February 28 Update: As a special banish-the-winter-blahs treat for my readers, the folks over at TepperJackson have offered to award one lucky magpie one of their flashy luggage tags!  All you need to do is add Tepper Jackson as a friend on Facebook or follow @TepperJackson on Twitter, and then leave a comment on this post telling me where you’d like to go on your own little winter escape!  A winner will be randomly announced this Friday, March 5th!

WhoWhatWear’s creative director Katherine Power (fab name) recently proposed that a white handbag is the It item for Spring 2011.  And she’s right — there’s no better way of offsetting the bold, saturated colors of this upcoming season’s fashion profile than with a set of porcelain white add-ons.  I’m in.

A large white clutch ($195, Elaine Turner) and some lucite shades (Pucci, $112, TheOutnet) are the perfect accents for a bright tangerine-colored dress ($298, Steven Alan):

Especially when punched up with a BRIGHT scarf in a light cashmere blend ($195, ChanLuu) and some pristine white sandals (Givenchy, $525, Farfetch):

Alternately, consider the bold effect of pairing a crisp white shirt-dress ($62, TheOutnet) with a bold necklace ($380,  CoutureCandy):

Finish with some pop-of-pink blush ($27, Sephora),  these un-freaking-believable flats ($240, AngelineTournier), and a wallet-turned-clutch (YSL, $305, Matches):

And…many apologies for getting seasonally ahead of myself, but I just can’t contain my excitement for SPRING — how much do you die over the idea of a simple tee ($19.50, Madewell) paired with a day-glo pink scarf, white jeans, and some raffia flats (Repetto, $255, Thomas Maier):

Finishes perfectly with this uber-cool DVF bag (love the tassel — $675, DVF):

Alternately, do you not love and live for this bright citrine dress ($106, TheOutnet)?

Some silver flats ($165, PrettyBallerinas) and a classic Givenchy carry-all ($1,550, Farfetch) are all you need:

Well.  On second thought, perhaps this statement making lariat necklace is just the right finishing touch ($280, FlutterNYC):

Alternately, how about a BRIGHT necklace ($295, Kate Spade) peeking out from beneath a textured white jacket (Malene Birger, on sale for $380, 25Park) layered atop some skinny jeans and finished with some confetti-print heels ($285, KateSpade):

I’d add only this bold laptop case-turned-clutch in either screaming pink or shade-your-eyes yellow ($50, Net-A-Porter):

If you’re seriously bold, you might consider this neon yellow shift (Michael Kors, on sale for $404, TheOutnet) with a funky little silver necklace atop (Lee Angel, $80, TheOutnet):

Tone it down a bit with some white flats (Dior, $392, Bluefly) and a lace-effect cross-body bag (Lulu Guinness, $448, ASOS):

Finally, I’m personally obsessed with the idea of a white blazer with a coral blouse (DVF, $322, Matches), some skinnies, and some spring-ready minimalista chic sandals (Michael Kors, $150, Intermix):

The only thing I’d add?  An oversized brown leather clutch (how to DIE for?!  and it’s only $45! — American Apparel):

…and a long necklace (I can’t stand the thought of under-accessorizing…it’s a problem.  $138, ShopBird):

Or spruce things up with a Jil Sander-esque orange blazer ($385, StevenAlan) with a silk tee ($72, Madewell), some white jeans, and some laser-cut heels ($204, ASOS):

I’d add only a statement-making necklace (and this seriously packs a punch — Fallon, $750, Kirna Zabete) and this iconic Derek Lam clutch ($890, Barney’s):

Anyone else ready for spring?!

In Beach Wear, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Neutrals, Pop of Red, The Honeymoon Trousseau on February 22, 2011 at 12:42 pm

One of my lovely readers recently requested some styling assistance in preparing for a beach wedding.  Two days later, one of my best friends announced her upcoming plans for a brief getaway to the Dominican Republic.  A) I’m intensely, sickly green with jealousy, and B) You’ve come to the right place, as I’ve been naughtily collecting beachy looks for the past couple of weeks in a pathetic attempt at imaginatively escaping these lingering months of winterdom.  {I shouldn’t complain too much — it’s been refreshingly mild the past few days, even reaching 70 on Friday.  But then it snowed this morning.  We’re in a barometric cul de sac.  Harrumph.}  At any rate, my cup runneth over with beach-ready looks, and the principle governing all of the looks below?  A healthy balance of neutrals and bold, saturated colors.  So get ready, set, pack!

And P.S.: while you’re at it, travel in style by setting your luggage apart with one of these fun bag tags ($19, Tepper Jackson), and by stowing your in-flight essentials in these clever, TSA-approved clear cosmetic bags ($6 apiece, Toss Designs):

And P.P.S.: Please take me with you.  I’m petite, and can fit well into confined spaces, like suitcases, duffel bags, etc.  Onto the entree: what to wear?!  First up: down time / casual wear for exploring the area / hanging out in between events.  As per my last post, I’ve been showing some serious love to the Mexique Chic vibe.  I’m obsessed with this APC Madras embroidered top ($195, ShopBird), and I’d wear it with crisp red shorts ($42, J. Crew) and a classic panama hat ($110, Net-A-Porter) for a glam vacationista look:

Finish with a careful dose of neutrals (you want the red of your shorts and embroidery to POP against an otherwise organic palette of browns and whites): a stack of gold bangles ($19, Warehouse), some neutral t-straps ($36, TopShop), and a cross-body bag ($109, Zara):

Alternately, a loose blousey top ($215, Singer22) pairs perfectly with some aviator-style shades ($180, Blue and Cream), some easy-on white jeans, and those phenomenal Aldo t-straps I featured last Friday ($90, Aldo):

Keep things light and airy with a loosely draped lariat necklace ($75, PinkMascara), a set of mix-n-match style bangles ($100, Amrita Singh), and a straw tote ($215, Singer22):

Or how about this comfy navy-striped maxi ($195, Seaton Surf), paired with classic t-straps (K. Jacques are the.original. — on sale for $115, MyTheresa):

Finish with a beach-ready canvas tote ($150, Chance Co), stuffed with the essentials: suncreen (Clarins, $37.50, TheCosmeticMarket), some SPF-infused lip balm ($22.50, Fresh), a pair of trendy aviators (D&G, $135, Nordstrom), and a beach read:

(One of my all time favorite books of life.)  Don’t forget a poolside bev — Mr. Magpie and I were obsessed with the caipirinhas at the cabana at our honeymoon resort (sugar plus freshly muddled limes plus rum = heaven).

