PLAID-itudes

In Accessories, Jewelry, Plaid, Pop of Red, Shoes, Winter Weather, Work Wear on October 28, 2010 at 10:20 am

Any girl that attended Catholic school from first grade through her senior year of high school (ahem, me…) is bound to have  a love-hate relationship with plaid.  On the one hand, it conjures memory of itchy kilts, strict rules, and…well, school.  On the other hand, the uniform made life so easy and truly sharpened my fashion sense (hey, even a headband served as a platform for self-expression).  And even I can appreciate that all plaids are not made equal — some evoke a preppy New England vibe; others, a slightly rebellious grunge aesthetic (I don’t go near the latter…)  At any rate, this season has been chock-a-block full of eye-catching plaid pieces, and I particularly appreciate the mash up of the utilitarian-militarista-plaid looks I’ve seen by the likes of Rag & Bone and Dries Van Noten, among others.  How to get the look without appearing like a vampy schoolgirl?  One safe bet is a plaid topper, like this toggle cape ($268, Steven Alan):

(Alternately, get the look for less with this $89 Zara version.)  Pair with jeans and some lived-in boots (there is something I just adore about the updated-cowgirl styling of these Sigerson Morrisons — $382, TheOutnet):

Add a utilitarian-chic tote ($230, Clare Vivier) and some classy brown leather gloves $250, for good measure

Meanwhile, how about this shrunken blazer (love the contrast-fabric beneath the collar — $160, TopShop) with a pair of plaid shorts (now, I know I said I was on the fence, but there’s something so…to die for about this combo! — $65, TopShop):

Perfect with a rich-looking tote (Alexander Wang has that it factor right now — $1,300, Liberty) and some heathered flats (I just adore these cap-toed flannel Lanvins — $500, Bergdorf Goodman):

Alternately, why not pair this shawl-collar sweater (A.P.C., $310, La Garconne) with a wool skirt (Alexander Wang, $425, Net-A-Porter — note that you can find a FAR more affordable version of this skirt at Old Navy for only $23…)

Add your pop-of-plaid with this cozy Gap scarf ($29, Gap) and then up the hot factor with these killer Rupert Sanderson cut-out booties ($527, MyTheresa):

Finish with  tweed headband (Jennifer Ouellette, $60, Barney’s) and this suede shopper ($650, Barney’s) — something about the contrast in textures and tweeds updates the whole look and brings into fashion-forward territory, without making you look like a nut:

For a similar but slightly bolder aesthetic, go flannel-on-flannel for a truly winterized look with a cozy gray blazer ($375, Steven Alan) — I’d wear it with the collar flipped up! — a silky blouse ($78, Nordstrom), and a plaid mini($29, OldNavy):

(P.S.: If you’re a label snob — no judgment — check out this $525 Burberry variation of the plaid kilt.  Lovely, lovely.)  Add classic Loeffler Randall Matildes ($695, Loeffler Randall) and a heathered Yves St. Laurent tote ($600, Farfetch) for a polished finish:

Channel Blair Waldorf with a pristine white blouse (Vanessa Bruno, $350, Net-A-Porter) tucked into a plaid skirt ($135, La Garconne):

I like the skirt waist worn a little high and the top neatly tucked in for the perfect modern silhouette.  Top with this darling camel-colored felt cape ($378, Juicy Couture — note that MaxStudio has an olive green hued variation of the cape below on sale for $78!):

I like the slouchy look of the coat against the prim-and-proper get-up.  In my mind, a “grown-up” shoe is in order, like this chic suede pseudo-bootie (more flattering because of the low-cut front — on sale for $124, Nine West):

Or — if you dare — some seriously fierce footwear, like these Louboutins:

And this to.die.for, tres chic Prada bag would not only complete the look, but  send any fashion-lover into a fit of delight ($2,100, Barney’s):

Glossy gold accents are most definitely the way to go by way of additional accents — they feel weighty and “grown up” in the comparison to the plaid skirt.  I like the idea of these gold disc studs (Gorjana, $35, PiperLime), this chunky Fallon ring ($215, ASOS), and this heavy chain bracelet ($138, A Bientot):

This forest green scarf would truly tie everything together ($295, Barney’s):

One thing I’ve done quite a bit this season?  Tucked various blouses and button-downs into one of my two go-to black pencil skirts.  I recently wore a plaid button down (in a dressier cotton fabric — don’t think this will quite work with a flannel; something like this $158 Steven Alan blouse would work) tucked into a high-waisted black skirt ($130, TheOutnet) and some pointy-toed black flats (Sam Edelman on sale for $42, 6pm):

This ladylike red handbag rounds it all out (Kate Spade, $325, Nordstrom):

