Stocking Up: The Magpie Men Edition

In Accessories, Gifts!, Magpie Men, Monograms, Neutrals, Plaid, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather on November 30, 2010 at 11:01 am

When I was younger, the goodies Santa left in our stockings were just as exciting as the presents left at the foot of the tree.  We’d find all kinds of exciting treats: jewelry, headbands, makeup, stationery, gift cards.  Santa always made the holidays that much more special by leaving us some big ticket items in our stockings, and it’s a tradition I plan to carry on in my own little nest.   Because Mr. Magpie and I are planning on scaling back on gifts this Christmas  (as Mr. Magpie put it, “Don’t you think this year was extravagant enough?” — and he’s right: a dramatic engagement at a gorgeous Virginia hotel — Keswick, how I love you; plenty of travel; all the many wedding-related purchases and festivities leading up to the big day; the showering of gifts from friends and family; the Big Day itself; bride and groom gifts; and then the decadent honeymoon at Turtle Inn in Placencia, Belize.  Yes, this past year has been over.the.top.), I’m thinking that in lieu of big presents, I’ll opt for the perfect stocking, filled with all of Mr. Magpie’s favorite things (and a few bonuses).  It occurred to me that this might be a novel approach to gift-giving this holiday season in a more general sense — something a little different, and a bit more inventive.  Test drive for yourself with some of the ideas that have been stewing around in my little Magpie mind for awhile now:

For the Foodie…

Mr. Magpie is a serious food-lover and an accomplished cook to boot.  I’ll begin with some of these cheerily-colored Kuhn Rikon knives.  We already own (and dearly love) a few of their paring knives — they have unique carbon steel blades that quite frankly never dull, they come in a rainbow of peppy shades, and they are shockingly affordable ($10 a pop, Kuhn Rikon):

Mr. Magpie is also a coffee snob.  Folgers just won’t do — we tend to score our beans at Baked & Wired in Georgetown (he grinds ‘em every morning and prepares the perfect cup for me), which carries Intelligentsia and Stumptown coffee.  A nice bag of the good stuff would be a welcome addition to the Christmas lode, although his parents rave about Illy, so I might just have to upgrade for the holidays ($28 for 2 cans, Illy):

And although we already have quite the spice collection (I mean — they pretty much have taken over the five shelves that constitute our “pantry cabinet”), a couple of well-selected newbies wouldn’t hurt, especially from a higher-end provider like Penzey’s or Dean & Deluca (as shown below — $55 for set of 9, Dean and Deluca):

I like that the French spice set above comes in a pretty little silver box — I’d just tie it up with gold and silver curling ribbon and tuck it in at the stocking top!  Spices are the perfect accompaniment to a gift of upscale grilling implements — I read about this Le Prince Jardinier brand awhile ago, and have always thought Mr. Magpie would adore them ($126 for set, Artedona):

Just thinking about all the yummy things he’ll make me on the grill leaves my stomach grumbling — and also makes me want to treat him to some specialty meats, ordered from a high-end, organic butcher like Niman Ranch (below; Ina Garten of the Barefoot Contessa swears by their bacon — and I’ve seen it carried relatively inexpensively at Trader Joe’s, at around $4 for 12 ozs), Surry Farms (their “Surryano Ham” is supposed to be ri.dic.u.lous and they are local Virginians!  Love!), or Vanderose Farms (Williams Sonoma carries their hams — and for a pretty penny: $169 for 18-21 lbs!):

We’ve recently gotten a little picky about our olive oils.  Our top choice is Frantoia’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil ($17.99, Amazon), which we first discovered at our favorite restaurant and fish market, Black Salt — it is fruity and oh-so-flavorful, and would be a happy surprise for Mr. Magpie, who insists that we not get too accustomed to the liquid gold, for fear of running our wallets empty on such unnecessary extravagances.

(We conserve the pricier olive oils for salad dressings, drizzles, etc — it would be wasteful to really cook with it!  For everyday cooking, we use Whole Foods’ house brand, which is remarkably well-priced and far more flavorful than any of the run-of-the-mill brands, like Pompeii.)  Shifting gears entirely, Mr. Magpie has a major sweet tooth, and though he has a soft spot for my Linzer Cookies (well…Martha Stewart’s Linzer Cookies) and chocolatey treats like SmittenKitchen’s Dulce de Leche Cheesecake Squares (which disappeared with alarming alacrity when I made them a few weeks ago for a dinner party), I’m sure he’ll find room in his stomach for these unbelievable peppermint pretzel slims that I just discovered at Trader Joe’s (yum, yum, YUM), or perhaps their Fleur de Sel caramels:

Finally, no foodie’s stocking would be complete without a little holiday cheer — Mr. Magpie is a beer guy, and he’s seriously into Victory right now, so I might consider a sampler of their finest.  Alternately, I might go with a classic Saison Dupont ale, just because it’s good (I’m not a beer-drinker, so I have this on good authority from my friend and beer expert, Orr Shtuhl, who writes the “Beerspotter” column for Washington’s City Paper) and it comes in a green bottle, so it fits with the holiday theme:

Of course, I know I’d never go wrong providing Mr. Magpie with his favorite of all beverages — bourbon.  He’s a fan of Woodford Reserve, but if I’m considering shaking things up, I always consult BlueKitchen, which provides rankings and descriptions for all of the best bourbons in the country.  And if your man doesn’t yet have a flask (Mr. Magpie inherited his uber-masculine, leather-front flask from his father), consider going with the classic Stanley version ($20, Stanley) — he’ll probably love that Teddy Roosevelt sipped whiskey out of his Stanley back in the day (and Hemingway sipped absinthe out of his).

(W.C. Fields was famous for having said: “Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake.”  Mr. Magpie would love that quote.)  And — for those of you whose boyfriends/husbands are into this kind of thing — there’s soon to be a new liquor on the shelves: Moonshine, bottled.  80 proof.  Not to be messed with, in my opinion.

