Wrapped, Part III: Gifts for the Mini Magpie

In Accessories, Gifts!, Leopard, Mini Magpies on November 30, 2011 at 11:28 am

I’ve heard that you’ll never be able to experience the magic of Christmas like you did as a child — until you have your own kids.  And I can see why: I recently helped mi madre select some gifts for some Mini Magpies at classic old D.C. toy store Sullivan’s, and it was a total, giddy throwback.  The store even smelled the same — like plastic and rubber and packaging, but a little sweeter.  I saw all of these little knick-knacks I used to beg my Mom for — little bouncy balls with glitter inside; stickers (my sisters and I collected and traded those bad boys like it was our job); useless wands with some sort of glittery liquid on the inside; slinkies.  (What do you do with that stuff?!)  I think that if I had a Mini Magpie in my life, I’d start with the big guns, like a classic Radio Flyer sled ($77, Amazon).  When my siblings and I received this classic staple one Christmas, we were ecstatic, although a little unnerved by my parents’ claims that many children “lost their fingers” by putting their hands underneath the runners.  Yikes.  (There was also some debate about whether it was actually faster than the plastic-bottomed ones.)

And while we’re on the topic of sleds — and please note that I normally, categorically, do not feature products that are not photographed against a white background — um, I died when I saw this precious pug-in-a-sled onesie ($12, Square Paisley Design) and literally spent ten minutes racking my brain in search of an expecting mother who would appreciate this.  None of my besties are preggo, so I toyed with the idea of awkwardly sending it to a friend of a friend and then I realized — woah, woah, woah, Miss Money-Burns-a-Hole-in-Your-Pocket.  But seriously, it is that cute.  The Rudolf daschsund version also caught my eye, but that PUG!  With it’s nondescript little face!

I die.  I die even more when imagining a wee one in one of the onesies above and a pair of  baby mocs (red pair: $60, Freshly Picked — Kourtney K’s baby Mason wears these all the time! — bottom pairs are both by Minnetonka, $30, PiperLime), which would be a cute little present for baby winterwear:

Also, aren’t footsie pajamas sort of a given for baby/toddler Christmases?  Love these semi-funky printed versions ($26 each, Hanna Anderson):

Add a snuggly animal blanket ($45, Serena and Lily), and you’re set.

And while we’re on the topic of baby gear, um, this lobster bibski ($22, A Plus R Store) is the perfect gift for a Northerner, and would be darling bundled up with these ergonomic toddler utensils (read the description on the side-bar of the linked page — the implements are crafted specifically for the chubby little hands of a kiddo — $42 for set, A Plus R Store):

Baby things are so fancy these days.  While on the subject of Christmas mealtimes, I saw these plastic mats and, though these specific ones are intended for pets, I would totally snag them and slap my child’s name on them instead (especially love the dog bone print! — $18 apiece, LaPlates):

Finally, is it mean to dress your child up like an animal?  If not, I would totally foist this little moose cap  ($26, QVC) or these leopard booties ($40, Endless) on a wee one:

These animal accents remind me of these adorable, customizable wall art pieces ($28.80, LeoLittleLion), which I think I’ll nab for all of my friends who have babies, although I realize I’m quickly digressing from a “gifts for minis” to a “gifts for expectant mothers”:

The latter reminds me of one of my favorite books as a child – Babar! – which would be such a lovely present ($9, Amazon) alongside my other favorites (Curious George; Alexander and the Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day; the Angelina Ballerina books; Caps for Sale; etc; etc.  Notably missing from this list?  Dr. Seuss.  My Mom hated Dr. Seuss because he invented “jibberish” words, and we were always instructed to use adult language.  We never called things ba-bas or binkies or ta-tas, and my mom often tells the story of when, as a precocious 3-year-old, my doctor asked me, “Oh, honey, do you have a boo-boo?!”, and I turned to him, nose pointed in the air, and said: “It’s not a boo-boo.  It’s a cut.”)

Anyway, back to the “kid classics” I launched with — I love the idea of gifting an old-school chalk board ($12.95, Fish’s Eddy) with some chalk ($3.95, Fish’s Eddy):

These rudimentary “toys” provided myself and my best friend in elementary school hours of enjoyment.  I should also note, at this point, that though I do not plan to have children for awhile now, I am absolutely addicted to this motherhood blog (“Life in the Clark Lane”), which is authored by the elder sister of that same elementary school bestie.  I can only aspire to this young mother’s grace, perspective, and obvious talent as a parent.  And…I literally cried as I read the beautiful words of wisdom and love that her family shared with the newest addition to her family, baby Jack.  I also read Cup of Jo and Southern Eclectic regularly, and am similarly moved by the beauty of their motherhood.

