Confetti

In Accessories, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, White on April 24, 2013 at 11:12 am

First – the title of this post makes my mouth water for a confetti sprinkle cupcake.  You know — the super-fake, non-organic, boxed Pillsbury mix?  Yum.

Second – fresh whites paired with pops of BRIGHT confetti color.  That’s what I want right now.  Partly inspired by these cheery seaside photos (image 1; image 2 — both $19+ depending on size and frame) from Minagraphy.  Slightly reminiscent to me of Maison Gray’s genius, but at a fraction of the prix.

For example, I am loving this cheery aqua necklace (Hyla Dewitt, $130) with this great, slightly hippy-dippie macrame dress ($150 — loves.  Coachella chic, ladies.)

Or, maybe a little white-on-white action in the form of this pair of white scalloped shorts ($60) and this beautiful gauzy blouse ($195), accented with this simple cord-and-bead necklace ($33! — love Etsy):

And now for the POW.  I like them — unexpectedly — with these pointy toed ombre neon snakeskin flats (Loeffler Randall, $275), which I would wear every day of the week and twice on Tuesday…need.

AND this mega-great bag in stark white ($308):

Or: this adorbs pink-and-white dress ($140; love the shape — keeps it from being too cutesy) with this phenom oh-so-covetable marble and crystal stunner ($68 — love when necklaces incorporate unusual materials like wood, marble, etc.):

The Round-Up

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Brights!, Denim, Jewelry, Magpie Nest, Pastels, Shoes, White on April 5, 2013 at 10:35 am

We made it.  Friday.  Yes.  Done.  AND the winner of the bomb giveaway is listed at the bottom of this post…!

Some “tings” I’ve been obsessing over lately, in no meaningful order…

COVET1I finally abandoned Proactiv face wash (see ya, teenage years — probably appropriate as I am in my late-20s…) for Soap + Glory’s face wash.  Ob.sessed.  I told you awhile ago that I thought I’d be all “adult” and switch to Laura Mercier’s beautifully packaged cleansing series, but it just wasn’t right for me (read: my first breakout since I was 13 — LITERALLY.  Cue panic.) and I instantly ran back to my loyal Proactiv.  Then I discovered Soap + Glory’s face wash through a sample I received.  Done deal.  First, I LOVE the soapy, old-school scent.  I know some people are sensitive to fragrance, but the smell makes me feel so fresh and so clean, clean (*Outkast reference).  Second, it’s inexpensive!  (Well, compared to cosmetic line analogs.)  $16 for a big tube that lasts forevs.  And finally, it’s kept my skin clean and blemish-free for weeks now.  So: ignore the teeny-bopper packaging (it reminds me of Clearasil or something) and do it.

Screen Shot 2013-04-05 at 8.01.34 AM

COVET2After taking Alaina K.’s home tour in The Everygirl, I sorta kinda wished I had a space that I could decorate in the girliest of girly ways.  Sorry, Mr. Magpie.  (Do you love her apartment?!  I’m dying over how she redesigned the bathroom.  Black, white, gold.  Bam.)  One decorating influence that’s new-to-me and that I saw in some of her styling (and that of other well-appointed homes) is the Moroccan-inspired touch.  I’d love, for example, some of these block-printed pillows (ABC Home, $140), or this punchy woven rug (Dash + Albert, $94+ depending on size):

I want.  And I want in all pink and purple colors.

COVET3Straightforward, but this tee is on sale for $35, plus 30% off.  Love the colors.  And, you know, I love me some stripes.  Pair with the perfect beachy necklace (Suzanna Dai, $425) and glossy gold sandals ($69):

COVET4

I don’t know if it’s because I just booked a trip to my parents’ winter home in FL, but I’m having a minor love affair with all things palm right now…

Palm{Gold earrings: $2,500, Scully + Scully; coral top: $105, Scotch + Soda; “Pina Colada” sandal: $995, Aquazzura; palm clutch: $460, Lizzie Fortunato}

COVET5Random, but I’m smitten with these pencils ($12/set), adorned with cute phrases/sayings on the sides.  Total indulgence, but I kind of want to snap them all up and display them on my desktop in two clusters in two separate pen cups.

Screen Shot 2013-04-05 at 8.54.34 AM Screen Shot 2013-04-05 at 8.54.44 AM Screen Shot 2013-04-05 at 8.54.55 AM

COVET6Oh, Paris.  Tu me manques.  I have been dreaming of a trip to my favorite city in the universe for the past few months in particular, so I’ve been on a hunt for some artwork that would fill the void.  I feel like a lot of “Paris” artwork is super-cheesy – great, another Eiffel tower sketch.  It’s almost like a touristy sub-genre in the art field.  Then I found the Paris Print Shop, which I loved because the photography sets out to capture the nooks and crannies of the city rather than the big tourist attractions, and the shop suggests that you group your artwork by color, which makes the entire operation seem a bit more sophisticated.  I very seriously contemplated buying a group of four or eight for the wall of our guest room, and was leaning towards the mint/aqua collection given the colors in our bedding.  (I ended up deciding to go with a set of vintage Audubon bird prints that I had framed; I knew Mr. Magpie would prefer them and they lent the room a much-needed “vintage” flair.)  Still, I’m hemming and hawing over where I could squeeze these into our apartment and what color I might go with.  (I’ve been thinking about reupholstering our kitchen stools with this Rubie Green fabric, so maybe the yellow would look lovely on the wall behind them?)

Oh, swoon.

COVET7So, I mentioned my fixation with palm prints at the moment, and this leaf-print blazer (Joie, $298) is no exception.  Die.  I’d wear it over a little white dress or maybe with white skinnies, some linen-and-leather wedges ($139), and this BANANAS OUT OF CONTROL AMAZING necklace ($2,485…dream on):

Screen Shot 2013-04-05 at 9.20.45 AM

COVET8I believe I may have already waxed poetic about this, but I snapped up Nars’ Roman Holiday lipstick ($26) and it is the PERFECT everyday spring shade.  Natural but pretty.

nars

And that about does it, my love bugs.  Except for…DRUMROLL, PLEASE!  The winner of my giveaway!  Let me just say that I l.o.v.e.d. reading all of your responses / what you’d wear things with.  You are such a chic bunch of chicas.  The winner is: SHANA!  (She plans to wear it with the exact dress that Kate Middleton owns from ASOS.)  Shana, please email me at jennifer@thefashionmagpie.com so we can arrange shipping.

A biggggg thanks to Dawn B. for arranging this generous giveaway!

***Spoiler alert: This post ends with a FAB giveaway for an amazing necklace…soooo make sure you read to the very end.***

Oh, hello, April.  So, so happy to see you and your attendant warmer weather.  It was nearly 60 degrees when Mr. Magpie and I landed in Chicago yesterday after spending the weekend with our families in D.C.  It’s making me want to buy a lot of warm-weather things in my favorite pastel-meets-bright palette (read: lots of lavender with accents in chartreuse and coral).  For starters, I love these eyelet shorts ($69) with this blousy top (DVF, $132) and this chunky necklace ($333):

OK, hang on to your hats, because here is a pastiche of a post for your Friday morning consumption.  Read: very disorganized.

COVET1Did anyone see “Anna Karenina”?  I was underwhelmed.  Or rather, I was visually overwhelmed throughout the movie (quite the spectacle), but the net effect left me neutral.  One critic pointed out that the book’s strength is the humanity that Tolstoy affords each of his characters.  The characters in the movie, by contrast, feel glassed off, remote — it’s hard to connect to them given the visual pageantry carouseling (new verb, y’all) before your eyes, and the result is a disconnected spectatorship.

But.  Mama mia, did I love the costumes.  Though I drooled over the ball gowns, my favorite looks were the fur-and-diamond-laden outfits Anna wore while traveling:

What’s not to love?  Since the movie, I’ve convinced myself I need a fur hat, ala:

My top picks: 1) Borsalino, $1,103; 2) Gilly Forge, $119; and 3) also Gilly Forge, also $119.

Any other takers?

COVET2

Just learned about a new shopping site called The Editorialist.  I think it might be taking itself a little too seriously, purportedly “combining content with commerce”…which is what lots of magazines and blogs have done for years on end at this point, but there are some interesting new labels, including Lele Sadoughi.  Check out this necklace ($485) from her collezioni!

Screen Shot 2013-02-28 at 11.54.25 AM

COVET3Mr. Mags and I plan to buy a home this summer when our lease is up — exciting!  Of course, Mr. Magpie is looking forward to building a smokehouse in our backyard so he can smoke bacon and salmon and lots of other treats, and I’m ecstatic that I can paint and wallpaper my walls!  I have long wanted to use wallpaper in a powder room or perhaps on the backsplash of a built-in book-case or bar nook.  Somewhere small.  I LOVE so many of the patterns from Hygge + West.  Don’t you love these gold ones (here + here — $125/roll)?  So glam.  I may have to bookmark these for use in my office, which I envision outfitting primarily in lavender, because I don’t think Mr. Magpie will be too enamored of them.

Screen Shot 2013-02-28 at 12.17.06 PM Screen Shot 2013-02-28 at 12.21.22 PM

I’m also loving this seahorse pattern for a child’s room.  To die.

COVET4I love the cover design of this coffee table fashion book ($41).  I think it’d look lovely stacked on a desk with a few other items in glossy gold.

COVET5While we’re looking at foil/gold, I gotta share these cheeky sweatshirts from Brian Lichtenberg ($98), which riff on the high-fashion house labels of Hermes and Celine.

COVET6This is truly neither here nor there, but ever since my chic little sis told me she was eyeing a jumpsuit in sleek black crepe de chine, I have been eying them curiously myself (and so have some of you readers, it turns out — I JUST received a request for jumpsuit advice from one of you darlings last night!  Something is in the ether…).  Wouldn’t you know it — the style I REALLY want is Valentino, and costs $10K.  Ha.  But imagine…with a hot pink necklace ($138) and some funky sandals (LK Bennett, $475):

I’m thinking it’d look good in the black + white corner of my bedroom…

…but Mr. Magpie might kill me if I add one more “girly” thing to the mix.  Poor chap.  Speaking of poor chaps, don’t even TALK to me about the finale of Downton Abbey, which I just saw this week with my littlest sassafras sister.  I can’t even talk about it.  I’m not so much sad as enraged.  What a cheap curtsey out of the season.

How amazing is this Phillip Lim coat ($1,095)?!

Coloratura

In Beach Wear, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Pastels, Shoes, Sundresses, White on February 28, 2013 at 10:01 am

One of my love bugs mentioned in a comment on a recent post that she has been stockpiling lots of colorful goodies in her closet for spring, whenever spring decides to rear her lovely head.  I’m teetering dangerously on the edge of following suit — I keep wanting to buy everything on the Calypso St. Barth site (i.e., all things beachy/summery, with LOTS of great spring colors).  My top pick from their collection?  This flowy hi-lo dress ($450). BA.NA.NAS.  I’m imagining myself (or a very tall, tanned version of myself) wearing this with my hair all beach wavy.

Screen Shot 2013-02-27 at 4.55.43 PM

I’m not afraid of color — are you?!  Good.  Check out these ultra-covetable Thierry Lasry shades, and let’s both wish we had enough dough to drop $475 on a pair of sunnies.

I like them with my favorite color combo du jour — lavender, in the form of this silky little top (on sale for $69), and BRIGHT orange, in the form of this necklace (on sale for $89), with white jeans and perfect metallic sandals (Rebecca Minkoff, $165):

Screen Shot 2013-02-27 at 5.50.40 PM

The coup de gras?!  These unexpected, FAB green tootsies by the ever-imaginative Charlotte Olympia ($901).  I know they are borderline cray-cray, but I think you can rock them OUT.

{These shoes remind me of a pair of pillows that I considered purchasing for our nest — isn’t this palm frond pattern BEYOND?! I ended up with this pattern instead to incorporate more colors into our living room, and sweat them in a serious way.  Does anyone else still use the word “sweat” as a verb, or am I the only 90s chickadee who uses that term?!}  This conversation in turn reminds me of these AMAZING C. Wonder pillows ($38 a pop) that I discovered recently.  LOVE this print.

Screen Shot 2013-02-27 at 6.13.51 PM

Since the color scheme (and warm weather clothing) above are tres Palm Beach chic, I gotta conclude with this funky little letterpress flamingo print ($16) — cute no?!

This would look so precious mixed in with other prints in a gallery wall, all framed in pristine white.  Lovely.  And if you want to bring that flamingo print to life, check out this darling flamingo print two-piece from Tory Burch ($135 for top; $95 for bottom): sanib

Packing a Punch

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, White on February 26, 2013 at 10:38 am

Here’s a haiku* for you:

My parents have a winter home in Florida.

They have spent the better part of the past few weeks there.

I am horribly jealous.

Blarg.  I am so sick of jamming my legs into jeans and boots.  Jeans and boots.  Jeans and boots. Lather, rinse, repeat.  (Although I did manage to recently score these Loeffler Randall wonders on RIDIC sale, so I am not quite as furious about the boots part.) *For my lit ladies out there: I do know that this is not, in the strict sense, a haiku.  FYI.  In case you’re thinking I failed my poetry seminars.  And while I have your attention, have any of you read “Flaubert’s Parrot” by Julian Barnes?  Some thoughts: A) Reading this book has rekindled my love of literature — have not felt so excited about a book in a long time; B) This book led me on an Amazon binge and I wound up with Gustave’s letters, volume 1; Gustave’s “A Simple Heart”; and George Sand’s “Indiana.”  I literally cannot read quickly enough – so excited to digest it all; and C) Am contemplating reading Sartre’s “Family Idiot,” a study of Flaubert, afterward, but almost feel that without the support of a classroom discussion, I’ll drown.  Sartre scares me almost as much as Hegel, who tormented me in graduate school.  If I need to draw diagrams to understand a paragraph of prose, I find myself distressed.  One last footnote, for those of you wondering: “Why Flaubert?”  Well, Barnes will quickly cultivate and nurture a love affair with his genius in his book, which is a curious blend of lit crit, autobiography (presumably), and fiction.  Barnes’ summary of Gustave?

“The hermit of Croisset.  The first modern novelist.  The father of Realism.  The butcher of Romanticism.  The pontoon bridge linking Balzac to Joyce.  The precursor of Proust.  The bear in his lair.  The bourgeois bourgeoisophobe.  In Egypt, ‘the father of the Moustache.’..all these titles were acquired by a man indifferent to ennobling forms of address.  ‘Honours dishonour, titles degrade, employment stupefies.”

I mean — anyone else giddy as a gumdrop reading this?  Barnes packs a powerful punch in  his writing — so dense, so visual.  Not a word out of place — “the pontoon bridge.”  Ah!  In love!

So, from geeking out over a book to geeking out over a different form of artistry: let’s talk about fashion that packs a punch and that I would happily throw in a suitcase on my way to FL.  (Mom and Dad, don’t be surprised if I show up on your doorstep in sunny Naples.)  First: I know it’s pricey but I wantttt this blouse (Simone Rocha, $1,095), and I’d wear it with this tone-on-tone necklace ($128), white skinnies, and some platinum sandals (these are kids’ sized, but they run very large…I can fit into them…$35):

And I know I’ve posted a lot about blue color schemes.  But, here I am again, with more.  I just keep tripping over great styles and I can’t help but feature.  Hope you’re into this moody hue as well.  What about this cool tye-dye dress ($235), for example?  Very Kate Bosworth at Coachella, circa 2011.  Especially finished with this amazing Kelly Wearstler pendant ($385):

Bright Eyes

In Accessories, Brights!, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Pastels, Shoes on February 6, 2013 at 12:40 pm

Did I tell you that last Friday, weather.com said it “felt like -19″ outside when I woke up?  Negative 19, people.  Negative. Nineteen.  As my bestie put it: “I have no frame of reference for what -19 feels like.”  Neither do I.  Nor do I want one.

I’ve been fomenting my own rebellion against the weather by wearing the brightest clothes I own.  Last week, I dusted off my hot pink jeans and pulled out a blue-and-neon-yellow LemLem style scarf and wore them with reckless abandon.  Boom goes the dynamite.  (Or, this act of vengeance did nothing to curb the cold temps.)

I shouldn’t be so grouchy — I do love the fact that it snowed for a few days in a row this past week.  Chicago is beautiful in the snow, and I love the view from our bedroom when it’s snowing.  We have glass doors that look out onto a patio in our bedroom and it’s snuggly to watch the snow fall at night.  It also meant that Mr. Magpie and I “stayed in” most of the weekend, cooking, drinking wine, and watching a million movies.  (We saw “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” and “End of Watch” in the span of 24 hours.  Lame or impressive?  Have you seen any of these?  Thoughts, please.)

But, to the point at hand: BRIGHT separates to improve my spirits.  First — how much do we love this peplum top in the cheeriest neon ever (Tibi, $385)?  Temper with rugged jeans (Current/Elliott’s “The Stiletto,” $228) and finish with a bright coral necklace ($88) and these strappy sandals ($100):

Hodge Podge

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Gold, Home Decor, Jewelry, Pastels, Shoes, Sundresses, White on January 25, 2013 at 10:23 am

Welcome to the weekly circus — the round of up items I have my (apparently A.D.D.-ridden) eyes on at the moment.  A few of you have told me that you like this kind of “everything but the kitchen sink” post a lot, so I’ll keep ‘em coming.  Ready, set, go.

COVET1The x-based bench is not a new phenomenon by any stretch of the imagination.  I’m pretty sure that every bloggerina in the universe owns a pair, along with ikat pillows, a chevron rug, and a gallery wall.  (Just telling it like it is.)  So in a sense I’m a little bashful that this is my number one stunna this week, because I just read an interesting interview with Jamie Meares of Furbish Studio {I love that site a little too much…I snagged these puppies and this funky little doo-dad most recently}, the takeaway of which was: “Be yourself.  Stop copy-catting.” {The other takeaway is that she studied Literature as an undergrad.  Hells yeah, humanities!  Here’s to application-less undergrad degrees and how they can sometimes prove not so useless!}  Still.  When I saw that, I began second-guessing my plans to make a soft-pitch to Mr. Magpie that we definitely, definitely, definitely need a pair of coral x-based ottomans in our living room in order to introduce some color and offset the lovely hue in our new pillows.  But then I looked at the x-based ottomans again and really really wanted them, so here they are, at two price points (Hi: Serena and Lily, $650; lo: Ballard Designs, $189+ depending on fabric)

hilo

And in case you’re wondering what the big fuss with these x-based ottomans is, check out these glam set-ups prominently featuring these little guys:

Oh, and check out the uber-chic and yet attainable/livable digs of fellow Chicagoan Nathalie of Mint Love Social Club.  Those $60 x ottomans?  Get OUTTA here.  I wish they were still available.  Harrumph.

COVET2While we’re talking house (I’m obsessed right now — as I said, I go in fits and starts, wanting to buy a million things all at the same time to make some upgrades and then living with it for a few months before getting the decorating bug again), can we just chat quickly about how cool these lucite letters ($95 apiece) from her ladyship Tory Burch are?!

tb1Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 2.52.37 PM Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 2.52.43 PMCOVET3I love this dotted, tasseled scarf from DVF ($177).  I imagine wearing it as a sarong with HUGE (we’re talking face-shield-level) black shades on the beach and feeling very smug about it.