For the Outdoorsman…

The Stanley flask is a good segue into gifts for the huntsman/outdoorsman — Mr. Magpie’s self-appointed role in the later years of our lives.  (When we stopped in Middleburg, VA for a dog show a few weeks ago — classic, upscale hunting town — he firmly made this decision.)  I like the idea of gifting a new hat in unexpected but hunting-appropriate khaki (Mr. Magpie and I went to UVA, so I’d pick this one from our classic ‘hoo gear retailer, Mincer’s — $17)  and then rolling up a perfect flannel shirt (APC, $195, Stuart and Wright), wrapping it in a red bow, and stuffing it in the stocking as well, as an unexpected, high-end surprise:

A pair of classic Duck boots by L.L. Bean might be a welcome replacement for the grimy hiking boots Mr. Magpie currently stows in his closet ($64, L.L. Bean), while these Ray Ban aviators ($139, Ray-Ban) would seal the deal:

And because you can never have enough plaid: this wallet — in bill-fold or credit card holder form — is a perfect upgrade from his somewhat old, tattered leather version ($125 and $95, respectively, Jack Spade):

The same “you can never have enough plaid” adage goes for these classic Penfield vests (comes in a variety of fabrics/patterns/colors, many of them featuring plaid in one way or another — $140-$300, Penfield):

Now, while Mr. Magpie already has a classic Swiss army version, this rosewood, anchor-adorned pocket knife ($45, BrookFarmStore) reminds me of him:

Perfect for outdoor escapades.  Speaking of outdoorsiness:  I’ve found that the “tougher” guys are oddly stubborn about using any products that might be perceived as feminine, so I can think of more than my fair share of gents that could benefit from a manly hand lotion, like this almost crudely titled “No Crack” cream ($11.90, Vermont Country Store), used by outdoorsmen around the world:

A key candidate for this cream would be my father, the ultimate manly-man in my eyes — just a few weeks ago, I happened to be at my parents’ house, and he came back from handling some type of yard work with blood literally gushing out of his leg.  When I asked concernedly if he was OK, he looked perplexed and then glanced down at his leg — casually — and shrugged, “Oh, just a scratch.”  (He’s 65, and still tough as nails.)  My father — like many of the outdoorsy type — is a consummate fisherman, and I can only imagine his glee at receiving this hardwood walnut fly book ($119, Orvis) along with some cherry-picked dry flies (this used to be my annual gift to him as a child — I would carefully pick out the prettiest dry flies from the casing at one of the angling shops in Aspen, CO, where we spent our summers growing up, and proudly present them to him on Christmas morning):

And — for inspiration — have him check out Hemingway’s short fiction (which, in my opinion, represents some of the most technically perfect writing you’ll find in the short story form — l.o.v.e. — $13.69, Amazon):

Just Because…

I’d originally titled this section “For the Gent,” but quickly discovered that the smorgasbord of items I was throwing into this category really fit no narrower a classification than the “Just Because.”  First up?  Some manly correspondence cards.  I’m in.love with Jack & Lulu’s stationery (I ordered some of their darling calling cards featuring my new last name within days of tying the knot!) and these notecards in stately gray-and-gold, featuring crossed swords (reminiscent of the UVA crossed sabers), are just about perfect ($18, Jack and Lulu) for Mr. Magpie:

Meanwhile, these Thomas Paul melamine coasters featuring sailors’ knots are right up Mr. Magpie’s alley ($16 for set of four, Orange and Pear), and would be perfect for protecting our wood furniture from the condensation on his monogrammed scotch glasses ($72 for set of 4, Williams-Sonoma):

I know that Mr. Magpie had his eye on a textured wool tie while we were shopping for his fall wardrobe at Ralph Lauren a few weeks ago (he’s a Ralph enthusiast — and that’s putting it mildly; I’d guess that about 75-80% of his wardrobe bears Mr. Lauren’s name), and these plaid Gitman Brothers ties would likely fit the bill ($49 apiece, Gitman Vintage):

Perfect for Christmas dinner.  Also perfect for Christmas?  These warm but masculine leather gloves, lined with checked thinsulate (Woolrich, $145, Need Supply):

…and just.because he deserves a little indulgence — not that I necessarily endorse gaming — I know that he’s been secretly eying the recently-released GoldenEye game for the Wii ($39, Amazon):

In reviewing the list above, I’m realizing that I have a lot less stocking stuffers than I do proper gifts.  Eh, well.  Looks like I’ll put off scrimping and saving til next year…no one wants to be a Scrooge!

It’s Trouser Time!

In Accessories, Fur, Neutrals, Pop of Red, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather, Work Wear on November 29, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Don’t know if any of my lovely magpies share my soft spot for trashy reality TV, but the title of this post is an adaptation of the catch-phrase sung by the ever-classy gents of MTV’s Jersey Shore (“It’s t-shirt tiiiime!”)  And scene.  The real point of this post is to discuss the resurgence of the menswear trouser that has been all.over.the.place this season thanks to the return of the 70s luxe look (and, principally, the exquisite taste of Hannah MacGibbon of Chloe).  I mean.  Don’t these gorgeous shots from European fashion retailer Massimo Dutti speak to you?!

I instantly want camel trousers and charcoal gray accents.  Done.and.done.  Something like this cozy turtleneck in warm pewter ($39, J. Crew), a skinny leather belt ($19, Modcloth), and these fit-n-flare Calvin Klein trousers in rich camel ($98, TheOutnet):

Finish with some super high pumps (Dolce Vita, on sale for $114, Heels) and this gorgeous Prada bucket bag (I’m really loving the line of timeless, luxe-looking bags they’ve released this season — my favorite is this one, but the bucket bag below wouldn’t hurt, either — $1,395, Barney’s):

Love the idea of offsetting the slouching softness of the look with a stiff wool jacket in heather gray ($395, J. Crew) and these luxe fur-lined gloves by MaxMara ($175, Farfetch):

For something in a totally different color palette, I am dying over the idea of a pair of a feminine ivory blouse (the Balmain below is literal perfection, but I’m almost ashamed to tell you how much it costs…get the look for less here or here), tucked into some dramatic, high-waisted black trousers (Michael Kors, $695, Net-A-Porter) cinched with this darling Philip Lim belt ($175, La Garconne):

Pair it with a pop-of-red clutch ($250, Reiss) and the Louboutin “Elisa” (adore the very modest platform — $625, Barney’s):

Top it all off with my favorite statement cape of the season — Phillip Lim’s mohair and wool blend checked wonder ($1,100, Net-A-Porter) — um, d.i.e.:

The cape would also pair excellently with a nude-and-white patterned blouse ($175, Reiss ), a nude belt (didn’t realize how much I was into the equestrian accented belt until this post…$32, House of Frasier), some wide-legged gray trousers (Miu Miu, $466, MyTheresa — though you can get the look for less at Talbots), and some Stella McCartney inspired pointy-toed pumps (affordable alert! — $95, Instilo):

Finish with a patent nude bag (this puppy mirrors the shape of the Prada dream bag I mentioned earlier, but rings in at a fraction of the price — $51, ASOS):

Ready to trouser it up?

