Confetti

In Accessories, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, White on April 24, 2013 at 11:12 am

First – the title of this post makes my mouth water for a confetti sprinkle cupcake.  You know — the super-fake, non-organic, boxed Pillsbury mix?  Yum.

Second – fresh whites paired with pops of BRIGHT confetti color.  That’s what I want right now.  Partly inspired by these cheery seaside photos (image 1; image 2 — both $19+ depending on size and frame) from Minagraphy.  Slightly reminiscent to me of Maison Gray’s genius, but at a fraction of the prix.

For example, I am loving this cheery aqua necklace (Hyla Dewitt, $130) with this great, slightly hippy-dippie macrame dress ($150 — loves.  Coachella chic, ladies.)

Or, maybe a little white-on-white action in the form of this pair of white scalloped shorts ($60) and this beautiful gauzy blouse ($195), accented with this simple cord-and-bead necklace ($33! — love Etsy):

And now for the POW.  I like them — unexpectedly — with these pointy toed ombre neon snakeskin flats (Loeffler Randall, $275), which I would wear every day of the week and twice on Tuesday…need.

AND this mega-great bag in stark white ($308):

Or: this adorbs pink-and-white dress ($140; love the shape — keeps it from being too cutesy) with this phenom oh-so-covetable marble and crystal stunner ($68 — love when necklaces incorporate unusual materials like wood, marble, etc.):

***Spoiler alert: This post ends with a FAB giveaway for an amazing necklace…soooo make sure you read to the very end.***

Oh, hello, April.  So, so happy to see you and your attendant warmer weather.  It was nearly 60 degrees when Mr. Magpie and I landed in Chicago yesterday after spending the weekend with our families in D.C.  It’s making me want to buy a lot of warm-weather things in my favorite pastel-meets-bright palette (read: lots of lavender with accents in chartreuse and coral).  For starters, I love these eyelet shorts ($69) with this blousy top (DVF, $132) and this chunky necklace ($333):

Crew.  I’ve been dreaming about it since I first saw it.  Must buy.)  I loveeee these Charlotte Olympia tootsies ($975) with this look:

Coloratura

In Beach Wear, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Pastels, Shoes, Sundresses, White on February 28, 2013 at 10:01 am

One of my love bugs mentioned in a comment on a recent post that she has been stockpiling lots of colorful goodies in her closet for spring, whenever spring decides to rear her lovely head.  I’m teetering dangerously on the edge of following suit — I keep wanting to buy everything on the Calypso St. Barth site (i.e., all things beachy/summery, with LOTS of great spring colors).  My top pick from their collection?  This flowy hi-lo dress ($450). BA.NA.NAS.  I’m imagining myself (or a very tall, tanned version of myself) wearing this with my hair all beach wavy.

Screen Shot 2013-02-27 at 4.55.43 PM

I’m not afraid of color — are you?!  Good.  Check out these ultra-covetable Thierry Lasry shades, and let’s both wish we had enough dough to drop $475 on a pair of sunnies.

Screen Shot 2013-02-27 at 4.56.56 PM

I like them with my favorite color combo du jour — lavender, in the form of this silky little top (on sale for $69), and BRIGHT orange, in the form of this necklace (on sale for $89), with white jeans and perfect metallic sandals (Rebecca Minkoff, $165):

I’m also gaga over this sweet little neon coral number (only $80!), and I’d wear it with a statement necklace ($48 — yah, yah, I know I featured this badboy already, but can you beat the price or the on-trend colors?!  No.).

The coup de gras?!  These unexpected, FAB green tootsies by the ever-imaginative Charlotte Olympia ($901).  I know they are borderline cray-cray, but I think you can rock them OUT.

{These shoes remind me of a pair of pillows that I considered purchasing for our nest — isn’t this palm frond pattern BEYOND?! I ended up with this pattern instead to incorporate more colors into our living room, and sweat them in a serious way.  Does anyone else still use the word “sweat” as a verb, or am I the only 90s chickadee who uses that term?!}  This conversation in turn reminds me of these AMAZING C. Wonder pillows ($38 a pop) that I discovered recently.  LOVE this print.

Screen Shot 2013-02-27 at 6.13.51 PM

Since the color scheme (and warm weather clothing) above are tres Palm Beach chic, I gotta conclude with this funky little letterpress flamingo print ($16) — cute no?!

Screen Shot 2013-02-27 at 6.20.09 PM

This would look so precious mixed in with other prints in a gallery wall, all framed in pristine white.  Lovely.  And if you want to bring that flamingo print to life, check out this darling flamingo print two-piece from Tory Burch ($135 for top; $95 for bottom): sanib

Packing a Punch

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, White on February 26, 2013 at 10:38 am

Here’s a haiku* for you:

My parents have a winter home in Florida.

They have spent the better part of the past few weeks there.

I am horribly jealous.

Blarg.  I am so sick of jamming my legs into jeans and boots.  Jeans and boots.  Jeans and boots. Lather, rinse, repeat.  (Although I did manage to recently score these Loeffler Randall wonders on RIDIC sale, so I am not quite as furious about the boots part.) *For my lit ladies out there: I do know that this is not, in the strict sense, a haiku.  FYI.  In case you’re thinking I failed my poetry seminars.  And while I have your attention, have any of you read “Flaubert’s Parrot” by Julian Barnes?  Some thoughts: A) Reading this book has rekindled my love of literature — have not felt so excited about a book in a long time; B) This book led me on an Amazon binge and I wound up with Gustave’s letters, volume 1; Gustave’s “A Simple Heart”; and George Sand’s “Indiana.”  I literally cannot read quickly enough – so excited to digest it all; and C) Am contemplating reading Sartre’s “Family Idiot,” a study of Flaubert, afterward, but almost feel that without the support of a classroom discussion, I’ll drown.  Sartre scares me almost as much as Hegel, who tormented me in graduate school.  If I need to draw diagrams to understand a paragraph of prose, I find myself distressed.  One last footnote, for those of you wondering: “Why Flaubert?”  Well, Barnes will quickly cultivate and nurture a love affair with his genius in his book, which is a curious blend of lit crit, autobiography (presumably), and fiction.  Barnes’ summary of Gustave?

“The hermit of Croisset.  The first modern novelist.  The father of Realism.  The butcher of Romanticism.  The pontoon bridge linking Balzac to Joyce.  The precursor of Proust.  The bear in his lair.  The bourgeois bourgeoisophobe.  In Egypt, ‘the father of the Moustache.’..all these titles were acquired by a man indifferent to ennobling forms of address.  ‘Honours dishonour, titles degrade, employment stupefies.”

I mean — anyone else giddy as a gumdrop reading this?  Barnes packs a powerful punch in  his writing — so dense, so visual.  Not a word out of place — “the pontoon bridge.”  Ah!  In love!

So, from geeking out over a book to geeking out over a different form of artistry: let’s talk about fashion that packs a punch and that I would happily throw in a suitcase on my way to FL.  (Mom and Dad, don’t be surprised if I show up on your doorstep in sunny Naples.)  First: I know it’s pricey but I wantttt this blouse (Simone Rocha, $1,095), and I’d wear it with this tone-on-tone necklace ($128), white skinnies, and some platinum sandals (these are kids’ sized, but they run very large…I can fit into them…$35):

Frosting

In Accessories, Bombshell, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Fur, Glitter, Gold, Jewelry, Pastels, White on February 25, 2013 at 11:58 am

I am headed to The Big Apple this weekend for a dear friend’s engagement party, and though I was hell-bent on “shopping the closet” (in part because I know I own 3489 cocktail dresses that scarcely see the light of day, and in part because I spent hours and hours perusing online and didn’t see much to my liking), I began to panic last week when I realized I actually hate everything in my closet.  Well — less hate, more ennui in the fin de siecle style (i.e., yawn and look down with distaste).  Does this happen to anyone else?  Then I watched the Oscars last night (delightful) and wished I could step up my game.  If I could wear anything this weekend, I would wear this gilded wonder from Lanvin.  Don’t worry, it will only require that you re-mortgage your house and sell your car.  (How can it cost nearly $7K?!)  But isn’t she lovely?!  Amazing with some mint green-accented earrings ($80):

I mean.  I need it all.  Orrr — NOT for the engagement party, but in the same palette — check out this stunning statement shirt ($150), which is at the top of my shopping list.  I know it’s a little early to think about white jeans, but this will be a BANANAS outfit for the spring, especially with these stunning clips (Bijoux Heart, $530 — or, approximate the look with these fun, budget-friendly little studs) and some fun sandals (Kate Spade, $238):

Screen Shot 2013-02-25 at 9.41.32 AMwheatInspired by the looks above, I seriously considered this metallic jacquard number, which is conveniently on sale for only $136 now.  Love that it HINTS at the peplum style, but without the actual volume.  (And P.S., if you’re still loving peplum, check out this Nicholas wonder, which I also briefly considered.)  But I’m still undecided…

A Cool, Cool Beverage

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Fresh Combos, Gym Gear on February 11, 2013 at 10:45 am

After last week’s rant on the weather, I realized I’d forgotten about that one solitary day of lovely “warm” (i.e., 40-plus-degree) weather we had two weeks ago — warm enough to take a long run outside in the middle of January in Chicago.  It was absolutely glorious.  I now know what a bear feels like once it has emerged from hibernation — I felt like I was running at the speed of light.  I was just ecstatic to be outside, in the world, rather than trapped on the elliptical or, worse, treadmill (I literally count to 60 over and over again until I can get off of that contraption) at my gymnasium.  I also had a new suite of songs to listen to, which put a little extra gas in the tank, and at the top of that list is Ellie Goulding’s “Anything Could Happen.”  OMG, this is one of those songs where you feel like you’re conquering the universe and dominating lives as you run.  Check out my other picks by clicking the image below (it will get bigger).

The experience led to a new burst of exercise enthusiasm further bolstered by some new fitness gear purchases.  First — some new running leggings.  I love all things Nike when it comes to work-out gear — their products last, they fit well, and they aren’t exorbitantly priced (ahem, Lululemon).  I bought their Pro Core II Compression capris ($40) in heather gray.  Super comf.  I wore mine with a persimmon orange sports bra (genius because it’s reversible, so you can play with color – $15), a new running headband ($10) — a must because I recently got bangs –and a plain white tee (I buy Hanes little boy tees in bulk — they are SUPER soft, have no tags, and serve a wonderful purpose in their afterlife as dust rags):

workout

Perfecto.  (Side note: I must admit that when I’m not wearing Nike running gear, I will wear my one pair of Lululemon Inspire II running leggings.  They’re smartly designed and fit wonderfully.  But I feel guilty spending nearly $100 on a pair of running pants…)  I also recently bought some new lavender Nike Free Runs ($100).  The Nike Free Runs have changed my life.  They are so light-weight and yet provide plenty of cushioning.  Love.

I layer with my new lavender half-zip pullover ($55) similar to the ones shown below, which I’d also considered buying ($89):

(My Gap style won out because, well, there’s a Gap beneath my gym.  And also because my Gap one has extra long sleeves with thumb openings to keep your hands even warmer while running.)  When I’m running, I like a light-weight windbreaker to protect myself from the elements without making me too hot (not usually a concern in Chicago, but I’ll only go running when it’s above 45 degrees.  Otherwise, my eyes turn into faucets and just run for the entire time.  Highly unpleasant and slightly dangerous since I can’t see while tears are streaming from my eyes.  Also, I probably look like the most emo chickadee that ever ran the streets of Chi-town: just sprinting full-force, with tears flowing.)  Anyway, I found this cheery style at Gap, on sale ($47), and in now seeing my little collection of lavender, white, gray, and bright orange/red, I’m thinking I may need to add these lilac-tipped running capris to my cart ($50):

pinkrunning

When I’m not running (outside or on the treadmill), I use Tracy Anderson’s videos.  They are such great little workouts, and she just released a new 15-minute session in conjunction with Gwyneth Paltrow’s uber popular blog, goop.  (I enjoy Lady Paltrow’s blog, but she can be excessively snobby about things.  One of her posts mentioned selecting her air travel plans based on the type of plane she would be taking, as some were more comfortable and accommodating than others…woosh, right over my peon head.)

Someone sneaky (God bless you) has also posted a bunch of Tracy Anderson’s webisodes to YouTube and the leg/thigh workout routine in particular is incredible.  It only takes 15 minutes and your legs burn for days.  For these workouts, I wear yoga pants (love this pair I also scored from Gap recently…are you noticing a trend?!) and a sports bra.  (These workouts make you sweat — and also involve a lot of different crazy moves that can become cumbersome with a lose-fitting tee-shirt.  I roll out my yoga mat ($29) and dust off my dumbells (“3 lbs or less” is Tracy’s mantra — she claims anything heavier will make you bulk…which is fine by me because 3 lbs of resistance for her exercises KILLS — $9).  I also need a towel at the ready, and these eQua fitness hand towels are super absorbent ($16):

mat

Oh — and don’t forget lots.and.lots of H20 — a cool, cool beverage (title of post and also my favorite line from Kanye’s “Clique”) — especially when in one of these CamelBak bottles ($14):

bottles

The other essential is, of course, my iPod shuffle ($49).  This is the most genius Apple product ever.  It is super light and clips onto the band of your running pants.  Every month or so, I’ll update the contents to include some fresh jams.  It’s perfect.

Also — die over the colors.  Now, just because I’m working out doesn’t mean I look sloppy.  I don’t like when girls wear a full face of makeup to the gym, but I will make sure to swipe on some blush (love this natural color from Benefit — $28) and waterproof mascara ($25 — I swear by this stuff!) beforehand.  I keep Neutrogena makeup wipes, Tocca solid perfume in the Cleopatra scent ($30), Dove deodorant in Wild Rose (I think this kind of deodorant claims to be “hair growth impeding,” but I don’t think that’s accurate…the scent is great, though — non-deodorant-ish!  I hate the smell of baby powder so it works out well for everyone), and hand sanitizer in my gym bag at all times, too.  (I’m religious about sanitizing after the gym — lots gross sweaty people using the equipment and NOT wiping it down afterwards.  Tsk, tsk.)

essentials

I throw it all in my gym bag (recently, I’ve been using a beautiful chalk-colored Kooba bag called the Barkley, which is no longer available):

kooba

My sole requirement for a gym bag?  It has to have lots of pockets and enough structure to stand up straight.  So, ladieeees?  Anyone else revved up for a gym session?!

And I know I’ve posted a lot about blue color schemes.  But, here I am again, with more.  I just keep tripping over great styles and I can’t help but feature.  Hope you’re into this moody hue as well.  What about this cool tye-dye dress ($235), for example?  Very Kate Bosworth at Coachella, circa 2011.  Especially finished with this amazing Kelly Wearstler pendant ($385):

Bright Eyes

In Accessories, Brights!, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Pastels, Shoes on February 6, 2013 at 12:40 pm

Did I tell you that last Friday, weather.com said it “felt like -19″ outside when I woke up?  Negative 19, people.  Negative. Nineteen.  As my bestie put it: “I have no frame of reference for what -19 feels like.”  Neither do I.  Nor do I want one.

I’ve been fomenting my own rebellion against the weather by wearing the brightest clothes I own.  Last week, I dusted off my hot pink jeans and pulled out a blue-and-neon-yellow LemLem style scarf and wore them with reckless abandon.  Boom goes the dynamite.  (Or, this act of vengeance did nothing to curb the cold temps.)

I shouldn’t be so grouchy — I do love the fact that it snowed for a few days in a row this past week.  Chicago is beautiful in the snow, and I love the view from our bedroom when it’s snowing.  We have glass doors that look out onto a patio in our bedroom and it’s snuggly to watch the snow fall at night.  It also meant that Mr. Magpie and I “stayed in” most of the weekend, cooking, drinking wine, and watching a million movies.  (We saw “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” and “End of Watch” in the span of 24 hours.  Lame or impressive?  Have you seen any of these?  Thoughts, please.)

But, to the point at hand: BRIGHT separates to improve my spirits.  First — how much do we love this peplum top in the cheeriest neon ever (Tibi, $385)?  Temper with rugged jeans (Current/Elliott’s “The Stiletto,” $228) and finish with a bright coral necklace ($88) and these strappy sandals ($100):

Hodge Podge

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Gold, Home Decor, Jewelry, Pastels, Shoes, Sundresses, White on January 25, 2013 at 10:23 am

Welcome to the weekly circus — the round of up items I have my (apparently A.D.D.-ridden) eyes on at the moment.  A few of you have told me that you like this kind of “everything but the kitchen sink” post a lot, so I’ll keep ‘em coming.  Ready, set, go.