I’m also loving this orangey-red striped cover-up (this is a kid’s size, but the XL should fit a S — $73, Petit Bateau), worn loosely over a white eyelet bikini ($19.50 for top, $19.50 for bottom — Old Navy) and finished with a flowery fabric bib necklace ($255, Chance Co):

Perfect with some fun little be-pom-pommed sandals (Lanvin, on sale for $315, MyTheresa) and a roomy canvas tote (I’m obsessed with Anya Hindmarch’s styles — $135, Saks):

And how darling would you look in this gauzy little cover-up (love the white-on-white embroidery, $148, French Connection), topped with a funky mixed-print beaded necklace ($80, ByBoe):

Layer over a seersucker bikini ($75 for top, $75 for bottom — Calypso) and finish with this to.die.for Nina Ricci tote ($1,850, Barney’s):

Love it with these funky swan-print espadrilles (aren’t they darling?! — Tory Burch, $175, Net-A-Porter):

For wedding-related events (as an aside, beach weddings tend to be much more casual than traditional, brick-and-mortar-housed versions), consider a breezy maxi dress ($195, Calypso) paired with shoulder-grazing earrings (suh-woon over these — $69, Janna Conner):

Finish with a natural straw clutch ($375, Shirise) and some accented metallic t-straps ($195, Pret-A-Beaute):

Wear hair down and loose or casually side-swept in a messy bun, and add only this statement-making bangle ($4.90, Forever21):

If you’re not quite as bananas over the boho caftan style, dip-dyed fabrics feel very au courant…very Proenza Schouler-esque.  I’d consider either this Mina Stone dress ($368, Steven Alan) or this Adam frock ($127, TheOutnet):

Either would be perfect with a pair of enorma-studs ($70, Kendra Scott), a mother of pearl-esque clutch ($240, Moyna), and some bejeweled Giuseppe Zanottis (the sandal equivalent of the glass slipper — $450, Intermix):

Now that I’ve sufficiently depressed myself by my LACK of traveling prospects, it’s back to brainstorming ways of banishing the winter blahs…

ADDENDUM: Anyone have a freakishly small foot like mine?!  I’m selling a pair of pristine gold Manolo Blahnik flats…please step on up and into my closet if you’re interested!

Bric a Brac

In Accessories, Brights!, Gifts!, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes, Sundresses on February 18, 2011 at 1:05 pm

I’m feeling a bit scattered today, my attention pulled in a million directions, my fashion sense so multi-sourced that it’s hard to collect myself into one theme-centric post.  Accordingly: here’s a little of this, a little of that — the bric a brac of my fashion sensibility — arranged  in no particular order.

First up: bright stripes.  This almost feels dated given that F/W ’11 collections just hit the runways, but I’m still going bananas over the vibrant striped separates that defined Prada’s S/S ’11.

{images from style.com}

…though decidedly NOT bananas over the weird Frieda Kahlo hair, masculine-looking models, and hein shoes.  I.want.the.colorblocked.stripes.  And I’ll take ‘em, in the form of a cute little tee ($35, Debenhams and $295, Neiman’s):

Perfect with some funky shades (Marc Jacobs, $120, Nordstrom), a bright scarf ($55, Madewell), and some cheery t-straps (never too early to start buying for spring, and these Sam Edelman’s are 50% off at only $27! — Shop The Ram):

Or maybe this lovely little beaded necklace ($165, Loren Hope Designs), an anti-depressent in the form of a quilted handbag (do you not die over the color?! — $79, Vieta), and those House of Harlow shades I’ve been drooling over ($125, ShoptheTrend):

Like the look and willing to go “whole hog”?  Check out this chic Milly dress, or this Stella number.

*********************************************************************

Second: peachies.  I’m hosting a little birthday fiesta for one of my oldest college girlfriends tonight.  Her sole request?  “Lots of peachies.”  Have you tasted this nectar of the gods?  Easy equation:

Just mix fresh peaches, pink lemonade mix from concentrate, ice, and tons.of.Absolut.peach.vodka. Blend, serve with neon straws, and then watch this magic little potion work its wonders…aka lead to hilarity, impromptu dance parties, and even an old-school round of “Thunder.”  (If you don’t know this game…probably best you don’t.)

(Also, have plenty of snackeroos on hand.  You’ll need something to counterbalance the unmitigated sweetness of the frozen wonder with something salty.)  Oh, and don’t forget a killer playlist.

*********************************************************************

Next up in this random Holden Caulfield style post?!  The Mexique.Chic. look.  I’m seriously feeling the rustic, embroidered, crochet vibe at the moment.  I want to wear breezy, gauzey tunics and dresses accented in reds, pinks, and oranges.  Bring it.  I’m talking a peasant style blouse ($175, Calypso) –

And a funky necklace ($135, APlusStore), a SICK crochet-accented heel (I need this pair, and pronto — $90, Aldo), and a straw tote ($195, Kate Spade):

And how about a festive dress, a la this Milly number ($295, Net-A-Porter)?

Some serious neckwear (Lizzie Fortunato, $975, Charm and Chain) and a pair of patterned espadrilles ($395, Theodora and Callum) nail the look.

*********************************************************************

Hi, my name is Jennifer, and I’m a mascaraholic.  I’m seriously, problematically vain about my eyelashes, and I’m absolutely addicted to any and all mascaras — the darker and thicker the better.  When I read that one of my favorite bloggers, Kelly Framel of the Glamourai, had mink lash extensions put on, I was instantly intrigued/obsessed with the idea.  I’m fairly certain that it’s a costly process, so Mr. Magpie will definitely be putting the kibosh on this pipe dream, but…eee.  Instead, I’m planning on pulling out the big guns this weekend and using my Givenchy powerplay mascara, which leaves my lashes awkwardly brittle but makes them look fantastically long.

Yes, yes, yes.  The above three are my absolute favorites.  Bisous, all of you.

*********************************************************************

With the unseasonably, delightfully warm weather, I’ve been in a country mood for the past 24 hours.  (Typically, the wintry climes lead me towards brash, angry hip-hop music and fury-ball emo jams.)  On my Grooveshark channel?  The holy trinity: Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, and T. Swizzle.  {And a little Band Perry and Lady Antebellum now and then.}  When it gets seriously warm, I’ll up the ante to include the country men: Tim McGraw, Dierks Bentley, and Alan Jackson.  This makes me want to drink one of Mr. Magpie’s Blind Pig Cocktails, all of which are served in mason jars, and two of which should be available in grocery stores within a few months’ time!

*********************************************************************

I’m headed to a black tie event on Mr. Magpie’s arm tomorrow night, and all I am thinking about is whether I should wear my hear up a la Faye Dunaway in the original Thomas Crown Affair.  I recently tuned in to a portion of the film, and was smitten with her look.  Love the enorma-studs, the uber-long lashes, the 60s styling.

To bun or not to bun?!  Anyone else loving the look?

*********************************************************************

Finally, I’ve been swooning over the happy tulips that have been cropping up at the market.  I want tons.  And I will buy tons.