The Royal Treatment

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Neutrals, Pop of Red, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather on November 23, 2010 at 10:20 am

If you haven’t yet had your fix of media on the recent engagement of Prince William to Kate Middleton — well, join the club.  I’ve been following the recently betrothed couple with great interest, especially after I watched — with rapt attention — their first news interview, in which a slightly nervous, clearly excited, and somewhat cheeky Kate responds to pointed questions about her upcoming nuptials, plans for children, and potential role as queen of England.  There was something so endearing and candid about her somewhat flustered responses — especially as a counterpoint to Prince William’s more rehearsed, polished delivery.  I’m in insta-fan, especially in light of her accessible fashion sense.  I like the idea that someone so frequently thrust into the spotlight can retain a down-to-earth, level-headed sartorial sensibility — the fact that she seems to stay true to a consistent (slightly conservative, slightly preppy, slightly downtown-chic) “look” points to an admirable self-assuredness.  And that’s always something that deserves the — well, royal treatment.

The above outfit may seem a bit “everyday” but I love everything about it — the durable tote, the solid black getup.  And Kate is queen when it comes to toppers/outerwear.  Get the look by pairing your own canvas weekender ($395, Calypso-Celle), a “country” coat (Barbour is the classic, but there’s something pitch-perfect about this Steven Alan slicker — $348, Steven Alan) , some black skinnies, and some unfussy black flat boots ($450, Simply Soles):

She’s also frequently spotted in blazers — something likes this tweed blazer seems to be up her alley ($325, J. Crew), paired with white skinnies (she rocks them in a major way):

Finish with this  luxe leather tote ($285, Foley and Corinna) and coordinating, polished riding boots ($198, Vince Camuto):

Perfect for the occasional polo match.  She’s also been spotted featuring her signature white skinnies in slightly less buttoned-up ensembles –

Go for it yourself with a breezy tunic (on sale for $129, Calypso) and your white skinnies:

While she might be inclined towards ivory or nude-colored flats, I like the idea of finishing with a chic python print flat (Ralph Lauren, $69, Macy’s) and this gorgeous putty satchel (l.o.v.e. the tassel accent — why am I so drawn to the tassel?! — $325, Elaine Turner):

(Love the concert of nudes/ivories/whites in this get-up.  So chic.)  You’ll note that I’ve been exercising some very un-magpie restraint in terms of jewelry/accessory add-ons: Ms. Middleton is rarely seen without a ladylike watch (she sports something like this seriously discounted Stuhrling timepiece — only $110, Endless)…but that’s about as far as she goes.

For more formal events, she gravitates towards v-neck wrap dresses — something like this DVF in a cheering Hermes-esque orange would probably be up her alley ($365, Diane Von Furstenberg):

Orange can be difficult to match with accessories, but a pair of nude pumps never do you wrong, and these puppies are perfection (Rupert Sanderson, $586, MyTheresa):She looked positively regal in the royal blue dress (by Issa — now sold out) she wore for her engagement announcement — what a perfect way of showcasing her sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring (famously, the bauble was Princess Di’s engagement ring as well)!

Achieve a similar look with this belted Milly dress ($420, StyleBop) and a pair of suede heels (the Choo “Cosmics” are a new favorite of mine — just enough of a platform to be fierce, without looking vampy/trampy  — $695, Net-A-Porter):

(These less expensive — $125! — and slightly more aggressive sueded TopShop platforms are another viable option.) If you’re starstruck by the drama of her sapphire dress, check out this Piccadilly Pleats Dress ($158, Madewell):

She might finish with a black tuxedo jacket and an unfussy black clutch, as she did earlier this year.  Alternately, if you’re into the Halston-era vibe she’s channeling in her jersey blue dress, opt for the Halston Heritage number that caused such an uproar last season in a glimmering gem tone, like this emerald or this ruby ($354, MyTheresa):

Either would pop against this gray suede pump — the perfect season-appropriate finish ($114, Lori’s Shoes):

Layer an ivory wool coat — I adore the version she’s sporting below — atop ($230, John Lewis):

Alternately, complete the layered look above by pairing your ivory topper with a silky, long-sleeved dress ($138, Madewell), some tights ($20, Lori’s Shoes), and a pair of sueded, low-heeled boots ($298, Madewell)

Love the idea of an approachable member of the royal family — chin chin to the newly engaged!

Have Yourself a Merry Little Cocktail Dress

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Glitter, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes, Winter Weather on November 18, 2010 at 2:11 pm

When I was six, I marched around our extended family Christmas dinner announcing that I had “seen Santa and his elves” in our driveway the night before.  Of course, the joke was on me, and I remember a vague feeling of frustration and confusion as to why I was only intercepting smirks and over-my-head glance exchanges rather than the expected “oohs” and “aahs.”  But the thing that fascinates me now is that I truly convinced myself that I had seen Santa — I even remember where he was supposedly spotted in my old driveway (under the cherry blossom tree, by the right-hand-side garage door).  The magic of Christmas (its stories, its promises, its traditions) continues to hold an inexplicable, powerful sway over me: I just.love the holidays and their attendant cozy, vaguely excited, rather decadent, curled-up-in-front-of-the-fire feeling.  For that reason, I am positively ecstatic to begin to plan my holiday wardrobe, and particularly thrilled to be on the hunt for festive frocks and merry little cocktail dresses.  This post will, accordingly, be all.about.the.dress.  The cocktail dress — the centerpiece of my wardrobe.  There is nothing I love to buy more than a happy little cocktail dress.  For this holiday season, I’m coveting LRDs (little red dresses), and this Anlo silky dress with its ribbon-accented neckline is just about as good as it gets ($278, Thistle and Clover):

I’d add some sparkly druzy studs (swoon over these Pade Vavra finds — $200, Charm and Chain) and gold heels (these are happily named after one of my favorite celebrities, Giada — Kate Spade, $325, FootCandyShoes):

I saw this inexpensive frothy concoction ($65, Dorothy Perkins) and fell in love — and can’t stop imagining how amazing it would look with a pair of classic gold Louboutin peep-toes ($795, Barney’s):

The only thing this look needs is a glitzy pair of shoulder-grazing earrings ($38, Nordstrom):

I’m also bananas about this brocade-effect Moschino dress (love the Lanvin-esque draping at the shoulder – $1,495, Moschino), which would look beyond adorable with this gorgeous heel (a.dore the oversized, ruffly bow at the toe — Badgley Mischka, $200, PiperLime)