For little gals, I loveee these sweet little lettered necklaces ($70-$85, Mija):

I feel as though I would have been obsessed with the idea of special jewelry as a little one.  Did anyone else read the Elizabeth Koda-Callen series as a child?!  O.M.G.  I died and went to heaven with them — each book came with a theme-specific locket.  I think my Mom gave me one for each birthday, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day for about four years of my life.  I had so many dinky little lockets around my neck…

That, and a frilly tutu ($20, PiperLime) — what little girl doesn’t like to dress up like a princess?

And, while on the subject of ballerina gear, how beyond darling at these little trompe d’oeil socks ($3 for set of 3, Target)?!

And, now, I know that this post has been heavy on the footwear (what can I say?  Love tootsies!), but how beyond are these printed mocs ($38.50, Trumpette)?

Their graphic prints bring to mind these darling customized silhouette plates I spotted on Etsy ($45 apiece, Aedriel Originals):

Beautiful keepsake.  Happy shopping!

Wrapped, Part II: Gifts for the Betty Crocker and the Little Lady

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Gifts!, Home Decor, The Little Lady on November 29, 2011 at 11:15 am

More shopping deliciousness below, which bears both good and bad tidings.  On the positive side:  lots of covetable gifteroos to pass along to your nearest and dearest.  On the negative: I am having serious problems restraining myself from ordering a lot of these items for my selfish little self.  Yikes/oops?  Am I pulling a Scrooge?

I have a number of friends and relatives who fall into the “Betty Crocker” category — you know, those wonderwomen who are at once impressive home-makers, excellent cooks, and inspired entertainers.  I hope one day to join their ranks, but am still learning the tricks of the trade.  One tip I have picked up: snap up eye-catching barware/serveware.  People notice — including guys, who like to be made to feel as though they are sipping their bourbon a la Don Draper in Mad Men, as they would with this oh-so-chic mid-century pitcher/glass set ($150,  Chic Shop LA) atop a personalized tray ($130, Saks):

A perfect slam dunk, especially with these personalized letterpress coasters ($50 for 58, Rock Paper Scissor — or check out these square styles from Pressed In Brooklyn, which also caught my eye.  Love a good monogram).  Coasters would also be a lovely accompaniment to a few of these beautifully designed Penguin “Great Food” books (all focus on the subject of food — around $8 apiece, Amazon):

Continuing in the vintage vein, I spotted these retro-styled tea towels and instantly thought of a few people who would get a kick our of their kitsch ($16 apiece, Cube Market Place):

If your giftee is the organized type, a tidy little recipe caddy ($50, Jack and Lulu) could be just the winning ticket, especially paired with a couple of hand-written, treasured recipes from yours truly:

Or, consider pairing this festive collection of rainbow-colored chopsticks ($35, MomaStore) with a gift card to your favorite sushi spot (ours is SushiKo…yum, yum!  Mr. Magpie always orders the Joe Sushi Platter, which is an assortment of the chef’s top rolls, and he goes into food heaven every.single.time), or some bold knives (Mr. Magpie and I own several of these inexpensive, all-purpose wonders, and the ceramic edge just doesn’t dull! — $16.99 apiece, Linens and Things):

I also think that a few jars of Ricks Picks delights (OMG, Mr. Mapgie would die over these habanero and sriracha pickles — $7.99, Ricks Picks — or these spicy pickled green beans — $9.95, Ricks Picks) would be a lovely add-on to this rustic-looking cutting board ($80, Michele Varian):

While in the “au natural” section of this post, I’m loving the idea of this wooded tapas serving dish as a present ($38, A Plus R Store), paired with one of my favorite chef’s tapas cookbook (“Made in Spain” by Jose Andres, $22.50, Barnes & Noble):

And, finally — who doesn’t dig a set of transportable, shatter-proof champagne flutes ($12.95 for 4, Go Vino), for impromptu celebrations on the go?!  I am smitten with these affordable wonders and think they would make a darling gift alongside a favorite bottle of bubbly (Mr. Magpie and I frequently celebrate with 1+1=3, an off-dry and inexpensive BUT DELICIOUS cava from Spain)!

Would look darling wrapped up in one of these location-specific wine totes ($13 each, MapTotes):

Switching gears entirely: we all have those exacting Little Lady friends — you know the type: organized, put-together, and sophisticated.  Here are some top picks for those lovelies.  First, who doesn’t want to see the little aqua box under the tree, regardless of how playful the gift?  I propose a set of lovely playing cards ($30, Tiffany) — can’t beat the packaging.

