Stormy Weather

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Brights!, Fierce, Shoes on December 29, 2011 at 11:31 am

On Emo Days, I wear black.  {To be read in the manner of “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” from “Mean Girls” — see this moment of cinematic glory here — aka the apex of Lindsay Lohan’s creative capabilities, and the official end of her career.  See?  I’m emo.}  These are the days that begin when I look in my closet and turn up my nose at the parade of colors and patterns lining its {jam-packed} walls.  These are the days I dress in {what I consider to be} sophisticated black and tell myself I’m going to move to NYC, contemplate stuffing all of my old Lilly Pulitzer into a trunk to be stored at my parents’, and generally walk around with a chip on my shoulder.  I lean towards slick, urban ensembles of all black, with occasional pops of citrine yellow {my new jam}, and wish that I was cool enough to know what “underground bands” are before inevitably flipping to 99.5 and jamming out to some bubble gum Rihanna.  Par example: a tweed Moschino jacket (love the zipper detail — on sale for $1,182, Net-A-Porter), black skinnies, and sloafers ($60, TopShop):

I’d finish with this neon-accented purselette (Marc Jacobs, $410, Matches):

And then — some It Gal shades (Beiber and Kanye wear this brand, so you know they’re “hip” — Super, $139, Madewell):

And — why not?  A neon-accented cuff ($375, CC Skye):

Yeehaw, city slicker style.  Anything in my wardrobe featuring leather is also acceptable.  I wish that included this moody leather-accented shift (Chloe, $1,345, MyTheresa), which I’d wear with my hair loose and slightly unkempt and a pair of glossy aviators (The Row, $355, Barney’s):

I’d finish it off with clean color-blocked tote (this one is by Celine, but you’d need to go to a boutique to make it your own) and some fantastic shoes (Zanotti, on sale for $657, Net-A-Porter):

As for accents?  Just a minimalist watch (Movado, $1,495, Bloomingdale’s), a fierce iPhone cover ($98, Jagger Edge), and a swipe of red lipstick (Chanel, $43, CosmeticMall), and a spritz of elegant perfume ($145, Barney’s):

Or, how this darling dalmatian print dress (DKNY, $371, MyWardrobe)?  {Or, check out this comparable Parker style ($242), which I’m absolutely coveting.  It’s on the short list for new purchases in the coming months.  Please go on sale.}

I’d finish with the iconic Alexander Wang Rocco bag (and P.S. — everything from Alexander Wang would pretty much fit the bill for Emo Days — $875, Ssense) and some black tootsies (these Alexa Chung-style short boots from Topshop would be the ideal footwear pairing, but I’m afraid of them — so I’d opt for something funky in a Magpie way, like these ruffled Maison Margiela booties — on sale for $482, Shopbop):

Before you roll your eyes at the boots {I’m normally more of an advocate for functionality, I promise!}, just know that Kelly Wearstler {aka chicest woman on planet} rocks her own pair in hot pink.  {Get inspired by checking out her visually stimulating blog, MyVibeMyLife.}  I’d add a spritz of ladylike perfume (how TDF is this bottle?! — $145, Barney’s):

Alternately, pair neon yellow sunnies (Super, $130, Intermix), which add an element of the devil may care to any ensemble, with a tailored black leather jacket (Moschino, $658, MyWardrobe), black shorts ($255, Rag&Bone), black tights, and those Givenchy flats I’m still drooling over ($520, Jade24):

Very Kate Moss, in my view.  Perfection.  I’d add only a simple clutch pouch — still coveting a classic two-tone Celine style:

Is the above look a bit too edgy for ya, between the bold sunnies, the leather jacket, and the shorts-tights combo?  Never fear.  Try out a ladylike pencil skirt (Proenza Schouler, on sale for $395, MyTheresa) with a black blouse (Marc Jacobs, $254, MyWardrobe) and some black enorma-studs ($93, John Lewis):

Finish with these gold-capped heels ($220, Vince Camuto):

If you’re not afraid of a little matchy-matchiness and are of limitless funds, you might finish with this fantastic tweed cropped jacket (Giambattista Valli, $4,365, Net-A-Porter):

For just a taste, consider this bold yellow necklace (Noir, $253, Shopbop) with a leather-trimmed sheath (Rag&Bone, $495, Barney’s), tights, and booties (love the cuffed detail — on sale for $298, Loeffler Randall):

Top it all off with this dalmatian print clutch (Alexander Wang, $525, Net-A-Porter):

For home, decorate the coffee table with this slick Tom Ford book (quite the investment…$279, Amazon):

Lovely effect with your day-glo yellow tootsies tucked beneath the table (Jeffrey Campbell, on sale for $65, Karmaloop):

{Although — PSST — kind of love the above style in this pink jaguar print.  Get outta here.  But that’s for a non-emo magpie day.}  Top your book stack off with my favorite candle scent ever — Diptyque’s “Baies” ($90, Saks):

And — just for a little fun, consider this day-glo yellow Cambridge Satchel Company messenger I’ve been whining about this past couple of weeks ($155, Shopbop):

A comparable style is available for only $48 here if you’re looking for the style on the cheap.  Finally, round it all out with perfume in lovely black packaging ($69, Bloomingdale’s) and a moody nail lacquer ($16, Apothica):

The polish is aptly named “Stormy Weather.”  And, finally, lest we all get too emo on ourselves, let’s realize that it’s ALMOST the New Year and it’s time to glam up for the occasion!  As a special treat to my lovely readers, the uber-talented fashion illustrator INSLEE HAYNES has sweetly offered one lucky magpie a print of one of her most fabulous fashion sketches!  (See below!)  EEE!  How’s that for getting into the holiday spirit?!  All you have to do is leave a comment on this post describing your NYE get-up for this year!  If you want to be a doll, please LIKE Inslee on Facebook or follow her on Twitter.  I had the opportunity to chat with his little chic pea, and she is the sweetest, most talented little lady in the planet.  So hop to it!

It’s almost a new year — time for reinvention, revision, rebirth.  And I, for one, love the feeling of a fresh start.  In the spirit of that adventurousness, I’m sharing a few discoveries I’ve made in the past few weeks — thing that intrigue me, things I love, things I’m inspired by, and all in a rumbly tumbly melange perfect for this slow holiday workweek.

At the repeated request of my lovely friend Alison Kenworthy, a talented local news reporter here in The District, I watched the fascinating documentary “Bill Cunningham NY,” an insider’s look at one of the most revered and prolific street style photographers in the world.  (As Anna Wintour, chief editor at Vogue, put it, “We all get dressed for Bill.”)  He still shoots and assembles the New York Times street style column, and he’s still #winning.  The film is a moving tribute to a man who has humbly and lovingly dedicated his life to his craft.  Something about the peculiar juxtaposition of his quiet, unassuming personality with the extravagance and flashiness of the fashion world that he records with such transparent glee strikes a deeply meaningful chord.

Yes, it’s definitely upon us.  And, lucky for us all, Shopbop is today featuring free overnight shipping for those of us who tend to procrastinate.  I just ordered this glittery lil number and am giddy with excitement.  In a similar last-minute predicament?  Check out lines Rory Beca or Shoshanna for glam NYE-appropriate numbers.  It’s a little late to be planning your own do, but — maybe next year, you can test out this adorable idea for an NYE bash invitation from bloglet You Are My Fave {discovered via Luella and June}!

{images via You Are My Fave}

This little confetti confection above reminds me of the company Confetti System, which is enjoying the limelight thanks to this month’s issue of Martha Stewart Living, which I pored over from cover to cover on the plane back from Florida a few days ago.  One of the articles featured a lovely party accented with all kinds of Confetti System goodies, including their lovely tassel garlands ($130 apiece, Confetti System):

They also have glitzy pinatas, which would be fun to fill with more confetti ($140 and up).  How could you NOT ring in the new year with style with those sorts of decorations?!  Equally as festive — these darling confetti pom-pom straws I spotted over on the Cupcakes and Cashmere bloglet.

{image via Cupcakes and Cashmere}

And speaking of the bubbly, Santa filled my stocking with lots of my favorite gummy candies and a bottle of pink champagne (Mirabelle Rose, available here) from the Schramsberg winery out in Napa.  Mr. Magpie and I popped the cork on Christmas evening, after spending a lovely couple of days with my family in FL and Christmas day with his parents.  It’s our Christmas tradition: drink champagne while watching “A Christmas Story” (his favorite — mine is “Home Alone”) and exchanging gifts.  The pink bubbly made it all the more special, because I know he’d done it just for little ol me.

I’m not sure whether it was just being in Florida {I saw none in real life, but…} or seeing them on a marathon of Planet Earth with my siblings, but when I saw this funky little photo print ($25-$5,000, depending on the size, TheAnimalPrintShop), I kind of knew I needed to add it to my gallery wall, which, thanks to my incredibly generous and thoughtful husband, is now off to a good start.  {He bought me an original canvas from the Him and Her Shop!}  Well, it’s a tie between either the photo below or this darling print from Etsy storefront Untitled Thread ($20 for 8×10).  And check out the name of the latter print — “All the Single Ladies.”  Love.

Since we’re talking pink, I should also mention that I am currently living for this day-glo pink tootsies from Brian Atwood ($595, Bergdorf’s).  Perfect for my bestie’s bachelorette bash, which I’m currently planning with the rest of the bridal party.  We’re doing VEGAS.  Woot woot.

