Dust on the Bottle

In Accessories, Florals, Jewelry, Neutrals, Romantic, Shoes, White on February 28, 2012 at 1:10 pm

The title of this post has nothing to do with anything except for the fact that I’m inspired by dusty rose colors today, and the word “dust” reminds me of one of my favorite country songs, David Lee Murphy’s “Dust on the Bottle.”  A loose association at best, I’ll admit, but it does highlight a) the cloudiness I’m feeling this early morning {please excuse the absence of a post yesterday; Scarlet took a tumble on Friday night…meaning this little Magpie, teetering in inappropriately high heels — these, to be exact, in a beautiful nude suede — tumbled down the stairs and hurt her footski and then spent the rest of the weekend doing nothing but watching Downton Abbey and letting Mr. Magpie wait on my hand and foot…} and b) the acute nostalgia I’ve been experiencing for my good old undergrad days at UVA, when I used to attend a yearly date function called “Bonfire” that involved kegs, live country music, a dark barn-like structure, and, yes, bonfires for roasting marshmallows.  “Dust on the Bottle” was featured heavily in the musical line-up.  So.amazing.  But I digress.

So dust.  This color profile should come as no surprise thanks to the lovely pastels that have been flooding the market and my personal wish list for the past few months.  I’d begin with this color-blocked top (BAM, too hot trends in one — $365, StyleBop), worn with a chunky bead necklace ($223, Wendy Mink), white skinnies and these to die for t-straps (loving that gold bar in the middle — and check out all of the amazing colors it comes in! — $68, Endless):

I’d pair the look with this sweet bow clutch ($52, Deux Lux)

The bag would look equi-awesome with this Maison Martin Margiela booties ($835, Shopbop).  I know,  I know — hello impracticality.  But…they’re lilac booties!  And they are outrageously amazing!

I’d wear them with a printed top (ugh, this Erdem style is to die — $800, Net-A-Porter), a tangled gold necklace (only $15, H&M), and white skinnies:

I’d finish with a lilac clutch ($22, ASOS) and maybe these ladylike earrings ($30, ModCloth):

Or, mix in the muted blush/rose color with the neon trend by pairing this silky tee ($126, Secret Squirrel) with a beaded necklace ($128, PiperLime) and hot pink skinnies ($176, Revolve) and some white rattan flats (Bloch, $120, Net-A-Porter):

Finish with this dreamy acquisition ($505, Matches):

Or, get just a little pop of the dusty/pastel in the form of these ah-may-zing Missoni flats ($495, Intermix), a gauzy scarf ($135, Chan Luu) or a watercolor clutch ($169, Molten Store):

Or, what about this lovely dusty rose colored Rochas wonder ($1,100, Farfetch), with soft aqua contrast coloring:

And, if you still haven’t gotten enough, let this Tucker maxi dress do all of the hard work for you.  Do you die?!

The Weekly Mash Up

In Accessories, Brights! on February 24, 2012 at 10:05 am

This has become something of a tradish here at TFM — my end-of-week lusts-of-the-moment, none of which  conform to any overarching theme or trend.  Just — things that strike my fancy at the moment.

First up: rad neon sandals at an unexpectedly affordable price ($125, Rebecca Minkoff).  I want them in the bright yellow.  Oh, fine.  I’ll take them in both colors.  Ideal with white skinnies or a breezy voile dress.

I’m always on the hunt for bargain buys that can put a little pep in my step.  These raglan tees have the PERFECT color combos, an ideal stripe width, and would look ah-may-zing beneath a structured blazer.  The best part?  They’re on sale for $15.  Buy here.

My toiletry kits have seen better days — they’re looking a bit worse for the wear, so I’m on the hunt for a new set.  I’m loving these monogrammed styles ($128 each, Monogram Goods):

I’ve been on the prowl for a long, long time for just the right iPhone cover {there are way, way too many options…and I just can’t commit}, and I think I’ve finally found one I love enough to purchase.  Isn’t this floral print cover beautiful ($35, Society 6)?!

Love the combination of soft mauve and delicate gold bows.  The design of this trio of goodies is just too good to resist (earrings — $30, ModCloth; hair comb — $130, Suzannah; Annick Goutal perfume — $120, Bergdorf Goodman):

High-end pajamas feel like an outrageous extravagance — I’m usually found in ratty old tees borrowed from Mr. Magpie and well-worn boxers or boyshorts.  However.  How posh would you feel in this darling hot pink cotton set ($200, Journelle)?!

Ideal with the Missoni for Target throw (tons are still available on eBay! — see here!):

UM, this clutch ($24) is amazing.  That is all.

Love the sorbet hues of these beaded necklaces ($31 each, Vamoose).  I’d like one in each color.  Thanks.

If I bought every patterned tray featured on this blog, my home would be pretty much carpeted in trays.   I don’t know what it is about them — just love the idea of a pretty display.  And this Matisse-inspired style by linen design genius D. Porthault is a must ($175, Sue Fisher King).  Wouldn’t the beads above look lovely set-up atop?

I love a patterned scarf.  I throw mine around my neck to juge up a simple tunic and leggings or to distract fellow gym-goers from my sweaty face post-work-out.  They are a mah-jor magpie must.  These ikat styles from Sir Alistair Rai ($85, PiperLime) are right up my alley.

OK, my love bugs…have a happy weekend!

Denimography

In Accessories, Americana, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes on February 23, 2012 at 1:06 pm

Fun fact: neither my mother nor my father own a pair of jeans.  It honestly boggles my brain to envision either of them duding around in denim — they’re both far too formal.  I, on the other hand, live and breathe in jeans.  Quite the jean-eration gap.  HAHAHA.  Dumb.

Anyway, all bad puns aside, today, I thought it appropriate to finally pay homage to the fabric of my life.  Though I clearly am a skinny jean kinda gal, I’ve slowly been enticed by some of the boot cuts and wider leg styles coming back en vogue.  Check out these trouser-style jeans (Tibi, $285, Net-A-Porter).  Perfect with an airy voile top with something of a hippie vibe ($225, Calypso) and some big studs (Kenneth Jay Lane, $75, Net-A-Porter):

Finish with some brown leather wedges ($89, Zara):

– as well as a stack of patterned bangles ($21, ASOS) and the PS1 pochette in poppy python ($1,735, Proenza Schouler):

On the weekends, I’m all about chambray button-downs and tunics, like this style ($59, J. Crew), which I’d pair with leggings, a gauzy scarf (DVF, $250, Shopbop), and some mocs (I’m not sure the pricing on these puppies, but I just discovered them via Dee Keller!)

I’d finish with an easy carry-all (this clean white style startled me with its design — loves — $386, See Vivier):

Oh, and these rad frames from Elizabeth and James ($185 — a Shopbop exclusive!)

