Olivia P. is constantly spotted in Tibi.  Ergo, I must also own Tibi.  And I think this dress ($435) is a good place to start, especially with this Alexis Bittar statement necklace ($375):

Confetti

In Accessories, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, White on April 24, 2013 at 11:12 am

First – the title of this post makes my mouth water for a confetti sprinkle cupcake.  You know — the super-fake, non-organic, boxed Pillsbury mix?  Yum.

Second – fresh whites paired with pops of BRIGHT confetti color.  That’s what I want right now.  Partly inspired by these cheery seaside photos (image 1; image 2 — both $19+ depending on size and frame) from Minagraphy.  Slightly reminiscent to me of Maison Gray’s genius, but at a fraction of the prix.

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 8.07.52 PM

For example, I am loving this cheery aqua necklace (Hyla Dewitt, $130) with this great, slightly hippy-dippie macrame dress ($150 — loves.  Coachella chic, ladies.)

Or, maybe a little white-on-white action in the form of this pair of white scalloped shorts ($60) and this beautiful gauzy blouse ($195), accented with this simple cord-and-bead necklace ($33! — love Etsy):

AND this mega-great bag in stark white ($308):

Sometimes, I want to rid my closet of all things frilly and colorful in favor of simple and sophisticated black + white.  I bounce back and forth between this extreme and the other, i.e., lots of mish-mashed bright colors and patterns.  Today I’m of the former mind, and I wish I was wearing this ($575 — yah, yah, I know it’s a jupsuit-type-thing, but it’s just so sleek and looks like it could be separates) with some lovely drops ($495 — obsessed with the line ASHA) and these inexpensive ankle-strap heels ($49):

This dotted Phillip Lim clutch ($876 — or get the look for FAR less with this inexpensive find) would finish the look perfectly:

Screen Shot 2013-03-27 at 8.59.05 AMI’d offset the sophisticated look with a bright red lip (Nars’ Heat Wave is pretty bomb — $26 — and P.S., I just bought Nars’ Roman Holiday, a pretty soft pink, and am literally obsessed — ob.sessed. with the color.  BUY.  Immediately.):

I am also very into the idea of a wrap maxi skirt like this white style ($190 — so sophisticated!) with this black silky tank (love the neckline — $120) and a pop of color in the form of these fun drops ($26):

For something more casual, how about a ladylike top ($198) with a statement necklace (wow — $206; if that’s too funky for your taste, a simpler tassel/lariat necklace like this one would do the trick), some leather-esque leggings ($194) and some polka-dot flats ($49)?

Screen Shot 2013-03-27 at 9.41.39 AMFinally, while on the topic of black + white, I have to share a recent obsession.  My bestie has long been coercing me into getting no-chip (shellac) manicures, and they do work like a charm for someone like me, as I’m often cooking/washing and have been known to ruin a manicure within a few hours of receiving it.  I’ve been getting stark white nails (usually OPI’s Alpine Snow) — obsessed at the moment.  I know it sounds scary, but it comes off looking very…polished and sophisticated.

So, it’s not quite spring.  But that doesn’t mean a girl can’t dream / plan for the future.  I’m attending several weddings and rehearsal dinners and showers in the coming weeks, so it’s about time to stock up.  At the tippy top of my list is this beautiful, ladylike pleated dress from M Missoni ($795 – I know, I was also shocked that this was from Missoni!) with my very favorite earrings from Suzanna Dai ($138 — I own this EXACT pair and have gotten so much mileage out of them!):

I am headed to The Big Apple this weekend for a dear friend’s engagement party, and though I was hell-bent on “shopping the closet” (in part because I know I own 3489 cocktail dresses that scarcely see the light of day, and in part because I spent hours and hours perusing online and didn’t see much to my liking), I began to panic last week when I realized I actually hate everything in my closet.  Well — less hate, more ennui in the fin de siecle style (i.e., yawn and look down with distaste).  Does this happen to anyone else?  Then I watched the Oscars last night (delightful) and wished I could step up my game.  If I could wear anything this weekend, I would wear this gilded wonder from Lanvin.  Don’t worry, it will only require that you re-mortgage your house and sell your car.  (How can it cost nearly $7K?!)  But isn’t she lovely?!  Amazing with some mint green-accented earrings ($80):

In closing, you need to know about two other gilded lilies (?) that I’m currently coveting and that belong in this metallic/frosted post: 1.  These Zara shoes ($90), which my super chic little sis would totally rock; and 2. This woven wonder of a necklace from Lady Burch ($750).

Screen Shot 2013-02-25 at 9.41.32 AMwheatInspired by the looks above, I seriously considered this metallic jacquard number, which is conveniently on sale for only $136 now.  Love that it HINTS at the peplum style, but without the actual volume.  (And P.S., if you’re still loving peplum, check out this Nicholas wonder, which I also briefly considered.)  But I’m still undecided…

…and fade to black.

In Accessories, Black, Cocktail Dresses, Fierce, Jewelry, Neutrals, Shoes on February 21, 2013 at 1:04 pm