{before}

{after}

…Alright, was that scattered enough for you!?  Hope you’re feeling more composed than I am…

Spy Games

In Accessories, Black, Fierce, Jewelry, Shoes, Winter Weather on February 16, 2011 at 12:00 pm

I’m normally inclined towards the festive and colorful — I favor bright, graphic prints; pops of geranium red; shocking pink dresses; happy, sunny colors; all things feminine.  But recently {perhaps due to the interminable winter weather?}, I’ve been channeling my inner vamp by wearing lots of black and dialing up the fierceness factor with my footwear.

Something like the impossibly high heels pictured above would be right up my alley right now.  {Holy moly.   They double as a built-in line of personal defense.}  And P.S.: Don’t worry, mom, I’m not plunging off the deep end; I won’t show up to our weekly lunch date looking like Dita Von Teese.  But the aesthetic I’m drawn to at the moment is something a touch sleeker, more polished, a bit…international-woman-of-mystery-esque.  Side bar: Something about this aesthetic is laughably unattainable for me, since I’m petite and highly unintimidating, but — let’s roll with it, get in touch with our inner Kardashians, and feign involvement in super-important undercover mission impossibles.  First up on the must-have list: some don’t-mess-with-Texas shades.  I’ve been coveting these House of Harlows ($125,  ShopTheTrendBoutique) for awhile — love the glam factor of the gold rim.

Perfect for lux-ing up an all-black get-up revolving around a slim-fit blazer (Alexander Wang, $175, Farfetch), a high-contrast white-on-black blouse (Moschino, $525, Net-A-Porter), and some skinnies:

Finish with some show-stopping sculpted-heel peeptoes (Casadei, $330, Farfetch):

Hair should be uber-straight, jewelry should be heavy and onyx-esque (something like these lovely Ben-Amun studs would be perfecto– $145, Charm and Chain), and bags should be sleek and slightly edgy , a la this Balenciaga tote ($1,250, Balenciaga):

Alternately, contrast the drapiness of a black top ($246, Farfetch) with the heaviness of a tribal-style bib necklace ($34, Mango) and the twigginess of your skinnies:

Finish with these un.be.lievable cut-out booties — they look like Nicholas Kirkwoods, one of Olivia Palermo’s favored labels (she owns these ones, likely among many others, and I sweat them so badly), but they ring in at a fraction of the price — yahoo! (Lovely People, $130, Moxsie):

Pairs perfectly with this roomy, luxe-looking Givenchy bag (seriously.  Looks like they were M.F.E.O. — $1,968, Matches):

These Yochi starburst studs  ($33, Yochi NY) and a thick enamel bangle ($78, Isabel Harvey) complete the look:

A trim leather jacket might be just the ticket for balancing out / reigning in the shapelessness of the tee (how yummy is this caramel-hued drape-front style by fashion editor darling Helmut Lang?! — $1,325, Barney’s):

I’ve never owned a leather jacket, but if I were to make the investment, that would be my top pick.  And if we’re talking dream wardrobe, how much would you live in this Balenciaga dress ($739, Matches), cinched at the waist with a lovely skinny camel belt?!  Perfect with these statement-making earrings ($53, Yochi):

I’d finish with one of the iconic Alexander McQueen skull-print scarves and a pair of nude platform pumps (f.i.e.r.c.e. — $245, Nordstrom):

Ideal for a sleek work outfit (or, you know, undercover international espionage), especially paired with this snakeskin iPad case ($145, Kooba), which could be safely stored in this sleek tote ($650, CCSkye):

Meanwhile, this leopard-print dress ($145, TopShop) and some serious earrings ($72, Yochi) –

would be bellissima with these kickin’ heels ($177, Endless) and a structured little clutch (Alexander McQueen, $428, TheOutnet):

Alternately, this structural cut-out sheath dress (Alice and Olivia, $330, Singer22) would be ideal with a statement necklace (Fiona Paxton, $448, ShopKitson):

Perfect with a quilted chain-handle bag ($625, DVF) and some classic Louboutins ($595, Net-A-Porter):

Some oversized Jackie O.-style shades (Gucci, $245, Nordstrom) and a classic Burberry trench seal.the.deal ($1,095, Net-A-Porter — note: get the sleek detective look for less with this on-point $248 Madewell version):

Finally, a jet-black boucle sweater dress (Adam, $222, TheOutnet) would be chic for weekend activities / museum visiting / gathering intel from “the bad guys” when paired with some statement earrings ($125, Suzanna Dai), black tights, and some fierce mid-calf boots ($165, TheOutnet):

I’d add a chain-accented tote (on sale for $417, Tory Burch):

If nothing else, take a page our of Kim Kardashian’s book  (note that she’s sporting the Balenciaga bag featured above) and test drive with some unexpected, edgy footwear

…Woah.  They’re like half the height of her bod.  Whether you pick a studded pump ($118, Vince Camuto), a buckled bootie (Joie, $217, Endless), or a suede mid-calf boot (a pick semi-inspired by yesterday’s chic pea of the day, the authoress of Blog de Betty, who wore a comparable style by the same designer in her last post — Giuseppe Zanotti, on sale for $438, Shop Zoe), you’ll be owning it.

Nothing like a fierce stiletto to help you crack a Russian spy ring.  {…What?}  All cheesy spy jokes aside: these looks are seirously speaking to me nowadays, as I work towards banishing the winter blahs.  I’m literally wearing head-to-toe black today, complete with my “gorilla jacket.”  What’s on your must-wear list these days?!

Be.Mine.

In Accessories, Brights!, Champagne!, Cocktail Dresses, Fur, Glitter, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Romantic on February 14, 2011 at 12:46 pm

This month has already gotten off to a romantic start — Mr. Magpie and I toasted to our six month wedding anniversary on February 7th, and we’ve been reveling in newylwed-hood for the duration of the month.  How appropriate, given that it’s Valentine’s month, and love is in the air…

…quite literally, if you take on the DIY “glittered love garland” project I stumbled upon via the Lovely Indeed blog.  I’d string this up in our apartment to set the mood for our romantic dinner for two, which we’re having catered by BlackSalt {oysters + lobster + desserts = oh my!}, and which will be accompanied by a bottle of Pierre Paillard grand cru, which came highly recommended from our favorite wine aficionado, Julio of Best Cellars in Clarendon.