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 2.56.15 PM

COVET4Can I tell you a secret?  I started using some serious anti-aging products January 1st of this year.  A New Year’s resolution, if you will.  I know I still look very young — I’m carded more often than not, and — this is not a lie — I was once mistaken for a 12-year-old child when I was 21 years old.  So.  If I’m projecting an age that’s actually a decade my junior, why would I be worried about aging?  The issue is the very beginning of wrinkles.  ACK.  I’m 28, and I am starting to see wrinkles.  What.  So I pulled out the big guns and started using Stri-Vectin Intensive Concentrate for Stretch Marks and Wrinkles ($69) on the recommendation of a girlfriend of mine.  I’m liking what I see so far, though I’ll be the first to admit that I’m prone to the placebo effect, i.e., thinking that things are happening just because I think they should be.  (Also, I really wish Stri-Vectin would revisit their marketing and packaging decisions.  I know they’re trying to pitch a “science-forward”/”clinical study” feel, but it kind of makes me think I’m taking medicine, and I hate medicine.  And I like pretty packages that I can display proudly in my medicine cabinet rather than bury at the back of a jammed drawer.  Sorry, Stri-Vectin, you’ll be relegated to bottom of the drawer status until I see a classy new package.)  Anyhoo, all of this is to say I’ve also been open to testing out facial products other than Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer (which I’ve cherished for a decade now), and this Trish McEvoy multi-purpose product is now on my radar ($75):

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 2.59.08 PM

What do you use?  Any suggestions?

COVET5I know I just featured a pair of Erickson Beamon’s earrings in a recent covet list, but these ($360) are also phenom.  UGHHH.  I love.

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 3.11.46 PMI’m so into lavender these days — I want lavender jeans, lavender pajamas, lavender walls, a lavender pencil skirt, lavender heels…

COVET6Case in point: this Alice and Olivia wonder ($495).  The texture is knit (like a sweater) – so fab!

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 3.19.50 PM Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 3.19.57 PM

I feel like this dress is so not my style these days, but I just couldn’t get over the perfect design.  Feminine in the front, a hint of sexy in the back.  The genius/unusual fabrication and color choice.  Ahh.  A breath of fresh (spring) air, n’est-ce pas?  Perfect for a bridal shower, a late winter/early spring wedding with silver/lucite/pink accents.  Too good.

COVET7Now, I don’t need any other small leather accessories (seriously…never again in my life), but this Smythson card carrier ($280) is so lovely.  I love all of the details.

WALLETCOVET8Inspired by this post on La Dolce Vita, I’ve been craving a tropical getaway with lots of palm trees.  I want to wear these dramatic earrings (House of Lavande, $918), with this breezy white mini (to die for — $180), and these outrageous Charlotte Olympias, just for kicks (on sale for $622) — though you probably couldn’t walk, let alone kick, in those shoes).

palmCOVET9One of my favorite Christmas gifts from Mr. Magpie was an Aerolatte frother ($19).  I was feeling tremendous guilt for spending $4.50 or whatever obscene price Starbucks is currently charging for their skinny lattes when Mr. Magpie would so kindly make me coffee at home every morning.  But sometimes a girl just wants a latte.  Problem solved: with this little gadget, I heat up my skim milk on the stovetop or in the microwave, use this little doo-dad until it froths up, and then pour it into my coffee with some splenda.  New morning ritual.

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 3.44.46 PM

COVET10

And to cap it all off with something truly left-field, this limited edition Cook + Gates duffel ($158) is just the sort of unexpected accessory you’d find on the arm of a REALLY cool fashionista, kind of like the first time we all saw the Cambridge Satchel and were like, “Uh, woahhhhh.  Someone’s got it poppin‘.” (Nicki Minaj voice.)  And now we’re bored of that.

I was just thumbing through my Pinterest account for some inspiration and found myself very much drawn to the crisp, high-contrast items I’d pinned.  Items like this boxy white top (A.P.C., on sale for $97), paired with blue Minnies ($89) and a Holst + Lee stunner ($510), topped off (footed off?) with a pair of woven flats (Rebecca Minkoff, $225):

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Florals, Fresh Combos, Gold, Home Decor, Jewelry, Nautical, Pastels, Shoes, White on January 18, 2013 at 10:00 am

This month has been tough, y’all.  After the Extravagance (yes, capital E is warranted) of the holidays, I felt like I needed to reign it in and “shop my closet.”  (Blech. Hate that phrase. One of the fashion glossies I was flipping through on the elliptical the other day proclaimed: “It’s so fun to shop your closet!”  Ew.  People that say it’s fun must either a) be Olivia Palermo, or b) be lying to themselves.)  But there are so.so. many things that are vying for my attention and my wallet…what is a girl to do?  (P.S. Thanks, Caroline, for pointing out that the ALC dress I was swooning over is on sale for $199 at the Outnet.  I’m almost barfing I want it so badly.  Sick image, I apologize.)  On this week’s radar?

COVET1Just when you thought you’d seen enough sloafers to satisfy you for the rest of eternity, the coolest of the pack emerge.  Yes.  These Missoni puppies ($575) are It.  I die over them.  I die.  Can you imagine pairing them with just a simple navy blazer and white jeans?!

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 7.57.11 PM

Love the color, love the texture, love pattern.  And kind of love that they don’t scream Missoni.

COVET2

I’ve been on the hunt for a great mini cross-body in a fun color for the upcoming spring season.  I had this amazing white one from Rebecca Minkoff, but it got all rubbed up and dirty, and now bears a certain air of dinginess that I just can’t permit.  These J. Crew minis ($148) will be hard to pass up.

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 7.59.36 PM Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 7.59.42 PM Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 7.59.47 PM

That yellow one is calling my name.  Imagine it popping against a denim shirt or a striped blouse.  Incroyable.

COVET3

I’m very sad about this.  I found the rug of my dreams ($140+ depending on size) and it was sold out.  Do you love?!  I know that oriental rugs are the jam, but I often find them to be a little ornate for my current decorating style.  The color and scale of pattern in the one below is just.perfect.

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 8.02.50 PM

It might be for the best.  Mr. Magpie may have thrown a small fit when I asked him to hang two new pieces of wall art in our bedroom, as one was a fashion drawing my uber-talented baby sister (similar one from Jessica Durrant below — $25) had sketched for me and the other was this ink-and-paper sketch of the L’Arc de Triomphe ($50).

black

arc

Oops.  I think I may need to dial back on the femininity.  On the upside, he promised that when we buy a house, I could have my own office and paint it pink if I so desired.  I won’t, though — I am really into lavender right now.  I think I want a lilac-hued office accented with gold and white.  But that’s a story for another day.  And if that rug above had been available, I may have been inclined to change that plan of action.

COVET4Every few months, I want to invest in new pajamas.  This pair by Equipment ($388) is insanely overpriced…a little scary, in fact…but they look oh-so-cozy.  And the print is perfection.

HI

But…I will probably end up with these fun little lobster jammies ($12).  Affordable, cute, done.

LOCOVET5I love new coffee table / bookshelf eye candy.  Ours tend to center on food — we probably have 100 cookbooks between the two of us — so this beautiful modern + contemporary art book ($30) would be a welcome change of pace.

I’d like it situated amongst some other fun accents, like a  pair of foos ($58 — I’m obsessed.) in white and these funky bolster pillows in retro-chic fabric ($210):

COVET6Pastels are gonna be huge this spring — lavender, mint, pale pink.  Boom.  This Gap tote ($110) is the perfect way to hit the trend without over-committing.  Also, I just love the unfussy simplicity.

Stripes are basically a neutral for me.  I own more stripes than you could shake a stick at (…?  Never understood that colloquialism, so thought I’d take it out for a spin.)  I love the breezy, easy-on fit of this silky tank ($98), which is just CALLING for summer.  Hit the pastel trend with some coral jeans (J. Brand, $178) and some gilded gladiators ($138):

Obsessed with all things Erickson Beamon, but especially this darling pair of enorma-studs ($315).  I’d wear with everything — my cream nubby Chanel-esque tweed jacket; a simple denim shirt – and – jeans combo; a sheath; a feminine blouse and skinnies.  Ah.  Need.

You should mos’ def’ check out the entire Biscuit Home site — the prettiest bedding, including amazing crib sheets for those mamas out there (how adorbs is this bicycle print for a little boy, or this beautiful floral for une petite fille?) and these upholstered headboards are just too good.  UGH.

COVET10I love the composition and colors in this Alison Cooley print ($100).  I wish that the original was available — definitely something I’d consider splurging on.  It would look so lovely in my (oh so girly) room, which has a whole corner full of artwork in peachy-pink, black, and gold.

Crisp

In Accessories, Brights!, Denim, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Leopard, Pastels, Shoes on January 9, 2013 at 10:30 am

For some reason I woke up yesterday wanting to wear a crisp, pristine, white button-down with some classic, dark-wash skinnies.  This was an unfortunate fashion revelation because I’m working in D.C. for the week, and my wardrobe lives in Chicago.  So instead, I put together this post outlining crisp separates for this heavy-sweater-weather.  I love this Proenza Schouler colorblocked number ($695) –

– dreamy, and very Taylor Tomasi-Hill, with these phenom laser-cut sandals (again, Sophia Webster ruling lives — $695)

Not sure if this Jerome Dreyfuss bag ($1,398) isn’t a little too matchy-matchy, but I don’t care…too pretty to care!

For a truly classic look along the lines I woke up imagining, pair a crisp white top ($118) with a funky statement necklace (Ranjana Khan, $438), denim skinnies and ponyhair flats (Matt Bernson, $195):

Lots of street stylin folks have been wearing printed pants lately, and I’m curious about testing the waters.  I’d go slow with these relatively unscary Opening Ceremony trousers ($425), a sleeveless white blouse (Joie, $188), a “rosary” necklace (Tory Burch, $225), and pink suede pumps (Zanotti, $495):

Getaway

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Beauty Products, Brights!, Denim, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes on December 31, 2012 at 10:41 am

Preface: I know it’s NYE, and I am flat out not addressing it in the post below.  I began to conceptualize a post on glittery frocks but then thought — eh.  My chic peas will already have their outfits purchased/planned/in the bag/etc., so it’s a litttttle late to wax poetic over the newest duds on the rack.  Mr. Magpie and I have officially entered old person-dom and have decided to approach this NYE a little differently: we splurged on expensive champagne, caviar + blinis, lobster, and some oysters {and I’ll be making this deliciousness as a side, and went ahead and made a classic cheesecake yesterday for indulgent dessert}, and are staying in with old movies and party hats.  {That doesn’t mean I’m not getting dolled up.  I’ll be wearing this.}  Anyway — have a happy, safe New Year, whatever you’re doing!

*********************

The other night, Mr. Magpie casually asked me: “Where do you want to go on vacation this year?”  Eee!  I hadn’t even been thinking about a getaway, but now the seed has been planted.  (We shall see, though.  Between work trips, bachelorettes, bridal showers, and weddings, I have at least two trips a month from here until eternity, it feels like!  Staying home has become a welcome respite.)  Still.  I’m ready to pack mes valises (I’d love a set of Globetrotter suitcases — merci, merci!) and head somewhere tropical.

Faute de Mieux

In Accessories, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Fresh Combos, Gold, Home Decor, Pop of Red, Shoes on December 14, 2012 at 10:26 am

The French phrase “faute de mieux” is a linguistic gem.  Its very existence reflects both the center and circumference of a distinctively French attitude.  “Faute de mieux” translates literally as “for lack of something better” — and only the French would have a figure of speech of such dismissiveness and nonchalance, n’est-ce pas?  Us optimistic Americans just use the neutral “instead.”

But, today’s post is in fact aptly titled “faute de mieux” because I couldn’t quite corral my diversity of covets into a cohesive post.  That, and I thought the phrase sounded cooler than “Instead.”  So sometimes the French have it right — at least where aesthetics are concerned.

Alright, that was a lot of pedantry for a Friday morning, so let’s cut to the chase here.  Things to drool over:

1.  IllBeCa by Joy Gryson Church Street Envelope ($98).

UM, what.  Is this not the chicest thing since sliced brioche?  (????  Don’t know what that means.)  And how is it only $98?  I literally rubbed my eyes to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.  Did they drop off the first digit there?  So run, don’t walk, to snap up your own.  The shape and colors are of-the-moment in an I’m-a-fashion-editor kind of way.

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.34.09 PM Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.34.16 PM Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.34.22 PM

2.  Horn Tumblers ($75 for 2).

I’m a little late to the game here, but just started watching HBO’s GAME OF THRONES.  (Nerd, cough.)  And.  Obsessed.  Tell me I’m not alone here?  Kind of thinking I need some horn steins to guzzle mead out of while watching the rest of season 2.  Anyone else?

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.38.16 PM3.  Letter Bracelet ($185).

Shifting gears to something a little less embarrassing, I’m smitten with these lettered gold bracelets, part of a designer collab between Bauble Bar and Maya Brenner.  (Maya is better known for her state necklaces — if you have some state pride to brandish, check this series out!)  I kind of want one for both my first initial and Mr. Magpie’s.

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.40.37 PM Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.40.44 PMIf $185 is a little steep for this sort of accessory, check out these lettered necklaces from Gorjana ($50/pop).

4.  Script Blouse ($103).

And while we’re on the topic of the alphabet (a loose connection, at best), how funky-cool is this script-print blouse from Karl, on RIDIC sale for 70% off from Net-A-Porter?!

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.48.58 PM

Screen Shot 2012-12-13 at 7.49.08 PM

I can’t make out what it says on the shirt, but I hope it’s something snarky like “faute de mieux.”  (Ha.  It all comes full circle.)

5.  Two-Tone Clutch ($39).

I don’t know if you’re feeling clutched out after what feels like 34 consecutive seasons of non-stop clutching (?), but if you have room in your heart for these little guys ($39 but Gap has been running discounts for the past 2 weeks), the colors are really spot-on.

6.  Non-Seasonal Lust Item: Suno’s High Neck Patterned Dress ($595)

I know this is wretchedly inappropriate given that I’m excitedly awaiting for Christmas, but I saw this stunning dress from hot line SUNO NY (originally made famous by Kate Bosworth’s hippie chic look at Coachella a few years back, where she made quite a splash in a tie-dyed Suno number) and stopped dead in my tracks.  I need this.  End of story.

sunoThe color, the print, the neckline.  It’s just delicious perfection.  Sort of like a grown-up Lilly Pulitzer.

7.  Kaleidoscopic Print Sloafers ($155)

You may be exhausted with this trend as well (I’m sorta winding down on them myself), but the print on these puppies was too good not to showcase.  Love ‘em.  Imagine with #allblackeverything.

Screen Shot 2012-12-14 at 8.03.09 AMcp

8.  Foo Dogs ($58 for set)

Shifting gears, I love these fun little ceramic foo dogs.  I would use them as book-ends or maybe would separate them and have them live in different parts of my house — as decor on a bookshelf, on a mantel, on a coffee table atop a stack of books, proudly displaying a couple of my necklaces in my dressing room, etc.  Great colors, don’t you think?  I’m torn between the deep blue and the pristine white.

Tell me these aren’t the snuggliest, cheeriest little thangs you ever laid eyes on.  I snagged the melon-and-cream striped one earlier this season, and am regretting it since they’re now so cheap — $24 plus 30% off.  Perfect for pairing with cozy pajama bottoms on Christmas day, or beneath a puffer vest with some boyfriend jeans and funky flats.

10.  Painted Birdcages ($182)

I supposed I’m drawing some serious influence from Asian accent pieces, because in addition to the foo dogs above, I’m also swooning over these brightly colored pagoda birdcages.  Love how fanciful they are.  I can see them in a little girl’s room, as a big accent piece in the corner of the room.

Do you follow me on  Pinterest?  If you do, you’ll have noticed a slight grush (girl + crush) on Russian fashion plate Miroslava Duma.  She’s wildly eclectic and, despite her diminutive size, pulls off patterns and haute shapes with ease.  Check out her avant garde fashion blog, Buro 24/7 — LOTS of eye candy.

Also, I love her hair.  Kind of makes me want a slick, even-length bob.  But I think you need her bananas bone structure to pull it off with style.  Anyway, I’ve been trying to figure out what makes Miro tick in the fashion sense, but it’s a challenge — the sampling of looks above demonstrates her versatility: from ladylike cape and croc purse to playful floral jumper, and you should see some of her even wilder creations.  But I am going to put together some Mira-esque looks for my own personal enjoyment…first, we gotta begin with something bold, textured, and interestingly shaped: a pink cocoon coat (Gianluca Capannolo, $1,489) will do the trick.  She’d wear it with a huge necklace (Shourouk, $1,100 — and PSST: I received a special coupon code from the kind folks at Charm + Chain for 25% off EVERYTHING now through December 14th with code: CC25OFF!  Get shopping!):

Finish with some colorblocked heels (Brian Atwood, $915)

Another look very much up her alley?  This voluminous sweater-top-dress ($36) with an oversized medallion necklace ($635), a pair of lighter-washed, slightly-distressed jeans, and some funky heels (on SUPER sale for $88):

Finish with the McQueen Demanta clutch ($850) — you need something big and oversized to finish the look.

I can also very much see her in this Proenza Schouler number (loving the quilted collar detail — $1,150), with a statement necklace ($367) worn under the collar ($black tights and some ankle-breaking booties (Alaia, $1,878):

I can also envision her in this darling Marni dress ($1,000) with this BANANAS leopard necklace (I just MUST own it — $138):

A slam dunk with these platformed velvet and satin tootsies (Tory Burch, $425) with this limited edition DVF “sun circle clutch” (a piece of art — $995):

In closing, for our gifting guru item of the day…

…and though it’s a tad above our $50 goal, how Miroslava Duma is this Shourouk-esque necklace ($78)?!  Imagine it tucked neatly under the collar of a printed dress.  Ba.na.nas.

A Piece of (Art-)Work

In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Gifts!, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes on November 14, 2012 at 11:17 am

When I think back on some of my very favorite memories, so many of them have taken place in the presence of great art: in the Guggenheim Museum in Venice while studying abroad and feeling very independent for the first time in my life (I had chosen to split off from my traveling buddy to explore Venice on my own, and spent a good half-day ogling over the visual splendor housed in that villa on the channel); in Paris at Musee Marmottan with my parents, soaking up every last minute of their indulgent kindness before heading off to college for the first time; at the Frick in New York with my baby sister just after she’d moved up there and we were feeling very lucky to have a day of sisterhood; at the Phillips in D.C., where I interned for a summer and managed to smuggle some friends into a boozy after-hours event and wound up having the time of my life.  Today, I’m hoping to pay some modest homage to this trend by featuring some of the artful pieces I’ve seen cropping up all over the place — hand-painted items; brush-stroke prints; unique, artisanal patterns.

Let’s begin high-end, with this stunning horse pattern shirt ($836), which would look bananas with these expensive-looking drops ($100!), a wool mini (on sale for $125), and black tights:

Finish with these city slicker cap-toed booties (Alice and Olivia, $405) and a pebbled leather clutch (Clare Vivier, $157):

Also a huge fan of this funky artful printed blouse ($98), paired with this ginormous deco pendant (obsessed with this affordable find — Rachel Roy, $65).  This look would be fab with a simple pair of skinnies, but why not juju things up with some red Minnies ($70) and some simple black flats ($80)?