Alternately, go with the tangerine tango color by sporting this unbelievable open-weave lace top (Sass & Bide, $840, Net-A-Porter), enorma-studs ($770, Sue Fisher King), white skinnies, and these bad.ass. denim wedges (Chloe, $895, Net-A-Porter)

Kind of bomb with these bold, patterned clutcheroo ($235, Not Just a Label):

Or, how about this checked blouse ($140, Aubin and Wills) with a collarless boucle jacket (Zac Posen, on sale for $712, The Outnet — or get the look for less with this $89 Zara style), a tangly pearl necklace ($195, Juliet and Company), skinnies, and some spiffy flats (Kate Spade, $225, Bloomingdales):

I’d finish with a contrasting-colored cross-body ($238, J. Crew):

Finally, a few separates to put a little pep in your step — first, a denim blazer (I wear mine all.the.time, though mine cost only $29 at H&M! — ACNE, $530, Net-A-Porter):

And PSST.  If the blazer ain’t yo thang, check out this affordable ($74!) anorak variation!  Other possibilities?  An inexpensive denim clutch (love the fiery red zipper — $27, Motel Rocks) or a frilly denim top ($214, Farfetch) –

– either of which would look unbelievable with these blush-and-tangerine wedges ($99, Zara):

Ahhh, denim.  Endlessly versatile and fresh-looking.  I’m loving it in the mid-blue color at the moment…

And now, the real reason why you’re reading today’s post: the WINNER of the fab Stella + Dot giveaway from the lovely Dawn Biddlecomb!  The winner is: AMANDA!  All I have to say is: “Hey, purple.”  Haha.  Seriously loved the hilarious and at times painful/awkward responses this post received.  Thanks for sharing.  Amanda, drop me a line so we can ship you your AH-MAY-ZING necklace!

Living in Color

In Accessories, Florals, Home Decor, Ikat, Magpie Nest, Pop of Red, White on February 22, 2012 at 2:12 pm

I’ve been on such a wild art-collecting rampage for the past few weeks that I’ve kinda neglected everything but my walls in terms of updating and outfitting my little Magpie Nest.  This is in part because Mr. Magpie and I have been talking/planning for some time to move elsewhere, and it seems semi-wasteful to buy new items when we aren’t even sure of the dimensions or style of our soon-to-be new digs.  That being said, I have my eye on about 3234 items I will readily snatch up the minute Mr. Magpie and I make our move, and all of them are in keeping with the BRIGHTS trend all over the runway.  First up, I kind of just need this set of shot glasses ($29, Burke Decor) to spruce up my shelf space.  How darling would they be situated on display in a glass cabinet?!

Serve them atop a chevron tray ($56, Pencil Shavings Studio):

Would look especially splashy paired with some ikat-print plates ($10, C. Wonder), some monogrammed napkins ($14o for set of 6, Monogram Goods), and some gold cutlery ($85 for five-piece setting, Shop Horne):

Perfect against the bold backdrop of this canvas/print ($39 and up depending on the size and framing choices you make! — Image Kind):

I’d mix the bright colors in with pristine glass.  I have managed to collect apothecary jars and cake domes in a variety of different shapes and sizes, and I love the idea of one day clustering them on a shelf or lining them up on a kitchen bar (minis — $38, Rain; cake dome — $205, Rain):

Next up: OMG, these armchairs ($279, Urban Outfitters).  I like the idea of adding one to an office space or bedroom as a fun little accent POP.

Perfect situated next to a mirrored side table ($599, Z Gallerie) topped with a lovely lamp ($298, Monogram Goods) and some darling poodle book-ends ($69, Lamps Plus):

Now, I’ve long lusted after a cowhide rug, and the muted hue of this style ($499, West Elm) is perfection:

Meanwhile, a mix of typed (“Blah” letterpress print — $15, Raw Art Letterpress), abstract (Ikat canvas — $66, Lulu and Drew) , and sketched art works (Jason Wu sketch — $20, Inslee By Design):

Kinda rad mixed in with this shabby chic elephant wall hook ($16.50, The Door Stop):

I die over the idea of this miscellany hanging behind the wall of my personal desk, which would be accompanied by a fab lucite chair ($175, Lexington Modern):

Imagine it situated behind an uber-sleek, modern desk from the likes of Pieces (yikes, price tag — $1,750, Pieces) and topped with an eye-catching lamp (fuschia-lined shade — $89, Shades of Light; base, $236, Shades of Light) and a stack of lovely books:

The desk would ideally be placed just on top of a bold Madeline Weinrib rug:

I’d most definitely need to find a place either on my desktop or bookshelves for these darling Foo dogs ($265, Chic Shop LA):

Oh yes indeedy.  Perfect with the whole room beneath this palm-leaf chandelier ($1,995, Pieces):

And it goes without saying that I would NEED a cozy armchair for reading ($1,295, ABC Home), juged up with pillows (LOVE this floral print — $60-$75, Caitlin Wilson) and accented with this darling navy ceramic jar ($185, Emilia Ceramics):

This navy printed throw ($333, Cococozy) is a bananas addition:

In the corner?  A bar cart ($295, Society Social), topped with retro-style glasses ($165 for 7, Chic Shop LA):

I’d be sure to set it up with some bold napkins (like the idea of mixing and matching colors here — $22, Burke) and a lovely little bowl for cocktail treats ($30, Tertullia)

– and I’d also need this dachshund tray ($168, Jonathan Adler) for additional goodies!

EEP.  So many other goodies I’d like to share, but I’ll start with that!  Remember to enter my giveaway {see the “Sportive” post for details} for THIS AMAZING NECKLACE! by midnight tonight!  A winner will be announced tomorrow.  Oh LA LA.

Sportive

In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Jewelry on February 20, 2012 at 10:08 am

When I lived in Lyon, France, I made a bee-line for the ridiculously overpriced and underwhelming “gym” (yes, that word should live in a serious set of air quotes, because it essentially consisted of a poorly ventilated room with a couple of old, rusty cardio machines adjacent to a dance studio with horrible overhead lighting and a noticeable B.O. problem) in an effort to stave off my homesickness…and any potential weight gain from the fantastic French fare.  Initially, I would slip into my gym gear at home and walk to the two blocks to the gym, but I resolved to pack my clothes after more than my fair share of eyebrow raised looks of confusion {based on the reception my get-up received, I would guess that wearing gym clothes outside of the home was tantamount to wearing your pajamas to Church or something, according to les lyonnais} and one particularly strange incident that I have puzzled over for years.  As I was walking down the street in my Nike spandex and windbreaker, a man leaned out of the window of his car and yelled, “Tu es sportive!”  He didn’t look particularly menacing or lewd; his delivery instead suggested that he was saying something along the lines of “Hey, you dropped your keys” or something of comparable neighborly kindness.  And “tu es sportive” translates to: “You look athletic”/”you are sporty.”  ?!  What was that?!  A cat-call?  Most random pick-up line ever — sorta like yelling, “You have red hair!” or “You’re wearing a green shirt!”  Strange.  Now Mr. Magpie and I will exchange faux “cat calls” along these lines every now and then — “you have really brown hair”; “you look sporty“; “you’re wearing running shoes!”  You know, things that sound like they might be compliments but actually achieve nothing.