COVET1The x-based bench is not a new phenomenon by any stretch of the imagination.  I’m pretty sure that every bloggerina in the universe owns a pair, along with ikat pillows, a chevron rug, and a gallery wall.  (Just telling it like it is.)  So in a sense I’m a little bashful that this is my number one stunna this week, because I just read an interesting interview with Jamie Meares of Furbish Studio {I love that site a little too much…I snagged these puppies and this funky little doo-dad most recently}, the takeaway of which was: “Be yourself.  Stop copy-catting.” {The other takeaway is that she studied Literature as an undergrad.  Hells yeah, humanities!  Here’s to application-less undergrad degrees and how they can sometimes prove not so useless!}  Still.  When I saw that, I began second-guessing my plans to make a soft-pitch to Mr. Magpie that we definitely, definitely, definitely need a pair of coral x-based ottomans in our living room in order to introduce some color and offset the lovely hue in our new pillows.  But then I looked at the x-based ottomans again and really really wanted them, so here they are, at two price points (Hi: Serena and Lily, $650; lo: Ballard Designs, $189+ depending on fabric)

hilo

And in case you’re wondering what the big fuss with these x-based ottomans is, check out these glam set-ups prominently featuring these little guys:

Oh, and check out the uber-chic and yet attainable/livable digs of fellow Chicagoan Nathalie of Mint Love Social Club.  Those $60 x ottomans?  Get OUTTA here.  I wish they were still available.  Harrumph.

COVET2While we’re talking house (I’m obsessed right now — as I said, I go in fits and starts, wanting to buy a million things all at the same time to make some upgrades and then living with it for a few months before getting the decorating bug again), can we just chat quickly about how cool these lucite letters ($95 apiece) from her ladyship Tory Burch are?!

tb1Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 2.52.37 PM Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 2.52.43 PMCOVET3I love this dotted, tasseled scarf from DVF ($177).  I imagine wearing it as a sarong with HUGE (we’re talking face-shield-level) black shades on the beach and feeling very smug about it.

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 2.56.15 PM

COVET4Can I tell you a secret?  I started using some serious anti-aging products January 1st of this year.  A New Year’s resolution, if you will.  I know I still look very young — I’m carded more often than not, and — this is not a lie — I was once mistaken for a 12-year-old child when I was 21 years old.  So.  If I’m projecting an age that’s actually a decade my junior, why would I be worried about aging?  The issue is the very beginning of wrinkles.  ACK.  I’m 28, and I am starting to see wrinkles.  What.  So I pulled out the big guns and started using Stri-Vectin Intensive Concentrate for Stretch Marks and Wrinkles ($69) on the recommendation of a girlfriend of mine.  I’m liking what I see so far, though I’ll be the first to admit that I’m prone to the placebo effect, i.e., thinking that things are happening just because I think they should be.  (Also, I really wish Stri-Vectin would revisit their marketing and packaging decisions.  I know they’re trying to pitch a “science-forward”/”clinical study” feel, but it kind of makes me think I’m taking medicine, and I hate medicine.  And I like pretty packages that I can display proudly in my medicine cabinet rather than bury at the back of a jammed drawer.  Sorry, Stri-Vectin, you’ll be relegated to bottom of the drawer status until I see a classy new package.)  Anyhoo, all of this is to say I’ve also been open to testing out facial products other than Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer (which I’ve cherished for a decade now), and this Trish McEvoy multi-purpose product is now on my radar ($75):

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 2.59.08 PM

What do you use?  Any suggestions?

COVET5I know I just featured a pair of Erickson Beamon’s earrings in a recent covet list, but these ($360) are also phenom.  UGHHH.  I love.

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 3.11.46 PMI’m so into lavender these days — I want lavender jeans, lavender pajamas, lavender walls, a lavender pencil skirt, lavender heels…

COVET6Case in point: this Alice and Olivia wonder ($495).  The texture is knit (like a sweater) – so fab!

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 3.19.50 PM Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 3.19.57 PM

I feel like this dress is so not my style these days, but I just couldn’t get over the perfect design.  Feminine in the front, a hint of sexy in the back.  The genius/unusual fabrication and color choice.  Ahh.  A breath of fresh (spring) air, n’est-ce pas?  Perfect for a bridal shower, a late winter/early spring wedding with silver/lucite/pink accents.  Too good.

COVET7Now, I don’t need any other small leather accessories (seriously…never again in my life), but this Smythson card carrier ($280) is so lovely.  I love all of the details.

WALLETCOVET8Inspired by this post on La Dolce Vita, I’ve been craving a tropical getaway with lots of palm trees.  I want to wear these dramatic earrings (House of Lavande, $918), with this breezy white mini (to die for — $180), and these outrageous Charlotte Olympias, just for kicks (on sale for $622) — though you probably couldn’t walk, let alone kick, in those shoes).

palmCOVET9One of my favorite Christmas gifts from Mr. Magpie was an Aerolatte frother ($19).  I was feeling tremendous guilt for spending $4.50 or whatever obscene price Starbucks is currently charging for their skinny lattes when Mr. Magpie would so kindly make me coffee at home every morning.  But sometimes a girl just wants a latte.  Problem solved: with this little gadget, I heat up my skim milk on the stovetop or in the microwave, use this little doo-dad until it froths up, and then pour it into my coffee with some splenda.  New morning ritual.

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 3.44.46 PM

COVET10

And to cap it all off with something truly left-field, this limited edition Cook + Gates duffel ($158) is just the sort of unexpected accessory you’d find on the arm of a REALLY cool fashionista, kind of like the first time we all saw the Cambridge Satchel and were like, “Uh, woahhhhh.  Someone’s got it poppin‘.” (Nicki Minaj voice.)  And now we’re bored of that.

This month has been tough, y’all.  After the Extravagance (yes, capital E is warranted) of the holidays, I felt like I needed to reign it in and “shop my closet.”  (Blech. Hate that phrase. One of the fashion glossies I was flipping through on the elliptical the other day proclaimed: “It’s so fun to shop your closet!”  Ew.  People that say it’s fun must either a) be Olivia Palermo, or b) be lying to themselves.)  But there are so.so. many things that are vying for my attention and my wallet…what is a girl to do?  (P.S. Thanks, Caroline, for pointing out that the ALC dress I was swooning over is on sale for $199 at the Outnet.  I’m almost barfing I want it so badly.  Sick image, I apologize.)  On this week’s radar?

COVET1Just when you thought you’d seen enough sloafers to satisfy you for the rest of eternity, the coolest of the pack emerge.  Yes.  These Missoni puppies ($575) are It.  I die over them.  I die.  Can you imagine pairing them with just a simple navy blazer and white jeans?!

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 7.57.11 PM

Love the color, love the texture, love pattern.  And kind of love that they don’t scream Missoni.

COVET2

I’ve been on the hunt for a great mini cross-body in a fun color for the upcoming spring season.  I had this amazing white one from Rebecca Minkoff, but it got all rubbed up and dirty, and now bears a certain air of dinginess that I just can’t permit.  These J. Crew minis ($148) will be hard to pass up.

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 7.59.36 PM Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 7.59.42 PM Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 7.59.47 PM

That yellow one is calling my name.  Imagine it popping against a denim shirt or a striped blouse.  Incroyable.

COVET3

I’m very sad about this.  I found the rug of my dreams ($140+ depending on size) and it was sold out.  Do you love?!  I know that oriental rugs are the jam, but I often find them to be a little ornate for my current decorating style.  The color and scale of pattern in the one below is just.perfect.

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 8.02.50 PM

It might be for the best.  Mr. Magpie may have thrown a small fit when I asked him to hang two new pieces of wall art in our bedroom, as one was a fashion drawing my uber-talented baby sister (similar one from Jessica Durrant below — $25) had sketched for me and the other was this ink-and-paper sketch of the L’Arc de Triomphe ($50).

Oops.  I think I may need to dial back on the femininity.  On the upside, he promised that when we buy a house, I could have my own office and paint it pink if I so desired.  I won’t, though — I am really into lavender right now.  I think I want a lilac-hued office accented with gold and white.  But that’s a story for another day.  And if that rug above had been available, I may have been inclined to change that plan of action.

COVET4Every few months, I want to invest in new pajamas.  This pair by Equipment ($388) is insanely overpriced…a little scary, in fact…but they look oh-so-cozy.  And the print is perfection.

HI

But…I will probably end up with these fun little lobster jammies ($12).  Affordable, cute, done.

LOCOVET5I love new coffee table / bookshelf eye candy.  Ours tend to center on food — we probably have 100 cookbooks between the two of us — so this beautiful modern + contemporary art book ($30) would be a welcome change of pace.

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 9.55.41 PM

I’d like it situated amongst some other fun accents, like a  pair of foos ($58 — I’m obsessed.) in white and these funky bolster pillows in retro-chic fabric ($210):

COVET6Pastels are gonna be huge this spring — lavender, mint, pale pink.  Boom.  This Gap tote ($110) is the perfect way to hit the trend without over-committing.  Also, I just love the unfussy simplicity.

mintCOVET7

Stripes are basically a neutral for me.  I own more stripes than you could shake a stick at (…?  Never understood that colloquialism, so thought I’d take it out for a spin.)  I love the breezy, easy-on fit of this silky tank ($98), which is just CALLING for summer.  Hit the pastel trend with some coral jeans (J. Brand, $178) and some gilded gladiators ($138):

Obsessed with all things Erickson Beamon, but especially this darling pair of enorma-studs ($315).  I’d wear with everything — my cream nubby Chanel-esque tweed jacket; a simple denim shirt – and – jeans combo; a sheath; a feminine blouse and skinnies.  Ah.  Need.

You should mos’ def’ check out the entire Biscuit Home site — the prettiest bedding, including amazing crib sheets for those mamas out there (how adorbs is this bicycle print for a little boy, or this beautiful floral for une petite fille?) and these upholstered headboards are just too good.  UGH.

COVET10I love the composition and colors in this Alison Cooley print ($100).  I wish that the original was available — definitely something I’d consider splurging on.  It would look so lovely in my (oh so girly) room, which has a whole corner full of artwork in peachy-pink, black, and gold.

Alright my love bugs, that’s it!  Cheers to the freakin’ weekend.  (I’ll drink to that.  Yeyeahhh.)*

The title of this post may call to mind the universe’s most exclusive high school clique ever, commandeered by the one and only Regina George, BUT this is not an homage to “Mean Girls,” great movie that it is.  (Also, an interesting pre-apocalyptic study in Lindsay Lohan, as it was the last decent thing she worked on before she unraveled.  It’s sort of sad in that respect.  She was so cute, so promising!  And then…)  This post is really about a ridiculous raincoat (Valentino, $755) that I found thanks to bloggerina Natalie Merrilyn (thanks, darlin!)

I’ll admit that the cold weather has stifled my fashion will this week.  I find myself rotating between the same two uber-thick nubby sweaters, jeans, and Tory Burch fur mukluks…pretty much every day.  And swaddled in a blanket while at home.  The other day, I realized that I was wearing five layers on top.  Five.  FIVE.  And I still felt cold.  Wah, 16 degrees on the thermom is no fun.  So today’s post is more of a “wishful thinking” type post.  I want to will myself into some sleek and sophisticated browns, tans, blacks, and navies — a nice transition from grubby winter gear.  How about this suede-pocket skirt ($45) with a white blouse ($110) and a cool girl hat (really want one of these to wear this season — $139):

Finish with the chicest platforms ever (B. Brian Atwood, $340 — even though platforms are definitely on their way out — just read last month’s VOGUE, which essentially served as an obituary to the trend.  They were really pushing the single-sole.  SHEESH, Vogue.  I get it.)  These Atwoods will hold their own however, and your daughters will find them back in fashion by the time they’re old enough to wear them.  Finish with a cool colorblocked cross-body (Rachel Roy, $59):

Now, ever since I saw Emma Morrison (fashion assistant at Vogue, featured on the EPIC series “5 Days, 5 Looks, 1 Girl” — if you don’t read this series…you must.  It will make you feel like you need to care more about your appearance, but in a good, inspirational way.  These ladies have got.it.going.on.  They have a story or sartorial logic behind each piece they wear.  Cannot say the same for my own closet, but we’re getting there.) wearing a paisley print dress to work, I knew I needed one.  It felt so unexpected, so fresh, and yet so timeless.  As soon as I saw this A.L.C. dress (on sale for $337), I knew I had to have it.  It’s conveniently/inconveniently (depending on how you look at it) gone on sale, and now I have quite the dilemma on my hands: to buy or not to buy.  I’d style with black tights, simple black booties ($69), and these amazing earrings (Lizzie Fortunato, $198)

For some reason I woke up yesterday wanting to wear a crisp, pristine, white button-down with some classic, dark-wash skinnies.  This was an unfortunate fashion revelation because I’m working in D.C. for the week, and my wardrobe lives in Chicago.  So instead, I put together this post outlining crisp separates for this heavy-sweater-weather.  I love this Proenza Schouler colorblocked number ($695) –

Wants of the Week

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Beauty Products, Denim, Fresh Combos, Gym Gear, Home Decor, Jewelry, Pastels, White on January 4, 2013 at 11:44 am

Aside from everything Elle Strauss wears, I’ve compiled quite the list of obsessions over the last week or so.  One of my resolutions this year (as with all of you, I’m imagining…) is to spend less, save more.  The following list is testing my dedication to that pledge.

COVET1This shirt ($59) is…unbelievable.  The print, the colors, the shape.  And the price!  At a reasonable $59, I’m struggling hard to keep my hand from my wallet.  I’d wear it with jeans and some suede navy pumps (Kate Spade, on sale for $238):

The only thing I’d add?  A confetti-gem necklace, which brings me to…

COVET2

This affordable, chic statement necklace ($85).  I’m obsessed with the mixed metal chains, and the colors make it easy to match with just about everything.  Or just a plain old white tee.

Screen Shot 2013-01-04 at 8.11.15 AM

I love the mash up of shapes and the asymmetrical clustering, too.  Tres, tres chic.

COVET3After a few years of lusting after the red sole (and no, I will never stop loving Louboutin), I’ve now been eying the classic, throwback Manolos from the days of Carrie Bradshaw.

I mean, is there anything at all more feminine than this bubble-gum pink BB Court ($645)?!

COVET4

I don’t know if it’s the influence of Ms. Elle Strauss, but today I leaned into my closet for a white lace top (Joie, on sale for $198), despite the frigid temps.  I’ll wear mine with either boyfriend jeans and a big tangly necklace or a black fur vest and my new burgundy coated J. Brand ($152).

COVET5While we’re on the topic of white, I know I mentioned awhile ago that I had my eye on a pair of navy blue foo dogs as a new accent piece for the home.  I am now convinced I need this cheeky white pair ($82 for set):

With the start of the new year, I re-stocked my medicine cabinet with new products.  One newcomer that I’m particularly excited about (it’s in the mail – I’ll let you know the results when it arrives!)?  Dr. Gross’ Alpha Beta glow pads ($18 for 10), which apparently exfoliate, prevent wrinkles, AND give you a tan.

I’m uber excited.  I’ll also be testing new mascara (Benefit, $23) and a new bronzer (Guerlain, $50).  Don’t you just love a batch of new beauty products (makeup bag shown below by One Truffle, $38)?!

This isn’t even my style, but I’ve been eying this deeply discounted Lanvin pouch ($148) amidst the dramatic after-Christmas sales.  I feel like it could be the kitschiest little pop of color/pattern for an otherwise staid, all-black-everything look.  Or maybe I’d pair it with a contrast patterned blouse in pinks and reds?  I don’t know, but I want it.

After Marlien Rentmeester mentioned her last week, I’ve spent way too much time ogling over Elle Strauss, senior Lucky fashion editor, and her impeccable style in her feature on Refinery 29.  UGH, I just die over her.  Too cool, to chic.  Damn.

elle7

Everything, I WANT IT ALL.  The key takeways here:

Lesson 1: Leather moto jackets are not scary.

I didn’t think this wardrobe staple was for me until I saw Elle style it with the lace dress above (by Lover).  Elle’s leather topper is by TopShop ($330), and it sent me on a wild tail spin into the search for the perfect leather jacket.  I actually preferred this faux-leather TopShop style ($116) to the one she wore for its quilted sleeve detailing.  (Ahmazing.  And you can’t beat that price!)  But then that led me to search elsewhere for other leather coats with quilting, and I fell head over heels for this collarless Catherine Malandrino find (on sale for $380).  Which would you pick?

LO

Of course, the bank-breaker would the Balenciaga moto jacket, which also features quilted detailing, and — to my knowledge — is no longer available.  See it styled on the chic peas below for a little convincing that you NEED a quilted leather jacket:

bal

bal3

Ugh, love.  Anyway, need one of those puppies.  But I need to pair it with a lace sheath ala Elle to cut down on its intensity.  The DVF Zarita ($325) is the perfect answer, although I’ll admit that this hella-inexpensive number for Dorothy Perkins ($44) in a-seasonal white caught my eye as well.  Pair with black tights and classic Sergio Rossi pumps ($575):

Screen Shot 2013-01-02 at 4.11.40 PM

The Chanel bag would be the dream come true, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  For more moderately priced options: the Rebecca Minkoff “Flirty” ($295) is pretty arresting with its on-point studs; alternately, this (also studded) crossbody ($128) would be a fun little closet addition, and it comes in a range of great colors, including a fab cheery red:

Lesson 2: Isabel Marant is the bomb.com.