APOLOGIES.  This post should have gone live last Tuesday…so it’s a bit out of date.  Forgive the anachronisms!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I know I should be running a Valentine’s Day post, but I’m feeling black and white, and what the heart wants…it gets (?  Is that how that idiom goes?)  I have to admit that I do love Valentine’s Day — I’ll take any day that involves lobster + champagne for dinner (a February 14th tradition chez Magpie) and an excuse to wear pink.  But, I will be the anti-hero aujourd’hui and instead indulge a preference for high-contrast b+w.  Very Kim Kardashian.  (Or, as my Dad calls her in the way only a man who takes absolutely no interest in pop culture and therefore cannot be bothered to look closely at the spelling of an icon’s name could, “Kim Kuh-day-zee-en.”  Excuse the stream of consciousness — I’m just a regular Holden Caulfield over here, aren’t I?  Start to worry if I begin to overuse the word “phony” — but just saying my Dad’s name reminds me that I’m flying out to Seattle tomorrow to toast my brother and his beautiful bride (now sister in law!  YEEEEE!) and I get to spend the whole weekend with my entire family.  I am a giddy gumdrop.  All four of my sibs + significant others + my parents = glee.  I know I’ve not spoken much about my father on this little bloglet, but it’s with good reason: a) I can hardly write a line about him without tearing up.  He is my absolute hero, the classiest and most intelligent gentleman out there.  And my sisters and I all absolutely idolize him.  You should see us when he stands up for a toast at an event — which will inevitably happen this weekend, I just realized — all four of us start sobbing by the time he makes his way to the front of the room.  He is a man of few words, so when he speaks, words weigh heavily.  He also happens to be incredibly articulate (perhaps the best-read man in the universe) and at the same time, despite the fact that he is an attorney by trade, fought in the Vietnam War, and is short on patience when it comes to things he deems beneath his intelligence, and therefore SHOULD be a tough cookie, he wears his heart on his sleeve and is a huge softie for those he loves. See?  Already making myself misty-eyed.  and b) My father is fiercely private.  It feels antithetical to all he stands for to speak openly about him here.  But — there are so many things to say; so many lessons to share; so many unbelievable examples of his genius and kindness that deserve to be spoken of.   I know I owe at least a full post to him, if for no other reason than that it feels wrong not to speak of one of the most important people in my life.)
And…fade to black.  Excuse that digression, ladies.  You can chalk it up to the fact that I’m SO EXCITED TO GET TO SEATTLE and that I am delaying bedtime as long as possible while snacking on my favorite treats, as tomorrow marks the beginning of Lent, and I gave up snacking between meals.  It’s going to be Brutal.  (Capital B.)  I am pretty much a grazer by nature, so this will involve a reboot of my current nutrition plan.  And by nutrition plan, I mean the lack of any actual plan.
OK, so here goes: first, can I get a “hell yeah” to this Prabal Gurung for Target wonder ($50)?!  YES.  Yes.  Yes.  Perfect with these art-deco Rachel Zoe drops ($250):
The title of this post may call to mind the universe’s most exclusive high school clique ever, commandeered by the one and only Regina George, BUT this is not an homage to “Mean Girls,” great movie that it is.  (Also, an interesting pre-apocalyptic study in Lindsay Lohan, as it was the last decent thing she worked on before she unraveled.  It’s sort of sad in that respect.  She was so cute, so promising!  And then…)  This post is really about a ridiculous raincoat (Valentino, $755) that I found thanks to bloggerina Natalie Merrilyn (thanks, darlin!)
Part whimsy, part insane, and mainly just awesome eye candy for this Thursday.  It’s almost looks like a jellyfish.  High-contrast, high-fashion.  And goes hand in hand with Sophia Webster’s latest collection, which includes these puppies ($395):
Faute de Mieux
In Accessories, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Fresh Combos, Gold, Home Decor, Pop of Red, Shoes on December 14, 2012 at 10:26 am
The French phrase “faute de mieux” is a linguistic gem.  Its very existence reflects both the center and circumference of a distinctively French attitude.  “Faute de mieux” translates literally as “for lack of something better” — and only the French would have a figure of speech of such dismissiveness and nonchalance, n’est-ce pas?  Us optimistic Americans just use the neutral “instead.”
But, today’s post is in fact aptly titled “faute de mieux” because I couldn’t quite corral my diversity of covets into a cohesive post.  That, and I thought the phrase sounded cooler than “Instead.”  So sometimes the French have it right — at least where aesthetics are concerned.
Alright, that was a lot of pedantry for a Friday morning, so let’s cut to the chase here.  Things to drool over:
1.  IllBeCa by Joy Gryson Church Street Envelope ($98).
UM, what.  Is this not the chicest thing since sliced brioche?  (????  Don’t know what that means.)  And how is it only $98?  I literally rubbed my eyes to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.  Did they drop off the first digit there?  So run, don’t walk, to snap up your own.  The shape and colors are of-the-moment in an I’m-a-fashion-editor kind of way.
Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.34.09 PM Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.34.16 PM Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.34.22 PM
2.  Horn Tumblers ($75 for 2).
I’m a little late to the game here, but just started watching HBO’s GAME OF THRONES.  (Nerd, cough.)  And.  Obsessed.  Tell me I’m not alone here?  Kind of thinking I need some horn steins to guzzle mead out of while watching the rest of season 2.  Anyone else?
Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.38.16 PM3.  Letter Bracelet ($185).
Shifting gears to something a little less embarrassing, I’m smitten with these lettered gold bracelets, part of a designer collab between Bauble Bar and Maya Brenner.  (Maya is better known for her state necklaces — if you have some state pride to brandish, check this series out!)  I kind of want one for both my first initial and Mr. Magpie’s.
Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.40.37 PM Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.40.44 PMIf $185 is a little steep for this sort of accessory, check out these lettered necklaces from Gorjana ($50/pop).
4.  Script Blouse ($103).
And while we’re on the topic of the alphabet (a loose connection, at best), how funky-cool is this script-print blouse from Karl, on RIDIC sale for 70% off from Net-A-Porter?!
Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.48.58 PM
Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.49.08 PM
I can’t make out what it says on the shirt, but I hope it’s something snarky like “faute de mieux.”  (Ha.  It all comes full circle.)
5.  Two-Tone Clutch ($39).
I don’t know if you’re feeling clutched out after what feels like 34 consecutive seasons of non-stop clutching (?), but if you have room in your heart for these little guys ($39 but Gap has been running discounts for the past 2 weeks), the colors are really spot-on.
6.  Non-Seasonal Lust Item: Suno’s High Neck Patterned Dress ($595)
I know this is wretchedly inappropriate given that I’m excitedly awaiting for Christmas, but I saw this stunning dress from hot line SUNO NY (originally made famous by Kate Bosworth’s hippie chic look at Coachella a few years back, where she made quite a splash in a tie-dyed Suno number) and stopped dead in my tracks.  I need this.  End of story.
sunoThe color, the print, the neckline.  It’s just delicious perfection.  Sort of like a grown-up Lilly Pulitzer.
7.  Kaleidoscopic Print Sloafers ($155)
You may be exhausted with this trend as well (I’m sorta winding down on them myself), but the print on these puppies was too good not to showcase.  Love ‘em.  Imagine with #allblackeverything.
Screen Shot 2012-12-14 at 8.03.09 AMcp
8.  Foo Dogs ($58 for set)
Shifting gears, I love these fun little ceramic foo dogs.  I would use them as book-ends or maybe would separate them and have them live in different parts of my house — as decor on a bookshelf, on a mantel, on a coffee table atop a stack of books, proudly displaying a couple of my necklaces in my dressing room, etc.  Great colors, don’t you think?  I’m torn between the deep blue and the pristine white.
Tell me these aren’t the snuggliest, cheeriest little thangs you ever laid eyes on.  I snagged the melon-and-cream striped one earlier this season, and am regretting it since they’re now so cheap — $24 plus 30% off.  Perfect for pairing with cozy pajama bottoms on Christmas day, or beneath a puffer vest with some boyfriend jeans and funky flats.
10.  Painted Birdcages ($182)
I supposed I’m drawing some serious influence from Asian accent pieces, because in addition to the foo dogs above, I’m also swooning over these brightly colored pagoda birdcages.  Love how fanciful they are.  I can see them in a little girl’s room, as a big accent piece in the corner of the room.
Cuz We Like to Partayyyy
In Accessories, Bombshell, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Fur, Gifts!, Glitter on December 7, 2012 at 10:49 am
Have you heard the Beyonce slow jam “We Like to Party“?  If you haven’t, DL immediately, pour a glass of cognac, and enjoy.  But seriously, this jam should be playing on repeat right now for so many of my dearest girlfriends.  In the past two weeks alone, two of my best girlfriends got engaged, two of them secured new jobs, and one of them announced a pregnancy.  WHAT.  Something is in the air, and it’s called celebration time.  In their honor, some festive lookskis: first, this jacquard dress ($75), which is JUST my style.  Retro and perfect.  Eee!  {Also comes in a sequin fabrication, on sale now for $60.  New Year’s?!  Hello!}  Sport with a big chunky glittery necklace ($228):
Dreamy with these knock-out Pigalles (a casual $3,400) –
– and perhaps a fur collar (on sale for $229), a sparkly brooch (love the idea of bringing this old-school accessory back — $220), and a sequinned clutch ($95):
Now, going to the dark swan side of things — don’t even get me started on the awesomeness of this Milly frock ($640), especially with these spiked Fallon rocks ($150):
Kind of amazing with these disco-fab platforms (Chrissie Morris, on sale for $641):
Slam dunk.  Go high-wattage by adding a sequinned clutch ($90) — BAM!
Alternately, let’s drool over this feathered frock ($120 — NEED.)  Slick with some shoulder-grazing danglers ($95):
I like it with these fashion-forward/futuristic metallic booties ($995 — HOMIGOD, I love them), but if they scare the patchouli out of you, don’t panic.  I’d just as readily pair this with any ol black stiletto.
Finish with this bananas sculptural clutch from Judith Lieber’s new diffusion line, Overture ($495 — SWOON.  LOVELOVELOVE.)
Side note — my mother let me borrow her authentic crystal-encrusted Judith Lieber clutch on my wedding day, and I pretty much died and went to heaven.  Even though I didn’t actually hold it at all, I just felt better knowing it was mine for that day.  Swoon swoon swoon, dream come true, love, in heaven, OMG.
And I know we’re stretching a bit with today’s gifting guru, but…these crystal boxes ($68 for set) are such a fun little gift to give!  I can just imagine gifting them to a few of the divas in my life.
Happy weekend!
Mira, Mira on the Wall
Do you follow me on  Pinterest?  If you do, you’ll have noticed a slight grush (girl + crush) on Russian fashion plate Miroslava Duma.  She’s wildly eclectic and, despite her diminutive size, pulls off patterns and haute shapes with ease.  Check out her avant garde fashion blog, Buro 24/7 — LOTS of eye candy.
Also, I love her hair.  Kind of makes me want a slick, even-length bob.  But I think you need her bananas bone structure to pull it off with style.  Anyway, I’ve been trying to figure out what makes Miro tick in the fashion sense, but it’s a challenge — the sampling of looks above demonstrates her versatility: from ladylike cape and croc purse to playful floral jumper, and you should see some of her even wilder creations.  But I am going to put together some Mira-esque looks for my own personal enjoyment…first, we gotta begin with something bold, textured, and interestingly shaped: a pink cocoon coat (Gianluca Capannolo, $1,489) will do the trick.  She’d wear it with a huge necklace (Shourouk, $1,100 — and PSST: I received a special coupon code from the kind folks at Charm + Chain for 25% off EVERYTHING now through December 14th with code: CC25OFF!  Get shopping!):
Finish with some colorblocked heels (Brian Atwood, $915)
Another look very much up her alley?  This voluminous sweater-top-dress ($36) with an oversized medallion necklace ($635), a pair of lighter-washed, slightly-distressed jeans, and some funky heels (on SUPER sale for $88):
Finish with the McQueen Demanta clutch ($850) — you need something big and oversized to finish the look.
I can also very much see her in this Proenza Schouler number (loving the quilted collar detail — $1,150), with a statement necklace ($367) worn under the collar ($black tights and some ankle-breaking booties (Alaia, $1,878):
I can also envision her in this darling Marni dress ($1,000) with this BANANAS leopard necklace (I just MUST own it — $138):
A slam dunk with these platformed velvet and satin tootsies (Tory Burch, $425) with this limited edition DVF “sun circle clutch” (a piece of art — $995):
In closing, for our gifting guru item of the day…
…and though it’s a tad above our $50 goal, how Miroslava Duma is this Shourouk-esque necklace ($78)?!  Imagine it tucked neatly under the collar of a printed dress.  Ba.na.nas.
A Piece of (Art-)Work
In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Gifts!, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes on November 14, 2012 at 11:17 am
When I think back on some of my very favorite memories, so many of them have taken place in the presence of great art: in the Guggenheim Museum in Venice while studying abroad and feeling very independent for the first time in my life (I had chosen to split off from my traveling buddy to explore Venice on my own, and spent a good half-day ogling over the visual splendor housed in that villa on the channel); in Paris at Musee Marmottan with my parents, soaking up every last minute of their indulgent kindness before heading off to college for the first time; at the Frick in New York with my baby sister just after she’d moved up there and we were feeling very lucky to have a day of sisterhood; at the Phillips in D.C., where I interned for a summer and managed to smuggle some friends into a boozy after-hours event and wound up having the time of my life.  Today, I’m hoping to pay some modest homage to this trend by featuring some of the artful pieces I’ve seen cropping up all over the place — hand-painted items; brush-stroke prints; unique, artisanal patterns.
Let’s begin high-end, with this stunning horse pattern shirt ($836), which would look bananas with these expensive-looking drops ($100!), a wool mini (on sale for $125), and black tights:
Finish with these city slicker cap-toed booties (Alice and Olivia, $405) and a pebbled leather clutch (Clare Vivier, $157):
Also a huge fan of this funky artful printed blouse ($98), paired with this ginormous deco pendant (obsessed with this affordable find — Rachel Roy, $65).  This look would be fab with a simple pair of skinnies, but why not juju things up with some red Minnies ($70) and some simple black flats ($80)?
I’d finish with this textured “bubble” clutch (Phillip Lim, $325):
For something even bolder, check out this painted leather dress ($250), which reminds me, for some reason, of part of a Frida Kahlo painting.  Totally something fashion-plate Miroslava Duma would wear.  Finish with an emerald-esque necklace ($575 — OR check out J. Crew’s jewelry collection, which features lots of this color, as with this stunning necklace):
You’ll need to pair this look with the highest — and thus most haute couture — heels you can muster, like these Charlotte Olympias, which defy all logic ($895) and a artful clutch ($650):
As an aside, this snakeskin Balenciaga bag ($3,350) is mesmerizing and Jackson Pollack-esque…a true work of art!
Shifting gears/color-palettes, love the idea of an artfully-printed blouse (DVF, on super sale for $118) with this ah-mazing piece of horn jewelery ($385), skinnies, and almond snakeskin flats ($250):
Perfect for a day of shopping/art-browsing!  Could go well with this stunning clutch (love the clasp! — $850) in blue if you’re transitioning to evening-wear, but the black is so versatile…
Also liking the idea of pairing this brush-stroke print scarf ($185) with a pleated dress ($143)
Finish with these cheeky heels ($945)
This funky clutch (Morgan Parish, $220) might be the perfect cap to the look, if you’re not too afraid of matchy-matchy…otherwise, go with a simple black clutch.
Speaking of Morgan Parish, one of her other goodies makes the “Gifting Guru” corner today…
How darling are these funky little key-rings ($30)?!  A perfect stocking stuffer or gift for a co-worker, cousin, etc:
Drool.
In Accessories, Bombshell, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Fur, Intimates, Jewelry on November 2, 2012 at 10:45 am
Today, I am going to throw all caution to the wind and feature ridiculous, BANANAS, expensive, lust-worthy items.  Let’s live in the lap of luxury {in our imaginations} and play make believe that we are going from a high-profile job in the fashionindustry to an afternoon visiting your country home in horse country to a glam evening out.  First.  This coat ($850).  I just.  I can’t.  It’s too good.  So Hitchock Heroine in the glammest of ways.  LOVE.  Imagine with some pearl-and-stone earrings ($495) and a little peplum skirt ($72) for a real old-school bombshell look.  A dreamy workday outfit for someone in a high-fashion work environment…aka, .00001% of the population.
Perfect with some Louboutins and this D&G ladylike bag ($1,650):
And beneath that furry dream of a topper?  This BOMB.COM Erickson Beamon necklace slash work of art ($978):
I mean.  Yes.  Shifting gears: now that your work is done, you head out for an afternoon in the country (we’re talking Middleburg, VA — old school horse country) in this bananas wool cape from Ralph Lauren ($1,498) a pair of Hermes boots (dream — $2,475)
Ideal with a pair of fox-fur-trimmed gloves ($225) and this Ferragamo cross-body ($1,790):
Yes, darling.  And for evening?  This Oscar de La Renta-esque, gilded dress by GIG BRASIL ($660) with a pair of drops (Asha, $350):
Finish with these velvet Stella McCartney tootsies ($995), an Amanda Pearl roll clutch ($1,395), and maybe a cocktail ring or two for some fun ($350+)
Add a little rabbit fur capelet ($474), and you’re set –
Once back at home, you curl up in silk P.J.s ($435) and diamonds (yah…):
Don’t forget the sleeping mask ($26) and some cashmere slippers (on sale for $50!):
A girl can dream….but I really need that fur coat.  Like, yesterday.  I’d live, sleep, garden, cook, and clean in it.
Midnight
In Accessories, Black, Cocktail Dresses, Fierce, Fur, Jewelry, Shoes, Winter Weather on November 1, 2012 at 1:16 pm
As mentioned yesterday, I’ve been more and more attracted to a dark palette lately.  Navy, black, midnight, cobalt.  It’s all in the mix.  It feels edgy and downtown.  I LOVE the fashion-forward shape of this Carven dress ($750), and the midnight hue can’t be beat, especially glammed up with some gems from Dannijo ($345):
So retro-fab with these ah-mazing Kate Spade pumps (also on my Christmas list — $328):
P.S. – Saw these pumps on the bloggerina behind The Pink Peonies and fell in love.  I attended the same RewardStyle event she was headed to in NY, but our paths did not cross!  Or else I would have stared awkwardly/enviously at her shoes.  Wouldn’t it be to die with this fur topper (Versace, $5,175) and this BEYOND mirrored clutch from Judith Lieber’s new diffusion line ($495)?!
Love.love.love.  I’m also obsessing over the idea of a formal night out in this leg-baring Rebecca Taylor maxi skirt ($225) with a sleeveless blouse (on sale for $149, Joie), some eye-catching earrings (in.love — $78), and some platformed sandals from Miu Miu ($635):
Finish with a crystal-embellished clutch (DVF, $395) and some Alexis Bittar bangles ($225 and up)
I guess I’m in the mood to get dolled up, because this last look is also evening-appropriate: this unique dress ($395 — die over the shape and the fabrication.  Very Rachel Bilson) with these stunning sparkling drops (Suzanna Dai, $175):
Perfect with these bronzed YSLs (such a throwback, shape-wise, to the 90s — LOVE — $695) and this paillet
Alternately, consider this GLAM necklace (gush, gush, gush – $315) with a lace-detailed blouse ($38) and a full skirt ($360)
Meant to be worn with the Kate Spade “Latrice” (on sale for $220) in black and navy:
And perhaps this funky clutch ($,089) to finish?!
One last MUST MENTION: and Phillip Lim’s 31 Hour Bag in midnight blue ($750).  Delightful.
Almost to Friday!
Come and Go
In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Glitter, Jewelry, Nautical, Shoes on August 21, 2012 at 9:41 am
I know that neon will eventually lose its effervescence on the fashion scene — it’s the textbook flash-in-the-pan trend, and it’s already dwindling.  (Don’t fret — your mini magpies will one day l.o.v.e. your neon Cambridge Satchel when it comes back into vogue in another decade or two.)  I already see it being phased out in favor of richer, more royal hues for fall.  And yet.  There are still some pieces that flag my attention and make me sit up straight, happy that we’ve been enjoying this warm embrace of color.  I, for one, would still happily sport this citrine-and-nude concoction from Mason by Michelle ($530) –
It’d look pret-ty fantastic with a glitzy necklace ($138) –
– and some serious shoes: behold the holy grail, ladies.  5.5″ inches of sparkly Charlotte Olympia perfection ($975).  Swoon.
Alternately, how fun is this affordable glam slam of a necklace ($58!)?!  I like it with a minimalist white blouse ($188), white skinnies (not for long!  Labor Day is just around the bend…), and some patent sandals ($98):
Perfection with this tasseled clutch from Blair Ritchey ($85), which would easily make the transition to your fall wardrobe:
Other affordable neon necklace options?  One of these collar necklaces from T+J Designs ($42 apiece) –
Alternately, check out the goodies at Elm Elm or Love Obsessed on Etsy — both shops are brimming with bold baubles that you’ll flip over.  Or, this rip-off of the House of Harlow station necklace, available for only $39 (boo ya):
Or, go nautical/preppy with the neon look by sporting this rugby stripe tunic ($198) from Sail to Sable over a white bikini ($215) –
– and of course a beachy tote (LOVE Dermond Peterson’s designs!!! –must buy all of his prints!!! — $115) and some gold sandals ($44):
For in-home decorating, go big with this lovely armchair from Stella Dallas (oh, how I love faux bamboo…$750):
To die accented with one of these fun little leopard lumbars ($165):
Or, accent a side table with one of these neon-hued foo dog lamps ($535 for pair):
Amazing, eh?!  Finally, keep the look relatively low-key by reserving the neons for small pops in the kitchen.  Consider these wooden spoons from Nicole Porter Design ($25 for set of 6), or these painted wooden pinch bowls from Wind and Willow Home ($21 for set of 2):
Finally, this set of salad servers ($33).  Too good.  (Or pick from one of the other shades below.)
Anyone else still on board with this, or am I the last woman standing?!  P.S. My apologies for yesterday’s truly A.D.D post.  I was really a little scattered yesterday…
The Big Two.
In Accessories, Bombshell, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Romantic, Shoes on August 7, 2012 at 11:45 am
Two years ago today I married Mr. Magpie.  The entire day was a dream, so hazily and deliciously infused with happiness, love, and warmth.  I think back on it in the way you look out across a lake on a bright summer day and see glints of sun beaming off the wave breaks.  A shimmery surface above life-filled depths.
The engagement, the wedding, the honeymoon were all exclamation points — so thrilling, so dramatic, so romantic — and then came marriage, and it’s been the most deep and true thing I’ve ever experienced.  It defies any parse you might foist upon it.