While on the subject of footwear: don’t judge me, but I’ve been watching with interest the micro-trend of hi-fashion sneaks for the past few months.  I’m pretty sure I’m not leggy or model-off-duty-looking enough to pull them off, but then again, I thought for months that I wouldn’t be able to pull these off, but then, mid-season, went ahead and snagged them and haven’t looked back for a minute.  Not sure you’re buying it?  Check out Alessandra D’Ambrosio, Anne Hathaway, and Miranda Kerr.  How slick and fashion-forward do they look?!

I’m loving this Alexander Wang style (“The Dillon,” $385, Shopbop) — cool gal chic without being too intense.

Willing to try something bolder?  These Ash wedge hi-tops are pretty awesome ($225, Shopbop):

Um, do I even need to justify my obsession with the eye-catching glitterati above?!

#1: Earrings, $145, Doloris Petunia

#2: Necklace, $495, Samantha Wills

#3: Noir Jewelry Neon Knot Bracelet, $143, Shopbop {and while you’re ogling over it, check out the entire Noir Jewelry Collection.  Obsessed.}

#4: Shourouk Bracelet, $200, Net-A-Porter

#5: Gumball Stud Earrings, $24, Macys

#6: Neon Bib Necklace, $39, ColorBlockShop

Keep it all vibrant on this equally BRIGHT jewelry tray just for fun ($75, ShopFurbish):

While I was in FL, my baby sister whipped out a steamer {in true Parson’s grad fashion} and steamed her clothes before heading out for the day.  I learned that she’s saved a bundle on dry cleaning by investing in a steamer — she said that more often than not, her clothes aren’t “dirty,” just a little wrinkled or creased.  And a steamer is the perfect way to release those wrinkles and leave her garments looking good as new.  I rushed home and ordered my own mini steamer.  I’d read good things about the Joy Mangano for HSN model ($19-$44 depending on kit, HSN) in a Martha Stewart mag — and they come in such beautiful colors! — I snagged one immediately.

My Dad and I were reminiscing about favorite moments from my wedding over the Christmas holiday, and we both dwelt on the unexpected singing of the “Good Ol Song” (the University of Virginia’s fight song) just as Mr. Magpie and I were departing.  I had just thrown the bouquet and we were about to run down the dramatic stairs at my family’s country club to leave when all of the sudden, The Good Ol Song broke out, and we all stopped and sang it, including my Dad {’71}, my groom {’05}, and dozens of guests {all Wahoos}.  It was such a beautiful and unrehearsed way to pay tribute to the place where Mr. Magpie and I fell in love, and the song always gets us Virginians all riled up and ready to party {check this flash mob video out — UVA students singing the Good Ol Song in Clemons library, my old stomping ground.  It makes me want to stand up on my desk at work and start chanting/yelling.}, so it was the perfect “high” to leave on.  I miss you, Virginia.

**And lucky for us, The Good Ol Song is played to the tune of “Auld Lang Syne,” the traditional hymn sung on New Year’s Eve, so we’ll get to demonstrate our love of old Virginny then, too.  Also lucky for us: I found this ah-may-zing text-filled silhouette of the Old Dominion ($12, B and A Prints — and they have loads of other states, too!) that I gave to Mr. Magpie as a stocking stuffer.  Lovesies.

Seeing Stars

In Accessories, Americana, Beauty Products, Black, Brights!, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes on December 20, 2011 at 11:54 am

UPDATE: SORRY FOR THE DELAY (!!!) but a winner has been picked for the Julie Elizabeth giveaway!  The winner is SARAH BROOKE KANE!  I will email you to get you set-up.  HAPPY NEW YEAR!

*********

I’m not normally one for quirky prints.  Given my pixie-like stature {ha, that’s putting it kindly — more like elfin!..I’m only 5’1}, I avoid anything that might peg me as a child {including Peter Pan collars, plaid kilts, and rompers} with a dead-pan commitment you’ll rarely see me display elsewhere — and quirky prints definitely fall into the high risk category.  {Kourtney K. looked awesome in this horse-print number, but I promise someone would stop me on the street and ask whether I’d lost my way from the nearest Kindergarten classroom if I attempted the same.}  The above notwithstanding, I’ve fallen hard for the star motif I’ve been spotting all over the place this past year.  First, it paraded its way down the catwalk at D&G:

Please avert your eyes from the fashion tragedy going on towards the bottom-half of the above snaps.  Socks with pumps are still an egregious fashion sin, IMO.  LMAO.  TTYL.  LOL.  {Sorry for the abbreviation vomit — I was so shocked at myself for using “IMO” that my fingers took control and I ran with it.  Seriously, what?  Since when do I use “IMO”?  I’ve been working in an office environment too long.}  And — back to the beat — of course, backstage at D&G was cluttered with stars:

Then I saw it on my favorite bloggerina, Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific.  {Bonus points (!) for the pattern play!}

And, then, on street style favorites Emily Weiss {yes, she was on “The Hills” as the awesome, perfectionist New Yorker who came to help LC with a big event in L.A. — BELOW, as snapped by StyleTao} and this little chic pea caught on Stockholm Street Style:

OK, so clearly, the star print can be elevated to make a refined or even edgy fashion statement.  So I’m all aboard for this space tour. For the edgier chic peas out there, consider this cool girl blazer ($130, TopShop), which would look excellent paired with a sparkly statement necklace ($329, Samantha Wills — and don’t EVEN get me started about the fabulosity of this new jewelry collection.  I want one of everything in her e-boutique), black skinnies, and some fierce tootises (I want these Jimmy Choos like there’s nothing else in the universe — on sale for $690, Net-A-Porter):

A little pop o neon is all this downtown chic look needs, and I of course instantly turned to Cambridge Satchel Company for their cross-bodies.  Yes, please.  This yellow number has my name written all over it ($155, Shopbop):

And — well, maybe a few of these sparkling bangles (Alexis Bittar, $185 apiece, Nordstrom):

Alternately, pair a feminine star-print blouse (Sonia Rykiel, $450, Net-A-Porter) with one of those trendy collar necklaces (Pamela Love, $277, Forward Forward), a full skirt (this style I saw at H&M for only $20!  Alternately, check out the entire current Halston Heritage collection, which features a ton of pleated skirts and dresses.  Love-leh.), black tights, and black-and-gold flats (Givenchy, $520, Jades24):

I’d finish with a classic quilted bag.  Chanel would be preferable, but this Marc Jacobs style is nice and roomy as well ($1,195, Barney’s):

Oh, and maybe a pair of delicate star-shape earrings ($45, ByBoe) and a swipe of orange-red lipstick.  I live in YSL Rouge Pur Couture #13 ($30, Saks):

If you’re really going to gun for the look {and have the $$ to spare}, go for the real McCoy with the floaty D&G gown seen on the runways ($2,497, Net-A-Porter).  Perfect with this glittery, star-shaped enorma-studs (Judith Jack, on sale for $148, Zappos):

Finish with some fab pumps — check out this slick Zara pair! ($79, Zara) and a small, structured metallic clutch (Alexander Wang, on super sale for $189, Barney’s):

And, PSST.  This inexpensive ASOS star-print dress will do in a pinch if you NEED the look but lack the funds.  Alternately, check out this galaxy-print dress ($308, Les Nouvelles) with a bold statement necklace ($340, Suzanna Dai):

Perfect with some bold bronze pumps ($640, Intermix) and a star-studded clutch ($270, Kotur):

Or, go for the bold print-play with this striped, fitted number (Bensoni, on sale for $292, LesNouvelles) and a star-print scarf (on sale for $15, Mango):

Finish with simple black pumps ($195, Vince Camuto):

I’d finish with a bold pop of pink/red (Marc by Marc Jacobs, $530, Net-A-Porter):

And then an architectural gold cuff ($65, Bloomingdale’s) and a pair of vintage button earrings (Chanel, $317, Farfetch):

Or, consider this star-print scarf (Sonia Rykiel, $150, Kirna Zabete) with a color-blocked top (Gucci, $625, Bergdorf’s), some denim skinnies, and a pair of snakeskin loafers ($195, Vince Camuto):

Perfect with these starburst studs (Janna Conner, $635, Max & Chloe) –

– and a big, roomy tote.  I’m still hung up on the Celine boston bag ($1,800, Farfetch):

Finally, a couple of small-scale items to mix and match and mold into your wardrobe: a cheapy version of the Kotur clutch above ($41, ASOS), some galaxy-style pumps (Jimmy Choo, on sale for $518, Net-A-Porter), and a star-speckled bangle (D&G, $377, Net-A-Porter):

Finally, a star ring ($50, Shopbop):

In conclusion, two thoughts — the first gratuitous, and the other exciting.  Gratuitous comment 1: though this is not even peripherally related to the foregoing post, I needed to brag about the most amazing massage ever in the history of massages in all of life.  I treated myself to a little “merry Christmas to me” gift last night when I booked a 50 minute massage with Jay at SomaSpa.  O.M.G.  I strutted into that treatment room with a chip on my shoulder and announced, with the sort of unsolicited and undeserved know-it-allness of a true brat, “I carry a lot of stress in my shoulders and back.”  The masseur (aka god-like magician of amazingness) nodded understandingly and then asked a series of questions about my fitness regimen and my health history, which led him to realize that since I run quite a bit, my legs were probably in poor shape.  I shrugged it off, but OH MY GOD.  The leg portion of the Swedish massage was a revelation.  I actually think I died for a few seconds and entered heaven.  If you are in the D.C. area and need some TLC, book immediately so you can share my zen.  I think I would be a very happy, holistic, well-balanced individual if I had a little more Jay in my life.  {Incidentally, Mr. Magpie was not.so.happy to discover that my massage was administered by a male.  Sorry, Mr. Magpie.  I was too distracted by my bliss to pay attention to gender.}

The second comment: don’t forget to enter my Julie Elizabeth giveaway!  One lucky TFM reader will win this lovely pair of earrings!  All you need to do is LIKE me on Facebook or  follow me on Twitter and then leave a comment on this post below explaining why you want the earrings.  I’ll announce a winner on FRIDAY!  AND: enjoy 20% off with coupon code: HOLIDAYS.  Yeehaw!