(These puppies also remind me of the gorgeous Miss Cha Cha Christian Louboutin pumps, which are far pricier.)  I like the idea of finishing with this crushed velvet bow clutch ($325, Kate Spade), which reminds me of a crushed green velvet dress I wore a couple of Christmases in a row as a miniMagpie, these sparkling gold clips ($115, Ylang23), and this stack o’ bracelets ($88, Zappos):

Do you not die over this Tibi number ($385, Net-A-Porter)?  Perfect for the holidays with its shimmery, glimmery goodness, especially when paired with unexpected emerald green accents, like these gorgeous studs ($205, Ylang 23), and a pair of classic gold pumps (Louboutin, $585, Brown’s Fashion):

I’d add this dramatic corresponding green cuff bracelet (the tortoises are so precious — $275, Kate Spade) and this roll clutch ($998, Amanda Pearl — but you can get the look for less with this Nordstrom house brand variation):

Go “full glitz” with a pair of “snowflake” style earrings (check it out in all its various stone options — $88, M. Flynn), this gilded lace Milly dress ($400, Net-A-Porter), and some glam gold peep toes ($160, NineWest):

I’d add an oversized-stone bauble or two — loving this chunky bracelet ($98, Ann Taylor), a crystal ring ($78, Henri Bendel), and this smooth roll clutch ($74, Lori’s Shoes):

For more casual affairs — perhaps one of the three cookie exchanges I am heading to in the next few weeks? — I like the idea of a gold top ($525, Marni) with some skinnies and some festive gold flats ($225, Kate Spade):

I’d add these darling earrings ($125, Kate Spade), this chunky bracelet ($68, Ann Taylor), and this precious ivory satin clutch (I want this in every color it comes in — $88, J. Crew):

And though I’ve been doing some major lip service to gold glitter, let’s not forget about glitzy silvery sparkle, as in this darling sparkle stripe dress ($238, Dusen Dusen):

You could go one of two ways with this dress, either dressing it up majorly with a blingy necklace ($325, Charm and Chain), a glitzy bag ($128, J. Crew), and some glam heels ($135, Heels):

OR dress it down a touch (making the get-up more appropriate for day-time activities) with a glitzy headband ($52, Wink) and these kicky flats ($189, Pretty Ballerinas):

Finally, consider pulling something otherwise straight-forward out of your closet, like this sandy-colored neutral sweater dress (Marc by Marc Jacobs, $270, Net-A-Porter), and glam it up with some champagne pumps ($114, Lori’s Shoes) and a glitzy bag (d.i.e. over this Marc Jacobs piece — $1,012, Farfetch):

D.i.e., especially with these glitzy earrings ($95, Kate Spade):

Have yourself a merry little cocktail!

A Shoe In

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Jewelry, Neutrals, Polka Dot, Pop of Red, Shoes on November 16, 2010 at 12:02 pm

I visited my ever-chic, ever-generous baby sister up in NYC this past weekend and had planned to run a post on the major trends I’d spotted amongst  the women of the Big Apple.  The task was gargantuan — and ultimately impossible, as fashion is as varied as it comes up there.  As my sister put it: “I can try out any look I want here, and no one bats an eye.  Sequins at 8 am?  No problem.  You see it all here.”  So as much as I want to reduce the sensory overload that is NYC to a simple fashion equation (one scarf plus one camel jacket plus one pair of tweed heels = chic pea in the city), the best I can do is underscore the one commonality between a number of the uber-chic femmes I saw up there: serious footwear.  I’m not talking about the refined equestrian boots that appear time and time again amongst DC’s sartorially-minded set, or the platform heels that have been all.over the fashion mags for the last two seasons (Brain Atwood must have made a fortune over that period thanks to his “Maniac” pumps) — I’m talking about motorcycle boots, heavy-looking leather booties, and other  “I-walk-on-the-wild-side” footwear designs.  When I saw Habitual Jeans‘ 2010 ad campaign, I thought — “Hm, I’m not so sure about this.”  Apparently, the women of NYC are.

And get this: I seriously dug the devil-may-care edge it imparted upon often otherwise all-black getups, even if I can’t envision myself totally inhabiting the “rebel with a cause” persona.  Let’s consider adapting the look to our own needs.  I think you’d look impossibly chic sporting a silky top ($185, Reiss), some skinnies, and a slouchy pair of suede boots ($220, TheOutnet):

Finish with a coordinating tweedy coat ($545, Barney’s), a long knotted necklace ($52, Madewell), a gleaming gold watch (a.dore roman numeral numbering on a watch face — Freelook, $199, Endless), and an of-the-season cross-body bag in rich cognac leather ($348, Steven Alan):

Not so sure about the buckled suede style?  Perhaps some fierce booties are more up your alley.  The “it” shoe in this category has got to be the Alexander McQueen biker bootie:

A bit too fierce for you?  Go for a black suede bootie with a twist instead ($89, Miss Selfridge), and keep the rest of your look refined, pulled-together, and slightly Kate-Spade-esque with a ruffly polka-dot blouse ($24.50, Old Navy), and a pair of black skinnies:

Class it up with some cluster pearl earrings ($60, Carolee) and a tangled, knotted bracelet ($49, Juliet and Company) — and don’t forget the red nail polish (I’m still bananas over Essie’s Geranium color):

Finish with my fav.o.rite bag of the season — now on sale! — the Kate Spade “Five Points Camille” in fiery orange ($333, Kate Spade):

Lace has been big this season, and I saw my fair share of lace-adorned footwear this weekend.  For inspiration, check out the ever-chic Olivia Palermo (I.love.her) in these sky-high Charlotte Olympia lace booties (somehow I don’t think she’d survive long pedaling in those puppies…)

Image from {the sartorialist}

Adapt the look a bit by scaling back on the leather-and-lace combo with a feminine top in cheering cherry red ($450, Marni), a fuller skirt ($425, La Garconne), these fierce (and affordable!) pumps (on sale for $80, Lori’s Shoes):

I like the idea of finishing with some art-decor vintage Dior studs ($310, ASOS), a polished gold bracelet ($42, Juliet and Company), and an eye-catching gold cut-out clutch ($55, French Connection):

I’ve been seeing a lot of dramatical ridge-soled boots this season — a.lot.  I’m not so much on board with this trend — it looks like it’s trying too hard.  (I feel the same way about heeled flip flops — why can’t you just do what you’re supposed to do, and do it well?)  I mean — what do you want me to do with these?

