Magpie Musts: Spring Edition

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Brights!, Magpie Must on April 30, 2012 at 2:13 pm

It’s been a long while since I ran one of these bad-boys, but it’s about time I revisited, if only to lend provisional structure to my “things I like today” posts.  So: here goes.  Looks, trends, products that are on my radar this spring.

I was just as leery of this trend as the next body-conscious fashionista when it first surfaced on the runways.  Who wants volume right at the hips?!  It seemed counter-intuitive, and almost as stupid as the whole pajama trend.  (EwGag.  And are you serious?!  I love you, Hanneli, but come on!  You look like a jailbird.) But then there were these visions:

(PSST.  Love the pink Jason Wu dress above?  You can snag it here for a casual $3K.  NBD.)  And then I started taking cues from street-savvy fashionistas…

UM, yeah.  Talk about a dramatic/cool silhouette.  Loves.  I’m going to invest (lightly) in the trend with this affordable eyelet topper ($59, PiperLime)…but this fun little romp of a dress caught my eye as well (Lilly, $198, Neiman’s).  I love that the peplum is on a small/manageable scale.

Alternately, how fresh are these tops from Marc by Marc Jacobs ($258, Shopbop)?!

Mr. Magpie and I enjoyed a lovely date night (pre-dinner champagne + dinner + movie) on Saturday, and it was super fun to get all dolled up for the occasion.  I decided to test-drive a look I’ve been seeing a lot lately — hot pink lips.

So, I debuted my new YSL Rouge Pur Couture lipstick in Fuchsia Innocent ($30, Barney’s), and — much to my surprise — Mr. Magpie loved it.  He usually doesn’t like a lot of loud makeup, so I was a little surprised/thrilled by this discovery.

Just take a look at the lovely, glamorous Olivia P. to understand where I’m coming from with this one:

Sigh.  And, um, I love you, Rebecca Minkoff.  You just keep getting better and better, don’t you?  Thanks for recently dipping into the sunglasses market, because I’m smitten with every style you’ve released, but most notably the Bedford ($230, Shopbop).

No, not real-life revenge.  I’m talking about the deliciously outlandish and dramatic ABC series, which I inconveniently (or conveniently, depending on how you look at time spent watching trashy tv) stumbled upon while traveling for work, and have found myself obsessively watching on my iPad, late at night when I should be sleeping.

My girlfriends and I get together almost once a week for a wine + sninner night.  (Sninner = snack dinner, aka the bane of Mr. Magpie’s existence.  He needs a full, well-rounded meal.)  One of the best recent discoveries was a delightful little pairing of a wedge of manchego with a smear of membrillo (quince paste) atop a cracker.  O.M.G.  So delish.  (P.S. — do you love the monogrammed cocktail napkin?  Get your own here for $10 a pop.)

Mr. Magpie and I are big time cocktail lovers, but I must admit to a flavor-of-the-month tasting personality when it comes to them.  I’m the type of person who finds, falls in love with, and then promptly exhausts and retires something — whether it be a new favorite song, a piece of jewelry, or a cocktail.  (I’m getting dangerously close to the “exhaust and retire” phase for Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend.”  So.delicious.)  Mr. Magpie mocks me relentlessly on this flaw of mine.  But then he totally enables it because he’s an incredibly talented and dedicated mixologist — he infuses his own liquors, has made his own soda, and cares about little things like finding the best tonic water out there to make the ultimate G+T (in case you’re wondering, it’s Fever Tree tonic).  Further, if you ever come by for cocktails chez Magpie, your drink will never go unadorned — Mr. Magpie loves a nice garnish.  At any rate, my latest cocktail favorite is what I’ve taken to calling the Mr. Magpie Muddle.  It’s basically a margarita but with the limes all muddled up at the bottom and only a touch of sweetener.  Super tart, super delicious…and super potent.  (Straws pictured below are available on the cheap here.)

My mouth is sort of watering right now…

I’m proud of my adventurousness with nail colors this year.  I finally deviated from my classic orangey-red standbys (Escapades and Geranium) and have tested out everything from lilac to, yes, the darker hues.  But my favorite out-of-the-box color is Essie’s Marshmallow ($8, Nordstrom).  It looks stark white in the bottle, but it comes out this lovely, very polished (hehe, pun intended) hue that lends a little glam elegance to any look.

How amazing are these bad boys from BaubleBar?!  $36.  Done and done.

Welcome, spring!  What are your musts for this season?!

Walking on Sunshine

In Accessories, Brights!, Jewelry, Olivia Palermo, Shoes on April 26, 2012 at 1:00 pm

It’s gray and rainy outside, so hopefully this post will bring a little sunshine to your day.  Convenient framework, in a sense, because yellow has been all.the.rage. as a hot color this season.

Yes, yes, yes.  I want it all.  Especially that denim shirt with the yellow chiffon skirt combo.  Genius.  Top picks?  This woven clutch (just the right amount of neon — $155, Bottica) and these slick flats ($69, Nine West):

And — how freaking phenomenal is this investment-worthy necklace (KJL, $3,750, Moda Operandi)?!  I mean, I die and go to heaven.