I’d finish with this textured “bubble” clutch (Phillip Lim, $325):

For something even bolder, check out this painted leather dress ($250), which reminds me, for some reason, of part of a Frida Kahlo painting.  Totally something fashion-plate Miroslava Duma would wear.  Finish with an emerald-esque necklace ($575 — OR check out J. Crew’s jewelry collection, which features lots of this color, as with this stunning necklace):

You’ll need to pair this look with the highest — and thus most haute couture — heels you can muster, like these Charlotte Olympias, which defy all logic ($895) and a artful clutch ($650):

As an aside, this snakeskin Balenciaga bag ($3,350) is mesmerizing and Jackson Pollack-esque…a true work of art!

Shifting gears/color-palettes, love the idea of an artfully-printed blouse (DVF, on super sale for $118) with this ah-mazing piece of horn jewelery ($385), skinnies, and almond snakeskin flats ($250):

Perfect for a day of shopping/art-browsing!  Could go well with this stunning clutch (love the clasp! — $850) in blue if you’re transitioning to evening-wear, but the black is so versatile…

Also liking the idea of pairing this brush-stroke print scarf ($185) with a pleated dress ($143)

Finish with these cheeky heels ($945)

This funky clutch (Morgan Parish, $220) might be the perfect cap to the look, if you’re not too afraid of matchy-matchy…otherwise, go with a simple black clutch.

Speaking of Morgan Parish, one of her other goodies makes the “Gifting Guru” corner today…

How darling are these funky little key-rings ($30)?!  A perfect stocking stuffer or gift for a co-worker, cousin, etc:

OK, you didn’t think you’d get a fall lust list from the Magpie without some bank-breaking goodies, did you?  (Sorry, Lucy P.)  So first — I want this detachable fur collar coat ($450).

I’d layer it over everything, but fur a chic work look?  I’d pair it with a tone-on-tone gray trouser look courtesy of these Theory pants ($275) and a cashmere Tippi sweater ($188), and this lovely deco-style necklace ($165):

I like it finished with a pair of red snakeskin Manolos ($865)

And I’d finish with this perfect-for-fall pumpkin tote from Pour La Victoire ($475):

For a little arm candy, I’m loving these wrap watches from Jennifer Miller ($240):

Now, if we’re really ballin’, we’d reach for this very Hitchock Heroine wool dress from Gucci ($1,995), with these charming jaguar-accented earrings from Alexis Bittar ($295):

Finish with those ultra-covetable Rockstud pumps from Valentino ($1,145):

Finish with one of these Meli-Melo totes (dying over these — Olivia P. owns them in a bunch of colors, and I can’t pick which one I like best! — ~$700):

Beautiful…!  Speaking of leather, I’m loving the idea of a rich leather skirt for fall.  I’d like this Rebecca Taylor style (on sale! — $247) with a white bow-neck blouse (I love this Rachel Zoe style — $295):

I’d finish with some booties (LOVE these Rebecca Taylors – $365):

Finish with this ah-mazing bag from Jerome Dreyfuss (on sale for $476):

Swoon.  And, yes, I’ll admit I took some cues from Olivia P. with this style:

I decided that I would wear something other than a dress or skinny jeans out for a night on the town.  I wore a pair of wool-blend ankle-cropped tomato red pantalones.  And I have to say — I’ve never drawn more looks from the gentlemen.  Mr. Magpie can attest to this; at one point, he said, “I feel like you’re getting checked out…a lot.”  This is slightly perplexing to me, as I personally felt that the ladies would appreciate the look more (and let’s be honest, we all dress for women anyway), and I wondered whether Mr. M would think I was entering “old woman territory.”  Apparently not.  Let me recreate the look for you: a flashy bronze necklace ($198); camel sweater ($79); red pants ($79 — though I got mine from Gap of all places and they fit me like a velvet glove); my favorite camel suede Declic Louboutins (mine are closed toe and a hair taller than the ones shown below, but you can get a similiar look for less here):

I finished it off with my Chanel and a patterned scarf heavily featuring camel ($205):

This has really led me to rethink life.  And by life, I mean the inappropriate emphasis on denim in my evening-hour wardrobe.  It’s time to switch thangs up. Micaela L., I get where you were going with coveting a pair of leather pantalons.  I ordered and returned this pair of coated J. Brand’s last year — leather with training wheels, essentially — but I couldn’t find the appropriate occasion to wear them, even though I thought they would look so.chic. with a chunky knit and some killa heels…anyway, I’m mega into non-denim bottoms this season, especially in the cropped style.  I need. this pair of hunter green Minnies ($89), which I’d wear with a big necklace ($188),  patterned ($298) or nude blouse, cap-toed heels (aren’t these a bargain?!? — $80 — love.)

I’d finish with a classic leather bag, like this stunning D&G score ($2,345):

If these colors scare you, never fear.  Black is not far away.  Try a pair of black cropped trous (Acne, $320) with a patterned bow-front blouse (Marc Jacobs, $875), some glitzy enorma-studs ($35), and some pointed-toe heels ($168):

If you’re into the bow blouse like I am this season, check out these less expensive styles here, here, and here.  The latter one I’m particularly ecstatic about.  With jeans?!  C’mon.  I’d wear this with the Philip Lim Pashli ($895) in the pebbled leather.  Swoon.

This look needs to be worn with a swipe of hot pink lipstick (YSL’s Soft Fuchsia is lovely — $32):

Or, how about this navy-printed blouse from Equipment ($230) with a bold beaded necklace ($36)), some DVF trousers ($435), and THE PERFECT FALL HEEL (O.M.G. — Manolo Blahnik $645 — love how the Carrie Bradshaw classic has come sling-shotting back into vogue):

I’d modestly mix prints by adding this dove shawl ($195), which goes perfectly with the palette and adds a little warmth and contrast, and would round the outfit out with this Proenza Schouler cross-body ($1,950):

Side note — discoveries of the weekend: this snow leopard fur scarf from Rachel Zoe ($190) which I MUST.OWN within the next 24 hours, and this stealerooskidoodledoo of a dress ($25), which I almost bought in multiple colors, but that just seemed weird.  No one wants to be seen wearing the same dress in two colors.  I was torn between the gray/orange and red/navy, but ended up opting for the gray/orange because it was more unusual and it goes with a pair of ridonculous Anya Hindmarch platforms I own (patent gray, orange, and white…trust me, they’re beautiful).

HAPPY MONDAY!

OH.  And I’ve been DYING over all of the amazing responses I’ve received to my “Getting to Know You” post from last week!  Please share your thoughts!  I’ll pick a “winner” tomorrow!

Internal Monologue

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Gifts!, Gym Gear, Home Decor on August 24, 2012 at 11:18 am

Let me tell you a lil story about the gamut of human emotions, and how I displayed each and every one of them over the course of 45 minutes in an innocuous sounding exercise class — Bardio at Barre Bee Fit.  Now.  I am not a jock.  I am petite and worthless at sports.  But I exercise regularly, have been known to get just a wee bit competitive, and can be very disciplined when it comes to breaking a sweat.  I’ve tried lots of trendy fitness classes (except for zumba — no m’am can I do that — and I’ll explain why later) and have even enrolled a few times in boot camps.  However, nothing prepared me for bardio.  Let me explain.  I showed up decked out in my usual gym duds: neon sports bra ($15), tee ($22), and yoga pants (I don’t own the LuluLemon Groove Pants, but apparently everyone else and their mom does…must own whenever I adjust to the idea of dropping over $100 on yoga pants), and Nike Free Runs ($100):

My essentials were dutifully stowed away in the locker.  (The cool clear pouch is from One Truffle — available in a variety of colors for only $38 — and the hair tie is from Mane Message.)  My water bottle ($14, Water Bobble) was filled.

Then, this happened:

Minute 1: Pleased with self.  YES.  I made it to the class, I’m feeling good, and these other chickadees don’t look super intimidating.

Minute 3: Happy.  Rihanna is blasting, and I’m doing jumping jacks.  How bad can this be?

Minute 5: Competitive.  Why is that other chick doing everything twice as fast as I am?  That’ll do, that’ll do.  Just wait and see what this little magpie is capable of.

Minutes 6-8: Feverishly active.  {Brain is dead while my beady eyes keep their eyes on the prize.}

Minute 9: Smug.  Ha.  I knew I could be faster and better than she was.

Minute 10: Ill.  Uh-oh.  I probably shouldn’t have eaten those gummy bears an hour before class.  I feel barfy.

Minute 11: Confused.  What the beep?  Why does the clock say 11 minutes have gone by, when I’ve clearly been doing this for an hour and a half?

Minute 12: Angry.  No, really.  It’s only been 12 minutes?

Minute 14: Amped.  OK, I’ve been distracted by the promise that we are ending these quad exercises and will now be doing things on a mat.  And I really am kicking ass — that girl over there took 3 breaks during the last set, and I’m still dominating.

Minute 16: Regretful.  The mat is NOT better than the quad exercises.  One word: plank.  Well, three words: poopoo caca plank.

Minute 18: Ill again.  Whoever invented the mountain climber move should be forced to wear dhoti pants for the rest of her life.

Minute 20: Hopeful.  The amazing girl wearing Lululemon who was killing it during the first 10 minutes seems to be struggling as much as I am.  Phew.

Minute 22: Furious.  Where does this instructor get her energy?

Minutes 23-24: In serious pain.  Who knew leap frogs were so deadly?

Minute 25: Laughing maniacally.  Caught sight of myself in the mirror and thought someone was enduring an epileptic seizure.  But no, it was myself, trying to be coordinated.

Minute 26: Focused.  Trying really, really hard to ape the slick moves of the instructor.

Minute 27: More laughing.  {Failed miserably.}

Minute 31: Frustrated.  Hey, no one said you had to be a member of Riverdance to join this class.  I don’t see why I should be expected to move my legs back and forth one way while moving my arms in circles another way.

Minute 33: Enthusiastic.  There MUST be only 2 more minutes left, because there MUST be a ten-minute slow-down/stretch period.

Minute 36: Dejected.  Nope, guess we’ll be doing a full 40 minutes of this torture.

Minute 37: Writhing in pain.  {Too focused on burning thighs to notice anything else.}

Minute 39: Flailing.  I can’t control my muscles anymore; I guess this vague excuse for arm movements will do.

Minute 40: Exhausted.  Enya comes on, as if the voice of an angel.  Winding down.

Minute 43: Proud.  I did it.  I did something.  I did a real thing for 45 minutes.

Minute 45: Ecstatic.  I probably burned 5000 calories in the last 45 minutes.

9 hours later: Wincing in pain.

So — tell me.  Has anyone else experienced this in their workout regimens?!  I feel like I need Bengay to make it through the day.  Otherwise, I’m waddling around like a penguin, trying to avoid bending my legs.  And don’t even talk to me about putting a shirt on.  It hurts to lift my arms.

And at the same time, it’s amazing.  I feel so energized and accomplished.  To ride this wave of excitement, let me share with you my top picks for purchases right now (random and disorganized, as per usual):

First, this killer tribal-inspired necklace ($88).  I love love love love love love its chunkiness.  And the price is reasonable.

I for some reason want to wear it with this cheetah print bikini.  I know that bathing season is quickly coming to a close, but it’s on sale ($135)…and it’s Mara Hoffmann…and as evidenced by yesterday’s post, I am into animal right now.

I’d wear it with these simple brown Tory Burch flips ($115) to lengthen the leg and fully show off the results of Bardio, and would carry my essentials in this simple, sporty tote from Clare Vivier ($160).

The cheetah print reminds me that I’m seriously digging some of the stationery over at By Kollection, including the leopard print below ($25 for 20):

But what I really want from them is a set of their darling, customizable little note cards ($15 for 50)!  Loveee the poodle outline in particular, but you can pick from dozens of icons.

Love writing in style.  Speaking of, I keep my days organized by jotting down must-dos on my Jonathan Adler “Crack the Whip” pad ($8):

Oh, Jonathan.  You’re such a wit.  PS I also want one of these big MacBeth Collection “to do” note pads ($28), but I think Mr. Magpie will punch through a wall if he sees one more girly desktop accessory cluttering our shared desk space.  All right, that’s all she wrote this Friday!  Have a fab weekend!

Come and Go

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Glitter, Jewelry, Nautical, Shoes on August 21, 2012 at 9:41 am

I know that neon will eventually lose its effervescence on the fashion scene — it’s the textbook flash-in-the-pan trend, and it’s already dwindling.  (Don’t fret — your mini magpies will one day l.o.v.e. your neon Cambridge Satchel when it comes back into vogue in another decade or two.)  I already see it being phased out in favor of richer, more royal hues for fall.  And yet.  There are still some pieces that flag my attention and make me sit up straight, happy that we’ve been enjoying this warm embrace of color.  I, for one, would still happily sport this citrine-and-nude concoction from Mason by Michelle ($530) –

It’d look pret-ty fantastic with a glitzy necklace ($138) –

– and some serious shoes: behold the holy grail, ladies.  5.5″ inches of sparkly Charlotte Olympia perfection ($975).  Swoon.

Alternately, how fun is this affordable glam slam of a necklace ($58!)?!  I like it with a minimalist white blouse ($188), white skinnies (not for long!  Labor Day is just around the bend…), and some patent sandals ($98):

Perfection with this tasseled clutch from Blair Ritchey ($85), which would easily make the transition to your fall wardrobe:

Other affordable neon necklace options?  One of these collar necklaces from T+J Designs ($42 apiece) –

Alternately, check out the goodies at Elm Elm or Love Obsessed on Etsy — both shops are brimming with bold baubles that you’ll flip over.  Or, this rip-off of the House of Harlow station necklace, available for only $39 (boo ya):

Or, go nautical/preppy with the neon look by sporting this rugby stripe tunic ($198) from Sail to Sable over a white bikini ($215) –

– and of course a beachy tote (LOVE Dermond Peterson’s designs!!! –must buy all of his prints!!! — $115) and some gold sandals ($44):

For in-home decorating, go big with this lovely armchair from Stella Dallas (oh, how I love faux bamboo…$750):

To die accented with one of these fun little leopard lumbars ($165):

Or, accent a side table with one of these neon-hued foo dog lamps ($535 for pair):

Amazing, eh?!  Finally, keep the look relatively low-key by reserving the neons for small pops in the kitchen.  Consider these wooden spoons from Nicole Porter Design ($25 for set of 6), or these painted wooden pinch bowls from Wind and Willow Home ($21 for set of 2):

Finally, this set of salad servers ($33).  Too good.  (Or pick from one of the other shades below.)

Anyone else still on board with this, or am I the last woman standing?!  P.S. My apologies for yesterday’s truly A.D.D post.  I was really a little scattered yesterday…

Clearing Things Up

In Accessories, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Gifts!, Home Decor, Ikat, White on August 13, 2012 at 12:46 pm

Lucite.  As you may have gathered from my post last Friday, I’m sorta smitten with it.  (I think it’s a requirement of the consummate bloggerina — must own a lucite chair, write on a Macbook, and prominently display well-styled trays in all rooms of the house.)

Lucite, lucite, and more lucite.   Love, love, love.  Items currently living on my lucite lust list (how’s that for alliteration?)?  This pair of vintage lamps (homigod — imagine one at either end of a pristine white desk, bureau, or dresser) from Lobel Modern (no price listed…aka, terrifying):

Or, juge up your surfaces with a well-decorated tray ($29 for high-gloss white; $39 for acrylic):

Perhaps a colorful bowl or two displaying trinkets / candies ($48 for set of 4):

Or maybe a monogrammed plate ($38) with some baubles on top?

I’ve also been cooing over a pair of Staffordshire dog statuettes, and think one of these would make an excellent addition to any well-styled tableau ($160 for pair):

These trays would of course look equally fabulous atop a gold bar cart ($295), especially when arranged around one or several of these glass cloches ($50 and up):

Or, imagine this x-based side table ($250) next to your bed with a fresh bouquet of flowers and a happy-hued lamp ($166):

What a happy treat in the a.m.!  I have to add that my dream would be to further accent this room with this ridiculously delish daybed ($1,800).  I know that Mr. Magpie is wincing uncomfortably at the thought of this puppy living in our house, but…a girl can dream.  And I’d further girlify with this kiss print by the talented Sara Singh ($200):

No but really?!  Is it real?!  I love.  Other add-ons to this dream room?  A lucite trash bin ($19), naturally.

And a trio of acrylic/lucite desk accessories — a box full of mini quip cards ($28 for set of 100), a tape dispenser ($12), and a stapler ($18).

Of course, the lucite trend needn’t be just for home.  Consider a crossover trend in your wardrobe.  I love, for example, this Vanessa Mooney necklace ($100), especially layered with neon or sparkley baubles:

To my mind, the necklace above goes hand in hand with these edgy Jeffrey Campbell sloafers ($170), which are all the rage this season:

Alternately, any of the lovely baubles below…perhaps a long crystal pendant from Dara Ettinger ($253), a sparkly bangle or two from Alexis Bittar (did you know Alexis is a man?! — $255), or a casual watch ($60)?

…or maybe a pair of acetate sunnies by The Row ($445)?  If you can’t fathom dropping nearly $500 on a pair of clear shades, get the look for far, far less with this $32 TopShop pair.

Finally, one of my favorite bloglets, A Piece of Toast, ran an interesting post on the blogger-chic trend of clear clutches and recommended this affordable Minusey style ($78) for those of you wishing to get the look for less.

I like the idea…but would much prefer the good ol Phillip Lim Pashli ($650) in the clear fabrication.  TO DIE.  I know I’ve featured the Pashli in every possible size, color, and formulation over the past week or so…but it’s really that good.  I must own one.

Any must-haves from this post?!  Tell me what’s tickling your fancy…and have a great week, dolls!

Some Tings

In Accessories, Brights!, Home Decor, Magpie Nest, Neutrals, White on August 10, 2012 at 12:36 pm

When my girlfriends and I visited the Bahamas for Spring Break in college (errr what?  Spring Break, you say?  Now that I have a Costco membership, I’m too old to understand such jargon), we came across a ginormous PSA poster promoting safe sex that read: “Protect Ya Tings, Mon.”  Of course, this meant for the next 2-3 years, we would sporadically tell one another to “protect ya tings.”  This thought came to me in a flash the way useless tidbits do yesterday while brushing my teeth and it’s been floating in the ether since.  So.  Here are some TINGS to brighten ya Friday, mon.  (Miss you, girlies!)

First: a Jill Rosenwald vase ($76).  Ugh.  I’ve wanted one of her pieces for a long time (I love you long time, mon) but for some reason just can’t bring myself to take the plunge.  I wish the pieces were just a *leeeetle* bit cheaper to justify their purchase, because I feel as though you can find this sort of thing on the cheap from Anthro…but then again, they aren’t Jill Rosenwald.  Wahhh.