All of this is a long wind-up to justify the title of this post, which came to mind after thinking about how much I’ve loved the slightly athletic/sport-inspired looks I’ve seen all over the runway.  I’m not into anything that’s literally akin to athletic gear {I don’t think I’ll ever get into the surfer girl styles — sorry, Proenza Schouler}, but certain color combinations (black and orangey-red) and smart cuts achieve the overall aesthetic.

For example, love this combo dress in the perfect racing colors (Sandro, $320, Net-A-Porter) alongside that fab J. Crew bubble necklace ($150, Net-A-Porter):

Ideal paired with these funky shoes (Vionnet, $925, The Corner):

And this perforated Givenchy tote ($1,445, Barney’s):

Or, how about this chevron-print button-front dress (Tucker, $380, Net-A-Porter), which lives in the same sporty color family, with a tasseled necklace (on sale for $319, Ten Over Six):

Oh-so-chic with some funky booties (Maison Martin Margiela, $895, Net-A-Porter):

Or, check out this perforated leather tote (affordable! — $89, Truvow):

Alternately, a boyfriend blazer ($78, Urban Outfitters) with a statement necklace ($88, Max & Chloe), black skinnies, some mah-jor boots ($605, Antik Batik):

Perfection with this geometric tote ($89, Rachel Roy):

Or, consider this silken muscle tee (3.1 Phillip Lim, $195, Otte) with a simple beaded necklace ($130, Ben-Amun) and black leather trim skirt (on sale for $180, Oxygene):

I’d wear it with this bucket bag (~$115, Mango) –

– and these ankle-strap heels ($120, Mango):

Or, a maxi dress (A.L.C., $795, Shopbop) with a lariat necklace ($88, Max and Chloe):

with some wedges (MyMu, on sale for $178, Les Nouvelles) and a tasseled clutchski ($128, Lulu Clutches):

And, in closing — a special treat for y’all: a giveaway for the most fab statement necklace…ever!  Get ready: Dawn Biddlecomb, an independent stylist for Stella & Dot, is treating one lucky reader to the Marrakesh Bib necklace seen below!  All you have to do is like Dawn on Facebook and leave a comment on this post telling me what the best or worst cat-call you’ve ever received is!  A winner will be announced this Thursday!

Woot woot!

This + That

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Brights!, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Magpie Nest, Pop of Red, Shoes on February 17, 2012 at 11:54 am

FRIDAY!!!!  I’m so happy to see you!  It’s already a great day because this fantastic old school jam by Color Me Badd aired on the radio early this a.m., much to my delight and glee.  Just the thing to greet the weekend.  As per usual, I’m far too excited to roll out a carefully organized post, so I’ll just pass along what’s been striking my fancy for the past week.

Did anyone else tune in to see the dog show earlier this week?  It only exacerbated my puppy fever.  I need a dog.  Now.  Mr. Magpie and I have long been debating between the Welsh Terrier and the French Bulldog, but my main objective at the moment is just to add a little four-legged pupperoo to our life, whichever breed he prefers.  This goal has, of course, sent me on a variety of imaginary shopping excursions for our little pup.  How darling are these dog beds ($59-$79 depending on size, Harry Barker)?!

Also, how cute are these personalized dog prints ($9, Fire Hydrant Press)?!  Is it too early to order one?!  (We already have the name picked out!)

Just when I thought Chloe’s Marcie couldn’t be any more covetable, they created a version in downtown-chic denim.  ACK.  I can’t decide which I love more — the crossbody ($525), the shoulder bag ($1,325), or the large satchel ($2,265).  So.so.amazing.

I’m attending two birthday affairs this weekend, and heading to Vegas in just two weeks for my bestie’s bachelorette.  Suffice to say, I’ve got celebration on the brain, and I need some killer kicks.  Loving (!) these polka dot mules from — who else?! — Kate Spade ($328, Jildor):

Yeah, neon is still rocking out in my world.  I’ve been sporting either shocking pink from Illamasqua ($14, Sephora) or poppy orange-red (Tom Ford, $30, Bergdorf’s):

I was up in NYC this past weekend for what might have been the most hilarious + fun weekend of my life.  I got to attend a fab blogger event hosted by Currently Obsessed, Shopbop, and ASOS at the Soho House in NY, explore Chelsea Market {which was hosting a pop-up “Swamp People” exhibit with REAL alligators!  Who would have thought I’d see an alligator in Manhattan?!}, hit up the Rubins art museum {fascinating, especially the murals on the 3rd floor}, eat lots.of.delicious.food {including at Spice Market — incredible!}, go wine tasting, people watch at the Standard Biergarten, and — sort of my favorite pitstop of the weekend — hit up the Rusty Knot for post-dinner drinks.  This place is kitschy.  Half of it sort of looks like a waiting room in a dentist’s office, with an awkward small-scale fish-tank and a strange lined-upalong-the-wall chair arrangement.  But the crowd was awesome and unpretentious, which was semi-refreshing after the “I’m very important and beautiful” vibe I witnessed at the Standard {can’t say it wasn’t a deserved ‘tude — there were lots of beautiful and important people there!}  At any rate, the Rusty Knot had the most INCREDIBLE frozen drink called — you guessed it — the Rusty Knot.  My cousin called them “frozen mojitos,” and that’s about accurate — I tasted mint, limes, and rum.  DELIGHTFUL.

{When I recreate them, I need to serve them in these cheeky plastic cups — $38 for sleeve of 25, Monogram Goods.}

Speaking of citrus, these 11×14 letterpress designs by Sycamore Street Press ($35 each) caught my eye.  I think they’d make a fun little installation on a white kitchen wall.

Love the retro appeal.  And how cool that they’re letterpressed?!