Arresting with a simple, dressed down look — taking a cue from above by pairing a denim button-down ($79, Madewell) with some crisp yellow shorts ($45, J. Crew):

I’d finish with some understated brown t-straps (on sale for $80, MustHaves) and a fun cross-body ($395, Rebecca Minkoff — and check out the whole Rebecca Minkoff collection for more fun bright yellow separates!)

Maybe throw in a cool-gal fedora (Noel Stewart, $395, Barney’s)?

How awesome would it be paired with this affordable denim tunic dress ($39, Joe Fresh — and PSST, if you’re a touch of a label snob — no judgement — check out the awesome denim pieces from Tory Burch) and a tortoise-link necklace ($175, Shopbop)?!

I’d finish with these awesome statement Choos ($875, Net-A-Porter):

Love it finished with a Chloe Marcie ($495, Ssense):

Or, how about this throw-on-any-time yellow number ($143, Pret-A-Beaute) with a simple lucite link necklace ($125, Endless)?!

I kind of love it finished with this ikat-print cross-body ($112, Dealuxe) and those laser-cut Chloe wedges I’ve featured a number of times…they just go with everything! ($595, Bloomingdales):

Or, how about this blouson-style colorblock top ($118, RGB)?  Crisp with a tangly statement necklace ($428, Nordstrom), white jeans and those dreamy Valentino Rockstud gladiators (yah, right — $845, Forward):

I’d finish with a simple, structured tote ($68, Romwe):

Also very much into this 3.1 Phillip Lim skirt ($420, TheCorner) which I’d style semi-Miami-Vice with a white blazer ($535, Rag + Bone):

Sort of Kourtney K, isn’t it?!  And let’s be honest, I sweat her.  Round it out with these woven wedges ($865, Mulberry) and this laser-cut clutch ($128, BCBG):

Or, if you’re into yellow that leans towards the neon side of things, consider this bold bangle ($68, Ann Taylor) –

and these fun wedges ($134, Heels):

In closing, let’s swoon over this delightful structured bag (Reed Krakoff, $1,190, Net-A-Porter)?

Future Perfect

In Accessories, Dream Wear, Glitter, Jewelry, Shoes, White on April 25, 2012 at 11:30 am

While on a recent business trip, Mr. Magpie insisted that we “Face Time” each other.  As the technology luddite I am, I had only a vague, unfounded, and technically oblivious idea of what this meant.  One evening in my hotel room, I simply opened up my iPad and — BAM.  There he was.  A life-size version of his cute little face peering back at me.  It totally caught me off guard, to the point that I almost freaked out.  The picture quality, the audio — it was all crystal clear and in real time, and it occurred to me then that we really live in the future.  (Think about it — do you remember the face in the magic mirror from the Disney cartoon Snow White?  That was meant to be understood as supernatural sorcery — but here we are, living that reality.)  Does current technology ever catch you off guard like that?  Sometimes I think we’re living the Jetson lifestyle.  Inspired by this experience, I’d like to channel this futurism fashion-wise in this post, taking my cues from this lovely look:

Ahh, SILVER.  As one of you lovely Magpies pointed out in a comment on yesterday’s post, silver is like the forgotten stepsister of the metallic color family.  Everyone’s been so heady with gold over the past few seasons, I feel that silver looks fresh, new, born again.  So, first up — how chic would you feel with this serious statement necklace (Erickson Beamon, $980, Moda Operandi), a collarless white blouse ($230, MustHaves) and this silver circle skirt (on sale for $88, Dealuxe):

Pretty much TDF with a pair of simple black pumps (the Pigalles are iconic, though my boss owns these badboys and swears that they are the world’s cruelest joke on womankind…#pure-pain.  Ew, did I just hastag? — $625, Net-A-Porter) and a mega-stud clutchski (Alaia, $1,473, Boutique1):

Speaking of studs — and these are NOT for the fashion faint-of-heart (slash — Mom, avert your eyes), these puppies ($78, Romwe) seem like something Olivia Palermo might rock in a serious and somehow polished way:

Kind of ah-may-zing with any of Alexis Bittar’s futuristic baubles (bangles, $325 apiece, Alexis Bittar):

Woah, woah, woah.  Back to items within my fashion orbit: check out this glitterati skirt ($270, All Saints) with a simple, buttoned-down-to-there white blouse ($100, Net-A-Porter) and enorma-necklace (holy majoley, I NEED THIS — $148, BCBG):

Finish with these unbelievable Bottega Veneta wedges (wowza — $820, Net-A-Porter) and this YSL clutchski ($750, Cultstatus):

Or, do you not love the idea of these silver pantalons (Alexander McQueen, $910, Farfetch) with a collarless white blouse ($195, Very Eickhoff), a large, eye-catching necklace (Lulu Frost, $500, Charm & Chain), and a pair of boldly colored flats ($190, Net-A-Porter):

Perfection with this dreamy little clutchski (who else but Alexander Wang?! — $650, Kirna Zabete):