Keeping with the Tiffany theme, aren’t these lacquer boxes perfection in the aqua blue ($120 for set of 2, Swing Design)?

Or, how about a ladylike boxed set of notes with different sayings on them (the first is blank; the second reads: “Fancy That” — $22 per set, Russell and Hazel), paired with a fun little pen (these promise to last seven full years — $7.50, SeltzerGoods):

Or, wouldn’t any Little Lady love this feminine throw ($322, CocoCozy)?  Perfect for curling up in an armchair with a book.

Now, of course the Little Lady is never without a powdered nose, so some luxe-looking bath and body products would be welcome.  I’m thinking of a beautiful assortment of my favorite candles (I l.o.v.e. Tocca scents — $42 for set, Sephora):

Or — how about a lovely set of soaps in a pretty little box (they look like French macarons! — $19, LAFCO NY), paired with one of these vibrant Turkish linens (they are HUGE and can be used as throws, towels, runners, or anything else you can think of! — $40, Basic French):

And, finally — a few items for the well-heeled Little Lady.  We all know my deep and unending love affair with these adorable be-petaled clutches from Sondra Roberts ($98 each, Nordstrom).  Olivia P. owns them in a few shades.  Hence, the obsession.

I’m also just head over heels for these acrylic monogram necklace ($58, Moon and Lola), which I’d pair with an oxford and some skinnies and a pile of big, chunky bracelets:

Ooh.La.La.

Wrapped, Part I: Gifts for the Glamor Girl and the Book Worm

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Bombshell, Brights!, Gifts!, Intimates, Monograms, Sleepwear/Loungewear on November 28, 2011 at 1:04 pm

In this first installment of a multi-part “gifting guru” series, I am going to share some of my top picks for Christmas gifts for this season.  In today’s post, I geared my choices towards the Marilyns and Jackies in my life — i.e., the Glamor Girls and Book Worms.  I feel that a lot of my friends fall into one of the two categories.  In later posts, I’ll tackle gifts for other folks, like the Betty Crockers in your life :)

There are a lot of girly girls in my life, and I shopping for them.  Nothing more fun that receiving a glam little makeup palette ($40, Bobbi Brown) or a luxe lip color (Tom Ford is my new obsession — great colors, such luxe packaging — $45, Bergdorf’s) tucked into a cute little pouch ($160, Satine):

Or, for the sartorially-minded, check out these coffee table staples, which feature hundreds of Vogue covers from decades past ($91 apiece, Graphic Image):

And, get this — Graphic Image will personalize the book for you!  Love small, personal touches like that.  You’re entering insta-heirloom territory with a gift like that.  For a close girlfriend (don’t want to send the wrong message to someone…), I have been snapping up pretty little underthings left and right these days, and would absolutely love to give/receive one of these pretty little bralettes (Honeydew, $32, Madewell):

Would be cute rolled up and tied with a big satin ribbon, and then paired with a sleep mask ($25, Shopbop), some luxe body oil (OMG this stuff is amazing — I pop into the Blue Mercury on M St all the time to test it out, but can’t quite bite the bullet and fork over the cashiola to buy it for myself — $78, Blue Mercury):

In the same vein, consider gifting a silky robe (I love the leopard…surprise, surprise — $128, Victoria’s Secret — and think that Kim Kardashian was wearing it in last night’s debut of the new “Kim and Kourtney Take NY” series…I’m such a sucker for those reality shows):

Perfect packaged with a set of mini nail lacquers (Nars, $35, Beauty.com):

If your glamazon gal pal does lots of weekend traveling, I’ve had my eye on this well-priced carry-all for awhile (the perfect carry-on! — $53, ModCloth), which would be lovely on its own, or, if you’re a balla, with this cashmere travel set ($295, Sofia Cashmere):

Um, first of all, I pretty much DIE over these beautiful deco-style Penguin Classic hardcover versions of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s works ($25, Penguin Classics), which would be just gorgeous packaged in metallic tissue alongside this set of glam gold playing cards ($15, APlusRStore):

Lovely with a set of boxed stationery ($26, Kate Spade) and a ladylike pen (when I studied in France, all of my classmates used lovely, fountain writing implements — I immediately invested in a nicer pen, impressed by their attention to this smallscale extravagance — $15, Muji):

Or, if your bookworm is the e-reader type, consider offering her a snazzy iPad case ($50, Net-A-Porter) and a gift card to iBooks/iTunes:

Bundle it with some funky earbuds ($42, Shopbop) –

and maybe some eye-catching notebooks ($6 apiece, Kate’s Paperie) and a fun little pen ($18, Kate’s Paperie):

A snuggly reading throw would be a lovely addition to any bibliophile’s home ($60, Calypso), especially in a cheery color:

And, for fellow monogramaholics, consider offering a set of personalized book plates ($12.50 for 24, Tickled Pink Ink):

More to come later this week…but for now, enjoy CyberMonday!