They confuse me.  If you’re into the aesthetic but share my reservations, consider scaling back and test-driving the look with some otherwise classically-structured pumps (Camilla Skovgaard, $475, Scoop NYC):

Make it work with a charcoal-on-white scarf ($195, Virginia Johnson), a silky chalk-colored shirt ($118, Madewell), a black pencil skirt ($175, Karen Millen)

As for accessories: a pair of gem-studded earrings (Judith Jack, $169, Zappos) and a chic doctor’s bag are the way to go ($498, Steven Alan):

That’s all she wrote for now — more on NYC fashion to come!

Fur REAL?!?

In Accessories, Fur, Jewelry, Leopard, Neutrals, Shoes, Winter Weather on November 12, 2010 at 2:35 am

When I was rushing sororities at the University of Virginia in the dead of winter years ago, I decided that I’d sport a pair of mittens I’d inherited from my grandmother.  The fact that I’d inherited a pair of mittens should clue you in to the fact that these were no ordinary hand warmers.  No no — they were made of real cheetah fur, and they probably cost a fortune.  I wore them unthinkingly, only knowing that they looked chic…that is, until a sorority sister at one of the houses gasped in dismay when she saw me slipping my little paws out of them.  “Are those…real?!”  (Insert contorted look of pain and shock.)  I was off that sorority “return list” as quickly as you could say “Delta Gamma Kappa.”  The experience has made me extremely hesitant to talk about / own up to owning real fur — the last thing I want to do is offend or upset anyone.  As a result, I had a lengthy internal debate over whether or not to feature a post on the fur trend that is so mega this season.  I know that some of my lovely readers will be less-than-thrilled (ahem, my own sister), but this season has proved that the vrai and the faux can be equally chic, so — if nothing else, just know that a lot more of the fur you’re seeing on the streets nowadays is the fake stuff.  (And if you’re OK with the real deal — this is your time to shine.)  With that caveat out of the way, let me present some (guilt-free) furry mittens (and corresponding fur tippet) to add to your repertoire this season ($85 for mittens; $75 for tippet,  Juicy Couture):

How adorable would either be, paired with a pop-of-red coat ($49, Old Navy)?

Or channel Dries Van Noten — must admit, I was totally drawn to this look when it strutted itself on down the runway.  Utilitarianista-meets-NYC-chic-meets-I’m-vaguely-European:

{images from Style.com}

Get the look with your own faux fur scarf ($48, Lord and Taylor), an olivette cargo shirt ($110, Madewell), and some skinnies:

I’ve lately been seriously loving a pair of mid-calf taupey-suede boots I bought at a boutique in Rome two years ago, and I’m going to go ahead and continue to love the proportions by promoting these to.die.for Giuseppe Zanottis ($1,095, Zoe):

(These $260 House of Harlows might be a good second choice if you’re not in the market for such an investment piece.)  Finish with this sueded duffel handbag ($198, Madewell) and some gleaming gold accents, like these flat-head enorma-studs ($45, Gorjana), a thin stack of bangles ($75, LuvCharlie), and a slightly masculine watch (Michael Kors, $225, Bloomingdale’s):

If the leopard’s too loud, why not this faux fur neck warmer from Loft ($39, Ann Taylor Loft) paired with an ivory coat?

I d.i.e. over this minimalista collarless Reed Krakoff coat (a label that’s been thrown around a lot lately, and has been developing some serious brand equity amongst the jet-set — and with good reason; this coat rings in at $1,890 at Net-A-Porter), and think that if you paired it with the fur collar above and a classic brown pointy-toed pump ($79, Zara) and a top-handle bag (ugh I want this Prada tote bad.ly — $1,995, Barneys), you’d be all class:

(For a more affordable, but equally elegant, outerwear option in fetching winter white, try this $325 J. Crew double-cloth bonbon coat in sea salt.)  For casual wear, my Adam by Adam Lippes coyote fur vest (purchased on mega sale via Gilt Groupe in the middle of last summer) has seen heavy rotation so far this season — this TopShop gilet is an affordable option ($110, TopShop) if you’re looking for one:

I’ve been pairing mine with silky blouses like this one ($98, Madewell), skinnies, and statement footwear, like these sueded boots ($229, My Wardrobe):

Add a pair of cat-eye shades (Dior, $295, Saks) and a slouchy leather bag in an unexpected pop-of-green color ($375, J. Crew) — it’ll really stand out in a chic-mismatch way against the greige getup:

Once again, polished gold is the.way.to.go — as with these gold nugget studs I’ve already featured several times (I.want — $85, BingBang), a timeless Hermes enamel bangle ($460, Hermes), a classic gold bangle (Kate Spade, $28, PiperLime), and the watch I featured above:

I’m also seriously coveting textured, cropped coats these days (as I mentioned yesterday in the {magpie covets} section), and this shaggy Jaeger London jacket ($288, My Wardrobe) has my name written all over it:

Leery of the full-on fur coat look?  Just check out this little chic pea:

{images from the blonde salad}

The best part?  The jacket is faux (are you shocked?) — and is actually from the Lanvin for H&M collection set to debut on the 17th of this month.  Proof you can rock a faux fur and make it look like a million bucks.  I like the classic styling she’s paired the jacket with — though I’m kinda into the idea of  test-driving wider-leg jeans (not wide-leg — more like bootcut…baby steps) with a jacket like this.  I’m thinking a bow-front blouse tucked into (key that you tuck it in — and I am in love with this Marc Jacobs blouse — $795, Nordstrom — but am sure that you can find something comparable and several hundred dollars cheaper at Forever21 or Anthropologie) a pair of slightly higher-waisted, darkwash, bootcut jeans (Seven for All Mankind, $155, PiperLime):

I like the look finished with a platform pump — I’m envisioning the sick (yes — sick applies; I hate that word, but there’s no other way to describe their fierce glamor) pair of YSL platform suede heels I picked up just before the wedding, but these affordable Jessica Simpson brand platforms caught my eye the other day, and I think they’d be an ideal sub ($89, PiperLime):

I like it paired with an unexpected orange tote ($175, John Lewis) and a coral lip:

Adore.

I apologize for this abbreviated post, but I am NYC-bound first thing in the a.m. — visiting my little sis for a weekend of fun in the Big Apple.  I’m sure I’ll have lots to report early next week!