Yes, you, little guy!  I want you on my desk with some white peonies.  Thanks.  While we’re talking desktop, I’d also like the entire 6-book series of notecards from Russell + Haze ($22 each)l.  I think they look so feminine set up top on a desk:

Of course, use a Le Pen (get a set of 18 for $25 here) to craft any meaningful note:

I can daydream about myself working in a glamified girly office, sitting in a lucite desk chair ($410) behind my pristine white desk (the Jonathon Adler Channing…dream…$1,700), writing letters in style…

Beneath my tootsies?  Some sort of animal hide or fluffy sheepskin rug.  This Furbish find is to die ($700):

I can guarantee you Mr. Magpie is rolling his eyes right now because he says I only like to decorate in neutrals — white, beige, crystal, etc.  I must admit that this accusation holds true.  The proof is in the pudding: check out my Pinterest “Magpie Nest” board.  Oops-i-doodle.  I swear I like color, but white just looks so serene and classy…

Is there a problem here?!  Fiiine, I’ll add some color.  I will say I’ve been dreaming about stockpiling a few of these inexpensive and brightly colored bud vases from Design Darling ($16 each):

Oh, and maybe this fun phone plug-in ($29):

One other random (and colorful) item I’ve had my eye on lately?  These scented drawer liners from MacBeth Collection ($12/roll):

Genius, n’est-ce pas?!  OK, fronds — have a great weekend!  See you next week, and please forgive me if the next few weeks of posts are a little nest-centric.  We’re designing some of our new rooms here in Chi-town, so all I can think about is interior decorating at the moment.  We need to buy a new couch, a new bed, a new dresser, and a million other new things…soooo.  Get ready.

{Placecard from SugarPaper — buy it in paper form at $14/pack of ten.}

Life Savers

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Brights!, Fierce, Intimates, Pop of Red, Shoes on July 3, 2012 at 2:22 pm

I was just thinking the other day about all of the un-sung heroes of the fashion/self-styling world.  And I decided that today’s post should pay homage to those little miracle-workers that make my life that much better.

1.  Steamer

In a word — amazing.  My fashion designer sister owns the big dog industrial type that they use in stores, but I snagged this inexpensive, travel-ready mini-steamer ($29), which has been a boon on more occasions than I can count.  (Plus, its portability is genius — just throw it in your suitcase and forget your worries about showing up with wrinkled clothes.)

2.  Foot Petals

If you think about it, heels–especially of the ilk that I enjoy, i.e., as high as possible–are a peculiar innovation.  You’re essentially walking around on the balls of your feet, contorting your ankles at an unnatural angle, and thinking that you look hot while you do so.  All that said, if I had stronger stamina, I’d wear heels every day — they make me stand up straighter, they add a few inches to my diminutive height, and they make your legs look fantastic.  Foot petals ($14 for set of 2) are one trick that you should consider if you’ve not yet been introduced to their genius — pop them into your shoe (wedges below are on sale for $119!), where the ball of your foot lands, and it makes for a more cushioned, comfortable heel-wearing experience.

3.  Makeup Remover Wipes

Hello, how did I survive before these arrived on the scene?!  I use Almay oil-free wipes ($4.99) for my mascara/eye make up (don’t bother with the oil variation — who wants oil in her eyes?!) on a daily basis, and then keep a stash of Neutrogena face-cleansing wipes ($6.39) to clean my face whenever I’m too exhausted before bed and/or traveling and don’t want to pack my full facial cleanser bottle.  Below: Tory Burch cosmetic kit ($115) with my favorite mascara (Diorshow, $25)

P.S. Love this neon mini cosmetic case from TB as well — on sale for $38.

4.  Top Hats

These buddies ($30) will be your breast best friend.  (Ha, couldn’t help it.)  They keep things…discreet.  They also give you ultimate flexibility when wearing dresses with complicated straps/cut-outs or a low back.

 5.  Manicure Musts

When I’m in a bind and need to give myself a quick manicure, I rely on a few professional-grade tricks, including, most importantly, Seche Vite as a top coat ($7.99), the Essie nail corrector pen ($14 — I use this to touch up around the nail after I’m done), and — of course — great nail colors.  I love Essie!

P.S. Sorry for the radio silence…lots of BIG and EXCITING life changes going on…!  I’ll fill you in soon!

Fringe Benefits

In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Fringe, Jewelry, Neutrals, White on June 25, 2012 at 10:23 am

I mentioned last week that fringe is going to be seriously in this summer.  And I, for one, embrace the judicious use of fringe in the ol’ wardroberooski.  Consider an airy, wear-anywhere-and-with-anything white summer dress ($365) with a unique, tasseled pendant necklace by under-the-radar line Dezso ($100):

Pair with some super-fun tasseled sandals ($295) and this cheery hibiscus-red DVF bucket tote ($545):

Or, let this embellished mini dress (on sale for $328) by Antik Batik do all of the work (on sale for $328) with some green drops ($100):

Pair with nude patent sandals (this pair by Gucci is on sale for $247!):

And, one of those drool-worthy PS1 clutches from Proenza Schouler ($895 apiece — pick your color!):

Or, go rocker chic with a fringed leather Michael Kors mini (uh, woahhhhh!  hey there, tiger! — on sale for $243) with a collarless white blouse ($50) and this awesome statement piece by Beth Lauren ($96):

I’d pair with these chic ankle-wrap sandals (only $49!) and this oversized envelope clutch (on sale for $49):

I’d finish the look with one (or both) of these mixed metal rings from House of Harlow ($65 each) — I’m totally obsessed!  I’m going to order the one with the gold horn and the silver band, and STAT:

If the above looks are a little too fierce for you, go ladylike with fringe wearing this tweed mini (on sale for $150 from Tory Burch!) with a sleeveless white blouse ($220 — or get the look for less with this $98 Madewell style) and one of those amazing Noble House necklaces I featured on Friday ($130):

I’d finish with white flats ($195) with a clean white tote by Alexander Wang (on sale for $548):

Alternately, how about this boucle jacket ($495) with these precious white fringe earrings ($125), some crisp white jeans, and metallic K. Jacques sandals (on sale for $211):

I’d finish with a platinum leather bucket tote ($125):

Chic, fresh shape.  Very Jil Sander.  Me likey.  Another cool-gal addition to the wardrobe?  This J.W. Anderson fringed top (on super sale for $660 — hardly a bargain, but still…), which I’d wear with a long tassel necklace ($230) and blue skinnies:

I’d accent with some fresh-looking heels (love these denim-accented platforms from Tory Burch, on sale for $245) and a fun raffia clutch ($79):

In closing — if you’re not sold on any of the looks above and just want a lil taste — check out this fun red hot Zara clutch ($99) or these fringed sandals (on sale for $45):

And, finally, who could say no to the genius of a Dannijo necklace ($845)?!

Swoons!  Happy Monday, all!  xxx

This, That, and the Other Thing

In Accessories, Brights!, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes on June 22, 2012 at 10:09 am

It’s my 28th birthday this upcoming Tuesday.  (Hells yeah to my fellow Cancers out there.)  I’ve never had an issue with getting older {Mr. Magpie is two years older than I, and he’s paving the way}, but…somehow, 28 seems less than enchanting.  In fact, 28 may be the unsexiest age ever — you’re not a spring chicken, and you’re not an established lady.  You’re awkwardly dangling in no-woman’s-land, with one foot in a 5″ ankle-breaker tootsie and the other toeing towards a kitten heel (“they’re comfortable”).  Well, no.  That’s a bit of a dark and dismal portrait — I think I’ll be wearing 5-inchers til I’m 6 feet under.  But the underlying feeling is there.  Does 28 mean I need to start wearing twin-sets and laughing knowingly at inside jokes about Botox?

No.  Not for this little Magpie.  I’m going to keep on keeping, and I’ll put my best foot forward in that campaign by announcing that I just snapped up these RIDICULOUS neon-and-snakeskin booties (O.M.G., I die, I die — on sale for $247), and they are set to be delivered on my birthday.  HOORAY FOR ME.  I’m going to strut around in those on my birthday with the devil-may-care ‘tude of a 22-year-old.

I saw them on Catherine of The Life Styled over here {also below} and pretty much went insanely bananas and had to make them mine.  So I did.  Woo.

Other recent acquisitions?  A few inexpensive and fun statement pieces (with pops o’ neon) from new discovery Minusey:

I first saw the badboy above on Annabelle of Viva Luxury and pretty much had to have the entire set:

I’ve also been looking for inexpensive ways to upgrade/glamify my desk at work, and I really think that these lucite desk accessories ($20 for stapler and $15 for dispenser) would do the trick:

Especially when off-set by a gold chevron tray (the style below from Up in the Air Somewhere was all.over.the.blogosphere, but you can find something comparable from Tilly Maison — I dig this style in a particular for little trinkets!):

I might also buy this gold foil LOVE sign from Made By Girl ($35) to finish the glossy look:

Ooh — and how about a set of these darling quips + queries notecards from Russell + Hazel ($12 for 50! — what a steal!) to keep thoughts, notes, and more?

Meanwhile, little knick-knacks/paperclips/pens (or, in my case, bobby pins — I swear that I have a bajillion and I’m constantly using them, but whenever I need one, they scatter and hide) could live in this vintage-looking feather tray ($45) from Jayson Home, which is chock a block full of curiosities and little decor treats:

Maybe owning glam gold pins ($16 for 999) might help me keep them on hand more readily…I know I just introduced you to Minusey above, but if you’re still in the market for another fun costume jewelry addition, check out Noble House Designs for Bauble Bar.  Yes and yes.

Meanwhile, this dramatically shaped tote ($250) from Kayu would be the perfect companion to the latter of the above necklaces.  Slam.dunk.

I feel like I could really tote around all of my essentials in that roomy love boat of a bag.  I might keep organized with these cheeky leather accessories ($140 for key rings; $235 for pouchlette) from Anya Hindmarch:

– and would accent with a cool new pair of shades, like these pairs from Jack Wills ($98 each):

OK, was this post sufficiently scattered enough for you?!  I feel like I’ve bounced from item to item with reckless abandon.  Must be a sign of old age…

Inspired.

In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes on June 21, 2012 at 9:54 am

This stunning print ($28) by Leigh Viner absolutely took my breath away:

Love the composition of color — the intensity of the neon, the stark surprise of the black.  I’ve been daydreaming about this palette ever since.  Hence, I need this similarly hued top by Creative Commune ($198), and STAT.  I’d wear it with white shorts or jeans, some Oscar de la Renta black tassel earrings ($395), and some single-soled heels ($100):

I’d finish with this fun tiki bar clutch from Kate Spade ($348):

Or, I might wear this 3.1 Phillip Lim blouse (on sale for $175) with this statement necklace ($228), some black skinnies, and some black cap-toed canvas-and-patent flats ($138):

I’d finish with this fun clutchski ($360):

Or, how about this chic scalloped-edge top (on sale for $227) with some tangerine-colored shorts ($45) and a Holst + Lee statement necklace ($510 — although, have I shared with you my love for Adia Kibur?  I can’t be shelling out $500 for necklaces, and Adia Kibur gives me the chance to get lots of bold, fashion-forward style for a fraction of le prix):

I’d finish with some patent sandals by Maison Martin Margiela ($507 — but get the look for less here or go in between with a pair of K. Jacques) and this beyond adorable clutch by up-and-coming line Kayu ($155):

Also sweating this DVF dress (on sale for $212!)  — how big of a splash would you make sporting this bad boy?! — with some glam drops from Bounkit ($320):

I’d pair it with these simple black Zara heeled sandals ($49) –

– and this House of Harlow fringed clutch ($245).  Fringe is going to be HUGE this summer and fall.  (Check out some of the fringed metal jewelry from Jules Smith — loves.)

Loving the idea of black + brights/neons!  Happy Thursday!

Do You Want Some Cheese with That Whine?

In Accessories, Bombshell, Brights!, Champagne!, Magpie Nest, Pop of Red, Shoes on June 14, 2012 at 10:19 am

I try to stick to fashion on this little blogski, but today, I must digress and admit to the fact that I am the biggest baby ever.  Over the weekend, I had some sort of terrible allergic reaction to something that caused my right eye to itch and water uncontrollably for like a bajillion, trajillion hours and have been on all kinds of eye drops and ointments ever since.  I know it’s not a big deal and “this too shall pass” as my Magpie Mother pointed out while I was tearfully begging for her Dr. Mom opinion, but — I’ve just been having a big ol’ pity party for myself nonetheless and I need to snap out of it.  What better way than by planning an imaginary Whine + Cheese party?

First: setting.  I’d like to steal an idea I saw on Chevrons + Stripes by hosting my whine party in a glamorous pillowed teepee/tent from Fute Design

I’d wear a floaty caftan ($575 — and if you’re not into the ankle/maxi length, check out this $325 Cynthia Vincent style, which I’m BANANAS over…that citrine color!) with some glam drops ($430):

I’d finish with pure gold Zanotti sandals (on sale for $385 — but also available in pink here)

I’d serve wine in colored, stemless drinkware ($35 for set of 4) –

I’m weirdly obsessed with these neon corkscrews (around $100 each) by L’Aguiole, which would certainly make a lovely accent-piece (and come in handy):

Meanwhile, I’d serve treats on some dainty paper plates (who says paper needs to look cheap?! — $7.50 for 10):

We’d keep some vino / champers chillin in a sleek ice bucket ($175):

And you better believe there would be a nice spread of cheese and other treats ($24 for cheese slate board) –

I just discovered these tearable cotton napkin rolls — you buy a roll for $27 from MyDrap and can just tear them off as you need them!

All of my guests and I would sit surrounded by pillows ($115 each) and blankets ($170 each) until the wee hours of the night –

Of course, good tunes are de-rigueur — especially when issued from a hot pink iPod dock ($162):

I’m feeling better already…

The New Classics

In Accessories, Americana, Beach Wear, Beauty Products, Brights!, Jewelry, Magpie Must, Pop of Red, White on June 7, 2012 at 11:06 am

I have a hard time buying “basics.”  I’m the type of girl who’d much prefer to snag an impractical pair of hot pink pumps or a splashy new necklace than the perfect wear-with-anything black flats or trench.  That being said, I’m always thrilled with my decision when I actually own high-quality lather-rinse-repeat classics — the items that cycle through my wardrobe once or twice a week.  This post pays homage to those stand-bys for their service.

1.  The Cap Toe Flat

I’ve owned several pairs of cap-toed flats, and I absolutely wear them into.the.ground.  Currently in rotation?  The Michael Kors Otley flat in the camel and silver combo shown below (on sale in a darker color combo for $136 here)

They literally go with everything, and are oh-so-of-the-moment with the metallic cap.  Heartsies.

2. A White Crossbody

I’m smitten with everything Proenza Schouler has been doing lately, so I’m obviously swooning over the PS11 mini ($1,650), though this Rebecca Minkoff style would achieve the look for a fraction of the price ($195):

3.  Tortoise Shades.

This is the style that just keeps giving.  I love the Selima for J. Crew pair shown below (on sale for $88), though I own the Elizabeth + James “Lafayette” ($155):

So cool.  So classic.

4.  A Red Manicure

I’m a devotee of Essie’s colors, but these classic coral-reds from YSL (“Corail Colisee” and “Corail Divin” — $25) stopped me in my tracks.

5.  Gold Cuff

I’ve long died over the Hermes Collier de Chien bracelet shown below –

– but this $145 Tory Burch style is the clear “must” of the season.  I’ll finally get the look for much less!

 6.  Colored Denim

It’s here to stay.  I wear my reds, whites, and corals almost as frequently as I do my blacks and blues!  I’ve said this a bajillion and one times, but J. Brand is where its at for colored denim.  I lovelovelove it.

7.  Gauzy Scarf

I wear scarves pretty much a million times a week  (…?)  My daily uniform essentially consists of: skinny jeans/cigarette pants, a blouse or cotton tee, a blazer, a statement necklace, and a scarf.  At the moment, I’m coveting the Lem Lem styles below ($125 each) — so hot right now.

8.  Shirtdress

Whether you’re 18 or 80, a shirt-dress is flattering, appropriate in nearly any context, and pulled together.  This affordable TopShop style is #winning:

9.  Stripes!

As you can probably tell, I heart stripes.  I’ve got my eye on this Melissa Odabash striped bikini (on sale for $95), and — one can never have enough striped tees (like this J. Crew style — $45):

10.  The White Watch

I’m so into this look right now, I can’t even begin to explain.  Take your pick of Kate Spade’s “Cooper” ($195), the “Easy Reader” ($65), or this Timex Original ($60):

LOVEEEEEE.

Dippin Dots

In Accessories, Brights!, Jewelry, Polka Dot, Pop of Red, Shoes on June 6, 2012 at 8:48 am

Remember Dippin Dots?!  I hadn’t thought about “the ice cream of the future” until this past weekend, when I attended a Nationals game and spotted lots of precious little mini Magpies lined up for their Dippin Dots treats.  Such a clever, festive way to enjoy your ice cream, eh?!  I’m inspired.  Beat the heat in comparable fashion with this polka-dotted top ($68) and some white skinnies

Perfection with those Red Valentino bow-toed sandals (on sale for $206) I just snapped up and a gold clutchski ($138):

I like it with a tangle of gemmed bangles — this set of 13 from Etsy storefront Sweet Auburn Studio (all 13 for $79) caught my eye:

Alternately, let’s die over this precious pom-pommed/dotted shell from J. Crizz ($128), which would look fresh with a pair of white skinnies, a statement necklace by hot jewelry label Holst + Lee ($510 — although, PSST — want the look for less?!  Check out this $68 style!), and some nude/gold sandals by Love Moschino ($208):

I’d finish with this dotted Comme des Garcons clutch ($190 — this little pouchlette has been all over the street style blogs!) AND — I can’t resist, how sweet is this polka dot-lined scarf to seal the deal ($365)?!

Or, how about this polka dot tee by Marni (on sale for $158) with some white shorts ($45) and some enorma-studs ($60):

Finish with some Tory Burch t-straps in bright coral (on sale for $157) with a gilded woven tote by Anya Hindmarch ($1,220):

Shifting to a slightly different color palette, do you love this Prada-esque mixed-print dress by Corey Lynn Calter (on sale for $168) with a pair of Karen Walker shades ($220 — this is the brand that all the cool bloggerinas wear, like Krystal of This Time Tomorrow):

Lovely with some flat brown sandals (love the ankle strap! — on sale for $199):

and a lemon die-cut tote ($99):

I like it with woodsy accents, like these studs from ByBoe ($90) or this set of bangles (on sale for $24):

And, while in this color family, how sweet would this canvas lattice-work dress from Built By Wendy be ($147) with these knotted, dotted Loeffler Randall flats ($275) and this tortoise, chain-link necklace ($307 — or get the look for less with this $58 style from Bauble Bar):

I’d finish with a silver tote from Matta NY ($170) to echo the silver dots in the flats…and also because I just feel like silver is so fresh these days after years and years of gold, gold, gold:

And P.S. — I feel like Tory Burch always has lots of delightful silver-accented accessories, so check her season out as well, if you’re on my same page!

Big Things Poppin

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Intimates, Shoes, Sundresses, The Honeymoon Trousseau on June 4, 2012 at 11:33 am

Yes, the title of this post hails from a T.I. jam.  Is there a problem?  {Apologies to my Magpie Mother.}  I was trying to think of an appropriate heading for this post, which is all about BIG, BOLD COLOR (I know, I know, nothing too original about that — we’ve been seeing neons and brights for the past season and a half…hope you aren’t bored of it yet!), and all I could think was: “Big things poppin, and little thing stoppin…[something unintelligible]…being broke is not an option.”  But if I’m being honest, the inspo for this post can be attributed to Miroslava Duma, the uber-chic Russian fashionista who founded the haute fashion website Buro 24/7 {yes, it’s in Russian, but the eye candy transcends language} and has since earned the glamorously vague job title of “Fashion Consultant,” a career title I place on the same aspirational plane as that of “financier.”  (What does a financier do, exactly, on a day to day basis, besides live in extravagance?  How awesome would it be to flash a business card that reads: “I’m Jane Smith, Financier”?  So, too, for Duma’s “Fashion Consultant” calling card tag line.)  If you don’t know about Miroslava Duma, you should probably follow me on Pinterest, as I obsessively pin her to my “Mavens” section.  You can also check out her digs via this Coveteur feature, which explores her closet.  Or, just swoon over the snaps from the shoot below:

LOVE.  LOVE.  LOVE. the color, the motion, the boldness of that swoosh of neon.  In that vein, how to die is this neon skirt ($250) with a feather-weight tank ($19)

Throw on some bold baubles, like these one-of-a-kind earrings by Pure Essentia ($105) or this faux gem necklace (I own it and dig it! — $98):

{As an alternative, check out this $58 find of a necklace.  Heartsies!}  I’d probably tone down the outrageous coloration with some nude platform sandals (love this $80 pair!)