Or, how about this sashed sequin dress (DVF, $498, Intermix) with some deco-style drops ($120, Max and Chloe):

Consider how glam this look would be with these amazing PVC-accented Thierry Mugler shoes ($1,225, Opening Ceremony — or get the look for less with this $57 pair) and this cross-hatched clutch ($106, Endless):

This in turn reminds me of these eye-catching flats, which I want to pair with oh, just about everything ($49, Zara):

Or, do we not love this faux-wrap skirt ($490, Net-A-Porter) with a black blouse ($98, J. Crew) and a pair of statement drops ($160, Swarovski):

Perfection with these skinny heels ($90, TopShop) and this knotted leather clutch ($695, MyTheresa):

I might add this eye-catching cuff (KJL, $207, Max and Chloe):

And, though I’ve been prominently featuring silver, consider this peplum top in a soft gold hue (Mulberry, $600, Net-A-Porter) with white skinnies, lucite drops ($275, Alexis Bittar), and studded bow sandals (Valentino, $295, Net-A-Porter):

I’d round it all out with this absolutely precious woven bow-topped clutch ($180, Ted Baker):

Finally, a few star separates: a funky silver ball necklace ($48, Debenham’s), a lavender metallic satchel ($218, ASOS), and some lovely silver sandals (Zanotti, $595, Intermix):

Anyone else into this look!?

Free Bird

In Accessories, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Sundresses on April 24, 2012 at 2:18 pm

Though I lean towards tailored classics  in bold colors and lean shapes, I have a secret love affair with the upscale Coachella boho-chic look.  I’m not talking Tevas and crochet.  I’m talking loose-fitting voile dresses with embroidery, like this gorgeous little number ($294, MyWardrobe):

I’d finish with these chunky patterned heels (loves — Theodora and Callum, $355, ShoptheShoeBox) and this woven clutch ($128, J. Crew):

I like it with these funky, brightly-colored drops ($48, Max and Chloe):

And — why not?! — some friendship bracelets for your very own army party ($6.95 each, ShopKitson):

Alternately, consider this easy-fitting navy dress ($275, Epaulet Shop) with a cool-gal feather statement necklace ($388, Auden Design):

Finish with these eye-catching wedges ($595, Scoop NYC):

Perfection with this rocker-gal chic Balenciaga bag (LOVES.  I swear Kourtney Kardashian owns it in every color — $1,445, Barney’s):

Or, how about this drapey top (Rebecca Taylor, $355, Dealuxe) with a bold necklace (Suzanna Dai, $395, Charm and Chain), skinny jeans, and some printed platforms ($450, Shop the Shoe Box):

I’d finish it with this tasseled shoulder bag ($100, Mango)

Finally, dying/swooning over this breezy caftan-style dress (on sale for $299, Calypso) with a tribal-style necklace (Pamela Love’s stuff is all.the.rage — I know because I’ve seen Rachel Bilson wear it.  Duh.  — $1,250, Net-A-Porter):

I’d pair it with these cork wedges ($385, Scoop NYC) and this awesome printed clutch ($70, Cusp):

And scene.  Hope your week is fab to the max.  (?)  Personally, I can’t believe it’s only Tuesday.  Boo, hiss.  Miss ya, weekend.

Candy Striper

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Jewelry, Nautical, Pop of Red, Shoes, Sundresses, The Honeymoon Trousseau, White on April 23, 2012 at 1:43 pm

This past weekend, I attended my 10-year high school reunion.  {That’s right, 10 years.  Let that sink in for a moment.  Terrifying.}  Now, I know that reunions can be a source of tremendous anxiety/social awkwardness/cattiness, and maybe I just attended the best high school ever and was graced with a particularly stellar group of classmates, but I had an awesome time AND found myself bowled over by how beautiful, accomplished, and well-dressed my classmates are.  Ahem, one of them is the Director of Economic Development in the Canary Islands.  Let’s pause and think about this.  Can you imagine not only living in the Canary Islands (she was deeply, richly, and oh-so-enviously tanned) but enjoying that kind of career success at the age of 27?!  Um, yeah.  I need to get my tuchus in gear.  Another classmate is the VP of Sales and Marketing at a start-up premium denim company, Lock Sicker — super cool product {only for Mr. Magpies at the moment}, and she spoke with such grace and intelligence about the brand and its identity that I was pretty much reaching for my credit card and Mr. Magpie’s measurements by the evening’s end.  Yet another classmate {and dear friend} is a local news anchor here in D.C., and I won’t be surprised if suddenly I flip on the TV and see her delivering the national news on CBS.  I could go on and on, but I realize this sort of braggery (new word?) gets old quickly, so I’ll just conclude by saying that I encourage you to attend your high school/college reunions (with open eyes/hearts!) and that I want to visit the Canary Islands now.  It would be the perfect venue to debut some vacation-ready striped separates, which seem to have been finding their way to the top of my lust list over the past few weeks.  For example, I’ve been drooling over these Danish-made striped blankets (around $100, Kira-CPH), which would be PERFECT for beach-side lounging:

