While in Miami with Mr. Magpie last week (hard to believe that was just over a week ago…it already feels like vague and dreamy memory), we listened to the Otis Redding channel on Pandora pretty much nonstop whenever we were in our hotel room (or on its balcony, enjoying G+Ts). We both have a soft spot for Mr. Redding — his “Ton of Joy” was our wedding song. Even now, just hearing the opening bars makes my stomach do flip flops. We had taken dance classes over a series of weeks leading up to the wedding and had learned a simplified version of the rumba for our dancing debut. We didn’t exactly have a “routine” — we didn’t want it to look cheesy and rehearsed — but it felt appropriate to actually dance rather than awkwardly, asynchronously rock back and forth. (I was not blessed with rhythm. Mr. Magpie was — he’s a talented drummer — but that will only take you so far. As they say, it takes two to tango.) I have to say, though, that we ruled our dance. So fun. Now, if only we could remember how to do the entire thing…one of the many casualties of time, I suppose?
At any rate, one of the songs that came up on the Otis channel while in Miami was Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic,” which for some reason caught me completely off guard with its raw poignancy. I love when the brass comes in loudly halfway through the song — the perfect counterpart to the growly, soulful timbre of Morrison’s voice. Though the song is a throwback to my early college years (when a crush burned me a Van Morrison mix CD, and I listened to it over…and over…and over), it will now forever be associated with the cozy luxury of that Miami trip. I’ve clearly been listening to Van Morrison nonstop since, and his music has been percolating everything I’ve done this week. Hence, the title of this post — an adaptation of the classic “Tupelo Honey” song title.
And scene. Longest wind-up ever. On to the meat of the matter: the ORANGE/TANGERINE color I’m digging so much. Consider, for example, this awesome striped scarf (NEED — $125), a crisp white blazer ($535), and dressed-down denim shorts ($59):
For Memorial Day pool festivities (YES!), how about this little spot of sunshine in the form of a cover up (I know, I’m over the moon with love for LemLem these days — $200):
And — of course — an orange two-piece by the one and only Mara Hoffmann ($200)!
P.S. I love the entire Mara Hoffmann collection. Have I mentioned this before?! LOVE the colors, styles, shapes. TO DIE. Imagine laying out on this zebra-hide-style towel by Maslin ($225) — stylin’, eh?
I’d round it out with these aqua-and-brown leather flat sandals ($89):
And then maybe this simple striped and knotted SeaBags tote ($165):