I’d finish with one of these neon-striped clutchskis ($155):

And — I’d love to finish with a wristful of these Yarbie fabric bangles ($48-$79 each, depending on width):

Other hint-o-neon picks?  This woven clutch ($155) with these perfectly-coordinated Pierre Hardy tootsies ($735):

I’m also big into these neon bralettes ($19 each) — the perfect way to put a little (private) pep in your step:

For more casual beach or poolside lounging, snap up some of these colorful beach towels from The Girl and the Water ($29 apiece)

Now, I’m not huge into playsuits/rompers, as I discussed fervently with one of my gal pals this past weekend, but for beaching around, I can see it working, especially in the form of this DVF style (on sale for $72), over this Mara Hoffman two-piece (on sale for $183 — and BTW, I’m obsessed with Mara Hoffman, full-stop):

I’d finish with a colorful jelly tote ($98) and some neon t-straps ($44 and up, depending on color):

Or, how about some neon shades ($15) with an embroidered caftan ($286)?

Finish with metallic bow-toe sandals ($15 — for other affordable but uniquely designed sandals, check out Boutique 9) and a colorful confetti tote ($143):

HELLO, SUMMER.  Glad to have you here!

Tangelo Honey

In Accessories, Brights!, Dream Wear, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, White on May 24, 2012 at 4:27 pm

While in Miami with Mr. Magpie last week (hard to believe that was just over a week ago…it already feels like vague and dreamy memory), we listened to the Otis Redding channel on Pandora pretty much nonstop whenever we were in our hotel room (or on its balcony, enjoying G+Ts).  We both have a soft spot for Mr. Redding — his “Ton of Joy” was our wedding song.  Even now, just hearing the opening bars makes my stomach do flip flops.  We had taken dance classes over a series of weeks leading up to the wedding and had learned a simplified version of the rumba for our dancing debut.  We didn’t exactly have a “routine” — we didn’t want it to look cheesy and rehearsed — but it felt appropriate to actually dance rather than awkwardly, asynchronously rock back and forth.  (I was not blessed with rhythm.  Mr. Magpie was — he’s a talented drummer — but that will only take you so far.  As they say, it takes two to tango.)  I have to say, though, that we ruled our dance.  So fun.  Now, if only we could remember how to do the entire thing…one of the many casualties of time, I suppose?

At any rate, one of the songs that came up on the Otis channel while in Miami was Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic,” which for some reason caught me completely off guard with its raw poignancy.  I love when the brass comes in loudly halfway through the song — the perfect counterpart to the growly, soulful timbre of Morrison’s voice.  Though the song is a throwback to my early college years (when a crush burned me a Van Morrison mix CD, and I listened to it over…and over…and over), it will now forever be associated with the cozy luxury of that Miami trip.  I’ve clearly been listening to Van Morrison nonstop since, and his music has been percolating everything I’ve done this week.  Hence, the title of this post — an adaptation of the classic “Tupelo Honey” song title.

And scene.  Longest wind-up ever.  On to the meat of the matter: the ORANGE/TANGERINE color I’m digging so much.  Consider, for example, this awesome striped scarf (NEED — $125), a crisp white blazer ($535), and dressed-down denim shorts ($59):

I’d finish with tasseled flat sandals ($298) and an oversized clutch ($307):

Also loving this striped dress ($375) for its POP of tangerine, especially paired with these clover drops ($48):

Cool with these platformed Charlotte Olympias ($970) and MEANT to go with this fun clutch ($46):

For Memorial Day pool festivities (YES!), how about this little spot of sunshine in the form of a cover up (I know, I’m over the moon with love for LemLem these days — $200):

Perfect with a little hat ($70) and an orange-tasseled bag ($84):

And — of course — an orange two-piece by the one and only Mara Hoffmann ($200)!

P.S.  I love the entire Mara Hoffmann collection.  Have I mentioned this before?!  LOVE the colors, styles, shapes.  TO DIE.  Imagine laying out on this zebra-hide-style towel by Maslin ($225) — stylin’, eh?

Love the idea of denim with orange, like this ridiculously overpriced denim shift (almost $2K?! WHAT.  But die over the shape and style…) with this fun tribal-inspired knot necklace ($168):

I’d finish with this cheery clutch (love this new line, Morgan Parish! — $160) and some color-blocked Reed Krakoff sandals ($795):

In closing — loving a denim shirt ($120) with a funky necklace (I own a version of this unique necklace and wear it all.the.time — $54), tangerine J. Brand cut-offs ($159):

I’d round it out with these aqua-and-brown leather flat sandals ($89):

And then maybe this simple striped and knotted SeaBags tote ($165):

Miami (Ad-)Vice

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Florals, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Pastels, White on May 17, 2012 at 10:55 am

I’m back from Miami, tanned and rested.  (Read: sunburned and lazy.)  Turnberry Isle was phenomenal — its staff was spectacularly friendly and indulgent; the food was delicious (helloooo, trio of duck-fat fries from Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak…uh, yes.); and our accommodations were fit for a queen (and her king).  While I was a wretched mess by hole 11 of the golf course {gr}, the ample time spent worshiping the sun, downing cocktails, and listening to the Steve Jobs’ biography on Mr. Magpie’s iPhone left me completely satisfied and woozy with happiness.  I also got to roll out some of my louder fashion pieces, which left me more than thrilled.

A flamingo-pink maxi skirt ($395, Intermix) with a simple white tank ($19.50, Madewell), an enormous necklace ($45, Swell Caroline), and some silver flats (Zanotti, $595, Intermix):

I’d finish with a white cross-body (mine is the “Boyfriend” style, also by Rebecca Minkoff but no longer available — $195, Shopbop) and one or more of these CC Skye screw bracelets ($92, Boutique to You):

Or, throw all of your essentials for the pool into this woven tote ($68, Juicy Couture):

For golf, I wore J. Crew shorts and a vintage white Lacoste polo, but I easily transitioned to day-time hanging by pairing the shorts ($45, J. Crew) with a denim button-down ($80, Madewell) and a tangly statement necklace (Assad Mounser, $430, Net-A-Porter):

And finished with wedges (OMG…these are from the Webster for Target collection — $39, Target)

Perfect with this little cross-body ($110, Madewell):

Evenings called for silky little numbers, like this Amanda Uprichard lovely (on sale for $98, RGBSF) with statement earrings ($250, Helga Wagner):

I like the idea of finishing with these loud espadrilles (Kate Spade, $205, Zappos) and this darling ombre clutch ($198, Anthropologie):

I wore quite a bit of hot pink (including this little number, in the short version), like this Naven number ($335, Singer22), paired with lively earrings (NOIR, $110, Endless):

I’d finish with this fun clutchski ($450, Kotur) and some nude heels (Miu Miu, $695, Net-A-Porter):

For more casual, post-pool dining, I opted for flowy maxis along the lines of this darling colorblocked style (loveee the colors! — $334, Matches), paired with throw-it-on-and-go statement jewelry like this lovely necklace ($149, Club Monaco):

Finish with gold sandals (Dolce Vita, $69, Zappos) and a roomy gold clutch ($138, J. Crew):

I also managed to score this Webster for Target ($39, Target) dress just before leaving on Saturday.  It’s the most perfect Floridian dress that there ever was…and you can’t beat that price!  I wore mine with chunky green earrings ($65, J. Crew):

Any ol pair of flat sandals and a straw clutch work!

And now — I was SO MOVED by all of your lovely comments and entries for my three-year bloggiversary giveaway!  I love you all for reading with such sensitivity and kindness.  Here’s to many more years of Magpie!  The winner of the giveaway is: Erica Garcia!  I’ll be in touch so I can get your Magpie Surprise over to you!  xxxx

Guest Who?

In Accessories, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Florals, Intimates, Romantic, Shoes, Sundresses on May 16, 2012 at 11:16 am

OK, apologies for a) my absence the past few days {I was in Miami with Mr. Magpie} and b) the dumbest title for a blog post ever.  Let’s move right along.  I’m running this in response to many, many requests for a “What to Wear to a Summer Wedding” post — and I can totally commis(erate).  We’re finding ourselves smack dab in the middle of wedding season, and it’s time to develop a strategy for what to where to what.  First, some house rules:

1.  Never wear white, cream, or ivory to a wedding.  Bad manners.

2.  As a general proposition, I avoid lace at weddings.  Sort of an extension of the rule #1 — just avoid anything that might lead people to think that you are “upstaging the bride.”  (Or trying to.  Everyone knows there’s no one as beautiful as a bride on her wedding day.)

3.  If the dress code is not clear to you, always opt for a cocktail dress.  This is almost universally appropriate, even for more formal events that you might think merit a floor-length style.  You’d be surprised at the range of events you can attend with a sweet little cocktail number on!  Anything from a backyard wedding to a formal evening affair at a city club.  And, if you ever have any questions about what a dress code means, consult the master.

4.  Weddings are happy events.  Avoid black.

OK, item 4 isn’t really a rule so much as a strong suggestion, and I know it goes against every grain of our being as women.  I feel as though the LBD is the panacea to the woman’s every fashion woe.  I get it.  It’s slimming, it goes with pretty much any pair of shoes, and it tends to be highly versatile.  But at a wedding — even a formal one — it’s good to let yourself live a little and step out in color to suit the joyous occasion.  Also — let’s be honest.  Who stands out in an LBD, unless you’re Claudia Schiffer or something?

With those rules in place, let me begin with my top picks for this season: first up, I love the way that the maxi trend has enabled us to reimagine the floor-length dress.  Within the context of this trend, you can pull it off without looking like you’re trying to crash a royal ball in Austria.  So, I would strongly advocate the Rebecca Taylor corset dress ($475, Rebecca Taylor — also available in a splashy watermelon color here) with some stunning earrings (I know I just featured these, but they are too good — $138, Suzanna Dai):

{BTW, if you like the idea of the maxi dress but aren’t willing to shell out 500 big ones, check out this slightly less expensive ($350) Miguelina style, which I’ve had my eye on for awhile or this $260 French Connection style in lovely petal pink.  TDF.}  If you’re into the Rebecca M. style above, it would be perfect with these fairy princess shoes (Valentino, $995, Net-A-Porter) and a pleated chiffon clutch ($130, Bloomingdale’s):

For another soft look, consider this darling floral print dress ($250, Coggles) with topaz-centric danglers (Bounkit, $550, Charm and Chain — OR get the look for less with this $120 pair from Bauble Bar!):

I envision it with taupe or gray heels – this simple PLV pair would do the trick, though these Louboutins are pretty much the golden ticket to paradise, especially with this bow clutch ($35, AWear):

This would most definitely POP with a fun coral lip (Nars gloss, $24, Bloomingdale’s; YSL lipstick, $34, Nordstrom):

In a similar vein — but with a bit more color — check out these darling Thread floral print numbers ($222, TheOutnet):

And, P.S. — for you brides out there, the white version of the above dress would make a stunning rehearsal dinner score.  In fact, the entire Thread line is worth scoping out for all things wedding-related, whether you’re a bride, a guest, or a member of the bridal party!  Check out this linen seersucker number for a more casual seaside wedding, for example.  Love.  The above dresses would look adorable with a pair of white, ivory, nude, or blush sandals/pumps/etc.  Personally, I think white/ivory sandals can be super tricky.  Most of them look tacky and prom-like.  You could either spring for something expensive and showy, like these Zanotti wonders (WOW. – $750, Net-A-Porter), or go the easy route with a pair of nude or blush heels:

Keep additional add-ons to a minimum.  That fancy shoulder does all of the high-stepping for you.  I might add only a pair of cluster pearl earrings ($99, Max and Chloe) and a statement bracelet ($400, Mariam Haskell):

P.S. — for more statement pearl jewelry, check out the line Juliet and Company.  Love their affordable collection!  Another line I love for wedding guest attire?  Zimmermann.  I scored the loveliest nude/gold maxi from them that I’ve worn to three weddings (three! and I am usually terrible about re-wearing things.) with big statement earrings and bow-toe heels.  This royal blue style ($345, Shopbop) caught my eye as a little something different.  Perfect with some dazzling sparkly statement earrings (Elizabeth Cole, $232, Beauty):

{Like the dress but want options?  Consider this comparable $128 style; this similar-looking floor length variation (on sale for $139!); or yet another maxi-length style in this same cobalt/galaxy blue for $276.}  And P.S. – if those statement earrings are too dramatic for ya, check out this $130 Ben Amun style instead.  More wearable.  I like the dress above with the Kate Spade “Charm” in silver ($325, Bergdorf’s):

Too pricey?  Check out this $140 style instead.  Love.  And I kinda think this funky lip clutch would be a cool addition ($390, Lulu Guinness):

Now, if I had my pick of any dress on the planet to wear to a wedding, I’d blow my bank account on this stunning Notte by Marchesa style (even on sale, it’s out of my league — $752, MyTheresa):

Holy Mackerel.  If that were in my closet, I’d wear it every day of the week and twice on Tuesday.  Heart palpitations.  I’d pair with a bold red lip and simple heels and call it a day.  ALSO.  Don’t forget to enter my giveaway for a SPECIAL MAGPIE TREAT!  Just leave a comment on this post (thanks for all of your beautiful words of support!), and a winner will be announced TOMORROW.

Siete de Mayo

In Accessories, Brights!, Ikat, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Sundresses on May 7, 2012 at 1:53 pm

I’m a little late to the Cinco de Mayo festivities.  Woops.  I was busy attending an absolutely spectacular wedding weekend for the loveliest couple ever, and it completely slipped my mind!  I’m a little shocked that I completely dropped the ball and neglected to celebrate in some way because nothing makes this little Magpie happier than margaritas and guacamole…and a little something embroidered for the occasion!  So, we’ll just re-set and celebrate Siete de Mayo today.  I mean, I loveeee this cheery caftan ($98, Calypso) paired with a turquoise necklace($75, David Aubrey) and some ankle-strap flats (Cheap Monday, $79, Shopbop):

I’d round it out with a neutral straw clutch (Michael Kors, $198, PiperLime) and some gold bangles ($30 for 3, J. Crew):

Or, how lovely is this simple shoulder-tied sunderss ($150, All Saints)?  I personally love it with this tangly turquoise layered necklace ($180, StyleTryst):

I’d finish with this charming Anya clutch ($630, Stylebop) and these woven golden sandals ($44, TopShop):

Or, for those label lusters out there (no judgement), check out these comparable YSL sandals ($745).  For a serious statement, consider this Mara Hoffmann column dress ($284, Bonadrag) with some eye-catching drops ($110, Beth Lauren):

I’d finish with some stacked wedges (DVF, $278, Shopbop — DIE over these puppies):

And yet another Anya clutch find — $900, Stylebop:

Or, for just a little pop, consider this punchy scarf ($165, Pink Mascara) or this tassel necklace ($30, Mango) or these floral-accented sandals (Bottega Veneta, $580, Bergdorf Goodman):

While considering the tomato red hue, I’m loving this printed skirt (Marc Jacobs, $285, Stylebop) with a collarless cream blouse ($39, Monki) and dagger necklace ($188, Nordstrom):

I’d finish with sky-high tootsies (Gucci, $895, Net-A-Porter) and an envelope clutch ($138, J. Crew):

Ooh la la.  I want to dance the night away in that look.  Same goes for these colorful sandals (Jimmy Choo, $1,495, MyTheresa), this darling straw clutch ($195, Calypso), and some layered bangles (Assad Mounser, $300, Net-A-Porter):

And, how about some of these colorful dangly earrings ($40 a pair, Ziguidi)?!  LOVE.

Done and done.  HAPPY MONDAY!  Also, check me out on KOOBA’S Facebook page, styling their UH-MAY-ZING Barkley bag.  LOVE ME SOME KOOBA!!!

Confetti

In Accessories, Brights!, Dream Wear, Glitter, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes, Tweed on May 3, 2012 at 11:30 am

The inspiration for this post is this bauble by R.J. Graziano ($198, Shop Kitson):

I mean.  YES.  Goes with these happy tootsies (Pierre Hardy, $830, TheCorner):

These would be equally stunning paired with these drop earrings ($185, Flutter) and a flowy, red-hot dress (Kourtney K. was seen in this dress…aka, I must own it — $188, Pinkyotto):

Or, swap out the Pierre Hardy pair and go full-on glam for a night out with these Prada hot trotters ($1,100, Bergdorf’s — swoon.) and the ultimate score: the Alexander McQueen knuckleduster clutch ($1,505, Matches — no extra bling needed):

Alternately, how to die is this riot of a jacket (Tory Burch, $525, Net-A-Porter) with a pair of cluster earrings (Erickson Beamon, $310, Charm and Chain), skinnies and some spiffy flats ($61, Yoox):

I’d finish with a simple yellow tote — can’t help but re-feature (and re-feature, and re-feature) this covetable Reed Krakoff style ($1,190, Net-A-Porter):

Or, how about a confetti tweed mini ($98, J. Crew)?  Pair with a simple white tee ($29, J. Crew) and this awesome coral-esque necklace ($78, BCBG):

I’d finish with cobalt flats ($98, Banana):

Hot tamale.  Perfect “cool girl” work outfit, no?  Other bits and bobs to consider?  A gem-crusted clutch ($665, Forzieri) or some dazzling drops (from top to bottom: Yosca, $125, Charm & Chain; Bounkit, $365, Charm & Chain;$58, Juicy Couture; $300, Tom Binns)!

Just delightful.  And I’ll conclude with one of my all-time favorite pairs of shoes, which are happily nestled in my closet: the Kate Spade Charm ($325, Endless):

Perfection with this corresponding clutch (Kara Ross, $650, Bergdorf’s) and this ridiculous necklace (Erickson Beamon, $643, Thomas Laine):

BAM.

Flower Power

In Accessories, Brights!, Florals, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Romantic, Shoes, Sundresses, White on May 2, 2012 at 9:33 am

I’ve already posted on the BIG BLOOMS trend this season, but it’s time to get down to business and make a move on the trend.  I’ve seen so.many chic peas rocking oversized florals and it’s about time I join the bandwagon.