The main ingredient to all of this is, of course, Mr. Magpie.  And though I feel that I could write an entire post about him and all the charisma and strength and intelligence that come so naturally to him, I will save y’all from a cheese-fest and instead just say: I love you, Mr. Magpie!  Cheers to two great years!
And now, we will delight in some bridal-inspired looks just perfect for commemorating the occasion.  First up: a lace housedress by Alice by Temperley ($570).  How darling and retro is this little guy?!  I’d wear it with a sparkly necklace ($135):
I’d finish with these twinkling tootsies (ah, a girl can dream — $775):
I’ll be greeting Mr. Magpie at the door all dolled up with a tray of champagne in hand (lucite tray — $39; coupes — $60 for set of 2):
Or check out the lucite trays from Etsy storefront Tilly Maison — love all the cute patterns!  I’ll be hanging this little banner from Etsy storefront Michie May ($25) above the door — just like mistletoe:
Alternately, I’m smitten with this pearly clustered necklace ($338), which would have made a fantastic rehearsal dinner piece, especially when layered over this glittering Gatsby-era dress by Alice + Olivia ($550):
Finish with some simple, strappy heels from Rupert Sanderson ($725) and this beyond fabulous shell clutch ($569) from hot handbag line Kayu:
You’d be the #1 stunna with that getup!  For day, I like this simple, boxy dress ($285) and a lovely blush stone necklace from Loren Hope ($140):
I’d finish with this monogrammed pouch/clutch from K. Slademade ($48!  What a steal!) and these metallic t-straps from the one and only K. Jacques ($240):
Finally, one last option — a breezy caftan ($150) with white jeans and these awesome studded Zanotti sandals ($595):
Perfect with these Iradj stunners ($345):
I’d ideally finish the look with one of these Sydney Evan love necklaces (swoon — $795 and up, depending on metal):
Oh, and this Alexander Wang tote in the yummiest shade of heather gray ($685):
Happy anniversary to us!  Mazel!  (? Been watching too much Andy Cohen, apparently!)
Guest Who?
In Accessories, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Florals, Intimates, Romantic, Shoes, Sundresses on May 16, 2012 at 11:16 am
OK, apologies for a) my absence the past few days {I was in Miami with Mr. Magpie} and b) the dumbest title for a blog post ever.  Let’s move right along.  I’m running this in response to many, many requests for a “What to Wear to a Summer Wedding” post — and I can totally commis(erate).  We’re finding ourselves smack dab in the middle of wedding season, and it’s time to develop a strategy for what to where to what.  First, some house rules:
1.  Never wear white, cream, or ivory to a wedding.  Bad manners.
2.  As a general proposition, I avoid lace at weddings.  Sort of an extension of the rule #1 — just avoid anything that might lead people to think that you are “upstaging the bride.”  (Or trying to.  Everyone knows there’s no one as beautiful as a bride on her wedding day.)
3.  If the dress code is not clear to you, always opt for a cocktail dress.  This is almost universally appropriate, even for more formal events that you might think merit a floor-length style.  You’d be surprised at the range of events you can attend with a sweet little cocktail number on!  Anything from a backyard wedding to a formal evening affair at a city club.  And, if you ever have any questions about what a dress code means, consult the master.
4.  Weddings are happy events.  Avoid black.
OK, item 4 isn’t really a rule so much as a strong suggestion, and I know it goes against every grain of our being as women.  I feel as though the LBD is the panacea to the woman’s every fashion woe.  I get it.  It’s slimming, it goes with pretty much any pair of shoes, and it tends to be highly versatile.  But at a wedding — even a formal one — it’s good to let yourself live a little and step out in color to suit the joyous occasion.  Also — let’s be honest.  Who stands out in an LBD, unless you’re Claudia Schiffer or something?
With those rules in place, let me begin with my top picks for this season: first up, I love the way that the maxi trend has enabled us to reimagine the floor-length dress.  Within the context of this trend, you can pull it off without looking like you’re trying to crash a royal ball in Austria.  So, I would strongly advocate the Rebecca Taylor corset dress ($475, Rebecca Taylor — also available in a splashy watermelon color here) with some stunning earrings (I know I just featured these, but they are too good — $138, Suzanna Dai):
{BTW, if you like the idea of the maxi dress but aren’t willing to shell out 500 big ones, check out this slightly less expensive ($350) Miguelina style, which I’ve had my eye on for awhile or this $260 French Connection style in lovely petal pink.  TDF.}  If you’re into the Rebecca M. style above, it would be perfect with these fairy princess shoes (Valentino, $995, Net-A-Porter) and a pleated chiffon clutch ($130, Bloomingdale’s):
For another soft look, consider this darling floral print dress ($250, Coggles) with topaz-centric danglers (Bounkit, $550, Charm and Chain — OR get the look for less with this $120 pair from Bauble Bar!):
I envision it with taupe or gray heels – this simple PLV pair would do the trick, though these Louboutins are pretty much the golden ticket to paradise, especially with this bow clutch ($35, AWear):
This would most definitely POP with a fun coral lip (Nars gloss, $24, Bloomingdale’s; YSL lipstick, $34, Nordstrom):
In a similar vein — but with a bit more color — check out these darling Thread floral print numbers ($222, TheOutnet):
And, P.S. — for you brides out there, the white version of the above dress would make a stunning rehearsal dinner score.  In fact, the entire Thread line is worth scoping out for all things wedding-related, whether you’re a bride, a guest, or a member of the bridal party!  Check out this linen seersucker number for a more casual seaside wedding, for example.  Love.  The above dresses would look adorable with a pair of white, ivory, nude, or blush sandals/pumps/etc.  Personally, I think white/ivory sandals can be super tricky.  Most of them look tacky and prom-like.  You could either spring for something expensive and showy, like these Zanotti wonders (WOW. – $750, Net-A-Porter), or go the easy route with a pair of nude or blush heels:
Keep additional add-ons to a minimum.  That fancy shoulder does all of the high-stepping for you.  I might add only a pair of cluster pearl earrings ($99, Max and Chloe) and a statement bracelet ($400, Mariam Haskell):
P.S. — for more statement pearl jewelry, check out the line Juliet and Company.  Love their affordable collection!  Another line I love for wedding guest attire?  Zimmermann.  I scored the loveliest nude/gold maxi from them that I’ve worn to three weddings (three! and I am usually terrible about re-wearing things.) with big statement earrings and bow-toe heels.  This royal blue style ($345, Shopbop) caught my eye as a little something different.  Perfect with some dazzling sparkly statement earrings (Elizabeth Cole, $232, Beauty):
{Like the dress but want options?  Consider this comparable $128 style; this similar-looking floor length variation (on sale for $139!); or yet another maxi-length style in this same cobalt/galaxy blue for $276.}  And P.S. – if those statement earrings are too dramatic for ya, check out this $130 Ben Amun style instead.  More wearable.  I like the dress above with the Kate Spade “Charm” in silver ($325, Bergdorf’s):
Too pricey?  Check out this $140 style instead.  Love.  And I kinda think this funky lip clutch would be a cool addition ($390, Lulu Guinness):
Now, if I had my pick of any dress on the planet to wear to a wedding, I’d blow my bank account on this stunning Notte by Marchesa style (even on sale, it’s out of my league — $752, MyTheresa):
Holy Mackerel.  If that were in my closet, I’d wear it every day of the week and twice on Tuesday.  Heart palpitations.  I’d pair with a bold red lip and simple heels and call it a day.  ALSO.  Don’t forget to enter my giveaway for a SPECIAL MAGPIE TREAT!  Just leave a comment on this post (thanks for all of your beautiful words of support!), and a winner will be announced TOMORROW.
A Quiet Birthday
In Accessories, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Glitter on May 10, 2012 at 12:56 pm
So, I’m not quite sure how I let this happen, but TheFashionMagpie turned three about a month ago (end of March) and the occasion passed by unremarked.  That’s no way to treat one of the loves of my life!  This little fashion blogeroo has taught me a lot about…a lot.  And a lot that is not fashion-related, surprisingly.  First, I’ve come to value the importance of “a room of one’s own,” in the abstract.  Virginia Woolf was onto something — having a creative space to hone your voice and opinions is truly life-giving and self-affirming.  Second, the power of self-conviction.  This blog has taught me to trust myself and my instincts more than any other enterprise I’ve undertaken.  Third, the absolute joy of aesthetically beautiful things.  Yes, fashion can be frivolous, and folks can take it far too seriously, but at the end of the day — why wouldn’t you surround yourself with beauty?!  It seems simple enough.  And finally, the warmth and goodness of others.  So many of you have written me the loveliest notes and kindest words — I’m humbled by it.  Bisoux to you all!
In the honor of TFM’s big 3-year bloggiversary, I’m concocting my dream outfit.  First: this stunning Giambattista Valli sheath (don’t even ask the price…) with an obligatory party hat and some sparkly danglers (Alexis Bittar, $275, Nordstrom) –
– and some flashy heels (Jimmy Choo, $950, Net-A-Porter) and this fun clutch — love how its geometry plays off of the lines of the dress above (Kotur, $650, Neiman Marcus):
I’d further accessorize with this sparkly camera strap (LOVE. — $120, Bloom Theory):
Now that I’m all (imaginatively) decked out, I’ll present my “Best of Year 2″ Highlights.
1.  The Purchase of “Alix”
My loyal readers know how much I died over the hectagonal, toffee-colored gorgeousness of the Alexander Wang Emile tote ($975, Kirna Zabete).  When I finally bought one, I affectionately named mine “Alix.”  (A very French name — pronounced “Ah-lee-kssss.)  This indulgence has brought me many a happy morning.
2.  Suzanna Dai Statement Earrings
I snapped up these beautiful “Rio de Janeiro” earrings ($138, Suzanna Dai) earlier this season, and they’ve quickly become my favorite member of the Magpie Jewelry Family.  They always draw a lot of attention, and they snazz up any old thing.  I’ve worn them with everything from floor-length evening gowns to jeans and a tee.  Love you.
3.  Corals and Peaches and Tangerines — OH MY.
I’ve been beyond ecstatic over the predominance of reds, peaches, corals, and tangerines that have graced many-a-storefront in the form of lovely and wearable separates over the past year.  Talk about a universally flattering color palette!  WOO!  Commemorate with the paint chip table runner ($55, Leif Shop — also available in placemat form) below:
 4.  Vibrant Work Out Gear
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: brightly colored gym gear is a huge exercise motivator.  Thank you, Nike, for giving me a little extra boost with your punchy running shoes ($90, Zappos).
 5.  Colored Denim
Yeehaw, I have been all.over.this.trend.  I’ve scored J. Brand jeans in tomato red, neon coral, cobalt, and now have my eye on a pastel pair.
6.  Peplum.
A new love, but a love nonetheless.  I’m so intrigued by this style that I’m inclined to go overboard…(Top, $49, H&M — similar here; skirt, Jason Wu, $2,165, Kirna Zabete):
7.  The Easy Reader
I would be lying if I didn’t profess what a small joy my Timex Easy Reader ($70, PiperLime) is on a daily basis.  I hadn’t worn a watch since I was maybe seven or eight years old — and then I found this cheapie Timex (Rachel Zoe and Olivia P. are also fans) and fell in love.
That is — until this upgrade replaces it.
8.  Neon, Neon.
I mean, it wouldn’t be 2011-2012 if I didn’t pay homage to this mega-trend.  I’ve invested in this trend quite a bit, favoring this citrine yellow hue or hot pink over all.  Love this Kate Spade tote ($328, Kate Spade) — but I snagged the iconic Cambridge Satchel ($155) in the same hue, and am happy with where I am with it.
9.  Diptyque
If the last year had a scent, it would be Diptyque’s Baies ($60 for candle).  I went bananas over this brand the past year, buying room fragrance, candles, body oil, and much more.
Love the scents, love the quality, love the packaging.  Done and done.
10.  Loubs.
I’m still head over red-soled heels for all things Louboutin, but especially for the incredible neons he rolled out this season.  I don’t own a pair, but I daydream about them every second.
In closing, THANK YOU for a fabulous year.  I’d like to give back by offering one lucky reader a SPECIAL MAGPIE SURPRISE!  Just leave a note on this blog post telling me what your favorite post this year has been, and I will randomly select and announce a winner next Thursday, 5/17!  You get two entries if you follow me on Pinterest.  XOXOXOXO!
Paris.
In Accessories, Black, Cocktail Dresses, Neutrals, Shoes on March 1, 2012 at 12:25 pm
Have I told you about my love affair with Paris?  I know, I know — every gal has a love affair with Paris at some point in her life.  But Paris — on two separate occasions — has felt like the very center of my life, the centrifugal force that kept various moving parts in balance and motion.  The first occasion took place just after I’d graduated from high school.  My loving and indulgent parents flew me to Paris for a week of art, cuisine, and extravagance.  They put me up in my own room at the Ritz {Place Vendome}, which — coming from a family with 5 kids — bowled me over.  Not only did I have my own room, but it was my own room at the Ritz.  When the staff wheeled in a breakfast cart that featured, amongst other delicacies, the most outrageously flavorful brioche sucree I’ve had in my life, and I laid there in my ginormous fluffy bed in my exquisitely appointed room with a window that looked out on Paris, preparing for a day at Versailles, I was quite certain that life would never be as good.  I’d peaked at the tender age of 17.  I floated around Paris for that week, wide-eyed and slack-jawed, taking in the sights and sounds of the most cultured place on earth.  It felt like my horizons were expanding by the second — whereas I’d previously only been privy to one narrow wedge of the landscape, I was now seeing a much broader vista.  That moment in my life felt like a hinge, a lynchpin — just before I was to fly the coop for college, while I was still in many ways just a girl who needed her parents’ direction and guidance.  Paris pushed me to adulthood.
{print by Jessica Durrant, available here for $25}
The second occasion took place three years later, while I was studying abroad in Lyon.  I actually loathed and despised my semester abroad.  I was painfully, achingly homesick, to the point where my father, after sitting on the phone to many a sob session, cut me off and said: “Jennifer, you are coming home.  I’m booking you a ticket tomorrow.  We’ll figure out the rest once you’re back.”  My stubborn and competitive doppelganger {named Jename — but I’ll save that story for a different post} arrived and dug her heels in, so I willfully and heart-wrenchingly committed to sticking it out.  I know this all sounds ridiculous and far-fetched.  Woe is me, I had to live in Lyon and eat the most amazing cuisine {Lyon is the gastronomic center of France} and guzzle amazing and cheap Cote de Rhone wine and travel Europe, all on my parents’ dime.  But I was so unhappy.  I cried myself to sleep every night, especially after discovering that our apartment was infested with mice that would crawl through the walls and eat every ounce of food in sight {it was such a problem that we had to hang our food in bags from the chandelier so the mice wouldn’t get to it}.  At any rate, my parents hopped across the pond to visit me and treated me to yet another extravagant multi-day stay in Paris.  I’ll never forget seeing my mother step out of the quaint French taxi in her floor-length mink coat after not seeing her for weeks and weeks {I talk to my mom almost every day}.  It was like coming home — pure relief.  Paris again marked some sort of renewal, rebirth.
Oh.  And did I mention the fashion in Paris?!  Paris also marked the beginning of a life-long love affair with style.  Paris women were just plain chic.  See below:
Um.  Can I be them?
The thread that ties these looks together?  Restraint.  As I learned then, the key to Parisian chic-ness was doing less.  A well-made blouse, tailored jeans, and simple heels.  Nothing flashy or over-patterned.  Clean and classic.  I just guest-blogged on Palm Beach Lately about a perfect Parisian lunch get-up — check it out here!  But below,  a couple of other key ways to achieve that Parisian chic vibe…
First, a simple white tank ($75, Net-A-Porter), black jeans, a salt and pepper collarless coat ($450, Barney’s),  and some fabulous booties (Zanotti, on sale for $588, Stylebop):
Finish with uber-chic shades (Thierry Lasry is all the rage right now — $385, Net-A-Porter) and a sophisticated and unfussy handbag (3.1 Philip Lim, $795, Shopbop)
The goal here is simple, clean separates/investment pieces.  Alternately, channel CLASSIC Chanel with this two-tone ladylike boucle dress (Moschino, $1,295, Net-A-Porter):
In the summer months, pair with unexpectedly dressed-down (and yet sleek) banded sandals (Michael Kors, $595, Neiman’s – or get the look for less with this $98 pair from Vince Camuto):
Meanwhile, these retro-chic horn-effect shades from hip line Super ($165, Swell) and a structured tote from high-end line Valextra seals the deal:
For a slightly more dressed-up affair {I think back with particularly fond memories of an indulgent lunch we had at Taillevent, by the Arc de Triomphe}, I’d sport a white blouse ($98, J. Crew), a serious collar necklace (these collar styles are all the rage right now $158, Dannijo — but if that terrifies you, consider this gemmed $145  Max & Chloe variation), and a simple pleated skirt ($350, Mulberry):
I’d finish with these INCROYABLE PVC pumps (Thierry Mugler, $1,225, Opening Ceremony)
I’d finish with a quilted handbag (this ASOS style is only $28! — but if you can swing it, the Real McCoy — a Chanel — would be ideal; alternately, consider this $595 Marc Jacobs style or this $148 Michael Kors version for something in between):
– AND, finally: hey!  you’re in Paris, so wear a romantic felt hat (DSquared, $225, Farfetch — or get the look for less with this $20 H&M style) and some serious shades (House of Harlow, $148, Shopbop):
Alternately, consider this simple white sheath ($520, Saks)
And finish with nude booties ($220, Lindestore):
The restraint is the hardest part — I’d want to add lots of bold jewels, but this will definitely set the tone.  Accent with some chic shades (Tom Ford is the creme de la creme for high-end eyewear; the style below is $360) and the always covetable Chloe Marcie ($1,995, Net-A-Porter):
In the evening, an LBD is in order.  This drapey Rachel Comey number ($516, Saks) pairs perfectly with these delicate sparkler drops ($29, Tallulah):
Turns ultra-chic with the addition of these platformed, tasseled heels (Rachel Zoe, $325, Shopbop):
Finish with the Alexander Wang Adriel clutch ($525, Net-A-Porter) and a deco cuff (KJL, $207, Max & Chloe):
This + That
FRIDAY!!!!  I’m so happy to see you!  It’s already a great day because this fantastic old school jam by Color Me Badd aired on the radio early this a.m., much to my delight and glee.  Just the thing to greet the weekend.  As per usual, I’m far too excited to roll out a carefully organized post, so I’ll just pass along what’s been striking my fancy for the past week.
Did anyone else tune in to see the dog show earlier this week?  It only exacerbated my puppy fever.  I need a dog.  Now.  Mr. Magpie and I have long been debating between the Welsh Terrier and the French Bulldog, but my main objective at the moment is just to add a little four-legged pupperoo to our life, whichever breed he prefers.  This goal has, of course, sent me on a variety of imaginary shopping excursions for our little pup.  How darling are these dog beds ($59-$79 depending on size, Harry Barker)?!
Also, how cute are these personalized dog prints ($9, Fire Hydrant Press)?!  Is it too early to order one?!  (We already have the name picked out!)
Just when I thought Chloe’s Marcie couldn’t be any more covetable, they created a version in downtown-chic denim.  ACK.  I can’t decide which I love more — the crossbody ($525), the shoulder bag ($1,325), or the large satchel ($2,265).  So.so.amazing.
I’m attending two birthday affairs this weekend, and heading to Vegas in just two weeks for my bestie’s bachelorette.  Suffice to say, I’ve got celebration on the brain, and I need some killer kicks.  Loving (!) these polka dot mules from — who else?! — Kate Spade ($328, Jildor):
Yeah, neon is still rocking out in my world.  I’ve been sporting either shocking pink from Illamasqua ($14, Sephora) or poppy orange-red (Tom Ford, $30, Bergdorf’s):
I was up in NYC this past weekend for what might have been the most hilarious + fun weekend of my life.  I got to attend a fab blogger event hosted by Currently Obsessed, Shopbop, and ASOS at the Soho House in NY, explore Chelsea Market {which was hosting a pop-up “Swamp People” exhibit with REAL alligators!  Who would have thought I’d see an alligator in Manhattan?!}, hit up the Rubins art museum {fascinating, especially the murals on the 3rd floor}, eat lots.of.delicious.food {including at Spice Market — incredible!}, go wine tasting, people watch at the Standard Biergarten, and — sort of my favorite pitstop of the weekend — hit up the Rusty Knot for post-dinner drinks.  This place is kitschy.  Half of it sort of looks like a waiting room in a dentist’s office, with an awkward small-scale fish-tank and a strange lined-upalong-the-wall chair arrangement.  But the crowd was awesome and unpretentious, which was semi-refreshing after the “I’m very important and beautiful” vibe I witnessed at the Standard {can’t say it wasn’t a deserved ‘tude — there were lots of beautiful and important people there!}  At any rate, the Rusty Knot had the most INCREDIBLE frozen drink called — you guessed it — the Rusty Knot.  My cousin called them “frozen mojitos,” and that’s about accurate — I tasted mint, limes, and rum.  DELIGHTFUL.
{When I recreate them, I need to serve them in these cheeky plastic cups — $38 for sleeve of 25, Monogram Goods.}
Speaking of citrus, these 11×14 letterpress designs by Sycamore Street Press ($35 each) caught my eye.  I think they’d make a fun little installation on a white kitchen wall.
Love the retro appeal.  And how cool that they’re letterpressed?!
My bestie and I have weekly “sninner” + trashy tv + wine nights.  {Sninner = snack dinner, or lots of little appetizers instead of an actual meal.}  I try to switch things up when I’m hosting {for Italian — caprese salad, crusty bread, and Italian charcuterie; other times, it’s Greek — hummus and pita, spanokopita from Trader Joe’s, dried fruits, and olives; still other times, it’s Spanish — marcona almonds, manchego cheese, chorizo, etc.}  But the one staple?  Cheese.  I have to have it for our weekly sninner because Mr. Magpie is not a huge fan of the fromage.  {He had a rough experience with Mac & Cheese as a child, and has been leery of it every since.  Strange, in a sense, because he’s the ultimate adventurous eater otherwise.}  For this reason, I’ve had my eye on this brightly-colored cheese server kit from L’Aguiole ($32, Anthropologie)
I’ve also got my eye on these ceramic cheese markers ($35 for set, Rain Collection):
Alternately, for another serving option: I recently saw a cute presentation for a cheese board — serve it on a chalkboard — and have been contemplating doing something similar.  Buy one here or take on the DIY challenge with instructions here.
{images from Wit & Whistle}
There’s no legitimate explanation for needing or wanting this camera ($90, ModCloth), but it’s cool.  Enough said.
…and not just any jewelry.  I’m all about pops of sapphire blue, like these Bounkit drops ($395, Charm & Chain) and this gumball stone bracelet ($45, J. Crew) as well as citrine/neon yellow ($24 for necklace, ColorBlockShop):
Finally, I really must own this hot pink mini from Robert Rodriguez ($395, Shopbop).  It’s a done deal.