I’m all about the tassel these days…

Now, while I’m have lots of fun imagining these skirt-and-blouse/sweater get-ups, my go-to “putzing around the apartment” outfit consists of a plaid tunic or oversized shirt (like the Rag & Bone tie-waisted one below — $355, Les Nouvelles — but Urban Outfitters has a fairly similar one for an affordable $48), leggings (I get mine from American Apparel for $26/pop), and my Tory Burch rabbit fur mukluks (I adore them — and they look very similar to these Manitobas — $280, Gravity Pope).  I can’t help it — it’s just about the coziest outfit on earth.  I’m sure Mr. Magpie is sick of seeing me in it…

I feel snuggled already.  If I were heading outside of the apartment, I’d swap out the mukukuks for some leather boots ($298, Madewell) and add a rich leather tote (Michael Kors, $1,195, Net-A-Porter):

Alternately, I’d pair a plaid button down (as you can probably tell, I always go for red-based plaids — See By Chloe, $110, The Outnet) with some black skinnies (I live in my J. Brands — $180, Net-A-Porter)

Pair with some Minnetonka boots ($85, Shoes – but save 15% with coupon code 15OFF), aviators ($165, Ray-Ban), and an oversized gold watch (Michael Kors, $250, Nordstrom):

Finish with a be-tasseled Mulberry tote (swoon — $1,250, Mulberry) and — if you are daring — a mongolian fur vest, a la Olivia Palermo (chic-pea that she is — Michael Kors, $325, Net-A-Porter):

Finally, for just a POP of the trend, why not spruce up an LBD or a minimalista black-cropped-pants-and-black-sweater for work with this bold buffalo check tote ($74, ShopRuche)?

Alternately, how darn chic is this Lauren Moffatt bomber ($390, Lauren Moffatt)?!  For that matter, I loved the entire tartan collection she had out for Fall 2010.  I featured the bomber earlier this season and several of you mentioned how much you wanted it…sigh.

I like the idea of pairing any of the above toppers with a plain white tee, an understated pair of dark-wash denim, and some bright red flats (on sale for $62, Kurt Geiger):

Being as enamored of accessories as I am, I’d likely layer on a necklace (I l.o.v.e. this affordable little chain necklace! — $59, Talbots) and a pair of sparkly sunburst enorma-studs ($125, Charm and Chain):

Are you plaided out by now?  Which look was your favorite?

Flat Out

In Accessories, Jewelry, Leopard, Pop of Red, Shoes, Winter Weather, Work Wear on October 26, 2010 at 11:27 am

I’ve been on the hunt for an everyday flat in camel/nude, but my progress continues to stymie thanks to the ridiculously adorable patterned options out there.  Grrr.  I hate when — in the course trying to be practical and responsible — a wealth of delicious temptations materialize and lure you away from your lofty goals.  Hence the state of my closet: jam-packed with lovable statement pieces and sorely lacking in some of the basics.  (It’s just bor.ing. to by straight-forward pencil skirts and cardigans.  I mean, I need ‘em, and I own ‘em, but when it comes down to it, the glee of a flashy new pump will always outweigh the comfort of knowing that I have a nice pair of black pants.  Maybe that’s just me…)  Consider the smile-inducing perfection of these Jeffrey Campbell suede-and-rabbit flats ($112, Lori’s Shoes):

Don’t you just love the idea of wearing them with an otherwise straight-forward, non-frou-frou get-up, like a knit poncho (I own and adore the $20 H&M version below), a pair of skinnies, and a luxe leather bag (Henri Lou, $250, Cusp)?

I suppose I should be aware by now of my weakness for flats with a toe adornment: I love an oversized bow, a pom-pom, a feather.  Anything that adds a festive little element of the frou-frou.  Like these “jellie” flats by Vivienne Westwood ($130, Zappos):

Perfect, in my mind, with an otherwise neutral outfit, like a black cashmere crewneck and this luxe cashmere-wool blend skirt (Carven, $470, Net-A-Porter):

Add some cluster pearl earrings ($60, Carolee) and a matching pearl bracelet ($50, Juliet and Company):

And then round it all out with a sophisticated black leather tote ($495, Tory Burch):

Now, should I be practical and snap up these camel suede flats by Maria Sharapova for Cole Haan ($138, PiperLime)?  Something about them screams “high-fashion” even though they promise to be comfortable and endlessly versatile:

So annoying that I’d still rather the design in a peppy animal print…

Perhaps the appropriate compromise is a camel-hued snakeskin flat, like this to.die.for pair of Lanvins ($950, ShopZoe)?

I dream of wearing them with a pop-of-red dress — like this classic DVF sheath, in festive geranium ($298, DVF):

I’d accessorize with a pair of enorma-studs ($45, Carolee) and then “rough up the edges” with a slightly edgy, dramatic pile of chains ($168, Rachel Leigh):

A slouchy camel coat would be the perfect topper ($675, Barney’s):

Or maybe I should just go with a slightly jazzed up version of a classic camel flat — I’ve long loved this feather-adorned Banana Republic flat ($110, Banana Republic).  Perhaps I should bite the bullet?