My bestie and I have weekly “sninner” + trashy tv + wine nights.  {Sninner = snack dinner, or lots of little appetizers instead of an actual meal.}  I try to switch things up when I’m hosting {for Italian — caprese salad, crusty bread, and Italian charcuterie; other times, it’s Greek — hummus and pita, spanokopita from Trader Joe’s, dried fruits, and olives; still other times, it’s Spanish — marcona almonds, manchego cheese, chorizo, etc.}  But the one staple?  Cheese.  I have to have it for our weekly sninner because Mr. Magpie is not a huge fan of the fromage.  {He had a rough experience with Mac & Cheese as a child, and has been leery of it every since.  Strange, in a sense, because he’s the ultimate adventurous eater otherwise.}  For this reason, I’ve had my eye on this brightly-colored cheese server kit from L’Aguiole ($32, Anthropologie)

I’ve also got my eye on these ceramic cheese markers ($35 for set, Rain Collection):

Alternately, for another serving option: I recently saw a cute presentation for a cheese board — serve it on a chalkboard — and have been contemplating doing something similar.  Buy one here or take on the DIY challenge with instructions here.

{images from Wit & Whistle}

There’s no legitimate explanation for needing or wanting this camera ($90, ModCloth), but it’s cool.  Enough said.

…and not just any jewelry.  I’m all about pops of sapphire blue, like these Bounkit drops ($395, Charm & Chain) and this gumball stone bracelet ($45, J. Crew) as well as citrine/neon yellow ($24 for necklace, ColorBlockShop):

Finally, I really must own this hot pink mini from Robert Rodriguez ($395, Shopbop).  It’s a done deal.

The color!  The scalloped hem!  I die.  (And PSST.  I know I feature a lot of Diane von Furstenberg already, but please take a minute to check out the amazing color palette she’s made available this season.  DIE.

HAPPY WEEKEND!

Minty Minx

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Shoes, Work Wear on February 15, 2012 at 4:11 pm

Not sure what the title above means, but let’s just say last night involved a lot of champagne and lobster, so I’m a little cloudy in this post-celebration, early-morning fog.

Mint has made itself right at home in the mainstream fashion color profile over the last couple of seasons, especially with 50s throwback and pastel trending so loudly on and off the runway.

Below, a few of my favorite minty fresh pieces.  First up: I mean, Chloe, get outta here with the perfect minimalism of this tote.  Too bad the price tag is maximalist ($2,650, Barney’s):

Instead, I’ll get the look with small, inexpensive add-ons, like this geometric necklace ($55, Hannah Zakari) –

Perfect with this mint green pair  of jeans (I’m all about colored denim at the moment — AG Jeans, $175, Calypso), a loose-weave sweater ($72, TopShop), and some mint-accented snakeskin flats ($36, TopShop):

Perfect with that J. Crew Biennial tote ($348, J. Crew):

Or, how much do you love a classic polka-dot dress ($225, Net-A-Porter):

Ideal with these MINT cap-toed heels (~$500, Colette) –

– and a navy worker-bee tote (DVF, $685, StyleBop):

Or, how rad would you look rocking some pink skinnies (J. Brand, on sale for $88, Shopbop) with these outrageously perfect Missoni peep-toes ($785, The Corner), a simple white blousy top ($17.95, H&M), and a big ol necklace ($300, Charm & Chain):

I’d finish with this Botkier tote ($395, Botkier):

I love this floral print dress ($210, Antik Batik), prominently featuring mint green, with a coordinating necklace ($18, Miss Selfridge’s):

I’d pair it with these nude wedges (Stuart Weitzman, $365, Endless):

I’d finish with this frosted green bowling bag ($53, ASOS)?  So funky and retro.

For a dressier occasion, consider Emmanuel Ungardo’s lace-adorned shift ($656, The Outnet) with Amanda Pearl tassel earrings ($125, Amanda Pearl):

Goes perfectly with those glittered Miu Miu t-straps — perfect, perfect evening shoes ($730, Net-A-Porter) — and a green-and-gold clutchski (Chloe, $1,395, Net-A-Porter):

Now, I know I’m jumping the gun with spring/summer pieces, but I just had to feature the perfect espadrille/wedge ($225, Vince Camuto) –

Also — anyone familiar with the line Antipodium?  I’d never heard about it, but am loving their shapes and styles — and they have a few key pieces in darling mint green.  Worth checking out!

Making Me Blush

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Jewelry, Romantic, Shoes on February 14, 2012 at 10:33 am

Happy Valentine’s Day, my little chic peas!  What do you have planned for this love-centric day?!  I, for one, plan to glam it up in a pink/red get-up, and today, I’m feeling inspired by the softness of blush pink.

Bof.  How chic?!  Channeling the oh-so-lovely vibes above, I’m thinking of pairing this lovely Tucker blouse ($265, Net-A-Porter) with a silk flower necklace (Lanvin, $571, Farfetch), skinnies, and some chunky blush footwear ($77, Zappos — I’ve been coveting this pair since I saw them on Ashley of Ring My Bell):

Round it all out with a similarly hued bag (how bomb is this style?! — $76, TopShop):

And — just for fun?  How darling is this enameled giraffe bangle ($98, J. Crew):

For self, try this rosy highlighter ($36, Chantecaille), a pale pink manicure (I wore this shade on my wedding day! — Essie’s “Ballet Slippers,” $7.90, Apothica), and Tocca’s Cleopatra (I carry this in my bag — and its available in a rollerball set with a few other scents — $48, Sephora):

Store your goodies in this pretty reversible clutch ($199, Hammocks and High Tea):

Or, just a pop will do — consider pairing a blush necklace ($65, Roberta Roller Rabbit) with a luscious tangerine color in the form of this shift dress (Tibi, $395, Net-A-Porter):

Finish with these nude mesh pumps ($595, Giuseppe Zanotti) and a pouchlette ($108, Jessica Jensen):

This eye-catching, oversized Erickson Beamon ring ($410, Net-A-Porter) is the perfect addition –

As an alternative, blush and black is a classic partnership.  Try this pastel washed silk blouse (Kain, $155, Net-A-Porter) with a black ribbon statement necklace ($345, Les Pommettes) and a sassy black leather skirt ($160, Net-A-Porter), black tights, and black tootsies ($96, TopShop):

I’d finish with a blush chain-handle bag ($26, ASOS) — or, if you can afford it, spring for the Marc Jacobs Single ($575), which looks remarkably similar:

Looking for other blush accessories?  How sweet is this sequinned rose scarf ($183, Farfetch), or this pair of glitter-toed flats ($98, Endless)?