After hearing Ms. Strauss wax poetic about her Isabel skirt + shirt combo that she’s worn “so many times it’s embarrassing” (we’ve all been there before…I’m sure Mr. Magpie will barf if I wear my new burgundy leather J. Brands one more time in the next week), I realized that it may be time to finally snag one of the many Isabel Marant pieces I covet every season but find a little out of my price range and/or challengingly chic with their Parisian street slouchiness.

elle4

I love Isabel Marant’s silhouettes — pin thin, tailored trousers/denim with wide-neck booties and blousey/slouchy tops (almost cartoonish in the proportions!) or urban hippie flared/ruffled minis with loose knit tops.  I just — who new that a flippy skirt could look so fresh?!  I may or may not be considering this embroidered skirt from her diffusion line, Etoile by Isabel Marant ($290) with an embroidered white blouse ($25 — alternately, go BIG label with this stunning lace/embroidered top from The Row, on sale for $580, or this affordable, demi-sheer find for only $44):

Screen Shot 2013-01-02 at 9.11.00 PM

Screen Shot 2013-01-02 at 9.07.45 PM
{P.S. if you like the printed/flouncy skirt look Elle was rocking rather than my adaptation above, check this Isabel style out, on sale for $462.}  Now, Elle finished the look with Isabel Marant “Dicker” booties in a sand color ($600), and I KNOW how popular that shoe style is, but I just can’t accept it.  I’m sorry.  I know a lot of my chicest friends rock them OUT, and I have to say that Elle made the look more fetching than ever, but I just…always want the heel to be a little higher.  And the shaft to be a little taller.  I don’t know, it’s not my silhouette.  So, I’d finish this look with a heeled, mid-calf bootskis (Sigerson Morrison, on sale for $297):

Cool cool cool in an urban cowboy-ette kind of way.  Especially finished with the Wang mini duffel (which also comes in rad neon colors this season! — $795):

Screen Shot 2013-01-02 at 10.00.19 PM

Lesson 3: No, really.  Clue yourself in to Isabel Marant.

She didn’t specifically mention the Isabel Marant “Lazio” wedge boot (on sale for $832) that the entire fashion world raved about, but it’s all I could think about after reading about her love of all things Isabel.  Get the look for less with this Madison Harding find ($275)

lohiLesson #4: Leopard continues to reign king.

I feel like we all might have thought leopard would be swept under the rug for a few seasons, but not so, selon Elle. Her cute leopard topper reminded me of Wren’s leopard coat, which Alexa Chung wore to rounds of applause a few seasons ago.  Unfortunately, that style is no longer available but — GASP — wait til you see what Wren replaced it with: an even chicer (in my opinion) colorblocked leopard-trim coat ($598):

wren

No but REALLY.  Please get in my closet.  {I also love this style from Emerson Fry for $425, but you can get the look for far less with this ASOS style, on sale for $61!}   I’d wear it over a chunky knit sweater ($379), leather jeans, and — while I know she’d finish it with those little elfin booties with suede fringe (according to Marlien, she swears by this Steve Madden pair), I’d swap those out for these AHMAZING Chloe boots (I want, I want — on sale for $599):

Elle swears by Nars’ lipstick pencil in the bright red Dragon Girl shade ($24).  I’m game.

Bring in the New

In Accessories, Black, Denim, Fresh Combos, Neutrals, Pop of Red, Shoes on January 2, 2013 at 11:45 am

HAPPY 2013!  The New Year brings with it the opportunity for reinvention, and I’ve been drawing a ton of inspiration from the street style looks captured by The Sartorialist, Stockholm Street Style, Tommy Ton, and more.  I feel like the vibe on the streets tends to center upon an urbane mix of the loose/undone (baggy sweaters, boyfriend jeans, slouchy knits) and the razor-edge/pin-thin (straight hair, sharp edges, structured bags).  The color palette is fresh if not basic: navy, red, camel, black.  I know I’m throwing a lot of generalities around here, but that’s the aesthetic that’s cropping up on my radar, and I’m cozying right on up to it.

Getaway

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Beauty Products, Brights!, Denim, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes on December 31, 2012 at 10:41 am

Preface: I know it’s NYE, and I am flat out not addressing it in the post below.  I began to conceptualize a post on glittery frocks but then thought — eh.  My chic peas will already have their outfits purchased/planned/in the bag/etc., so it’s a litttttle late to wax poetic over the newest duds on the rack.  Mr. Magpie and I have officially entered old person-dom and have decided to approach this NYE a little differently: we splurged on expensive champagne, caviar + blinis, lobster, and some oysters {and I’ll be making this deliciousness as a side, and went ahead and made a classic cheesecake yesterday for indulgent dessert}, and are staying in with old movies and party hats.  {That doesn’t mean I’m not getting dolled up.  I’ll be wearing this.}  Anyway — have a happy, safe New Year, whatever you’re doing!

*********************

The other night, Mr. Magpie casually asked me: “Where do you want to go on vacation this year?”  Eee!  I hadn’t even been thinking about a getaway, but now the seed has been planted.  (We shall see, though.  Between work trips, bachelorettes, bridal showers, and weddings, I have at least two trips a month from here until eternity, it feels like!  Staying home has become a welcome respite.)  Still.  I’m ready to pack mes valises (I’d love a set of Globetrotter suitcases — merci, merci!) and head somewhere tropical.

Faute de Mieux

In Accessories, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Fresh Combos, Gold, Home Decor, Pop of Red, Shoes on December 14, 2012 at 10:26 am

The French phrase “faute de mieux” is a linguistic gem.  Its very existence reflects both the center and circumference of a distinctively French attitude.  “Faute de mieux” translates literally as “for lack of something better” — and only the French would have a figure of speech of such dismissiveness and nonchalance, n’est-ce pas?  Us optimistic Americans just use the neutral “instead.”

But, today’s post is in fact aptly titled “faute de mieux” because I couldn’t quite corral my diversity of covets into a cohesive post.  That, and I thought the phrase sounded cooler than “Instead.”  So sometimes the French have it right — at least where aesthetics are concerned.

Alright, that was a lot of pedantry for a Friday morning, so let’s cut to the chase here.  Things to drool over:

1.  IllBeCa by Joy Gryson Church Street Envelope ($98).

UM, what.  Is this not the chicest thing since sliced brioche?  (????  Don’t know what that means.)  And how is it only $98?  I literally rubbed my eyes to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.  Did they drop off the first digit there?  So run, don’t walk, to snap up your own.  The shape and colors are of-the-moment in an I’m-a-fashion-editor kind of way.

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.34.09 PM Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.34.16 PM Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.34.22 PM

2.  Horn Tumblers ($75 for 2).

I’m a little late to the game here, but just started watching HBO’s GAME OF THRONES.  (Nerd, cough.)  And.  Obsessed.  Tell me I’m not alone here?  Kind of thinking I need some horn steins to guzzle mead out of while watching the rest of season 2.  Anyone else?

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.38.16 PM3.  Letter Bracelet ($185).

Shifting gears to something a little less embarrassing, I’m smitten with these lettered gold bracelets, part of a designer collab between Bauble Bar and Maya Brenner.  (Maya is better known for her state necklaces — if you have some state pride to brandish, check this series out!)  I kind of want one for both my first initial and Mr. Magpie’s.

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.40.37 PM Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.40.44 PMIf $185 is a little steep for this sort of accessory, check out these lettered necklaces from Gorjana ($50/pop).

4.  Script Blouse ($103).

And while we’re on the topic of the alphabet (a loose connection, at best), how funky-cool is this script-print blouse from Karl, on RIDIC sale for 70% off from Net-A-Porter?!

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.48.58 PM

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.49.08 PM

I can’t make out what it says on the shirt, but I hope it’s something snarky like “faute de mieux.”  (Ha.  It all comes full circle.)

5.  Two-Tone Clutch ($39).

I don’t know if you’re feeling clutched out after what feels like 34 consecutive seasons of non-stop clutching (?), but if you have room in your heart for these little guys ($39 but Gap has been running discounts for the past 2 weeks), the colors are really spot-on.

6.  Non-Seasonal Lust Item: Suno’s High Neck Patterned Dress ($595)

I know this is wretchedly inappropriate given that I’m excitedly awaiting for Christmas, but I saw this stunning dress from hot line SUNO NY (originally made famous by Kate Bosworth’s hippie chic look at Coachella a few years back, where she made quite a splash in a tie-dyed Suno number) and stopped dead in my tracks.  I need this.  End of story.

sunoThe color, the print, the neckline.  It’s just delicious perfection.  Sort of like a grown-up Lilly Pulitzer.

7.  Kaleidoscopic Print Sloafers ($155)

You may be exhausted with this trend as well (I’m sorta winding down on them myself), but the print on these puppies was too good not to showcase.  Love ‘em.  Imagine with #allblackeverything.

8.  Foo Dogs ($58 for set)

Shifting gears, I love these fun little ceramic foo dogs.  I would use them as book-ends or maybe would separate them and have them live in different parts of my house — as decor on a bookshelf, on a mantel, on a coffee table atop a stack of books, proudly displaying a couple of my necklaces in my dressing room, etc.  Great colors, don’t you think?  I’m torn between the deep blue and the pristine white.

Tell me these aren’t the snuggliest, cheeriest little thangs you ever laid eyes on.  I snagged the melon-and-cream striped one earlier this season, and am regretting it since they’re now so cheap — $24 plus 30% off.  Perfect for pairing with cozy pajama bottoms on Christmas day, or beneath a puffer vest with some boyfriend jeans and funky flats.

10.  Painted Birdcages ($182)

I supposed I’m drawing some serious influence from Asian accent pieces, because in addition to the foo dogs above, I’m also swooning over these brightly colored pagoda birdcages.  Love how fanciful they are.  I can see them in a little girl’s room, as a big accent piece in the corner of the room.

Big Slouch

In Accessories, Black, Denim, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Neutrals on December 4, 2012 at 12:07 pm

“Jennifer, Jennifer, well and able, get those elbows off the table.  This is not a riding stable, this is our family’s dining table.”  This refrain found its way into more mealtimes than I care to remember, along with my father’s less sing-song directive: “Don’t slouch.  Sit up straight.  Posture.”  In short, the word slouching has long been a negatively-tinged one in my lexicon — that is, until this season, when I’ve been sort of dying over the 80s-reborn, oversized, slouchy proportions on some of the separates that have found their way into my closet.  To begin with, I somewhat unthinkingly snapped up this roomy red-orange sweater from Gap ($54) to prepare for the wintry mix headed our way, and a) have gotten way more mileage than I expected out of it, and b) cannot wear it without someone stopping to ask me where I got it or commenting on its cheery color or cozy, oversized fit.  I wear mine (or the similar, designer label style below — $1000) rolled up at the sleeves to expose a striped tee beneath (I wear a classic stripe, but am dying over the color combinations of this $50 J. Crew sailor tee), with skinnies and easy cap-toe flats (on sale for $105):

There you have it.  The world’s easiest, most pulled together weekend look, especially when finished with a classic leather tote (bonus points for the monogram — $199).  I have to say that as I get older, I’m on the hunt more and more for a label-agnostic-looking bag.  I mean, I’ve LOVED every second of my Alexander Wang Emile (mine is in the yummy toffee color, now sold out) and, before that, a couple of Louis Vuitton bags, but, as I get older, I’m less and less interested in the bag as a status symbol itself and find myself coveting a bag that no one else has…or that at least is more difficult to source.  Well, let me add a few caveats to that: I will die and go to heaven if I get my paws on the Pashli while it’s still hella chic to own.  And the Celine Boston bag will forever haunt my life.

Anyway, the style above is along the lines of what I’m looking for.  I’m also very seriously considering this jujued up sweatshirt from J. Crew ($148) after seeing Marlien Rentmeester wax poetic about it on her fab blog, Le Catch (LOVE that joint — the shopping addicted unite!).  It’s the perfect slouchy look for right now — a little bit dressed up, and a lot dressed down.  I’d wear it with distressed, lighter-wash jeans and some wedge booties (Plomo, $395)

The shoes are very Isabel Marant, at about a third of the price.  Parisian street chic.  I’d finish with a luxe bag ($895) — the Pashli, to be exact –

Or, how about this nubby sweater (love its roomy size and the cool zipper detailing — $84) with black wool pants ($118), some metallic-flecked pointy toe flats (Loeffler Randall, $250), and Ray-Bans ($125):

Finish with an uber-chic bag (YSL, $2,595) and an unexpectedly “rough and tumbly” scarf ($84 — GREAT textural contrast):

Very Sofia Coppola.  Finally, one slouchy look on my list — a classic denim jacket ($118) with a big ol necklace ($228), a striped tee, some roomy-fit olive green trousers ($59), and a classic pair of neutral flats (Lanvin, $495):

Finish with one of those bananas Sophie Hulme totes:

And, one accent piece that I just added to my own wardrobe very much in this slouchy style vein?  This fab star scarf ($35 — 30% off today online!), which I’m going to rock with a denim button down and black skinnies for a slick casual look.

LOVE.  Who’s slouching now?

Do you follow me on  Pinterest?  If you do, you’ll have noticed a slight grush (girl + crush) on Russian fashion plate Miroslava Duma.  She’s wildly eclectic and, despite her diminutive size, pulls off patterns and haute shapes with ease.  Check out her avant garde fashion blog, Buro 24/7 — LOTS of eye candy.

Also, I love her hair.  Kind of makes me want a slick, even-length bob.  But I think you need her bananas bone structure to pull it off with style.  Anyway, I’ve been trying to figure out what makes Miro tick in the fashion sense, but it’s a challenge — the sampling of looks above demonstrates her versatility: from ladylike cape and croc purse to playful floral jumper, and you should see some of her even wilder creations.  But I am going to put together some Mira-esque looks for my own personal enjoyment…first, we gotta begin with something bold, textured, and interestingly shaped: a pink cocoon coat (Gianluca Capannolo, $1,489) will do the trick.  She’d wear it with a huge necklace (Shourouk, $1,100 — and PSST: I received a special coupon code from the kind folks at Charm + Chain for 25% off EVERYTHING now through December 14th with code: CC25OFF!  Get shopping!):

Finish with some colorblocked heels (Brian Atwood, $915)

Another look very much up her alley?  This voluminous sweater-top-dress ($36) with an oversized medallion necklace ($635), a pair of lighter-washed, slightly-distressed jeans, and some funky heels (on SUPER sale for $88):

Finish with the McQueen Demanta clutch ($850) — you need something big and oversized to finish the look.

I can also very much see her in this Proenza Schouler number (loving the quilted collar detail — $1,150), with a statement necklace ($367) worn under the collar ($black tights and some ankle-breaking booties (Alaia, $1,878):

I can also envision her in this darling Marni dress ($1,000) with this BANANAS leopard necklace (I just MUST own it — $138):

A slam dunk with these platformed velvet and satin tootsies (Tory Burch, $425) with this limited edition DVF “sun circle clutch” (a piece of art — $995):

In closing, for our gifting guru item of the day…

…and though it’s a tad above our $50 goal, how Miroslava Duma is this Shourouk-esque necklace ($78)?!  Imagine it tucked neatly under the collar of a printed dress.  Ba.na.nas.

A Piece of (Art-)Work

In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Gifts!, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes on November 14, 2012 at 11:17 am

When I think back on some of my very favorite memories, so many of them have taken place in the presence of great art: in the Guggenheim Museum in Venice while studying abroad and feeling very independent for the first time in my life (I had chosen to split off from my traveling buddy to explore Venice on my own, and spent a good half-day ogling over the visual splendor housed in that villa on the channel); in Paris at Musee Marmottan with my parents, soaking up every last minute of their indulgent kindness before heading off to college for the first time; at the Frick in New York with my baby sister just after she’d moved up there and we were feeling very lucky to have a day of sisterhood; at the Phillips in D.C., where I interned for a summer and managed to smuggle some friends into a boozy after-hours event and wound up having the time of my life.  Today, I’m hoping to pay some modest homage to this trend by featuring some of the artful pieces I’ve seen cropping up all over the place — hand-painted items; brush-stroke prints; unique, artisanal patterns.

Let’s begin high-end, with this stunning horse pattern shirt ($836), which would look bananas with these expensive-looking drops ($100!), a wool mini (on sale for $125), and black tights:

Finish with these city slicker cap-toed booties (Alice and Olivia, $405) and a pebbled leather clutch (Clare Vivier, $157):

Also a huge fan of this funky artful printed blouse ($98), paired with this ginormous deco pendant (obsessed with this affordable find — Rachel Roy, $65).  This look would be fab with a simple pair of skinnies, but why not juju things up with some red Minnies ($70) and some simple black flats ($80)?

I’d finish with this textured “bubble” clutch (Phillip Lim, $325):

For something even bolder, check out this painted leather dress ($250), which reminds me, for some reason, of part of a Frida Kahlo painting.  Totally something fashion-plate Miroslava Duma would wear.  Finish with an emerald-esque necklace ($575 — OR check out J. Crew’s jewelry collection, which features lots of this color, as with this stunning necklace):

You’ll need to pair this look with the highest — and thus most haute couture — heels you can muster, like these Charlotte Olympias, which defy all logic ($895) and a artful clutch ($650):

As an aside, this snakeskin Balenciaga bag ($3,350) is mesmerizing and Jackson Pollack-esque…a true work of art!