Thankful.

Golden Girl

In Americana, Black, Bombshell, Cocktail Dresses, Fierce, Fresh Combos, Shoes, Winter Weather on November 22, 2011 at 12:20 pm

The other day, I was sifting through some of the items I’d dog-tagged for inclusion in future posts, and realized that almost half of my recent “picks” were black, gold, or some combo of the two.  Weird how you can find yourself subliminally gravitating towards something, inspired by who knows what?  Where does inspiration come from?  Too heavy a thought for this deary, oh-so-close-to-vacation Tuesday?  No worries — just settle into auto-pilot like I have and enjoy the gorgeous glimmering beauties below!

First: a little something-something for an upcoming holiday party: a simple LBD ($60, In Love with Fashion), which I’d pair with dramatic drops ($78, Raffine) –

– I’m eying these glitzy tootsies from Michael Kors ($175, Zappos), but if the gold scares you off, they’d be just as chic (and more versatile) in the black ($165):

I’d wear this with look with a funky little clutch in an interesting color or print.  Something like this Sondra Roberts style ($126, Sondra Roberts) would be ideal:

For more casual wear, I think a little daytime sparkle is in order over the holidays, especially in the form of this covetable sequinned, striped sweater ($118, J. Crew), which I’d pair with (surprise, surprise) a black statement necklace (love that J. Crew brought back their “bubble” style! — $150, J. Crew), black skinnies and some sloafers (still obsessing over these Charles Phillip styles…$135, Bloomingdale’s):

It would look fantastically chic with the Proenza Schouler PS11 clutch ($975, Net-A-Porter) and this patterned shawl-collar topper (Rory Becca, $247, Shopbop):

Finally, I just recently snagged (and am ga-ga over) this inexpensive black-and-gold watch ($60, Piperlime), which I would most definitely pair with the above look, in addition to a simple gold ring ($32, BaubleBar):

Or, for something a bit dressier, I’m loving the shape of this Parker dress in classic, silky black ($275, Eve’s Apple), which I’d couple with this “cascade” necklace ($162, Bauble Bar):

I’d remove the black belt provided and replace with this eye-catching gold-accented style ($48, BCBG) and pair the look with these gold and black ankle-strap wedges (on sale for $236, MyMu) and this Marc by Marc Jacobs panther clutch ($328, Saks):

This eye-catching gold-lined jacket would be perfection atop it all (on sale for $301, Built by Wendy) — what a statement!:

The above coat would also look perfect over this jacquard Tibi number ($420, Net-A-Porter), which I’d style with a big black necklace ($60, Max and Chloe), black tights, and some serious platforms (wowza — Charlotte Olympia, $895, Bergdorf Goodman):

For a more refined affair (with parents/grandparents/parents in law in tow), this classy little number is the perfect blend of sophistication and sexiness (on sale for $250, LKBennett).  I’d wear with sparkly drops (Anton Heunis, $300, LesPommettes)

And imagine the BANG you’d make finishing with these gold-tipped Louboutins ($675, Bergdorf’s…and a few more sizes here, at Net-A-Porter), this beyond adorable DVF clutch (available for preorder — $495, Intermix), and a fur scarf ($235, Net-A-Porter):

And, while I’m much more inclined towards dresses for dressier occasions, I am loving this metallic-striped top from Rachel Zoe ($275, Saks), which I’d style with shoulder-grazing tassel earrings ($22, ASOS — and I’ve also had my eye on this $88 pair by Soo Inh Kim), black jeans (or, if you dare, black leather or waxed pants — ooh la la!  I’ve seen some serious fashionistas rocking the leather pants in a major way, but I’m kinda terrified…), and some glam booties (woah, gold heel — $296, Reiss):

If those boots terrify you, check them out in pump form ($288) instead or swap in some platformed black suede/velvet pumps.  Alternately, if you’re digging the shoes above but want something a bit more refined, check out these sleek Tabitha Simmons!  I’d love to finish the look with this bow-accented Louboutin purse ($1,595, Net-A-Porter…TDF.):

Glam.  Love being a golden gal.