Or, consider pairing a striped tee (Chinti and Parker, $125, Net-A-Porter — PSST, also available in dress form here for $160) with some punchy shorts ($45, J. Crew) and that Holst + Lee necklace ($535, Latitude) I’ve been droning on about:

This is the kind of look you sport with bare feet and loose, beachy hair.  Oh so fresh, oh so summery.   Love that deep, near-cobalt blue color — hence my obsession with these coordinating separates: the perfect beach bag (Stella McCartney, $448, Farfetch), a GLAM sloafer (imagine wearing these puppies with an all-white outfit or with simple jeans and a white tee for maximum effect — AND YES, it’s a kid’s size, but the size 5 runs large! — $40, Zara):

Alternately, this happy-stripe sweater (Trina Turk, $178, Nordstrom) pairs perfectly with a statement necklace ($345, Ben Amun), white skinnies, and some simple flips ($48, Shopbop):

Perfect with this croc-effect cross-body ($320, StyleTryst):

Or, test out this cheery striped skirt (Marc Jacobs, $285, Stylebop — or, get the look for much less with this $48 BB Dakota skirt) with a simple white top (I’m drawn to this Mandarin-style — $345, La Garconne) and some mah-jor bling ($98, Lydell NYC):

I’d die wearing the above with these punchy pumps (what a delicious color — Louboutin, $645, Net-A-Porter) and this classic Bottega Veneta woven clutcheroo ($497, Farfetch):

And by the way — if you, like me, can’t get enough of that juicy tangerine color, check out this TDF little blouse ($98, J. Crew), some crisp white shorts ($45, J. Crew), and a pair of bold earrings ($95, Max and Chloe):

I kind of like it with some serious statement heels (Carven, $720, Ssense):

Or, let LemLem do the work for you — slip into this breezy caftan ($225, Lem Lem):

Lovely with a hot pink bikini ($195, Net-A-Porter):

Don’t forget the GLAM sandals (K. Jacques, $240, Net-A-Porter)

Other top picks?  This comfy neon-trimmed striped tee ($142, Steven Alan) –

Pretty much perfect with white shorts and these bold tootsies ($195, Calypso) and this clutch (Rebecca Minkoff, $195, Nordstrom):

OH.LA.LA.

I’m a Barbie Girl

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Bombshell, Brights!, Jewelry, Pastels, Shoes on April 19, 2012 at 9:56 am

No but really.  I am a Barbie girl.  Did I ever tell you about the “Barbie room” my sisters and I had in our basement growing up?  Between the four of us, we had two Barbie houses (mine was…unbelievable.  I mean.  It was tall and pink with white window boxes and a front porch, and it was the most beautiful piece of real estate I’ll ever own), 3 Barbie cars (one of which was legitimately a pink R.V. that we thought was very classy.  How kitsch of Barbie.), and about 70 Barbies and Kens.  Playing “Barbs” (we were into abbrevs at a young age) on Saturday mornings was no amateur affair for my sisters and I.  It began with a Democratic “picking of the Barbs” event where we would pile all eligible Barbies (excluding, of course, the rejects with “popped off heads,” hair “trims” — aka, botched hair jobs courtesy of yours truly — and missing body parts) in the center of the room and “with our eyes closed” take turns picking our Barbie family members.  In retrospect, this was a rather impressively egalitarian  and progressive approach to drafting our families, though I assure you that “nepotism” by virtue of feigning eye closure and/or groping around for the right Barbie build was an unfortunately routine practice.  (I’m not pointing fingers, but my next youngest sister did happen to “randomly pull” the same Ken doll as her man of the house with alarming regularity.  It was OK, though.  I much preferred the tall drink of water we dubbed “Dave” to her long-haired, hippie-looking “Taylor” Ken doll.  Note: Dave was a “shavable Ken.”  If you ran hot water on his face, his beard would disappear.  He came with some lovely accessories, including mini razors and an Old Spice bottle.  I also accidentally left him propped against the radiator in our bedroom and his arm melted a little bit, which only made him the more endearing to me; I believe I pitched this mild deformity as a “childhood accident” involving an elaborate act of heroism on his part.  But I digress.)  Once the Barbie lottery was complete, we set about designing our homes and building our little Barbie village.  We had long, elaborate plots which often involved marriages, career changes, births, social events, and, occasionally, deaths.  Yes, deaths.  Things got real in our Barbie world.  The most glaring example has to be our elaborate, 3-day recreation of one of the “Little House on the Prairie” stories, over the course of which one of our Kens “fell off the wagon” (an upturned container store bin with toy horses attached to the front via string and Scotch tape), was attacked by wolves, and died.  We had a moving burial service for him during which my next youngest sister brought a tear to all of our eyes with her poignant rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

Reliving these memories makes me laugh and also sort of want to cry at the same time.  What a beautiful time in our lives — that unbridled creativity, those hours spent laughing and bonding together in our footed pajamas and bowl cuts.  It’s no surprise, in a sense, that I wound up so fascinated by clothing and its utility as a tool for reinvention and reimagining.  This post, then, is a tribute to Barbie, my first true fashion love.  I’ll be featuring items that just feel like Barb herself.