Shifting gears/color-palettes, love the idea of an artfully-printed blouse (DVF, on super sale for $118) with this ah-mazing piece of horn jewelery ($385), skinnies, and almond snakeskin flats ($250):

Perfect for a day of shopping/art-browsing!  Could go well with this stunning clutch (love the clasp! — $850) in blue if you’re transitioning to evening-wear, but the black is so versatile…

Also liking the idea of pairing this brush-stroke print scarf ($185) with a pleated dress ($143)

Finish with these cheeky heels ($945)

This funky clutch (Morgan Parish, $220) might be the perfect cap to the look, if you’re not too afraid of matchy-matchy…otherwise, go with a simple black clutch.

Speaking of Morgan Parish, one of her other goodies makes the “Gifting Guru” corner today…

How darling are these funky little key-rings ($30)?!  A perfect stocking stuffer or gift for a co-worker, cousin, etc:

The Miranda Rights

In Accessories, Black, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Gold, Shoes, Winter Weather on November 12, 2012 at 11:54 am

Miranda Kerr has been all over my Pinterest feed for the past year or so — her sophisticated, streamlined fashion sense (featuring lots of leather) has caught my attention as well.

First, begin with a color-blocked blouse ($396) and pair with coated skinnies ($210) and some patterned Choos ($950)

The pointy toe is key to getting the look right.  Cap it all off with the phenomenal Alexander Wang quilted pelican ($945):

Other looks?  A color-blocked sweater from Proenza Schouler ($1,895 — love the zipper detailing on the shoulder) with coated maroon skinnies ($360) and some cap-toed heels ($275):

Perfect with a roomy black tote in a simple, structured shape ($99):

I’m also envisioning this patched sweater ($129) with a nude/rose scarf (Chan Luu, $195), skinnies, and booties (B Brian Atwood, $460 — but get the look for less with these):

Perfection with the Alexander Wang Prisma ($685) –

Or, how about a hand-painted striped tee ($66) with some leather shorts (DVF, $475) –

Perfect with classic patent pumps from Louboutin ($625) and the All Saints Rixey tote ($295)

Finally, I can totally envision Miranda rocking this leather-trimmed sweatshirt-material dress (comfy and chic — $350) –

– finished with these affordable cap-toed, snakeskin pumps ($69) and the Lim 31 Hour Bag ($750):

And now — I know this is above the $50 limit we discussed earlier — but for today’s gifting guru…

…these darling fur cuffs ($98), which come in a range of colors.  I loveeeee these puppies, and can imagine Miranda rocking them in her signature mulled wine/burgundy:

Happy Monday!

Glass of Merlot

In Accessories, Fresh Combos, Fur, Gifts!, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes, Winter Weather on November 5, 2012 at 10:02 am

Purple-red merlot has been a hot color this season.  I am digging it.  It plays well with camel, heather gray, black, and all things fur.  Pour votre consideration, regardez:

Let’s get the look, shall we?  First up: I love love love this fur vest ($198) in “mulled wine” — perfect over a cozy striped sweater ($89) paired with jeans and croc flats (French Sole, $181):

Perfect with the new J. Crew Biennial colorblocked tote ($368):

Or, how about a classic trench ($298) with some enorma-studs ($125), a fetching pair of burgundy-colored booties ($495), and this Victoria Beckham tote (ridiculous…$2,100)?

And how classy would you look wearing a monochromatic camel look — fur collar (Maison Martin Margiela, $1800), sweater (Gucci, $1,150), trousers (MaxMara, $612):

Finish with all burgundy accent pieces, like these Miu Miu pumps ($690) and the Phillip Lim Pashli ($895):

And maybe this studded leather wrap bracelet (Fallon, $150)?

Also living for this full skirt ($360) and a white blouse with gold chain detailing ($260) — with earrings ($45) to match:

Lovely with coordinated peep-toes ($650) and this to die Pucci clutch ($1,740):

And, of course, a chunky link bracelet ($88), and maybe this foo dog bracelet to boot ($98):

Perhaps topped off with this to DIE fur coat ($2,495):

Or, how about pairing a simple maroon crewneck sweater ($80) with this origami-pleated skirt in heather gray (Phillip Lim, $425) and a bold necklace (Lulu Frost, $278)?

Ah-mazing with these studdied t-strap tootsies (swoon! — $185) AND the iconic oversized Valentino Rockstud clutch ($1000):

Thoughts?  Are you into it?!  PS — check out La Mer Collection’s capsule series with TARGET!  All of these wrap watches are only $39!  WHAT.  Great gift as the holidays approach, n’est-ce pas?  My favorite remains the classic brown leather with gold hardware, but the white with rose-gold is calling my name…!

Descouvertes

In Accessories, Fresh Combos, Fur, Home Decor, Ikat, Jewelry, Leopard, Polka Dot, Pop of Red, Shoes, Work Wear on October 10, 2012 at 10:48 am

I’m a little scattered today — my little sis arrives tomorrow, one of Mr. Magpie’s best buds arrives on Friday, and I’m off to Vancouver for work on Monday.  Basically, it’s going to be the greatest week ever.  Family, friends, and a new city to explore.  Woo woo!  Accordingly, the post I’d planned to run with today is still floating around in mid-complete territory, so I’ll instead share some recent discoveries (decouvertes, en francais) that I’m loving.

1.  Auden Design Jewelry

I’m smitten with this line — just the right amount of edge and sparkle, and the weight feels just perfect for the colder weather.  (Earrings — $328; pendant necklace — $388; spike necklace — $388):

Love love.  I would wear that last style with the boucle peplum blouse ($50) I just snagged, as I mentioned here.  Or maybe I’d get it in the more wearable crystal…hmm.  Food for thought!

2.  Zara Home

Zara just unveiled a new home goods section!  Though I thought most of their goodies were overpriced for what they were, I’m in love with this lucite folding table ($189), which I’d top with a great lamp ($375), some pretty books ($75 for set from Assouline), my favorite candle ($60), and an ikat bowl (get the look with this set from C. Wonder):

3.  Red Pants

I know I bragged about my amazing score of a find at Gap — these cropped red wool trousers for only $49! — BUT now I’m kind of in love with these full-length, wider-leg trousers ($240) for an elegant work look, paired with a dotted silk blouse ($128 — or get the look with this Michael Kors blouse), some sparkle ($140, Loren Hope) and the perfect pointed-toe pump (on sale for $249):

Dreamy with the Reed Krakoff Atlantique bag ($1,495).  Important to keep the rest of your accents toned down when you’re wearing such bold pantalons!

4.  Fur Scarf  ($88)

I’ve already requested this under the tree this Christmas, but I had to share this Adrienne Landau style, currently on super sale (down from $295!) at Saks!

So glam with a pair of Valentino Rockstud gloves (dream.on — $400) and enorma-shades (Choo makes shades now?! — $295):

5. Sophie Hulme Bag

Um, this bag by newcomer Sophie Hulme ($870) is amazing.  Enough said.

6.  Budget Buy: Leopard Dress

Love this inexpensive leopard dress ($28) — perfect with tights, booties, and a great necklace.

7.  Patterned Pouches

Love this cute set of cosmetic/storage pouches ($56) from DesignDarling:

8.  Sock It

Socks are usually a necessary evil, so anytime I find a fun little pair that I can layer beneath boots in the winter, I’m all for it.  A fun little surprise.  And these funky leopard print pairs ($8) from Gap seal the deal.

What are y’all coveting today?

Drama.

In Accessories, Black, Bombshell, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Fur, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Winter Weather on October 1, 2012 at 10:59 am

If you follow me on Pinterest, you’ll know that I have lately been drawn to lots of darkly chic, dramatic looks — black with glossy gold; architectural separates; layers of contrasting texture (fur, feather, leather, suede, studs!).

So rich and glamorous for fall.  Imagine a black cape from Gucci (wow. — $1,945 — or get the look for a little less here for $395) with glossy gold earrings ($130), black skinnies and some suede booties ($279):

Perfect with a leopard cross-body ($745), a leather cuff ($165), and some black quilted gloves ($148):

Or, how about a black leather skirt ($485) with a baroque style necklace ($156) and nude blouse ($74)?

Finish with fierce patterned flats ($89) and a quilted/feathered clutch ($200):

And how to die is this leather-and-wool blend jumper dress from Rebecca Taylor ($650), with a Fallon necklace ($325)?

Finish with some cap-toed heels ($650) and a pebbled leather clutch ($979) from Proenza Schouler:

For something a bit more casual, consider this peplum top ($20) with a serious statement necklace ($678), some black skinnies, and those TDF Valentino studded heels ($1,145):

Add a calf-hair bag ($128) and you’re set.

Finally, a quad of goodies that can help you get the look — Kate Spade Eddie flat ($228), Anya Hindmarch keyfob ($125), studded and pearled cuff ($225), and Alexander Wang pouch ($175).

Happy Monday!

Crop Trou

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes, Work Wear on September 24, 2012 at 11:14 am

This past Friday, I broke new fashion territory for myself.

Drumroll, please.

I decided that I would wear something other than a dress or skinny jeans out for a night on the town.  I wore a pair of wool-blend ankle-cropped tomato red pantalones.  And I have to say — I’ve never drawn more looks from the gentlemen.  Mr. Magpie can attest to this; at one point, he said, “I feel like you’re getting checked out…a lot.”  This is slightly perplexing to me, as I personally felt that the ladies would appreciate the look more (and let’s be honest, we all dress for women anyway), and I wondered whether Mr. M would think I was entering “old woman territory.”  Apparently not.  Let me recreate the look for you: a flashy bronze necklace ($198); camel sweater ($79); red pants ($79 — though I got mine from Gap of all places and they fit me like a velvet glove); my favorite camel suede Declic Louboutins (mine are closed toe and a hair taller than the ones shown below, but you can get a similiar look for less here):

I finished it off with my Chanel and a patterned scarf heavily featuring camel ($205):

This has really led me to rethink life.  And by life, I mean the inappropriate emphasis on denim in my evening-hour wardrobe.  It’s time to switch thangs up. Micaela L., I get where you were going with coveting a pair of leather pantalons.  I ordered and returned this pair of coated J. Brand’s last year — leather with training wheels, essentially — but I couldn’t find the appropriate occasion to wear them, even though I thought they would look so.chic. with a chunky knit and some killa heels…anyway, I’m mega into non-denim bottoms this season, especially in the cropped style.  I need. this pair of hunter green Minnies ($89), which I’d wear with a big necklace ($188),  patterned ($298) or nude blouse, cap-toed heels (aren’t these a bargain?!? — $80 — love.)

I’d finish with a classic leather bag, like this stunning D&G score ($2,345):

If these colors scare you, never fear.  Black is not far away.  Try a pair of black cropped trous (Acne, $320) with a patterned bow-front blouse (Marc Jacobs, $875), some glitzy enorma-studs ($35), and some pointed-toe heels ($168):

If you’re into the bow blouse like I am this season, check out these less expensive styles here, here, and here.  The latter one I’m particularly ecstatic about.  With jeans?!  C’mon.  I’d wear this with the Philip Lim Pashli ($895) in the pebbled leather.  Swoon.

This look needs to be worn with a swipe of hot pink lipstick (YSL’s Soft Fuchsia is lovely — $32):

Or, how about this navy-printed blouse from Equipment ($230) with a bold beaded necklace ($36)), some DVF trousers ($435), and THE PERFECT FALL HEEL (O.M.G. — Manolo Blahnik $645 — love how the Carrie Bradshaw classic has come sling-shotting back into vogue):

I’d modestly mix prints by adding this dove shawl ($195), which goes perfectly with the palette and adds a little warmth and contrast, and would round the outfit out with this Proenza Schouler cross-body ($1,950):

Side note — discoveries of the weekend: this snow leopard fur scarf from Rachel Zoe ($190) which I MUST.OWN within the next 24 hours, and this stealerooskidoodledoo of a dress ($25), which I almost bought in multiple colors, but that just seemed weird.  No one wants to be seen wearing the same dress in two colors.  I was torn between the gray/orange and red/navy, but ended up opting for the gray/orange because it was more unusual and it goes with a pair of ridonculous Anya Hindmarch platforms I own (patent gray, orange, and white…trust me, they’re beautiful).

HAPPY MONDAY!

OH.  And I’ve been DYING over all of the amazing responses I’ve received to my “Getting to Know You” post from last week!  Please share your thoughts!  I’ll pick a “winner” tomorrow!

Where Have You Been All My Li-i-i-i-i-fe

In Accessories, Denim, Fresh Combos, Home Decor, Intimates, Magpie Nest on September 19, 2012 at 11:27 am

Hi.

I’m the worst blogger ever.

And I even attended a blogger event earlier this month and felt all high on my horse and excited to get back into the blogging groove, and yet…time slips by, work piles up, the leaves turn, and suddenly I’m in American Mattress on a Sunday, testing out Sensa iComfort beds and wondering where the past month has gone and why I haven’t blogged.  (The mattress shopping is a random, but true, incident, and it really made me feel Old, in the capital “O” sort of way, to be testing out beds with Mr. Magpie and telling the kind, slightly pushy salesman that we were “trading up” for a bigger bed and foisting our older one into the guest room.  Where have you gone, 20s?  I can’t say I’m beleaguered by the impending big 3-0 — still two years away, but there in the ether, nonetheless — but moments like this, where I am laying in a display bed talking about firm vs soft mattresses and the pros and cons of the double wrapped metal coil supporting me, I find myself blanking out a bit and wondering where the college days of worrying about who to take to formal and how I can smuggle a dubious mixture of vodka and crystal light into Scott Stadium have gone.  I suppose fall is always a keen source of nostalgia for me — the biting kind.  I love fall because I am a nerd at heart and I miss school and the promise of a new school year, but also because I always think of Charlottesville in the fall, and if you’ve ever been to Charlottesville in the fall, you know why it’s enough to make a grown woman buckle at the knees.  There’s just something about its crispness, the richness of its color and smell, its quietude.

And so, that’s where I’m living today — in a sleepy, meandering sort of nostalgia for falls in Charlottesville.  Well, one foot is in nostalgia.  The other is planted firmly in regret for neglecting you, my lovely readers, for so long.  I feel like i have lots to say, too.

The first thing — and gird your loins, ladies, because this is going to throw you for a loop — I think I might be ready to buy a pair of bootcuts.  Or even flares.  Or — gasp — bell-bottoms?!  Yes.  It’s true.  And before you judge me, please examine exhibits A, B, and C:

The secret to success?  The J. Brand Lovestory style ($218), which all three of the ladies above are sporting.  OK, phew.  Got that out there.  They just look so fresh and new after 23 seasons of skinny, skinny, and skinnier jeans.  So there’s that.  I’ve had mine chilling out in my Shopbop shopping cart for like 23 days, and I keep wondering what will push me over the edge.  The fall weather is certainly helping me move towards purchase.  I’d wear mine with a cute fall outfit — I like this hen sweater for its sweet kitsch ($95) and these geek-chic specs from Warby Parker ($95):

And some preppy rugby striped flats ($135):

Ooh.la.la.  Now, as fall descends and the nights get a little cooler and cozier, I’ve been wanting to expand my sleepwear collection.  I recently invested in a monogrammed set from J. Crizzle ($85) that will keep me looking chic at night:

I’m also loving all of the cheeky prints from Marigot Collection ($120 for pajama set):

However, my absolute favorite loungewear?  My monogrammed “his is hers” oversized oxford from Claridge and King ($108):

I took this little snapski of my own, which I had embroidered in coral (hello, UVA).

And while we’re on the subject of Instagram (aka my best friend, much to the chagrin of Mr. Magpie), let me just take you on a quick tour of the last few (busy) weeks of my life, beginning with an engagement party for my little sis and her soon-to-be hubs.  My other sister and I put together a silhouette themed affair, which turned out super cute.  I got all of the supplies (poster below, stickers on napkins, and a garland) from LePapierStudio.  I just sent over photos of the happy couple in profile and she handled the rest!  I also bought lots of party goods (napkins and the BEST part — mini spoons and mini cups for scoops of my sister’s favorite ice cream, a peppermint that is house-made at our family’s country club) from The TomKat Studio.

P.S. — The darling fabric above is from Cotton Revival.  It cost a pretty penny but looked SO sweet on the table.  And then.  There was the trip to The Big Apple, which was epic.  We stayed out until 5 am one morning — woah.  I felt like a serious party-girl.  And then it took me like a month to recover from the lack of sleep.  Old Bones over here.

My sister’s darling boyfriend and I meandered through the Upper East Side together for the majority of Saturday since my baby sis had to go into work.  She works in the fashion industry, and things were cray cray in anticipation of fashion week — we missed her, but we had quite the Day of Adventure.  We wandered through Central Park, as evidenced above, hit up the Whitney (very cool exhibition was running while we were there, which has since been closed).  We went into a bajillion and one stores (he may be the only man I’ve ever met who is patient in this situation), and he let me drool over the fine bags in VBH.  (If you visit NY, you must stop into their store — it was breathtaking.  And the bags are ridiculous.  You can buy them online here as well.)

We also stood in line at La Duree (the esteemed France-based macaron shop) in the hopes of procuring a “treat” for my little sis, who was mega-bummed that she was missing out on our day of fun.  I have mixed feelings about this.  On the one hand, happy to wait in line for something that would bring a smile to my sister’s face.  On the other hand, I always snicker at the complacent tourists waiting in line at Georgetown Cupcake back in D.C., and…yet, there I was.  Doing the same thing.  Dumb.