{L-R: Chloe, J. Crew, and Jason Wu}

Now, I’ll be the first to say that the head-to-toe floral suit get-up is not for me.  I can already imagine looking back and shuddering in about a year’s time — it’s like the power suit of 2012.  Yuck.  BUT.  Little pieces here and there?  Yes, please.  First on my list?  This cheery little shift ($50, Monki) with a funky little necklace ($125, The Remedi):

Finish with unfussy black flats (Repetto, $265, Shop Zoe) and a structured cobalt tote ($59, ModCloth — or go for the gold with this $1,495 Reed Krakoff style…to die.):

Or, go super on-trend with these dahlia-print pantalons ($75, Oasis — ALSO available in dress form for $115), a white peplum top ($258, Shopbop), this fun necklace ($310, Charm & Chain), and white Carrie Bradshaw pumps ($195, Vince Camuto):

Dreamy with the Phillip Lim mini Pashli ($725, Barney’s):

Or, thoughts on a white blouse ($88, J. Crew) with these fun floral shorts (Jason Wu, $695, Bergdorf’s), and this on-trend Shourouk necklace ($475, TheCorner — or get the look for less with this unbelievable find from Ann Taylor of all places!  Must.have.)?

I’d pair it with the neon Cambridge Satchel, which I finally scored this past week ($155, Shopbop) and some simple, clean white flats ($32, TopShop):

For something a bit less in your face, how about this slightly hippy-dippy floral print top (Sunner, $211, Les Nouvelles), a bronzed pendant necklace from my new favorite jeweler, Beth Lauren ($48)), white skinnies, and Tory Burch t-straps ($250, Saks):

I’d finish with the Chloe Marcie in denim ($1,325, Net-A-Porter):

Coachello-chic, n’est-ce pas?  Or, imagine these Jason Wu shorts ($865, Kirna Zabete) with a white blouse ($200, Very Eickhoff) and that bib necklace I’ve been swooning over in the poppy red ($36, Bauble Bar):

I might finish with these punchy woven flats ($69, Zara) –

– and a practical tote (Anya Hindmarch, $1,395, MyTheresa):

Or, what about this happy little number (Juicy, $280, Net-A-Porter) with some fleur studs ($55, Kendra Scott):

Finish with this punchy red clutchski ($395, Barney’s) and some cheery red strappy sandals ($98, J. Crew):

And, finally, the coup de gras: this darling petaled clutch ($175, GlamourPuss).  Imagine it with a simple white dress and some sky-high red tootsies.  TO DIE.

Happy Wednesday!

Magpie Musts: Spring Edition

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Brights!, Magpie Must on April 30, 2012 at 2:13 pm

It’s been a long while since I ran one of these bad-boys, but it’s about time I revisited, if only to lend provisional structure to my “things I like today” posts.  So: here goes.  Looks, trends, products that are on my radar this spring.

I was just as leery of this trend as the next body-conscious fashionista when it first surfaced on the runways.  Who wants volume right at the hips?!  It seemed counter-intuitive, and almost as stupid as the whole pajama trend.  (EwGag.  And are you serious?!  I love you, Hanneli, but come on!  You look like a jailbird.) But then there were these visions:

(PSST.  Love the pink Jason Wu dress above?  You can snag it here for a casual $3K.  NBD.)  And then I started taking cues from street-savvy fashionistas…

UM, yeah.  Talk about a dramatic/cool silhouette.  Loves.  I’m going to invest (lightly) in the trend with this affordable eyelet topper ($59, PiperLime)…but this fun little romp of a dress caught my eye as well (Lilly, $198, Neiman’s).  I love that the peplum is on a small/manageable scale.

Alternately, how fresh are these tops from Marc by Marc Jacobs ($258, Shopbop)?!

Mr. Magpie and I enjoyed a lovely date night (pre-dinner champagne + dinner + movie) on Saturday, and it was super fun to get all dolled up for the occasion.  I decided to test-drive a look I’ve been seeing a lot lately — hot pink lips.

So, I debuted my new YSL Rouge Pur Couture lipstick in Fuchsia Innocent ($30, Barney’s), and — much to my surprise — Mr. Magpie loved it.  He usually doesn’t like a lot of loud makeup, so I was a little surprised/thrilled by this discovery.

Just take a look at the lovely, glamorous Olivia P. to understand where I’m coming from with this one:

Sigh.  And, um, I love you, Rebecca Minkoff.  You just keep getting better and better, don’t you?  Thanks for recently dipping into the sunglasses market, because I’m smitten with every style you’ve released, but most notably the Bedford ($230, Shopbop).

No, not real-life revenge.  I’m talking about the deliciously outlandish and dramatic ABC series, which I inconveniently (or conveniently, depending on how you look at time spent watching trashy tv) stumbled upon while traveling for work, and have found myself obsessively watching on my iPad, late at night when I should be sleeping.

My girlfriends and I get together almost once a week for a wine + sninner night.  (Sninner = snack dinner, aka the bane of Mr. Magpie’s existence.  He needs a full, well-rounded meal.)  One of the best recent discoveries was a delightful little pairing of a wedge of manchego with a smear of membrillo (quince paste) atop a cracker.  O.M.G.  So delish.  (P.S. — do you love the monogrammed cocktail napkin?  Get your own here for $10 a pop.)

Mr. Magpie and I are big time cocktail lovers, but I must admit to a flavor-of-the-month tasting personality when it comes to them.  I’m the type of person who finds, falls in love with, and then promptly exhausts and retires something — whether it be a new favorite song, a piece of jewelry, or a cocktail.  (I’m getting dangerously close to the “exhaust and retire” phase for Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend.”  So.delicious.)  Mr. Magpie mocks me relentlessly on this flaw of mine.  But then he totally enables it because he’s an incredibly talented and dedicated mixologist — he infuses his own liquors, has made his own soda, and cares about little things like finding the best tonic water out there to make the ultimate G+T (in case you’re wondering, it’s Fever Tree tonic).  Further, if you ever come by for cocktails chez Magpie, your drink will never go unadorned — Mr. Magpie loves a nice garnish.  At any rate, my latest cocktail favorite is what I’ve taken to calling the Mr. Magpie Muddle.  It’s basically a margarita but with the limes all muddled up at the bottom and only a touch of sweetener.  Super tart, super delicious…and super potent.  (Straws pictured below are available on the cheap here.)

My mouth is sort of watering right now…

I’m proud of my adventurousness with nail colors this year.  I finally deviated from my classic orangey-red standbys (Escapades and Geranium) and have tested out everything from lilac to, yes, the darker hues.  But my favorite out-of-the-box color is Essie’s Marshmallow ($8, Nordstrom).  It looks stark white in the bottle, but it comes out this lovely, very polished (hehe, pun intended) hue that lends a little glam elegance to any look.

How amazing are these bad boys from BaubleBar?!  $36.  Done and done.

Welcome, spring!  What are your musts for this season?!

Walking on Sunshine

In Accessories, Brights!, Jewelry, Olivia Palermo, Shoes on April 26, 2012 at 1:00 pm

It’s gray and rainy outside, so hopefully this post will bring a little sunshine to your day.  Convenient framework, in a sense, because yellow has been all.the.rage. as a hot color this season.

Yes, yes, yes.  I want it all.  Especially that denim shirt with the yellow chiffon skirt combo.  Genius.  Top picks?  This woven clutch (just the right amount of neon — $155, Bottica) and these slick flats ($69, Nine West):

And — how freaking phenomenal is this investment-worthy necklace (KJL, $3,750, Moda Operandi)?!  I mean, I die and go to heaven.

Arresting with a simple, dressed down look — taking a cue from above by pairing a denim button-down ($79, Madewell) with some crisp yellow shorts ($45, J. Crew):

I’d finish with some understated brown t-straps (on sale for $80, MustHaves) and a fun cross-body ($395, Rebecca Minkoff — and check out the whole Rebecca Minkoff collection for more fun bright yellow separates!)

Maybe throw in a cool-gal fedora (Noel Stewart, $395, Barney’s)?

How awesome would it be paired with this affordable denim tunic dress ($39, Joe Fresh — and PSST, if you’re a touch of a label snob — no judgement — check out the awesome denim pieces from Tory Burch) and a tortoise-link necklace ($175, Shopbop)?!

I’d finish with these awesome statement Choos ($875, Net-A-Porter):

Love it finished with a Chloe Marcie ($495, Ssense):

Or, how about this throw-on-any-time yellow number ($143, Pret-A-Beaute) with a simple lucite link necklace ($125, Endless)?!

I kind of love it finished with this ikat-print cross-body ($112, Dealuxe) and those laser-cut Chloe wedges I’ve featured a number of times…they just go with everything! ($595, Bloomingdales):

Or, how about this blouson-style colorblock top ($118, RGB)?  Crisp with a tangly statement necklace ($428, Nordstrom), white jeans and those dreamy Valentino Rockstud gladiators (yah, right — $845, Forward):

I’d finish with a simple, structured tote ($68, Romwe):

Also very much into this 3.1 Phillip Lim skirt ($420, TheCorner) which I’d style semi-Miami-Vice with a white blazer ($535, Rag + Bone):

Sort of Kourtney K, isn’t it?!  And let’s be honest, I sweat her.  Round it out with these woven wedges ($865, Mulberry) and this laser-cut clutch ($128, BCBG):

Or, if you’re into yellow that leans towards the neon side of things, consider this bold bangle ($68, Ann Taylor) –

and these fun wedges ($134, Heels):

In closing, let’s swoon over this delightful structured bag (Reed Krakoff, $1,190, Net-A-Porter)?

Candy Striper

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Jewelry, Nautical, Pop of Red, Shoes, Sundresses, The Honeymoon Trousseau, White on April 23, 2012 at 1:43 pm

This past weekend, I attended my 10-year high school reunion.  {That’s right, 10 years.  Let that sink in for a moment.  Terrifying.}  Now, I know that reunions can be a source of tremendous anxiety/social awkwardness/cattiness, and maybe I just attended the best high school ever and was graced with a particularly stellar group of classmates, but I had an awesome time AND found myself bowled over by how beautiful, accomplished, and well-dressed my classmates are.  Ahem, one of them is the Director of Economic Development in the Canary Islands.  Let’s pause and think about this.  Can you imagine not only living in the Canary Islands (she was deeply, richly, and oh-so-enviously tanned) but enjoying that kind of career success at the age of 27?!  Um, yeah.  I need to get my tuchus in gear.  Another classmate is the VP of Sales and Marketing at a start-up premium denim company, Lock Sicker — super cool product {only for Mr. Magpies at the moment}, and she spoke with such grace and intelligence about the brand and its identity that I was pretty much reaching for my credit card and Mr. Magpie’s measurements by the evening’s end.  Yet another classmate {and dear friend} is a local news anchor here in D.C., and I won’t be surprised if suddenly I flip on the TV and see her delivering the national news on CBS.  I could go on and on, but I realize this sort of braggery (new word?) gets old quickly, so I’ll just conclude by saying that I encourage you to attend your high school/college reunions (with open eyes/hearts!) and that I want to visit the Canary Islands now.  It would be the perfect venue to debut some vacation-ready striped separates, which seem to have been finding their way to the top of my lust list over the past few weeks.  For example, I’ve been drooling over these Danish-made striped blankets (around $100, Kira-CPH), which would be PERFECT for beach-side lounging:

Or, consider pairing a striped tee (Chinti and Parker, $125, Net-A-Porter — PSST, also available in dress form here for $160) with some punchy shorts ($45, J. Crew) and that Holst + Lee necklace ($535, Latitude) I’ve been droning on about:

This is the kind of look you sport with bare feet and loose, beachy hair.  Oh so fresh, oh so summery.   Love that deep, near-cobalt blue color — hence my obsession with these coordinating separates: the perfect beach bag (Stella McCartney, $448, Farfetch), a GLAM sloafer (imagine wearing these puppies with an all-white outfit or with simple jeans and a white tee for maximum effect — AND YES, it’s a kid’s size, but the size 5 runs large! — $40, Zara):

Alternately, this happy-stripe sweater (Trina Turk, $178, Nordstrom) pairs perfectly with a statement necklace ($345, Ben Amun), white skinnies, and some simple flips ($48, Shopbop):

Perfect with this croc-effect cross-body ($320, StyleTryst):

Or, test out this cheery striped skirt (Marc Jacobs, $285, Stylebop — or, get the look for much less with this $48 BB Dakota skirt) with a simple white top (I’m drawn to this Mandarin-style — $345, La Garconne) and some mah-jor bling ($98, Lydell NYC):

I’d die wearing the above with these punchy pumps (what a delicious color — Louboutin, $645, Net-A-Porter) and this classic Bottega Veneta woven clutcheroo ($497, Farfetch):

And by the way — if you, like me, can’t get enough of that juicy tangerine color, check out this TDF little blouse ($98, J. Crew), some crisp white shorts ($45, J. Crew), and a pair of bold earrings ($95, Max and Chloe):

I kind of like it with some serious statement heels (Carven, $720, Ssense):

Or, let LemLem do the work for you — slip into this breezy caftan ($225, Lem Lem):

Lovely with a hot pink bikini ($195, Net-A-Porter):

Don’t forget the GLAM sandals (K. Jacques, $240, Net-A-Porter)

Other top picks?  This comfy neon-trimmed striped tee ($142, Steven Alan) –

Pretty much perfect with white shorts and these bold tootsies ($195, Calypso) and this clutch (Rebecca Minkoff, $195, Nordstrom):

I’m a Barbie Girl

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Bombshell, Brights!, Jewelry, Pastels, Shoes on April 19, 2012 at 9:56 am

No but really.  I am a Barbie girl.  Did I ever tell you about the “Barbie room” my sisters and I had in our basement growing up?  Between the four of us, we had two Barbie houses (mine was…unbelievable.  I mean.  It was tall and pink with white window boxes and a front porch, and it was the most beautiful piece of real estate I’ll ever own), 3 Barbie cars (one of which was legitimately a pink R.V. that we thought was very classy.  How kitsch of Barbie.), and about 70 Barbies and Kens.  Playing “Barbs” (we were into abbrevs at a young age) on Saturday mornings was no amateur affair for my sisters and I.  It began with a Democratic “picking of the Barbs” event where we would pile all eligible Barbies (excluding, of course, the rejects with “popped off heads,” hair “trims” — aka, botched hair jobs courtesy of yours truly — and missing body parts) in the center of the room and “with our eyes closed” take turns picking our Barbie family members.  In retrospect, this was a rather impressively egalitarian  and progressive approach to drafting our families, though I assure you that “nepotism” by virtue of feigning eye closure and/or groping around for the right Barbie build was an unfortunately routine practice.  (I’m not pointing fingers, but my next youngest sister did happen to “randomly pull” the same Ken doll as her man of the house with alarming regularity.  It was OK, though.  I much preferred the tall drink of water we dubbed “Dave” to her long-haired, hippie-looking “Taylor” Ken doll.  Note: Dave was a “shavable Ken.”  If you ran hot water on his face, his beard would disappear.  He came with some lovely accessories, including mini razors and an Old Spice bottle.  I also accidentally left him propped against the radiator in our bedroom and his arm melted a little bit, which only made him the more endearing to me; I believe I pitched this mild deformity as a “childhood accident” involving an elaborate act of heroism on his part.  But I digress.)  Once the Barbie lottery was complete, we set about designing our homes and building our little Barbie village.  We had long, elaborate plots which often involved marriages, career changes, births, social events, and, occasionally, deaths.  Yes, deaths.  Things got real in our Barbie world.  The most glaring example has to be our elaborate, 3-day recreation of one of the “Little House on the Prairie” stories, over the course of which one of our Kens “fell off the wagon” (an upturned container store bin with toy horses attached to the front via string and Scotch tape), was attacked by wolves, and died.  We had a moving burial service for him during which my next youngest sister brought a tear to all of our eyes with her poignant rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

Reliving these memories makes me laugh and also sort of want to cry at the same time.  What a beautiful time in our lives — that unbridled creativity, those hours spent laughing and bonding together in our footed pajamas and bowl cuts.  It’s no surprise, in a sense, that I wound up so fascinated by clothing and its utility as a tool for reinvention and reimagining.  This post, then, is a tribute to Barbie, my first true fashion love.  I’ll be featuring items that just feel like Barb herself.

First up: two pitch-perfect accessories in delicious Barbie pink: the ultimate handbag ($1,450, Miu Miu) and some ridiculously adorable pastel gingham flats ($40, ASOS):

Or, pair these semi-fierce drops ($328, Auden Designs) in just the right color palette –

– with a perfect pink blouse (DVF, $265, Net-A-Porter), a white eyelet skirt (Marc Jacobs, $350, Stylebop), and an edge-adding McQueen scarf ($445, Net-A-Porter) for a polished look:

Finish with perfect peeptoe heels (Jimmy Choo, $695, MyTheresa):

Plus, every Barbie girl needs a pink phone.  Isn’t this iPhone attachment ($29, Nordstrom) beyond adorable?!

Don’t forget the pitch-perfect manicure (Deborah Lippmann’s “Pretty Young Thing” and “Daytripper” — $16, Barney’s):

I’m also digging the unique shape of this Cacharel number ($354, Farfetch), paired with this fun Fiona Paxton statement necklace ($345, ShopKitson):

Though I can’t imagine Barb in flat sandals, I’d tone done the frou-frou with these simple yet glam flats (Rachel Zoe, $235, Nordstrom):

Finally, a GLAM SLAM bag (so darling! — Valentino, $1,195, Shirise):

Or, if you really want to go Barb Doll-chic, check out this bananas statement piece skirt (Preen, $2,335, Net-A-Porter), which I’d tone down just a touch with a white shell (Marc Jacobs, $228, Shopbop — or get the look for less with this $49 BB Dakota top) and these dressed-up enormastuds ($395, Asha):

In real life, I would tone the look down with some neutral pumps in a camel or blush tone, but since we’re going full-on Barbaholic, let’s finish with these hot pink Louboutins ($895, Net-A-Porter), this dazzling Chanel crossbody ($4,812, Matches), and these phenom retro-styled shades ($230, Rebecca Minkoff):

Or, swap out some of the pricey additions mentioned above for this affordable but fun statement piece ($52, Lydell), a stark white cross-body at a more affordable price (Rebecca Minkoff, $250, Zappos — also comes in dazzling neon yellow and hot pink!)

For rainy days, I’m loving this whimsical umbrella (Felix Rey, $65, Bloomingdale’s) paired with — sigh — Hunter boots (yes, there is a time and place for everything…generally, I’m so bored of Hunter boots and their overpopulation on the streets of D.C. — $125, PinkMascara):

Perfection with this TDF colorblocked trench ($1,067, Farfetch):

Swoonskis.

And now — drumroll please — the winner of the Laura James Jewelry giveaway is: SHANA!  Shana, I’ll be in touch to get your gift card over to you!

Blue Crush

In Accessories, Americana, Brights!, Florals, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on April 18, 2012 at 9:19 am

No, this is not a surf-related post. When I see Elle and Vogue run “surfer-inspired” or “scuba-inspired” looks, I want to barf.  There is just no way you will con me into sporting anything that looks like diving gear in real life.  And scene.  The inspiration for this post instead stems from lovely chinoiserie and ginger jars, which seem to be cropping up all over the place on Pinterest.

And PSST — you can get your own styles from C. Wonder and Emilia Ceramics!

This DVF wrap dress ($345, Net-A-Porter) is therefore right up my alley.  I’d pair it with this beautiful azalea necklace from J. Crizzle ($150, J. Crew):

I would pair it with these stunning denim platforms (Rupert Sanderson, $590, Ssense):

Finish with a boxy white purse (Milly, $395, PiperLime):

The perfect little accessory?  This fun little chinoiserie iPhone cover ($39, Zazzle):

Or — how much do you die over this asymmetrical blouson-style maxi (on sale for $237, Rebecca Taylor)?!  I’d pair it with a blue statement necklace ($363, Charm and Chain):

LOVE!  Finish with some glam slam sandals ($170, Shopbop) and this TDF clutch ($395, Kotur):

I might finish with this ultra-covetable YSL ring (available through e-consignment shop Style Sequel, which one of my lovely readers owns! — bid now before it escapes!)