Wicked Cold

In Accessories, Black, Fur, Monograms, Plaid, Shoes, Winter Weather on November 21, 2011 at 1:53 pm

Oh, hey, winter.  I was wondering when you’d make your way to D.C., and then you reared your bald, mean little face (?) last week, leaving my extremities numb and my nose running.  It’s OK, though — I had a friend tell me that a friend of hers recently moved from Arizona to Massachusetts, and, instead of whining about the frigid temps, the desert transplant said: “Well, I could get mad about it, but I might as well use it as an excuse to buy cute accessories.”  Love that ‘tude, and am going to channel it here with a few top picks for these frostier climes.  First, LOVE these buffalo-check Sperry all-weather boots ($98, Zappos), which I’d pair with a yummy knit sweater ($265, Reiss), a faux-fur vest (Rebecca Taylor, on sale for $175, TheOutnet), cool gal sunnies (these are Rachel Bilson’s pick, so I must own them — Carrera, $130, Piperlime), and skinnies (PS, a lot of you ask what brand I wear — I wear exclusively Paige or J. Brand, but my all-time favorites are the J. Brand 912 skinny…love):

I’d finish with one of these personalizable Rebecca Minkoff totes (love the black with the glossy gold imprint — $550, Rebecca Minkoff):

I’m also eying this fur-trimmed cape (yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s from Victoria’s Secret…ergo, not brand-desirable, but — it’s so cute! — $158, Victoria’s Secret), which I’d pair with black skinnies and, if — and only if — there were inclement weather, a pair of wellies (my much more fashionable sister and I always vent about people trying to make Wellies happen in normal weather…it’s dumb. — $125, Shopbop):

I’d wear the Wellies with the Wellie socks, which are supposed to be super snuggly and warm.  Plus, they have a leopard pair.  YES.  The look would be finished perfectly by this two-tone hobo ($348, ScoopNYC), which looks awesomely preppy and yet un-done/laidback at the same time:

Other winter weather musts?  This darling snowshoe scarf by Virginia Johnson — perfect quirky accent to a solid winter white coat or an oversized gray sweater ($198, PrettyMommy):

Or, how about warming freezing fingers with these rabbit-fur glovelettes (Jocelyn, $98, Intermix)?  Would love to see these puppies in my stocking.  Hint, hint.  I think they’d also be cute as a sort of cuff to an otherwise staid topper.

So.cute., especially with a bold red mani?!  Die.  Get outta here with your cozy cuteness.  While on the topic of furry cold weather gear, I love earmuffs — so, so much cuter/more ladylike than a hat, in my opinion.  My mother gave me a pair of gray rabbit fur earmuffs awhile ago that I live in come cold weather — very similar to these affordable Madewell ones ($39, Madewell) — but I’m also loving this pair of white ones from Karl Donoghue ($145, Net-A-Porter):

Either would  look darling with this fair-isle drape-neck cardigan ($38, Buckle), black skinnies, and some fierce booties (these ain’t even my style, but I am so in love with them, I can’t even contain my jealousy towards anyone who owns them — Burberry Porsum, $1,055, MyTheresa):

UGH those boots are awesome.  I’d finish with a croc-effect clutch (I can’t decide if I like the brown or black better! — Lodis, $198, Zappos):

Regardless of which color, I’d finish with a gold signet ring (check out this well-priced version at J. Crew! — $25, J. Crew — or get a personalized style from Jordann for $245 at Max&Chloe), a ladylike leather-strap watch (love this Michael Kors style! — $180, Shopbop), and some simple gold studs (Gorjana, $30, Revolve):

For more snuggly warmth, check out this vintage-styled knit scarf I spotted at H&M last week (fab stocking stuffer, and perfection for a ski weekend! — Bonus points for its SCALE; it’s big! — $17, H&M):

I kind of like the idea of sporting it with a cozy thermal ($45, J. Crew) layered beneath a snuggly puffer (Polo Ralph Lauren, $254, Farfetch — love those toggles, but J. Crew has this less expensive vest available in great colors; worth checking out):

I’d finish with these all-terrain, all-weather Sorels ($140, Zappos) during the day, but if I needed to dress it up a bit for a little afternoon coffee date or something, I’d reach for these amazing shearling-lined wedge booties from Giuseppe Zanotti — $850, Shopbop):