It was also likely an unnecessary indulgence since the entire weekend was filled with treats, including Dylan’s Candy Bar:

And some authentic NY pastrami:

And many, many plates of charcuterie (a staple in my sister and her boyfriend’s lives — I think we had one a day while we were there.  They often pair their meats and cheeses with honey or fruit jam, which was delish):

Yum.  Speaking of food, back home in Chi-town, I’ve been really enjoying cooking lately…

Oh, joy.  OK, and now that I’ve sufficiently made myself voraciously hungry, I’ll close with my favorite recent addition to the Magpie Nest: this amazing dog painting that Mr. Magpie and I found.  I ADORE his gruff little face and then the fact that he has a little ball at his paw.  The contrast is brilliant, and he always makes me smile.

Alright, so that’s what’s been up with me.  What’s new with YOU?

Come and Go

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Glitter, Jewelry, Nautical, Shoes on August 21, 2012 at 9:41 am

I know that neon will eventually lose its effervescence on the fashion scene — it’s the textbook flash-in-the-pan trend, and it’s already dwindling.  (Don’t fret — your mini magpies will one day l.o.v.e. your neon Cambridge Satchel when it comes back into vogue in another decade or two.)  I already see it being phased out in favor of richer, more royal hues for fall.  And yet.  There are still some pieces that flag my attention and make me sit up straight, happy that we’ve been enjoying this warm embrace of color.  I, for one, would still happily sport this citrine-and-nude concoction from Mason by Michelle ($530) –

It’d look pret-ty fantastic with a glitzy necklace ($138) –

– and some serious shoes: behold the holy grail, ladies.  5.5″ inches of sparkly Charlotte Olympia perfection ($975).  Swoon.

Alternately, how fun is this affordable glam slam of a necklace ($58!)?!  I like it with a minimalist white blouse ($188), white skinnies (not for long!  Labor Day is just around the bend…), and some patent sandals ($98):

Perfection with this tasseled clutch from Blair Ritchey ($85), which would easily make the transition to your fall wardrobe:

Other affordable neon necklace options?  One of these collar necklaces from T+J Designs ($42 apiece) –

Alternately, check out the goodies at Elm Elm or Love Obsessed on Etsy — both shops are brimming with bold baubles that you’ll flip over.  Or, this rip-off of the House of Harlow station necklace, available for only $39 (boo ya):

Or, go nautical/preppy with the neon look by sporting this rugby stripe tunic ($198) from Sail to Sable over a white bikini ($215) –

– and of course a beachy tote (LOVE Dermond Peterson’s designs!!! –must buy all of his prints!!! — $115) and some gold sandals ($44):

For in-home decorating, go big with this lovely armchair from Stella Dallas (oh, how I love faux bamboo…$750):

To die accented with one of these fun little leopard lumbars ($165):

Or, accent a side table with one of these neon-hued foo dog lamps ($535 for pair):

Amazing, eh?!  Finally, keep the look relatively low-key by reserving the neons for small pops in the kitchen.  Consider these wooden spoons from Nicole Porter Design ($25 for set of 6), or these painted wooden pinch bowls from Wind and Willow Home ($21 for set of 2):

Finally, this set of salad servers ($33).  Too good.  (Or pick from one of the other shades below.)

Anyone else still on board with this, or am I the last woman standing?!  P.S. My apologies for yesterday’s truly A.D.D post.  I was really a little scattered yesterday…

Black, White, and Chic All Over

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Denim, Fresh Combos, Home Decor, Ikat, Jewelry, Leopard, Shoes, White on August 17, 2012 at 9:34 am

Every time I see a chic pea in clean black-and-white, I think, “I must emulate that look ASAP.” Some eye-candy:

SO sophisticated, SO pulled together.  Such cool restraint.  I’m determined to get the look with a couple of additions to the old wardrobe.  First thing on my lust-list?  This Pierre Hardy tote ($875).  Yes, a bit of a rip-off of Goyard, but hella cool all the same.

Pretty rad paired with simple black skinnies and some black accents, like these Gap sloafers, which I just snagged earlier this week (love the crest! — $39, plus 25% off today! — or if you’re a label luster, grab a pair of covetable Stubbs + Woottons) and the classic House of Harlow station necklace ($75 — own it, love it):

A spritz of Chanel’s beautifully packaged new fragrance, Chanel Noir (released TODAY! and available here) would be ideal:

Some simple gold-trimmed shades ($230) are the perfect street chic addition, and would look PRETTY amazing displayed in the home beneath this adorable sunglass print from SugarPaper ($40):

Very cool with a clean-looking, collarless/buttonless blouse ($115) and some printed pantalons ($88).  I like this look with a heavy piece of jewelry atop — this $825 Shourouk necklace is beyond:

Then, all you’d need is a pair of simple black flats ($56) and a simple black bag (loooove this Reed Krakoff style — $590):

Other items I love?  This affordable, juged up tank ($32) with black skinnies:

Perhaps this fun and affordable dalmatian print clutch ($50) and these simple black sandals (on sale for $35) would round it out nicely!?

For home, how amazing is this Katie Maennle chair ($1,650)?!

If a chair isn’t in the cards, just add some printed pillows ($50 each) or this lettered pillow (a steal at $28 from Etsy storefront Comfy Heaven Pillows!)

I’m also loving (of course) the packaging of a Diptyque candle ($60)…

And P.S. — this graphic alphabet/dog print from Weavers of South Sea is right up my alley ($19):

Happy Friday, y’all!  Have a great weekend!  Lovesies!

Falling into Place

In Accessories, Dream Wear, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Neutrals, Shoes, Winter Weather on August 15, 2012 at 9:40 am

I always get “frost-bite” this time of year — that hankering for colder weather, the smell of autumn, and all of the fun holidays fall brings with it.  (Mr. Magpie and I have a dear set of friends who have celebrated “Octoberfest” with us for several years in a row — we carve pumpkins, down spiked cider and brewskis, watch scary movies, and eat homemade pretzels and schnitzel.  It is the best.  I just can’t imagine fall in Chicago without them — it’s sort of heartbreaking…miss you, B + M!)  To stave off the homesickness, let’s focus our energy on something positive, i.e., the amazing fall wardrobe I have planned for myself.  (Sorry, Mr. Magpie.  You might want to avert your eyes at the financial catastrophe this blog post might yield.)  The strangest thing has happened as I’ve been filling e-shopping carts with goodies for the cooler climes — I’ve been gravitating towards forest green.  Now this is a strange moment.  I normally turn up my nose at any dark, “burnt,” colors — no rust, browns, maroons for me.  And now — forest green?!  It just feels right, y’all.  I mean — what can be wrong about this Vanessa Bruno capelet ($1,090)?!  So yummy and refined.

A slam dunk with other fall must-haves, like this darling brown leather watch from Kate Spade ($215) and this chunky link bracelet (slightly menswear-inspired — me likey — $78):

And this signet ring ($98 and up depending on metal) finishes the look with panache:

Other top picks?!  This unbelievable statement necklace from Beth Lauren ($132),  these Croc-effect burgundy loafers ($56), and this Phillip Lim clutch ($427):

This would all look spectacular paired with a chunky Peter Jensen waffle knit sweater ($295)

A scarf with an edge (this McQueen puppy — $445 –  just never goes out of style) adds the perfect slouchiness to the look:

Now, the ultimate closet addition would be this Marni dress ($1,070), which I’d wear every day of the week and twice on Tuesday.  I just love it.  Love the frilly sleeves, the print, the length.  It is the perfect transitional item.  And it would look oh-so-fetching with these Beth Lauren drops ($132):

I’d wear it with nude flats (these are perfection) and then with boots (love the nude color of these Loeffler Randalls — $695)…and would, in a dream world, finish with the Reed Krakoff Atlantique bag ($1,995):

Might be perfection with this Rachel Zoe pendant ($350 — loving her entire new collection) –

– AND these sloafers will definitely make their way into my closet at only $39!  I think I’ll snag the denim or black ones, though…

Finally, ending on a high note — OMG.  The YSL Cabas bag ($2,150).  TO.DIE.

EEEEP.  Fall!

Clearing Things Up

In Accessories, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Gifts!, Home Decor, Ikat, White on August 13, 2012 at 12:46 pm

Lucite.  As you may have gathered from my post last Friday, I’m sorta smitten with it.  (I think it’s a requirement of the consummate bloggerina — must own a lucite chair, write on a Macbook, and prominently display well-styled trays in all rooms of the house.)

Lucite, lucite, and more lucite.   Love, love, love.  Items currently living on my lucite lust list (how’s that for alliteration?)?  This pair of vintage lamps (homigod — imagine one at either end of a pristine white desk, bureau, or dresser) from Lobel Modern (no price listed…aka, terrifying):

Or, juge up your surfaces with a well-decorated tray ($29 for high-gloss white; $39 for acrylic):

Perhaps a colorful bowl or two displaying trinkets / candies ($48 for set of 4):

Or maybe a monogrammed plate ($38) with some baubles on top?

I’ve also been cooing over a pair of Staffordshire dog statuettes, and think one of these would make an excellent addition to any well-styled tableau ($160 for pair):

These trays would of course look equally fabulous atop a gold bar cart ($295), especially when arranged around one or several of these glass cloches ($50 and up):

Or, imagine this x-based side table ($250) next to your bed with a fresh bouquet of flowers and a happy-hued lamp ($166):

What a happy treat in the a.m.!  I have to add that my dream would be to further accent this room with this ridiculously delish daybed ($1,800).  I know that Mr. Magpie is wincing uncomfortably at the thought of this puppy living in our house, but…a girl can dream.  And I’d further girlify with this kiss print by the talented Sara Singh ($200):

No but really?!  Is it real?!  I love.  Other add-ons to this dream room?  A lucite trash bin ($19), naturally.

And a trio of acrylic/lucite desk accessories — a box full of mini quip cards ($28 for set of 100), a tape dispenser ($12), and a stapler ($18).

Of course, the lucite trend needn’t be just for home.  Consider a crossover trend in your wardrobe.  I love, for example, this Vanessa Mooney necklace ($100), especially layered with neon or sparkley baubles:

To my mind, the necklace above goes hand in hand with these edgy Jeffrey Campbell sloafers ($170), which are all the rage this season:

Alternately, any of the lovely baubles below…perhaps a long crystal pendant from Dara Ettinger ($253), a sparkly bangle or two from Alexis Bittar (did you know Alexis is a man?! — $255), or a casual watch ($60)?

…or maybe a pair of acetate sunnies by The Row ($445)?  If you can’t fathom dropping nearly $500 on a pair of clear shades, get the look for far, far less with this $32 TopShop pair.

Finally, one of my favorite bloglets, A Piece of Toast, ran an interesting post on the blogger-chic trend of clear clutches and recommended this affordable Minusey style ($78) for those of you wishing to get the look for less.

I like the idea…but would much prefer the good ol Phillip Lim Pashli ($650) in the clear fabrication.  TO DIE.  I know I’ve featured the Pashli in every possible size, color, and formulation over the past week or so…but it’s really that good.  I must own one.

Any must-haves from this post?!  Tell me what’s tickling your fancy…and have a great week, dolls!

New Beginnings

In Accessories, Champagne!, Fresh Combos, Leopard, Shoes on August 6, 2012 at 11:06 am

HELLO, MAGPIES!  I’ve missed you something awful.

No, I am not pregnant (received lots of queries on this front), and yes — I am alive and well.  Thanks to all of you for your sweet notes of inquiry and concern!

The big news is that Mr. Magpie decided to move on from his entrepreneurial endeavors, landed a seriously awesome new job (so happy for him!), and moved us across the country (well, half-way or third-way across anyhow)!  Yes, this little Magpie is now a Chicagoan!  And I dig it so far.  We live in a lovely neighborhood in Lincoln Park, and I am happy as a clam (with Louboutins on…what?).  Shopping galore, and everything within walking distance (or if not — a short El ride away).  Hello, big city!  I feel as though we’re going to be fast friends.

In retrospect, it seems rather dramatic that a move would require a month-long sabbatical from this little bloglet, but the unexpected magnitude of it all caught me a little off guard.  Endless nights of packing (yielding 90 boxes + furniture…sick), emotional goodbyes to our families and friends, a long car ride (filled with lots of annoying, not fun, adventures, including a broken-down car; a terrible set of storms that led to 6″ of “ponding water” in the highway; and Mr. Magpie choking on some trail mix…while driving 60 MPH…no bueno), and the overall stress and frustration of moving in general.  We’re excited to be embarking on this new adventure and this amazing new city, but my Lordy Lord, the move here was pure adrenaline and nerves.  Below are the key lessons I’ve learned in this entire process:

1.  Marry a Mr. Magpie, or at least find one to date while moving.  I seriously hope you all find someone as awesome as mine, because he did all of the heavy lifting (ha, pun intended — but also in the figurative sense).  He arranged everything — quotes from the movers, loading permits, purchase of boxing supplies, stopping our Internet/cable back in D.C. and starting it up here, etc., etc.  He is the man.  I look at him with a new level of respect.  Girl, you should have seen the detailed Excel spreadsheets he had going in order to account for each and every item we were packing for our movers.  (B, I know you approve of this.)  Mind-boggling, overly-organized, and oddly attractive.

2.  Buy a billion and ten boxes.  Or better yet, a google plex of boxes.  (Remember when we used to say that all the time in elementary school?)  And lots of packing tape.  Like, more than you ever think you could possibly need in your whole life.  We had to make so many online orders and treks to Home Depot, we couldn’t believe it.  Buy more than you need; you can always return the extras.

3.  Invest in a couple dozen bottles of wine to facilitate the moving process.  Packing becomes much more tolerable with a glass of fruity red wine in your right hand.  (It could also explain why I packed a total of 10 boxes, while Mr. Magpie managed the other 80.  Ha.  Joking.  But kind of not.)  My girlfriends came over one afternoon with wine spritzers in hand, and it definitely eased the ol’ nerves.  (Thanks, Tini!)

4.  Beware of hidden moving costs.  We’d set a large budget for the move to account for movers, security deposits, etc., but there were lots of pesky unexpected costs that caught us off guard.  First, we had to eat out for like a week and a half straight because we’d packed all of our cooking ware and plates and then because we were on the go.  We were both grumpy about this because we prefer to cook in, but even moreso when we realized the amount of $$ we’d spent on food in seven days.  Second, Costco.  We  bought our own membership up here, and we looked at each other, wide-eyed and slightly impressed with ourselves, and said, “We are now adults.  We have done it.  We’ve turned the corner.  Now, we must quickly go and pre-set the radio to NPR and subscribe to Consumer Reports.”  Then we dropped several hundred dollars on boring adult things like Palmolive, saran wrap, and paper towels.  Boo, boring, dumb.  See ya, $$; see ya, youth.

I have lots of other tiddly bits to share with you, but I am quickly realizing that I’ve been typing for a long time and have not yet made mention of clothing, which is the main reason why you all are here.  And it’s also a much-needed escape from all of the unpacking/moving talk.  So, I’ll share with you what’s on my radar, clothing-wise: NEUTRALS.  Yes.  After a summer of neon, I’m looking for a vacation of easy, airy whites, almonds, taupes, and creams.  Tell me you don’t love the understated sophistication of these looks:

That raffia Chanel bag?!  SHUT up.  I love.  Oh, and P.S. — a lot of this emphasis on neutrals has to come up from this snap Mr. Magpie took of me moving into our new apartment:

Ha.  Right.  I was actually the greezy little grump ball wearing a top knot, a frumpled white throw-and-go sundress, and worn gold t-straps.  Uber chic.  But one can dream.  And so we will imagine that instead, I was wearing this little leopard pullover (it got chilly in the car — Mr. Magpie = polar bear) from J. Crizzle (on sale for $30!) and these linen shorts (on sale for $92) with a pair of slick ombre Stella shades ($225):

An Olympic finish?  These ankle-wrap flat Givenchies (to die — $890):

Or, score the look for less with this $235 Rachel Zoe pair.  I’d finish with the newest member of my covet dream team, the Phillip Lim Pashli ($875).  This will be mine by year’s end.

I also love it in the oh-so-impractical stark white color.  Dreamy, and very Rachel Zoe.  Who I also have a renewed passion for — have you seen her new jewelry collection?  As Ms. Zoe would say, “Shut the front door.”  Holy moly.  But anyhoots. I’d round out the entire look with this gold ram bracelet ($95):

Another outfit I’m looking to roll out some time soon?  A voluminous cream dress ($100) with a funky neutral necklace (love the rope accent — $25):

For work?!  Get outta here.  Chic, chic.  I’d finish with a pair of glittery flats ($195):

I’d add a little edge to this tres Audrey look with the Balenciaga city tote in yummy camel brown ($1,895):

Cha-ching.  For more casual fare, check out this buttonless blouse ($73) with some white jeans, some cool gal perforated leather flats (only $45!), and a chunky tassel necklace ($85):

The Anya Hindmarch “Tiny Tim” bag ($1,500) finishes the look with an exclamation point:

Love the medley of cocoa and cream colors there.  Another lovely concert of neutral hues?  This pinafore dress ($96) paired with chic horn-style shades from hot line Illesteva ($260)

Finish with these funky “Greek” sandals ($245) — my little nod to the Olympics.  So fun.