For something in a brighter color palette, consider this amazing turquoise dress ($295, Built By Wendy):

Would look unbelievably eye-catching with this statement necklace (what a find! — $42, Lydell) and these stunning Rupert Sanderson wedges ($875, MyTheresa):

At the risk of being a little matchy-matchy, consider this roomy tote ($825, Boyy):

I might finish with some of these chunky bangles by Flutter NYC ($185 and $190, Flutter NYC):

I’m also loving this chic little collar necklace (interesting fabrication — $48, ShopKitson) with a simple kimono-sleeve dress ($145, We Like Fashion).

I’d finish with a funky pair of printed flats ($135, J. Crew)

Finish with a pop of yellow in the form of this darling Reed Krakoff crossbody ($590, MyTheresa — alternately, this $198 Vince Camuto variation might be up your alley/more friendly to your wallet):

Or, how about this darling and versatile lace shift (Tibi, $365, PiperLime) with a piece from my new favorite jewelry designer, Holst + Lee ($535, Latitude)?

Kind of amazing with these chinoiserie-inspired tootsies ($885, Net-A-Porter):

For just a pop, consider this carry-all from DVF ($98, Cusp) — perfect for the gym or beach — or these unbelievable Prada tootsies ($445, Bluefly).  I’m not normally one for kitten heels, but how darling would these look with some skinnies and an oversized white blouse?

Or, the contrary — go whole hog with this darling shift ($98, Dalaga)!

AND NOW — the moment you all have been waiting for: the winner of the two JLW Shop Around cards go to Mimi and Daphne!  I’ll be in touch so we can make sure to get these cards into your hands by the weekend!  If you did not win but are local to the D.C. area and want to participate in the program, please buy a ticket here.  Thanks to Courtney and the ladies of the Junior League for their generosity!

Honeymooning Around

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Jewelry, Romantic, Shoes, Sundresses, The Honeymoon Trousseau on April 17, 2012 at 9:15 am

Important preface: be sure to scroll to the bottom of this post for TWO exciting giveaways!  EEE!

Also, I may have bragged last week about an upcoming tripski to Turnberry Isle, which has obviously sent me into a full-on shopaholic frenzy of wardrobe-planning activity just shy in its level of intensity to the pre-honeymoon “situation” I succumbed to nearly two years ago.  {Imagine the Tazmanian Devil ripping through your local Neiman Marcus.  That was me.}  Based on a few telling emails from my lovely bride-to-be readers, I am not alone in this — many of you are trolling your local storefronts designing the ultimate honeymoon trousseau, and I think it’s about time t0 compare notes.  I’m debuting a new packing strategy for this upcoming trip, which I must attribute to my uber-coordinated madre: I’m trying to pick a bunch of separates in coordinating colors so I can mix and match.  The color for this trip will be: HOT PINK.  {Turnberry is, after all, just outside of Miami.}  The plan is to mix it in with separates in different bold hues — but everything MUST play well with hot pink.  So, for the trip down, my thought is: an eyelet/lace top ($110, Net-A-Porter) with white skinnies (many of you swear by Hudson Jeans for your white jeans, but I’m still a J. Brand gal, through and through), a neon-accented necklace (I just snapped this style up, and am itching for it to arrive — $42, LeifShop), and some bold sandals ($125, Shopbop):

Lovely with a simple cross-body purse {for essentials like phone, boarding pass, and ID — $148, Ann Taylor):

Because I always get cold on flights {and the above look is a little loud for pre-Miami arrival}, I’d slip into a navy blazer ($198, J. Crew) and pack a scarf/pashmina ($195, Virgina Johnson):

Finally, layer on some of these fun nautical style bracelets from Maine-based jewelry line Ropes ($52, Snappy Turtle — also available here):

Upon arrival, I would swap out for an airy, punchy caftan ($375, Sheridan French) accented by a turquoise pendant necklace ($225, Max and Chloe)

I’d finish with a simple jute tote (Rebecca Minkoff, $195, Endless):

– and some fab jute wedges (DVF, $278, Shopbop):

For beach-side/pool-side lounging, I might pair this straw hat ($96, Hat Attack) with this unbelievable affordable find ($29, Old Navy)

I was torn between the Old Navy style above and this $158 Splendid variation, but in the end, went with the budget-friendly version!  I might accent with these fun little drops ($22, Color Block Shop) and this fun cuff ($325, ShopKitson) to transition from the pool to lunch/dinner/cocktails:

Or keep the add-ons to a minimum and instead pair with this Celine-look-alike tote ($99!!!!!, ModCloth):

Meanwhile, this hot pink tote ($214, Matches) is a must-have, and would go equally well with this darling little tunic ($215, Virginia Johnson):

Finish with this fun pendant necklace ($74, BaubleBar):

Or, how about for a date night out, this silky little dream (on sale for $118, Rebecca Taylor) with some orange drops ($34, BaubleBar):

Fun with these color-blocked wedges ($385, MyMu) and this punchy clutch (WOW, color — around $500, Anya Hindmarch):

Finally, if you’re still looking for some easy daywear, check out the punchy pareos from Antik Batik (aorund $180, Antik Batik); the fun collection from Seaton Surf, including this punchy cover-up ($198, Seaton Surf); and the neon flips from Tkees ($48, Shopbop):

I can almost taste the daiquiris now…and PSST.  If you’re still not satisfied/need more inspiration for your honeymoon trousseau, check out the Mara Hoffman collection for more day-glo, honeymoon-ready picks.  OLE!

DON’T FORGET to leave a comment on yesterday’s post if you want to win the $50 gift card to Laura James Jewelry!  BUT — I have another awesome treat for you: A friend of mine — one of the coolest little chic peas in D.C. — belongs to the Junior League of Washington and has announced that the JLW is oh-so-generously giving away two Junior League of Washington Shop Around cards to two lucky Magpies!  These cards are good for 20 percent discounts at a variety of shops (including Kate Spade, Urban Chic, Dawn Price Baby, Stuart Weitzman, Brooks Brothers, Vineyard Vines, and Juicy Couture), spas, restaurants and bars (and the Bar Method) from April 21-28.  The cards usually sell for $25 each, with all proceeds going to fund community programs, scholarships and other Junior League literacy efforts. I know that I’ve been a bad bloggerina when Mr. Magpie emails me and asks: “Where is Mrs. Magpie?  We miss her blog.”  Pout.  I was in Boston the majority of last week, where I was attending a work conference, getting lots done, networking my little tuchus off, and every now and then, wondering why there were so many ill-fitting suits amongst fellow conference attendees.  Ahem.  I get the fact that we need to look professional and presentable, but why does that need to be boring?  I’ve been wearing my favorite work-appropriate Milly and Diane Von Furstenberg numbers with heels that are admittedly a touch on the high side for this staid audience, and have actually enjoyed getting dressed every morning…I hate to be snarky.  And I know that fashion is not a high priority for lots of successful business women, nor need it be.  I get that sometimes a loud outfit can distract or confuse, and that in certain cases, you want to telegraph a certain amount of seriousness via your carriage and the outfit you don.  But what a drab melange of browns and grays, gag-worthy 1.5″ chunky heels, and awkward laptop bags.  Yuck central.  I’d strongly suggest a trim dress along the lines of this DVF wonder (perfect, season-less investment piece! — $400, Net-A-Porter) with some classic pearl enorma-studs (KJL, $51, Thomas Laine):

I like this with pearls — but try something with a little edge, like this neon citrine yellow-accented pearl tassel necklace ($195, Rebecca Taylor) and this chartreuse-and-camel purse ($240, Beckley Boutique):

Finish with these on-point heels ($198, BCBG):

Keeping in the same, au-courant color palette of chartreuse and nude/neutral, consider this statement blouse (Gucci, $690, Net-A-Porter) with a simple, versatile camel pencil skirt (Max Mara, $237, Matches) and some drops ($68, Nordstrom):

Finish with a  structured tote (this goes perfectly! — Reed Krakoff, $1,090, Nordstrom) and these statement-making Carven heels ($665, Net-A-Porter):

If I had unlimited funds, I would just go for it.  Look polished and presentable but also dress like you know what you’re doing.  If we’re really talking dreams, can you imagine this bananas pink boxy top ($580, Net-A-Porter) with some fit and flare white trousers ($255, Barney’s — and PSST, these trousers are from Derek Lam’s spinoff line, 10 Crosby, which is overall lovable) and a Suzannai Dai stunner ($365, Suzanna Dai)?!

A pointy toed pump is the perfect accent-piece in any neutral shade — blush pink, dove gray, etc.   {This Kate Spade pair is perfect.} But if we’re really talking big dreams, I gotta have the Valentino rockstuds ($919, MyTheresa) and this simple, structured Victoria Beckham tote (no idea why the price is so ridonculous, but from a purely aesthetic standpoint, it is a lovely bag — $2,700, Net-A-Porter):

Or — loving the idea of a nude blouse ($260, Net-A-Porter) beneath a crisp white blazer (Rag + Bone, $535, Barney’s) and some shocking pink tailored pants (DVF, $285, Shopbop):

I’d finish with these TDF Louboutins (on super sale for around $400, Ekseption) and a crisp white carry-all ($575, Barney’s):

Alternately, take things to a nautical place with some fun flower earrings (Kate Spade, $58, Nordstrom), this amazing necklace ($395, Ben-Amun), this silken dream (on sale for $225, Rebecca Taylor):

I’d finish with some statement heels (O.M.G. — Charlotte Olympia, $875, Net-A-Porter) and this printed tote (Pierre Hardy, $850, Net-A-Porter — very Goyard-like!):

If you’re looking for some investment accessories that can add interest and polish to your work wardrobe, consider these to-die-for vintage Chanel drops ($598, Farfetch), which go with an.y.thing or these open-woven flats (Marc Jacobs, $392, Forzieri):

BEST.WEEK.EVER.

a)  My baby sister is ENGAGED!  EEEE!!!  I’m dying with excitement.

b)  I finally bucked up (bucked down?) and bought the Alexander Wang bag I’ve been whining about for about a century.  It brought a tear of joy to my eye when it arrived.  It is beautiful and so grown-up and everything I wanted it to be and more and…it’s mine!  {Fist pump.}

c)  Mr. Magpie caught me off guard by announcing that he is taking me away to Turnberry Isle for a romantic getaway weekend in just a few short weeks!!!  I’m pretty much doing back flips with glee and excitement, but also keenly aware of the fact that I need to do something serious about my winter-induced pallor.  My legs are translucent.  {He’s also signed us up for a round of golf, which should be laughable on my score.}

d)  My other baby sister got earned {she’s so qualified, it’s no joke} a fashion design job for an AMAZING, high-end fashion line.  I don’t know if I can mention which it is until she’s actually started, so…let’s just say I look forward to being well-outfitted thanks to her, and the steep discount I hope she’ll pass along my way.

e)  It’s almost Easter, which means I can almost eat my favorite sweet indulgent in the universe: Haribo gummies.  Yes ma’am.  Don’t even think that I won’t be rising with the sun to tear into a bag of gummy bears.

I’m sorry for being a braggart, but I am literally bursting with joy.  Life is too good.  And here are some things that are making my life even sunnier and brighter:

1.  The Perfect Vacation Sandal

I’m sorry to do this, but indulge me: I have freakishly small feet, and I can squeeze into these kids’ sandals ($49, Zara) in a size 5.  Are they not the most adorable pair of shoes you ever saw?  Imagine it with a hot pink pedi.  Score.  You can get a similar look in a regular, non-pixie adult size here or here.

2.  Bright Tote

I saw this reversible leather tote (white on one side, citrine on the other), and fell head over heels in love.  Such a fun color for right.now, and, when you’re sick of it, just turn it inside out for basic white ($399, Scoop):

3.  Chunky Necklaces

I saw a very chic lady snag an oversized chain-link necklace at a cute new boutique in North Georgetown last week called Dalton Pratt and have been on the hunt for something comparable since.  These colorful statement pieces ($26, BaubleBar) fit the bill nicely.

4.  Ikat Maxi

Holy moly — is this skirt ($325, Calypso) a vacation dream or what?!  I’ve been a bit tentative with the maxi skirt trend — I snagged one hot pink maxi at a ridiculous deal and it worked really well with a simple white tee and ginormous statement necklace, but…not until I saw this did I consider adding to the collection.  Can you imagine how chic you’d be styling it with a simple white tank and an oversized turquoise necklace?!

Perfect for a dinner out with Mr. Magpie while at Turnberry…!

5.  Speaking of Ikat…

These funky ikat print pillows from Amber Interiors ($60 each) caught my eye as a funky way to spruce up a couch.

6.  Updated Bath Mat

OK, this is sort of minor and specific, but how precious are these reversible chevron bath mats ($38, Garnet Hill)?!  Just the thing to “juge” up a boring bathroom…

7.  White Out

I have a vision of myself prancing around Turnberry in a white get-up with perfectly bronzed shoulders and beachy hair.  Ha.  To achieve the look, consider this ridiculously affordable maxi ($19, Target)

Perfect with these studded flats ($295, Net-A-Porter — OR, for something cheaper, check these puppies out):

I’d finish with pops of turquoise in the form of these seahorse earrings ($38, Lilly Pulitzer) and this coral necklace ($32, J. Crew):

I’d perhaps store my shades in this darling pouch ($75, Rebecca Minkoff):

8.  Neutrogena Makeup Remover Towelettes

I realize this is neither high-fashion nor particularly interesting, but Neutrogena Makeup Remover towelettes ($7.95, Drugstore) make my life.  For those evenings where you’re just too tired to wash your face…they do the trick nicely.

9.  Retro Shades

Ugh, these lucite frame shades (Acne, $350, Saks) are just too cool for school.  They have just the right amount of frame.

10.  Fun Cutlery

How amazing is this neon cutlery set ($38, Site NYC)?!  LOVE the idea of packing this for a picnic or sprucing up a traditional tabletop with these as accents.  Cute.

Have a lovely weekend!

Perfect with this fiery red crossbody (the perfect size — $425, Barney’s):

And — I know I already featured these shoes earlier in the sand color, but the look would kind of be perfect with these wonderfully coordinated wedges ($205, Endless):

In Accessories, Brights!, Florals, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes on March 26, 2012 at 9:44 am

A few things for your Monday morning consideration:

1)  I went to a mall on Sunday.  I feel as though I hadn’t been to a mall since I was in 8th grade, and am now keenly aware of why I’ve been avoiding them for so long.  A) Abercrombie and Fitch still exists?  And they still insist upon dumping bottles of their cheap cologne all over their merchandise, dimming the lights so low that you can’t see your own hands, and playing throbbing music so you can’t hear yourself think?  Interesting.  I didn’t step inside, but the stench of that cologne stings the nostrils from miles away.  B)  Food Courts are depressing.  C)  Auntie Anne’s pretzels are the jam.  D)  I forgot that all middle school children congregate at malls on the weekends.  Makes sense given the constraints under which they live (no car; parental supervision needed), but also makes for an overall unpleasant shopping experience.  I cringed at many-a conversation overheard.  Poor little ones.  I was equally as clueless and gossipy at that age.  E) I’m not going back to a mall for a l-o-o-o-n-g time.  Thank God for online shopping.  And while we’re on the subject, my biggest latest score?!  This $59 gingham linen dress.  OMG.  So precious.

2) There is a bomb.com giveaway at the end of this post.  Stay tuned.

3)  Shahs of Sunset?  Oh, hell yeah.  That show is my new best friend.  Trashy and dramatic — just the way I like my Bravo programming.  GG needs to get a grip, and Reza is quite possibly the most entertaining reality TV star to grace the small screen in a long time.  {Sorry, Brad Goreski, you’ve been replaced.}  Please tune in and share your thoughts with the group.

4)  Absolutely hilarious reading?  Suri’s Burn Book.  (!  Comic genius!)  I spent about two hours reading through the archives the other day.  You’re welcome.

And now, to the meat: printed clothing.  Man did the line Tucker do a number on me — I’ve been loving prints for the past two years, ever since that line got big.  Lately, it’s all I’ve been wanting to buy.  Example 1: this amazing top ($490, Marni) with some trim black shorts (really into the idea of shorts for night-wear at the moment — $162, La Garconne) and lovely drop earrings (Marni, $400, Net-A-Porter):

Finish with these perfectly coordinated heels (Tibi, $365, Bloomingdale’s):

And how about this punchy pink purselette ($59, ModCloth):

Or, for the prepster in you, consider this charming sailboat print top (only $29, Old Navy) with flat-front shorts ($49, J. Crew) and a nautical-inspired rope-accented necklace (Marni, $690, Barney’s):

I’d finish with these adorable sandals (Fendi, $475, Farfetch):

I’d finish with a bronze cross-body (on sale for $445, Pret A Beaute):

Alternately, check out this fun shift dress ($195, Thistle and Clover) with a tonal pendant necklace (Trina Turk, $250, Bloomingdale’s):

Dreamy with these teal peeptoes ($89, Vince Camuto):

I like it finished with one of those awesome Chloe Marcies in a deep denim ($2,265, Barney’s):

Or, how about this pair of funky shorts (Jason Wu, $695, Kirna Zabete — or get a similar look for less with this $49 Gap pair, which I almost purchased this past weekend) with a pink blouse (love this collarless DVF style — $265, Net-A-Porter):

I’d finish with the world’s most perfect wedge (Ras, $250, Shopbop — check out all the other amazing colors this shoe comes in, and die with me!):

Tory Burch also has some amazing wedge/espadrille styles out this season.  She always nails it in the footwear department.  I’d finish the look above with a clean white crossbody (love this style — Reed Krakoff, $590, Neiman’s):

Finally, I recently saw this paisley dress at H&M ($49, H&M) and was smitten.  They’d already sold out in my size, but maybe one of you lucky magpies can snatch it up.  You should pair it with a statement necklace — either something chunky and white or something along the lines of this amazing style ($570, Ssense):

I’d tone down the craziness with some classic white pumps (how Carrie Bradshaw — $195, ShoptheShoeBox):

Finish with this blue tote ($99, Zara):

Want the look in a smaller dose?  Consider these accessories: first, the most amazing mixed-print wedges (Rupert Sanderson, $710, Ssense)

Or, what about these lovely and affordable clutches/wallets from Falcon Wright ($40-$52, Falcon Wright)?

And now, for what you’ve all been waiting for: the GIVEAWAY.  Today, the amazing team over at ShopSosie have offered one lucky duck reader this ah-may-zing shift dress!  All you have to do to win it?

1)  Like ShopSosie on Facebook.

2)  Leave a comment on this post telling me which of the items in today’s post tickled your fancy the most :)

Also, if you’d be a sugarplum and either like me on Facebook or follow me on Pinterest, I will count your entry TWICE!

A winner will be announced this Thursday, 3/29!

