents that could benefit from a manly hand lotion, like this almost crudely titled “No Crack” cream ($11.90, Vermont Country Store), used by outdoorsmen around the world:

A key candidate for this cream would be my father, the ultimate manly-man in my eyes — just a few weeks ago, I happened to be at my parents’ house, and he came back from handling some type of yard work with blood literally gushing out of his leg.  When I asked concernedly if he was OK, he looked perplexed and then glanced down at his leg — casually — and shrugged, “Oh, just a scratch.”  (He’s 65, and still tough as nails.)  My father — like many of the outdoorsy type — is a consummate fisherman, and I can only imagine his glee at receiving this hardwood walnut fly book ($119, Orvis) along with some cherry-picked dry flies (this used to be my annual gift to him as a child — I would carefully pick out the prettiest dry flies from the casing at one of the angling shops in Aspen, CO, where we spent our summers growing up, and proudly present them to him on Christmas morning):

And — for inspiration — have him check out Hemingway’s short fiction (which, in my opinion, represents some of the most technically perfect writing you’ll find in the short story form — l.o.v.e. — $13.69, Amazon):

Just Because…

I’d originally titled this section “For the Gent,” but quickly discovered that the smorgasbord of items I was throwing into this category really fit no narrower a classification than the “Just Because.”  First up?  Some manly correspondence cards.  I’m in.love with Jack & Lulu’s stationery (I ordered some of their darling calling cards featuring my new last name within days of tying the knot!) and these notecards in stately gray-and-gold, featuring crossed swords (reminiscent of the UVA crossed sabers), are just about perfect ($18, Jack and Lulu) for Mr. Magpie:

Meanwhile, these Thomas Paul melamine coasters featuring sailors’ knots are right up Mr. Magpie’s alley ($16 for set of four, Orange and Pear), and would be perfect for protecting our wood furniture from the condensation on his monogrammed scotch glasses ($72 for set of 4, Williams-Sonoma):

I know that Mr. Magpie had his eye on a textured wool tie while we were shopping for his fall wardrobe at Ralph Lauren a few weeks ago (he’s a Ralph enthusiast — and that’s putting it mildly; I’d guess that about 75-80% of his wardrobe bears Mr. Lauren’s name), and these plaid Gitman Brothers ties would likely fit the bill ($49 apiece, Gitman Vintage):

Perfect for Christmas dinner.  Also perfect for Christmas?  These warm but masculine leather gloves, lined with checked thinsulate (Woolrich, $145, Need Supply):

…and just.because he deserves a little indulgence — not that I necessarily endorse gaming — I know that he’s been secretly eying the recently-released GoldenEye game for the Wii ($39, Amazon):

In reviewing the list above, I’m realizing that I have a lot less stocking stuffers than I do proper gifts.  Eh, well.  Looks like I’ll put off scrimping and saving til next year…no one wants to be a Scrooge!

It’s Trouser Time!

In Accessories, Fur, Neutrals, Pop of Red, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather, Work Wear on November 29, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Don’t know if any of my lovely magpies share my soft spot for trashy reality TV, but the title of this post is an adaptation of the catch-phrase sung by the ever-classy gents of MTV’s Jersey Shore (“It’s t-shirt tiiiime!”)  And scene.  The real point of this post is to discuss the resurgence of the menswear trouser that has been all.over.the.place this season thanks to the return of the 70s luxe look (and, principally, the exquisite taste of Hannah MacGibbon of Chloe).  I mean.  Don’t these gorgeous shots from European fashion retailer Massimo Dutti speak to you?!

I instantly want camel trousers and charcoal gray accents.  Done.and.done.  Something like this cozy turtleneck in warm pewter ($39, J. Crew), a skinny leather belt ($19, Modcloth), and these fit-n-flare Calvin Klein trousers in rich camel ($98, TheOutnet):

Finish with some super high pumps (Dolce Vita, on sale for $114, Heels) and this gorgeous Prada bucket bag (I’m really loving the line of timeless, luxe-looking bags they’ve released this season — my favorite is this one, but the bucket bag below wouldn’t hurt, either — $1,395, Barney’s):

Love the idea of offsetting the slouching softness of the look with a stiff wool jacket in heather gray ($395, J. Crew) and these luxe fur-lined gloves by MaxMara ($175, Farfetch):

For something in a totally different color palette, I am dying over the idea of a pair of a feminine ivory blouse (the Balmain below is literal perfection, but I’m almost ashamed to tell you how much it costs…get the look for less here or here), tucked into some dramatic, high-waisted black trousers (Michael Kors, $695, Net-A-Porter) cinched with this darling Philip Lim belt ($175, La Garconne):