The Ol’ Black and Tan

In Accessories, Jewelry, Leopard, Neutrals, Shoes, Winter Weather, Work Wear on November 10, 2010 at 11:17 am

I’ve talked about this a.lot, but neutrals have been my best friend this season.  I’ve been particularly drawn to pairing nudes/mushrooms/greiges/taupes with black — the pairing somehow looks put-together, chic, and upscale with minimal effort.  I’m particulary into blouses in a subdued palette, like this two-tone Chris & Jamie top ($196, Thistle and Clover), paired with black skinnies (love my J. Brands), and an unexpectedly flouncey clutch  (adore the rosette style — $65, TopShop):

I’d finish with an oversized-bead necklace (Marni, $360, Net-A-Porter) and some pointy-toed black flats ($168, Simply Soles):

I’m also loving the idea of a straight-forward black tee dress (on super sale for $69, Hayden-Hartnett) beneath this minimalista-chic topper (adore the unfussy shape — on sale for $49, Spiegel):

Spruce up with some leopard footwear — I’ve got the flats and the pumps, but am I bold enough to channel Olivia Palermo with a pair of feminine leopard booties?  (She owns these Charlotte Olympias.)  I’ll probably stick with a classic flat — these Lanvins have been on my lust list for the past few months ($525, Zoe):

Round it out with a slouchy statement leather bag (on sale for $275, J. Crew), some serious earcandy ($48, J. Crew), and a stack of bangles ($98 for 3, Henri Bendel):

Earlier this season, I snapped up a silky cargo dress similar in shape and styling to this See by Chloe number (on sale for $142, The Outnet), which I like pairing with pumps in my favorite fabric of the season: suede (Charles David, $124, Zappos):

I’d add some eye-catching studs, like these vintage Chanels ($577, ASOS) and a coordinating black suede tote (love the exaggerated tassel accent! –Vanessa Bruno, $522, Matches):

Alternately, for a slightly dressier affair, I’m loving this feminine Tucker dress ($425, Net-A-Porter) paired with glossy pointy toed flats (Sam Edelman, $99, Zappos) and a ladylike barrel bag ($495, Henri Bendel):

The only thing I’d add?  Some fetching earrings ($20, TopShop) and a classic camel coat ($240, John Lewis):

For casual weekend wear, I like a drapey, oversized, cape-esque knit top in cozy cashmere (I’m into dolman sleeves in a big way this season — on sale for $130, Uniqlo) paired with leggings and structured black low-wedge boots ($500, Jade24):

Offset it all with an unexpected nude tote ($96, Lori’s Shoes), some chain-accented studs ($160, My Sugarland), and a statement piece necklace ($93, Zappos):

I’d probably layer it all beneath a gauzey leopard scarf ($78, Madison LA):

Another choice low key outfit in the appointed palette?  A nude blouse (Joie, $195, Thistle and Clover) paired with black skinnies and some amazing two-tone flats ($191, Pretty Ballerinas):

I like a little black envelope flap bag ($88, J. Crew) as the accoutrement –

And maybe a no-nonsense pair of solid gold studs ($85, Bing Bang NYC) and a polished gold bracelet ($175, CCSkye):

Alternately, how beyond is this little camel knit turtleneck sweater (which Olivia Palermo was spotted in just a week or two ago, and which I featured on my {magpie covets} page — she is too chic! — $435, Les Nouvelles) with some black skinnies and booties ($398, Scoop NYC):

I’d add coordinating bangles (House of Harlow, $113, Nordstrom) and a glossy gold ring ($150, CCSkye):

Alternately, go with a patterned black and tan palette with this See By Chloe shift, paired with these feminine booties (Miu Miu, $551, Farfetch):

Add a layered necklace (Jill Golden Cheyne, $290, Les Nouvelles) and a glossy handbag (Phillip Lim, $795, La Garconne):

You can’t  go wrong with these basics.  Which is your favorite look?

A Wintry Mix

In Accessories, Glitter, Jewelry, Romantic, Shoes, Tweed, Winter Weather on November 9, 2010 at 11:23 am

I spent quite a bit of time “talking holiday logistics” with my girlfriends this past weekend, and then received not one — not two — but three invitations to holiday cookie exchanges today.   We are officially headed towards holiday season, and it appears that my December is already gobbled up with delicious, felicitous little activities.  This makes me want to buy a slew of “holiday shimmer” pieces to mix and match — no cocktail dresses (yet), just skirts and blouses and happy, sparkly accents.  The first thing on my lust list?  A silky little blouse in fetching cream-on-blush ($175, Reiss) tucked into this perfect-for-the-holidays tiered skirt by Diane Von Furstenberg ($385, DVF):

Finish with these made-for-the-skirt Kate Spade heels (swoon — these are my aesthetic, to a tee! — on sale for $225, Simply Soles) and a silvery-gray-mineral envelope clutch in textured calf-hair ($198, Jessica Jensen):

Finish with some sparkling enorma-studs ($140, Ben Amun), a coordinating deco bracelet (Badgley Mischka, $285, Charm and Chain), and a classy ivory topper ($595, Rebecca Taylor):

I am equally smitten with this shimmery-sweet metallic-thread dress ($325, Net-A-Porter) with some classic gold pumps ($625, BrownsFashion):

Any gold clutch’d do, but this Barney’s version is pretty much picture perfect with this look ($750, Barney’s) — as are these be.yond gorgeous vintage Christian Dior studs (be still my heart — $534, ASOS):

Love the casual cargo style in the dressy silky fabric, done up with ladylike accents.  Perfect.  Go for a slightly less-dressy look with this t-shirt style dress ($248, French Connection) and a pair of ladylike flats ($99, Simply Soles):

Finish with some sparkling enorma-studs ($410, Net-A-Porter) and a pearl bracelet ($85, Carolee):

Alternately, how about tucking this glittery tee ($325, La Garconne) with a boucle ivory mini ($225, Rebecca Taylor):

Layer on a sparkling necklace ($110, Ben Amun) and finish with some glitzy heels ($200, Nordstrom):

Die over the idea of slipping a capelet on top (Vanessa Bruno, $885, Farfetch):

Alternately, pair the above capelet with some skinnies and a lovely pair of satin flats ($64, Endless):

Finish with some blingy ear candy ($65, Carolee), a gold-accented ring ($129, Zappos), and a coordinating blush over-the-shoulder bag ($395, Lauren Merkin):

(You may also need a little perk-me-up when you take off your statement cape, so consider this gorgeous Marni-esque beaded necklace — $315, Vionnet Boutique:

Don’t you love and adore?!)  Another chic daywear-with-holiday-flair look?  A heathered tee ($55, J. Crew) beneath a mongolian fur vest (on sale for $288, My Wardrobe), with jeans:

Finish with some sparkly flats ($59, PiperLime), a glittery clutch (a.dore this J. Crew style and want it in both colors it comes in, including this sleek graphite — $138, J. Crew) and a bow ring (Juicy Couture, $68, Zappos):

Love.  If you’re a golden gal, consider pairing a neutral, blousey top ($325, La Garconne) with a wrapped-bead necklace in gold ($123, Charm and Chain) and a stack of glittering bangles ($140, Charm and Chain):

Finish with jeans and some glittery heels ($160, Nine West) for a festive look:

Pair with this beaded tweed clutch ($198, J. Crew):

And speaking of tweed — how much do you die over this silky tweed top ($210, The Outnet), paired with skinny jeans and these embellished tweed pumps ($225, Nordstrom)?