Also loving the idea of a long, chiffon maxi skirt (See by Chloe, $395) paired with a sleeveless white blouse ($160), this embellished tortoise-link necklace ($128), and some t-straps (on sale for $45!):

I’d finish with a little sunshine, in the form of this sunny Edie purse from J. Crew (on sale for $190!):

Two other accents at the top of my list?  This chunky Sara Designs necklace ($330 — wear with ANYTHING.) AND this studded cross-body mini from Zara ($100 — loves.)

…and we’re back up and running!  MISSED YOU ALL.  Loves.

Fringe Benefits

In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Fringe, Jewelry, Neutrals, White on June 25, 2012 at 10:23 am

I mentioned last week that fringe is going to be seriously in this summer.  And I, for one, embrace the judicious use of fringe in the ol’ wardroberooski.  Consider an airy, wear-anywhere-and-with-anything white summer dress ($365) with a unique, tasseled pendant necklace by under-the-radar line Dezso ($100):

Pair with some super-fun tasseled sandals ($295) and this cheery hibiscus-red DVF bucket tote ($545):

Or, let this embellished mini dress (on sale for $328) by Antik Batik do all of the work (on sale for $328) with some green drops ($100):

Pair with nude patent sandals (this pair by Gucci is on sale for $247!):

And, one of those drool-worthy PS1 clutches from Proenza Schouler ($895 apiece — pick your color!):

Or, go rocker chic with a fringed leather Michael Kors mini (uh, woahhhhh!  hey there, tiger! — on sale for $243) with a collarless white blouse ($50) and this awesome statement piece by Beth Lauren ($96):

I’d pair with these chic ankle-wrap sandals (only $49!) and this oversized envelope clutch (on sale for $49):

I’d finish the look with one (or both) of these mixed metal rings from House of Harlow ($65 each) — I’m totally obsessed!  I’m going to order the one with the gold horn and the silver band, and STAT:

If the above looks are a little too fierce for you, go ladylike with fringe wearing this tweed mini (on sale for $150 from Tory Burch!) with a sleeveless white blouse ($220 — or get the look for less with this $98 Madewell style) and one of those amazing Noble House necklaces I featured on Friday ($130):

I’d finish with white flats ($195) with a clean white tote by Alexander Wang (on sale for $548):

Alternately, how about this boucle jacket ($495) with these precious white fringe earrings ($125), some crisp white jeans, and metallic K. Jacques sandals (on sale for $211):

I’d finish with a platinum leather bucket tote ($125):

Chic, fresh shape.  Very Jil Sander.  Me likey.  Another cool-gal addition to the wardrobe?  This J.W. Anderson fringed top (on super sale for $660 — hardly a bargain, but still…), which I’d wear with a long tassel necklace ($230) and blue skinnies:

I’d accent with some fresh-looking heels (love these denim-accented platforms from Tory Burch, on sale for $245) and a fun raffia clutch ($79):

In closing — if you’re not sold on any of the looks above and just want a lil taste — check out this fun red hot Zara clutch ($99) or these fringed sandals (on sale for $45):

And, finally, who could say no to the genius of a Dannijo necklace ($845)?!

Swoons!  Happy Monday, all!  xxx

This stunning print ($28) by Leigh Viner absolutely took my breath away:

Love the composition of color — the intensity of the neon, the stark surprise of the black.  I’ve been daydreaming about this palette ever since.  Hence, I need this similarly hued top by Creative Commune ($198), and STAT.  I’d wear it with white shorts or jeans, some Oscar de la Renta black tassel earrings ($395), and some single-soled heels ($100):

I’d finish with this fun tiki bar clutch from Kate Spade ($348):

Or, I might wear this 3.1 Phillip Lim blouse (on sale for $175) with this statement necklace ($228), some black skinnies, and some black cap-toed canvas-and-patent flats ($138):

I’d finish with this fun clutchski ($360):

Or, how about this chic scalloped-edge top (on sale for $227) with some tangerine-colored shorts ($45) and a Holst + Lee statement necklace ($510 — although, have I shared with you my love for Adia Kibur?  I can’t be shelling out $500 for necklaces, and Adia Kibur gives me the chance to get lots of bold, fashion-forward style for a fraction of le prix):

I’d finish with some patent sandals by Maison Martin Margiela ($507 — but get the look for less here or go in between with a pair of K. Jacques) and this beyond adorable clutch by up-and-coming line Kayu ($155):

Also sweating this DVF dress (on sale for $212!)  — how big of a splash would you make sporting this bad boy?! — with some glam drops from Bounkit ($320):

I’d pair it with these simple black Zara heeled sandals ($49) –

– and this House of Harlow fringed clutch ($245).  Fringe is going to be HUGE this summer and fall.  (Check out some of the fringed metal jewelry from Jules Smith — loves.)

Loving the idea of black + brights/neons!  Happy Thursday!

Big Things Poppin

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Intimates, Shoes, Sundresses, The Honeymoon Trousseau on June 4, 2012 at 11:33 am

Yes, the title of this post hails from a T.I. jam.  Is there a problem?  {Apologies to my Magpie Mother.}  I was trying to think of an appropriate heading for this post, which is all about BIG, BOLD COLOR (I know, I know, nothing too original about that — we’ve been seeing neons and brights for the past season and a half…hope you aren’t bored of it yet!), and all I could think was: “Big things poppin, and little thing stoppin…[something unintelligible]…being broke is not an option.”  But if I’m being honest, the inspo for this post can be attributed to Miroslava Duma, the uber-chic Russian fashionista who founded the haute fashion website Buro 24/7 {yes, it’s in Russian, but the eye candy transcends language} and has since earned the glamorously vague job title of “Fashion Consultant,” a career title I place on the same aspirational plane as that of “financier.”  (What does a financier do, exactly, on a day to day basis, besides live in extravagance?  How awesome would it be to flash a business card that reads: “I’m Jane Smith, Financier”?  So, too, for Duma’s “Fashion Consultant” calling card tag line.)  If you don’t know about Miroslava Duma, you should probably follow me on Pinterest, as I obsessively pin her to my “Mavens” section.  You can also check out her digs via this Coveteur feature, which explores her closet.  Or, just swoon over the snaps from the shoot below:

LOVE.  LOVE.  LOVE. the color, the motion, the boldness of that swoosh of neon.  In that vein, how to die is this neon skirt ($250) with a feather-weight tank ($19)

Throw on some bold baubles, like these one-of-a-kind earrings by Pure Essentia ($105) or this faux gem necklace (I own it and dig it! — $98):

{As an alternative, check out this $58 find of a necklace.  Heartsies!}  I’d probably tone down the outrageous coloration with some nude platform sandals (love this $80 pair!)

I’d finish with one of these neon-striped clutchskis ($155):

And — I’d love to finish with a wristful of these Yarbie fabric bangles ($48-$79 each, depending on width):

Other hint-o-neon picks?  This woven clutch ($155) with these perfectly-coordinated Pierre Hardy tootsies ($735):

I’m also big into these neon bralettes ($19 each) — the perfect way to put a little (private) pep in your step:

For more casual beach or poolside lounging, snap up some of these colorful beach towels from The Girl and the Water ($29 apiece)

Now, I’m not huge into playsuits/rompers, as I discussed fervently with one of my gal pals this past weekend, but for beaching around, I can see it working, especially in the form of this DVF style (on sale for $72), over this Mara Hoffman two-piece (on sale for $183 — and BTW, I’m obsessed with Mara Hoffman, full-stop):

I’d finish with a colorful jelly tote ($98) and some neon t-straps ($44 and up, depending on color):

Or, how about some neon shades ($15) with an embroidered caftan ($286)?

Finish with metallic bow-toe sandals ($15 — for other affordable but uniquely designed sandals, check out Boutique 9) and a colorful confetti tote ($143):

HELLO, SUMMER.  Glad to have you here!

Tangelo Honey

In Accessories, Brights!, Dream Wear, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, White on May 24, 2012 at 4:27 pm

While in Miami with Mr. Magpie last week (hard to believe that was just over a week ago…it already feels like vague and dreamy memory), we listened to the Otis Redding channel on Pandora pretty much nonstop whenever we were in our hotel room (or on its balcony, enjoying G+Ts).  We both have a soft spot for Mr. Redding — his “Ton of Joy” was our wedding song.  Even now, just hearing the opening bars makes my stomach do flip flops.  We had taken dance classes over a series of weeks leading up to the wedding and had learned a simplified version of the rumba for our dancing debut.  We didn’t exactly have a “routine” — we didn’t want it to look cheesy and rehearsed — but it felt appropriate to actually dance rather than awkwardly, asynchronously rock back and forth.  (I was not blessed with rhythm.  Mr. Magpie was — he’s a talented drummer — but that will only take you so far.  As they say, it takes two to tango.)  I have to say, though, that we ruled our dance.  So fun.  Now, if only we could remember how to do the entire thing…one of the many casualties of time, I suppose?

At any rate, one of the songs that came up on the Otis channel while in Miami was Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic,” which for some reason caught me completely off guard with its raw poignancy.  I love when the brass comes in loudly halfway through the song — the perfect counterpart to the growly, soulful timbre of Morrison’s voice.  Though the song is a throwback to my early college years (when a crush burned me a Van Morrison mix CD, and I listened to it over…and over…and over), it will now forever be associated with the cozy luxury of that Miami trip.  I’ve clearly been listening to Van Morrison nonstop since, and his music has been percolating everything I’ve done this week.  Hence, the title of this post — an adaptation of the classic “Tupelo Honey” song title.

And scene.  Longest wind-up ever.  On to the meat of the matter: the ORANGE/TANGERINE color I’m digging so much.  Consider, for example, this awesome striped scarf (NEED — $125), a crisp white blazer ($535), and dressed-down denim shorts ($59):

I’d finish with tasseled flat sandals ($298) and an oversized clutch ($307):

Also loving this striped dress ($375) for its POP of tangerine, especially paired with these clover drops ($48):

Cool with these platformed Charlotte Olympias ($970) and MEANT to go with this fun clutch ($46):

For Memorial Day pool festivities (YES!), how about this little spot of sunshine in the form of a cover up (I know, I’m over the moon with love for LemLem these days — $200):

Perfect with a little hat ($70) and an orange-tasseled bag ($84):

And — of course — an orange two-piece by the one and only Mara Hoffmann ($200)!

P.S.  I love the entire Mara Hoffmann collection.  Have I mentioned this before?!  LOVE the colors, styles, shapes.  TO DIE.  Imagine laying out on this zebra-hide-style towel by Maslin ($225) — stylin’, eh?

Love the idea of denim with orange, like this ridiculously overpriced denim shift (almost $2K?! WHAT.  But die over the shape and style…) with this fun tribal-inspired knot necklace ($168):

I’d finish with this cheery clutch (love this new line, Morgan Parish! — $160) and some color-blocked Reed Krakoff sandals ($795):

In closing — loving a denim shirt ($120) with a funky necklace (I own a version of this unique necklace and wear it all.the.time — $54), tangerine J. Brand cut-offs ($159):

I’d round it out with these aqua-and-brown leather flat sandals ($89):

And then maybe this simple striped and knotted SeaBags tote ($165):

Easy Living

This past weekend gave me my first taste of summer, and there’s no turning back now.  I’m all in.  I wore a white sundress, saw the Good Humor truck in my neighborhood, and attended my first Nationals game of the season in stunningly low-humidity 70 degree weather.  This makes me oh-so-excited for throw-and-go summer gear — effortless, airy separates and classics that make the summer breeze on by.  I’m thinking of a linen throw-on dress (CP Shades) with a simple tortoise necklace ($275, Natori):

Perfect with all of your summer essentials tucked into a carry-all, broken-in leather tote ($140, Louise Goods) and some classic t-straps ($110, MustHaves):

I’d add only a few raffia bangles ($20 apiece, Ben-Amun):

Or, how about these easy-on chambray shorts (Elizabeth + James, $245, Net-A-Porter — or get the look for less with this $60 Madewell pair) with a striped Lem Lem top (obsessed with this brand — $200, LemLem — for more colors, see here) and a simple necklace (Marc Jacobs, $130, Ssense)?

Perfect with simple, wear-with-anything pearlized nude flips (Tkees, $48, Shopbop) and this punchy woven tote ($137, Deux Lux):

Perfect with your handy, retro-styled camera ($109, Lomography):

Throw your stuff in the basket of a Brooklyn Cruiser ($549, Brooklyn Cruiser), and you are good to go:

I’m also loving easy-on denim dresses in interesting/low-key shapes, like tunics and shifts.  This Acne style ($300, Net-A-Porter) caught my eye as just the thing to wear with a neon-hinted necklace ($80, Anthropologie):

I’d finish with these eye-catching Rebecca Minkoff sandals ($165, Saks) and a simple brown cross-body (Tory Burch, $475, Bergdorf Goodman):

Finally, I’m oddly drawn to the shape and tie-dye print of this A.P.C. number ($265, Nordstrom), which I’d offset with printed bead necklaces ($80, Glam-Net):

I’d finish with simple white sandals (K. Jacques, $235, Net-A-Porter) and a chic fringed clutch ($440, Jennifer Haley):

Ahhh, summer.

Miami (Ad-)Vice

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Florals, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Pastels, White on May 17, 2012 at 10:55 am

I’m back from Miami, tanned and rested.  (Read: sunburned and lazy.)  Turnberry Isle was phenomenal — its staff was spectacularly friendly and indulgent; the food was delicious (helloooo, trio of duck-fat fries from Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak…uh, yes.); and our accommodations were fit for a queen (and her king).  While I was a wretched mess by hole 11 of the golf course {gr}, the ample time spent worshiping the sun, downing cocktails, and listening to the Steve Jobs’ biography on Mr. Magpie’s iPhone left me completely satisfied and woozy with happiness.  I also got to roll out some of my louder fashion pieces, which left me more than thrilled.

A flamingo-pink maxi skirt ($395, Intermix) with a simple white tank ($19.50, Madewell), an enormous necklace ($45, Swell Caroline), and some silver flats (Zanotti, $595, Intermix):

I’d finish with a white cross-body (mine is the “Boyfriend” style, also by Rebecca Minkoff but no longer available — $195, Shopbop) and one or more of these CC Skye screw bracelets ($92, Boutique to You):

Or, throw all of your essentials for the pool into this woven tote ($68, Juicy Couture):

For golf, I wore J. Crew shorts and a vintage white Lacoste polo, but I easily transitioned to day-time hanging by pairing the shorts ($45, J. Crew) with a denim button-down ($80, Madewell) and a tangly statement necklace (Assad Mounser, $430, Net-A-Porter):

And finished with wedges (OMG…these are from the Webster for Target collection — $39, Target)

Perfect with this little cross-body ($110, Madewell):

Evenings called for silky little numbers, like this Amanda Uprichard lovely (on sale for $98, RGBSF) with statement earrings ($250, Helga Wagner):

I like the idea of finishing with these loud espadrilles (Kate Spade, $205, Zappos) and this darling ombre clutch ($198, Anthropologie):

I wore quite a bit of hot pink (including this little number, in the short version), like this Naven number ($335, Singer22), paired with lively earrings (NOIR, $110, Endless):

I’d finish with this fun clutchski ($450, Kotur) and some nude heels (Miu Miu, $695, Net-A-Porter):

For more casual, post-pool dining, I opted for flowy maxis along the lines of this darling colorblocked style (loveee the colors! — $334, Matches), paired with throw-it-on-and-go statement jewelry like this lovely necklace ($149, Club Monaco):

Finish with gold sandals (Dolce Vita, $69, Zappos) and a roomy gold clutch ($138, J. Crew):

I also managed to score this Webster for Target ($39, Target) dress just before leaving on Saturday.  It’s the most perfect Floridian dress that there ever was…and you can’t beat that price!  I wore mine with chunky green earrings ($65, J. Crew):

Any ol pair of flat sandals and a straw clutch work!

And now — I was SO MOVED by all of your lovely comments and entries for my three-year bloggiversary giveaway!  I love you all for reading with such sensitivity and kindness.  Here’s to many more years of Magpie!  The winner of the giveaway is: Erica Garcia!  I’ll be in touch so I can get your Magpie Surprise over to you!  xxxx

I’ve already posted on the BIG BLOOMS trend this season, but it’s time to get down to business and make a move on the trend.  I’ve seen so.many chic peas rocking oversized florals and it’s about time I join the bandwagon.

{L-R: Chloe, J. Crew, and Jason Wu}

Now, I’ll be the first to say that the head-to-toe floral suit get-up is not for me.  I can already imagine looking back and shuddering in about a year’s time — it’s like the power suit of 2012.  Yuck.  BUT.  Little pieces here and there?  Yes, please.  First on my list?  This cheery little shift ($50, Monki) with a funky little necklace ($125, The Remedi):

Finish with unfussy black flats (Repetto, $265, Shop Zoe) and a structured cobalt tote ($59, ModCloth — or go for the gold with this $1,495 Reed Krakoff style…to die.):

Or, go super on-trend with these dahlia-print pantalons ($75, Oasis — ALSO available in dress form for $115), a white peplum top ($258, Shopbop), this fun necklace ($310, Charm & Chain), and white Carrie Bradshaw pumps ($195, Vince Camuto):

Dreamy with the Phillip Lim mini Pashli ($725, Barney’s):

Or, thoughts on a white blouse ($88, J. Crew) with these fun floral shorts (Jason Wu, $695, Bergdorf’s), and this on-trend Shourouk necklace ($475, TheCorner — or get the look for less with this unbelievable find from Ann Taylor of all places!  Must.have.)?