I spent the majority of my Sunday “Valentine-ing,” baking little love notes in the shape of sugar cookies and starting to assemble the tablescape for our dinner:

{The bottle of sparkling rose was also a Best Cellars find — Mr. Magpie and I went nuts and bought a mix-and-match case of delicious-looking wines and champagnes.}  I had intended to buy some roses at the florist for the occasion, but mini-carnations in a variety of pinks and reds caught my eye.  I normally despise carnations — they read “tacky” to me, for some reason — but the spray of Valentine’s Day colors lulled me into their purchase, and I found myself buying three dozen in varying shades and happily assembling them into a happy little “love-day” arrangement:

Aren’t the colors to.die.?  It’s totally inspired my Valentine’s Day getup, which can most easily be explained via  a simple dressing equation: floaty little top + skinny jeans + spiffy shoes + bling-bling = one pretty little Valentine.  I’m opting for a shirt like this happy geranium-hued find ($22, Madewell), paired with skinnies and some splashy flats (Bloch, $200, Net-A-Porter):

A stack of red and gold bangles are a downtown-chic addition (Amrita Singh, $100, Pink Mascara) –

(I obsess over the mismatchiness of this stack — it looks like a collection you’ve been carefully assembling for years, and over multiple continents.)  I’d probably finish with my blush pink blazer, which is definitely the favorite piece in my closet at present (this version is by Paul Smith — $330, MyWardrobe):

Killer (and I mean killer) shades (I’m obsessed with these scallop-design Chloes — $330, Nordstrom) and a slouchy black bag is the perfect counterpoint to the frou-frou fruitiness of the rest of the outfit (Alexander Wang, $1,360, Mrs. H)

Or how cute would you look in a cowl-neck sweater in cherry red ($152, TheOutnet) with this kitschy kiss-print scarf ($178, ShopKitson)?

I’d finish with some black suede booties (Giuseppe Zanotti, $572, Bluefly):

The Wang hobo above would look slick with this look.  Just finish with a black fur-accented topper — I’m obsessed with my recent Loeffler Randall score, even though Mr. Magpie calls it my “gorilla jacket.”  It looks super chic with streamlined black jeans and sky-high black booties.  If you have the means, this R13 variation is bananas  ($1,560, Farfetch):

Especially with some glammed up bling, like these Ben-Amun studs ($230, Charm and Chain) and this jaw-droppingly fierce statement necklace ($539, LuisaViaRoma):

Any of these work day-to-night, although I’m looking forward to something a touch on the more dolled-up side for my dinner — I’ll be pairing a silky, tomato-red blouse with probably my single favorite pair of shoes in the universe — these hot pink Louboutins, which I display prominently in my closet and smile at every day:

And my other favorite fashion find of the year: a white channeled fur, cropped-sleeved jacket by (this will shock you) Juicy Couture of all labels.  (It’s the same one Kourtney Kardashian wore here and here, and you can still find it at Zappos for $358!)

Get the look yourself with a floaty red chiffon top ($70, TopShop), skinnies, and some fuschia pumps (Sergio Rossi, $252, TheOutnet):

Go heavy on the glam factor with sparkling add-ons, like these vintage-style Elizabeth Cole baubles ($138 for earrings, $198 for bracelet):

A glittery clutch is the perfect finishing touch (on sale for $172! — Kate Spade):

Don’t forget a spritz of your favorite evening-ready perfume (mine is Chanel Mademoiselle — $80 and up, Sephora):

If your plans call for dressier garb, something like this Anlo silky dress has my name written allover it ($278, Thistle Clover)

I’d pair with nude pumps ($260, FootCandyShoes) and a fun little clutch (Lanvin, on sale for $543, Matches):

Some sparkle is necessary here, and I’m loving these ladylike drops ($98, Max and Chloe), and this glittery bangle (Alexis Bittar, $195, Intermix):

Alternately, I’m head.over.heels. for this asymmetrical, pleated number by Richard Nicoll ($315, Net-A-Porter), which I’d pair with these gorgeous Kate Spade enorma-studs ($125, Kate Spade):

I’d pair it with some bright red peeptoes (these coral-red Louboutins have been on my love list for far too long…swoon — $715, Barney’s):

And then maybe round it out with this blush glittered clutch ($35, Dorothy Perkins):

And finally: the absolute dress of my dreams?!  This unbelievable Giambattista Valli shift (d.i.e. — $2,230, Net-A-Porter):

Let the dress do all the talking.  Just add some nude/blush pumps (Jimmy Choo, $495, Net-A-Porter) and some deco-style earrings (l.o.v.e these Lulu Frosts — $350, Charm and Chain) and you’re the perfect Valentine:

And hey — if you’re flying solo this year and just need a little perk-me-up for yourself — a little self-serve Valentine — consider this delicate heart-shaped necklace ($140, Erica Anenberg):

Or how about these delicate-yet-organic-looking finds by ByBoe ($38 for ring, $40 for studs):

For something on the higher-end of the scale, how much would you cherish one of these darling little heart-shaped Louis Vuitton money purses ($405, Louis Vuitton)?

Or go all out and let your bag do all the talking for you with these gold “Amore” clutch by Moschino (on sale for $598, Moschino):

Ooh la la.

Breaking a Sweat

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Brights!, Gym Gear, Intimates on February 10, 2011 at 12:32 pm

Fashion keeps me thin — but not for the reason that you’re probably thinking {i.e. not because of the waifs that parade down the runways semi-annually.}  Rather, I’ve always motivated myself to haul my tuchus to the gym and onto the elliptical via the promise of a thick new glossie, full of new fashion ideas and styling layouts.  In this way, I’ve transformed a typically hateful, sweat-filled hour of life into one of pure joy and bliss: ooh, the new Louis Vuitton ad campaign!  Ahh, an interview with Karl Lagerfeld.  Eee, Taylor Tomasi-Hill’s new accessory picks.  Nothing makes my little legs move faster on the elliptical.  Lately,  I’ve been switching it up and extending my workouts, breaking a sweat on the elliptical for 40 minutes with magazine in hand and then running on the treadmill for 20 to give myself time to mull over all of the styling I’ve just digested.  {And when it’s warm outside, I l.o.v.e. running outdoors, and will spend the duration daydreaming about new closet additions and challenging myself to come up with fantasy wardrobes for random, figment-of-the-imagination events, like a week-long ski trip to Aspen — my latest self-challenge.  Is that lame or what?}  The other source of magpie metabolism motivation?  Kickin gym duds featuring lots of bright / neon pieces.  I’m obsessed with the vibrant shades of Target’s C9 for Champion sport’s bras, which are only $16.99/pop.

I probably own 10 different colors — I like them peeking out from my other workout staple: boys’ Hanes v-neck tees, which I wear constantly ($7.99 for 5, Hanes):

Oh-so-soft, oh-so-breathable, and oh-so-cheap.  I’ll also stock up on brightly colored cotton tees when they go on sale at J. Crew and Gap.  I know that they’re not technically meant for exercise, but hey!  They’re cotton, they’re pretty, and they’re inexpensive, and you’d be surprised to see how happy a neon pink sports bra against a day-glo citrine tee will make you.  It makes for a little extra pep in the step, and when you’re in the business of burning cals, I’m sure you’re welcome that boost.