As for jewelry, loving these druzy stud earrings (Dara Ettinger, $125, Charm & Chain), this simple rose gold wrap bangle ($140, Les Pommettes), and this simple heart charm necklace ($50, By Boe):

And PSST.  If you like the overall aesthetic of the pieces above, you’ll love the styles from Alexis Bittar, which feature lots of sparkle and rose gold.  For a dressed-down occasion, try this blush blazer (I wear mine all.the.time — $425, Reiss — although 3.1 Phillip Lim has a fab variation that costs a bit more…and while you’re at it, check out the entire collection, which is jam-packed with other soft blush separates!) with statement earrings (Suzanna Dai, $150, Charm & Chain), a polka dot blouse ($87, John Lewis), black skinnies, and some peek-a-boo Rupert Sandersons (how sexy are these bad boys?! — $675, Rupert Sanderson):

The dream bag for this look?  Valentino’s Rock Stud ($2,560, Forward Forward) — O.M.G.  This bag means business.

Happy Valentine’s Day, loves!

Pink Ladies

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Brights!, Florals, Fresh Combos, Home Decor, Ikat, Jewelry on February 13, 2012 at 10:43 am

I have no idea what made me reminisce about Grease the other day, but it was one of my very favorite movies growing up, along with Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken {don’t even talk to me if you’ve not seen this CLASSIC} and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers {loved all of those Rogers & Hammerstein musicals, but that one was the most cherished}.  Danny was the ultimate stud-muffin, and I clearly strove to emulate Olivia Newton John’s breathy, wide-eyed innocence…and then her bad-ass leather pantalon getup at the end.  But I mainly wanted to be a Pink Lady.  And I still do.  Get the look with your own shades-of-pink get-ups.  For starters, I love this simple and unfussy silken tank (Tibi, $160, Net-A-Porter) with highly unseasonal white jeans (I know, I know — it was 25 degrees outside this a.m., but the promise of warmer climes is keeping me going) and a tribal plate-style necklace ($29, Miss Selfridge’s):

Accessories-wise, how about these pink-on-red tootsies ($436, Barbara Briones)?

I’d tie it all together with a gold cuff ($65, Bloomingdale’s) and an ikat clutch (I know I’ve featured this before, but how amazing?! — $63, 100 Layer Cake):

For just a POP of pink, consider this fun neon watch ($44, ASOS), a shocking pink mani (I own this exact color from Illamasqua — called “Collide” — and LOVE it — $14, Sephora), and a bold pink blush (Nars, $28, Bloomingdale’s):

Or, sport a monogrammed clutch (well, actually — it’s a cosmetics pouch, but I’d totally rock it during the day — $128, Monogram Goods) and some Barbie pink heels (I die. — $595, Neiman Marcus):

Or, pump things up with a bow-front denim blouse ($227, Farfetch — or get this far more affordable version from ASOS for only $62!), some fuchsia skinnies ($158, Shopbop), and some oversized gold earrings ($1,820, Nordstrom):

Finish with a lighter shade in the pink color family by pairing with these B by Brian Atwood heels I’ve been dying over ($325, Intermix)

With colors so bright, I’d keep the accessories to a muted minimum — I’m thinking just this envelope clutch ($325, Saks):

Or, thoughts on a crisp white tee ($29.50, Madewell), some colorful beaded necklaces ($173 each, Wendy Mink), and a punchy floral-print skirt (OMG — Nanette Lepore, $298, Saks)?

I’d finish with coral slingbacks (Carven, $535, Net-A-Porter):

And a crisp white duffel-style tote (I saw a girl in NYC wearing this over the weekend and pretty much walked into a wall while I ogled at it — $2,085, Bergdorf’s):

Speaking of florals — also love this blouse (DVF, $265, Shopbop) with some patterned pants (BIG trend for spring — $230, Net-A-Porter)

I’d complete with blush flats (Repetto, $265, La Garconne) and a roomy eggshell tote ($357, My Wardrobe):

And, finally — how about this wrap style dress ($270, Net-A-Porter) with black tights and booties (House of Harlow, on sale for $159, My Wardrobe) –

– and the perfect high-contrast bag (DVF, $895, Shopbop), perhaps adorned with a vibrant scarf tied to the handle ($255, Marni)

For home — update a clean white couch/armchair ($1,295, ABC Home) with BRIGHT pink ikat pillows ($50 apiece, Furbish)

An ikat print throw ($135, Shop Furbish) adds extra dimension (love the pinks and reds together) –

– but meanwhile, how awesome are these horse-print-topped poufs ($414, Everything Begins)?!  Grown up beanbag chairs!

Finally, let’s talk about interiors of a different sort — happy hot pink unmentionables, just in time for Valentine’s Day!  I’m loving this line Sexy Panties and Naughty Nickers, and pretty much want everything Journelle’s made available from them, but especially this duo ($50 for top, $37 for bottoms — Journelle):

{Although — if you’re on the lookout for bright underthings, I’m smitten with Cosabella — GREAT colors.}  At any rate.  Now, the moment I know you’ve all been waiting for — the winner of my Kooba giveaway!  First, thank you ALL for entering — and for inspiring me with all of your fab workout ideas.  I am definitely going to be test-driving both Zumba and Barre classes in the near future, so THANKS for the inspo!  The winner is: Carol Buchman!  Carol, drop me an email (jennifer@thefashionmagpie.com) so we can get you suited up with your new gym bag!

That Marilyn Magic

In Accessories, Americana, Beach Wear, Beauty Products, Bombshell, Champagne!, Dream Wear, Pop of Red, Shoes on February 9, 2012 at 10:08 am

Marilyn Monroe is having a serious moment right now.  Not that she ever lost it.  But with the “My Week with Marilyn” movie coming out, she’s especially prominent.  And — I’ll admit that I’m eating it all up with an oversized spoon, even though I consider myself much more of a “Jackie O. gal.”  And I’ll also admit that the following post is a tad on the costume side, but hey!  Sometimes it’s just what the doctor ordered.  Here goes: when I think of Marilyn, I think of her decked out in evening finery, poured into form-fitting dresses, and swirling in champagne:

Get the iconic look with a pleated halter neck (on sale for $144, Reiss) and some sparkling Elizabeth Cole earrings ($232, Beauty):

And — some mah-jor peeptoes (Louboutin, $3,000, Barney’s):

Finish with a white mink stole ($2,028, Farfetch):

Finish with a sparkling brooch ($130, Shop Bando), a rad manicure ($16, Zappos), and some faux cils ($10, Beauty):

Drink out of some retro champagne coups (are these NOT the perfect engagement gift?!  Note the “Mr.” and “Mrs.” engraved on the front! — $80 for set, Nordstrom) for the full effect:

For beach-side lounging?  Take cues from the original {don’t you LOVE the latter shot?  So fresh-faced and genuine!}:

Say yes to this bow-front one-piece (Miu Miu, $245, Net-A-Porter):

Lounge beneath a black-and-white striped cabana ($600, Z Gallerie) –

– and don’t forget to pack the shades (Selima Sun for J. Crew, $118, J. Crew), the sandals ($295, Shopbop), and the awning stripe towel (love these Pottery Barn personalized styles — $29, Pottery Barn):

Though she’s better know for the plunging neckline and white fur get-up, I dug her “bookish” look.