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Beauty Products, Brights!, Shoes, The Honeymoon Trousseau on December 19, 2011 at 1:24 pm

I don’t want to brag, but I’m about to leave these frosty climes for warmer weather — I’ll be spending the next few days in sunny FL at my parents’ “winter home” with all of the sibs, Mr. Magpie, and my parents.  And I am pumped.  See ya, fur; see ya, boots.  I’ll be maxing and relaxing with gleeful abandon in 80 degree warmth.  Time to get packin.  (And I would love to be using these vintage-style roll-a-boards — $280-$320, Steamline Luggage) for that purpose:

My fashion forecast for the coming week?  Enorma-shades (Balenciaga, $360, Forzieri), bold jewelry (love new line Shourouk — $215, Net-A-Porter), breezy caftans (I’m still coveting one of these classic LemLem styles — $248, LemLem), and glam sandals (love K. Jacques — $275, Calypso):

I’d add a bright blue tote (on sale for $395, MyTheresa), and would fill it with beach essentials (Nars Illuminator, $29, Saks; some lip balm — love this stuff! — $22.50, SkinCareRX); and scented sunscreen towelettes ($12 for 10, Sephora):

Oh, and of course, some eye-catching beach towels ($125 apiece, Roberta Roller Rabbit):

Once I have a base tan going (wouldn’t want to make my siblings’ eyes bleed with my paleness by jumping in too early), I’ll hang out in this Missoni-esque bikini ($85 for top, $85 for bottom — Calypso):

I’d wear it with some classic aviators (Ray Ban, $138, Island Surf), a tasseled pendant ($85, ShopLatitude), and this oversized white shirt ($165, LesPommettes):

And then — some fun colorblocked sandals ($79, Bloomingdale’s):

For nights out, I love this easy-on lace dress ($450, Calypso), which I’d punch up with a bold be-gemmed collar necklace ($318, Dannijo):

I like the look finished with these bronze bow-toed tootsies (Valentino, $745, Neiman’s):

I’d punch it up with a bold little pouch clutch.  These PS1 styles are going to absolutely fly off the shelves ($345, Proenza Schouler), and I can’t decide if I prefer it in the orchid or citrus:

Alternately, opt for this slightly less utilitarian style from Michael Kors in similarly fetching colors ($395, Shopbop):

Either would lovely this with bold caftan ($198, Vivre), which could make the transition very easily from laying out to shopping or eating out:

Finish with Barbie pink flats (Tory Burch, $220, Pret-A-Beaute) and a bold statement necklace ($225, Julie Elizabeth):

Alert: today’s your LUCKY day if you are — like me — obsessing over the hand-crafted loveliness of the necklaces featured above.  The darling Julie of Julie Elizabeth has offered one lucky TFM reader this bomb pair of earrings!  All you need to do is LIKE me on Facebook or  follow me on Twitter and then leave a comment on this post below explaining why you want the earrings.  I’ll announce a winner on FRIDAY!  AND if you, like, NEED that necklace above (or anything else from her lovely collection), enjoy 20% off with coupon code: HOLIDAYS.  Yeehaw!

Really, one can never own enough caftans for beach-side/pool-side/inside lounging, so I’ve also got my eye on this geranium-red accented number ($295, Calypso).  Perfection with the Tom Ford Nikitas I’m still coveting ($360, Barneys):

I’d wear it atop this metallic-stripe two-piece ($95, Reiss) –

– and would tuck all of my belongings into this simple woven tote ($79, Mar Y Sol):

On a softer note, how about this violet-hued sweater (on sale for $179, Seaton Surf) with white shorts (T by Alexander Wang, $68, TheOutnet):

The violet sweater above is the perfect accompaniment to the soft scent of Stella ($44 for solid perfume, CosmeticMall) and a gleaming gold watch (Nixon, $200, Shopbop):

I’d finish it off with some wear-anywhere-and-with-anything gold flips (TKEES,$48, Shopbop):

Finally, I’m currently head over heels for this maxi-length Missoni caftan (on sale for $489, Barney’s), which I’d pair with a chunky statement necklace ($32, ShopFurbish) and these adorable gold bow sandals (Prada, on sale for $315, Bergdorf’s):

I’d finish with this woven roll clutch ($105, SuperTrash):

Eee, I can barely contain my excitement!  Anyone else traveling somewhere fun for the holidays?!  Share!   Also: remember to enter my giveaway for the Julie Elizabeth earrings!  Get on it, girl — a nice little Christmas present to yourself.

Black & Blue

In Accessories, Black, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Shoes on December 15, 2011 at 1:09 pm

I’ve been prowling Etsy like it’s my job lately, and cannot get over the wealth of talent and creativity.  As I’ve mentioned many, many times over the past week or so, I’m currently on a mission to create a gallery wall in my bedroom, and so have spent hours searching for eye-catching (affordable) artwork.  These moody cityscapes by Jessica Durrant ($25 each) have absolutely captured my heart.  I must have the black NY cityscape, as I daydream about moving up there and living with my baby sis all.the.time.  (I’ve also been up to NYC twice in the past month — obsessed much?)

The works have more than just a must-have-now effect on me: I’m instantly reaching for my moodiest black and blue get-ups.  While I instantly began to drool over the entire Preen line, which very much centers upon a rich, royal blue and features cool-city-gal styles, I also found a couple of appropriate separates that left me instantly reaching for my wallet.  For starters, I’m thinking of a silky cobalt blouse ($168, Reiss) tucked into a structured, textured skirt (Acne, $510, Browns) and finished with this iconic McQueen scarf (so edgy and yet so elegant in the form of a scarf — $445, Net-A-Porter):

I’d finish with some fun, be-sparkled tootsies (Prada, $520, Bluefly):

I’d finish with chunky gold earrings (Bounkit, $295, Charm and Chain), an oversized gumball rings (House of Harlow, $95, Endless) and a chunky gold link bracelet (Michael Kors, $125, Neiman’s — PSSST, this would make a fab last-minute gift for a mother or mother in law…!):

For something in the more formal vein, I’m absolutely in.love with this silken mini by Elizabeth & James (everything they do just smacks of “coolness” — on sale for $219, Net-A-Porter), which I’d pair with deep blue danglers (Erickson Beamon, $380, Farfetch), black tights, and these unreal deco-styled pumps (ugh…Jimmy Choo, $1,150, Net-A-Porter):

Finish with an architectural ring (only $14! — ASOS), and this geometrical clutchski ($100, John Lewis):

Loves.  Now, I’m going to take a leisurely stroll in la-la land and wax poetic over this houndstooth checked sheath dress (Yves St. Laurent, on sale for around $1,000, Matches), layered beneath an oversized-stone necklace ($25, John Lewis):

– which I’d love to pair with these blue suede platforms ($139, Siren Shoes) and this dream-boat of a bag (O.M.G. — $5,900, Reed Krakoff):

I’d top it all off with the white version of that collarless Old Navy topper I featured yesterday ($74, Old Navy) and a woven knit scarf (on sale for $206, Farfetch) –

– as well as these white fur handwarmers (tried these on at Intermix and was so in.love — they almost make it look like you have fur cuffs on your coat.  Heartsies. — $98, Intermix):

Going back to the inspiration source, Jessica Durrant’s water-colors

how about this artful blouse (Rebecca Taylor, $295, Net-A-Porter) beneath a black fur vest (Karl Donoghue, on super sale for $286, Net-A-Porter — OR check out this faux-fur style on sale for $148 at TheOutnet), black skinnies, and a pair of architectural heels (Alexander Wang, $525, Barney’s):

I’d finish with a pair of bangles in mixed metals ($125 each, Eclektica) and my current obsession du jour — this metallic-thread Stella McCarney tote (O to the MG — $1,150, ShopSavannahs):

For a slightly different take on the look above, check out this Alice and Olivia blouse (on sale for $192, Net-A-Porter), which I’d wear beneath a cropped black blazer ($130, TopShop) with a big statement necklace ($870, Dannijo) and finish with deep blue skinnies and edgy black flats (finally bit the bullet and snapped these up — eee!  Can’t wait til they arrive! — $150, Zappos):

Also intensely craving this navajo-inspired textile skirt (Proenza Schouler, on sale for $464, Farfetch), which I’d pair with a black silky blouse ($275, Tibi) and a big, bold statement necklace introducing a pop of red (man, I am into Dannijo these days! — on sale for $398, Ssense):

I’d finish with these cut-out tootsies ($140, TopShop) and a folded satin clutch (love that the pleating looks like petals — $164, Shirise):

Or, get the whole navajo blue vibe for less with this little clutchski($144, Stefani Bags), which could pair well with a simple LBD –

– Finally, a few separates to mix into the wardrobe to achieve the same effect as shown above.  First, an artful blue and black scarf (on sale for $151, Kelly Wearstler), which could look bomb with a silken blue blouse (on sale for $77, Madewell)

Or, how about test-driving blue (yes, blue) nail lacquer from YSL in the 127 shade ($20, YSL)?  Could look awesome paired with these Bounkit enorma-studs ($295, Charm & Chain):

Loving the blues!