I’m something of a Nike addict when it comes to workout pants/shorts — I have essentially had 3 pairs of Nike spandex leggings for the last 10 years, and they just work…and work…and work.  (Seriously.  I work out 5-7 times a week, and they’re still in great shape.)  I love ones with little pops of color on them, like these (on sale for $43, Nike):

In warmer weather, I like solid-colored running shorts — like every other female between the ages of 12 and 40, I have about 3,498 pairs of those Tempo running shorts ($28, Nike), and while they come in fantastic color combinations, I’ve been looking to replace some of them with something new.  I love the cut and color of these Pearl Izumi shorts (on sale for $22, Sierra Trading Post), and I’d pair them with a bright sports bra and a burnout tank (I can’t seem to find them online, but DKNY Active had some phenomenal BRIGHT colored racerback tanks out last season, and I wish I’d bought the entire stock):

For footwear, I buy ankle socks in bulk at Costco of all places, but these inexpensive sets appeal to me just as easily ($6.50 for 3, Old Navy):

(Are you noting a trend here?!  While I’m a serious label-luster in my “real world” wardrobe, when it comes to workout gear, I try to stay on the cheap, because I need my workout clothes to be easily expendable.  Since I work out almost every day, I literally wear my workout items into the ground, and have no problem tossing old, ratty Hanes tees and holey Costco socks out the window after a year of solid service, but I have a hunch I’d feel differently were it Stella McCartney for Adidas gear.)  As for trainers — and this is seriously pathetic — I pick my kicks for aesthetic reasons, which I know is a wretched statement for a serious gym rat, as the wrong shoe can seriously mess with your knees/your ankles/your gait.  But I’m impractical like that, and always need to have hot pink on my sneaks — I’ve been wearing something very similar to these gray and pink Nikes for awhile (on sale for $78, Amazon):

But I’m due for a new pair (I try to replace mine once a year or so, as per my father’s urging — he runs 6 miles a day, and he’s in his 60s.  He knows what’s up.) — and I kind of want these retro-styled Nike Free Runs ($84, FinishLine), which are apparently not only chic but light on the foot:

I’ll pack up all my gear in a lightweight tote — I love my canvas Anya Hindmarch carry-all (I snapped mine up at Sassanova in Georgetown, but Anya releases clever new ones each season — $98, Anya Hindmarch):

However, I recently joined Balance Gym, which is conveniently located en route to my office, so I’ve been hitting the elliptical pre-work.  {L.o.v.e. Balance Gym — it feels like I’m working out at a spa, and it’s never over-crowded.}  Ipso facto: I’m officially a bag lady.  I’ve been walking around with an armful of totes (I’ll usually carry my Anya, my Louis Vuitton Neverfull, and whatever other stray possessions find their way under my arm) in order to accommodate my shower gear and change of clothes.  It’s getting ridiculous. This uber-bright Mulberry mini-duffel caught my eye as a suitable substitution ($265, Net-A-Porter) — it’s foldable and lightweight:

Perfect, too, for toting my wimpy little 5-lb weights.  This is going to sound uber-germaphobic-freak-ish of me, but I’m pretty much grossed out by touching the free weights at the gym.  When are they cleaned?!  Ever?!  People wipe down the machines, but I constantly see grubby, sweaty, germy hands on the weights, and not a wipe in sight.  So.  I occasionally bring my own weights, which make me color-happy ($10 apiece, Amazon):

And, of course, a trusty water bottle.  I’m considering upgrading to one of these eco-friendly Bobbles, which filters water as you drink and lasts for like a million years ($8.95 for mid-size, WaterBobble).  Rachel Bilson uses them…and so will I.

The other items always in my gym bag?  My trusty ol’ UVA hat — for some reason, I was drawn to the camo style as an undergrad, during a strange getting-in-touch-with-the-South moment, and I just can’t bear to give it up now ($19, Mincers):

I also always carry a lightweight sweatshirt / long-sleeved tee — I’m preternaturally cold at all times, so I need it until I warm myself up — and these kids’ size Splendid sweatshirt tees are unexpectedly chic in a lived-in, beachy kind of way (and would probably fit me in the size 14 — $66, Nordstrom):

Then I have a whole mess of bobby pins and my new best friend, these snag-free elastics (note: occasionally I see girls who wear their hair down at the gym and I don’t…get it.  Why?!  Sticky sweaty hair on the nape of the neck gives me the willies — $3.50 for 8, Sephora):

I store both hair tools, along with a handful of beauty necessities (including my Fresh Sugar Rose lip balm — $22, Fresh; my Benefit Posie Tint Cheek Stain — $28, Sephora; a little tub of Tocca solid perfume in the Cleopatra scent — $30, Tocca; and of course a little travel-size sample of the love of my life, DiorShow Mascara — $24 for a full-sized tube, Sephora) in a punchy makeup bag (I just discovered the line 1154Lill, and am ob.sessed with their punchy prints — $38 apiece, 1154Lill):

And — of course — the newest fashion mags.  When they’re unavailable (or I’ve read them cover to cover at least twice), I’ll downgrade and snap up the latest trashy tabloid.  I like to see what the stars are wearing and…you know, get my Kardashian gossip while I pride myself on preventing a Kardashian-sized tuchus.

The other key to success, aside from the latest glossie and uber-bright workout gear?  A killer playlist.  I spend a fortune on iTunes, buying the latest heavy-on-the-beat jams.  {See below for my current picks.}  I like hip hop and techno, and all of the recent blends thereof, and I blast them on my little iPod shuffle, which is teeny-tiny, weightless, and clips right onto my running pants (I also love that it doesn’t have any fancy display screen that I have to worry about scratching up — $49, Apple):

I pretty much buy earbuds in bulk — for some reason, I’m constantly misplacing them and/or getting grossed out by thinking that they’ve collected lots of germs, and I like the JVC Gumy line, which comes in eye-pleasing colors like the grape and melon variations featured above ($10, BestBuy).  If I’m not showering up to head straight to work, I’ll pull on my trusty Patagonia fleece (I know this will sound odd, but something about the style and oatmeal color of this pullover read “retro” to me, and that just.makes.me.happy — $119, Patagonia):

I’ll also pack a lightweight field jacket in army green (love the peach lining on this style — Barbour, $328, My Wardrobe), or a candy-colored anorak (side note — I have excellent luck in the little boys’ section of Gap with this sort of thing — they always have cute styles, and they’re cheap! — check out this $46 classic slicker, or this $46 rugged “grunt” jacket):

If I’m showering, I try to scale back on the 53-lb bag of products I want to bring by sticking to the essentials: travel-sized Frederic Fekkai volumizing shampoo/conditioner, razor, MoroccanOil (arg, can’t get enough of that stuff), and Bliss body butter lotion.  {Side bar: um.  I don’t know if I’m the uber-prude of the century, but I find it very difficult to strut around in the ladies’ locker room in the buff.  And today I made the mistake of planning an outfit that involves black Spanx.  Imagine how hard it is to wriggle into those puppies while other women are watching.  Am I lame on this front?)  I store my sweaty gym clothes in these handy, machine washable nylon Baggus ($7 each, Baggu):

(Don’t you dig the prints?!)  All in all, if you can find little ways to make the workout a happier, peppier experience: do it — whether it takes a couple extra dollars for a bold set of exercise bands, or a spiffy set of colored tees, I guarantee it will pay off.  And if the duds don’t do it, check out what’s currently getting my heart rate up on my iPod:

Bright Idea

In Accessories, Americana, Brights!, Fresh Combos, Intimates, Jewelry, Neutrals, Pop of Red, Shoes on February 9, 2011 at 1:10 pm

The look for spring?  Bright, saturated solids.  Fashion editors went bananas over Raf Simons’ Jil Sander collection, which you’ve probably seen by now — if not in the glossies, in the award show circuit on the likes of Kate Bosworth (gorgeous) and Tilda Swinton (not so gorgeous), and it was definitely hard to miss.