I’m also absolutely smitten with this wool plaid blanket coat from BB Dakota ($120, Shopbop — they are running low on sizes, so check here for more if you’re on the hunt!), which I’d style with these epic shades from Thierry Lasry ($375, Net-A-Porter — Olivia P. loves this line!), black skinnies and black booties on the fierce side of the scale (Michael Kors, on sale for $112, Nordstrom):

I’d add a little gloss to the look with this bomb Alexandra Satine tote (love those gleaming gold accents — $490, Alexandra Satine):

Finally, for more snuggly goodness, this cable-knit shawl-collar robe is at the top of my list ($178, Shopbop — YUMMY!) –

I’d bundle up with those, some snuggly, vintage-knit socks (love all of the Lisa B. styles, but especially the reindeer — $20, Lisa B.):

And, even while inside, I kind of want to keep my fingers toasty in these cozy knit gloves ($46, Hat Attack), which would coordinate perfectly with this oh-so-warm infinity scarf ($188, Steven Alan):

I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling ready to brave the winter weather!  BRING IT.

Les Petits

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Brights!, Gifts!, Leopard, Pop of Red on November 17, 2011 at 11:06 am

It’s the little things that make my day — the perfect cup of coffee awaiting me in the morning {Mr. Magpie is a coffee connoisseur, and I benefit from that snobbery with French-pressed coffee made from the best, burr-ground beans every morning}; the pop of a bright, new scarf peeking out from beneath my LRR outerwear; the secret of a new, fun unmentionables layered beneath my wardrobe.  Today’s post is all about those “petits” that make my workdays that much brighter.

First, I love a bold pop of color, as you know, and these silk cashmere blend beauties from J. Crew ($75, J. Crew) absolutely brighten my life — love those bold, saturated colors, especially against a winter white wool coat.

They’d also make a lovely Christmas gift for a mother/mother-in-law/etc.  The perfect mid-priced indulgence.  I’m also convinced that I may finally need to give up my “less is more” approach to the iPhone and invest in a cheery, personalized iPhone cover from Rouge&Co.  I’ve always thought that the cover-free iPhone looked much sleeker and more grown-up, but I may have to trash that theory in favor of one of these two styles ($52 each, Rouge & Co):

I’m also loving layering colored jewelry atop patterned/printed dresses — you know I have a soft spot for Tucker dresses like this, which I would eagerly pair with one of Loren Hope’s long tassel necklaces ($185, Loren Hope — and while you’re checking her out, scope out this pearl cluster beauty, which I bought as a mother-of-the-bride gift for my mother):

If that’s too bold, test-drive with one of these eye-catching bangles (Lulu Frost for J. Crew, $68, J. Crew):

And, you know, a bold nail always makes my life.  I’m currently loving Lippmann’s “Daytripper” (L) and “It’s Raining Men” (R –$16 each, Zappos), and these ultra-luxe Tom Ford hues in (L-R) “Ginger Fire,” “Indian Pink,” and “Scarlet Chinois”  ($30 each, Bergdorf’s):

Keep them stowed in an equally eye-catching tub — I keep mine in a paisley printed MacBeth Collection tub (prices range depending on size — $25-$85, MacBeth Collection), and even just looking at the tub on my shelf makes me happy (and P.S. — you can get them monogrammed!):

While up in NYC last weekend, I scored some unbelievable deals on underthings from Hanky Panky and Eberjey at Scoop (love that store), and they have the BEST bold colors ($29 per Hanky Panky boyshort pair, Zappos; $36 per Eberjey bralette, Shopbop):

I mean, doesn’t that just put a little extra pep in your step?  Speaking of underthings, this little leopard romper is the cat’s meow (you can punch me in the face for the cheesy factor).  Totally unnecessary and impractical (you have to take it all off to use the restroom?!), but makes me smile ($71, Shopbop):

I’m in love.  You know I have a soft spot for leopard/animal prints, which is why I’m also fantastically head over heels in love with these animal-influenced affordable sloafers (cobalt blue AND animal?!  I die — Charles Philip, $98, Bloomies):

I’m, like, dead inside because they are already sold out in my size.  POUT in a major way.  I would totally rock them with my black skinnies and a little black fur vest or topper of some sort, and then a huge, bold, tangly necklace.  Dumb.  And — OK, not that these are “petits” in the cost sense — but these eye-catching Kelly Wearstler box clutches would be the perfect accent point for the outfit above ($850, Kelly Wearstler):

While we’re on the subject of Kelly, doesn’t this bold little scarfski ($215, Kelly Wearstler) make you so happy?!  Ugh, love all of these cobalt and black combos:

Kind of perfection with these uber-affordable studs (Carole, $6, Nordstrom’s):

While all of these little accessories make my day while I’m out killing it as a working woman (ha.  I often resort to listening to Beyonce’s “Diva” when I need a little pep and swagga), home-time is made all the better by the fact that Mr. Magpie has gotten into the lovely habit of pouring me wine and lighting my favorite candle in order to greet me (my favorites are Diptyque’s “Baies” — $60, Saks; Tocca’s “Florence” — $38, BeautyBar; or Voluspa’s “Verveine and Olive Leaf” — $22.50, Bloomingdale’s):

And, like the rest of the world, I am smitten with Anthro’s inexpensive “latte bowls,” especially in the smallest size, which I use to serve little aperitif-accompanying munchies, like olives and cornichons and “oriental snack mix” (Mr. Magpie loves the wasabis, while I fish out the sesame sticks):

What are your life-brightening tricks?!

Opulence

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Black, Bombshell, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Dream Wear, Fur, Glitter, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes, Winter Weather on November 15, 2011 at 11:15 am

Despite yesterday’s “frugal fanny” theme, during this holiday season, all I want is luxe, opulent pieces in interesting, rich textures like satin, velvet, and silk.  Bring on the gem tones.  For example, I d.i.e. and go to heaven when I look at this silver brocade design by Rochas.  Then, I d.i.e and go to hell when I look at the price tag ($2,145, Barney’s).  I’d wear it with sparkling ruby drops ($430, Bounkit):

I’d offset it with a red bow clutch (Furla, $215, House of Frasier) and some bold ruby red satin slippers (I mean…I die — Kate Spade, $298, Zappos):

And finish it all off with some faux cils and a swipe of red lipstick.  For another rich-looking brocade style, how about this Cynthia Rowley number (love the structure — $395, Cynthia Rowley) coupled with these decadent danglers ($150, Flannels)?

I’d finish with this gorgeous green velvet tootsies (Gucci, $755, Bluefly):

A glittering gold box clutch seals the deal ($199, Henri Bendel):

When I was searching for a cocktail dress to wear to my upcoming annual “Have Yourself a Merry Little Cocktail” party, I was immediately drawn to this eye-catching gold-on-black style by Pleasure Doing Business ($385, Revolve Clothing — although more sizes are available at Urban Outfitters, where it costs $439 for some reason…) — a dead-ringer for an Oscar de la Renta style…me likey:

I’d pair this structured wonder with this pleated bow clutch ($225, Sondra Roberts) and some lace heels (l.o.v.e. — $69, Zappos):

However, I ended up going with this simple, festive, silky little Naven dress in cranberry ($242, Revolve Clothing), which I’ll accent with a bold, glittery statement necklace ($298, Henri Bendel) and my cropped white fur topper, which I finally got to wear for the first time while up in NYC last weekend (Adrienne Landau, $695, Neiman’s):

I’ll finish with some bold tootsies — I wish I could afford these velveteen beauties by Erdem ($705, MyTheresa):

…but I think I will probably end up with these J. Crew sparklers ($228, J. Crew) in the red glitter, for a little tone-on-tone action.  SUH-WOON.

As my bestie pointed out, these would also make a lovely addition to a Dorothy costume for next Halloween…for something just as luxe but a little…racier/more bombshell, check this out: a lacy dolman sleeve top ($78, Nordstrom — loving that price!), paired with a full skirted number (gosh, I’m really digging volume right now — RED Valentino, $295, Net-A-Porter) and a gem-encrusted pendant (O.M.G. — Lanvin, $2,975, Barney’s):

I’d finish with the classic YSL Trib Toos in gold and black ($795, Bluefly), even though I kind of feel like the fashion world is SO over them.  But they really would be the perfect counterpoint to the volume of the outfit above and the luxeness of the necklace.

I’d tie it all up with this adorable satin bow clutch ($88, J. Crew) and throw a magenta/burgundy-hued fur around the collar ($295, Intermix):

Oh, and the only other thing I’m DEF going to test out this holiday season?!  Glittery nailpolish (Deborah Lippmann, $18, Zappos).  I’m not sure I like it layered over other colors (a little gaudy), but just on a nude nail?  So glam.

OK, that’s it.  I gotta get back to listening to my custom Christmas playlist on Spotify.  (Yep, once November rolled around, I was ready to deck the halls and rock out to a little Mariah Carey “All I Want for Christmas.)