I’d pair it with the neon Cambridge Satchel, which I finally scored this past week ($155, Shopbop) and some simple, clean white flats ($32, TopShop):

For something a bit less in your face, how about this slightly hippy-dippy floral print top (Sunner, $211, Les Nouvelles), a bronzed pendant necklace from my new favorite jeweler, Beth Lauren ($48)), white skinnies, and Tory Burch t-straps ($250, Saks):

I’d finish with the Chloe Marcie in denim ($1,325, Net-A-Porter):

Coachello-chic, n’est-ce pas?  Or, imagine these Jason Wu shorts ($865, Kirna Zabete) with a white blouse ($200, Very Eickhoff) and that bib necklace I’ve been swooning over in the poppy red ($36, Bauble Bar):

I might finish with these punchy woven flats ($69, Zara) –

– and a practical tote (Anya Hindmarch, $1,395, MyTheresa):

Or, what about this happy little number (Juicy, $280, Net-A-Porter) with some fleur studs ($55, Kendra Scott):

Finish with this punchy red clutchski ($395, Barney’s) and some cheery red strappy sandals ($98, J. Crew):

And, finally, the coup de gras: this darling petaled clutch ($175, GlamourPuss).  Imagine it with a simple white dress and some sky-high red tootsies.  TO DIE.

Happy Wednesday!

Though I lean towards tailored classics  in bold colors and lean shapes, I have a secret love affair with the upscale Coachella boho-chic look.  I’m not talking Tevas and crochet.  I’m talking loose-fitting voile dresses with embroidery, like this gorgeous little number ($294, MyWardrobe):

I’d finish with these chunky patterned heels (loves — Theodora and Callum, $355, ShoptheShoeBox) and this woven clutch ($128, J. Crew):

I like it with these funky, brightly-colored drops ($48, Max and Chloe):

And — why not?! — some friendship bracelets for your very own army party ($6.95 each, ShopKitson):

Alternately, consider this easy-fitting navy dress ($275, Epaulet Shop) with a cool-gal feather statement necklace ($388, Auden Design):

Finish with these eye-catching wedges ($595, Scoop NYC):

Perfection with this rocker-gal chic Balenciaga bag (LOVES.  I swear Kourtney Kardashian owns it in every color — $1,445, Barney’s):

Or, how about this drapey top (Rebecca Taylor, $355, Dealuxe) with a bold necklace (Suzanna Dai, $395, Charm and Chain), skinny jeans, and some printed platforms ($450, Shop the Shoe Box):

I’d finish it with this tasseled shoulder bag ($100, Mango)

Finally, dying/swooning over this breezy caftan-style dress (on sale for $299, Calypso) with a tribal-style necklace (Pamela Love’s stuff is all.the.rage — I know because I’ve seen Rachel Bilson wear it.  Duh.  — $1,250, Net-A-Porter):

I’d pair it with these cork wedges ($385, Scoop NYC) and this awesome printed clutch ($70, Cusp):

And scene.  Hope your week is fab to the max.  (?)  Personally, I can’t believe it’s only Tuesday.  Boo, hiss.  Miss ya, weekend.

Things I Like.

BEST.WEEK.EVER.

a)  My baby sister is ENGAGED!  EEEE!!!  I’m dying with excitement.

b)  I finally bucked up (bucked down?) and bought the Alexander Wang bag I’ve been whining about for about a century.  It brought a tear of joy to my eye when it arrived.  It is beautiful and so grown-up and everything I wanted it to be and more and…it’s mine!  {Fist pump.}

c)  Mr. Magpie caught me off guard by announcing that he is taking me away to Turnberry Isle for a romantic getaway weekend in just a few short weeks!!!  I’m pretty much doing back flips with glee and excitement, but also keenly aware of the fact that I need to do something serious about my winter-induced pallor.  My legs are translucent.  {He’s also signed us up for a round of golf, which should be laughable on my score.}

d)  My other baby sister got earned {she’s so qualified, it’s no joke} a fashion design job for an AMAZING, high-end fashion line.  I don’t know if I can mention which it is until she’s actually started, so…let’s just say I look forward to being well-outfitted thanks to her, and the steep discount I hope she’ll pass along my way.

e)  It’s almost Easter, which means I can almost eat my favorite sweet indulgent in the universe: Haribo gummies.  Yes ma’am.  Don’t even think that I won’t be rising with the sun to tear into a bag of gummy bears.

I’m sorry for being a braggart, but I am literally bursting with joy.  Life is too good.  And here are some things that are making my life even sunnier and brighter:

1.  The Perfect Vacation Sandal

I’m sorry to do this, but indulge me: I have freakishly small feet, and I can squeeze into these kids’ sandals ($49, Zara) in a size 5.  Are they not the most adorable pair of shoes you ever saw?  Imagine it with a hot pink pedi.  Score.  You can get a similar look in a regular, non-pixie adult size here or here.

2.  Bright Tote

I saw this reversible leather tote (white on one side, citrine on the other), and fell head over heels in love.  Such a fun color for right.now, and, when you’re sick of it, just turn it inside out for basic white ($399, Scoop):

3.  Chunky Necklaces

I saw a very chic lady snag an oversized chain-link necklace at a cute new boutique in North Georgetown last week called Dalton Pratt and have been on the hunt for something comparable since.  These colorful statement pieces ($26, BaubleBar) fit the bill nicely.

4.  Ikat Maxi

Holy moly — is this skirt ($325, Calypso) a vacation dream or what?!  I’ve been a bit tentative with the maxi skirt trend — I snagged one hot pink maxi at a ridiculous deal and it worked really well with a simple white tee and ginormous statement necklace, but…not until I saw this did I consider adding to the collection.  Can you imagine how chic you’d be styling it with a simple white tank and an oversized turquoise necklace?!

Perfect for a dinner out with Mr. Magpie while at Turnberry…!

5.  Speaking of Ikat…

These funky ikat print pillows from Amber Interiors ($60 each) caught my eye as a funky way to spruce up a couch.

6.  Updated Bath Mat

OK, this is sort of minor and specific, but how precious are these reversible chevron bath mats ($38, Garnet Hill)?!  Just the thing to “juge” up a boring bathroom…

7.  White Out

I have a vision of myself prancing around Turnberry in a white get-up with perfectly bronzed shoulders and beachy hair.  Ha.  To achieve the look, consider this ridiculously affordable maxi ($19, Target)

Perfect with these studded flats ($295, Net-A-Porter — OR, for something cheaper, check these puppies out):

I’d finish with pops of turquoise in the form of these seahorse earrings ($38, Lilly Pulitzer) and this coral necklace ($32, J. Crew):

I’d perhaps store my shades in this darling pouch ($75, Rebecca Minkoff):

8.  Neutrogena Makeup Remover Towelettes

I realize this is neither high-fashion nor particularly interesting, but Neutrogena Makeup Remover towelettes ($7.95, Drugstore) make my life.  For those evenings where you’re just too tired to wash your face…they do the trick nicely.

9.  Retro Shades

Ugh, these lucite frame shades (Acne, $350, Saks) are just too cool for school.  They have just the right amount of frame.

10.  Fun Cutlery

How amazing is this neon cutlery set ($38, Site NYC)?!  LOVE the idea of packing this for a picnic or sprucing up a traditional tabletop with these as accents.  Cute.

Have a lovely weekend!

Spring Has Sprung

In Accessories, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Pastels, White on April 2, 2012 at 9:59 am

Easter is just around the corner, meaning it’s just about time to roll out the pastel sundress parade, begin my sunless tanning regime, and prepare for the sugar fest that will be Sunday morning.  {I gave up sweets for Lent, and it’s been a long, sugarless string of weeks.  I have a bag full of Haribos waiting for me, and I can barely contain my excitement.} I’m pretty much thrilled.  Some top picks for peppy spring gear?  First: this darling affordable zig-zag shift (so Missoni-esque! — $52, Spool72) with some funky enorma-studs ($65, J. Crew):

I’d finish with these bomb.com laser-cut wedges (Chloe, $595, Net-A-Porter) and a straw clutchski (Tory Burch, $275, Saks):

Or, how about this lovely (very Betty Draper) shirt-dress ($80, TopShop) with big enorma-studs ($74, Oliphant):

Gorgeous with these wowza Lanvin heels ($1,150, The Webster Miami):

I’d finish with this picture-perfect DVF clutch in either the green or pink ($395, Shopbop):

Or, how about this robin’s egg blue dress (love that sweet little collar — $440, La Garconne) with a gemmed collar necklace ($475, Jennifer Miller):

With a neckline that prim, you gotta bring it with the heels — choose something slightly fierce, like these platformed sandals ($74, Heels):

Round it all out with a structured, lady-like tote ($729, Aspinal):

Want more of that dreamy sky blue color?  Check out these perfect pointy-toed flats ($29, Zara)

Lovely paired with these aqua drops ($34, Bauble Bar), or maybe as a triple threat with this easy breeze linen dress ($225, Calypso):

And finally, how about this breezy spring look?  A mint green vintage-style necklace ($362, Laura James), a gauzy white top ($295, Calypso), some colored skinnies (I’ve been hearing rave reviews about these AG “stilt” skinnies — $159, Shopbop — although I’ve also been keenly interested in checking out the DL1961 line.  One of my lovely Magpie readers owns a clothing boutique in VA and says that they are just flying off the shelves), and some funky white sandals (Red Valentino, $295, Net-A-Porter):

Finish it off with this darling mint-and-camel crossbody ($59, Nine West):

YAY for spring!  And, finally, a nice little gift for you this happy April morning: the design genius behind Paper Pastries, a darling paper goods/stationery e-boutique, has offered all of your lovely little Magpies 15% off your order between now and April 14th.  Just enter code “fashionmagpie” at check out.  Happy shopping!

In Accessories, Brights!, Florals, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes on March 26, 2012 at 9:44 am

A few things for your Monday morning consideration:

1)  I went to a mall on Sunday.  I feel as though I hadn’t been to a mall since I was in 8th grade, and am now keenly aware of why I’ve been avoiding them for so long.  A) Abercrombie and Fitch still exists?  And they still insist upon dumping bottles of their cheap cologne all over their merchandise, dimming the lights so low that you can’t see your own hands, and playing throbbing music so you can’t hear yourself think?  Interesting.  I didn’t step inside, but the stench of that cologne stings the nostrils from miles away.  B)  Food Courts are depressing.  C)  Auntie Anne’s pretzels are the jam.  D)  I forgot that all middle school children congregate at malls on the weekends.  Makes sense given the constraints under which they live (no car; parental supervision needed), but also makes for an overall unpleasant shopping experience.  I cringed at many-a conversation overheard.  Poor little ones.  I was equally as clueless and gossipy at that age.  E) I’m not going back to a mall for a l-o-o-o-n-g time.  Thank God for online shopping.  And while we’re on the subject, my biggest latest score?!  This $59 gingham linen dress.  OMG.  So precious.

2) There is a bomb.com giveaway at the end of this post.  Stay tuned.

3)  Shahs of Sunset?  Oh, hell yeah.  That show is my new best friend.  Trashy and dramatic — just the way I like my Bravo programming.  GG needs to get a grip, and Reza is quite possibly the most entertaining reality TV star to grace the small screen in a long time.  {Sorry, Brad Goreski, you’ve been replaced.}  Please tune in and share your thoughts with the group.

4)  Absolutely hilarious reading?  Suri’s Burn Book.  (!  Comic genius!)  I spent about two hours reading through the archives the other day.  You’re welcome.

And now, to the meat: printed clothing.  Man did the line Tucker do a number on me — I’ve been loving prints for the past two years, ever since that line got big.  Lately, it’s all I’ve been wanting to buy.  Example 1: this amazing top ($490, Marni) with some trim black shorts (really into the idea of shorts for night-wear at the moment — $162, La Garconne) and lovely drop earrings (Marni, $400, Net-A-Porter):

Finish with these perfectly coordinated heels (Tibi, $365, Bloomingdale’s):

And how about this punchy pink purselette ($59, ModCloth):

Or, for the prepster in you, consider this charming sailboat print top (only $29, Old Navy) with flat-front shorts ($49, J. Crew) and a nautical-inspired rope-accented necklace (Marni, $690, Barney’s):

I’d finish with these adorable sandals (Fendi, $475, Farfetch):

I’d finish with a bronze cross-body (on sale for $445, Pret A Beaute):

Alternately, check out this fun shift dress ($195, Thistle and Clover) with a tonal pendant necklace (Trina Turk, $250, Bloomingdale’s):

Dreamy with these teal peeptoes ($89, Vince Camuto):

I like it finished with one of those awesome Chloe Marcies in a deep denim ($2,265, Barney’s):

Or, how about this pair of funky shorts (Jason Wu, $695, Kirna Zabete — or get a similar look for less with this $49 Gap pair, which I almost purchased this past weekend) with a pink blouse (love this collarless DVF style — $265, Net-A-Porter):

I’d finish with the world’s most perfect wedge (Ras, $250, Shopbop — check out all the other amazing colors this shoe comes in, and die with me!):

Tory Burch also has some amazing wedge/espadrille styles out this season.  She always nails it in the footwear department.  I’d finish the look above with a clean white crossbody (love this style — Reed Krakoff, $590, Neiman’s):

Finally, I recently saw this paisley dress at H&M ($49, H&M) and was smitten.  They’d already sold out in my size, but maybe one of you lucky magpies can snatch it up.  You should pair it with a statement necklace — either something chunky and white or something along the lines of this amazing style ($570, Ssense):

I’d tone down the craziness with some classic white pumps (how Carrie Bradshaw — $195, ShoptheShoeBox):

Finish with this blue tote ($99, Zara):

Want the look in a smaller dose?  Consider these accessories: first, the most amazing mixed-print wedges (Rupert Sanderson, $710, Ssense)

Or, what about these lovely and affordable clutches/wallets from Falcon Wright ($40-$52, Falcon Wright)?

And now, for what you’ve all been waiting for: the GIVEAWAY.  Today, the amazing team over at ShopSosie have offered one lucky duck reader this ah-may-zing shift dress!  All you have to do to win it?

1)  Like ShopSosie on Facebook.

2)  Leave a comment on this post telling me which of the items in today’s post tickled your fancy the most :)

Also, if you’d be a sugarplum and either like me on Facebook or follow me on Pinterest, I will count your entry TWICE!

A winner will be announced this Thursday, 3/29!

In Accessories, Black, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Minimalista, Neutrals, Shoes, White on March 22, 2012 at 10:53 am

I’ve been featuring a circus of loud and bold colors over the past few posts, so I inevitably feel drawn to wear the opposite today.  Black.  Black.  And more black.  Maybe a pinch of white or another neutral.  My Magpie Mother is cringing somewhere in NW D.C. as I write this.  {Does your mom always tell you that you look sooo much better in color, too?!}  Color may be mood-enhancing and capable of imparting a freshness to your overall look, but no one can argue with the ease and eterna-chicness of a black and white color combo.

If I could be wearing anything right now, I’d pick this L’Agence lace dress ($400, Net-A-Porter) with this speckled statement neklace (to die. — $140, Loren Hope):

I’d finish with those Thierry Mugler heels I’ve been swooning over ($1,225, Opening Ceremony) and a piped clutch ($100, Coast):

Preferably with this on my wrist ($2,500, Hermes):

Man.oh.man.  If I ever come into a big pot of $$ or somehow find myself a bajillionaire, that will be my first big girl purchase.  Done and done.

Or, how about this frayed tweed top from Alice + Olivia (see it worn to great effect on Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific here! — $265, A+O) paired with a chain necklace ($54, Spring Street), black skinnies, and cap-toe flats ($

Very Olivia P., eh?  Finish with a structured black tote ($79, Zara) and some oversized shades (YSL, $325, Net-A-Porter):

I might add a little scarf  — this McQueen skull print one has long been on my lust list ($445, Net-A-Porter):

Loans some edge to the look.  I’d top it all off with a trench coat in an unexpected white hue ($49, Target):

For some fresh new accessories, consider these giraffe-print flats ($185, Intermix) or this stark white tote (so awesome in person — just scoped it out on a lunch break! — $875, Bergdorf’s):

I’ve also been digging profiles with a bit of volume these days.  Thoughts on a simple crewneck ($65, J. Crew) paired with a full skirt (The Row, $875, Farfetch) and a statement necklace ($127, Bottica)?

Love it with these loud statement wedges (O to the MG — Charlotte Olympia, $945, Net-A-Porter):

HOT.  Need those badboys.  DREAMY.  And, as we hinge towards SUMMER (it’s supposed to be 80 today!!!  WHAT.), I like this breezy blouse (Thakoon, $260, Kirna Zabete) with tailored white shorts (Proenza Schouler, $395, Kirna Zabete) and some geometric studs ($49, Shop The Trend — P.S. — love House of Harlow 1960, if you can’t already tell!)