First up: two pitch-perfect accessories in delicious Barbie pink: the ultimate handbag ($1,450, Miu Miu) and some ridiculously adorable pastel gingham flats ($40, ASOS):

Or, pair these semi-fierce drops ($328, Auden Designs) in just the right color palette –

– with a perfect pink blouse (DVF, $265, Net-A-Porter), a white eyelet skirt (Marc Jacobs, $350, Stylebop), and an edge-adding McQueen scarf ($445, Net-A-Porter) for a polished look:

Finish with perfect peeptoe heels (Jimmy Choo, $695, MyTheresa):

Plus, every Barbie girl needs a pink phone.  Isn’t this iPhone attachment ($29, Nordstrom) beyond adorable?!

Don’t forget the pitch-perfect manicure (Deborah Lippmann’s “Pretty Young Thing” and “Daytripper” — $16, Barney’s):

I’m also digging the unique shape of this Cacharel number ($354, Farfetch), paired with this fun Fiona Paxton statement necklace ($345, ShopKitson):

Though I can’t imagine Barb in flat sandals, I’d tone done the frou-frou with these simple yet glam flats (Rachel Zoe, $235, Nordstrom):

Finally, a GLAM SLAM bag (so darling! — Valentino, $1,195, Shirise):

Or, if you really want to go Barb Doll-chic, check out this bananas statement piece skirt (Preen, $2,335, Net-A-Porter), which I’d tone down just a touch with a white shell (Marc Jacobs, $228, Shopbop — or get the look for less with this $49 BB Dakota top) and these dressed-up enormastuds ($395, Asha):

In real life, I would tone the look down with some neutral pumps in a camel or blush tone, but since we’re going full-on Barbaholic, let’s finish with these hot pink Louboutins ($895, Net-A-Porter), this dazzling Chanel crossbody ($4,812, Matches), and these phenom retro-styled shades ($230, Rebecca Minkoff):

Or, swap out some of the pricey additions mentioned above for this affordable but fun statement piece ($52, Lydell), a stark white cross-body at a more affordable price (Rebecca Minkoff, $250, Zappos — also comes in dazzling neon yellow and hot pink!)

For rainy days, I’m loving this whimsical umbrella (Felix Rey, $65, Bloomingdale’s) paired with — sigh — Hunter boots (yes, there is a time and place for everything…generally, I’m so bored of Hunter boots and their overpopulation on the streets of D.C. — $125, PinkMascara):

Perfection with this TDF colorblocked trench ($1,067, Farfetch):

Swoonskis.

And now — drumroll please — the winner of the Laura James Jewelry giveaway is: SHANA!  Shana, I’ll be in touch to get your gift card over to you!

Blue Crush

In Accessories, Americana, Brights!, Florals, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on April 18, 2012 at 9:19 am

No, this is not a surf-related post. When I see Elle and Vogue run “surfer-inspired” or “scuba-inspired” looks, I want to barf.  There is just no way you will con me into sporting anything that looks like diving gear in real life.  And scene.  The inspiration for this post instead stems from lovely chinoiserie and ginger jars, which seem to be cropping up all over the place on Pinterest.

And PSST — you can get your own styles from C. Wonder and Emilia Ceramics!

This DVF wrap dress ($345, Net-A-Porter) is therefore right up my alley.  I’d pair it with this beautiful azalea necklace from J. Crizzle ($150, J. Crew):

I would pair it with these stunning denim platforms (Rupert Sanderson, $590, Ssense):

Finish with a boxy white purse (Milly, $395, PiperLime):

The perfect little accessory?  This fun little chinoiserie iPhone cover ($39, Zazzle):

Or — how much do you die over this asymmetrical blouson-style maxi (on sale for $237, Rebecca Taylor)?!  I’d pair it with a blue statement necklace ($363, Charm and Chain):

LOVE!  Finish with some glam slam sandals ($170, Shopbop) and this TDF clutch ($395, Kotur):

I might finish with this ultra-covetable YSL ring (available through e-consignment shop Style Sequel, which one of my lovely readers owns! — bid now before it escapes!)

For something in a brighter color palette, consider this amazing turquoise dress ($295, Built By Wendy):

Would look unbelievably eye-catching with this statement necklace (what a find! — $42, Lydell) and these stunning Rupert Sanderson wedges ($875, MyTheresa):

At the risk of being a little matchy-matchy, consider this roomy tote ($825, Boyy):

I might finish with some of these chunky bangles by Flutter NYC ($185 and $190, Flutter NYC):

I’m also loving this chic little collar necklace (interesting fabrication — $48, ShopKitson) with a simple kimono-sleeve dress ($145, We Like Fashion).

I’d finish with a funky pair of printed flats ($135, J. Crew)

Finish with a pop of yellow in the form of this darling Reed Krakoff crossbody ($590, MyTheresa — alternately, this $198 Vince Camuto variation might be up your alley/more friendly to your wallet):

Or, how about this darling and versatile lace shift (Tibi, $365, PiperLime) with a piece from my new favorite jewelry designer, Holst + Lee ($535, Latitude)?