Try it out with a demi-sheer white blouse ($110, Madewell), plaid pants (on sale for $119, J. Crew), and some classic loafers in a bright colors ($425, Bergdorf’s):

Painful as it feels to an over-accessorizer like myself, you’ll note that Marilyn rarely wore much in the way of accent pieces/jewelry.  Instead, complete with some geek chic glasses ($95, Warby Parker) and a borrowed-from-the-boys watch (I own this style in black croc! — Timex, $60, PiperLime):

Don’t forget that beneath all of the bookworm gear, you gotta Bring It with some sexy lingerie (Chantelle, $84 for top, $34 for bottom – Journelle):

Finally, Marilyn had a knack for showcasing her femininity with soft woolen sweaters –

It’s amazing what she could do with a simple turtleneck.  Consider channeling her simple but sexy vibe with a straight-forward sweater of your own ($130, Bloomingdale’s) and a black pencil skirt ($79, Banana Republic):

Finish with a low kitten heel — Marilyn probably would have worn a solid, but I just had to feature a snakeskin variation to bring it all into the 21st century (Stella McCartney, $690, Net-A-Porter):

And, of course, a bold red lip (YSL is my jam — $32, Saks) — evening gloves and vintage Nikon optional:

Don’t forget the breathy voice.  And definitely do not forget to enter my giveaway for the world’s most perfect gym bag from KoobaCheck out yesterday’s post for details!

I Work Out.

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Gym Gear, Intimates, Shoes on February 8, 2012 at 10:19 am

Yes, the title of this post is a line from that LMFAO song that weasels its way into my subconscious and settles in for the long haul.  But, more importantly, it’s now been reclaimed as the segue into a MAH-JOR-LY exciting announcement: the bomb.com giveaway of the world’s most perfect gym bag from Kooba.  You heard right: one lucky reader will be winning this awesome tote from the super generous design geniuses over at Kooba!  All you have to do is like them on Facebook {they are trying to hit the big 6000 number for “likes”!} and leave a comment on this post telling me how you keep in shape!  A winner will be announced this upcoming Monday, 2/13!

This bag is reason enough to get my tuchus to the gym.  As I mentioned here, I’ve been on the Tracy Anderson pain train for the past few weeks.  Her mat routine is killa, and all you need is a chair, 3 lb weights, and a yoga mat.  I dress in super bright workout gear as a way to sort of peacock my way into thinking it’s a fun way to spend an hour.  Well, that’s not an entirely fair representation — I actually like working out (endorphins!) and I never feel better than just after a solid exercise sesh.  But sometimes, as I’m doing the millionth leg kick, I feel unpleasantly testy.  So I compensate with smile-inducing brights, like these sports bras ($14, Old Navy)

Now, as I believe I’ve made overly abundantly clear in past posts, I cannot live without my Nike spandex ($48, Zappos).

I own two pairs and they both have lasted for.ev.er, with multiple wears per week.  That, and they breathe — and move — and don’t cut off circulation.  This past point is particularly important because, in a random moment of 90s nostalgia, I snapped up a pair of Adidas running capris {remember when everyone and their Mom owned a pair of swishy-swashy pants with the three stripes down the sides?!  We all had them in the 90s…}.  Now, I will say that these Adidas pants come in great colors, and I also felt slightly retro-cool running around Glover Park with them on, but they were so constricting I could hardly breathe.  So.  Nike it is, for this little lady.  And Nike it is on my feet, as well — I rock out their Free Runs ($100, Zappos), which are the lightest shoe known to man.  Great for running, and I always get compliments on them.  And the colors make my heart sing.

I also use a brightly colored yoga mat ($33, Amazon) and hand-weights (Tracy claims that you should never use more than 3 lb weights when using her workout or you “just create more space for loose skin” — $12 for set, Amazon) –

Water must always be at the ready — and these Bobble water filters are incroyable ($9.99, Target):

When I’m not in my tried-and-true Nike spandex, I’m in candy-colored shorts.  How slick are these Old Navy pairs ($15, Old Navy)?!  Best colors ever!  I’d wear it with this funky giraffe-front tank ($26, Nike):

Other work-out musts?  An easy-on, loose-fit sweatshirt.  I wear one from my alma mater, UVA, but this boxy, 80s style variation caught my eye ($22, Target):

I also need peds ($10, Jack Wills).  I buy mine in bulk {literally — packs of 20} at Costco in the brightest colors I can find, because I literally run them to threads and/or lose half of them somewhere between the dirty hamper and my clean laundry basket.  I swear that I have no pair that actually matches, so I’m constantly in mis-matched peds.  No idea how this happens.  Mystery of life.

I also need waterproof mascara ($24.50, Sephora), Tarte cheek stain ($30, Sephora), and snag-free hair elastics ($3.50, Sephora):

Post work-out, I like to lounge in loose-fit sweats (on sale for $47, J. Crew) and a tissue-thin tee (I love the cheeky Rebel Yell line! — $63, Revolve):

If I’ve just completed my work at the gym, I’ll layer on a thin, breathable windbreaker (this is kids size, but what cool shades! — KWay, $45, J. Crew):

I top it all off with a loose, gauzy scarf  (still digging Virginia Johnson’s styles! — on sale for $97, Virginia Johnson):

So — who’s ready to work out?!

The Little Lady Travels

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Cocktail Dresses, Florals, Jewelry, The Little Lady on February 7, 2012 at 12:39 pm

Those who have been reading TFM for awhile may remember a series a did a long while back — “The Little Lady” series, a cluster of posts about an imaginary version of myself with poise, elegance, and a Hitchock heroine vibe {see here, here, here, and here}.  Today, that series continues, in part inspired by yesterday’s Wanderlust post.  As I pieced together the looks, I kept itching to put together a few get-ups more closely akin to what Betty Draper packed when she traveled to Rome with Don, but they just didn’t fit with the contemporary looks I was gravitating towards yesterday. So today I want the full Jackie O.-on-vacation treatment.