The color!  The scalloped hem!  I die.  (And PSST.  I know I feature a lot of Diane von Furstenberg already, but please take a minute to check out the amazing color palette she’s made available this season.  DIE.
HAPPY WEEKEND!
Minty Minx
In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Shoes, Work Wear on February 15, 2012 at 4:11 pm
Not sure what the title above means, but let’s just say last night involved a lot of champagne and lobster, so I’m a little cloudy in this post-celebration, early-morning fog.
Mint has made itself right at home in the mainstream fashion color profile over the last couple of seasons, especially with 50s throwback and pastel trending so loudly on and off the runway.
Below, a few of my favorite minty fresh pieces.  First up: I mean, Chloe, get outta here with the perfect minimalism of this tote.  Too bad the price tag is maximalist ($2,650, Barney’s):
Instead, I’ll get the look with small, inexpensive add-ons, like this geometric necklace ($55, Hannah Zakari) –
Perfect with this mint green pair  of jeans (I’m all about colored denim at the moment — AG Jeans, $175, Calypso), a loose-weave sweater ($72, TopShop), and some mint-accented snakeskin flats ($36, TopShop):
Perfect with that J. Crew Biennial tote ($348, J. Crew):
Or, how much do you love a classic polka-dot dress ($225, Net-A-Porter):
Ideal with these MINT cap-toed heels (~$500, Colette) –
– and a navy worker-bee tote (DVF, $685, StyleBop):
Or, how rad would you look rocking some pink skinnies (J. Brand, on sale for $88, Shopbop) with these outrageously perfect Missoni peep-toes ($785, The Corner), a simple white blousy top ($17.95, H&M), and a big ol necklace ($300, Charm & Chain):
I’d finish with this Botkier tote ($395, Botkier):
I love this floral print dress ($210, Antik Batik), prominently featuring mint green, with a coordinating necklace ($18, Miss Selfridge’s):
I’d pair it with these nude wedges (Stuart Weitzman, $365, Endless):
I’d finish with this frosted green bowling bag ($53, ASOS)?  So funky and retro.
For a dressier occasion, consider Emmanuel Ungardo’s lace-adorned shift ($656, The Outnet) with Amanda Pearl tassel earrings ($125, Amanda Pearl):
Goes perfectly with those glittered Miu Miu t-straps — perfect, perfect evening shoes ($730, Net-A-Porter) — and a green-and-gold clutchski (Chloe, $1,395, Net-A-Porter):
Now, I know I’m jumping the gun with spring/summer pieces, but I just had to feature the perfect espadrille/wedge ($225, Vince Camuto) –
Also — anyone familiar with the line Antipodium?  I’d never heard about it, but am loving their shapes and styles — and they have a few key pieces in darling mint green.  Worth checking out!
The Little Lady Travels
In Accessories, Beauty Products, Cocktail Dresses, Florals, Jewelry, The Little Lady on February 7, 2012 at 12:39 pm
Those who have been reading TFM for awhile may remember a series a did a long while back — “The Little Lady” series, a cluster of posts about an imaginary version of myself with poise, elegance, and a Hitchock heroine vibe {see here, here, here, and here}.  Today, that series continues, in part inspired by yesterday’s Wanderlust post.  As I pieced together the looks, I kept itching to put together a few get-ups more closely akin to what Betty Draper packed when she traveled to Rome with Don, but they just didn’t fit with the contemporary looks I was gravitating towards yesterday. So today I want the full Jackie O.-on-vacation treatment.
First, check out this demure white travel dress (Moschino, $350, My Wardrobe) with some vintage-looking enorma-studs ($405, Net-A-Porter):
Divine with the Viv flat ($228, J. Crew) –
– and a seriously ladylike bag (Kate Spade, $525, Endless):
She travels in style with this ridiculously luxe rollaboard ($1,470, Lena Erziak) –
For day-time exploring, the Little Lady dons a tweed jacket (did I mention that she’s loaded?! — Oscar de la Renta, $1,800, Net-A-Porter), enorma-studs ($325, Vivre), a white bow-front blouse (Jason Wu, $560, Browns), skinnies, and the perfect nude flat ($250, Loeffler Randall):
A structured tote (Tory Burch, $550, Shopbop) finishes the look:
For a daytime shopping trip, how darling is this retro cut ($108, Modcloth), which I’d pair with these seashell-inspired earrings (I own this exact pair and get compliments on them all.the.time — $68, Juliet and Company):
I’d finish with classic Jack Rogers ($105, Zappos) and a boxy straw bag ($58, Espadrilles Etc):
Don’t forget the retro cat-eyes (Selima for J. Crew, $128, J. Crew) and camera ($109, Modcloth):
Now, this khaki shirt-dress (Miu Miu, $1,290, MyTheresa) is oh so Gwyneth Paltrow in”The Incredibly Talented Mr. Ripley,” and looks ravishing, dahling, with some enorma-studs (Bounkit, $320, Charm & Chain):
I’d finish with some bold bow-toed flats (~$300, Pretty Ballerinas) –
– and a pop of green in the form of this boxy Kate Spade cross-body ($445, Zappos):
And, finally, while on the topic of green, how to die is this floral-print ladylike dress ($247, Conifer Shop)?!  I’d pair it with pearls, pearls, and more pearls — and I love the Miriam Haskell collection, so I’d lay it on thick ($200 for earrings; $480 for necklace):
I’d finish with the classic Louboutin Pigalle ($625, Neiman’s) and a sleek green clutch (DVF, $415, Matches):
I need a getaway!
Persimmon Says
In Accessories, Beauty Products, Bombshell, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Glitter, Gym Gear, Jewelry, Romantic on January 30, 2012 at 11:15 am
You may have noticed that I’m kinda obsessed with J. Crew.  Their clothes are on-trend without being too fashion-forward; affordable {and everything eventually goes on sale if you wait long enough}; and, best of all, versatile.  I have many friends who own the same pieces but rock them in totally different ways.  And — their seasonal color palettes are to die.  I’m loving the “neon persimmon” hue of their genius colored skinnies ($108, J. Crew — although I’d probably opt for this comparable J. Brand style in coral), which I’d wear with a chambray button-down ($26, Old Navy — though my ideal style would be this $225 Vince variation) and a big coral necklace ($140, Loren Hope):
I’d finish with pewter bow-toe flats (~$235, Pretty Ballerinas) and this dove gray slouchy bag ($395, Botkier):
This lovely patterned scarf is the perfect accent piece (We Are Owls, $260, Les Nouvelles):
For a dressier occasion, how about a persimmon maxi skirt (obsessed with this new length — Halston Heritage, $425, Zappos) with a gray blouse (Marc Jacobs, $227, TheOutnet) and some gray drop earrings ($43, David Aubrey):
I’d finish with a clean white clutch ($257, Farfetch) and some unfussy gladiators (man oh man am I dreaming of warmer weather at the moment…Zanotti, $595, Forward Forward):
Alternately, check out this stunning formal-wear dress (Sara Berman, $290, TheOutnet) with some glitzy studs ($95, Max & Chloe):
Finish with glitzy pumps (Miu Miu, $730, Net-A-Porter) and a roll clutch (on super sale for $29, Nine West):
Hot.  Or, how about this simple persimmon shift (Tibi, $396, Bergdorf’s) with a colorful statement necklace ($66, David Aubrey):
I’d wear it with some python tootsies, and this Kate Spade style is my jam ($325, Endless) — as well as a roomy clutch in persimmon ($46, American Apparel):
Also loving this simple white shirt-dress ( on sale for $137, Conifer) with a longer-length necklace (on sale for $21, WeLikeFashion):
Wear with anything in the “neon coral” color from the current Proenza Schouler collection.  This pouchlette is lovely ($345, Proenza Schouler):
And a pair of bow-toe gray flats ($50, Modcloth):
Finally, why not juge up your workout gear with a cute new hoodie ($80, Nike), some gray leggings (“anthracite,” to be exact — $54, Nike)
And some new kicks ($85, Finish Line).  Yah, yah, yah, I know I’m a Nike snob — it’s the only workout gear that lasts…and lasts…and lasts.  The rest ends up tattered and raggedy looking.  And the colors are to die.
Cute with this Anya tote, eh ($295, Net-A-Porter)?  Love her cheeky little canvas totes.  I wear mine on the reg.
And finally!  DRUMROLL: another giveaway to perk up your Monday morning!  {They can be so rough.}  Today, the uber-kind lady behind Concierge Couture {Danielle! — and if you ever need styling counsel, please go to her!} and her sister, Beth Beattie, are offering one lucky reader a pair of these adorable arrow necklaces, which they designed together with their brother!  Just in time for Valentine’s Day!  All you have to do is leave a comment on this post telling me who you’d give your spare arrow to!  A winner will be announced this Thursday, so enter quickly!
Happy Happy
In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Cocktail Dresses, Fur, Glitter, Home Decor, Magpie Nest on January 2, 2012 at 12:48 pm
HAPPY 2012!  I have a good feeling about this year, although I can’t say 2011 was exactly a poor vintage — and if you have any hesitations about that comment, check out Google’s moving “2011 in Review” commercial, which oddly left me a little verklempt.  On a personal note, this year saw  number of exciting Magpie milestones — Magpie’s 1st Year Anniversary, dozens of giveaways, lots of new daily readers, and hundreds of new fashion discoveries.  Thank you, my little love bugs, for reading this indulgent little fashion diary — I’ve loved “meeting” so many of you in the comments section of this blog, over emails, and via Facebook and Twitter.  {Ritva, thank you for “liking” most everything I post — what a lovely affirmation.}  Today, on this last day of the Christmas holiday, I’m enjoying my daily cup courtesy of Mr. Magpie {I love you!}, writing thank-you notes, and obsessing over the Instagram app on my brand new iPhone 4S.  {What.what.  Mr. Magpie randomly took me to the Apple store this past Friday and treated me to a new phone!  I was beyond ecstatic.}  The camera is fantastic on it!  A few quick picks for your early 2012 viewing:
Some of my favorite recent indulgences — my Timex Easy Reader watch (they sold out in the black-and-gold, but here’s a chic python variation — $60, Piperlime), which I love so much and wear so frequently, that I had to buy the brown counterpart for my little sissy for Christmas; my YSL Rouge Pur Couture lipstick in color #13 ($30, Saks), and a darling little Rebecca Minkoff pouch one of my besties gifted me for Christmas.
Glitter and fur — the two coordinates of my New Year’s Eve get-up.  I wore this Parker dress, a cropped white fur coat (similar style on sale and available here from Halston Heritage), black Dolce Vita platforms (on sale for $74, Endless), and some black drop earrings.  {I found my earrings at Cusp — they have some fab, affordable statement pieces in their “house” line — but I really want these $53 tassel drops by Kenneth Jay Lane right now.}
A cluster of my favorite products — Chanel Coco Mademoiselle perfume ($106), Diptyque’s interior room spray in the Baies scent ($60), and Fresh’s Hesperides body lotion ($22) — perched on my dresser top.
A series of snaps from the Have Yourself a Merry Little Cocktail Party one of my besties and I threw.  It was a fab night, full of food and friends.  In the first picture, you’ll see a tray of eggnog, which was the true hit of the party.  I used this Martha Stewart recipe, which was relatively involved, but so worth the effort {and millions of calories}.  We served it in shot glasses {who wants a full cup of egg nog?} and garnished with mini candy canes which made them extra scrumptious, because the peppermint sort of melted into the foamy nog to create a boozy peppermint milkshake.  Yums.  In the second snap: my baby sis made her own gougeres {cheese puffs}, which were another big hit.  The perfect little holiday bite.  The last two snaps: treats from our spread, including {in the bottom picture} cranberry champagne punch and charcuterie.  Perfection.
The aftermath of New Year’s Eve: Mr. Magpie’s famous reubens {using Wagshals’ famous corned beef} and Bloody Marys.  We used the Charleston Mix I featured in a gift guide before Christmas {which found its way into Mr. Magpie’s stocking}, and it was scrumptious.  Spicy, herbacious, and not too chunky.  Delightful.  Sorry for the chaos going on in the background of the snap above — I was too hungry to finish my reuben to figure out a less cluttered photo backdrop.
And from cluttered to serene: my personal haven, our bedroom.  I love and live for the wall color, which soothes me into a peaceful mood.  The two botanical rose prints were a small victory for me — Mr. Magpie was none-too-pleased by the clear gender bias they telegraph, but he let me have my way and hang them above our bed in exchange for non-girly bedding {in a “platinum” color}.
Finally, the beginnings of my gallery wall: my Him and Her original canvas {thank you, Mr. Magpie!}, and, of course, a framed Inslee print.  Which brings me to the exclamation point on this post: THE WINNER OF THE INSLEE HAYNES PRINT GIVEAWAY!  I’m happy to announce that ANDERSON is the winner of the beautiful print below!  Anderson, hope this print cheers away your post-tonsil-removal blues!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
New Directions
In Accessories, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Glitter, Jewelry, Shoes on December 28, 2011 at 11:55 am
It’s almost a new year — time for reinvention, revision, rebirth.  And I, for one, love the feeling of a fresh start.  In the spirit of that adventurousness, I’m sharing a few discoveries I’ve made in the past few weeks — thing that intrigue me, things I love, things I’m inspired by, and all in a rumbly tumbly melange perfect for this slow holiday workweek.
At the repeated request of my lovely friend Alison Kenworthy, a talented local news reporter here in The District, I watched the fascinating documentary “Bill Cunningham NY,” an insider’s look at one of the most revered and prolific street style photographers in the world.  (As Anna Wintour, chief editor at Vogue, put it, “We all get dressed for Bill.”)  He still shoots and assembles the New York Times street style column, and he’s still #winning.  The film is a moving tribute to a man who has humbly and lovingly dedicated his life to his craft.  Something about the peculiar juxtaposition of his quiet, unassuming personality with the extravagance and flashiness of the fashion world that he records with such transparent glee strikes a deeply meaningful chord.
Yes, it’s definitely upon us.  And, lucky for us all, Shopbop is today featuring free overnight shipping for those of us who tend to procrastinate.  I just ordered this glittery lil number and am giddy with excitement.  In a similar last-minute predicament?  Check out lines Rory Beca or Shoshanna for glam NYE-appropriate numbers.  It’s a little late to be planning your own do, but — maybe next year, you can test out this adorable idea for an NYE bash invitation from bloglet You Are My Fave {discovered via Luella and June}!
{images via You Are My Fave}
This little confetti confection above reminds me of the company Confetti System, which is enjoying the limelight thanks to this month’s issue of Martha Stewart Living, which I pored over from cover to cover on the plane back from Florida a few days ago.  One of the articles featured a lovely party accented with all kinds of Confetti System goodies, including their lovely tassel garlands ($130 apiece, Confetti System):
They also have glitzy pinatas, which would be fun to fill with more confetti ($140 and up).  How could you NOT ring in the new year with style with those sorts of decorations?!  Equally as festive — these darling confetti pom-pom straws I spotted over on the Cupcakes and Cashmere bloglet.
{image via Cupcakes and Cashmere}
And speaking of the bubbly, Santa filled my stocking with lots of my favorite gummy candies and a bottle of pink champagne (Mirabelle Rose, available here) from the Schramsberg winery out in Napa.  Mr. Magpie and I popped the cork on Christmas evening, after spending a lovely couple of days with my family in FL and Christmas day with his parents.  It’s our Christmas tradition: drink champagne while watching “A Christmas Story” (his favorite — mine is “Home Alone”) and exchanging gifts.  The pink bubbly made it all the more special, because I know he’d done it just for little ol me.
I’m not sure whether it was just being in Florida {I saw none in real life, but…} or seeing them on a marathon of Planet Earth with my siblings, but when I saw this funky little photo print ($25-$5,000, depending on the size, TheAnimalPrintShop), I kind of knew I needed to add it to my gallery wall, which, thanks to my incredibly generous and thoughtful husband, is now off to a good start.  {He bought me an original canvas from the Him and Her Shop!}  Well, it’s a tie between either the photo below or this darling print from Etsy storefront Untitled Thread ($20 for 8×10).  And check out the name of the latter print — “All the Single Ladies.”  Love.
Since we’re talking pink, I should also mention that I am currently living for this day-glo pink tootsies from Brian Atwood ($595, Bergdorf’s).  Perfect for my bestie’s bachelorette bash, which I’m currently planning with the rest of the bridal party.  We’re doing VEGAS.  Woot woot.
While on the subject of footwear: don’t judge me, but I’ve been watching with interest the micro-trend of hi-fashion sneaks for the past few months.  I’m pretty sure I’m not leggy or model-off-duty-looking enough to pull them off, but then again, I thought for months that I wouldn’t be able to pull these off, but then, mid-season, went ahead and snagged them and haven’t looked back for a minute.  Not sure you’re buying it?  Check out Alessandra D’Ambrosio, Anne Hathaway, and Miranda Kerr.  How slick and fashion-forward do they look?!
I’m loving this Alexander Wang style (“The Dillon,” $385, Shopbop) — cool gal chic without being too intense.
Willing to try something bolder?  These Ash wedge hi-tops are pretty awesome ($225, Shopbop):
Um, do I even need to justify my obsession with the eye-catching glitterati above?!
#1: Earrings, $145, Doloris Petunia
#2: Necklace, $495, Samantha Wills
#3: Noir Jewelry Neon Knot Bracelet, $143, Shopbop {and while you’re ogling over it, check out the entire Noir Jewelry Collection.  Obsessed.}
#4: Shourouk Bracelet, $200, Net-A-Porter
#5: Gumball Stud Earrings, $24, Macys
#6: Neon Bib Necklace, $39, ColorBlockShop
Keep it all vibrant on this equally BRIGHT jewelry tray just for fun ($75, ShopFurbish):
While I was in FL, my baby sister whipped out a steamer {in true Parson’s grad fashion} and steamed her clothes before heading out for the day.  I learned that she’s saved a bundle on dry cleaning by investing in a steamer — she said that more often than not, her clothes aren’t “dirty,” just a little wrinkled or creased.  And a steamer is the perfect way to release those wrinkles and leave her garments looking good as new.  I rushed home and ordered my own mini steamer.  I’d read good things about the Joy Mangano for HSN model ($19-$44 depending on kit, HSN) in a Martha Stewart mag — and they come in such beautiful colors! — I snagged one immediately.
My Dad and I were reminiscing about favorite moments from my wedding over the Christmas holiday, and we both dwelt on the unexpected singing of the “Good Ol Song” (the University of Virginia’s fight song) just as Mr. Magpie and I were departing.  I had just thrown the bouquet and we were about to run down the dramatic stairs at my family’s country club to leave when all of the sudden, The Good Ol Song broke out, and we all stopped and sang it, including my Dad {’71}, my groom {’05}, and dozens of guests {all Wahoos}.  It was such a beautiful and unrehearsed way to pay tribute to the place where Mr. Magpie and I fell in love, and the song always gets us Virginians all riled up and ready to party {check this flash mob video out — UVA students singing the Good Ol Song in Clemons library, my old stomping ground.  It makes me want to stand up on my desk at work and start chanting/yelling.}, so it was the perfect “high” to leave on.  I miss you, Virginia.
**And lucky for us, The Good Ol Song is played to the tune of “Auld Lang Syne,” the traditional hymn sung on New Year’s Eve, so we’ll get to demonstrate our love of old Virginny then, too.  Also lucky for us: I found this ah-may-zing text-filled silhouette of the Old Dominion ($12, B and A Prints — and they have loads of other states, too!) that I gave to Mr. Magpie as a stocking stuffer.  Lovesies.
Fit for a Queen
In Accessories, Beauty Products, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Home Decor, Jewelry, Romantic, Shoes on December 8, 2011 at 11:03 am
Today, I’m loving the good ol’ pink and gold combo — that regal, queen-like combination that makes me feel oh-so-happy and oh-so-girly at the same time.  The onset of this sudden color craving can be attributed to Jen Ramos’ GORGEOUS wall canvas ($400, Cocoa & Hearts), which I so desperately want for my bedroom:
So visually appealing, n’est-ce pas?  I’ll recreate the look for less (or supplement the prints above) with gold and pink accent pieces in the home, like a pair of metallic thread pillows ($32 each, Crate & Barrel):
Then, atop a ladylike console ($1,200, Furbish), I’d place little pink and gold knick-knacks, like these awesome gold ball candles ($8.95 apiece, Crate and Barrel) and one of these pretty little glass-ettes (check out the awesome colors they come in!  SWOON! — $44, GlassyBaby):
I’d also add this pretty pink-printed tray ($20, Zhush) and fill it with little gold doo-dads and jewelry pieces — a gold pen (I’ve long wanted one of these Cross brand classics, $151, Amazon), a gold watch (I like almost every watch that Michael Kors puts out, but this jet-setter has been on my lust-list for years now — $250, Shopbop), gold flower earrings (Alex Monroe, on sale for $120, Net-A-Porter — I wear a similar style I snagged at J. Crew several times a week!), and other little gold trinkets (I’ve heard people collect gold keys, and I love that!):
I’d probably also throw a set of gold-lined cards ($18 for set of 8, Rifle Paper) on the table and stow stamps, pens, and paper clips alongside them in this shallow feather dish ($45, Jayson Home and Garden):
Finally, I’d keep business cards and other odds ‘n ends in this funky little camel pouch ($98, Virginia Johnson):
For technology needs, I’d store my iPad in this bold pink case ($50, Net-A-Porter), would juge up my drab desktop with a paisley pink mini-mouse ($18, MacBeth Collection), and would add a little 24 karat sparkle to my day with gold (!) earbuds ($69, SkullCandy):
I’d keep my iPhone in one of these awesome, personalizable cases ($60, Graphic Image):
Important: do you want one of the iPhone cases above?!  WELL, it’s your lucky day!  The fab folks over at GraphicImage will be gifting one lucky FashionMagpie reader with one of their iPhone cases!  All you need to do is leave a comment on this post describing/identifying the most important phone call you’ve ever had in your life.  Off-the-wall responses encouraged — I love hearing about y’all.  I’ll randomly select and announce a winner next Thursday, December 15th!  Also, if you could be a doll and like me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter, I will count your entry TWICE and will therefore — POOF — increase your odds of winning.  And — if you can’t wait until then — you can use coupon code GIFTS for 20% off your purchase starting today!
And — back to the subject: the interior of my desk and bureau drawers would look oh-so-lovely lined with this gold chevron liner ($25, Hammocks and High Tea), don’t you think?!  I’d feel like I was shopping whenever getting dressed!
For self, this HOT pink Vanessa Bruno topper is un.believable ($1,785, Matches), which would POP with a bright pink-red-white scarf ($195, Virginia Johnson):
Perfection with gold pumps ($98, Endless) and a woven tote (Anya Hindmarch, $1,200, Net-A-Porter):
Don’t forget to finish with a bold swipe of hot pink lipstick ($24, Kate Spade — love the packaging!):
Or, check out this fantastic gold jacket (Stella McCartney, $2,325, Net-A-Porter), which would look lovely against these cluster earrings ($70, Kendra Scott):
Ah-mazing with hot pink gloves ($87, Forzieri) and a hot pink clutch/wallet ($130, Net-A-Porter):
For a cocktail party out, do you d.i.e. like I do over this affordable gold thread strapless number ($105, Jane Norman), which I would pair with this ladylike necklace ($155, Kendra Scott):
Finish with these hot pink phenoms ($945, Barney’s) by — who else?! — Louboutin — and that bow clutch I’ve been swooning all over (on sale for $68, J. Crew):
If you prefer a lighter touch, why not pair a LGD (little gold dress) with this fun/funky little book clutch ($325, Kate Spade) and some soft pink tootsies (Sergio Rossi, $715, Intermix)?