{image from elle}

Personally, I fell head over heels for Cacharel on the spring/summer runway…love how the sharp tailoring grounded the flooziness of the bubblegum pink.

I’m embracing the look just as readily — it’s my way of encouraging spring to hurry on up and get here, of coaxing the warm weather into existence and banishing those winter blahs.  I’d consider pairing my new obsession of the season: this TDF raffia bead necklace in canteloupe and strawberry colors ($328, Amanda Pearl) with an epaulet-esque sleeved white top ($185, Reiss) and a structured skirt ($585, Mirabella):

Some modern-looking nude pumps ($140, Lori’s Shoes) and a bright orange bag (Kate Spade, $425, Nordstrom) finish the style:

Alternately, go for a blood-orange-red blouse ($225, DVF) tucked into a  blush-toned skirt (Vanessa Bruno, $500, Net-A-Porter):

Pair with some blush, pointy toed pumps (Louboutin, $600, Matches) and a cross-body nude bag ($170, TopShop):

And then finish with an unexpected pop of hot pink fabric flower ring (do you die?! — Kate Spade, $55, PiperLime) and a couple of hot-pink-stone-accented necklaces ($168, Wendy Mink):

Or pair a funky beaded necklace ($115, A Plus Store) with a crisp white short-sleeved blouse and some skinnies:

A cornflower blue tote (Rebecca Minkoff, on sale for $396, Zappos) and these slick woven statement heels (Pour La Victoire, $200, Heels) are the perfect add-ons:

Any of the above looks would be perfectly rounded out by a pair of citrus-hued acrylic-framed shades ($38, TopShop):

Alternately, how about a lacey statement necklace ($130, A Plus Store) with a simple white tee and a striped chiffon skirt (Alberta Ferretti, on sale for $295, TheOutnet):

Some sandy-nude flats (love the scalloping — $425, Net-A-Porter) and a nude bag (on sale for $165, Nordstrom) balance the brights nicely:

I feel like Kate Bosworth would rock this colorblocked shirtdress ($60, TopShop) by adding some statement making earrings (Ranjana Khan, $385, Kirna Zabete):

And would modernize the look  and a tangerine-colored cross-body ($295, Kate Spade):

And some cork flats (Sam Edelman, $129, Heels) and aviators (D&G, $260, Saks):

The perfect underpinnings for these looks?  Day-glo Deborah Marquit ($195 / pop — Net-A-Porter):

And how to die is this wheat colored dress ($275, Theory), brought into the 21st century with a pop of citrine?

I’m thinking of something along the lines of these platform espadrilles (I know, not yet season appropriate, but I’m dy.ing for spring, and these are on mind-blowing super sale for only $21! — Endless) and a yellow wallet/clutch ($175, Endless):

Perfect with these wood-effect Wayfarer style shades ($48, Urban Industry), and this kitschy but lovable citrus statement piece (Rosita Bonita, $139, Farfetch)

The necklace has some major cultural cache at the moment, since it looks as though it were designed for Stella McCartney’s S/S ’11 collection, which featured a borderline dowdy and decidedly ’70s-era citrus print that alternately raised spirits and eyebrows.

{Stella McCartney’s S/S ’11 Collection — image via The London Evening Standard}

Or why not go all-in Raf Simmons style, with a crisp, structured white shirt dress (this Chloe version is steeply price — but I’m sure you could find something comparable at H&M come spring — $1,340, Net-A-Porter):

Paired with some bright wedges (Jil Sander, $553, Shop Mrs. H) and a cosmetic-pouch-turned-clutch (Smythson, $180, Net-A-Porter)

This blue-centric statement necklace grounds the look a bit ($250, Amrita Singh), giving it a more wearable edge:

And finally — if you’re not quite ready to take the plunge, and just want a couple of little pops to spruce up the wardrobe, consider a BRIGHT day-glo clutch ($550, Jimmy Choo), some funky Tom Binns bracelets ($950 each, Farfetch), or maybe some sporty shades (D&G, $135, Nordstrom):

The Stuff of Dreams

In Accessories, Dream Wear, Fur, Glitter, Jewelry, Monograms, Romantic, Shoes on February 4, 2011 at 1:08 pm

I feature a lot of high-end merchandise, and many of you have asked me to a) feature more affordable products from time to time; b) run occasional posts that only showcase items that ring in at under $100; or c) divulge my secrets in procuring these high-end styles.  What are your thoughts?  Tell me what you’d like to see / hear!

From my perspective, this little blog has always been un espece pour vous fait rever, a turn of phrase I picked up while living in France that roughly translates as — “a little space that makes you dream.”  Certain phrases and coinings resonate with particular power for some unknown, mysterious reason — we pick them up, adopt them as our own — and this one percolated my consciousness and settled in for the long haul.  As I first developed this little bloggeroo, the phrase recurred to me time and time again; it seemed like an apt credo for the sort of fashion lust that has shaped it, and that continues to fuel it.  This explains, to some extent, the focus on higher-end “dream” picks.  And today, I’m going to throw caution to the wind and feature some of the things that really make my heart sing, with no attention to price tag or practicality level.

1.   M. Patmos Short-Sleeved Fur Jacket {$2,295}

Fur jacket.  Short sleeves.  Never the twain shall meet.  Until this borderline obnoxiously impractical jacket weaseled its way onto my radar, and now I can’t stop thinking about it.  It’s almost custom-made for the type of woman who need only prance from her chauffeured town car to the latest event — but ain’t.it.gorgeous?  (And on second thought, one could make it work by layering a longer-sleeved slim-fit tissue tee / sweater beneath it and pairing with jeans and killer boots.  Note how I’m constantly trying to rationalize my way into a purchase.)  Drop this month’s rent check at Barney’s if you need it.

2.  Lanvin Patent Wedge Lace Up {$1,280}

Ummm, I’m fairly certain that only the most talented of heel-walkers could get away with these vertiginous beauties.  You’d need uber-skinny legs and some serious lower body strength to boot.  {I feel like I’d be dragging my feet around in them…they look heavy.}  But they just kill with their ballerina-meets-tough-girl vibe.  And imagine the wonders they’d work on your legs {you’d essentially be walking around en pointe all day}.  D.i.e.  And then buy them at famed NYC-based boutique Kirna Zabete.