Punch Drunk

In Accessories, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on March 20, 2012 at 9:52 am

Yesterday, I wore a hot pink-and-orange-ombre skirt.  I was pretty much ecstatic all day long — that punch of pink was just what I needed to kickstart the week and take my mind off of missing Mr. Magpie, who is currently traveling in Panama with a few buddies.  {Is it uber-lame that he’s been gone less than 48 hours and I miss him already?  To the point that I may have worked out twice on Sunday just to keep myself busy and may have also found myself thumbing through our wedding album nostalgically?  Eep.  I swear I’m a strong and independent little lady, but my GOD, I miss that boy.}  Does clothing ever work as a mood enhancer for you, too?  If not, consider adding a dose of sherbert coloring to your wardrobe.  I swear it’ll put a little pep in your step.  Prozac in fabric form. {Incidentally, get the ceramic container below for $88 from Jonathan Adler — he has an entire collection of kitschy/cheeky canisters along the same lines.}

Take this as a point in case: I wore a variation on the following outfit in Vegas, and was in a great mood all day, even after I spilled a full vodka soda on myself while trying to squeeze it into one of the koozis I’d had custom made for the weekend {rookie mistake}: long maxi skirt ($148, J. Crew), white tee ($29, Madewell), a bold necklace in a bright, contrast-color hue ($140, Loren Hope), and some neutral t-straps ($69, Zappos):

Finish with this bomb.com chevron clutch ($199, Hammocks and High Tea):

Or, how about this striped, gauzey cardi ($155, Jades24) with a crochet necklace (loves! — $220, Emma Cassi), white skinnies, and some nude patent flat sandals (Gucci, $495, Saks)?

Ideal finished with the Reed Krakoff “Atlantique” tote ($1,415, Colette) I’ve been swooning over:

Alternately, go uber-bold with a pink-and-orange asymmetrical dress (M Missoni, $745, Harvey Nichols) with a mah-jor statement necklace (OMG…Vionnet, $749, MyTheresa):

I’d finish with these sparkling flat sandals ($110, WeLikeFashion) and a gold Kotur clutch ($400, Neiman’s):

Or, how much do you love this simple pleated shirt-dress ($100, TopShop)?  Lovely with a gold collar necklace ($228, Kate Spade):

I’d finish with simple gold pumps ($225, Vince Camuto) and a pink-and-orange purse ($595, Rebecca Minkoff):

Other punchy picks to blend into your wardrobe?  How about these retro-inspired shades (love the shape — $128, Kate Spade), this striped sleeveless blouse (Equipment, $208, Les Nouvelles), and these color-blocked sandals (Sergio Rossi, $275, Barney’s):

Or, check out this artful scarf ($175, Kelly Wearstler) — perfect paired with a color-blocked clutch ($46, Tobi):

Or, let the dress do all the work with this beyond adorable ikat shift dress ($395, Sheridan French) and some cluster earrings in the same palette (KJL, $90, Bloomingdale’s):

Dreamy with some fun white sandals ($171, Pret-A-Beaute) and a pink-trimmed straw clutch ($195, Otte NY):

Um, can anyone tell I’m dying for summer?!

The Weekly Mash Up

In Accessories, Brights! on February 24, 2012 at 10:05 am

This has become something of a tradish here at TFM — my end-of-week lusts-of-the-moment, none of which  conform to any overarching theme or trend.  Just — things that strike my fancy at the moment.

First up: rad neon sandals at an unexpectedly affordable price ($125, Rebecca Minkoff).  I want them in the bright yellow.  Oh, fine.  I’ll take them in both colors.  Ideal with white skinnies or a breezy voile dress.

I’m always on the hunt for bargain buys that can put a little pep in my step.  These raglan tees have the PERFECT color combos, an ideal stripe width, and would look ah-may-zing beneath a structured blazer.  The best part?  They’re on sale for $15.  Buy here.

My toiletry kits have seen better days — they’re looking a bit worse for the wear, so I’m on the hunt for a new set.  I’m loving these monogrammed styles ($128 each, Monogram Goods):

I’ve been on the prowl for a long, long time for just the right iPhone cover {there are way, way too many options…and I just can’t commit}, and I think I’ve finally found one I love enough to purchase.  Isn’t this floral print cover beautiful ($35, Society 6)?!

Love the combination of soft mauve and delicate gold bows.  The design of this trio of goodies is just too good to resist (earrings — $30, ModCloth; hair comb — $130, Suzannah; Annick Goutal perfume — $120, Bergdorf Goodman):

High-end pajamas feel like an outrageous extravagance — I’m usually found in ratty old tees borrowed from Mr. Magpie and well-worn boxers or boyshorts.  However.  How posh would you feel in this darling hot pink cotton set ($200, Journelle)?!

Ideal with the Missoni for Target throw (tons are still available on eBay! — see here!):

UM, this clutch ($24) is amazing.  That is all.

Love the sorbet hues of these beaded necklaces ($31 each, Vamoose).  I’d like one in each color.  Thanks.

If I bought every patterned tray featured on this blog, my home would be pretty much carpeted in trays.   I don’t know what it is about them — just love the idea of a pretty display.  And this Matisse-inspired style by linen design genius D. Porthault is a must ($175, Sue Fisher King).  Wouldn’t the beads above look lovely set-up atop?

I love a patterned scarf.  I throw mine around my neck to juge up a simple tunic and leggings or to distract fellow gym-goers from my sweaty face post-work-out.  They are a mah-jor magpie must.  These ikat styles from Sir Alistair Rai ($85, PiperLime) are right up my alley.

OK, my love bugs…have a happy weekend!

Denimography

In Accessories, Americana, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes on February 23, 2012 at 1:06 pm

Fun fact: neither my mother nor my father own a pair of jeans.  It honestly boggles my brain to envision either of them duding around in denim — they’re both far too formal.  I, on the other hand, live and breathe in jeans.  Quite the jean-eration gap.  HAHAHA.  Dumb.

Anyway, all bad puns aside, today, I thought it appropriate to finally pay homage to the fabric of my life.  Though I clearly am a skinny jean kinda gal, I’ve slowly been enticed by some of the boot cuts and wider leg styles coming back en vogue.  Check out these trouser-style jeans (Tibi, $285, Net-A-Porter).  Perfect with an airy voile top with something of a hippie vibe ($225, Calypso) and some big studs (Kenneth Jay Lane, $75, Net-A-Porter):

Finish with some brown leather wedges ($89, Zara):

– as well as a stack of patterned bangles ($21, ASOS) and the PS1 pochette in poppy python ($1,735, Proenza Schouler):

On the weekends, I’m all about chambray button-downs and tunics, like this style ($59, J. Crew), which I’d pair with leggings, a gauzy scarf (DVF, $250, Shopbop), and some mocs (I’m not sure the pricing on these puppies, but I just discovered them via Dee Keller!)

I’d finish with an easy carry-all (this clean white style startled me with its design — loves — $386, See Vivier):

Oh, and these rad frames from Elizabeth and James ($185 — a Shopbop exclusive!)

Alternately, go with the tangerine tango color by sporting this unbelievable open-weave lace top (Sass & Bide, $840, Net-A-Porter), enorma-studs ($770, Sue Fisher King), white skinnies, and these bad.ass. denim wedges (Chloe, $895, Net-A-Porter)

Kind of bomb with these bold, patterned clutcheroo ($235, Not Just a Label):

Or, how about this checked blouse ($140, Aubin and Wills) with a collarless boucle jacket (Zac Posen, on sale for $712, The Outnet — or get the look for less with this $89 Zara style), a tangly pearl necklace ($195, Juliet and Company), skinnies, and some spiffy flats (Kate Spade, $225, Bloomingdales):

I’d finish with a contrasting-colored cross-body ($238, J. Crew):

Finally, a few separates to put a little pep in your step — first, a denim blazer (I wear mine all.the.time, though mine cost only $29 at H&M! — ACNE, $530, Net-A-Porter):

And PSST.  If the blazer ain’t yo thang, check out this affordable ($74!) anorak variation!  Other possibilities?  An inexpensive denim clutch (love the fiery red zipper — $27, Motel Rocks) or a frilly denim top ($214, Farfetch) –

– either of which would look unbelievable with these blush-and-tangerine wedges ($99, Zara):

Ahhh, denim.  Endlessly versatile and fresh-looking.  I’m loving it in the mid-blue color at the moment…

And now, the real reason why you’re reading today’s post: the WINNER of the fab Stella + Dot giveaway from the lovely Dawn Biddlecomb!  The winner is: AMANDA!  All I have to say is: “Hey, purple.”  Haha.  Seriously loved the hilarious and at times painful/awkward responses this post received.  Thanks for sharing.  Amanda, drop me a line so we can ship you your AH-MAY-ZING necklace!

Sportive

In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Jewelry on February 20, 2012 at 10:08 am

When I lived in Lyon, France, I made a bee-line for the ridiculously overpriced and underwhelming “gym” (yes, that word should live in a serious set of air quotes, because it essentially consisted of a poorly ventilated room with a couple of old, rusty cardio machines adjacent to a dance studio with horrible overhead lighting and a noticeable B.O. problem) in an effort to stave off my homesickness…and any potential weight gain from the fantastic French fare.  Initially, I would slip into my gym gear at home and walk to the two blocks to the gym, but I resolved to pack my clothes after more than my fair share of eyebrow raised looks of confusion {based on the reception my get-up received, I would guess that wearing gym clothes outside of the home was tantamount to wearing your pajamas to Church or something, according to les lyonnais} and one particularly strange incident that I have puzzled over for years.  As I was walking down the street in my Nike spandex and windbreaker, a man leaned out of the window of his car and yelled, “Tu es sportive!”  He didn’t look particularly menacing or lewd; his delivery instead suggested that he was saying something along the lines of “Hey, you dropped your keys” or something of comparable neighborly kindness.  And “tu es sportive” translates to: “You look athletic”/”you are sporty.”  ?!  What was that?!  A cat-call?  Most random pick-up line ever — sorta like yelling, “You have red hair!” or “You’re wearing a green shirt!”  Strange.  Now Mr. Magpie and I will exchange faux “cat calls” along these lines every now and then — “you have really brown hair”; “you look sporty“; “you’re wearing running shoes!”  You know, things that sound like they might be compliments but actually achieve nothing.

All of this is a long wind-up to justify the title of this post, which came to mind after thinking about how much I’ve loved the slightly athletic/sport-inspired looks I’ve seen all over the runway.  I’m not into anything that’s literally akin to athletic gear {I don’t think I’ll ever get into the surfer girl styles — sorry, Proenza Schouler}, but certain color combinations (black and orangey-red) and smart cuts achieve the overall aesthetic.

For example, love this combo dress in the perfect racing colors (Sandro, $320, Net-A-Porter) alongside that fab J. Crew bubble necklace ($150, Net-A-Porter):

Ideal paired with these funky shoes (Vionnet, $925, The Corner):

And this perforated Givenchy tote ($1,445, Barney’s):

Or, how about this chevron-print button-front dress (Tucker, $380, Net-A-Porter), which lives in the same sporty color family, with a tasseled necklace (on sale for $319, Ten Over Six):

Oh-so-chic with some funky booties (Maison Martin Margiela, $895, Net-A-Porter):

Or, check out this perforated leather tote (affordable! — $89, Truvow):

Alternately, a boyfriend blazer ($78, Urban Outfitters) with a statement necklace ($88, Max & Chloe), black skinnies, some mah-jor boots ($605, Antik Batik):

Perfection with this geometric tote ($89, Rachel Roy):

Or, consider this silken muscle tee (3.1 Phillip Lim, $195, Otte) with a simple beaded necklace ($130, Ben-Amun) and black leather trim skirt (on sale for $180, Oxygene):

I’d wear it with this bucket bag (~$115, Mango) –

– and these ankle-strap heels ($120, Mango):

Or, a maxi dress (A.L.C., $795, Shopbop) with a lariat necklace ($88, Max and Chloe):

with some wedges (MyMu, on sale for $178, Les Nouvelles) and a tasseled clutchski ($128, Lulu Clutches):

And, in closing — a special treat for y’all: a giveaway for the most fab statement necklace…ever!  Get ready: Dawn Biddlecomb, an independent stylist for Stella & Dot, is treating one lucky reader to the Marrakesh Bib necklace seen below!  All you have to do is like Dawn on Facebook and leave a comment on this post telling me what the best or worst cat-call you’ve ever received is!  A winner will be announced this Thursday!

FRIDAY!!!!  I’m so happy to see you!  It’s already a great day because this fantastic old school jam by Color Me Badd aired on the radio early this a.m., much to my delight and glee.  Just the thing to greet the weekend.  As per usual, I’m far too excited to roll out a carefully organized post, so I’ll just pass along what’s been striking my fancy for the past week.

Did anyone else tune in to see the dog show earlier this week?  It only exacerbated my puppy fever.  I need a dog.  Now.  Mr. Magpie and I have long been debating between the Welsh Terrier and the French Bulldog, but my main objective at the moment is just to add a little four-legged pupperoo to our life, whichever breed he prefers.  This goal has, of course, sent me on a variety of imaginary shopping excursions for our little pup.  How darling are these dog beds ($59-$79 depending on size, Harry Barker)?!

Also, how cute are these personalized dog prints ($9, Fire Hydrant Press)?!  Is it too early to order one?!  (We already have the name picked out!)

Just when I thought Chloe’s Marcie couldn’t be any more covetable, they created a version in downtown-chic denim.  ACK.  I can’t decide which I love more — the crossbody ($525), the shoulder bag ($1,325), or the large satchel ($2,265).  So.so.amazing.

I’m attending two birthday affairs this weekend, and heading to Vegas in just two weeks for my bestie’s bachelorette.  Suffice to say, I’ve got celebration on the brain, and I need some killer kicks.  Loving (!) these polka dot mules from — who else?! — Kate Spade ($328, Jildor):

Yeah, neon is still rocking out in my world.  I’ve been sporting either shocking pink from Illamasqua ($14, Sephora) or poppy orange-red (Tom Ford, $30, Bergdorf’s):

I was up in NYC this past weekend for what might have been the most hilarious + fun weekend of my life.  I got to attend a fab blogger event hosted by Currently Obsessed, Shopbop, and ASOS at the Soho House in NY, explore Chelsea Market {which was hosting a pop-up “Swamp People” exhibit with REAL alligators!  Who would have thought I’d see an alligator in Manhattan?!}, hit up the Rubins art museum {fascinating, especially the murals on the 3rd floor}, eat lots.of.delicious.food {including at Spice Market — incredible!}, go wine tasting, people watch at the Standard Biergarten, and — sort of my favorite pitstop of the weekend — hit up the Rusty Knot for post-dinner drinks.  This place is kitschy.  Half of it sort of looks like a waiting room in a dentist’s office, with an awkward small-scale fish-tank and a strange lined-upalong-the-wall chair arrangement.  But the crowd was awesome and unpretentious, which was semi-refreshing after the “I’m very important and beautiful” vibe I witnessed at the Standard {can’t say it wasn’t a deserved ‘tude — there were lots of beautiful and important people there!}  At any rate, the Rusty Knot had the most INCREDIBLE frozen drink called — you guessed it — the Rusty Knot.  My cousin called them “frozen mojitos,” and that’s about accurate — I tasted mint, limes, and rum.  DELIGHTFUL.

{When I recreate them, I need to serve them in these cheeky plastic cups — $38 for sleeve of 25, Monogram Goods.}

Speaking of citrus, these 11×14 letterpress designs by Sycamore Street Press ($35 each) caught my eye.  I think they’d make a fun little installation on a white kitchen wall.

Love the retro appeal.  And how cool that they’re letterpressed?!

My bestie and I have weekly “sninner” + trashy tv + wine nights.  {Sninner = snack dinner, or lots of little appetizers instead of an actual meal.}  I try to switch things up when I’m hosting {for Italian — caprese salad, crusty bread, and Italian charcuterie; other times, it’s Greek — hummus and pita, spanokopita from Trader Joe’s, dried fruits, and olives; still other times, it’s Spanish — marcona almonds, manchego cheese, chorizo, etc.}  But the one staple?  Cheese.  I have to have it for our weekly sninner because Mr. Magpie is not a huge fan of the fromage.  {He had a rough experience with Mac & Cheese as a child, and has been leery of it every since.  Strange, in a sense, because he’s the ultimate adventurous eater otherwise.}  For this reason, I’ve had my eye on this brightly-colored cheese server kit from L’Aguiole ($32, Anthropologie)

I’ve also got my eye on these ceramic cheese markers ($35 for set, Rain Collection):

Alternately, for another serving option: I recently saw a cute presentation for a cheese board — serve it on a chalkboard — and have been contemplating doing something similar.  Buy one here or take on the DIY challenge with instructions here.

There’s no legitimate explanation for needing or wanting this camera ($90, ModCloth), but it’s cool.  Enough said.

…and not just any jewelry.  I’m all about pops of sapphire blue, like these Bounkit drops ($395, Charm & Chain) and this gumball stone bracelet ($45, J. Crew) as well as citrine/neon yellow ($24 for necklace, ColorBlockShop):

Finally, I really must own this hot pink mini from Robert Rodriguez ($395, Shopbop).  It’s a done deal.

The color!  The scalloped hem!  I die.  (And PSST.  I know I feature a lot of Diane von Furstenberg already, but please take a minute to check out the amazing color palette she’s made available this season.  DIE.

HAPPY WEEKEND!

Pink Ladies

I have no idea what made me reminisce about Grease the other day, but it was one of my very favorite movies growing up, along with Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken {don’t even talk to me if you’ve not seen this CLASSIC} and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers {loved all of those Rogers & Hammerstein musicals, but that one was the most cherished}.  Danny was the ultimate stud-muffin, and I clearly strove to emulate Olivia Newton John’s breathy, wide-eyed innocence…and then her bad-ass leather pantalon getup at the end.  But I mainly wanted to be a Pink Lady.  And I still do.  Get the look with your own shades-of-pink get-ups.  For starters, I love this simple and unfussy silken tank (Tibi, $160, Net-A-Porter) with highly unseasonal white jeans (I know, I know — it was 25 degrees outside this a.m., but the promise of warmer climes is keeping me going) and a tribal plate-style necklace ($29, Miss Selfridge’s):

Accessories-wise, how about these pink-on-red tootsies ($436, Barbara Briones)?

I’d tie it all together with a gold cuff ($65, Bloomingdale’s) and an ikat clutch (I know I’ve featured this before, but how amazing?! — $63, 100 Layer Cake):

For just a POP of pink, consider this fun neon watch ($44, ASOS), a shocking pink mani (I own this exact color from Illamasqua — called “Collide” — and LOVE it — $14, Sephora), and a bold pink blush (Nars, $28, Bloomingdale’s):

Or, sport a monogrammed clutch (well, actually — it’s a cosmetics pouch, but I’d totally rock it during the day — $128, Monogram Goods) and some Barbie pink heels (I die. — $595, Neiman Marcus):

Or, pump things up with a bow-front denim blouse ($227, Farfetch — or get this far more affordable version from ASOS for only $62!), some fuchsia skinnies ($158, Shopbop), and some oversized gold earrings ($1,820, Nordstrom):

Finish with a lighter shade in the pink color family by pairing with these B by Brian Atwood heels I’ve been dying over ($325, Intermix)

With colors so bright, I’d keep the accessories to a muted minimum — I’m thinking just this envelope clutch ($325, Saks):

Or, thoughts on a crisp white tee ($29.50, Madewell), some colorful beaded necklaces ($173 each, Wendy Mink), and a punchy floral-print skirt (OMG — Nanette Lepore, $298, Saks)?