Finally, and this is the real meat of the post — I just am dying over this hot pink Balenciaga bag ($1,695, Balenciaga).  It is so loud and impractical, it’s almost offensive.  But fab at the same time.  I’d wear it with these lovely, ladylike gold flats (on sale for $207, Loeffler Randall):
Don’t forget, chic peas — all you have to do to win one of those pretty little Graphic Image iPhone cases is to leave a comment on this post telling the story of your most important phone call you’ve ever made/received.  A winner will be announced next Thursday, December 15th.  And if you’d be a little sugar-plum, like me on Facebook or follow me on Twitta, and I’ll enter you TWICE into the running.  Woot woot.  Hello, Thursday!
Ooh la la!
Jingle Bell Rock
In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Bombshell, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Glitter, Jewelry, Shoes, Winter Weather on December 5, 2011 at 4:08 pm
One of my favorite moments in recent cinematic history has to be the Jingle Bell Rock performance from Mean Girls.  I mean.  Hilar.  I hope I can come up with some excuse to recreate that dance at some point in my life.  For the time being, however, I’ll just latch on to the song behind it and share a few sparkly, jingly-jangly pieces that have me thinking about the song all season long.
First — actual jingle bells, in the form of this festive wreath ($50, Williams-Sonoma).  Wouldn’t it be adorable on your door?!
I’ll take that as the inspiration point for the rest of the shimmery glimmery goodness below, starting with this outrageous shimmery number by D&G ($1,615, MyTheresa).  With something this high-wattage, all you need are some simple black pumps (Louboutin, $595, Saks), a black fur topper (this uber-luxe Maison Martin Margiela version is the stuff of dreams — on sale for $1,927, Net-A-Porter):
Woah, mama.  I would finish with a simple swipe of red lipstick (I love my YSL colors — $30, Saks) and false eyelashes (love the drama!  I use Laura Mercier’s kit for formal events, because they don’t look super trashy/fake and have just enough curl in them — $18, Sephora):
– oh, and a classic black clutch (sorry I’m breaking the bank today, but this classy bowed style has my heart — Valentino, $765, MyTheresa):
For something a bit more wallet-friendly, kick yourself into holiday gear with these sparkly nail lacquers (Essie’s “Pure Pearlfaction” and “Set in Stones” — $7, Amazon):
Or — consider glitzing up your LBD (the retro-styled number below is perfection; I’m very into volume these days — Kage, $591, Boutique1 — but this simple, slinky cut-out style by Rory Beca also caught my eye for holiday get-togethers) with these sparkly drops (remind me of snowflakes! — Erickson Beamon, $430, Net-A-Porter) and some glitzy tootsies (only $99! — check out the color selections at Piperlime and Amazon):
I’d cinch the waist with a silver bow-accented belt ($38, WHBM) and finish with this deco-style clutch (Moyna, $188, Nordstrom):
Check.plus.  I don’t know if I’m just lusting for the impossible after a weekend of high-glitz life in NYC {love the energy and style up there!}, but I’m also seriously coveting this pricy, embellished Farah Kahn number ($1,164, Farfetch), which I’d wear with these rocking danglers (Philippe Audibert, $130, Net-A-Porter):
Love the art deco vibe.  I’d finish with simple black pumps (D&G, on sale for $178, MyWardrobe) and a black box clutch.  My dream clutchski would be this Elie Saab wonder (love the glossy gold clasp — $912, Boutique1), but Kotur also has some eye-catching lovelies for about half the price!
Love.  In a serious, intense way.  Are you equally smitten, but could do without the price tag?  Get the art deco style for less with this clamshell clutch (on sale for $120, French Connection) and these sequinned pumps ($88, WHBM):
Now, I know I’ve been featuring SO many glitzy, glammy, glittery styles, so I hope you’ll bear with me while I swoon over one more — the Alice & Olivia Ritchie, which just went on sale at Saks (you’re welcome! — $330, Saks), which would look unbelievable with a pair of Janna Conner drops ($58, Max & Chloe) and a bold red topper (I am speechless at the sight of this bell-shaped Miu Miu style — $2,085, MyTheresa — but the J. Crew Double Cloth Metro coat is probably more realistic at $298…and equally eye-catching):
I’d wear it with these unexpected heels (the chunky heel made me pause for a minute, but they’re too fab to pass up — Louboutin, $1,195, Net-A-Porter) and a sleek and slender clutch (DVF, $540, Matches):
And, finally, two items I just want, period.  I’m sure I’d find a bajillion and one reasons.  First, the Alexander Wang Adriel clutch, which just went on sale at Barney’s ($289, Barney’s), and second, this futuristic-looking minimalista-chic cuff (34, Bauble Bar):
LOVE the holidays!  P.S. Girl Drama
In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Bombshell, Cocktail Dresses, Fierce, Glitter, Shoes on December 1, 2011 at 10:51 am
You’ll have to PTI (que?! sports reference?!  what is WRONG with me today?!), but I’m making a departure from my gift-giving series for the day.  I have one or two gift-giving posts for the upcoming week, but you’ll have to wait, because–true to form–girl drama is going to take precedence.
Let me explain: My father loves the phrase “girl drama.”  I think it’s his way of compartmentalizing the chaos that comes of a house full of girls (five girls, two boys in our family) and laughing at it — his way of categorizing and cordoning off “all that noise” into a tidy little two-word sum that rolls off the tongue.  He’s so tickled by the phrase that he named one of his racing horses “Girl Drama.”  (Imagine the announcers: “And…here comes-Girl-Drama-racing-around-the-bend…”)  For some reason, his affinity for the phrase is hilarious to me, because he is staid and seriously cerebral (his version of pleasure reading consists of tomes on the World Wars, biographies of Winston Churchill, and other seemingly dry reads).  It’s almost like imagining James Earl Jones using the phrase with glib abandon.  So wrong, and yet so endearing.  But, as much as the phrase reminds me of my father and his perception of our rumbly tumbly sisterhood, this post is not about girl drama in the cat-fight sense.  It’s about fashion drama — looks that make you go WOW.  Funky shapes, interesting textures, out-there styles — like this kickin Sass & Bide dress ($1,320, Net-A-Porter) with some magenta drops ($34, BaubleBar).  The feathers are O.O.C., and I live for it.  Borders, potentially dangerously, on the Michelle Kwan (can kind of see her flying around the ice with this on), but in all the right ways.
Perfection with platformed black velvet pumps ($87, Zappos) and a KAPOW clutchski ($88, J. Crew):
Finish with a swipe of fuschia lipstick (Tom Ford, $48, Berdgorf’s) and — for extra drama — Chanel’s Black Satin nailpolish ($25, Cusp — I know, I know, I’m a total BRIGHT polish devotee, but I recently, finally, tested out Essie’s “Carry On” and am kinda loving the darker hues):
Orrr, try it halvesies: a feather skirt (Milly, $385, Net-A-Porter) with a crisp white blazer (Robert Rodriguez, on sale for $150, TheOutnet) and a tangly pearl-and-crystal necklace ($195, Bicyclette Boutique) to affect the tuxedo look:
WOAH, dra-ma.  Love that stark winter white blazer against the frilly black bottom.  Hot-chi mama.  Finish with a gemmed clutch ($140, Moyna) and some intense platforms (Zanotti, $695, Barney’s):
Now, keeping in this dramatic palette, get ready to GASP at the amazing-ness of this gold-festooned skirt by Opening Ceremony (on sale for $169, Bergdorf’s), which I envision pairing with a dramatic black blouse ($230, Reiss — or, for the bolder out there, check out this sheer style by Equipment, which could be layered over a feminine cami) and a statement necklace, worn just under the collar ($60, Modcloth) alongside a pair of dark-glitter studs ($118, Alexandra Beth):
I’d finish with these intense (!) glittered peep-toes ($99, Nordstrom):
– and this fierce clutch (House of Harlow, $210, TrendBoutique), which reminds me of an Alexander McQueen style, but at a fraction of the price:
Or, add a little SPARKLE to your life with a dramatically draped blouse ($75, TopShop) paired with a pizzazzed up skirt (Haute Hippie, $695, Farfetch) and an awesome statement necklace ($365, Suzanna Dai) and coordinating studs ($27, Zappos):
Finish with some sick, uber-high heels (Elie Saab, $595, Boutique1):
And then, finish with a sparkly little clutchski ($128, Armani Exchange):
Finally — and this is a very non-Magpie look, but I’m kind of loving the idea: sparkly studs ($108, Charm & Chain), a simple nude blouse ($200, Stylebop), a bow necklace (cute take on a tuxedo, eh, eh?! — $165, Tarina Tarantino),  black cigarette pants ($79, J. Crew), and studded flats ($165, Solestruck):
Would look AWESOME beneath this feather cropped topper ($135, TopShop — or, if you want the Real Deal, check this Adrienne Landau coat out), and finished with this mini crossbody ($168, BCBG):
LOVE the glam, dark swan drama of it all.  This is DEFINITELY getting me geared up for my trip to NYC tomorrow (visiting my hilarious little sassy pants sis and her darling boyfriend, with Mr. Magpie in tow).  WOO WOO.  Love Thursdays that are actually Fridays.
Golden Girl
In Americana, Black, Bombshell, Cocktail Dresses, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Shoes, Winter Weather on November 22, 2011 at 12:20 pm
The other day, I was sifting through some of the items I’d dog-tagged for inclusion in future posts, and realized that almost half of my recent “picks” were black, gold, or some combo of the two.  Weird how you can find yourself subliminally gravitating towards something, inspired by who knows what?  Where does inspiration come from?  Too heavy a thought for this deary, oh-so-close-to-vacation Tuesday?  No worries — just settle into auto-pilot like I have and enjoy the gorgeous glimmering beauties below!
First: a little something-something for an upcoming holiday party: a simple LBD ($60, In Love with Fashion), which I’d pair with dramatic drops ($78, Raffine) –
– I’m eying these glitzy tootsies from Michael Kors ($175, Zappos), but if the gold scares you off, they’d be just as chic (and more versatile) in the black ($165):
I’d wear this with look with a funky little clutch in an interesting color or print.  Something like this Sondra Roberts style ($126, Sondra Roberts) would be ideal:
For more casual wear, I think a little daytime sparkle is in order over the holidays, especially in the form of this covetable sequinned, striped sweater ($118, J. Crew), which I’d pair with (surprise, surprise) a black statement necklace (love that J. Crew brought back their “bubble” style! — $150, J. Crew), black skinnies and some sloafers (still obsessing over these Charles Phillip styles…$135, Bloomingdale’s):
It would look fantastically chic with the Proenza Schouler PS11 clutch ($975, Net-A-Porter) and this patterned shawl-collar topper (Rory Becca, $247, Shopbop):
Finally, I just recently snagged (and am ga-ga over) this inexpensive black-and-gold watch ($60, Piperlime), which I would most definitely pair with the above look, in addition to a simple gold ring ($32, BaubleBar):
Or, for something a bit dressier, I’m loving the shape of this Parker dress in classic, silky black ($275, Eve’s Apple), which I’d couple with this “cascade” necklace ($162, Bauble Bar):
I’d remove the black belt provided and replace with this eye-catching gold-accented style ($48, BCBG) and pair the look with these gold and black ankle-strap wedges (on sale for $236, MyMu) and this Marc by Marc Jacobs panther clutch ($328, Saks):
This eye-catching gold-lined jacket would be perfection atop it all (on sale for $301, Built by Wendy) — what a statement!:
The above coat would also look perfect over this jacquard Tibi number ($420, Net-A-Porter), which I’d style with a big black necklace ($60, Max and Chloe), black tights, and some serious platforms (wowza — Charlotte Olympia, $895, Bergdorf Goodman):
For a more refined affair (with parents/grandparents/parents in law in tow), this classy little number is the perfect blend of sophistication and sexiness (on sale for $250, LKBennett).  I’d wear with sparkly drops (Anton Heunis, $300, LesPommettes)
And imagine the BANG you’d make finishing with these gold-tipped Louboutins ($675, Bergdorf’s…and a few more sizes here, at Net-A-Porter), this beyond adorable DVF clutch (available for preorder — $495, Intermix), and a fur scarf ($235, Net-A-Porter):
And, while I’m much more inclined towards dresses for dressier occasions, I am loving this metallic-striped top from Rachel Zoe ($275, Saks), which I’d style with shoulder-grazing tassel earrings ($22, ASOS — and I’ve also had my eye on this $88 pair by Soo Inh Kim), black jeans (or, if you dare, black leather or waxed pants — ooh la la!  I’ve seen some serious fashionistas rocking the leather pants in a major way, but I’m kinda terrified…), and some glam booties (woah, gold heel — $296, Reiss):
If those boots terrify you, check them out in pump form ($288) instead or swap in some platformed black suede/velvet pumps.  Alternately, if you’re digging the shoes above but want something a bit more refined, check out these sleek Tabitha Simmons!  I’d love to finish the look with this bow-accented Louboutin purse ($1,595, Net-A-Porter…TDF.):
Glam.  Love being a golden gal.
Opulence
In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Bombshell, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Fur, Glitter, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes, Winter Weather on November 15, 2011 at 11:15 am
Despite yesterday’s “frugal fanny” theme, during this holiday season, all I want is luxe, opulent pieces in interesting, rich textures like satin, velvet, and silk.  Bring on the gem tones.  For example, I d.i.e. and go to heaven when I look at this silver brocade design by Rochas.  Then, I d.i.e and go to hell when I look at the price tag ($2,145, Barney’s).  I’d wear it with sparkling ruby drops ($430, Bounkit):
I’d offset it with a red bow clutch (Furla, $215, House of Frasier) and some bold ruby red satin slippers (I mean…I die — Kate Spade, $298, Zappos):
And finish it all off with some faux cils and a swipe of red lipstick.  For another rich-looking brocade style, how about this Cynthia Rowley number (love the structure — $395, Cynthia Rowley) coupled with these decadent danglers ($150, Flannels)?
I’d finish with this gorgeous green velvet tootsies (Gucci, $755, Bluefly):
A glittering gold box clutch seals the deal ($199, Henri Bendel):
When I was searching for a cocktail dress to wear to my upcoming annual “Have Yourself a Merry Little Cocktail” party, I was immediately drawn to this eye-catching gold-on-black style by Pleasure Doing Business ($385, Revolve Clothing — although more sizes are available at Urban Outfitters, where it costs $439 for some reason…) — a dead-ringer for an Oscar de la Renta style…me likey:
I’d pair this structured wonder with this pleated bow clutch ($225, Sondra Roberts) and some lace heels (l.o.v.e. — $69, Zappos):
However, I ended up going with this simple, festive, silky little Naven dress in cranberry ($242, Revolve Clothing), which I’ll accent with a bold, glittery statement necklace ($298, Henri Bendel) and my cropped white fur topper, which I finally got to wear for the first time while up in NYC last weekend (Adrienne Landau, $695, Neiman’s):
I’ll finish with some bold tootsies — I wish I could afford these velveteen beauties by Erdem ($705, MyTheresa):
…but I think I will probably end up with these J. Crew sparklers ($228, J. Crew) in the red glitter, for a little tone-on-tone action.  SUH-WOON.
As my bestie pointed out, these would also make a lovely addition to a Dorothy costume for next Halloween…for something just as luxe but a little…racier/more bombshell, check this out: a lacy dolman sleeve top ($78, Nordstrom — loving that price!), paired with a full skirted number (gosh, I’m really digging volume right now — RED Valentino, $295, Net-A-Porter) and a gem-encrusted pendant (O.M.G. — Lanvin, $2,975, Barney’s):
I’d finish with the classic YSL Trib Toos in gold and black ($795, Bluefly), even though I kind of feel like the fashion world is SO over them.  But they really would be the perfect counterpoint to the volume of the outfit above and the luxeness of the necklace.
I’d tie it all up with this adorable satin bow clutch ($88, J. Crew) and throw a magenta/burgundy-hued fur around the collar ($295, Intermix):
Oh, and the only other thing I’m DEF going to test out this holiday season?!  Glittery nailpolish (Deborah Lippmann, $18, Zappos).  I’m not sure I like it layered over other colors (a little gaudy), but just on a nude nail?  So glam.
OK, that’s it.  I gotta get back to listening to my custom Christmas playlist on Spotify.  (Yep, once November rolled around, I was ready to deck the halls and rock out to a little Mariah Carey “All I Want for Christmas.)
La Vie en Rose
In Accessories, Bombshell, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Fierce, Glitter, Jewelry, Romantic on October 5, 2011 at 11:52 am
Though a recent convert to the rose gold jewelry cult, I’m now an avid advocate/practitioner.  Just take a look at all the goodies below, beginning with this elegant work outfit: a silky bow-front blouse ($185, Calypso) tucked into a classic black pencil skirt and paired with some classic two-tone pumps ($325, Kate Spade):
Finish with this seriously lust-worthy charcoal-on-rose gold watch (no really, I must find a way to own this…I DIE over it — $180, Neiman Marcus) and some mirrored rose gold studs ($48, Zappos):
And tote around this ah-mazing python-print crossbody (Derek Lam, $890, Barney’s):
Swoon.  For dressier occasions, have we got some eye candy in store for us: picture yourself in this gorgeous cocktail dress ($636, MyWardrobe) and a pair of danglers ($190, Charm&Chain):
Finish with these sequin-adorned Valentino tootsies ($1,095, Net-A-Porter) and a glittered clutch (Anya Hindmarch, $395, Net-A-Porter):
And — why not?! — a stack of stone-embellished rose gold bangles ($98, HenriBendel):
Alternately, consider this Phillip Lim shift ($1,031, MyWardrobe) with some glitzy studs ($95, Max & Chloe):
Finish with this darling steal of a clutch ($46, Oasis), a ladylike, evening-appropriate watch finished in rose gold ($125, Endless), and some drool-worthy bow-adorned peep-toes (Valentino, $1,195, Net-A-Porter):
For something a bit less formal, consider this gorgeous lace dolman-sleeve blouse ($196, Shopbop) with black skinnies, a pair of rose gold heart-shaped studs ($275, Ylang23), and some glitzy flats ($175, Pretty Ballerinas):
Finish with rose-gold accents, like this “Love” bracelet (do you not LOVE this?!  Perfect anniversary/Valentine’s Day gift!, and the thread comes in all different colors — $275, Max & Chloe), a simple rose gold bangle ($88, Henri Bendel), and a bubble ring ($88, Sarah Chloe):
Alternately, consider this pink bow-front blouse ($350, StyleBop) with a drape-front leather jacket (see?!  still obsessed with the leather — and I like the way it toughens up the rose looks I’ve been featuring — Sarah Berman, on sale for $335, TheOutnet):
Finish with this un.be.liev.a.ble clutch (Alexander Wang, $525, Barney’s) and a rose gold signet ring ($109, Sarah Chloe):
Alternately, pair this black leather sheath (also featured yesterday — $270, The Outnet) and these ba.na.nas Brian Atwood pumps ($595, Saks):
This fierce rose-gold cuff is all the accoutrement you need ($58, Nordstrom) –
That and (indulge me) the Alexander Wang Emile tote (I like the contrast of the soft gray wool with the shiny accents and black leather — $845, Shopbop):
Finally, how about a blush blazer (on sale for $166, MyWardrobe) –
– atop a white boatneck blouse ($245, Satine) paired with some serious gems ($78, Banana Republic) and some simple, slim-fit black pants (like the J. Crew Minnie, $168, J. Crew):
If you dare, finish with these major studded Valentino flats (FIERCE — $795, Net-A-Porter) — and if not, a simple pair of nude or black flats should do the trick –
Top it all off with a rose-gold watch ($250, Shopbop) and this little Alexander Wang tote (interesting/semi-awkward shape, but I like the boxiness of it — on sale for $290, TheOutnet):
Everything is coming up roses…!
Bombshell
In Accessories, Beauty Products, Bombshell, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Glitter, Intimates, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Romantic, Shoes, Sleepwear/Loungewear, The Little Lady on August 2, 2011 at 12:29 pm
One of my college roommates at UVA was an itty-bitty Southern belle from rural Tennessee.  She had a heavy Southern drawl (she found ways to add extra syllables to typically mono-syllabic words), was highly attuned to social proprieties (I can recall the looks of silent disgust that would creep across her perfect, tiny little face when someone would say something out of turn or off-color), and, though she often waltzed around in cowboy boots and jeans, bonded with me over our girlish sensibilities.  She took to calling me “bombsh” — an abbreviation for Bombshell — and I can still hear her feisty little voice calling up the stairs to my bedroom: “Bawwwwm-shuh?”  To this day, I think of her whenever I’m feeling a bit…undone, and need a “Bombshell Moment.”  And though she gave me this “Bombshell Manual of Style” ($12.89, Amazon) at some point in our undergrad careers, I take my bombshell cues from the mother-lode: Vogue.  Recently, I tagged all of the pictures from a phenomenal spread that Vogue Espana put out, and cannot stop drooling over the pics:
It makes me want to get all decked out for the night in something like this bombshell-worthy glittery asymmetrical number (per.fect. for NYE or a Vegas affair — $180, TheOutnet):
I mean — do we die!?  I’d pair with sparkling studs to up the ante ($138, Elizabeth Cole), red lipstick (go for the ultra-glam with Tom Ford’s new line of cosmetics — even the package makes you feel special! — $45, Bergdorf Goodman), and some gold, strappy heels (I know I’ve featured these badboys like 349823 times, but they are perfect — more interesting than your run-of-the-mill strappy gold sandal, but still simple enough to keep everyone’s eyes on the prize…i.e., on your dress — $795, Rupert Sanderson)
With an outfit like that, you’ve GOT to pop some bubbly ($51, Wine Anthology) and sip it out of a classic bombshell coupe (LOVE that these say “Mr” and “Mrs” on the side — what a cute engagement gift! — $80, KateSpade):
As mentioned yesterday in the {magpie covets} section, I’m dying over the new Rachel Zoe collection that is now available via Shopbop — I can’t get her white tiered gown ($595) out of my head.  I’d wear that, or this similar stark white, drop-dead gorgeous gown by Halston Heritage ($695, Net-A-Porter) with these TDF vintage-style agate earrings (would make great statement wedding-day earrings, too — $285, Bounkit):
I’d finish with red lips, this beaded box clutch (Moyna, $230, LesPommettes), and some gray-silver t-straps (love the slightly deco feel of these shoesies — Ralph Lauren, $650, Net-A-Porter):
DIE.  A bold, wine-red mani (“Lady Is a Tramp” — $16, Deborah Lippmann) and some faux cils are musts for these go-glam-or-go-home get-ups:
Don’t forget the Veronica Lake style hair…Now, if you’re like me, and occasions for black tie wear tend NOT to crop up on a weekly basis, there are loads of other ways to amp up the bombshell factor in your life.  For one thing: pull out your most luminous separates, whether that means a silky pearlescent bathrobe; a pair of glittered flats; or a floaty, metallic-thread top.  For example, how luxe would you feel shelving your go-to going-out-look in favor of this poncho-style topper (Gold Hawk, $180, LesPommettes) paired with white shorts (Theory, $160, Net-A-Porter) and some hammered gold drops (KJL, $45, Charm&Chain):
A pair of uber-covetable, sky-high heels in pale pink (Pelle Moda, $144, Nordstrom — I own this exact pair in black suede and cannot WAIT to wear them with black tights and tidy shift dresses in the winter) lengthen the leg and seal the deal:
Finish it all off with a stack of mixed-media bangles ($45, Nordstrom) and a statement-making clutch ($900+, Torregrossa):
If you’re entertaining at home, serve cocktails in vintage-style, gold-accent highballs ($125, ChicShopLA) –
I’ve been into Greyhounds lately (vodka + sparkling grapefruit juice) — they’d look refreshing in the above glasses, especially “jujed” up with some kitschy swizzle sticks (love the pink flamingos — $4.95 for 24, Kegworks):
Serve poolside on a gold tray in your own gold bombshell bikini (Melissa Odabash, $170, Net-A-Porter):