And now, DRUMROLL PLEASE, the winner of my Graphic Image iPhone case giveaway is: Meredith Weinberg.  Woot woot!  I admit to an act of favoritism on my end — I had every intention of randomly selecting an entrant, and then Meredith’s sweet post literally brought tears to my eyes.  I read it aloud to Mr. Magpie on the way back from a Christmas cocktail party, and suddenly my voice was wavering.  You were too kind in all of your comments, and the thought of your dear mother (would love to meet Barb) showing up unannounced to offer you the support that only a mother can really hit home.  CONGRATS, Missy! I’ll email you so we can get you set up with your new iPhone case.

And, because I don’t want to be TOO unfair, I also randomly selected an additional winner, who will get a treat or two from TheFashionMagpie as well, including a set of the neon hair ties featured in my Let’s Get Physical post that Emi-Jay has very kindly provided to us.  The winner of this gift is Jen Browne of the Little Black Shop.  Hurray for all!

A Latte Love

In Accessories, Black, Fresh Combos, Jewelry, Leopard, Neutrals, Pop of Red, Shoes, Winter Weather, Work Wear on December 14, 2011 at 1:20 pm

I guess I’m suffering from a bad case of fashion A.D.D. this year, because I’ll go from wanting BOLD NEON INTENSITY {see yesterday’s post} to sophisticated black-and-tan at the drop of a hat.  But — that’s fashion, isn’t it?  Reinvention?  So, today: my top picks for the urban, mid-week workerbee in a latte palette (a brown, black, cream blend).  {I’ll admit to a healthy dose of styling inspiration from Ms. Pippa Middleton, whose approachable, working-woman style is perfection.} Let’s begin with this darling, affordable bow-front dress ($45, Target), which I’d pair with pearl enorma-studs ($150, Mariam Haskell), black tights, and some booties (LOVE these bow-backed versions — my little sassy sissy owns a similar bow-bedecked pair she snagged from Kate Spade, and gets about a million compliments on them per second — $104, Endless):

I’d pair with a bold, collarless topper (isn’t this inexpensive Old Navy style BOMB?!  Love the lining — $69, Old Navy):

In terms of arm candy?  Lots of gold trinket-y bracelets, including this link bracelet ($32, Bauble Bar) and this typewriter-letter watch (love it — $24, Urban Outfitters) –

And then maybe this set of Mulberry bangles as the finishing, clanking touch ($300, Mulberry):

I’d stuff all of my work essentials, including some smart-looking glasses (currently coveting Selima Optique’s geek chic styles — $360, Selima), a tortoise iPhone cover ($25, J. Crew), and a hot pink wallet (check it out — you can get this bad-boy hot-stamped with your initials in gold foil!!! — $107, I Love BLVD) into this work-appropriate tote (with a lil edge for good measure — $118, Navoh):

Or, how about this cool gal brown leather dress (Ralph Lauren, on sale for $598, Net-A-Porter), which I’d pair with a sleek black chain-link necklace ($198, ShopTwigs), black tights, and a fierce wedge (Rachel Zoe, on sale for $189, Intermix):

I’d finish with a mini pony-hair cross-body (EEEEE!!!! I need this, and it’s on sale!!!!! — $229, Barney’s):

{I love you, little guy.}  Next up: how much do you love the textural contrast of this cable-knit skirt (Marc by Marc Jacobs, $168, Shopbop) with a black silky blouse (Miu Miu, on sale for $525, Net-A-Porter — although Equipment has amazing, industry-standard blouses — i.e., everyone in the fashion world owns and loves ‘em — for around $200/pop) and some bold sparkly studs ($145, D0loris Petunia — and W.O.W., check out her entire collection of one-of-a-kind marvels, especially these, which I sweat in a serious way):

I’d finish with these amazing, and very impractical, booties (Zanotti, on sale for $597, Net-A-Porter).  I’m not normal one for fashion folly (hm, maybe that’s a bit of a bold claim…), but these are just too awesome to overlook.  And — while we’re in la-la land, why not the Reed Krakoff boxer bag?! — $1,090, Neiman’s):

I’d echo the glitz of the earrings with this amazing cuff ($645, Dannijo):

Finish with this dramatic red wool cape (uh-woahhhh — $671, MyWardrobe):

Finally, I love this sophisticated box stationery set ($48, Stripe and Field).  The unexpected color linings make this set uber-chic.

I like the idea of curling up at home with this knit cape (sold out at J. Crew proper, but still available via Net-A-Porter for $200), some orange cabochon studs (KJL, $99, Zappos), a printed scarf (Theodora & Callum, $175, Otte NY), some skinnies, and these awesome printed black-and-brown flats ($250, Pretty Ballerinas):

Lovely, lovely.  We’ll see where I fall on the color spectrum tomorrow.

Don’t forget to enter my giveaway for one of these iPhone cases from Graphic Image!  Check out the instructions on the bottom of my Ups & Downs post.  Entries are due today by midnight, and a winner will be announced tomorrow.  Want to order something now?  You can use coupon code GIFTS for 20% off your purchase starting today!

That Boom Boom Pow

In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Fierce, Jewelry, Pop of Red on December 13, 2011 at 10:58 am

Today, on this cold, mid-December Tuesday, all I wanna do is have some fun.  {Yeah, I said it.  Sheryl Crow.}  In TFM terms, this means — throw on something bold/neon and therefore mildly inappropriate for a winter day and strut around like I know what’s up.  Something with a little edge, a little street cred (…?) — something that channels the gutsy energy of this Nicole Cohen print ($325), which I — incidentally — really must figure out how to purchase soon-ish.  {Imagine it against a gray wall in an otherwise elegantly appointed study.  BAM.}

Of course, anything by Jenni Kayne would fit this bill, but since I’m not made of cashiola, I’m day-dreaming of more affordable luxuries, like this reversible clutchski I found at Hammocks & High Tea (I featured the chevron-lined style yesterday, but check out the variation shown below in a different, equally-as-cool color/lining combo — $169, H&HT):

Fierce.  I’d rock it with a few of these tasseled bracelets, layered with other gold bangles ($125, Latitude):

How awesome?!  Makes me just about as happy as these wellies ($115, Joules), with their boom-boom-pow contrast color under-lining:

Love a little hidden surprise like that, an effect that could be similarly achieved by clustering these colorful little 6×6 canvases ($45 a pop, Him and Her) in an unexpected nook at home.  {Thanks to Erika Brechtel of Small Shop Studio, I’m on a mad dash to put together a gallery wall in our cozy Georgetown apartment, so I’ve dog-eared about 34 billion different prints, canvases, and other goodies to hang.  Erika, neither my wallet nor Mr. Magpie thank you for planting this seed.}

Oh, and P.S. — check out the rest of the unbelievable Him & Her collection while you’re at it.  This one is awesome, and would look fab with a white and navy bedroom palette.  While drooling over happy color combos, check out the bold color contrast on this mod-style shift ($693, Costume National).  Now, this would be ideal with this dark swan of a necklace by Tom Binns, though I’m almost too embarrassed to post the price… ($2,135, Net-A-Porter):

I’d wear with simple black pumps (Pour La Victoire, $250, Zappos) and a calf-hair clutchski ($78, C. Wonder):

A lucite bangle or two ($65, Pret-A-Beaute) = the only accent you need:

Speaking of hidden surprises, how sick is the BOLD yellow lining on this DVF blazer ($585, Net-A-Porter)?  I’d wear it with the sleeves rolled up and finish with a funky scarf ($24, Modcloth), some big studs (Bounkit, $295, Charm & Chain), black skinnies, and some funky little flats ($300, By Larin):

A bright blue bag is the only way to round things out, and I like this textured clutcheroo ($143, Clare Vivier):

If you’re not so much into the neons, never fear.  I got yo back.  Check out this geranium red/orange polka dot topper (on sale for $683, Marni).  Pair with big, deeply glamorous earrings ($233, Elizabeth Cole), dark denim skinnies, and these awesome, fierce skull sloafers (check out that awesome contrast grosgrain strip on the heel!  — $325, Del Toro):

I’d finish it all with the classic J. Crew Edie ($238, J. Crew), which I continue to covet, and and a gauzy white scarf to avoid looking too…structured ($195, Chan Luu):

The icing on the cake?  This slightly edgy, slightly refined cuff (Fallon, on sale for $169, Barney’s):

Yee-haw.  No better way to banish the midweek doldrums.  Another great way?  Enter my giveaway for these awesome iPhone cases from GRAPHIC IMAGE.  Check out the end of yesterday’s post for details.  You only have one more day to enter!  A winner will be announced on THURSDAY!  Woo!

Ups & Downs

In Accessories, Dream Wear, Fur, Jewelry, Shoes on December 12, 2011 at 1:18 pm

Lately, I’ve had the itch to do some interior redeco at home, and chevron rugs/prints are really calling my name.  The print is featured heavily in interior designer Ana Fortunes’ work, and it always catches my eye.