Ballin on a Budget

Woah, sorry for falling off the face of the planet.  Between trips for work and fun (Park City + Tucson + NYC + Wine-tasting in VA), I’ve had minimal time to get my life back in order during the week.  I have, however, been looking for ways to style myself in the cheap during these expensive holiday months, and wanted to share a few ideas with those of you who share my plight (i.e., shopaholism) and limited funds.  First up: faux fur.  I, like, can’t get enough of the stuff this season and am continually wowed by the inexpensive versions cropping up all over the place.  Consider, for example, this $65 version from BB Dakota, available at Shopbop (if you need proof of its cool factor, check it out on one of my favorite bloggerinas, Ahn of 9-to-5 Chic), which I’d layer over a printed blouse (I love all of Tucker’s styles, but saw this cool Joie style on sale at Barney’s and did a quadruple take — $139, Barney’s) and some skinnies:

(Or get this “brindled” fur style in grays, blacks, and whites, also by B.B. Dakota and also available for a cool $65, which I own and dearly love — it’s a bit less versatile than classic black, but it makes a slick statement styled with black skinnies and booties).  I’m into dressing for warmth and comfort these days, so I instantly envision pairing the fur with some cozy mocs, and am currently loving this retro-styled beaded version ($40, Shopbop):

Perfect with the Navajo-chic vibe I’ve been loving this season.  Something like this blanket sweater is right in the zone right now ($82, WeLikeFashion):

Snuggly with some skinny jeans and my Minnetonkas.  (The brand Left on Houston also has some cool poncho styles available right now, but for closer to $200 a pop.  Worth a gander.)  While on the topic of Native American-inspired fashions, let me rave about my recent obsession with all things feathered.  I am head.over.heels for this necklace ($78, Shopbop), which I’d wear tucked right under the collar of a blouse or as the neckline adornment for a simple crew-neck t-shirt or dress:

I found a comparable version for far less on Etsy ($26, BohoPlunder).  How sick is it?!   Heartsies.  For a slightly bolder look, check out these peacock-inspired earrings I scouted out on Etsy ($18, PeaHenLee):

BTW, I’ve pretty much scored all of my Christmas presents for my friends and fam on Etsy this year.  They have so much fantastic jewelry and accessories, I pretty much went hog wild.  Love you, Etsy.  Thank you for coming into my life.  One non-Etsy item I’ve been eying for a friend of mine (well, also for me…I can’t decide whether to be a selfish Scrooge-lette and just snap it up for myself…) is this awesome sequined, patterned clutcheroo ($60, Zara):

I’ve wanted/needed this bad-boy ever since I saw it on Lindsay of Saucie Glossie.  Love the size and the color combo — cobalt blue is my JAM these days.  I’d wear it with my cobalt J. Brand skinnies, a white blouse, and some glam jewels, like these fantastic danglers (only $16?!  QUE PASA?! — ShopFurbish):

Yes, yes, yes.  Thanks, I’ll take those right now.  And while I’m at it, I might as well snag this awesome Missoni-inspired enamel tray to store my new bling ($22, ShopFurbish):

(Speaking of Missoni, I placed my order for my Missoni for Target dresses this past September when they first launched the collab and the Target site promptly crashed for, like, 24 hours straight as fashion obsessors like myself clamored to snatch up every last bit of their inventory.  I keep receiving emails indicating further delays / low stock / the potential that they may not be able to fill my order.  I am disappointed to say the least — I’m almost 99.9% sure I’m going to finally find out, after months of being strung along, that they cannot fill my order at all.  BOO HISS.)  At any rate, I’d also stow some other funky little accent pieces in the above tray — I’m currently coveting one of these fun little Nixon watches — perfect for a low-key Saturday post-workout ($60, Shopbop):

And, totally unrelated, but I kind of obsess over these studded sloafers (Jeffrey Campbell, $170, Ssense).  I mean, are they bananas or what?!  I would never have picked them out because I’m a scaredy cat when it comes to things that look a little fierce, but then I saw Sheridan French of Southern Eclectic rocking them like the true little fashionista she is, and pretty much died/contemplated buying them on the spot…thoughts?!

Um, you go Glen Coco.  Love those bad boys.  I’d wear them with this amazingly affordable drape-front leather jacket (Velvet, $150, Revolve Clothing — though they have free shipping, they are running low on sizes; you may prefer to check out a wider selection of sizes via Amazon):

Awesome finished with this funky little pouch/clutch ($55, Shopbop):

Don’t you love/die over it?!  Eee.  OK, that’s all I got for today — I’m all over the place, so you’ll have to forgive my semi scattered post.  More (and more structure) soon.  Happy Monday!