Don’t forget some fierce black shades (Prada, $290, Net-A-Porter), a vintage striped pool umbrella, and a monogrammed towel (this one from Leontine Linens):
Bombshell it up!!!  And while you’re at it, don’t forget to enter my giveaway for a personalized date planner for 2012 (see yesterday’s post for details)…how glam would you feel sitting at your desk with one of those monogrammed planners and some glitzy silver pencils ($11 for set, CursiveNY)?!
Garden Party
In Beauty Products, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Florals, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Romantic on July 14, 2011 at 1:19 pm
I’ve spotted so many lovely, oversized floral prints in stores and on runways {ahem, ERDEM — I want to own everything they’ve put out!} recently — and I, for one, am definitely stopping to smell the roses…
{Erdem on the runway}
{Flowy florals on the D&G 2011 runway}
{More Erdem}
First up: I’m oddly drawn to this semi-garish yellow-green hue in the top below (Joie, $184, Thistle Clover), especially against that geranium orange-red I die over these days.  Do you love this little top paired with a statement necklace (Gilda, $485, LesPommettes), white jeans, and a pair of neutral flats accented with pop-o-red bows (saw these in person at Sassanova on Sunday, and they are TDF — Maloles, $250, Cult Status):
I’d finish with that Chloe Marcie bag ($1,995, Net-A-Porter) I’m still droning on about — do you not love it in this milky white shade?!  {Dream on, sister.}
For work, how about this charming paper bag waist skirt (Alice by Temperley, $96, TheOutnet), paired with a lady-like Equipment blouse (also love it in the coral and poppy hues — $208, Shopbop):
Finish with some unfussy black patent pumps to give it that I-mean-business edge (my Louboutins are my go-to — $595, Net-A-Porter) –
– and a ladylike bag ($695, Gryson), stuffed with all of your essentials (iPhone; Fresh’s Sugar Rose Lip Balm — uhhh, addicted; L’Occitane mini hand cream; etc):
Also strongly drawn to this little ladylike frock by Wren ($319, ShopWren), which could be perfectly toughened up with an dramatic necklace ($173, Janna Conner) and some chunky shoes (I die over these — and check them out in all of their cool color combos! — $355, Bec & Bridge):
A ladylike, be-tasseled tote (Anya Hindmarch, $1,595, Net-A-Porter) is the perfect finishing touch:
Alternately, channel Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific, who is certainly blossoming with the oversized floral trend, with a floral blouse (check out Equipment’s rosy take on the trend, while you’re at it):
{image from Atlantic-Pacific}
Consider, for example, coupling a ladylike floral blouse ($168, Rebecca Minkoff) with white skinnies (or red ones, if you are into bolder color profiles!), and basic brown ballets ($135, Matt Bernson):
I like the practicality of those brown flats against the lively top.  Nice earthiness.  I’d finish with my go-to shades (Elizabeth & James, $155, Shopbop), and a lil clutch (love how this Christopher Kane style mimics the roses of the blouse — $530, Net-A-Porter):
Now, if you’re of the bolder fashion variety, you might consider a simple white lace dress (this one is by Lover, but appears to have sold out — there are lots of comparable options available this season, though, including this affordable BBDakota style and this Shoshanna variation), spruced up with a statement necklace ($268, Amanda Pearl) and some seriously funky floral tootsies (Jil Sander, on sale for $346, Ssense):
I’d finish with a BRIGHT clutch (love all of the colors below — $69, Zara) for the full-on BRIGHTS effect (wow.):
That last clutch would look UH-MAY-ZING with this hydrangea-print shirt-dress (Karen Walker, on sale for $130, Glassworks Studios), spruced up with this eye-catching ribbon necklace ($1,334, Mawi):
I’d finish with polished black patent flats (very Audrey — $295, Loeffler Randall):
Or, if you’ve the means, go whole hog with Erdem itself — consider this right-off-the-runway dress (on sale for $865, MyTheresa):
Per.fect. with these ankle-breaking Charlotte Olympias (love how they bring the floral into the 21st century with their modern silhouette — on sale for $499, Charlotte Olympia)
I don’t know that I’d anything else, although this Kotur clutch (in the neutral or purple) are enticing…
Not sure you’re ready to embrace the full bouquet?  Try just a touch with these Bec & Bridge pumps (paired with a simple white dress or your go-t0 jeans and white tee — $355, Bec and Bridge):
Or consider one of these roomy totes (perfect overnight bags — Longchamps, on sale for $214, Nordstrom):
Full bloom.
Ba-Da-Bing, Ba-Da-Boom
In Accessories, Beauty Products, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Glitter, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes on July 11, 2011 at 2:25 pm
This summer has been among the most festive in recent memories…ahem, with the notable exception of the unforgettable bashes of last year’s wedding festivities, which will forever miniaturize all other BIG summers to come.  I’ve enjoyed a lavish birthday weekend, thrown an engagement party for my bestie, and enjoyed lots of champagne brunches and so forth.  This makes me want to sparkle & shine like none other.  I’m talking major bling, like these phuh-nom-uh-nal drop earrings ($500, Melinda Maria) and these makes-me-happy deco-style clutch (all that glitters IS gold, in my eyes — $120, Zhush):
And, you know, some glitzy lil tootsies (I own these in the multi-color sparkle and I d.i.e. over them.  They may or may not require sunglasses when worn in side.  — $325, Kate Spade):
And can you imagine the splash you’d make in this boxy be-sequinned top (Vince, $295, PiperLime), which I’d wear as an unexpected combo for an evening out with some white skinnies (or if you dare, white shorts) –
I’d finish with heels in a dusty rose color (Rupert Sanderson, on sale for $288, Boutique1) — it grounds the look a bit — and this studded clutch (on sale for $598, Giuseppe Zanotti):
I’d wear my hear in a low, loose ponytail and add some faux cils (Laura Mercier has some good, relatively natural-looking ones — $18, Sephora) and a swipe of gloss ($28, Chanel) –
Finally, I’d finish by throwing on a stack of mixed metal be-sparkled bangles ($58, Nordstrom):
While on the subject of jewelry, do we not obsess over these tough-meets-girly bow earrings ($200, Fallon)?  Ideal with a little white-based metallic dress (Tibi, $376, MyWardrobe) –
I’d finish with some gold, glittery sandals (these gladiators are fuh-yeeerce — Casadei, $970, Farfetch) and a pop-o-red clutch (on sale for $59, J. Crew):
And, if I can work up the gumption, I would finish with a bold coral lip (I’ve heard people swooning over Tom Ford’s ridiculously priced lipsticks, and…kinda want one.  They’re packaged so glamorously! — Tom Ford’s “True Coral,” $45, Neiman’s) and matching nails (Essie’s Geranium, $4.95, Amazon):
As an alternative, I’ve had my eye on this little glitterati number by Alice and Olivia for an upcoming trip to VEGAS (woo woo woo — on sale for $346, Shopbop), which I’d pair with these awesome danglers my Miguel Ases (they look like they were made for the frock — $240, Ylang23):
I’d keep things light with a pair of blush/nude pumps, and these patent peep toes are right on the money ($195, FootCandyShoes) and a bronze envelope clutch (YSL, on sale for $486, Ssense):
If you’re more of a silver gal, I’m head over heels over this asymmetrical number by AllSaints (l.o.v.e. the twisted fabric on the shoulder — $549, AllSaints) with these Alexis Bittar earrings ($225, AlexisBittar):
I’d finish with some pale pink tootsies — something like these Nicholas Kirkwoods (on sale for $395, Kirna Zabete):
For a little somethin’ special, consider layering these two sparkling link necklaces ($55 apiece, Nathan and Moe) atop of one another in order to spruce up your lather-rinse-repeat LBD:
And…because you know I can’t resist a glittery Louboutin, can we just take a gander at these bank-breaking heels (who actually owns these?!  — and can I be her friend? — $3,025, Barney’s):
Talk about fireworks…ba-da-bing, ba-da-boom.
PS.  I’m so sorry I’ve been so delinquent lately :(   Lots of work, lots of social events,  lots of caring after Mr. Magpie, lots of exercise = limited time for blogging.  I’ve missed you all!
Singing the Summer Blues
In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, White on June 1, 2011 at 10:42 am
Oh, hello, Summer.  Just a few weeks ago, your little sister Spring bared her shy little face to the world, and suddenly, you’re here, with 100 degree afternoons and the muggiest D.C. air you can imagine.  The rest of D.C. may not be rolling out the welcome mat to greet you, but I’m just about beside myself with happiness.  I love that lazy, thick feeling of summer.  And for whatever reason, the first thing I’m gravitating towards is deep near-navy on white accent pieces, a la MY FAVORITE look from the Derek Lam S/S ’11 collection:
I mean — did he nail it on the head or what?!  I’d wear this in a hot  second –  l.o.v.e. the halter neckline, the gauzy fabrication, the Missoni-esque print.  And I’d wear it styled similarly — wedges and all.  That is — if it didn’t cost a cool $3K (those with deeper pockets: you can snap this bad boy up online — $2,890, Derek Lam).  I’d get the bluesy, breezy look for less with this darling mini (Colette, $160, Barney’s):
I’d play down the girlishness of the look by adding some grown up leather wedges (Chloe, on sale for $345, Net-A-Porter)
And finishing with this woodsy statement necklace (Oscar de la Renta, $400, Net-A-Porter) and an oversized clutch (love this foldover style — $149, Clare Vivier):
If you get a chill easily (my main problem in life — I have seriously wre-tched circulation, to the point that I can sometimes look down in 65 degree weather and have totally lost circulation in my toes), layer a white blazer over top, with the collar flipped up, Miami-Vice style (Elizabeth and James, $395, Net-A-Porter):
I like the HI-DEF white and classic styling of the Elizabeth and James style above, but mine is actually by Madewell and is super light-weight and over-long.  IT IS PERFECT.  I’ve also seen similar, inexpensive styles in H&M, so might check there if you’re looking to get the look for less.  It’d be the perfect counterpoint to this deep blue and black stained-glass-print Twenty8Twelve dress (on sale for $106, TheOutnet):
I’d sport it with some fuh-yierce platformed tootsies (I ordered these ankle breakers last month and am dy.ing. over their awesomeness — and affordability.  Pelle Moda, $145 (!!!), Shopbop):
I’d finish with some dramatic danglers (Kara by Kara Ross, $200, Boutique1) and a statement clutch (this looks so Lanvin…for less — $225, KateSpade):
But perhaps I’m getting ahead of myself here…I’d rather be leaning toward the white-on-blue prints as summer dawns.  Something like this amazing loose-fit caftan would be perfect at the beach ($200, Sirene), especially with some jet-setting chic gold-trimmed aviatahs (Gucci, $275, Nordstrom) and a long vintage Chanel pendant ($1,340, Stylebop):
Especially with a crisp white bikini (my favorite for this summer is the Palma NYC style I own…LOVE their line!):
Finish with some uber-high wedges (l.o.v.e the rope detailing — $850, Michael Kors) and an amazing rope-accent tote (made of recycled sails! — $160, SeaBags):
Also ideal for beaching it up this summer?  This blue-on-white printed bikini ($670, Net-A-Porter).  It costs a pretty penny, but…it’s Pucci.  So there’s that.
I love it with these uh-mayzing mixed gold sandals (love the rose on yellow gold leather!  TDF. — K. Jacques, $270, Opening Ceremony):
Perfect with an oversized, crinkly cargo style top ($68, EchoDesign) and this eye-catching reversible gold-and-camel tote from Tiffany’s new line of handbags ($395, Tiffany):
These conical Eddie Borgo studs in rose gold ($150, Eddie Borgo) and a couple of bangles (ideally, a mix of rose and yellow gold — $88/piece, Henri Bendel) complete the look:
Also digging this inky blue blouson-style dress (Seneca Rising, on sale for $132, Les Nouvelles), paired with a chunky white necklace ($50, TopShop):
I’d wear with some strappy white sandals ($99, Heels) and this oversized braided bag ($90, PiperLime):
Alternately, how about a large-gem statement necklace ($168, BCBG) with a flowy white dress ($295, Theory)?
A pair of blue espadrilles ($255, Endless) are right on-point:
For a dressier affair, do you not.die. over this asymmetrical Joseph dress (on sale for $222, Net-A-Porter — eerily similar to this Shoshanna style…)?  Perfect for a late summer wedding, along with some enorma-studs ($70, Kendra Scott):
I’d add a simple gold glitter clutch ($89, J. Crew) and some coordinating peeptoes (Kate Spade, on sale for $162, FootCandyShoes):
I got the summer blues…in the happiest of ways :)
It’s Wedding Season.
In Accessories, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Glitter, Jewelry, Romantic, Shoes on May 16, 2011 at 12:41 pm
It’s officially wedding season.  Or, in my case, ENGAGEMENT season, since I’ve heard about/toasted to 6 newly engaged couples in the past two weeks or so (!!!) and probably another 6 couples over the past few months!  Such an exciting time!  AND (not to make it all about me), just found out that I will be the maid of honor (refuse to use the term “matron of honor” — sounds so old and ogrely) in my bestie’s wedding and am dying with excitement (!!!)  I’ve clearly already begun to make some preliminary plans for all of the awesome parties I’m going to be throwing in her honor over the next year or so, and have also already bought her a truckload of engagement prezzies, including a Smythson wedding planner with her NEW initials engraved on it.
She informed me that she’s already stocked up on Le Pens ($1.69 apiece, Marvy) and some organizational folders/dossiers ($18, SeeJaneWork), like a good little bride:
The pens will come in handy for all of the THANKYOUNOTE writing she will be doing, and — to further assist her in the enormous task of wedding-related letter-writing — I found her the most ADORABLE note cards in the universe from TheLittleBlackShop:
When I reached out to place the order, I got to “e-meet” the creative genius behind the line, who turns out to be just the loveliest of people as well as the UBER-talented founder/head designer of a event planning / design firm, LittleBlackPress.  (She also lives in Boston, MA, my current dream city, as noted in Friday’s post…).  She has generously offered one lucky reader a set of personalized cards from her shop!  What what!  To enter, all you need to do is leave a message on this post telling me about the best piece of mail you’ve ever received — acceptance letter to college? love note? $5,000 refund?  Pair of Louboutins?  What was it?!  Please also check out TheLittleBlackShop’s Facebook page (lots of interesting ideas for the brides-to-be!) and her uh-may-zing bloglet to swoon over her event-planning capabilities.  Enter to win by Thursday, 5/19 — I’ll announce a winner on Friday, 5/20! Also, died over her “Pregnant in Heels” cards given my unhealthy obsession with the new Bravo series of the same name.  (Ridiculous and also addictive.)
Need to order now?!  The sweet proprieter has offered 20% off all purchases from her Etsy storefront with coupon code FASHION, from now through June 30! WOOO!  Love is in.the.air.
But down to the nuts and bolts of wedding/engagement season: what to wear to all of the festive wedding-related occasions so many of us have on our social agendas over the next few weeks?  I can’t tell you how many emails I’ve received about wedding-related wardrobe decisions, i.e. what shoes to wear with a bridesmaid dress, where to go for cute wedding presents, etc.  So here goes: a few styling ideas to leave us stylish throughout the season!
My first instincts for wedding attendant fare?  A bright sorbet-colored dress (mango — Tibi, $155, TheOutnet; strawberry — $305, Zimmerman; or raspberry — $345, RebeccaTaylor) –
I like the idea of complementing with some dazzling, high-def turquoise statement jewelry — how about this go-geous necklace by Loren Hope ($175, LorenHopeDesigns — incidentally, bought my mother’s “mother of the bride” thank you gift from her — the “Belize Cluster” necklace, and she loved it):
Perfect with a chic clutch (love this beaded style — Chloe, $1,650, MyTheresa) and some eye-catching gold sandals (OMG, obsessed with the entire Rupert Sanderson collection! — $795, Rupert Sanderson):
If you shy away from bold colors, this soft gray dress (on sale for $229, Calypso) is lovely, and I d.i.e. over the soft “epaulette” inspired accents on the shoulders.
I kind of like it with some dramatic sparkling danglers ($270, Dannijo) and some jaw-dropping shoes (a girl can dream, can’t she?! — one concern about these: they may upstage the bride…$3,295, Net-A-Porter):
With a monochomatic look of this sort, a little POP in the form of a funky clutch is in order — still head.over.heels for these be-petaled Sondra Roberts clutches, which come in a range of colors ($105, SondraRoberts):
The above dress is also available in a classy navy hue that would look killah with some emerald-inspired earrings ($280, Mariam Haskell)
I’d finish with a show-stopping cuff (Alexandra McQueen, $670, TheOutnet) and some glittering pumps (Kate Spade, $325, Jildor) –
For the pastel-lovers, how to die is this elegantly-draped mint dress ($368, Alice & Olivia), especially offset by coral earrings ($320, Bounkit):
I’d finish with a pearl-accented bracelet ($480, Mariam Haskell) and one of the amazing Amanda Pearl roll clutches ($1,395, AmandaPearl):
An Ode to My Mother
In Accessories, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes on May 9, 2011 at 12:33 pm
Last year’s mother’s day post apparently brought my mother {and several other mothers} to tears, so I’ll do my best to avoid the sentimental this go around, though I find a less effusive ode to my mother challenging if not impossible.  I can’t help but speak of her with the most earnest and wide-eyed respect, adoration, and love.
My mother has taught me many things, whether by example {I strive for her selflessness in relationships} or brute force {“Jennifer, say thank you.”}  Here, a few of the major legacies and lessons I have received from my mother, the most ladylike of the bunch:
1.  Do your own bidding. I was something of a shrinking violet as a child {quiet, shy little thing…I was always very, very petite, with a little voice to match}, and I owe any iota of assertiveness and poise to her consistent message of self-empowerment.  This is a semi-inappropriate anecdote, but bear with me: when I was little and having trouble with moving from diapers to “big girl underwear,” she would urge me to repeat “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can” when I was in prime accident-prone territory.   Nowadays, I repeat that mantra more often than I care to admit; the message resonates all the more powerfully in my late 20s, now that I’ve fully flown the coop.  She taught me to rely on myself, my own devices, in order to get where I want to go.
2.  Listen. I don’t know how she does it with 5 kids on her hands, constantly vying for her attention, sympathy, and advice, but she is the most patient friend on earth.  She’ll sit and listen to me vent until the cows come home, knowing that sometimes you don’t want advice or feedback or commentary — just a friendly soul to share your thoughts with.  I need to take a page out of her book on this one.
3.  Say “yes” as often as you can; only say “no” when you mean it. My mother claims this as her parenting technique, but I’m fairly confident that she’d apply this to just about any relationship in her life.  Her generosity of spirit is humbling.  May also explain why she is freakishly busy at all times of the year, and why she needs to “pencil me in” for lunch dates.
4.  Read as much as possible. One of the best days of the first ten years of my life (hands down) arrived when my mother took me to the DC Public Library to get my own library card.  I was ecstatic, even though I could hardly sign my name in cursive, and I can remember the months of rapid reading that ensued.  I must have torn through an extra book or two a week just to be able to return and check out the newest “Boxcar Children” under my own tab.  My mom reads an average of an astonishing 2 books a week — by far the most impressive bibliophile I’ve ever encountered.  Must.catch.up.
5.  Never put yourself down. When I was about six years old, I got in trouble with my parents for something or other.  I was so sickened and upset about the whole scenario, I whispered angrily: “I hate myself” under my breath.  My mother whipped around as though I’d taken the Lord’s name in vain and said: “Don’t you ever say that about my best friend.”  My eyes were wide as saucers as I contemplated the unexpected gravity of the words that had so easily rolled off my tongue and pondered the meaning of being my mother’s “best friend.”  (Was it possible for a 6 year old to be best friends with her mother, a real, live adult?!)  The moment truly shaped me — I shy away from the word “hate” as a general proposition and have never since applied it to myself.
OK, and SCENE.  I’m imagining my Magpie Mother tearing up now, so I’ll quickly switch gears to a few fashion-related legacies she’s passed along.  I listed several of her most salient styling tips in last year’s post, but here are a few more gems:
1.  You can never have enough cardigans.
No, really.  She insists that you can never have enough of them.  Think I’m exaggerating?  She literally is the Imeldo Marcos of cardignas.  I swear she buys a new cashmere cardigan every day of the year.  She also constantly advises my sisters and I to “pack a cardigan in case you get cold.”  As a result, I have my own fledgling rainbow of cardigans, many of them the J. Crew Jackie ($62 each), which I must own in about 12 colors already.
{DVF, $355, Matches}
2.  Don’t be afraid of bold nail colors.
While my mom would never (nev.er) wear a dark color on her nails, I’ve seen her test-drive some intense pinks, corals, mauves, and reds in her time.  Corollary to this rule: always get your nails done.  She’s had a standing appointment every Friday at ILO Salon for the past 20 years of her life.
{$16/pop, DeborahLippmann}
3.  Wear as much color as possible.  Especially if it’s in the peach color family.
My Mom chastises me for wearing too much black.  While I’m Eeyore in mourning (grays and blacks galore), she’s like a little beam of sunshine, in her coordinated peachy-pink-centric wardrobe.  She’s loving the BRIGHTS trend this season, and — admittedly — for good reason.  Color really brings a lot to the table, and can really illuminate you from the outside in.
{Balenciaga, $880, Matches}
{Adam, on sale for $78, TheOutnet}
{Top three pairs of flats: $45/pair, BCFootwear; Bottom pair: Bloch, $165, Net-A-Porter}
{$45/clutch, GraphicImage}
{Top: Robert Goossens, $150, Vivre; Middle: Bounkit, $75, Charm and Chain; Bottom: $320, Bounkit}
4.  Dress like a lady.
Ripped/frayed pants?  Distressed jeans?  Low-rise pants?  Midriff-baring tops?  My mom doesn’t want to hear about it or see it.  She’ll forever swoon over a fuller, longer skirt, and she’s always advising us to over-dress.  The risk of under-dressing is a far more serious threat.
{Earrings: $45, Oliphant; Dress: Adam, $197, TheOutnet; Shoes: $285, KateSpade; Clutch: $58, J. Crew}
5.  Stay organized.
My mom may well be the most organized woman on the universe.  She probably has a dewey decimal system in place for her closet, and her handbags are carefully-orchestrated feats of orderliness.  {By contrast, my bags are black holes of debris and clutter.}  This tendency towards organization extends to all aspects of her life, but most especially her kitchen.  My sisters and I joke that she’s installed GPS devices in each and every one of her bowls, glasses, serving platters, and tupperware containers, because if we dare “borrow” one and neglect to return it, we’ll receive weekly emails asking after its whereabouts.  All jokes aside, that’s some impressive organizational skill — and I could use some of that.  Perhaps I’ll begin by investing in some eye-catching tupperware ($32, FrenchBull), to keep my ps and qs in order.
In short: I love you, Mom, for all of the lessons (practical, styling-related, motivational, and otherwise) that you have taught me.  HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
Entering a Blue Period
In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Intimates, Jewelry on March 2, 2011 at 7:03 pm