Kind of amazing with these chinoiserie-inspired tootsies ($885, Net-A-Porter):

For just a pop, consider this carry-all from DVF ($98, Cusp) — perfect for the gym or beach — or these unbelievable Prada tootsies ($445, Bluefly).  I’m not normally one for kitten heels, but how darling would these look with some skinnies and an oversized white blouse?

Or, the contrary — go whole hog with this darling shift ($98, Dalaga)!

AND NOW — the moment you all have been waiting for: the winner of the two JLW Shop Around cards go to Mimi and Daphne!  I’ll be in touch so we can make sure to get these cards into your hands by the weekend!  If you did not win but are local to the D.C. area and want to participate in the program, please buy a ticket here.  Thanks to Courtney and the ladies of the Junior League for their generosity!

Honeymooning Around

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Jewelry, Romantic, Shoes, Sundresses, The Honeymoon Trousseau on April 17, 2012 at 9:15 am

Important preface: be sure to scroll to the bottom of this post for TWO exciting giveaways!  EEE!

Also, I may have bragged last week about an upcoming tripski to Turnberry Isle, which has obviously sent me into a full-on shopaholic frenzy of wardrobe-planning activity just shy in its level of intensity to the pre-honeymoon “situation” I succumbed to nearly two years ago.  {Imagine the Tazmanian Devil ripping through your local Neiman Marcus.  That was me.}  Based on a few telling emails from my lovely bride-to-be readers, I am not alone in this — many of you are trolling your local storefronts designing the ultimate honeymoon trousseau, and I think it’s about time t0 compare notes.  I’m debuting a new packing strategy for this upcoming trip, which I must attribute to my uber-coordinated madre: I’m trying to pick a bunch of separates in coordinating colors so I can mix and match.  The color for this trip will be: HOT PINK.  {Turnberry is, after all, just outside of Miami.}  The plan is to mix it in with separates in different bold hues — but everything MUST play well with hot pink.  So, for the trip down, my thought is: an eyelet/lace top ($110, Net-A-Porter) with white skinnies (many of you swear by Hudson Jeans for your white jeans, but I’m still a J. Brand gal, through and through), a neon-accented necklace (I just snapped this style up, and am itching for it to arrive — $42, LeifShop), and some bold sandals ($125, Shopbop):

Lovely with a simple cross-body purse {for essentials like phone, boarding pass, and ID — $148, Ann Taylor):

Because I always get cold on flights {and the above look is a little loud for pre-Miami arrival}, I’d slip into a navy blazer ($198, J. Crew) and pack a scarf/pashmina ($195, Virgina Johnson):

Finally, layer on some of these fun nautical style bracelets from Maine-based jewelry line Ropes ($52, Snappy Turtle — also available here):

Upon arrival, I would swap out for an airy, punchy caftan ($375, Sheridan French) accented by a turquoise pendant necklace ($225, Max and Chloe)

I’d finish with a simple jute tote (Rebecca Minkoff, $195, Endless):

– and some fab jute wedges (DVF, $278, Shopbop):

For beach-side/pool-side lounging, I might pair this straw hat ($96, Hat Attack) with this unbelievable affordable find ($29, Old Navy)

I was torn between the Old Navy style above and this $158 Splendid variation, but in the end, went with the budget-friendly version!  I might accent with these fun little drops ($22, Color Block Shop) and this fun cuff ($325, ShopKitson) to transition from the pool to lunch/dinner/cocktails:

Or keep the add-ons to a minimum and instead pair with this Celine-look-alike tote ($99!!!!!, ModCloth):

Meanwhile, this hot pink tote ($214, Matches) is a must-have, and would go equally well with this darling little tunic ($215, Virginia Johnson):

Finish with this fun pendant necklace ($74, BaubleBar):

Or, how about for a date night out, this silky little dream (on sale for $118, Rebecca Taylor) with some orange drops ($34, BaubleBar):

Fun with these color-blocked wedges ($385, MyMu) and this punchy clutch (WOW, color — around $500, Anya Hindmarch):

Finally, if you’re still looking for some easy daywear, check out the punchy pareos from Antik Batik (aorund $180, Antik Batik); the fun collection from Seaton Surf, including this punchy cover-up ($198, Seaton Surf); and the neon flips from Tkees ($48, Shopbop):

I can almost taste the daiquiris now…and PSST.  If you’re still not satisfied/need more inspiration for your honeymoon trousseau, check out the Mara Hoffman collection for more day-glo, honeymoon-ready picks.  OLE!