{images from Ana Fortunes}

I also spotted the print in the home of MadeByGirl’s Jen Ramos, and lived for it:

Finally, I wept with envy when I drooled over these shots of Ana Fortunes’ own home — note prominence of chevron:

{images from Ana Fortunes}

This has in turn spawned an obsession with all things zig-zagged, and it just.won’t.stop.  For example, I must own this monogrammed clutch ($50, Luxury Monograms):

And if not that (or rather, in addition to that), this bomb REVERSIBLE style from Hammocks & High Tea (Love, with a capital L — $169, Hammocks & High Tea):

I like the idea of maintaining the visual rhythm with a chevron necklace ($36, BGBG) layered beneath a black blazer ($100, TopShop) and atop a bow-front blouse ($142, TheOutnet), skinnies (as mentioned many-a-times, I like all J. Brand styles), and some studded sloafers (I find these a bit more wearable than the fancy pants Jeffrey Campbell pair I featured a week ago — $325, Loeffler Randall):

Heartsies.  Finish with a red mani (yes, I’m back on that wagon, and I still love Essie’s LOLLIPOP, which I wore to my holiday cocktail party this past weekend), a simple and elegant watch ($525, A Plus R Store), and a signet ring (currently on my TDF, must-have shortlist — $398, Sarah Chloe):

And, on the other wrist, GOTTA have this oversized bow bangle ($68, LeifShop):

I’m envisioning those Loeffler Randall tootsies resting atop a chevron rug of my own.  And while Jonathan Adler is sort of the kingpin when it comes to chevron rugs, his run a bit on the pricey side (the 2×3 is $165…), so I’ve been hunting for more affordable versions.  This 5×3 size is only $77 (at Wayfair), and I really.really. want it.

{Want something more colorful?  Check out the ETSY storefront Arbor Road for some boldly colored chevron rugskis.  Love.}  Wouldn’t the black style above look bomb next to a couch juged up with some patterned pillows ($90/pop, Hammocks & High Tea)?

Almost like an M.C. Escher print.  Me likey.  Of course, one can’t think of zig-zags without longing for Missoni, and while I (still) await my shipment of Missoni for Target items, I will dream about throwing on this little knit mini dress ($866, MyWardrobe), which would be perfection with black tights (I wear Spanx or J. Crew exclusively), a pair of booties (House of Harlow, $384, MyWardrobe — or check out these ankle-breaking Zanottis for a cool $795), and these textured sunnies ($195, Nordstrom):

I’d finish with a chevron necklace (um, amazing…and can’t beat that price — $34, Modcloth), and, since we’re dreaming here, this oh-so-perfect, wear-with-everything Fendi tote ($2,490, Barney’s):

I’d top it all off with this chevron fur coat (and check out that sweet lining! — Marc by Marc Jacobs, on sale in limited sizes for only $349, Shopbop and in a few more sizes for $417 at Saks):

For something a hair more affordable than the outfit above, consider this Missoni-esque scarf (Yarnz, $195, Kirna Zabete), paired with your standard go-to outfit and some bold red flats ($165, Pretty Ballerinas):

For something on the dressier end, I like this sequinned skirt ($270, All Saints) with an elegant black blouse (Miu Miu, on sale for a still steep $525, Net-A-Porter), black tights, and some black platformed pumps (this inexpensive pair caught my eye for its Charlotte Olympia-style platformed sole — $68, Victoria’s Secret):

Goes perfectly with a set of bangles ($100 apiece, Boutique To You) and this eye-catching, oversized-kiss-lock clutch ($495, Latitude):

Given the glitziness of the skirt above, should probably be filled with these sparklettes on NYE ($12 for 8, Catbird):

While on the subject of festive-gear, I saw and swooned over this zig-zagged little clutchski ($200, Liberty).  Wouldn’t it be the perfect way to offset an LBD?!

For casual-wear, I like this inexpensive chevron tee (on sale for $19, Old Navy) paired with a funky statement piece (love the drama of this style — $216, Patch NYC), black skinnies, and a pair of bow-toed bronzed flats (Lanvin, on sale for $416, Net-A-Porter):

I’d finish with a cherry red portfolio clutch ($425, Camille Zarsky):

And, finally, for some reason, these items together make me very happy: a chevron pouch ($28, iomoi), a funky necklace ($145, Pound Jewelry), and a monogrammed iPhone cover in a zig-zag print ($52, Rouge):

AND — do NOT forget to enter my giveaway for these awesome iPhone cases!  All you need to do is leave a comment on this post describing/identifying the most important phone call you’ve ever had in your life.  I’ve already read and cherished the entries so far.  Note that I’ll randomly select and announce a winner this Thursday, December 15th!  Also, if you could be a doll and like me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter, I will count your entry TWICE, which will increase your odds of winning.  And — if you can’t wait until then — you can use coupon code GIFTS for 20% off your purchase starting today!

Fit for a Queen

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Fresh Combos, Home Decor, Jewelry, Romantic, Shoes on December 8, 2011 at 11:03 am

Today, I’m loving the good ol’ pink and gold combo — that regal, queen-like combination that makes me feel oh-so-happy and oh-so-girly at the same time.  The onset of this sudden color craving can be attributed to Jen Ramos’ GORGEOUS wall canvas ($400, Cocoa & Hearts), which I so desperately want for my bedroom:

So visually appealing, n’est-ce pas?  I’ll recreate the look for less (or supplement the prints above) with gold and pink accent pieces in the home, like a pair of metallic thread pillows ($32 each, Crate & Barrel):

Then, atop a ladylike console ($1,200, Furbish), I’d place little pink and gold knick-knacks, like these awesome gold ball candles ($8.95 apiece, Crate and Barrel) and one of these pretty little glass-ettes (check out the awesome colors they come in!  SWOON! — $44, GlassyBaby):

I’d also add this pretty pink-printed tray ($20, Zhush) and fill it with little gold doo-dads and jewelry pieces — a gold pen (I’ve long wanted one of these Cross brand classics, $151, Amazon), a gold watch (I like almost every watch that Michael Kors puts out, but this jet-setter has been on my lust-list for years now — $250, Shopbop), gold flower earrings (Alex Monroe, on sale for $120, Net-A-Porter — I wear a similar style I snagged at J. Crew several times a week!), and other little gold trinkets (I’ve heard people collect gold keys, and I love that!):

I’d probably also throw a set of gold-lined cards ($18 for set of 8, Rifle Paper) on the table and stow stamps, pens, and paper clips alongside them in this shallow feather dish ($45, Jayson Home and Garden):

Finally, I’d keep business cards and other odds ‘n ends in this funky little camel pouch ($98, Virginia Johnson):

For technology needs, I’d store my iPad in this bold pink case ($50, Net-A-Porter), would juge up my drab desktop with a paisley pink mini-mouse ($18, MacBeth Collection), and would add a little 24 karat sparkle to my day with gold (!) earbuds ($69, SkullCandy):

I’d keep my iPhone in one of these awesome, personalizable cases ($60, Graphic Image):

Important: do you want one of the iPhone cases above?!  WELL, it’s your lucky day!  The fab folks over at GraphicImage will be gifting one lucky FashionMagpie reader with one of their iPhone cases!  All you need to do is leave a comment on this post describing/identifying the most important phone call you’ve ever had in your life.  Off-the-wall responses encouraged — I love hearing about y’all.  I’ll randomly select and announce a winner next Thursday, December 15th!  Also, if you could be a doll and like me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter, I will count your entry TWICE and will therefore — POOF — increase your odds of winning.  And — if you can’t wait until then — you can use coupon code GIFTS for 20% off your purchase starting today!

And — back to the subject: the interior of my desk and bureau drawers would look oh-so-lovely lined with this gold chevron liner ($25, Hammocks and High Tea), don’t you think?!  I’d feel like I was shopping whenever getting dressed!

For self, this HOT pink Vanessa Bruno topper is un.believable ($1,785, Matches), which would POP with a bright pink-red-white scarf ($195, Virginia Johnson):

Perfection with gold pumps ($98, Endless) and a woven tote (Anya Hindmarch, $1,200, Net-A-Porter):

Don’t forget to finish with a bold swipe of hot pink lipstick ($24, Kate Spade — love the packaging!):

Or, check out this fantastic gold jacket (Stella McCartney, $2,325, Net-A-Porter), which would look lovely against these cluster earrings ($70, Kendra Scott):

Ah-mazing with hot pink gloves ($87, Forzieri) and a hot pink clutch/wallet ($130, Net-A-Porter):

For a cocktail party out, do you d.i.e. like I do over this affordable gold thread strapless number ($105, Jane Norman), which I would pair with this ladylike necklace ($155, Kendra Scott):

Finish with these hot pink phenoms ($945, Barney’s) by — who else?! — Louboutin — and that bow clutch I’ve been swooning all over (on sale for $68, J. Crew):

If you prefer a lighter touch, why not pair a LGD (little gold dress) with this fun/funky little book clutch ($325, Kate Spade) and some soft pink tootsies (Sergio Rossi, $715, Intermix)?

Finally, and this is the real meat of the post — I just am dying over this hot pink Balenciaga bag ($1,695, Balenciaga).  It is so loud and impractical, it’s almost offensive.  But fab at the same time.  I’d wear it with these lovely, ladylike gold flats (on sale for $207, Loeffler Randall):

Don’t forget, chic peas — all you have to do to win one of those pretty little Graphic Image iPhone cases is to leave a comment on this post telling the story of your most important phone call you’ve ever made/received.  A winner will be announced next Thursday, December 15th.  And if you’d be a little sugar-plum, like me on Facebook or follow me on Twitta, and I’ll enter you TWICE into the running.  Woot woot.  Hello, Thursday!

Ooh la la!