UPDATE {March 4}: We have a WINNER!  Tara E. has won the Tepper Jackson giveaway!  I’m with you, Tara — I’d love to steal away to a private island in the Bahamas.  Hurray!
First it was honeysuckle, now it’s cobalt.  2011 has been busy with flash-in-the-pan, saturated color obsessions.
{images from here and here}
Not that I’m objecting: it’s lovely to see the panel of fashion commentators buzzing from fashion week event to fashion week event divested of their uniform black garb.  (It does, however, raise an alarming practical question for budget-conscious fashionistas like myself: do we throw caution / rent checks to the wind to keep up with the “flavor of the moment” palette change pattern or watch bemusedly from afar in can’t-go-wrong neutrals?  Obviously, it doesn’t have to be as all-or-nothing as I’m painting it, as we can snap up small/inexpensive add-ons to keep up with trends, but it does make me think twice before snagging that shocking pink shift dress I saw at Zara the other day.)  Still.  All I want to wear at the moment is a moody black and blue get-up.  I’d take a cornflower blue scallop tank (love the demi-cropped shape of this top — I’m so.tired of the babydoll style — $30, TopShop) with a black jacket in an unusual shape,  like this Ann DeMeulemeester topper (this designer is the darling of fashion editors in the know — her designs are a little offbeat, a little vampy — $883, Matches), black skinnies, and some fierce ankle boots (love the entire Joie line — on sale for $277, Endless):
I like it finished with a heavy statement necklace (3.1 Phillip Lim, $275, Net-A-Porter) and a solid gold clutch (this Alexander McQueen style is almost too good to be true…$441, TheOutnet):
Slick and street-ready.  This look is so not usually what I reach for in the mornings (who am I, a Kate Moss wannabe?!), but lately — as noted here — I’ve been feeling a little stir-crazy thanks to the winter weather and have been opting for fierce boots and all-black get-ups.  I’m even winter-wearied enough to start thinking about the shorts-with-tights look, which I’ve seen carried out with impressive aplomb on the likes of Olivia Palermo and Alexa Chung, but have shied away from for fear of looking like I’m trying too hard.  But how could you go wrong with some vintage-style enormastuds ($100, Amrita Singh), a ladylike black blouse ($150, Net-A-Porter), some tailored cobalt blue shorts (Cacharel, $272, Matches), opaque tights, and powerful heels (Balmain, $1,540, Montaigne Market)?
As an aside, I’m something of a categorical opponent to open-toe / peep-toe booties.  They defy logic and, as Donna Karan recently put it, “fashion must live in the real world.”  True.dat.  However, the architecture of this Balmain bootie is just…perfect.  Love the slender heel, the perfect mid-calf height, the ribbon ties, the ruching.  I mean.  I die.  I make an exception for that sort of superior construction.  I’d finish with my recent obsession: a handmade Sammy clutch ($215, Barney’s).
I spotted these in Barney’s yesterday and literally held two in my hand as I prowled the store, as though I were going to buy them, and didn’t want anyone else to see them.  As I mentioned in my effusive {covets} entry from yesterday, the pic just doesn’t do it justice — it’s constituted of the most outrageously supple, buttery leather, and it unzips to expose three separate compartments.  I need one in my life.  Also loving the idea of full-on dress look — something like the chic pea in this snap is wearing:
{image from StyleSightings}
I’m thinking a simple tie-waist shirt dress (Splendid, $105, Net-A-Porter):
Perfect for work.  I’d pair with some serious neckwear (currently obsessing over this Katerina Psoma style — $370, Farfetch), some black tights, and some simple black heels (I’m thinking a suede style, with a touch of platform, like the Jimmy Choo Cosmic, $695, Jimmy Choo — but check out these more reasonably priced Vince Camutos to get the look for much, much, much less):
I’ve been getting back into the little crook-of-the-arm roll bag lately — perhaps aftermath of last season’s ladylike, 50s era stylings — and have had my eye on this Marc Jacobs tote ($990, ShopTwigs):
For a casual daytime get-up, are you not smitten with the idea of a downtown-chic quilted leather jacket (sorry so many of the pieces I’ve featured today are so pricey! — I’ve got my head in the clouds — D&G, $1,345, Net-A-Porter), a Sonia Rykiel blouse (pricey, but oh so lovely — $390, Net-A-Porter), paired with skinnies and these uber-covetable suede Isabel Marant tootsies ($620, Net-A-Porter — or get a similar look for less, $90, TopShop):
I’d top it all off with a slouchy leather hobo (I love the Alexander Wang styles, but this J. Crew “Sawyer” gives the higher end designs a run for their money — or rather, a run for much less money — $298, J. Crew):
Stow all the cash you’ve just saved in an on-point YSL wallet, which could easily double as a clutch:
Meanwhile, for weekend-wear, I like the idea of a striped tee-dress ($72, Basic French) layered over leggings/tights and finished with some classic nude boots ($695, Loeffler Randall) and a statement necklace (Lizzie Fortunato, $420, Charm and Chain):
Finish with a pop-of-blue crossbody ($90, Zara):
Or maybe channel the chic pea in this amazing street fashion shot by Garance Dore (seriously, I die over this snap, and need.those.shades.) –
You need only pair a denim shirt (on sale for $50, Swell) with some skinny black pants, some fab boots (I seriously, seriously need these — $165, TheOutnet), and some statement earrings ($125, Suzanna Dai):
Now, we’d all love that Celine clutch (Taylor Tomasi Hill has been spotted all over the place with hers…although, LBH — this look is a little too…cobalt.  I would have left the shades at home fo sho…)
{image from Garance Dore}
– or the Celine Boston Shopper I’ve been fanatically obsessing over –
But this affordable cross-body ($35, Dorothy Perkins) could get the job done in a pinch (and on a budget):
Other little pops of cobalt to work into your wardrobe?  A statement necklace with lapis stones ($250, Amrita Singh) with some peeptoe pumps ($98, Vince Camuto):
Alternately, pair a splashy clutch ($60, SimplySoles) with some suede platforms ($128, TopShop):
Or a luxe bag (YSL, $1,325, Farfetch) with some classic Hermes flats ($570, Hermes):
Or layer the color beneath your wardrobe with these gorgeous Deborah Marquit unmentionables ($195 for bra, $110 for knickers — Net-A-Porter):
So many options.  I saw a little cotton cobalt-and-chocolate striped clutch the other day at Zara, and contemplated its impulse buy for about 20 minutes.  Like — I stood, posing, in front of various mirrors forever.  In the end, I just couldn’t get over the flimsiness — why couldn’t it have been made of leather?!  Triste.  And finally: dream wardrobe alert.  This asymmetrical Marchesa number would be to.die.for for an evening (an extravagant evening…) out, especially with these stunning KJL cabochon drops ($198, Pret-A-Beaute):
Perfect with a classic Amanda Pearl roll clutch ($998, Amanda Pearl) and a pair of bananas, break-yo-ankle Cha Cha Louboutins ($945, Barney’s — or get the look for less with these similarly styled Badgley Mischkas):
Anyone else feeling…blue?!
DON’T FORGET TO ENTER MY GIVEAWAY!  A winner will be announced tomorrow.  I’ve been reading your entries with great interest / wanderlust — and for those of you have not yet entered, here’s the deal: the folks over at TepperJackson have offered to award one lucky magpie one of their flashy luggage tags!  All you need to do is add Tepper Jackson as a friend on Facebook or follow @TepperJackson on Twitter, and then leave a comment on this post (or the Hi-Def post) telling me where you’d like to go on your own little winter escape!
In Accessories, Brights!, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Fur, Glitter, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Romantic on February 14, 2011 at 12:46 pm
This month has already gotten off to a romantic start — Mr. Magpie and I toasted to our six month wedding anniversary on February 7th, and we’ve been reveling in newylwed-hood for the duration of the month.  How appropriate, given that it’s Valentine’s month, and love is in the air…
…quite literally, if you take on the DIY “glittered love garland” project I stumbled upon via the Lovely Indeed blog.  I’d string this up in our apartment to set the mood for our romantic dinner for two, which we’re having catered by BlackSalt {oysters + lobster + desserts = oh my!}, and which will be accompanied by a bottle of Pierre Paillard grand cru, which came highly recommended from our favorite wine aficionado, Julio of Best Cellars in Clarendon.
I spent the majority of my Sunday “Valentine-ing,” baking little love notes in the shape of sugar cookies and starting to assemble the tablescape for our dinner:
{The bottle of sparkling rose was also a Best Cellars find — Mr. Magpie and I went nuts and bought a mix-and-match case of delicious-looking wines and champagnes.}  I had intended to buy some roses at the florist for the occasion, but mini-carnations in a variety of pinks and reds caught my eye.  I normally despise carnations — they read “tacky” to me, for some reason — but the spray of Valentine’s Day colors lulled me into their purchase, and I found myself buying three dozen in varying shades and happily assembling them into a happy little “love-day” arrangement:
Aren’t the colors to.die.?  It’s totally inspired my Valentine’s Day getup, which can most easily be explained via  a simple dressing equation: floaty little top + skinny jeans + spiffy shoes + bling-bling = one pretty little Valentine.  I’m opting for a shirt like this happy geranium-hued find ($22, Madewell), paired with skinnies and some splashy flats (Bloch, $200, Net-A-Porter):
A stack of red and gold bangles are a downtown-chic addition (Amrita Singh, $100, Pink Mascara) –
(I obsess over the mismatchiness of this stack — it looks like a collection you’ve been carefully assembling for years, and over multiple continents.)  I’d probably finish with my blush pink blazer, which is definitely the favorite piece in my closet at present (this version is by Paul Smith — $330, MyWardrobe):
Killer (and I mean killer) shades (I’m obsessed with these scallop-design Chloes — $330, Nordstrom) and a slouchy black bag is the perfect counterpoint to the frou-frou fruitiness of the rest of the outfit (Alexander Wang, $1,360, Mrs. H)
Or how cute would you look in a cowl-neck sweater in cherry red ($152, TheOutnet) with this kitschy kiss-print scarf ($178, ShopKitson)?
I’d finish with some black suede booties (Giuseppe Zanotti, $572, Bluefly):
The Wang hobo above would look slick with this look.  Just finish with a black fur-accented topper — I’m obsessed with my recent Loeffler Randall score, even though Mr. Magpie calls it my “gorilla jacket.”  It looks super chic with streamlined black jeans and sky-high black booties.  If you have the means, this R13 variation is bananas  ($1,560, Farfetch):
Especially with some glammed up bling, like these Ben-Amun studs ($230, Charm and Chain) and this jaw-droppingly fierce statement necklace ($539, LuisaViaRoma):
Any of these work day-to-night, although I’m looking forward to something a touch on the more dolled-up side for my dinner — I’ll be pairing a silky, tomato-red blouse with probably my single favorite pair of shoes in the universe — these hot pink Louboutins, which I display prominently in my closet and smile at every day:
And my other favorite fashion find of the year: a white channeled fur, cropped-sleeved jacket by (this will shock you) Juicy Couture of all labels.  (It’s the same one Kourtney Kardashian wore here and here, and you can still find it at Zappos for $358!)
Get the look yourself with a floaty red chiffon top ($70, TopShop), skinnies, and some fuschia pumps (Sergio Rossi, $252, TheOutnet):
Go heavy on the glam factor with sparkling add-ons, like these vintage-style Elizabeth Cole baubles ($138 for earrings, $198 for bracelet):
A glittery clutch is the perfect finishing touch (on sale for $172! — Kate Spade):
Don’t forget a spritz of your favorite evening-ready perfume (mine is Chanel Mademoiselle — $80 and up, Sephora):
If your plans call for dressier garb, something like this Anlo silky dress has my name written allover it ($278, Thistle Clover)
I’d pair with nude pumps ($260, FootCandyShoes) and a fun little clutch (Lanvin, on sale for $543, Matches):
Some sparkle is necessary here, and I’m loving these ladylike drops ($98, Max and Chloe), and this glittery bangle (Alexis Bittar, $195, Intermix):
Alternately, I’m head.over.heels. for this asymmetrical, pleated number by Richard Nicoll ($315, Net-A-Porter), which I’d pair with these gorgeous Kate Spade enorma-studs ($125, Kate Spade):
I’d pair it with some bright red peeptoes (these coral-red Louboutins have been on my love list for far too long…swoon — $715, Barney’s):
And then maybe round it out with this blush glittered clutch ($35, Dorothy Perkins):
And finally: the absolute dress of my dreams?!  This unbelievable Giambattista Valli shift (d.i.e. — $2,230, Net-A-Porter):
Let the dress do all the talking.  Just add some nude/blush pumps (Jimmy Choo, $495, Net-A-Porter) and some deco-style earrings (l.o.v.e these Lulu Frosts — $350, Charm and Chain) and you’re the perfect Valentine:
And hey — if you’re flying solo this year and just need a little perk-me-up for yourself — a little self-serve Valentine — consider this delicate heart-shaped necklace ($140, Erica Anenberg):
Or how about these delicate-yet-organic-looking finds by ByBoe ($38 for ring, $40 for studs):
For something on the higher-end of the scale, how much would you cherish one of these darling little heart-shaped Louis Vuitton money purses ($405, Louis Vuitton)?
Or go all out and let your bag do all the talking for you with these gold “Amore” clutch by Moschino (on sale for $598, Moschino):
Ooh la la.
Saturation Point
In Accessories, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Neutrals, Pop of Red, Work Wear on January 12, 2011 at 1:36 pm
I mentioned the other day that I’ve been loving the “palette structure” that has defined so many of the Spring/Summer 2011 collections from my favorite labels, including Lanvin, Celine, and Chloe.  By that I meant that so many of them featured predominantly neutral palettes livened up by pops of hot pink, coral, orange, and what fashion editors are now dubbing “honeysuckle,” which Pantone has designated “the color of 2011.”  And then there were those — like Jil Sander and Nina Ricci — who went all.out.BRIGHTS.  I’m loving both approaches — the appeal of fully saturated color is fresh.period.
{looks from this little magpie’s favorite lines: Lanvin, left, and Chloe, right}
{Valentino and YSL}
{full on color pops from Jil Sander and Nina Ricci}
Even though it’s snowy outside, I can’t help but embrace the springtime colors.  First, I’d l.o.v.e. this happy orange wrap dress (who else but Diane Von Furstenberg — $365, Barney’s):
I’d pair with a festive beaded necklace ($160, Loren Hope) and some nude pointy-toed slingbacks (very Stella McCartney — on super sale for $57, Lori’s Shoes) for a perfect workerbee outfit:
Inspiration behind the look (as if I need more than the runway trend)?  Mark Rothko’s “White Cloud Over Purple” — you can buy an inexpensive print for only $19 at Amazon!)
I’m also loving the retro styling on this inexpensive Dorothy Perkins frock ($50, Dorothy Perkins):
Go full-on bright with some fuchsia suede Louboutins ($695, Net-A-Porter) and then tone it all down with a blush-colored scarf (Chan Luu, $180, Les Pomettes) and a nude-colored quilted bag (Marc Jacobs, $744, Matches):
(For a strikingly similar, bargain version of the quilted bag above, check out this $26 ASOS find.)  P.S. I d.i.e. over the rich fuchsia shade of the Louboutins above — suh-woon.  I fell in love with the color when I saw it on this KILLER MaxMara dress — O.M.G.:
With that dream-worthy color in mind, I’m also loving this similarly-hued, artful silken blouse ($198, SeatonSurf), which I’d pair with dark skinnies and some nude flats (Fendi, $520, Barney’s):
This woven leather tote ($110, Lori’s Shoes) would coordinate perfectly –
– while a pair of sparkling enorma-studs ($55, Kendra Scott) and a pink-accented necklace ($168, Wendy Mink) liven things up:
Another perfect “casual day” outfit (ideal for shopping)?  This covet-listed shirt-dress ($280, ShopBird), which I’d pair with some serious jewel-age ($450, WendyMink):
I’d top it off with some polished gold earrings ($60, Jenny-Bird), a roomy BRIGHT tote (I’m not usually huge on logos like this one, but something about its design is vintage-chic to me — $310, Zappos), and some cut-out flats ($126, Thera M):
Ooh la la.  And how chic would you look in this rich purple dress (Whit, $435, ShopBird), accented by sparkling costume clips ($70, Charm and Chain):
I’d finish with a printed scarf ($295, Les Pomettes) and some vanilla-colored pointy-toed pumps ($140, Tony Bianco):
I’d finish with a corresponding Melie Bianco tote ($96, Lori’s Shoes):
Alternately, how darling would this blush-toned dress (DVF, $485, Matches) look with some BRIGHT coral pumps ($79, Vince Camuto)?
I’d funk it up with this statement-making agate necklace ($220, Dear Fieldbinder)
Or maybe I’d go Valentine’s Day chic, with a peachy-pink blouse top (Marni, $270, Browns) and a BRIGHT reddish-pink skirt (on sale for $98, Singer22):
I’d finish with (big surprise) neutrals, like this nude leather “waterfall” clutch ($60, ASOS) and a pair of nude patent wedges (Marc by Marc Jacobs, $330, Net-A-Porter):
Slick.  You can also feel slick while letting the designers do the color pairing on your behalf, as with this Issa dress (on sale for $280, JosephM – and as a reminder, this designer is pretty hip right now, since Kate Middleton wore one of the label’s lines when announcing her engagement to Prince William):
Insta-modernize with some enorma-studs ($65, Charm and Chain), a funky little laser-cut-petaled clutch (Sondra Roberts, $98, Nordstrom), and these affordable Charles David platforms (only $125! — PiperLime):
And finally — for those of us only interested in “popping” with color (rather than fully saturating ourselves in it)– how about this yummy drape-front sweater ($335, Seaton Surf) over a white blouse ($118, Madewell), paired with your skinnies and some chic cork flats ($165, PrettyBallerinas):
Add these right-on-trend cat-eyes (Chloe, $103, TheOutnet), a  funky necklace (Suzanna Dai, $365, Charm and Chain), and a festive oversized tote ($498, Instilo), and you’re set:
I don’t know about you, but I’m loving the prospect of spring right now…
Magpie Musts: The New Year’s Resolution Edition
In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Neutrals, Shoes, Sundresses on December 29, 2010 at 4:41 pm
This isn’t exactly a resolution list per se — more like a list of fresh styling ideas I’m looking forward to trying in 2011.
1.  I will step away from the enorma-stud and try some new ear candy options.
We all know I have an obsession with oversized stud earrings — you should see my collection: a treasure trove of glimmery, be-jeweled, be-sparkled, and otherwise flashy enormastuds, generally in the 1″-in-diameter-and-up category.
{1.  $154, Ben Amun; 2. $125, Charm and Chain; 3. $350, Bounkit; 4. $700, Aloha Rag; 5. $160, Ylang23}
This year, I will venture out of my comfort zone and try some alternative styles.  Funny how I instantly gravitate to the polar opposite — shoulder-grazing, 70s-esque evening earrings — finding “in-between” styles slightly…boring.  I like to go for drama with jewelry, so I suppose it’s no surprise.  These shining stand-outs caught my eye ($140, JennyBird):
They’ll stun when sported with an asymmetrical, short-and-chic structured mini dress (Paul and Joe, on sale for $287, Net-A-Porter), a festive clutch ($30, Fashion-Conscience), and  some glittery slingbacks (Kate Spade, on sale for $162, FootCandyShoes):
Other top-picks for the style? Kendra Scott’s “filigree” danglers ($65, Kendra Scott) and Paige Novick’s chain tassels (on sale for $198, Intermix — hurry!  They’re running an extra 40% off all sale items, so this would be closer to $140!):
While I like the idea of playing with proportions by pairing these stunners with mini dresses, I’d also play around Rachel Zoe’s aesthetics here: she often pairs hers with floor-grazing maxis, like this Issa (the label that designed Kate Middleton’s now infamous engagement dress — $953, Matches):
Finish with (as always with Ms. Zoe), uber-high, stacked heels (Rupert Sanderson, $860, Shop Savannah’s) and a statement clutch (Derek Lam, $890, Barney’s):
Quite the aesthetic adventure for this little Magpie…
2)  I will leave my Jackie O. oversized sunnies at home in favor of some of-the-moment cat-eyes.
Inspired by the Louis Vuitton Resort 2011 collection (which was heavy on the cat-eye style) and this uh.may.zing pictorial (my favorite shot is the one below), I need a pair of sleek cat-eyes for this upcoming spring/summer season.
{image from The Electric}
A pair of inexpensive Urban Outfitters’ might be the perfect quick fix for this trend ($14, UrbanOutfitters), although…let’s be real: I’d much rather own and flaunt a pair of the uber-luxe Linda Farrows (like these python-accented centerpieces — a cool $757 (!!!!), Linda Farrow):
For something mid-priced, check out these discounted Chloe shades (love! — $100, TheOutnet):
And for something truly over the top (and tres of the moment), invest in the iconic Louis Vuitton Penelope shades, complete with librarian-gone-chic glasses chain ($800 — call Louis Vuitton to order at 1.866.VUITTON):
(Get the upscale acetate cat eye look above for far.less with these $18 ASOS shades.)  Now all you need is a fit-and-flare housewife dress in pitch-perfect coral-red ($100, ModCloth) and my favorite “Lady Bow” Louboutins ($735, Barney’s):
Um, yes.  Now.
3.  I will continue my quest to branch out and away from skinny-leg/cigarette styles.
I have a…thing for skinny jeans.  I pretty much live in my black J. Brands and my Paige dark washes, and they are super-flattering and versatile, whether paired with uber-high heels and a frilly little “going out” top or a pair of Loeffler Randall boots and a slouchy sweater.  This silhouette is lean and mean.  Lately, however I’ve been contemplating a mega step in the opposite direction: what are our thoughts on denim of the wider-leg variety?  Since I’m petite, I worry that the extra fabric will overwhelm me — but then again, I think that the wide leg can be flattering on a trim build.  So.  Let’s test it out with a chic plaid top (I like the collarless style — Steven Alan, $110, La Garconne) tucked into (the tucking-in is crucial to preventing a frumpy look) some higher-waisted, wider-legged Sevens ($155, Buckle):
I’d finish with a statement necklace (loooove this wood bead style — $58, PiperLime), some serious suede platform pumps (YSL, $720, MyTheresa — or get the look for a bit less with these $222 Pour La Victoires in a similar style) and a statement bag (I’ve long lusted after this Marcie tote by Chloe — Bilson owns it, so you know I’m a fan! — $1,790, Net-A-Porter):
For work, I’m thinking of branching out and away from my J. Crew slim-cut cropped pixie pants and subbing in some wide-leg trousers (Etro, on sale for $217, Farfetch), which I’d pair with this darling DVF find (ugh — a.dore the color profile here! — $198, Diane Von Furstenberg — be sure to tuck it in!):
Tie it all together with a  mega-tote (I just love the gargantuan proportions of this tote — $375, J. Crew) and some black-and-white patent pumps (Miu Miu, $416, Net-A-Porter):
As for jewelry?  Opt for these delicate wire flower earrings ($60, ByBoe), a long statement necklace ($28, TopShop), and the Freelook watch I’ve been loving on for the past season ($199, Endless):
4.  I will experiment with fabrics other than denim, full stop.
So the last “look” in resolution #3, which featured wide-leg black work pants, speaks to this resolution to a certain extent, but I’m serious about wearing non-denim bottoms on the weekends as well.  I recently snapped up a pair of “boyfriend fit” olive chinos (as mentioned in my Olivette post) that I roll up at the ankle, but I’ve worn them about…twice.  So here’s to experimenting with other looks that center upon them, like pairing a boxy white blouse (Viktor and Rolf, $440, La Garconne) with Current Elliott “army” pants ($200, MyTheresa), a statement necklace (Lizzie Fortunato, $160, Kirna Zabete), and eye-catching flats (for some reason, I’m obsessed with pairing fuschia-purple with olive — the colors just sing! — $128, French Sole):
I’d finish with a wallet-turned-clutch ($490, YSL) and these un.be.lievable enorma-studs ($310, Bounkit):