The Work It Circuit

In Accessories, Brights!, Dream Wear, Jewelry, Neutrals, Shoes, The Little Lady, Work Wear on April 16, 2012 at 11:21 am

I know that I’ve been a bad bloggerina when Mr. Magpie emails me and asks: “Where is Mrs. Magpie?  We miss her blog.”  Pout.  I was in Boston the majority of last week, where I was attending a work conference, getting lots done, networking my little tuchus off, and every now and then, wondering why there were so many ill-fitting suits amongst fellow conference attendees.  Ahem.  I get the fact that we need to look professional and presentable, but why does that need to be boring?  I’ve been wearing my favorite work-appropriate Milly and Diane Von Furstenberg numbers with heels that are admittedly a touch on the high side for this staid audience, and have actually enjoyed getting dressed every morning…I hate to be snarky.  And I know that fashion is not a high priority for lots of successful business women, nor need it be.  I get that sometimes a loud outfit can distract or confuse, and that in certain cases, you want to telegraph a certain amount of seriousness via your carriage and the outfit you don.  But what a drab melange of browns and grays, gag-worthy 1.5″ chunky heels, and awkward laptop bags.  Yuck central.  I’d strongly suggest a trim dress along the lines of this DVF wonder (perfect, season-less investment piece! — $400, Net-A-Porter) with some classic pearl enorma-studs (KJL, $51, Thomas Laine):

I like this with pearls — but try something with a little edge, like this neon citrine yellow-accented pearl tassel necklace ($195, Rebecca Taylor) and this chartreuse-and-camel purse ($240, Beckley Boutique):

Finish with these on-point heels ($198, BCBG):

Keeping in the same, au-courant color palette of chartreuse and nude/neutral, consider this statement blouse (Gucci, $690, Net-A-Porter) with a simple, versatile camel pencil skirt (Max Mara, $237, Matches) and some drops ($68, Nordstrom):

Finish with a  structured tote (this goes perfectly! — Reed Krakoff, $1,090, Nordstrom) and these statement-making Carven heels ($665, Net-A-Porter):

If I had unlimited funds, I would just go for it.  Look polished and presentable but also dress like you know what you’re doing.  If we’re really talking dreams, can you imagine this bananas pink boxy top ($580, Net-A-Porter) with some fit and flare white trousers ($255, Barney’s — and PSST, these trousers are from Derek Lam’s spinoff line, 10 Crosby, which is overall lovable) and a Suzannai Dai stunner ($365, Suzanna Dai)?!

A pointy toed pump is the perfect accent-piece in any neutral shade — blush pink, dove gray, etc.   {This Kate Spade pair is perfect.} But if we’re really talking big dreams, I gotta have the Valentino rockstuds ($919, MyTheresa) and this simple, structured Victoria Beckham tote (no idea why the price is so ridonculous, but from a purely aesthetic standpoint, it is a lovely bag — $2,700, Net-A-Porter):

Or — loving the idea of a nude blouse ($260, Net-A-Porter) beneath a crisp white blazer (Rag + Bone, $535, Barney’s) and some shocking pink tailored pants (DVF, $285, Shopbop):

I’d finish with these TDF Louboutins (on super sale for around $400, Ekseption) and a crisp white carry-all ($575, Barney’s):

Alternately, take things to a nautical place with some fun flower earrings (Kate Spade, $58, Nordstrom), this amazing necklace ($395, Ben-Amun), this silken dream (on sale for $225, Rebecca Taylor):

I’d finish with some statement heels (O.M.G. — Charlotte Olympia, $875, Net-A-Porter) and this printed tote (Pierre Hardy, $850, Net-A-Porter — very Goyard-like!):

If you’re looking for some investment accessories that can add interest and polish to your work wardrobe, consider these to-die-for vintage Chanel drops ($598, Farfetch), which go with an.y.thing or these open-woven flats (Marc Jacobs, $392, Forzieri):

BEST.WEEK.EVER.

a)  My baby sister is ENGAGED!  EEEE!!!  I’m dying with excitement.

b)  I finally bucked up (bucked down?) and bought the Alexander Wang bag I’ve been whining about for about a century.  It brought a tear of joy to my eye when it arrived.  It is beautiful and so grown-up and everything I wanted it to be and more and…it’s mine!  {Fist pump.}

c)  Mr. Magpie caught me off guard by announcing that he is taking me away to Turnberry Isle for a romantic getaway weekend in just a few short weeks!!!  I’m pretty much doing back flips with glee and excitement, but also keenly aware of the fact that I need to do something serious about my winter-induced pallor.  My legs are translucent.  {He’s also signed us up for a round of golf, which should be laughable on my score.}

d)  My other baby sister got earned {she’s so qualified, it’s no joke} a fashion design job for an AMAZING, high-end fashion line.  I don’t know if I can mention which it is until she’s actually started, so…let’s just say I look forward to being well-outfitted thanks to her, and the steep discount I hope she’ll pass along my way.

e)  It’s almost Easter, which means I can almost eat my favorite sweet indulgent in the universe: Haribo gummies.  Yes ma’am.  Don’t even think that I won’t be rising with the sun to tear into a bag of gummy bears.

I’m sorry for being a braggart, but I am literally bursting with joy.  Life is too good.  And here are some things that are making my life even sunnier and brighter:

1.  The Perfect Vacation Sandal

I’m sorry to do this, but indulge me: I have freakishly small feet, and I can squeeze into these kids’ sandals ($49, Zara) in a size 5.  Are they not the most adorable pair of shoes you ever saw?  Imagine it with a hot pink pedi.  Score.  You can get a similar look in a regular, non-pixie adult size here or here.