3.  Celine Hand Bag {Price Upon Request}

You know you’re in deep water when the site / magazines read: “Price Upon Request.”  You also know that I’ve featured this bag too, too many times to not have it reappear on this list.  But OMG I would so die for this tote — it’s literally what all.the.cool.girls.are.wearing.  Noticeably high end without being label-plastered.  Practical.  And just a darn pretty bag.

4.  Honeysuckle Pink Nina Ricci Dress {$1,716}

Oh, my.  Hello, lover.  I’m ob.sessed. with the hue, the cut, the style, the fun factor.  Everything about this dress is smile-inducing.  Snag your own for a cool $2K (just about) at MyTheresa.  {Gulp.}

5.  Vinta-Bling.  {Don’t Ask the Price}

This goes without saying, but who doesn’t want an insane box o’ vintage trinkets?!  Lately, I’ve been digging around some of my favorite online vintage / consignment outposts, and just drooling my afternoons away.  I mean.  These House of Lavande pieces are just screaming my name {the first set pictured below, $548, are by Mariam Haskell; the second, worn by Jessica Biel (!), cost $428}:

Or how about this mega-wattage jewel-encrusted elephant bangle?  Only a casual $61K at 1stDibs.  {Eyes popping out of head.}

6.  Rachel Gilbert Degrade Evening Gown {$1,435}

Where would I ever wear this?!  Tragically, there just aren’t enough royal fairy-tale balls in my life to accommodate such a wardrobe centerpiece.  But wouldn’t you just kill to try it on?  {If you lead a more charmed life than I, you can find this at Net-A-Porter…I’ll envy you forever.}

7.  Christian Louboutin Pigalle Glittered Pumps {$595}

So this one isn’t totally out of the realm of reality, but I’d have to do some serious justification on its behalf.  It’s one thing to own a pair of black Louboutin pumps that you can wear everywhere.  {As I do with mine.  Literally.everywhere.  To work, out at night, to the dentist’s, to bed.  An LRR for sure.}  It’s an entirely different ballgame to buy a glittered, Vegas-appropriate variation.  {Cough, cough — I did buy the gold version of these last year for my bachelorette party, and then nearly sobbed when they arrived, looking perfect and oh-so-lovely, only to find that the smallest size they carry is a 35 and in this style, it is just too big for my freakishly small feet.  Ergo, these are the SERIOUS stuff of dreams.}

8.  Old School Luggage {Prices Vary}

I’d love to travel in style with some bespoke Norton MacCullough & Locke pieces.  You’d seriously stop traffic with this stuff.  It scares me to think how much a bespoke luggage set would cost from these high-end purveyors…

Can’t be any worse than Goyard or Louis V, right?  I’d take any of them.

9.  Hermes Enamel Bangles {$460-$660 apiece}

My Magpie mother and I obsess over these.  She found one that she fell in love in the prettiest peach color with while we were in Dijon, France, but decided against buying it and has regretted it every day since.  Literally.  I’ve never heard the end of this.  I wouldn’t mind a stack of them myself.  Check out the entire selection here.

10.  Hermes H Hour Watch {starts at $1,600}

Speaking of Hermes, I’ll also take the H Hour watch while we’re at it.  Great.  Thanks.

Um, I could go on forever.  I literally had a list of 3,234 other things I considered featuring, including Cutler & Gross cat-eye shades, a Jason Wu bow-front blouse, those Valentino studded kitten heels that were all over the place last season, a Celine classic flap bag, any of the floaty J. Mendel dresses that paraded down the S/S ’11 runway, etc, etc…I could go on and on until the cows come home.  {Que?  Never got that phrase.}  At any rate — what are your dream items?!  What makes your heart sing?!

I know what will make ONE of your hearts sing: the giveaway winner has been announced!  Chrissie Bortner will be receiving the set of Pretty Printing “Red Sole” note cards featured in my giveaway!  Chrissie, shoot me an email at jennifer@thefashionmagpie.com so we can send these amazing cards your way, courtesy of Pretty Printing.

Chrissie was randomly selected, but I love her no-nonsense response to where she’d wear these tootsies: “Everyday to work.”  YEP.

Tight End

In Accessories, Black, Jewelry, Minimalista, Olivia Palermo, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather, Work Wear on February 3, 2011 at 1:25 pm

No, this post has nothing to do with this upcoming weekend’s Super Bowl.  Or football more generally.  {Although I did recently learn about / ogle at Cam Newton — one interesting reason to watch the sport.  Um, eye candy.}  The Magpie Men in my life know that I have a deep-rooted aversion to “the pigskin” — perhaps because it eats up so much of Mr. Magpie’s life when “Fantasy Football” is in season; perhaps because I get frustrated when the clock says that there are only 5 minutes left, but that 5 minutes magically turns into 2 hours.  So.slow.  At any rate, this postie is a far cry from the football stadium.  It’s an ode to my new best friend this season: tights.  Legwear.  Hosiery.  I would not have survived this brutal winter weather without you.  You lengthen and slim the leg, you go with everything, and you are so low-maintenance.  I love you.

Lately, I’ve been pairing lots of dresses with tights and sky-high heels.  I go weak in the knees at the thought of pairing this dusty-rose crepe dress (ALC, $675, MyTheresa) with black tights and black, platformed suede pumps (Jimmy Choo, $595, Net-A-Porter):

The look is very Chanel, and I dig it.  I’d add only some jet black enorma-studs (Yochi, $36, Max and Chloe) and an oversized clutch (love the lock detail — $195, Alexis Hudson):

Love.  At work, I’ve been playing around with shorter hemlines (don’t worry, nothing inappropriate — but I like skirts cut a few inches above the knee paired with black tights — anything below looks old school marmish).  I’m loving the idea of this vintage-style white blouse (very Yves St. Laurent — Clemens en August, $112, TheOutnet) with a tweed mini (Tibi, $133, TheOutnet), black tights, and some fierce footwear (these Giuseppe Zanottis are sick – $636, Bluefly):

Normally, I’d pair the above look with either some flats or some classic black patent pumps, but I love the silhouette of a long, lean leg ending in some heavy footwear.  And I’m dying over the mid-calf boot these days.  I might add this eye-catching 3.1 Phillip Lim necklace (love the tribal vibe — $275, Net-A-Porter) and some classic gold studs (on sale for $40, Rachel Leigh):

A chain-handled bag completes the look — vintage Chanel would be ideal (ha. — $2,766, Farfetch), but this $236 Kate Spade version has also caught my attention:

P.S. The above look should most definitely be sported with a BRIGHT, cherry red wool coat (J. Crew has lots of great styles in “torch orange” — a geranium reddish-orange hue — that are on sale currently):

I’ve also been into test-driving bolder prints at work, especially in the form of silky little skirts (the firework print version below is on sale for $79, Madewell) paired with black tights and simple black crewneck sweaters ($145, J. Crew):

I’d finish this look with some glittery earrings (the organic shape echoes the firework print on the skirt — Erickson Beamon, $480, Net-A-Porter):

And then add some uber-high black heels ($160, Nine West) and, ideally, a black Celine tote (a girl can dream…)”

I also like the silhouette of a starched, white bow-front blouse (Vivienne Westwood, $385, Matches) tucked into a printed, stiff-material skirt ($349, Tommy Hilfiger) and cinched with a vintage-looking feather-accented belt ($33, Diamonds and Pearls):

And then finished with black tights and sky-highs ($595, Net-A-Porter):

I’d add some glam earrings ($84, Janna Conner) and a slouchy black tote (Deux Lux, $150, Moxsie):

A couple of side notes about this look:

a) Obsessed with the bow-front blouse after checking out Jason Wu’s S/S ’11 collection.  O to the MG.

{image from vogue.com}

And P.S.: Olivia Palermo’s been spotted in the bow-front blouse style, and absolutely killed in it.

b)  I kind of stole this silhouette from Kourtney Kardashian, Magpie Maven extraordinaire.  Say what you will about the Kardashian clan — I love tuning into their shows {serious guilty pleasure}, and find Kourtney particularly trend-forward.

c)  Like the above Louboutins?!  Don’t forget to enter to win a giveaway for these PRECIOUS, personalized notecards by the talented stationery line, PrettyPrinting:

Just click on over to check out Pretty Printing’s website and then leave a comment on this blog post, on my Facebook page, or via Twitter {including my name, @AFashionMagpie}, telling me where you would wear your own pair of red-soled tootsies.  A winner will be picked tomorrow!

Feeling Frou Frou

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Champagne!, Gifts!, Intimates, Pop of Red, Romantic on February 1, 2011 at 3:00 pm

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I’ve been feeling a little…frou frou: a touch romantic, a pinch indulgent, and always unapologetically feminine.  Ipso facto: lingerie is on the brain.  {Nothing makes me feel more “pulled together” and at the same time lavishly impractical than coordinating undergarments.}

{watercolor by Miss Capricho}

Oh, and P.S.: to the Magpie Men out there: any of the items below would make for a perfect little Valentine’s gift for your leading lady.  And P.P.S. Read to the bottom of this post for an extra little Valentine’s Day treat for my loyal readers!

{gift tag — $18 for set of 10, iomoi}

I’m reaching for a cheery cherry red nightie (Huit, $99, Shop Underwear) and a contrasting yet coordinating shocking pink bralet and boyshort combo (Eberjey, $38 for top, $30 for bottom — Journelle):

Have some happy patent heels handy to add a little pep to your step ($118 for red pair, Vince Camuto; $195 for pink pair, Foot Candy Shoes):

{I’m loving FootCandy’s new house line — lots of of-the-moment, Louboutin-esque styles for far, far less than Mr. Louboutin’s collection.}  And I know I’ve featured these Sondra Roberts petaled clutches in the past, but how perfect are they for Valentine’s Day ($98 apiece, Nordstrom)?!

Or how about some so-fake-they’re-almost-kitschy enorma-studs in sparkling gem-tones ($86 for red, $44 for pink — both Rachel Leigh):

Don’t forget some glossy hot pink (i.e. “Bachelorette Bash”) or cherry red (i.e. “Geranium”) nails (both available for $8 apiece in the Essie Shop):

Throw on a cheerfully-printed shawl (on sale for $136, Virginia Johnson) while primping in your boudoir, which should be accented with uber-girly pillows ($50 apiece, ShopFurbish) and an oversized “LOVE” print ($40, SugarPaper):

…and which should also be the per.fect spot for cozying up to write in your diary / little pink book (suh-woon, wish I could own a Smythson diary — $255, Smythson):

Light the space with some festive-looking striped candles ($18 apiece, FiveStripes) lit by a cute little box of matches ($12, iomoi):

For the glam bombshell, this champagne-hued Stella McCartney romper is beyond ($195,  Journelle):

Goes perfectly with a spritz of J’Adore Dior ($98, Bloomingdale’s), a classic Coty powder puff ($9, Amazon) on the boudoir vanity, and a pair of killer bombshell heels ($159, Heels):

And how vintage perfect is this Eberjey lacey bralet ($46, Shop Underwear) and this delicate heart-accented bracelet in blush rose gold (Jennifer Zeuner, $121, Singer22):

Alternately, how much do you obsess over this pretty-printed nightie by new lingerie designer Blush ($55, ShopUnderwear)?!  I just heard about them and am instantly in love with their affordable, French-style undergarments.

Frost yourself with blingy add-ons, like a  shoulder-grazing sparklers (Janis Savitt, on sale for $210, Farfetch) and this to.die.for set of Alexis Bittar bangles ($225 apiece, Alexis Bittar):

Finally, set the tone just right by lighting Tocca’s “Florence” candle (I live for this scent — $36, Tocca):

And then accent your little vanity area with some vintage-looking home accents, like an old-school letter opener ($52, SugarPaper) and these be.yond. adorable letterpress notecards ($28, SugarPaper):

I like the idea of illuminating the space with this whimsical table lamp ($358, Layla Grace) and storing loose pens and pencils in a vintage-style gold-varnished glass ($8, Furbish):

And of course adding a stack of Penguin Classic’s lovely books alongside:

For those preferring to tone down the unbridled girlishness of the styles above, consider a simple white tee paired with soft undergarments  ($52 for top, $27 for bottom — both in the flamingo color — Cosabella) and preppy-chic boxers ($39, Jack Wills):

Or maybe go all-the-way-preppy with a nautical striped tee (love the cozy drapiness of this style — St. James, $85, Madewell) and some crisp poplin boxers (Bodas, $57 apiece, Barney’s):

Perfect for curling up in your crisp, nautical sheeting ($260 for set, Dwell Studio) and contrasting-striped pillows ($100/pillow, FiveStripes):

Or let Chance do the work for you and try this striped PJ set ($78, Chance):

Love.  I don’t know about you, but I’m in the mood to continue with this frou-frou business…and you can do so by entering to win a special giveaway from amazing stationery line Pretty Printing!  Do you not ob.sess. over these personalized notecards featuring everyone’s favorite shoes?!

All you need to do is click on over to check out Pretty Printing’s website and then leave a comment on this blog post, on my Facebook page, or via Twitter telling me where you would wear your own pair of red-soled tootsies.  {I would wear mine to my Valentine’s Day dinner date with Mr. Magpie.}  A winner will be picked at random this Friday morning!

Ooh.la.la!