Finish with this gorgeous “ice princess” bib necklace ($595, Kate Spade) and a chain handle bag ($225, Henri Bendel):

I don’t know about you, but I’m loving the fashion forecast…

SOLE-mates

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Intimates, Jewelry, Leopard, Shoes on November 3, 2010 at 10:49 am

You’ve likely heard that perfectly matching your shoes to your handbag (or to any other element of your outfit) is passe — old-fashioned and too…too.  But sometimes you find a shoe that pairs just about perfectly with another item in your closet, and you can’t contain your excitement — as in the cases below.  And let’s face it: sometimes breaking a fashion rule or two ain’t a bad thing!  Why do you think heels are now a staple in daywear (much to my delight — and to the delight of other 5’1 chic peas around the world)?  At one point not so long ago, sporting stilettos in the workplace meant that you moonlighted in a somewhat risque industry, if you catch my drift.  Consider, for example, these uh.may.zing (and shockingly affordable) glittery pumps I bought for my bachelorette party last year ($79, Nordstrom):

(Have a Tiffany complex?  Snag these comparable — and more expensive — Giuseppe Zanottis for $595).  Sigh.  Love.  Must admit this look has been heavily inspired by this shot from CherryBlossomGirl’s blog:

Looks like the puppies featured above were made.to.go with this Anya Hindmarch clutch ($395, Diani Boutique), these drusy studs ($198, Scoop), and this stud ring ($80, Noir Jewelry), n’est-ce pas?

This silky Stella McCartney playsuit would be a lovely, elegant base for your evening wear ($195, Net-A-Porter) — or even while primping, slipped beneath this little silky robe ($358, Journelle):

More into the gold, less into platinum/silver?  Test-drive these Steve Madden puppies ($89, Nordstrom) — they’re almost too over the top to be acceptable, but for NYE or a trip to Vegas?  Why not?!

Ideal for this necklace ($135, Nordstrom), this clutch (do you not love the Lady GaGa-esque bow clasp?! — $58, eBags), and this beyond watch ($150, Swell):

Cinch the waist of your LBD with this sparkling belt ($24, J. Crew) and offset your look with this glittery eye-shadow quad by Bobbi Brown ($40, Neiman Marcus) and a spritz of Coco Mademoiselle ($61 and up, Sephora):

Finish by adding a little shimmer with this Nars body oil (I have this — and it smells de.lic.ious — $59, Sephora):

Finally, noir glitter is tres of-the-moment, and these puppies are all kinds of hot ($200, Zappos):

Made for this clutch ($60, J. Crew), a spritz of Fracas ($95, Sephora), and some falsies (I used these for a recent evening event and LOVED them — $18, Sephora):

Pair with this glitzy necklace ($96, John Lewis) or this glitzy Antik Batik jacket ($575, Net-A-Porter):

If you’re less into the glitzy, frou-frou side of things, test drive these naughty-meets-nice Chinese Laundry booties ($84, Lori’s Shoes) — lately I’ve been more and more interested in the bootie:

Perfect with this chiffon floral clutch ($98, Lori’s Shoes) or this fabric statement necklace (on sale for $98, Farfetch):

Meshes perfectly with this chiffon tank ($49, Madewell) — and some lacy unmentionables beneath ($62 for top, $36 for bottom — Cosabella):

Use this over.the.top Valentino tote if you need a roomier bag ($2,400, Net-A-Porter):

Switching gears entirely, I’ve been seriously sweating tassel accents this season, and these Tory Burch flats ($225, Net-A-Porter) have made it all the way to my “winter lust list,” as I’ve been looking to invest in classic flats with a twist:

Seriously made for this Anya Hindmarch tassel tote ($950, Scoop) and this Lanvin layered chain necklace ($1,190, Farfetch):

Tuck your personals in this little Comme des Garcons pouch ($98, ShopBird) — and consider layering this tassel-print cami/boyshort combo beneath your get-up ($105 for set, Net-A-Porter):

Now, I’ve been blabbing left and right about these amazing Nine West finds — l.o.v.e. them and insist on wearing them with my cropped black minnies to work at least once a week — but I’m gonna go ahead and feature these puppies again ($88, Zappos):

Pretty much made for this minaudiere ($350, Rebecca Minkoff), especially with this patterned tube of mascara (Helena Rubenstein, $48, Amazon) and this Guerlain eyeliner for your smokey cats eye ($35, Nordstrom):

This necklace ($115, LesNouvelles) would be the perfect accoutrement…and even though I think that adding more a leopard would be total overkill and would send you to Cruella De Ville territory, I have to admit that I’ve been hunting high and low for an affordable leopard swing coat lately, and have to share my dream pick (on a dream budget…$1,450, Tory Burch):

{Swoon.}  And if I can’t have the jacket, I’ll gladly take these gloves ($198, Henri Bendel):

Underneath it all, this grown up Mimi by Demaris set is beyond precious ($80 for top, $60 for bottom — Net-A-Porter):

Speaking of swooning, how un.be.liev.a.ble are these Brian Atwoods ($720, FootCandyShoes)?

Adore the bow at the back, and would pair with these killer Lanvin earrings ($920, Net-A-Porter), this stack-o-bangles ($88, Zappos), and a classic navy blazer ($188, J. Crew):

Perfect with this grosgrain, bow-accented, and Lanvin-esque bag ($55, TopShop — for the real deal, check out this $1,760 Lanvin lovely) — and by the way, I’m completely unbothered by the clash of navy and black, as long as you keep the remainder of the outfit simple: skinny black or dark denim jeans and a silky white blouse.