Pair it with a pop-of-red clutch ($250, Reiss) and the Louboutin “Elisa” (adore the very modest platform — $625, Barney’s):

Top it all off with my favorite statement cape of the season — Phillip Lim’s mohair and wool blend checked wonder ($1,100, Net-A-Porter) — um, d.i.e.:

The cape would also pair excellently with a nude-and-white patterned blouse ($175, Reiss ), a nude belt (didn’t realize how much I was into the equestrian accented belt until this post…$32, House of Frasier), some wide-legged gray trousers (Miu Miu, $466, MyTheresa — though you can get the look for less at Talbots), and some Stella McCartney inspired pointy-toed pumps (affordable alert! — $95, Instilo):

Finish with a patent nude bag (this puppy mirrors the shape of the Prada dream bag I mentioned earlier, but rings in at a fraction of the price — $51, ASOS):

Ready to trouser it up?

The Royal Treatment

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Neutrals, Pop of Red, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather on November 23, 2010 at 10:20 am

If you haven’t yet had your fix of media on the recent engagement of Prince William to Kate Middleton — well, join the club.  I’ve been following the recently betrothed couple with great interest, especially after I watched — with rapt attention — their first news interview, in which a slightly nervous, clearly excited, and somewhat cheeky Kate responds to pointed questions about her upcoming nuptials, plans for children, and potential role as queen of England.  There was something so endearing and candid about her somewhat flustered responses — especially as a counterpoint to Prince William’s more rehearsed, polished delivery.  I’m in insta-fan, especially in light of her accessible fashion sense.  I like the idea that someone so frequently thrust into the spotlight can retain a down-to-earth, level-headed sartorial sensibility — the fact that she seems to stay true to a consistent (slightly conservative, slightly preppy, slightly downtown-chic) “look” points to an admirable self-assuredness.  And that’s always something that deserves the — well, royal treatment.

The above outfit may seem a bit “everyday” but I love everything about it — the durable tote, the solid black getup.  And Kate is queen when it comes to toppers/outerwear.  Get the look by pairing your own canvas weekender ($395, Calypso-Celle), a “country” coat (Barbour is the classic, but there’s something pitch-perfect about this Steven Alan slicker — $348, Steven Alan) , some black skinnies, and some unfussy black flat boots ($450, Simply Soles):

She’s also frequently spotted in blazers — something likes this tweed blazer seems to be up her alley ($325, J. Crew), paired with white skinnies (she rocks them in a major way):

Finish with this  luxe leather tote ($285, Foley and Corinna) and coordinating, polished riding boots ($198, Vince Camuto):

Perfect for the occasional polo match.  She’s also been spotted featuring her signature white skinnies in slightly less buttoned-up ensembles –

Go for it yourself with a breezy tunic (on sale for $129, Calypso) and your white skinnies:

While she might be inclined towards ivory or nude-colored flats, I like the idea of finishing with a chic python print flat (Ralph Lauren, $69, Macy’s) and this gorgeous putty satchel (l.o.v.e. the tassel accent — why am I so drawn to the tassel?! — $325, Elaine Turner):

(Love the concert of nudes/ivories/whites in this get-up.  So chic.)  You’ll note that I’ve been exercising some very un-magpie restraint in terms of jewelry/accessory add-ons: Ms. Middleton is rarely seen without a ladylike watch (she sports something like this seriously discounted Stuhrling timepiece — only $110, Endless)…but that’s about as far as she goes.

For more formal events, she gravitates towards v-neck wrap dresses — something like this DVF in a cheering Hermes-esque orange would probably be up her alley ($365, Diane Von Furstenberg):

Orange can be difficult to match with accessories, but a pair of nude pumps never do you wrong, and these puppies are perfection (Rupert Sanderson, $586, MyTheresa):She looked positively regal in the royal blue dress (by Issa — now sold out) she wore for her engagement announcement — what a perfect way of showcasing her sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring (famously, the bauble was Princess Di’s engagement ring as well)!