On the other hand, these Corso Como snakeskin flats ($99, Corso Como) are absolutely screaming my name.  Adore the zipper accent on the bow — it adds just enough edge to be interesting.

How chic with this “prairie” poncho I’ve been dreaming about (love the knit effect — $198, Madewell) and some skinnies?

I’d pair it with a slouchy caramel-hued bag ($74, Melie Bianco) and some glossy gold earrings (I’ve long wanted these Jean Schlumberger knotted studs — $1,650, Tiffany — love the oversized weightiness of them!):

I’ve also been loving the preppiness of the captoe flat this season, and have seen quite a bit of the style here and there.  I’ve featured these affordable Marais gems a number of times ($64, Marais USA) and think that if there was ever a time where I’d feel like experimenting with the shorts-and-tights look, this is the shoe I’d do it with.

(I go back and forth on this; I’ve seen girls that can work.it and look super-chic all the while, but I’m a little intimidated by the idea and worry that I’ll look back and cringe).  At any rate, I’d probably add on a silky blouse-y top (Acne, $330, Net-A-Porter), high waisted bow shorts (Alice by Temperley, $195, Net-A-Porter), and patterned legwear ($20, Lori’s Shoes):

Darling.  Especially with this classy little handbag by Kate Spade ($425, Zappos):

The truth, though, is that I’m always more drawn to the nearly unmatchable flat in a bright color or bold print.  A few of my impractical favorites?  These glossy tangerine flats by Jil Sander (on sale for $262, TheOutnet), which technically go with approximately nothing in my closet, but I can totally imagine wearing with a nubby gray sweater dress or a simple LBD and huge bib necklace for a power statement:

These “tiger-print,” aqua-accented flats are totally illogical as a purchase for me (I never wear that color blue! — $211, Instilo):

And while I feel that I would scarcely have an appropriate day to wear these be-glittered puppies (literally, when!?), I want ‘em ($285, Kate Spade):

And, to conclude, how beyond perfect are these pink suede flats?  Love the little doo-dad on the toe (Kelsi Dagger, $99, Simply Soles):

And so, you see, this little exercise has been a complete spinning-of-the-wheels.  I set out for something practical and ended up with all kinds of fun little finds in my proverbial shopping cart.  Sigh.  Which of these flats would you pick?

In HER Bag: Magpie Maven Amanda Pearl!

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Leopard, Winter Weather on October 21, 2010 at 10:37 am

A week or two ago, I ran a post on the contents I lug around in my bag on a daily basis.  I received so much positive feedback and so many tips on must-have items to add that I decided I’d feature a similar post, this time focusing on the contents that the fabulous designer behind Amanda Pearl handbags totes around on a daily basis.  (I am in l.o.v.e. with her sophisticated roll clutches, seen below!)

Over the summer, Amanda sported the Louis Vuitton/Sprouse Roses Neverfull (gal after my own heart!), the dimensions of which she finds perfect.  (And it really is.  It fits ev.ery.thing.)  Here’s a little lady that really stops to smell the roses — she claims that the floral design “just makes her happy.”

For fall, she’s most often seen with the Tilly Day Bag (on sale for $498, Amanda Pearl).  “It’s remarkably bottomless,” she explains, permitting little chic-peas like herself to carry their lives around on their shoulders while looking ladylike rather than bag-lady-esque.  The design fits in with the ’50s-era throwback we’ve been seeing this season — l.o.v.e.

As for the contents she must have within an arm’s reach at all time?  To begin with: a Moleskine cahier ($6.95 for set of 3, Moleskine) for notes and design ideas, a classic black Uniball pen ($6 for pack of 4, Amazon), and some mechanical pencils (p.s. I adore mechanical pencils and use them all.the.time…love the super-fine point — $3, JetPens):

She’s also never without her iPhone (from $199, Apple) and earbuds ($29, Apple) –

– as well as her Louis Vuitton monogram vernis zippy wallet (hers is an of-the-moment olive green color!)  and Louis Vuitton leopard print scarf which, as she puts it, is “the best scarf ever — light and gauzy but warm enough when it starts to get chilly.”  Like myself, Amanda is “always cold” and “always in need of a dash of leopard.”