2.  Bright Tote

I saw this reversible leather tote (white on one side, citrine on the other), and fell head over heels in love.  Such a fun color for right.now, and, when you’re sick of it, just turn it inside out for basic white ($399, Scoop):

3.  Chunky Necklaces

I saw a very chic lady snag an oversized chain-link necklace at a cute new boutique in North Georgetown last week called Dalton Pratt and have been on the hunt for something comparable since.  These colorful statement pieces ($26, BaubleBar) fit the bill nicely.

4.  Ikat Maxi

Holy moly — is this skirt ($325, Calypso) a vacation dream or what?!  I’ve been a bit tentative with the maxi skirt trend — I snagged one hot pink maxi at a ridiculous deal and it worked really well with a simple white tee and ginormous statement necklace, but…not until I saw this did I consider adding to the collection.  Can you imagine how chic you’d be styling it with a simple white tank and an oversized turquoise necklace?!

Perfect for a dinner out with Mr. Magpie while at Turnberry…!

5.  Speaking of Ikat…

These funky ikat print pillows from Amber Interiors ($60 each) caught my eye as a funky way to spruce up a couch.

6.  Updated Bath Mat

OK, this is sort of minor and specific, but how precious are these reversible chevron bath mats ($38, Garnet Hill)?!  Just the thing to “juge” up a boring bathroom…

7.  White Out

I have a vision of myself prancing around Turnberry in a white get-up with perfectly bronzed shoulders and beachy hair.  Ha.  To achieve the look, consider this ridiculously affordable maxi ($19, Target)

Perfect with these studded flats ($295, Net-A-Porter — OR, for something cheaper, check these puppies out):

I’d finish with pops of turquoise in the form of these seahorse earrings ($38, Lilly Pulitzer) and this coral necklace ($32, J. Crew):

I’d perhaps store my shades in this darling pouch ($75, Rebecca Minkoff):

8.  Neutrogena Makeup Remover Towelettes

I realize this is neither high-fashion nor particularly interesting, but Neutrogena Makeup Remover towelettes ($7.95, Drugstore) make my life.  For those evenings where you’re just too tired to wash your face…they do the trick nicely.

9.  Retro Shades

Ugh, these lucite frame shades (Acne, $350, Saks) are just too cool for school.  They have just the right amount of frame.

10.  Fun Cutlery

How amazing is this neon cutlery set ($38, Site NYC)?!  LOVE the idea of packing this for a picnic or sprucing up a traditional tabletop with these as accents.  Cute.

Have a lovely weekend!

Spring Has Sprung

In Accessories, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Pastels, White on April 2, 2012 at 9:59 am

Easter is just around the corner, meaning it’s just about time to roll out the pastel sundress parade, begin my sunless tanning regime, and prepare for the sugar fest that will be Sunday morning.  {I gave up sweets for Lent, and it’s been a long, sugarless string of weeks.  I have a bag full of Haribos waiting for me, and I can barely contain my excitement.} I’m pretty much thrilled.  Some top picks for peppy spring gear?  First: this darling affordable zig-zag shift (so Missoni-esque! — $52, Spool72) with some funky enorma-studs ($65, J. Crew):

I’d finish with these bomb.com laser-cut wedges (Chloe, $595, Net-A-Porter) and a straw clutchski (Tory Burch, $275, Saks):

Or, how about this lovely (very Betty Draper) shirt-dress ($80, TopShop) with big enorma-studs ($74, Oliphant):

Gorgeous with these wowza Lanvin heels ($1,150, The Webster Miami):

I’d finish with this picture-perfect DVF clutch in either the green or pink ($395, Shopbop):

Or, how about this robin’s egg blue dress (love that sweet little collar — $440, La Garconne) with a gemmed collar necklace ($475, Jennifer Miller):

With a neckline that prim, you gotta bring it with the heels — choose something slightly fierce, like these platformed sandals ($74, Heels):

Round it all out with a structured, lady-like tote ($729, Aspinal):

Want more of that dreamy sky blue color?  Check out these perfect pointy-toed flats ($29, Zara)

Lovely paired with these aqua drops ($34, Bauble Bar), or maybe as a triple threat with this easy breeze linen dress ($225, Calypso):

And finally, how about this breezy spring look?  A mint green vintage-style necklace ($362, Laura James), a gauzy white top ($295, Calypso), some colored skinnies (I’ve been hearing rave reviews about these AG “stilt” skinnies — $159, Shopbop — although I’ve also been keenly interested in checking out the DL1961 line.  One of my lovely Magpie readers owns a clothing boutique in VA and says that they are just flying off the shelves), and some funky white sandals (Red Valentino, $295, Net-A-Porter):

Finish it off with this darling mint-and-camel crossbody ($59, Nine West):

YAY for spring!  And, finally, a nice little gift for you this happy April morning: the design genius behind Paper Pastries, a darling paper goods/stationery e-boutique, has offered all of your lovely little Magpies 15% off your order between now and April 14th.  Just enter code “fashionmagpie” at check out.  Happy shopping!