Let’s Get Physical

In Accessories, Brights!, Gym Gear, Intimates, Shoes on December 7, 2011 at 10:58 am

I try not to let myself get too frazzled by the calorie frenzy that is the holidays {all things in moderation!}, but the food prospect for the next few weeks, which are jam-packed with cocktail parties, cookie exchanges, teas, holiday lunches, and office parties, has led me to really ante up at the gym.  And one of the best ways to incentivize myself is to buy new workout gear, snap up loads of thick, glossy magazines, and invest in a new song-list.  At the top of my gym rat shopping list:

Fun, brightly-colored sports bras.  I normally LOVE the rainbow of brights that the C9 for Target sports bras come in, but I saw and instantly loved these neon bad boys from Victoria’s Secret ($17, Victoria’s Secret):

I’d wear these beneath my classic white tees (I buy mine in bulk — boys’ Hanes tees), and pair with my favorite Nike leggings ($35, Nike), some bold kicks (check these affordable Reeboks out! — on sale for $4o, Zappos), and — for dashing from the car to the gymeroo — a gauzy, boldly-colored scarf ($195, Virginia Johnson):

Can I just tell you, though, how much I love my Nike spandex?!  I bought my first pair just before I studied abroad in Lyon, France, during the third year of college.  That was six years ago.  I remember it well because all of the Frenchies thought I was Loosy Goosy / trying to flaunt my curves inappropriately in public, and I quickly learned that I would just need to change into them at the gym.  That original pair (essentially antiques at this point) still exists and is still featured 1-2 times a week in my workout gear rotation.  Can you believe it?!  They are the best-made article of clothing I own!  At any rate, with the above looks, I’d stuff all my gear in this canvas Anya tote (love mine — $150, Net-A-Porter):

Finish with bright peds ($15 for pack of 6, Bloomingdale’s) –

and, for outdoor exercise, some light-weight fleece gloves (on sale for $10, Old Navy):

And, though I already mentioned the Anya Hindmarch tote above, I also considered this snakeskin-print nylon tote ($190, Net-A-Porter), which I’d clearly proceed to litter with millions of hair ties and bobby pins.  I’ve heard good things about the Emi-Jay line ($12 for set of 5 in the neon colors, Emi-Jay), and I’m also inclined to support the line because it was created by two entrepreneurial teens, and they give a portion of their proceeds to charity!

I’d also stuff in an eco-friendly water-bottle.  I’m currently coveting one of these bkr bottles ($28 apiece, Bkr), which, the site reports, are “a statement against a disposable world.”  Love the colors they come in and the elegant design:

In my opinion, the easiest way to keep on top of your workout regimen is to keep a food/exercise journal.  That way, you really have to be honest with yourself and hold yourself accountable.  I use an app on my iPhone called MyFitnessPal, which permits you to input your weight, add any foods you eat, and log in the exercise you completed in a given day, and then it works out the total number of calories you ingested/burned.  However, I used to do it the old fashioned way — hand-written, in a journal like one of these Archie Grand notebooks ($10, Amazon — but see the entire collection here).   And who doesn’t like a neon pen to get the job done ($20, Sid Mashburn)?

I’m also loving/hating the bright colors that these Free City sweats ($148, Shopbop) come in.  I say “hate” because I know I will never drop $150 on a pair of sweatpants.  But I want them.  I love the cropped style.  And the color options are hizzity hot.  I’d pair with a bold but breathable parka topper for outdoor runs ($138, Athleta):

I know I featured the hot-pink-and-black shoes above, but these blue Nikes ($64, ShoeBacca) also caught my eye — and I am, after all, a fierce Nike devotee.  I currently wear their “Free Runs” ($90, Zappos), which are impossibly lightweight.  I love them for running around hilly D.C., though I’ve heard they are hell if you have ankle problems — they provide very little support.

I love Nike’s new retro styling.  So awesome.  The above pair look like they need to be worn with a vintage-style sweatshirt, like this faded Toms style ($44, Tom’s), a pair of black leggings, and a white scarf (Chan Luu’s have an ideal weight to them — $195, Chan Luu):

Balla with an athletic watch, like this golden Adidas style (on sale for $29, Adidas):

Finally, I load up my iPod with up-tempo jams.  I use the Apple shuffle mini ($49), which clips to my waistband and is all around awesomely light-weight and durable.  Plus, love the fun colors it comes in (mine is pink — duh).

I’m also constantly buying new, snazzy earbuds for it — a cheap way to make myself happy, and I somehow manage to lose them all the time.  Check these funky printed styles out at MacBeth Collection for only $14!

Currently playing on my list?

I know, it’s a random mix, but it’ll get your heart pumping.  Promise.  And when I’m in a chiller/emo mood (especially on long runs), I listen to either Etta James or Miranda Lambert’s newest record, “Four the Record,” which is absolutely phenomenal.  Her best yet.  No, really.  I die over it  I listened to it about 7 days straight on repeat at work via Spotify after it came out.  I love “Fine Tune,” and, as my little sis put it, “Same Old You” is like modern day Patsy Cline.  UH-may-zing.

When I’m on super slim-down mode {as I am for the holiday party one of my besties and I are throwing this Saturday!, to which I am wearing this dress and a pair of amazing lace-accented Louboutins I only pull out for special occasions}, I cut out most carbs and try to load up on vegetables.  For this reason, I’m intrigued by this Kale, Spinach, and Pear Smoothie bloggerina Sterling Style swears by, and may just try it tomorrow, post-work-out:

Wrapped, Part IV: Gifts for the Mr. Magpies

In Accessories, Gifts!, Home Decor, Magpie Men, Shoes on December 6, 2011 at 11:57 am

OK, here it is: the last installment of my WRAPPED series.  {Check out Parts I, II, and III in case you missed them!}  Today, I’m showcasing a few of the many, many items I considered buying for Mr. Magpie this holiday season.  Mr. Magpie, as it turns out, is paradoxically both the easiest person in the world to shop for — and the hardest.  He’s easy in his varied and extensive interests — he loves cooking, drinking, reading, and all things sports-related; he has an interest in looking sharp and well-dressed; he appreciates the finer things in life {whether a Mason Pearson hairbrush or upscale shaving lather}; and he always wants the newest, coolest gadget.  In short, you’d think I’d have the easiest time figuring out just what to get him.  But…no.  He’s difficult in that he has the most exacting taste I’ve ever seen in a man.  He notices details that I don’t even pick up on.  So.  There’s that.

Despite his nit-pickiness {something I candidly admire — I don’t mean to cast that discretion in a negative light}, I know he’d gravitate towards one of these two woolen bowtie (first — $65, Read’s Clothing, second — $45, Starboard Clothing), with their undone preppy vibe:

{J. Crew has a semi-similar version for a touch less — $42 — available here.}  If your man is not the bow-tie wearing type, consider one of these artfully crafted Otis James neckties, similarly interesting in its texture ($110, Otis James Nashville):

{Love all of the Otis James details — he hand paints the lining of his bow-ties!  Ah-mazing.}  Any of the above would look pretty slick with a pair of cool kid sunnies, like these Warby Parkers ($95, Warby Parker), or these ultra-cool Persols (the exact style Steve McQueen wore back in the day — $310, J. Crew):

Cool as a cucumber.  Other slick accent pieces for the well-heeled man?  These leather card wallets ($140, Makr), which feel uber-masculine:

Or this gun-embossed leather classic (handmade in Brooklyn, NY! — $88, Sir Jack’s):

or, if he’s more of the money-clip type, this cheeky Jack Spade clip is just.awesome (you can get on that reads “Bacon,” “Dough,” or “Bones” on the side — $65, Jack Spade):

I feel like a man who carries a money clip is a man who wears a spread collar.  And I love a spread collar.  For whatever reason, I feel like discerning, well-dressed men gravitate towards it, and it doesn’t help that the vast majority of Ralph Lauren’s beautiful Purple Label line feature it.  I spotted these beautiful spread-collar formal shirts on sale at Mr. Porter ($95 for lavender stripe, Mr. Porter; $97.50 for blue stripe, Mr. Porter), but was bummed to find they’d sold out of Mr. Magpie’s size.  He owns several Canali suits, so I’m sure he would have adored adding these to the collection.