Alternately, maybe I’ll pull my old nantucket red pants out of retirement and update the look entirely.  I used to sport them with a Lacoste polo, enorma-pearls, and Jack Rogers in college, but now I’d update the look by pairing them with a navy blazer (Rebecca Taylor, $395, Net-A-Porter), a statement necklace (Suzanna Dai — my favorite — $200, Charm and Chain), and some cork flats (a.dore — around $200, Pretty Ballerinas):
Finish with a slouchy, oversized tote in a gold hue (ugh, Givenchy — $1,600, Farfetch):
5)  I will take minimalism seriously and will channel Kate Bosworth in coming months.
I’ve been talking a big game about the chic-ness of the minimalista look, but when it comes down to it, I’m always piling on “just one more thing.”  I love the drama of statement jewelry, the appeal of a graphic print, the contrast of a layered look.  But there’s a lovely, of-the-moment panache to sartorial restraint, and I want to make.it.work.  I’ll have to devote a full post to her one day soon, but Kate Bosworth can pretty much show us how it’s done better than anyone else out there:
{in Calvin Klein}
{in Calvin Klein again}
I have mixed feelings about her recent appearance in a mint-green-and-white Jil Sander gown — it was generally well-received, and I “get” the look, but I can’t help but think it looks a bit…over-done?
(The pink lip is, however, brilliant.)  What are your New Year Fashion Resolutions?  Any in common with mine?  Share them on Facebook, leave a comment below, or email them to me!  I’d love to hear your thoughts.
The countdown is ON!
In Accessories, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Glitter, Jewelry, Neutrals, Romantic, Shoes, Winter Weather on December 20, 2010 at 11:21 am
As if this time of year weren’t already full of reasons to celebrate (Christmas in T-5 days, and New Year’s in T-10!), I received a big promotion last week at work (!), and I’ve been in “celebration” mode since.  After my boss broke the news, Mr. Magpie greeted me at home with the most gourmet “congratulations to us!” meal imaginable: a variety of oysters from our favorite fish purveyor (and restaurant), Black Salt, paired with Kluge Blanc de Blancs bubbly, and then made-from-scratch paella with monkfish, manila clams, and super-fancy chorizo, paired with a scrumptious Spanish Albarino.  It was almost better than hearing the good news from my boss!
I’ve been strutting around with a little extra pep in my step since, and I must admit that it’s heavily informed my wardrobe decisions over the past few days.  I’m gravitating towards a palette of champagne, shimmer, and metallics.  I almost wanted to change into a festive cocktail dress for our meal last week, and I had something like this Stella McCartney number in mind ($1,982, MyTheresa):
I’d let the dress do the talking, only pairing with some appropriately festive studs (l.o.v.e. — $70, Emily Elizabeth), a straight-forward nude clutch (on sale for only $22, ASOS), and toned-down nude pumps (you know these are my absolute favorites — the per.fect hue — Rupert Sanderson, $568, MyTheresa):
Oh, and don’t forget plenty of bubbly, especially enjoyed in these retro-style coupes ($75 for 2, Kate Spade):
I also suh-wooned over this ModCloth dress ($149, ModCloth), which I adore for its simplicity and femininity (I also love that it’s called the “Time of My Life Dress” — rather a propos!):
I’d accent with some cluster studs ($505, Ylang23), a sparkling statement necklace ($123, Fornash), and some glam gold pumps ($15o, Endless):
Spritz on some Kate Spade TWIRL (it’s fruity, floral, and perfectly festive — $80, KateSpade), grab your clutch (on sale for $80, Lauren Merkin), and you’re ready to go!
Alternately, let’s drool over this Grecian goddess-inspired dress in stunning vanilla (the draping is killer — Haute Hippie, $475, Net-A-Porter):
Bling it out with some statement pumps (I’m telling you, Joan & David has entirely re-invented itself — check these puppies out!  They remind me of Marc Jacobs’ covetable be-sparkled clutch from last season — $220, Nordstrom):
Add some snowflake-inspired studs ($138, Elizabeth Cole Jewelry) and (– in our dreams –) finish with this un.believable box clutch by Givenchy (it’s so chic, it already looks vintage — $2,109, Kirna Zabete):
If you prefer your dresses with a bit more structure but like the idea of a winter-white cocktail dress, slip into this Antik Batik pleated dress (on sale for $245, My Wardrobe):
“Frost” yourself with this unbelievable sparkler ($185, Scoop NYC) and a glitterati clutch (Santi, $252, Joan Shepp)
(Love the mixed-metal effect.  Pure radiance.)  These sparkly pumps seal the deal (Beatrix Ong, $421, Farfetch):
I’m all about the shoes above because the happy little sparkles remind me of the fine bubbles in a sip of champagne (in wine-speak, these bubbles are known as the “mousse” of the champagne):
{Stemless champagne glass by Bodum — $24 for 12, Amazon}
For something a bit different, consider an elegant lace dress — check out this precious ivory-on-champagne confection ($195, Calypso-Celle).  (As indicated in my “Holy Macaron” post, I’ve been obsessing over a similar dress by 3.1 Phillip Lim, but the price point on the Calypso dress is far more appealing.)
These luxe Louboutins in ladylike blush leather would look per.fect — ($795, ShopSavannahs):
The ideal add-ons?  Some gorgeous ivory-and-blush studs ($70, Kendra Scott), a sparkling cuff ($195, Charm and Chain) and one of the “It” bags of 2010 (quick!  we’re running out of time!) — Lanvin’s “Oulouette” ($990, MyTheresa):
Even more affordable: check out this amazing flapper-style dress ($152, MyShape), accented with some sparkling studs ($50, Bing Bang):
I would pair this glitzy little frock with some dove gray pumps (Louboutin, $755, Net-A-Porter) — the suede-on-lace effect is eye-catching, and the metallic heel on these puppies ties the look all together:
A go-to oversized satin clutch is the perfect finishing touch (on sale for $49, J. Crew):
And, finally, a white satin dress is the perfect “blanc de blanc” canvas (The Row, $750, Net-A-Porter):
I might take this look in a different direction, pairing with bronzey-champagne accents rather than the silver/gold add-ons I’ve been pushing above, like this chic statement necklace (Fallon, $350, Ssense), a bronzed metal pair of shoes ($295, Reiss), and a rose-gold effect clutch ($195, Lauren Merkin):
But then again — with something as re-inventable as an LWD, I can just as easily imagine the dress above coupled with classic, glossy gold in the form of this to.die.for statement necklace, which I featured last week in the {magpie covets} section ($70, TheOutnet), an oversized cocktail ring ($55, Zappos), and some gold pumps (Louboutin, $600, Brown’s):
Finish with a convertible clutch-to-crossbody bag (Tory Burch, $265, ShopTwigs):
Who’s ready to celebrate?!
*The title of this post may or may not have been inspired by The Far East Movement’s “Like a G-6,” which may or may not continue to be on my workout playlist, despite the fact that it’s already be played out TTM.  Don’t judge…
Les Artistes
In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes, Work Wear on December 16, 2010 at 1:34 pm
Mr. Magpie and I recently let our membership at the Phillips Collection lapse, and I’ve lately been regretting it.  (If you’re not local to D.C., the Phillips is a spectacular “modern” (it dates from impressionism to the present, so I use that term loosely) art museum in Northwest Washington in what was once a family-owned Dupont Circle mansion.  The property has since been expanded, but it retains a certain sense of “coziness” and manageability, despite its respectable collection of Picassos, Monets, Van Goghs, and Renoirs, among other esteemed pieces.)  I have always had a serious interest in art (let’s face it: I’m into anything that arranges color and shape into a beautiful, concerted “final look”), and, as an intern at the Phillips during my summers in college, used to enjoy every opportunity I had to pop into the space to check out the new exhibitions.  Nowadays, Mr. Magpie and I find ourselves with less and less time to spend there, and I suppose I’ll just have to lean on some of the spectacular painterly pieces that have currently weaseled their way onto my winter lust list.  (Seriously.  I didn’t even realize I was so obsessed with abstract-print dresses in splashy colors until I checked out my ever-expanding collection of “wants,” and saw a surprising trend in the lineup.)  I don’t know if it’s partly due to Tucker’s recent surge in popularity (the line is famous for its kitschily printed blouses and dresses, and they got so big, they ran a diffusion line for Target), but I just can’t get enough of the printed silk dress. For starters, I saw this Cacharel dress go on sale ($499, Edit) at one of my favorite e-boutiques, Edit NY, and I d.i.e.d.:
Ugh!  So fantastically vibrant and dramatic — like a Georgia O’Keefe painting.
{Georgia O’Keefe, “Red Poppy,” 1927 — via A History of New York}
I’d add some black-centric enorma-studs (saw these $25 newbies at TopShop and loved ‘em), some fierce black pumps — I saw my Magpie Maven / celebrity crush Rachel Bilson wearing these Brian Atwoods in the blush color, and I was in insta-covet territory ($720, FootCandyShoes), a classy black tote ($517, Couture Candy) with this adorable YSL clutch/wallet tucked inside ($395, YSL), and — for whatever reason, I’m totally feeling a black headband with this get-up (I love France Luxe’s 1″ classic headbands, and have them in black and tortoise — $28, France Luxe):
Also high on the lust-list?  This artful Thakoon dress (on sale for $709, ShopBird):
I’d keep the add-ons to a minimalist minimum — this dress is a busy as a pointillist Canvas, after all.
{Close-up of Georges Seurat’s “La Parade De la Cirque,” 1889, via Wikipedia}
I’d pair with some statement-making earrings ($70, Charm and Chain), a structured envelope clutch in ladylike lavender (works perfectly with the softness and drapiness of the dress — $420, Forzieri), and some classic black pumps (l.o.v.e these new additions to the Vince Camuto line, both in classic black and to.die.for glossy coral — $79, Vince Camuto — and they’re running a special 25% off promo through 12/26!):
For something in a similar color palette with a bit more structure, try this DVF mini ($345, Matches), which I envision pairing with opaque black tights and smart black flats ($100, Dakota Collective) for work:
The above dress reminds me of a darker, more tormented version of Monet’s impressionist style (Monet adapted to the 21st century?) –
{Monet, “Water Lilies,” 1916, via Wikipedia}
I’m thinking that I’d keep the accessories in the gold family, with some cluster enorma-studs (Kendra Scott, $55, Zappos) and a tiered chain necklace ($45, Charm and Chain), my obsession watch of the moment (Freelook, $199, Endless), and a gold-accented, textured bag in the perfect nude/camel shade ($345, Brahmin):
Now, the next item is the big ticket piece: drool, drool, drool.  Missoni.  On sale at The Outnet.  In a radiant peach-on-pink-on-gold palette.  D.i.e.  (Still $819, but hey…it’s Missoni!):
Ugh!  Beyond.  I would keep extras minimal, as the dress should really shine through.  I might add a pair of pearl-adorned studs ($125, Kate Spade) and this delicate-looking pearl-and-gold vintage Trifari bracelet ($180, ASOS):
As for footwear: I’m torn between a sleek and lady-like pointy-toe puppy (like these Rupert Sandersons, which I’ve featured a thousand times over) and some heavier-looking peep-toes ($220, Kurt Geiger), to modernize the aesthetic a bit:
The Marc Jacobs clutch is, well, clutch ($521, My Theresa):
If the bold prints of the above dresses leave you a bit anxiety-stricken, test-drive with an artful, vibrant scarf ($132, Jules B) atop a standard issue all-black ensemble (I am into turtlenecks this season, and I am fa.na.tic about the big bow / front-pleating of this DVF skirt — on sale for $213, Matches):
Finish with some coordinating statement earrings (don’t you loveee these?!  – LK Designs, $146, Pret-A-Beaute), classic black pumps (Loubs, $595, Net-A-Porter), and the covet-worthy Marc Jacobs “Garbo Camille” ($1,850, Barney’s):
Alternately, spruce up your workaday look with a splashy headband (love the tropical vibe on this one — reminds me of a Matisse cut-out! — $22, France Luxe):
{Henri Matisse, “La Gerbe,” 1953, via Henri Matisse}
Can’t you see the headband with a cheery, cherry-red coat in a ladylike silhousette (on sale for $250, Karen Millen)?
{Accent with a black scarf (Love Quotes, $76, Shop Zoe), a chain-handle bag (Kate Spade, $295, Zappos), and some classic black flats (Jeffrey Campbell, on sale for $74, Lori’s Shoes)!
This silky, modern art-esque, abstract-dot top also caught my eye ($340, Rittenhouse), and I’d pair it with straight forward black jeans and nude flats(love these classic Lanvins — $495, Shop Zoe):
Finish with some oversized gold studs (adore these Alexis Bittars — $125, Charm and Chain),  bold, be-jeweled statement cuff ($120, Charm and Chain), and a ladylike ostrich-effect cross-body bag (Marc by Marc Jacobs, $225, Net-A-Porter):
Finally, and — somewhat in the same vein as the Rittenhouse top above, which isn’t exactly painterly, but has a certain artful feel to it, I’d urge the purchase of these darling flats (Kate Spade, $275, Nordstrom), which I’d pair with a  taupe bow clutch (Susan Farber, $322, Couture Candy), and some statement earrings (these puppies are only $10 at Target!):
Perfect with a snug black blazer ($260, TopShop), a hot pink scarf ($114, Farfetch), and some black skinnies!
Ah…already feeling better about my culture-related misdemeanor (shame on me for letting that museum membership lapse!)
Holy Macaron
In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Fur, Jewelry, Neutrals, Romantic, Shoes on December 14, 2010 at 11:58 am
Dear Magpies!  I’m sorry about my week-long hiatus — with the holidays and a frenetic entertaining/social schedule, I’ve been running around like a crazy lady!  In the interim, I’ve been seriously inspired and seriously coveting quite a bit, so look forward to some extra-juicy, extra-luxe, extra-covetable items in the next few posts…including, the delicious confection of looks below, the aftermath of a recent trip to Praline Bakery in Bethesda, MD.  Mr. Magpie and I indulged in their amazing macaroons, and I was instantly in love with their delicateness and vibrancy.  They’re petite and flaky, but they pack a powerful flavor punch and the meringue positively melts in your mouth.  And besides — they’re just plain pretty.
(Of course, the shots above are of macarons from the esteemed Parisian restaurant and tea salon, La Duree, whose meringue-topped treats are the world-renowned house specialty.)  As usual, visual inspiration leads me to fashion inspiration, and this post will accordingly translate the sweet pastel delicacy of the macaroon into wardrobe choices in a yummy palette of cocoa, mint, orange, almond, and lavender.  To begin with: why is lavender so under-used in my life?  I love these ladylike enorma-studs ($160, Ylang23), and envision them paired with a quiet violet dress by esteemed (but somewhat under-the-radar) designer Rachel Comey ($478, Stuart Wright):
Layer a somewhat tougher-looking chain necklace on top ($235, Reiss — the size of the chain links lends it a sense of masculinity), and then have a pair of blush-colored pumps ($79, Vince Camuto) round out the look.  (Or, rather, POINT it out — I’m loving the revival of the Carrie Bradshaw pointy-toe.)  Finish with an elegantly-shaped Marc Jacobs in a beigey-nude ($995, ShopTwigs):
Don’t you die over the gold locket?  Oh, the details.  For weekend wear, I’m liking the idea of a fun little statement necklace (this one is only $10 at Old Navy!) with this Anna Molinari faux-crushed-fur sweater ($165, TheOutnet) and some skinnies:
Finish with a lavender scarf ($180, Vionnet Boutique) and a pair of ladylike flats, like these Kurt Geigers (on sale for $44, Kurt Geiger):
For winter months, warm things up with a pair of white fur earmuffs ($145, Net-A-Porter) and a ruffle-accented charcoal jacket (how darling and happily affordable is this find?! — $109, Heery’s)?
Another pitch-perfect weekend look?  A heathered lavender “dressed up” sweatshirt ($24, AE) topped with some sparkling statement earrings ($95, Kate Spade), a funky oversized pendant necklace (Lizzie Fortunato, $160, Kirna Zabete), and a taupe scarf ($19, Alloy):
Finish with some tassel-topped flats ($130, Jildor) in versatile nude-camel:
Top it off with this ruffly statement coat (I die — 3.1 Phillip Lim, on sale for $1,170, Net-A-Porter) and an of-the-moment putty-colored hobo (l.o.v.e. playing creamy-white off of taupey-greige — on sale for $227, Elaine Turner):
Alternately, for something a bit dressier — but a touch more grounded — how much do you adore this elegantly draped Malene Berger skirt ($204, MyWardrobe), which I’d pair with a lady-like bow-front top (on final sale for $45, Steven Alan):
I’d top with this accented chain necklace ($85, Old Soul New Heart) and a pair of unexpectedly fierce coffee-colored platforms (they balance the femininity of the rest of the ensemble — $111, Zappos):
The i.deal tote would be this slick Fendi ($3,320, Barney’s) — a girl can dream…
For work, nothing is classier than this creamy crepe shift dress (Joseph, $453, My Wardrobe), especially paired with an eye-catching, lace-effect statement necklace (in a recent interview, jewelry designer Ranjana Khan said: “People should be able to see your jewelry from across the room — not just across the table.”  Love it.  I’ve been upping the ante on the scale of my statement pieces ever since!  The necklace below is Elizabeth Cole, $680, Vionnet):
I’d pair with some unexpected snakeskin flats in a fetching blush tone (Vera Wang, $195, Nordstrom) — I say “unexpected” not because of the color palette but because the flats take the look to a decidedly more casual — but just as refined — place, especially when finished with the boxy-chic Anya Hindmarch “Carker” tote ($995, Net-A-Porter):
Love the burnished, bronzey-gold with the blush and cream.  I’d add to the yummy-looking get-up with a blush pink wool cardigan (it was 22 degrees when I left home today, so I shudder at the thought of bare shoulders — Theory, $285, Net-A-Porter) and an oversized, organic-looking rose quartz ring ($220, Max and Chloe) — all beneath a lovely ladylike topcoat ($149, Oasis):
The perfect confection, n’est-ce pas?  And finally, as a perfect counterpoint to all the pink-blush-taupe-cocoa colors above, how about a little mint green?  I’ve recently been increasingly endeared to this undervalued color (as I have to lavender).  It can really cause quite the stir.  Why not surprise yourself by tucking your requisite white blouse (Joseph, $295, Net-A-Porter) into an elegantly-draped skirt (on sale for $37!, TheOutnet):
A decidedly ladylike but statement-making collar necklace with a jade enhancer is the perfect add-on ($120, Amrita Singh), especially alongside some vintage Chanel clips ($700, Aloha Rag) and a
You could go one of two ways with the shoes and sweater combo: either take things to a decidedly modern place by adding black to the mix (I’m thinking slick black pumps and a crisp, tailored black blazer — very Rachel Bilson), or stick to the lighter palette by finishing with cream/soft pink/blush-toned pumps and a frilly pale pink sweater.  Both are lovely options.  Finally — for pure fashion folly — I daydream about a soft-toned evening look centering around this unbelievable Phillip Lim number ($875, Net-A-Porter):
I’d finish it with sparkling ear candy (with a dress this gorgeous, no one would ever suspect that your bling is costume — $55, Carolee), an OMG champagne-colored fur swing coat (Geraldine, $1,475, Matches), the perfect pair of soft pink pumps ($569, MyTheresa), and my favorite clutch of the season (so retro, so perfect! – $345, Kate Spade):
To.die.for.  Serious fashion craving!
The Royal Treatment
In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Neutrals, Pop of Red, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather on November 23, 2010 at 10:20 am
If you haven’t yet had your fix of media on the recent engagement of Prince William to Kate Middleton — well, join the club.  I’ve been following the recently betrothed couple with great interest, especially after I watched — with rapt attention — their first news interview, in which a slightly nervous, clearly excited, and somewhat cheeky Kate responds to pointed questions about her upcoming nuptials, plans for children, and potential role as queen of England.  There was something so endearing and candid about her somewhat flustered responses — especially as a counterpoint to Prince William’s more rehearsed, polished delivery.  I’m in insta-fan, especially in light of her accessible fashion sense.  I like the idea that someone so frequently thrust into the spotlight can retain a down-to-earth, level-headed sartorial sensibility — the fact that she seems to stay true to a consistent (slightly conservative, slightly preppy, slightly downtown-chic) “look” points to an admirable self-assuredness.  And that’s always something that deserves the — well, royal treatment.
The above outfit may seem a bit “everyday” but I love everything about it — the durable tote, the solid black getup.  And Kate is queen when it comes to toppers/outerwear.  Get the look by pairing your own canvas weekender ($395, Calypso-Celle), a “country” coat (Barbour is the classic, but there’s something pitch-perfect about this Steven Alan slicker — $348, Steven Alan) , some black skinnies, and some unfussy black flat boots ($450, Simply Soles):
She’s also frequently spotted in blazers — something likes this tweed blazer seems to be up her alley ($325, J. Crew), paired with white skinnies (she rocks them in a major way):
Finish with this  luxe leather tote ($285, Foley and Corinna) and coordinating, polished riding boots ($198, Vince Camuto):
Perfect for the occasional polo match.  She’s also been spotted featuring her signature white skinnies in slightly less buttoned-up ensembles –
Go for it yourself with a breezy tunic (on sale for $129, Calypso) and your white skinnies:
While she might be inclined towards ivory or nude-colored flats, I like the idea of finishing with a chic python print flat (Ralph Lauren, $69, Macy’s) and this gorgeous putty satchel (l.o.v.e. the tassel accent — why am I so drawn to the tassel?! — $325, Elaine Turner):
(Love the concert of nudes/ivories/whites in this get-up.  So chic.)  You’ll note that I’ve been exercising some very un-magpie restraint in terms of jewelry/accessory add-ons: Ms. Middleton is rarely seen without a ladylike watch (she sports something like this seriously discounted Stuhrling timepiece — only $110, Endless)…but that’s about as far as she goes.
For more formal events, she gravitates towards v-neck wrap dresses — something like this DVF in a cheering Hermes-esque orange would probably be up her alley ($365, Diane Von Furstenberg):
Orange can be difficult to match with accessories, but a pair of nude pumps never do you wrong, and these puppies are perfection (Rupert Sanderson, $586, MyTheresa):She looked positively regal in the royal blue dress (by Issa — now sold out) she wore for her engagement announcement — what a perfect way of showcasing her sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring (famously, the bauble was Princess Di’s engagement ring as well)!
Achieve a similar look with this belted Milly dress ($420, StyleBop) and a pair of suede heels (the Choo “Cosmics” are a new favorite of mine — just enough of a platform to be fierce, without looking vampy/trampy  — $695, Net-A-Porter):
(These less expensive — $125! — and slightly more aggressive sueded TopShop platforms are another viable option.) If you’re starstruck by the drama of her sapphire dress, check out this Piccadilly Pleats Dress ($158, Madewell):
She might finish with a black tuxedo jacket and an unfussy black clutch, as she did earlier this year.  Alternately, if you’re into the Halston-era vibe she’s channeling in her jersey blue dress, opt for the Halston Heritage number that caused such an uproar last season in a glimmering gem tone, like this emerald or this ruby ($354, MyTheresa):
Layer an ivory wool coat — I adore the version she’s sporting below — atop ($230, John Lewis):
Alternately, complete the layered look above by pairing your ivory topper with a silky, long-sleeved dress ($138, Madewell), some tights ($20, Lori’s Shoes), and a pair of sueded, low-heeled boots ($298, Madewell)
Love the idea of an approachable member of the royal family — chin chin to the newly engaged!