First, check out this demure white travel dress (Moschino, $350, My Wardrobe) with some vintage-looking enorma-studs ($405, Net-A-Porter):

Divine with the Viv flat ($228, J. Crew) –

– and a seriously ladylike bag (Kate Spade, $525, Endless):

She travels in style with this ridiculously luxe rollaboard ($1,470, Lena Erziak) –

For day-time exploring, the Little Lady dons a tweed jacket (did I mention that she’s loaded?! — Oscar de la Renta, $1,800, Net-A-Porter), enorma-studs ($325, Vivre), a white bow-front blouse (Jason Wu, $560, Browns), skinnies, and the perfect nude flat ($250, Loeffler Randall):

A structured tote (Tory Burch, $550, Shopbop) finishes the look:

For a daytime shopping trip, how darling is this retro cut ($108, Modcloth), which I’d pair with these seashell-inspired earrings (I own this exact pair and get compliments on them all.the.time — $68, Juliet and Company):

I’d finish with classic Jack Rogers ($105, Zappos) and a boxy straw bag ($58, Espadrilles Etc):

Don’t forget the retro cat-eyes (Selima for J. Crew, $128, J. Crew) and camera ($109, Modcloth):

Now, this khaki shirt-dress (Miu Miu, $1,290, MyTheresa) is oh so Gwyneth Paltrow in”The Incredibly Talented Mr. Ripley,” and looks ravishing, dahling, with some enorma-studs (Bounkit, $320, Charm & Chain):

I’d finish with some bold bow-toed flats (~$300, Pretty Ballerinas) –

– and a pop of green in the form of this boxy Kate Spade cross-body ($445, Zappos):

And, finally, while on the topic of green, how to die is this floral-print ladylike dress ($247, Conifer Shop)?!  I’d pair it with pearls, pearls, and more pearls — and I love the Miriam Haskell collection, so I’d lay it on thick ($200 for earrings; $480 for necklace):

I’d finish with the classic Louboutin Pigalle ($625, Neiman’s) and a sleek green clutch (DVF, $415, Matches):

I need a getaway!

Wanderlust

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Ikat, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on February 6, 2012 at 1:35 pm

I’ve got a keen case of wanderlust this morning.  All I can think about is jumping on a plane with Mr. Magpie to somewhere warm and exotic and feeling a lovely distance from my little life here.  This print from Etsy storefront Vaporqualquer ($15) pretty much says it all:

To outfit this dream excursion, I’ve of course imaginatively lassoed together a range of global-leaning separates.

I love this asymmetrical dress (Myne, on sale for $138, Thistle & Clover) with a wood bead necklace ($85, Max & Chloe):

By day, I’d wear these with white t-straps ($59, Repertoire) for comfortable exploring, and would carry all of my essentials in the classic Chloe Marcie ($1,895, Net-A-Porter):

Or — how about this eye-catching statement necklace ($96, Bellissima Jewelry) with a coral tee ($29, J. Crew) and some mint skinnies ($88, Shopbop), finished with straight-forward, unfussy leather sandals ($105, Must Haves):

I’d finish with the J. Crew Tillary ($328, J. Crew) – - OMG.  OBSESSED.  Doesn’t it remind you ever-so-much of the Celine Boston I’ve been drooling over for centuries?!

Accent with a bold, gauzy scarf ($125, Roberta Roller Rabbit):

Another daytime favorite?  A blousy tunic top ($124, Pink Chicken), which I’d pair with colored denim shorts (yep, you heard me — jorts. — J. Brand, on sale for $111, Shopbop) and some classic aviators ($90, Alex and Alexa):

Slip on some simple t-straps ($65, Zappos) –

A simple, foldable ($98, Bloomingdale’s) carry-all makes a welcome addition to the packing list — I stow a few of these in my luggage just in case I make some purchases…

Keep track of your travels in a sleek travel journal ($60, Smythson):

Or, how about this eye-catching necklace ($425, Cynthia Desser), worn with a simple cotton dress ($115, Weekday)?

I’d finish with those funky Rupert Sanderson ankle breakers ($875, MyTheresa) and this fringed clutch (so fun — $53, ASOS) for a night out on the town:

Or, how about a simple, boxy voile top ($265, My Wardrobe) with a pair of BRIGHT shorts ($49, J. Crew) and this amazing statement necklace, made of scarves (! — $495, Sight Unseen):

Perfect with  a metallic-flecked espadrille ($208, Mymu) –

– and a printed scarf (on sale for $97, Virginia Johnson):

And you can’t go wrong with packing a few other tribal-inspired necklaces, like this one from Marisa Haskell ($170), and an extra pair of wedges (these Tory Burches are perfection — $195, Shopbop):

So — anyone else got the travel bug?!

Block It Up

In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Fierce, Fresh Combos on February 3, 2012 at 12:17 pm

If you follow me on Pinterest {PSST — if you want an invite so you can create an account, just email me at jennifer@thefashionmagpie.com!}, you’ll notice a wee obsession with the bright colorblocking trend that’s been cropping up all over the place.  You’ll also notice that Nina Garcia (former creative director of Elle and Marie Claire) has a Pinterest account that I stalk, and she has an entire board dedicated to the trend.  So.  A little street cred for this post.

Holla back.  Love these vibrant, eye-catching get-ups! Replicate the look (quite literally) with THE Giambattista Valli dress (on sale for a casual $2K, MyTheresa):

With a look this bold, you gotta go big or go home, so I’d finish with more color-blocking fabulosity in the form of these unbelievable Charlotte Olympia tootsies ($875, Net-A-Porter) and a classic Amanda Pearl roll clutch ($995, Amanda Pearl):

The only jewelry I’d add?  This bold statement bracelet ($68, J. Crew) — and MAN is J. Crew killing it with their jewelry right now!  I want everything.

Whew.  OK.  Now that we’ve seriously broken the bank, let’s bring it back into my price galaxy by checking out this DKNY dress (on sale for $202, MyWardrobe — or, get the look for far, far less with this Shop Ruche style!), which, in these lingering winter months, I’d pair with black tights, a neon necklace ($46, Color Block Shop), and my patent Loubs ($775, Barney’s):

Finish with a coordinating Celine pouch ($410, order through Dressed):

Also kind of digging the sportiness of this 10 Crosby by Derek Lam dress ($395, Shopbop) with one of those David Aubrey necklaces I’ve been swooning over ($84, David Aubrey):

I like the idea of finishing the look with the unexpected fierceness of these Alexander Wang heels (NOT for the faint of heart — $525, Shopbop) and the ultimate It bag du jour, the PS1 pochette ($895, Barney’s):

While you’re at it, check out the entire Alexander Wang collection for more sporty-downtown-chic looks.  Loving everything.  Fierce.  Now, I know this is reaching for the stars, but check out this bright look: a chartreuse sweater (Michael Kors, $595, Net-A-Porter — OR check out the $72 J. Crew Tippi sweater in citrus lime!) and a bold statement necklace ($76, Bauble Bar), finished with gray jeans ($198, Shopbop) and some speckle-colored snakeskin pumps (Louboutin, $1,195, Net-A-Porter):

The finishing touch?!  This roomy “I’m the woman” Balenciaga tote ($1,595, Balenciaga):

Or, let’s talk accessories.  Consider this necklace from Holst + Lee with this color-blocked fold-over clutch (LOVE the tassel — $79, K. Slademade) and these bold bow-toe flats ($58, Heels):

Loving the strawberry lining along the zipper seam of the clutch above.  Speaking of strawberry, check out these fierce tootsies from Loeffler Randall’s new spring collezione ($295, Loeffler Randall):

KIND OF meant to go with this Milly jacket (on sale for $242, My Wardrobe) and/or this See by Chloe bag ($495, Shopbop):

Or, check out this cluster of aqua pretties, which would pop against a basic black or white canvas: the J. Crew bubble necklace ($150, J. Crew), these fierce Rupert Sanderson wedges ($875, MyTheresa), and an Anya Hindmarch pouch ($130, Colette):

Are you dying over the colors?!