Alternately, do you not adore these Zanotti flats ($449, Bluefly)?  Perfect with a long chain necklace ($54, PiperLime) and this darling rope chain belt ($150, Scoop):

This sueded chain-trim bag seals the deal ($98, ASOS):

And finally — because I have a hunch that this is where we’re headed next after a season of beige/taupe/camel neutrals — I’m drawn to a bold, neo-graphic, near-geometric color block style shoe.  Based on what I’ve seen at Celine and Lanvin, I’m convinced that deeply saturated colors are next up on the “it list.”  And shoes like this will be all.the.rage (on sale for only $41, Heels):

(And this shoe in particular is reminiscent of Giambattista Valli’s elegant, uber-feminine heels from this past season.)  Pair with a deeply colored silk bag (I’m loving either this bow-bedecked Valentino — $795, Net-A-Porter — or this minimalista-chic “Palm Beach” clutch — $425, Barney’s) and a classic red pout (Chanel, $15, Amazon):

Add a sparkling bib necklace ($198, Henri Bendel) on top and this gorgeous canary yellow satin undergarment set ($560 for top, $430 for bottom, Net-A-Porter — pricey, yes, but gorgeous, and I set a bad spending precedent in the lingerie department thanks to my wedding/honeymoon preparations):

Inspired?  Tell me about your favorite bag-and-shoe combo!

Olivette

In Accessories, Jewelry, Leopard, Plaid, Pop of Red, Shoes, Winter Weather, Work Wear on November 2, 2010 at 11:06 am

I stepped out of my comfort zone last week by wearing a pair of army green, relaxed-fit chinos rolled up at the ankle instead of my go-to dark-wash skinny jeans.  I at first felt a bit flustered by this fashion risk (“is this me?!”), but wound up sneaking glances of myself in every mirror I passed that day and thinking, “Yes, this is good.”  I’ll admit that my get-up was not the result of a personal “eureka” — I was totally inspired by the casual-glam note Gwyneth Paltrow struck in her Current/Elliott “Captain pants.”

Something about the  look just felt fresh and unexpected and modern.  So I adapted, pairing a solid black crewneck sweater (Vince, $235, Barney’s) with some olive green pants (rolled up at the ankle — mine were the army green “Waverly chinos” from J. Crew, which are no longer available online, but Paltrow’s are Current/Elliott’s are available for $160 at Net-A-Porter) and a pair of leopard flats (mine are by Ann Taylor, and are now on sale for only $99!)

I tied it all together with a  tangly chain necklace with a bow tie in the back (Suzanna Dai, $200, Charm and Chain), a taupey scarf ($86, Tobi), and a thin patent nude leather belt:

I so enjoyed the look that I found myself rifling through my closet for other olive green pieces for incorporation into my work wardrobe for this upcoming week.  I love the newness of the color as a neutral and the slight “edge” it lends to any outfit.  This season, I’ve been big into the idea of wearing unexpected/”tougher-than-average” button-downs with the classic lines of a pencil skirt, and I plan to do so this week with my newfound army green obsession.  I’ll pair my olive green shirt (similar to this $110 Madewell lovely) with a black wool pencil skirt ($130, TheOutnet):

Finish with a pair of classic, glossy-black Louboutins ($595, Net-A-Porter) and this amazing Burberry tote ($295, Farfetch):

Spruce things up with a pair of rope-edged studs (love the silver-on-gold style of these Rachel Leighs — $70, Charm and Chain) and a statement necklace ($195, Charm and Chain):

I’m also loving the idea of this thick wool, army green felted cape jacket by DVF ($395, Net-A-Porter) with a fur collar (Adrienne Landau, $295, Intermix):

I’d layer it atop an olive-striped tee (on sale for $25, J. Crew), black skinny jeans, and black booties (dig the buckle — $330, ShoptheShoebox):

As for jewelry?  A pair of sparkling studs ($125, Charm and Chain) and this Fenton-Fallon “swag” necklace ($395, Barney’s) — I would rely on them to add some much-needed glitz to the get-up:

A contrasting pop-of-red bag seems like the perfect finish, and I l.o.v.e. the retro shape of this top-handle bag (Lulu Guinness, $695, Coggles):

Another idea for work?  Swap out your typical black or gray skirt for an olive green version (this one is on sale for $63 at Bloomingdale’s and I l-o-v-e the little buckles on the pockets) and pair with an uber-feminine silky blouse (this one is by Stella McCartney and is no longer available, but I’ve had it in my style file for so long because it is just per.fect; for something similar, check out this $390 Lanvin at Net-A-Porter):

I kind of like the way it’s styled here, with opaque black tights and glossy black pumps, although I’d probably opt away from the platform in this case in order to play up the femininity of the top and ensure the proper balance.  I might even swap in a pair of pointy-toed flats with a contrast-in-texture, like these snakeskin Elizabeth & James flats ($265, Zoe), and finish with this quilted satchel ($425, Brahmin):

The only thing missing?  A clinking military-inspired charm bracelet (love this Carolee style — $69, Zappos) and some glammed-up earrings (I’m majorly drawn to these Fenton-Fallons, $309, ASOS):

For something a bit more casual, how pitch-perfect is this militarista-chic cape (Juicy Couture, $380, Net-A-Porter) paired with these amazing Loeffler Randall army-green boots (if you can’t afford the leather Mathilde, these are an easy way of getting the style for less! — $195, Loeffler Randall):

Beneath, pair a cozy sweater ($49, A.E.) with some skinnies and amazing Prada tote (d.i.e. over this one , and so does my bank account — $2,300, Barney’s):

Pair with these “coin” earrings ($95, Alexis Bittar) and this un.be.lievable Hermes wrap bracelet (sigh…$445, Hermes):

I’m also loving the idea of a tweedy camel blazer ($199, Talbots) atop a silken plaid button down ($110, Madewell) and denim skinnies:

Finish with statement boots — I’m inclined towards these Fendis ($695, Farfetch), paired with this Madewell tote ($158, Madewell) –

but the gutsier amongst you might be willing to test drive the trendy shoes of the season: military-inspired lace-up ankle boots, like these Tory Burches ($450, Net-A-Porter):

Goes hand-in-hand with this Madewell tote ($98, Madewell):

Alternately, how much do you love the idea of pairing an army green cargo shirt (Elizabeth and James, $245, Net-A-Porter) with a skinny, lived-in-leather belt ($85, Toast) and a khaki skirt (See by Chloe, on sale for $85, TheOutnet):

Add a rich leather tote ($135, TopShop) and some super-high-heels ($875, Net-A-Porter):

Picture perfect when paired with this cheery red wool cape ($389, Isabella Oliver):

And if none of the above outfits speak to you, test-drive the color by casually mixing in an olive accessory with your other neutrals.  I’m thinking of this cozy knit scarf ($72, ShopTwigs) or this waxed-leather Rebecca Minkoff cross-body bag ($295, MuseTen):

Or — more my cup of tea — this canvas-and-leather tote ($120, J.W. Hulme):

Are you ready to enlist in the trend?