I’d finish with these darling statement sandals ($175, Loeffler Randall):

I’d finish with this simple, clean tote ($935, Mulberry), although — despite my earlier proclamation about a need for black/white, I’m kind of loving the idea of a splash of magenta –

Although…let’s be honest: if I’m spending $935, I’ll probably spring for one of those Alexander Wang totes I’ve been droning on about for centuries.  Le sigh.

Punch Drunk

In Accessories, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on March 20, 2012 at 9:52 am

Yesterday, I wore a hot pink-and-orange-ombre skirt.  I was pretty much ecstatic all day long — that punch of pink was just what I needed to kickstart the week and take my mind off of missing Mr. Magpie, who is currently traveling in Panama with a few buddies.  {Is it uber-lame that he’s been gone less than 48 hours and I miss him already?  To the point that I may have worked out twice on Sunday just to keep myself busy and may have also found myself thumbing through our wedding album nostalgically?  Eep.  I swear I’m a strong and independent little lady, but my GOD, I miss that boy.}  Does clothing ever work as a mood enhancer for you, too?  If not, consider adding a dose of sherbert coloring to your wardrobe.  I swear it’ll put a little pep in your step.  Prozac in fabric form. {Incidentally, get the ceramic container below for $88 from Jonathan Adler — he has an entire collection of kitschy/cheeky canisters along the same lines.}

Take this as a point in case: I wore a variation on the following outfit in Vegas, and was in a great mood all day, even after I spilled a full vodka soda on myself while trying to squeeze it into one of the koozis I’d had custom made for the weekend {rookie mistake}: long maxi skirt ($148, J. Crew), white tee ($29, Madewell), a bold necklace in a bright, contrast-color hue ($140, Loren Hope), and some neutral t-straps ($69, Zappos):

Finish with this bomb.com chevron clutch ($199, Hammocks and High Tea):

Or, how about this striped, gauzey cardi ($155, Jades24) with a crochet necklace (loves! — $220, Emma Cassi), white skinnies, and some nude patent flat sandals (Gucci, $495, Saks)?

Ideal finished with the Reed Krakoff “Atlantique” tote ($1,415, Colette) I’ve been swooning over:

Alternately, go uber-bold with a pink-and-orange asymmetrical dress (M Missoni, $745, Harvey Nichols) with a mah-jor statement necklace (OMG…Vionnet, $749, MyTheresa):

I’d finish with these sparkling flat sandals ($110, WeLikeFashion) and a gold Kotur clutch ($400, Neiman’s):

Or, how much do you love this simple pleated shirt-dress ($100, TopShop)?  Lovely with a gold collar necklace ($228, Kate Spade):

I’d finish with simple gold pumps ($225, Vince Camuto) and a pink-and-orange purse ($595, Rebecca Minkoff):

Other punchy picks to blend into your wardrobe?  How about these retro-inspired shades (love the shape — $128, Kate Spade), this striped sleeveless blouse (Equipment, $208, Les Nouvelles), and these color-blocked sandals (Sergio Rossi, $275, Barney’s):

Or, check out this artful scarf ($175, Kelly Wearstler) — perfect paired with a color-blocked clutch ($46, Tobi):

Or, let the dress do all the work with this beyond adorable ikat shift dress ($395, Sheridan French) and some cluster earrings in the same palette (KJL, $90, Bloomingdale’s):

Dreamy with some fun white sandals ($171, Pret-A-Beaute) and a pink-trimmed straw clutch ($195, Otte NY):

Um, can anyone tell I’m dying for summer?!

Sister Act

In Accessories, Americana, Fresh Combos, Gifts!, Home Decor, Pop of Red, Shoes on March 14, 2012 at 9:13 am

My three sisters are the best gifts my parents ever gave me.  They’re different as can be, and they’re all plain freaking awesome.  We’re as close now as we were when we were wee little rugrats, playing “Barbs” {even then, we were prone to abbreviations} on Saturday mornings.

I’ve been thinking a lot about them lately as we navigate different junction points in our respective lives.  While I, as leader of the pack (ha — we all know that big sisters look up to little sisters, too), contemplate different life moves with Mr. Magpie, my next youngest sister is burning the midnight oil as she completes her second year of teaching wee ones to read in her first grade classroom and generally making the universe a better place with her boundless generosity and concern for others.  Meanwhile, the next youngest is busy kicking ass and taking names as she wows the world with her outrageous creativity and devilish sense of humor (she made THE Sarah Jessica Parker laugh in a meeting) and interviews for fashion design jobs in the Big Apple.  At the same time, she’s nurturing — with that beautiful sensitivity and solicitude of hers — a long-distance relationship with one of my favorite young men on the planet (also a secret TFM advocate — I hear that he has some of the ladies in his office reading.  Love ya, A!  I’ll send some emoticons your way later today).  Finally, the littlest prepares for summer programs/internships as the resident family genius while she rounds out another intense semester of U-Chicago undergrad studies, where she’s been dazzling classmates with the sheer weight and breadth of her intellect.  Oh, and being the sweetest little lady you’ve ever met all the while.  {Down-to-earth and brilliant?  Never the twain have met, until she was born.}

All of our lives seem pointed in such dramatically divergent directions, with such different stressors and priorities, that I often marvel over the fact that we fall in sync with one another so easily and naturally, without fanfare or pause.  Seeing my littlest sassy-pants sister after a few weeks is just like seeing her after an afternoon away — we snap right back into place.  (And then she quickly bores of my bossiness and insistence upon labeling her a “hipster.”)  So today’s post is about companionship and sisterhood — about being two peas (or, in our case, four peas) in a pod.  I’m liberally adapting that concept to feature products that are two-of-a-kind.  Things that just belong together.  {And psst.  While I was putzing around Pinterest, saw this hilarious little snap and instantly thought of my next youngest sister, aka partner in crime, who took the blame more than her fair share.}

Sistah Scenario #1: Neon Accents

Um, YES to this necklace ($325, Madame Mathilde).  And YES to this clutch ($59, ModCloth).  And YES to the two of them living together in happy harmony.

Wouldn’t these be lovely accents to a breezy white dress?!  OK, OK, despite yesterday’s post to the contrary, I’m clearly not fully ready to divorce myself of all of the BRIGHTS and NEONS that have dominated the past few seasons.

Sistah Scenario #2: Nautical By Nature

As you know, I’m into the preppy nautical vibe.  This duo of collectibles {striped tote — $228, J. Crew;  needlepoint flats — $174, ByPaige} makes my heart sing.

Sistah Scenario #3: American as Apple Pie

Hello, gingham (shorts — $55, J. Crew; Miu-Miu heels — $595, Bergdorf’s).  Preferably not worn together, unless you are Carrie Bradshaw.

Sistah Scenario #4: Geek Chic

Grab some stylish specs ($95, Warby Parker) and throw all your nerdy essentials into a classic canvas tote (J.W. Hulme — $260, ShopTwigs):

The twinsies above kind of make me want to go back to school…

Sistah Scenario #5: Zebras on the Loose

If you follow my {covets} page, you’ll know about my obsession with this wallpaper by Scalamandre.  Get the look in bits and starts with this scarf ($25, Fred Flare) or these pillows ($72 each, Dwell Studio):

Sistah Scenario #6 — Pure Gold.

OK, sometimes you gotta make room for a trio.  How slick do these items look together?  {Glossy iPhone case ($35, Shopbop), crystal-encrusted cocktail ring ($255, ShopTwigs), and glitterati heels (Miu Miu, $730, Net-A-Porter.}  Pair with LBD and head to Vegas immediately.

Sistah Scenario #7: Peachy Beachy (?)

I can already imagine my Mom’s ears pricking up when she sees the words “peach” and “beach” together — two of her most favorite things.  Mom, this one’s for you.  Hat — $15, Les Pommettes; kurta — $70, Rikshaw Design.

Sistah Scenario #8: Confetti!

I’m a huge fan of sparkle and glitter.  So I love the thought of these glammed out drops ($150, Amrita Singh) with this boxy glitter clutch ($69, Nine West):

THANK GOD FOR LITTLE SISTAHS!

Simple Geometry

Sorry for going dark on you all — I was in VEGAS.  For my bestie’s bacheroo.  And it was awesome.  To begin: the entire city feels like an elaborate ploy to make you spend money.  They should pretty much forgo all pretenses and have you dump out all the $$ in your wallet and checking account upon arrival and then distribute the costs evenly between all purveyors in the city, because you will probably end up shelling it all out anyway, and on random things like cups that change color depending on your beverage’s temperature.  The sidewalks  spit you out into high-end malls (“Well, I might as well just pop into this Balenciaga store since I’m already here…”); there are mixed drink stands everywhere and no open-container laws, meaning lots of booze-fueled decisions are made; the lights tend to be dimmed, likely to disguise the filth and griminess of your surroundings and to somehow make you feel glamorous and mysterious.  {I did.  I felt like Fergie’s “Glamorous” was playing in the background every time I walked through a casino with my hair flowing in the “wind” — the casinos pump in fresh oxygen to keep people awake and to therefore encourage more gambling.}  Somehow we ended up taking limos around town — we were sort of corralled into separate lines while waiting for cabs and would then find ourselves in the backseat of a stretch, saying: “Oh, OK, this is happening.”  Hilarious.  And did I mention the people watching?!  What.the.flip.  Where are these people from?!  I swear that all the sketchballs in the universe congregate in Vegas on the weekends and moonlight as either club promoters or lurk-in-the-cornerers.  BUT for all that badmouthing, the bachelorette was just as I’d hoped: full of laughter and adventure.  The perfect way to see my little bestie off to wedded bliss!

And now, to do a complete about-face, let’s turn to a fashion trend I’m digging right now: geometric shapes.  Yes.  It’s here, and it’s going to rock your world.  (?   You’ll have to excuse any over the top statements I make for the next week or so — I blame Vegas.)    The focus of my obsession with this trend?  This amazing suede clutch ($89, ASOS).  Yes.  I need this.

I’d wear it with a huge statement necklace (O.M.G — Etro, $1,895, Net-A-Porter) and a simple black tee dress ($150, John Lewis) –

I’d finish with those glossy gold Michael Kors sandals I’ve already featured (I die — $595, Neiman Marcus):

Or, take your pick of any of these eye-catching accessories — perhaps a pair of Piet Mondrian-style tootsie ($1,161, Luisa Via Roma)?

Or this geometric-patterned clutchski ($35, ASOS)?

I’m also a ginormous fan of this structured mini ($710, Costume National) and some geometric earrings ($280, Marni):

Make a statement with these zig-zagged print platforms (WOW. — Vionnet, $795, Net-A-Porter) and a textured clutch ($168, TheOutnet):

Alternately, how about this artful DKNY number ($445, Stylebop) with this deco-style necklace (Fiona Paxton, $297, Revolve)?

I’d finish with sculpted black suede sandals ($382, Boutique1) and the good ol J. Crew Edie ($238, J. Crew):

Check out this blouse ($225, Marni), a structured necklace ($25, NastyGal), and some skinnies –

– perfect with these suede shoes ($1,150, Intermix) and a structured tote (3.1 Phillip Lim, $875, Shopbop):

For more high-voltage color options, check out this funky, structured necklace (Shourouk, $890, Beklina) –

– or one of these psychadelic clutches ($235, Not Just a Label):

Finally, how to die is this geometric shift dress (10 Crosby by Derek Lam, $325, Shopbop) with this House of Harlow necklace (I own this and LOVE it — $75, Nordstrom):

Kind of perfect with these chunky Barbara Bui beauties ($885, Ssense) and the Alexander Wang Rocco ($875, Shopbop):

Or — and I know we’re still a long ways from bikini season — test the look in swimwear form with this Agent Provacateur two-piece ($220 for top, $170 for bottom — Net-A-Porter):

Can’t get enough of these color-blocked/geometric styles?  Check out Mara Hoffmann.  Her collection is right on point!

Denimography

In Accessories, Americana, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes on February 23, 2012 at 1:06 pm

Fun fact: neither my mother nor my father own a pair of jeans.  It honestly boggles my brain to envision either of them duding around in denim — they’re both far too formal.  I, on the other hand, live and breathe in jeans.  Quite the jean-eration gap.  HAHAHA.  Dumb.

Anyway, all bad puns aside, today, I thought it appropriate to finally pay homage to the fabric of my life.  Though I clearly am a skinny jean kinda gal, I’ve slowly been enticed by some of the boot cuts and wider leg styles coming back en vogue.  Check out these trouser-style jeans (Tibi, $285, Net-A-Porter).  Perfect with an airy voile top with something of a hippie vibe ($225, Calypso) and some big studs (Kenneth Jay Lane, $75, Net-A-Porter):

Finish with some brown leather wedges ($89, Zara):

– as well as a stack of patterned bangles ($21, ASOS) and the PS1 pochette in poppy python ($1,735, Proenza Schouler):

On the weekends, I’m all about chambray button-downs and tunics, like this style ($59, J. Crew), which I’d pair with leggings, a gauzy scarf (DVF, $250, Shopbop), and some mocs (I’m not sure the pricing on these puppies, but I just discovered them via Dee Keller!)

I’d finish with an easy carry-all (this clean white style startled me with its design — loves — $386, See Vivier):

Oh, and these rad frames from Elizabeth and James ($185 — a Shopbop exclusive!)

Alternately, go with the tangerine tango color by sporting this unbelievable open-weave lace top (Sass & Bide, $840, Net-A-Porter), enorma-studs ($770, Sue Fisher King), white skinnies, and these bad.ass. denim wedges (Chloe, $895, Net-A-Porter)

Kind of bomb with these bold, patterned clutcheroo ($235, Not Just a Label):

Or, how about this checked blouse ($140, Aubin and Wills) with a collarless boucle jacket (Zac Posen, on sale for $712, The Outnet — or get the look for less with this $89 Zara style), a tangly pearl necklace ($195, Juliet and Company), skinnies, and some spiffy flats (Kate Spade, $225, Bloomingdales):

I’d finish with a contrasting-colored cross-body ($238, J. Crew):

Finally, a few separates to put a little pep in your step — first, a denim blazer (I wear mine all.the.time, though mine cost only $29 at H&M! — ACNE, $530, Net-A-Porter):

And PSST.  If the blazer ain’t yo thang, check out this affordable ($74!) anorak variation!  Other possibilities?  An inexpensive denim clutch (love the fiery red zipper — $27, Motel Rocks) or a frilly denim top ($214, Farfetch) –

– either of which would look unbelievable with these blush-and-tangerine wedges ($99, Zara):

Ahhh, denim.  Endlessly versatile and fresh-looking.  I’m loving it in the mid-blue color at the moment…

And now, the real reason why you’re reading today’s post: the WINNER of the fab Stella + Dot giveaway from the lovely Dawn Biddlecomb!  The winner is: AMANDA!  All I have to say is: “Hey, purple.”  Haha.  Seriously loved the hilarious and at times painful/awkward responses this post received.  Thanks for sharing.  Amanda, drop me a line so we can ship you your AH-MAY-ZING necklace!

Sportive

In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Jewelry on February 20, 2012 at 10:08 am

When I lived in Lyon, France, I made a bee-line for the ridiculously overpriced and underwhelming “gym” (yes, that word should live in a serious set of air quotes, because it essentially consisted of a poorly ventilated room with a couple of old, rusty cardio machines adjacent to a dance studio with horrible overhead lighting and a noticeable B.O. problem) in an effort to stave off my homesickness…and any potential weight gain from the fantastic French fare.  Initially, I would slip into my gym gear at home and walk to the two blocks to the gym, but I resolved to pack my clothes after more than my fair share of eyebrow raised looks of confusion {based on the reception my get-up received, I would guess that wearing gym clothes outside of the home was tantamount to wearing your pajamas to Church or something, according to les lyonnais} and one particularly strange incident that I have puzzled over for years.  As I was walking down the street in my Nike spandex and windbreaker, a man leaned out of the window of his car and yelled, “Tu es sportive!”  He didn’t look particularly menacing or lewd; his delivery instead suggested that he was saying something along the lines of “Hey, you dropped your keys” or something of comparable neighborly kindness.  And “tu es sportive” translates to: “You look athletic”/”you are sporty.”  ?!  What was that?!  A cat-call?  Most random pick-up line ever — sorta like yelling, “You have red hair!” or “You’re wearing a green shirt!”  Strange.  Now Mr. Magpie and I will exchange faux “cat calls” along these lines every now and then — “you have really brown hair”; “you look sporty“; “you’re wearing running shoes!”  You know, things that sound like they might be compliments but actually achieve nothing.

All of this is a long wind-up to justify the title of this post, which came to mind after thinking about how much I’ve loved the slightly athletic/sport-inspired looks I’ve seen all over the runway.  I’m not into anything that’s literally akin to athletic gear {I don’t think I’ll ever get into the surfer girl styles — sorry, Proenza Schouler}, but certain color combinations (black and orangey-red) and smart cuts achieve the overall aesthetic.

For example, love this combo dress in the perfect racing colors (Sandro, $320, Net-A-Porter) alongside that fab J. Crew bubble necklace ($150, Net-A-Porter):