They would look like perfection beneath a navy blazer, especially one spruced up with these fox-head gold buttons (how cool?! — around $100 for set of 10, Benson & Clegg — but check out all of their awesome designs!):

Oh, and PS — when braces come back into style, I will be happy as a clam.  I keep telling Mr. Magpie that I really want to “make that trend happen again,” but there have been no takers…yet.  (I may have to try a new tactic: “Think Michael Douglas in Wall Street.  Eh?  Eh?”)  Start the trend yourself by offering your guy a refined set from Albert Thurston ($75-$95, Sir Jack’s):

A man in braces should probably have a clean shave.  Hence, how about a vintage shaving kit?!  I mean, seriously.  If I walked into the bathroom of a young man and he had a classic shaving brush, I’d be seriously curious about him ($100, Sir Jack’s):

I’d accompany with upscale shaving products — Mr. Magpie is partial to the Jack Black line.  Try this grooming trio (face buff and “beard lube” — $52, BeautyBar):

In a slightly different vein, I often gift Mr. Magpie boxers and socks in his stocking.  He — strangely enough, and of his own volition — has an extensive and impressive sock collection, and he knows how to rock them.  So much so that when he was invited to attend a televised “Town Hall” meeting that President Obama held at the Newseum in downtown D.C., the producers had originally situated Mr. Magpie front and center {obviously because he is soooo good looking, duh} such that he would have been in every single shot of the taping, but then — ALAS — the powers that be spotted his bold yellow socks peeking out from beneath his khakis, and immediately moved him to the side.  They thought too many people would be focusing on his excellent sock-wear.  Regardless, I discovered this upscale line of men’s socks {nerd alert} and am not sure which pattern I’ll buy him yet ($30, Hook and Albert), but these are a nice little addition to the standard fare:

Finally, I’ve given Mr. Magpie a few sets of cufflinks over the past few years, but thought that these funky subway token styles would make an offbeat-cool gift for a well-dressed hubby (they have sets from NYC, Chicago, and Boston — $90, Rain Collection):

For the foodster/booze-hound, Mr. Magpie just discovered a line of Bloody Mary mix ($9.95, Charleston Mix) in his latest edition of Garden & Gun and was literally drooling all over the place in the hopes of trying it.  He takes his Bloody Marys with gin rather than vodka, so I might spring for a nice bottle of upscale ginny for him (he likes Aviation, which goes for around $35):

I would probably bundle it with some other goodies, like McClure’s pickles ($13/jar, Market Hall Foods), which have been featured on the uber-addictive FoodNetwork program “Best Thing I Ever Ate”:

Excellent stocking stuffer, although I’ll be the first to admit that I may be the first with my hands in the jar — I have the biggest “vinegar tooth.”  (Que?)  No, really.  I love anything briny and vinegared — bring on the pickled beets!  You might also consider bundling some fine alcohols with these awesome vintage liquor bottles ($150 for set of 3, Chic Shop LA) –

Very Roger Sterling.  If he’s more of a booze-on-the-go guy (ha, terrifying thought), these needlepoint flasks caught my eye at a recent holiday Christmas bazaar ($65 for regular designs, $100 for monogrammed styles — Smathers & Branson):

{Useless side note: the founder of this company — the BRANSON — is the son of my high school English teacher.  I’m so cool and famous.}  The flask featured above reminds me that if your man is a die-hard Southern pride type, you should definitely check out these awesome vintage-style wall prints, which are categorized by state ($40 apiece, The Old Try):

But back to food/booze, what man doesn’t love steak?  Well, all vegetarian men.  So maybe that’s unfair.  But — Mr. Magpie is to meat as Mrs. Magpie is to sparkly, uncomfortable shoes.  Deep-rooted, potentially unhealthy addictions there.  We were lucky enough to receive an oustandingly gorgeous set of wood-handled steak knives as a wedding gift.  Ours are from  L’Aguiole (classic), but they look strikingly similar to this set by Opinel ($288, ShopTerrain), which would be a very savvy gift for a foodie:

This would be ideal along with a yummy Argentinian malbec or a big cab sauv {for the wine drinkers}, or a pricy pair of steaks from an upscale organic butcher.  {Mr. Magpie and I buy the vast majority of our meat from Wagshal’s or from a few favored vendors at the local farmers’ markets.}  Looking for other foodstuffs?  You will die and go to heaven dining on anything ordered from Surry Farms, but especially the Surry-ano Ham.  I also often purchase Niman Ranch bacon, which is becoming increasingly widely available and is…delicious.  Finally, you might consider buying your man the manliest, best cookbook ever — James Villas’ Pig ($24, Amazon):

Don’t worry — it’s not too masculine for us gals.  We’ve made tons of recipes from here, and all have been finger-licking delicious.  Yum, my stomach is grumbling just thinking about his pork and dumplings, which Mr. Magpie and I made and devoured before promptly entering food euphoria.  O.M.G.  But before we stray to far afield from knives, I wanted to show-case these black stainless steel-edged knives, which seem motto bene for the male cook ($80-$120, A+R Store):

And — if your man is a huntsman — check out these hand-crafted, artisanal knives from the Williams Knife Co.  You are sure to be cool girlfriend/wife/fiancee of the century for getting him something as awesomely bespoke.  This gift may go well with one of these vintage duck decoys, available from Cococozy for a steep $190 a quack (ha) — or spend some time hunting on Etsy/eBay, as I’m convinced you could find something similar for far less.

Also something a “cool” gal would do for her guy?  Have “Thanks, Bro” deliver him beer and beef jerky.  They have all kinds of hilarious combinations that are probably better suited for guy-to-guy gifting humor, but if you’re one of those “guys gals,” you could totally pull it off.  For example, you can have the beer delivered in a Top Gun case or a Mets hat, and the instructions indicate: “Write your thank you note here, bro. Don’t forget to sign it cleverly.”  {So bro-tastic.}  The “You’re a Sissy, Bro” package includes a six-pack of Buckler.  Haha.  Since I am decidedly NOT a guy’s gal — in fact, the antithesis — I would probably lean towards something more traditional.  I considered, for example, stuffing these saber notecards in Mr. Magpie’s stocking, because they remind me of the UVA emblem ($18, Jack & Lulu):

Alternately, these “Forgetful Gentleman” notecard sets {which come in cigar cases! –$25 and up, Forgetful Gentleman} are just manly enough to make stationery a semi-cool present.

Speaking of cigar cases — if your guy is a smoker {not that I advocate this…}, check out this cool-looking tobacco pouch ($125, Kenton Sorenson):

I can see it looking stately atop a leather-topped desk {similar to the one I ruined as a child in my father’s study by affixing dozens of stickers to the top, much to my father’s eternal disappointment} in a man’s study, which might also feature a monogrammed plaid blanket ($199, William-Sonoma) — another good gift.

And, finally, I feel that Mr. Magpie would approve of these leather iPhone backs from start-up Valentine Goods ($25, Valentine Goods), even though he’s exercise a strict no-cover/no-case policy for years now:

Oh, wait — one more “and finally.”  I am absolutely dying over these handsome garment bags, which Mr. Magpie would put to great use ($515, Moore & Giles):

So — what will you be getting the men in your life this holiday season?!

Jingle Bell Rock

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Bombshell, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Glitter, Jewelry, Shoes, Winter Weather on December 5, 2011 at 4:08 pm

One of my favorite moments in recent cinematic history has to be the Jingle Bell Rock performance from Mean Girls.  I mean.  Hilar.  I hope I can come up with some excuse to recreate that dance at some point in my life.  For the time being, however, I’ll just latch on to the song behind it and share a few sparkly, jingly-jangly pieces that have me thinking about the song all season long.

First — actual jingle bells, in the form of this festive wreath ($50, Williams-Sonoma).  Wouldn’t it be adorable on your door?!

I’ll take that as the inspiration point for the rest of the shimmery glimmery goodness below, starting with this outrageous shimmery number by D&G ($1,615, MyTheresa).  With something this high-wattage, all you need are some simple black pumps (Louboutin, $595, Saks), a black fur topper (this uber-luxe Maison Martin Margiela version is the stuff of dreams — on sale for $1,927, Net-A-Porter):

Woah, mama.  I would finish with a simple swipe of red lipstick (I love my YSL colors — $30, Saks) and false eyelashes (love the drama!  I use Laura Mercier’s kit for formal events, because they don’t look super trashy/fake and have just enough curl in them — $18, Sephora):

– oh, and a classic black clutch (sorry I’m breaking the bank today, but this classy bowed style has my heart — Valentino, $765, MyTheresa):

For something a bit more wallet-friendly, kick yourself into holiday gear with these sparkly nail lacquers (Essie’s “Pure Pearlfaction” and “Set in Stones” — $7, Amazon):

Or — consider glitzing up your LBD (the retro-styled number below is perfection; I’m very into volume these days — Kage, $591, Boutique1 — but this simple, slinky cut-out style by Rory Beca also caught my eye for holiday get-togethers) with these sparkly drops (remind me of snowflakes! — Erickson Beamon, $430, Net-A-Porter) and some glitzy tootsies (only $99! — check out the color selections at Piperlime and Amazon):

I’d cinch the waist with a silver bow-accented belt ($38, WHBM) and finish with this deco-style clutch (Moyna, $188, Nordstrom):

Check.plus.  I don’t know if I’m just lusting for the impossible after a weekend of high-glitz life in NYC {love the energy and style up there!}, but I’m also seriously coveting this pricy, embellished Farah Kahn number ($1,164, Farfetch), which I’d wear with these rocking danglers (Philippe Audibert, $130, Net-A-Porter):

Love the art deco vibe.  I’d finish with simple black pumps (D&G, on sale for $178, MyWardrobe) and a black box clutch.  My dream clutchski would be this Elie Saab wonder (love the glossy gold clasp — $912, Boutique1), but Kotur also has some eye-catching lovelies for about half the price!

Love.  In a serious, intense way.  Are you equally smitten, but could do without the price tag?  Get the art deco style for less with this clamshell clutch (on sale for $120, French Connection) and these sequinned pumps ($88, WHBM):

Now, I know I’ve been featuring SO many glitzy, glammy, glittery styles, so I hope you’ll bear with me while I swoon over one more — the Alice & Olivia Ritchie, which just went on sale at Saks (you’re welcome! — $330, Saks), which would look unbelievable with a pair of Janna Conner drops ($58, Max & Chloe) and a bold red topper (I am speechless at the sight of this bell-shaped Miu Miu style — $2,085, MyTheresa — but the J. Crew Double Cloth Metro coat is probably more realistic at $298…and equally eye-catching):

I’d wear it with these unexpected heels (the chunky heel made me pause for a minute, but they’re too fab to pass up — Louboutin, $1,195, Net-A-Porter) and a sleek and slender clutch (DVF, $540, Matches):

And, finally, two items I just want, period.  I’m sure I’d find a bajillion and one reasons.  First, the Alexander Wang Adriel clutch, which just went on sale at Barney’s ($289, Barney’s), and second, this futuristic-looking minimalista-chic cuff (34, Bauble Bar):

Things I Like Today.