********

This past weekend, I felt so exhausted and worn-out, I decided to stay in on a Saturday night.  I felt a little badly/jealous when I received texts from Mr. Magpie while he was out enjoying a chili cook-off with some of our friends, but that R&R was so badly needed that I couldn’t conceal my relief and delight at having an evening to myself.  {OK, on a scale of 1-10, how old womanish is this introduction?  Am I divulging a secret inner-Cathy?  Remember Cathy from the comic strips we read while growing up?  Even at a young age, I hoped I’d never turn out like her.  So whiny.}  Anyway, if you’re on my level, I highly advocate that you do the same some evening in the future — I hadn’t realized how much I needed a night off and alone!  So follow my lead with the following steps…

And I mean dress down.  I wore a tattered old UVA tee of Mr. Magpie’s {oh so soft, oh so hole-filled} comparable to this Rebel Yell style (on super sale for $22, Karmaloop) and some boy shorts (Hanky Panky — $29, Bloomingdale’s):

I completed the look with a snuggly robe (Eberjey, on sale for $89, Journelle) and my glasses (I hate wearing them, but need ‘em to see the boob tube — I have the same pair of tortoise shell specs I’ve had since high school, but these geek chic Warby Parkers are pretty rad — $95, Warby Parker):

Finally, a pair of trusty ol slippers (Minnetonka, $36, Zappos):

Once outfitted in sufficiently cozy threads {slightly man-repelling, eh?}, I moved onto step 2.

Remember when we were little and used to build forts?!  I pretty much did that this past Saturday.  I essentially sat in a massive pile of pillows and blankets and loved every second of it.  Build your own with this retro back pillow ($340, Chic Shop), the classic ultra-covet Hermes Avalon blanket (ha — $2,575, Hermes), and some fluffy pillows (TOP: $55, Caitlin Wilson; BOTTOM: $110, Everything Begins):

Scent your pillow palace with your favorite candle.  My go-tos are Tocca’s “Florence” and Diptyque’s “Baies,” but on this particular day, I felt like I needed a change and was really loving Jo Malone’s “Pomegranate Noir” ($65, Saks):

Crocker or Draper — either works, depending on how happy you want to be about spending time in the kitchen.  I baked some snackeroos for myself, donning my classic apron (yes, Charlotte did wear this in Sex and the City — $32, Jessie Steele):

I made these little cornflake-based treats called “Honey Crackles” — you basically melt butter with sugar and honey, pour it over cornflakes, and bake for 10 minutes.  So crunchy and delicious.  And fun to make when you have fun new kitchen implements, like these heart-shaped measuring spoons ($6.95, PaperSource), pink mixing bowls ($24.99, Amazon), and a cherry red whisk (Le Creuset, $24, Amazon):

Don’t forget the cute cupcake liners (on sale for $9.49, Linens N Things):

Handle with care by virtue of these darling oven mitts ($8.95, Paper Source):

All of that Couch Potato time was the perfect opportunity to read, make lists, and plan future blog posts — three things that constitute ultimate relaxation for me.  I’m reading Jonathan Foer’s “Incredibly Loud and Extremely Close” for a book club I just joined, but I took a break for the night to revisit one of my favorite books of all time — Virginia Woolf’s “To the Lighthouse.”  My version is tattered, dog-eared, and cluttered with notes, but Pentagram just released versions of all of Woolf’s classics with the loveliest cover designs:

I kept notes on future blog posts in a little Smythson notebook that my maid of honor gave me just before my wedding (love that this style says “OMG!” on the front — $60, Smythson) and updated my planner (I own this pink croc personalized Graphic Image style, but this fun little Sarah Pinto version caught my eye — $20, Sarah Pinto).  I of course used my Le Pens for these activities.  I swear by their razor-like tip.  Perfect for my freakishly neat handwriting.

I’ll admit it.  I’m a chick flick fan.  I feel abashed at this because so many of my good girlfriends are the types who scrunch up their nose and want to punch the screen when they watch this trash.  But I love it, and will continue to watch it on the sly when I have nights to myself.  Saturday night’s matinee showing?  “No Strings Attached.”  Not outta this world, but it did the trick — and I died when Ashton Kutcher called Natalie Portman “a female Rick Moranis.”  Best reference ever.  This viewing required popcorn ($11.99, Target — I make mine on the stovetop — so cheap, so easy, and you can adjust the flavor, salt, and butter levels to your liking.  I sometimes sprinkle mine with parmesan cheese or, when I’m feeling indulgent, truffle oil):

– served in a retro popcorn box ($9.95, Sur La Table) –

– and a large Coke Zero, enjoyed through a straw ($3.50 for 15, In the Clear).

It felt sorta wrong to be home for so long without doing something productive around the house, so I did about 3498 loads of laundry.  Mr. Magpie and I have the tiniest washer/dryer known to man.  I swear that it fits one sock, one teeshirt, and one washcloth at a time, and it still takes 23 hours to fully dry.  I had a stockpile of sheets and towels from recent house-guests that needed laundering, so I accomplished quite a bit.  I use this lovely Tocca scent for my delicates ($15, Beauty Bar):

I don’t own this retro laundry cart ($185, Old Faithful Shop), but for some reason I want it and imagine that laundry time would be better with it.  If for nothing else, it’s on wheels.  So there’s that.

I also used a little trick I learned from a salesclerk at Blue Mercury — I stop the dryer when my clothes are still a touch damp and spray a little Diptyque Room Spray in the Baies scent ($60, Aedes).  It gives my clothes and linens a nice little scent.

Enough said.  I was snuggled up, lights out, by around 11.  That’s early for me, but I’m something of a night owl.

OK, so this last step wasn’t part of my 7-part stress-relief night in.  And I’ll admit to a little grouchiness when he called me up around midnight requesting a ride home, in turn requiring that I drag my sleepy little self out of my nest and brace myself for the freezing January air.  But then — totally worth it to have Mr. Magpie back in bed!