Achieve a similar look with this belted Milly dress ($420, StyleBop) and a pair of suede heels (the Choo “Cosmics” are a new favorite of mine — just enough of a platform to be fierce, without looking vampy/trampy  — $695, Net-A-Porter):

(These less expensive — $125! — and slightly more aggressive sueded TopShop platforms are another viable option.) If you’re starstruck by the drama of her sapphire dress, check out this Piccadilly Pleats Dress ($158, Madewell):

She might finish with a black tuxedo jacket and an unfussy black clutch, as she did earlier this year.  Alternately, if you’re into the Halston-era vibe she’s channeling in her jersey blue dress, opt for the Halston Heritage number that caused such an uproar last season in a glimmering gem tone, like this emerald or this ruby ($354, MyTheresa):

Either would pop against this gray suede pump — the perfect season-appropriate finish ($114, Lori’s Shoes):

Layer an ivory wool coat — I adore the version she’s sporting below — atop ($230, John Lewis):

Alternately, complete the layered look above by pairing your ivory topper with a silky, long-sleeved dress ($138, Madewell), some tights ($20, Lori’s Shoes), and a pair of sueded, low-heeled boots ($298, Madewell)

Love the idea of an approachable member of the royal family — chin chin to the newly engaged!

A Wintry Mix

In Accessories, Glitter, Jewelry, Romantic, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather on November 9, 2010 at 11:23 am

I spent quite a bit of time “talking holiday logistics” with my girlfriends this past weekend, and then received not one — not two — but three invitations to holiday cookie exchanges today.   We are officially headed towards holiday season, and it appears that my December is already gobbled up with delicious, felicitous little activities.  This makes me want to buy a slew of “holiday shimmer” pieces to mix and match — no cocktail dresses (yet), just skirts and blouses and happy, sparkly accents.  The first thing on my lust list?  A silky little blouse in fetching cream-on-blush ($175, Reiss) tucked into this perfect-for-the-holidays tiered skirt by Diane Von Furstenberg ($385, DVF):

Finish with these made-for-the-skirt Kate Spade heels (swoon — these are my aesthetic, to a tee! — on sale for $225, Simply Soles) and a silvery-gray-mineral envelope clutch in textured calf-hair ($198, Jessica Jensen):

Finish with some sparkling enorma-studs ($140, Ben Amun), a coordinating deco bracelet (Badgley Mischka, $285, Charm and Chain), and a classy ivory topper ($595, Rebecca Taylor):

I am equally smitten with this shimmery-sweet metallic-thread dress ($325, Net-A-Porter) with some classic gold pumps ($625, BrownsFashion):

Any gold clutch’d do, but this Barney’s version is pretty much picture perfect with this look ($750, Barney’s) — as are these be.yond gorgeous vintage Christian Dior studs (be still my heart — $534, ASOS):

Love the casual cargo style in the dressy silky fabric, done up with ladylike accents.  Perfect.  Go for a slightly less-dressy look with this t-shirt style dress ($248, French Connection) and a pair of ladylike flats ($99, Simply Soles):

Finish with some sparkling enorma-studs ($410, Net-A-Porter) and a pearl bracelet ($85, Carolee):

Alternately, how about tucking this glittery tee ($325, La Garconne) with a boucle ivory mini ($225, Rebecca Taylor):

Layer on a sparkling necklace ($110, Ben Amun) and finish with some glitzy heels ($200, Nordstrom):

Die over the idea of slipping a capelet on top (Vanessa Bruno, $885, Farfetch):

Alternately, pair the above capelet with some skinnies and a lovely pair of satin flats ($64, Endless):

Finish with some blingy ear candy ($65, Carolee), a gold-accented ring ($129, Zappos), and a coordinating blush over-the-shoulder bag ($395, Lauren Merkin):

(You may also need a little perk-me-up when you take off your statement cape, so consider this gorgeous Marni-esque beaded necklace — $315, Vionnet Boutique:

Don’t you love and adore?!)  Another chic daywear-with-holiday-flair look?  A heathered tee ($55, J. Crew) beneath a mongolian fur vest (on sale for $288, My Wardrobe), with jeans:

Finish with some sparkly flats ($59, PiperLime), a glittery clutch (a.dore this J. Crew style and want it in both colors it comes in, including this sleek graphite — $138, J. Crew) and a bow ring (Juicy Couture, $68, Zappos):

Love.  If you’re a golden gal, consider pairing a neutral, blousey top ($325, La Garconne) with a wrapped-bead necklace in gold ($123, Charm and Chain) and a stack of glittering bangles ($140, Charm and Chain):

Finish with jeans and some glittery heels ($160, Nine West) for a festive look:

Pair with this beaded tweed clutch ($198, J. Crew):

And speaking of tweed — how much do you die over this silky tweed top ($210, The Outnet), paired with skinny jeans and these embellished tweed pumps ($225, Nordstrom)?

Finish with this gorgeous “ice princess” bib necklace ($595, Kate Spade) and a chain handle bag ($225, Henri Bendel):

I don’t know about you, but I’m loving the fashion forecast…