In Accessories, Black, Brights!, Glitter, Intimates, Jewelry, Leopard, Shoes on December 2, 2011 at 8:44 am

It’s FRIDAY!  And I am on my way to the BIG APPLE for a glammed out weekend with my sissy and her BF and Mr. Magpie and it’s going to be so.much.fun.  (Can you tell from the run-on that I’m just an eensy bit excited?)  In the spirit of this exhilaration, I am too unfocused to provide a streamlined, themed post, and will instead provide a laundry list of items I love today, in a provisional, meaningless arrangement.

First — just call me a wild child, because not only did I experiment with dark nails (Essie’s “Carry On,” $8, Target) earlier this week, but I also snapped up Deborah Lippmann’s glittered Boom Boom Pow color ($20, BeautyBridge):

I know, I’m a lame-o.  It took me this.long to step outside the red/pink family.  Staying in that sequinned vein, I kind of, desperately, need this topper for festive, less-dressy holiday occasions (Vince, $435, Saks) –

– although — shhh! — managed to find a short-sleeved knock-off (looks much better and non-cropped in person, I promise — $35) for a fraction at H&M, and will wear it over a long-sleeved black turtleneck ($29, J. Crew), with a big statement necklace (still loving this classic J. Crizzle style — $150, J. Crew), black skinnies, and my fiercest tootsies (the Jimmy Choo booties I was obsessed with earlier this season went on sale!!! — $487, Net-A-Porter):

BAM.  I’m also seriously obsessing over this new jewelry line I discovered, Pound Jewelry.  I am desperately in love with this tribal-inspired statement piece ($225, Pound Jewelry) –

– which serves as a convenient segue into my other obsession of the moment: neon pink.  I know, not really news to anyone.  But when I saw this ridiculous Balanciaga duffel, the love affair was rekindled.  I just…no words ($2,445, Balenciaga):

{Aside: did anyone else have one of those pink ballet bags with their name sewn on the side as a child?  I think my mom snagged them at Lillian Vernon for my sisters and I.  We always referred to them as “the pink bags” and, no matter how much my father insisted that we “pack light” because we would be responsible for carrying them through the airport, he always wound up carrying about 34 pink bags with Barbies, blankets, and other toys jammed in/dangling out the side.  At any rate, love the idea of majorly upgrading from Lillian V. to Balenciaga, but continuing that pink bag tradition.}  When I saw the above tote, I was instantly prompted to scurry into my closet to pull out my Kate Spade glittered tootsies ($325, Kate Spade), which have not seen the light of day for far too long.  I instantly popped them into my bag for the NY weekend.  You never know.

Perfect shoe for a glitzy dinner party — especially if you’re serving with these funky little salad servers (can you imagine?!  how perfect for an NYE dinner party?! — $34, Leif Shop):

And even better if you’re sporting this awesome origami-style dress from Jenni Kayne (I have put this into and out of my shopping cart on Shopbop on many a late night — $650, Shopbop) and a pair of glittery studs (Kate Spade, $48, Zappos):

Love.  In a maj way.  And beneath it all, I’d wear some pretty, BRIGHT little underthings — right now, I want all of Deborah Marquit’s entire collection (some colors are on sale — $55-$110 per pair, Net-A-Porter):

Talk about putting pep in your step.  And while going rainbow-colored, I’ve gotta gush about this other sick new line of clutches and bags ($605, Emily Cho).  I love these funky little folded clutches — great colors, and what cool texture!

P.S. I spoke briefly with the talented folks over at Emily Cho, and they indicated that if you would like to place order, you should email Rasha Reyn directly at rreyn@emily-cho.com.  In a complete gear-shift, I have also been coveting this cozy leopard-print fluffy robe ($49, Victoria’s Secret):

Lovesies.  I imagine lighting some new Diptyque candles (check out this supersized version of Baies, my favorite rose-petaled scent — $90, Saks):

I also really.really want their body oil ($78, Saks) and their luxe hand balm ($38, Saks), which I continually check out at Blue Mercury on my lunch breaks.  I would just feel so naughty spending that much money on such frou-frou items.  I’ve also heard good things about Kiehl’s classic lip balm, and think I may need to snap some up ($9 each, Neiman Marcus):

While thinking of luxe beauty products and boudoir gear, I’ll also gush over these bomb silk pajamas ($268, Journelle), which would make me feel like a balla bombshell, and these awesome customizable sloafers (you can get them monogrammed and can pick the color of the slipper AND the thread stitching! — $120, Eliza B.):

And…scene.  I’ll wrap up this hodge-podge post here and wish you a HAPPY WEEKEND!  Eeee!

Girl Drama

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Bombshell, Cocktail Dresses, Fierce, Glitter, Shoes on December 1, 2011 at 10:51 am

You’ll have to PTI (que?! sports reference?!  what is WRONG with me today?!), but I’m making a departure from my gift-giving series for the day.  I have one or two gift-giving posts for the upcoming week, but you’ll have to wait, because–true to form–girl drama is going to take precedence.

Let me explain: My father loves the phrase “girl drama.”  I think it’s his way of compartmentalizing the chaos that comes of a house full of girls (five girls, two boys in our family) and laughing at it — his way of categorizing and cordoning off “all that noise” into a tidy little two-word sum that rolls off the tongue.  He’s so tickled by the phrase that he named one of his racing horses “Girl Drama.”  (Imagine the announcers: “And…here comes-Girl-Drama-racing-around-the-bend…”)  For some reason, his affinity for the phrase is hilarious to me, because he is staid and seriously cerebral (his version of pleasure reading consists of tomes on the World Wars, biographies of Winston Churchill, and other seemingly dry reads).  It’s almost like imagining James Earl Jones using the phrase with glib abandon.  So wrong, and yet so endearing.  But, as much as the phrase reminds me of my father and his perception of our rumbly tumbly sisterhood, this post is not about girl drama in the cat-fight sense.  It’s about fashion drama — looks that make you go WOW.  Funky shapes, interesting textures, out-there styles — like this kickin Sass & Bide dress ($1,320, Net-A-Porter) with some magenta drops ($34, BaubleBar).  The feathers are O.O.C., and I live for it.  Borders, potentially dangerously, on the Michelle Kwan (can kind of see her flying around the ice with this on), but in all the right ways.

Perfection with platformed black velvet pumps ($87, Zappos) and a KAPOW clutchski ($88, J. Crew):

Finish with a swipe of fuschia lipstick (Tom Ford, $48, Berdgorf’s) and — for extra drama — Chanel’s Black Satin nailpolish ($25, Cusp — I know, I know, I’m a total BRIGHT polish devotee, but I recently, finally, tested out Essie’s “Carry On” and am kinda loving the darker hues):

Orrr, try it halvesies: a feather skirt (Milly, $385, Net-A-Porter) with a crisp white blazer (Robert Rodriguez, on sale for $150, TheOutnet) and a tangly pearl-and-crystal necklace ($195, Bicyclette Boutique) to affect the tuxedo look:

WOAH, dra-ma.  Love that stark winter white blazer against the frilly black bottom.  Hot-chi mama.  Finish with a gemmed clutch ($140, Moyna) and some intense platforms (Zanotti, $695, Barney’s):

Now, keeping in this dramatic palette, get ready to GASP at the amazing-ness of this gold-festooned skirt by Opening Ceremony (on sale for $169, Bergdorf’s), which I envision pairing with a dramatic black blouse ($230, Reiss — or, for the bolder out there, check out this sheer style by Equipment, which could be layered over a feminine cami) and a statement necklace, worn just under the collar ($60, Modcloth) alongside a pair of dark-glitter studs ($118, Alexandra Beth):

I’d finish with these intense (!) glittered peep-toes ($99, Nordstrom):

– and this fierce clutch (House of Harlow, $210, TrendBoutique), which reminds me of an Alexander McQueen style, but at a fraction of the price:

Or, add a little SPARKLE to your life with a dramatically draped blouse ($75, TopShop) paired with a pizzazzed up skirt (Haute Hippie, $695, Farfetch) and an awesome statement necklace ($365, Suzanna Dai) and coordinating studs ($27, Zappos):

Finish with some sick, uber-high heels (Elie Saab, $595, Boutique1):

And then, finish with a sparkly little clutchski ($128, Armani Exchange):

Finally — and this is a very non-Magpie look, but I’m kind of loving the idea: sparkly studs ($108, Charm & Chain), a simple nude blouse ($200, Stylebop), a bow necklace (cute take on a tuxedo, eh, eh?! — $165, Tarina Tarantino),  black cigarette pants ($79, J. Crew), and studded flats ($165, Solestruck):

Would look AWESOME beneath this feather cropped topper ($135, TopShop — or, if you want the Real Deal, check this Adrienne Landau coat out), and finished with this mini crossbody ($168, BCBG):

LOVE the glam, dark swan drama of it all.  This is DEFINITELY getting me geared up for my trip to NYC tomorrow (visiting my hilarious little sassy pants sis and her darling boyfriend, with Mr. Magpie in tow).  WOO WOO.  Love Thursdays that are actually Fridays.