And tissues are a must (one additional way of incorporating the animal print trend in the daily wardrobe! — $1.59/pack, CompanyToo):

In her LeSportSac cosmetic bag ($25, LeSportSac), she carries around bandaids (“you never know!” — and I wouldn’t mind a minor blister or cut if I could wear one these funky little Cynthia Rowley patterned versions?! — $10 for 20, Cynthia Rowley), a Sephora cuticle oil pen ($12, Sephora), and a nail file ($5, Sephora),

Also in her makeup bag?  Chanel’s Double Perfection Powder Compact ($50, Chanel), eyeliner (Stila, $20, Sephora), SoftLips SPF20 Vanilla chapstick ($3.69 for pack of 2, Amazon), and Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square ($24, Nars):

As for enorma-shades?  She swaps between her Tom Ford Anouks (dig the cat eye shape, and it vibes with the retro-chic styling of the handbag!), her pearl-adorned Chanels, and rebellionista Wayfarers ($139, Ray-Ban):

Like myself, she’s never without a little sweet treat (“depends on what I’m addicted to at the moment”).  Some top picks?  Good & Plenty or M&Ms.  Yum.

And she’s always carrying two types of gum — a minty (Trident White Peppermint) and a fruity (Extra Fruit Sensations Sweet Watermelon gum):

Love the mix of all-business and all-pleasure :)   Because Amanda is a talented handbag designer, I took the occasion to ask her a couple of pointed questions about hand-baggery, including her tips for picking out a new handbag — “If it’s going to be a workhorse, I’ve got to be able to sling it over my shoulder and it must be big enough to files/papers/magazines.  If it’s something for going out, it needs to be colorful and attention-getting and needs to fit my iPhone.”  (I’m guessing the glittery Anya Hindmarch clutch below would qualify?  — I.want.it. — $395, EditNY):

Side note: love the idea of a handbag as a “workhorse.”  Crack your own proverbial whip and make your handbag do the work for you with one of these Dooney & Bourke “Dillen” totes — two pockets on the outside, a zip pocket on the inside, a cell phone pocket, a key ring.  It’ll keep ya organized ($295, Dooney & Bourke):

Plus, love the versatility of the styling and fabrication — kind of an upscale L.L. Bean look that meshes perfectly with this season’s utilitarian chic aesthetic.  I could just as easily see myself wearing the Dillen with a pair of classic kitten heeled pumps (Prada, $476, Bluefly)–

– as I could with a pair of wintry-mix-ready duck boots (these fur-lined Tory Burches were last season, but I pretty much d.i.e. over the luxe reimagining of the classic.  I’ve had a comparable pair by Juicy Couture in my shopping basket at Neiman’s for awhile, and I just might have to take the plunge this afternoon…)

As an aside: I’d never been too keen on the style until I swooned over the classic Americana looks in Tommy Hilfiger’s Fall 2010 collection.

I don’t know how practical the heeled versions would be in real-life, street-cred terms.  They’re a bit too costumey for my tastes — but if you like a bold shoe, check out the bootie version Hilfiger’s made available in his e-boutique ($298, Tommy Hilfiger) or

At any rate — I digress.  The other burning question I had for Amanda?  “What is your favorite handbag trend of the moment?”  Her response: “I love that we’ve returned to smaller, ladylike, structured bags!”  I couldn’t agree more.  This feminine “pocket book” exemplifies the aesthetic perfectly — and is available for a mere $36 at Zara!

Can you imagine how incredibly (classically) chic you’d look pairing something like that with a ladylike blouse ($88, Nordstrom) and a tailored skirt (Joseph, $330, Edit New York)?

(Love the contrast of the dreamy chiffon blouse and the heavy-weight wool skirt.)  All you need are some feminine pumps (I know I featured these in patent cherry above, but I die over them in the black-and-white as well! — $476, Bluefly):

Thanks to Amanda for sharing!  I’m now in the mood to buy a million new things…

Pitter Patter(ns)

In Accessories, Jewelry, Leopard, Polka Dot, Shoes, Winter Weather, Work Wear on October 19, 2010 at 10:24 am

When I was little, I loathed and despised tights.  They were constricting and static-inducing, and they were almost always a hair too small (with three little sisters, our laundry was one big nightmare of mismatched socks and mis-assigned undergarments), so that the crotch was too low and I felt like I was waddling around.  For years (and years) I refused to try them on, scarred by these memories and insistent that they would feel itchy.  I went bare-legged even in the winter, much to the chagrin of my ladylike mother.  It was only in my post-college years that I begrudgingly admitted Spanx into my wardrobe, but now — all of the sudden — I am completely over my aversion and in fact all about legwear.  And not just any legwear: patterned legwear.  Polka dot, chevron, herringbone.  I’m ready to give it all a try, granted I follow the cardinal rule of keeping the remaining elements of my outfit sleek, upscale, and mature.  (Otherwise, go ahead and admit yourself to frumpy librarian-ville.)  Consider, for example, the unexpected chic-ness of the polka dotted stocking in this Vogue spread:

Or in these classic-with-a-twist Ann Taylor ads from earlier this fall:

Love the femininity and flair — they add a little texture and interest to any old outfit.  And they just feel French for some reason.  I bought my own dotted pair at J. Crew (pictured below, $22), though they have a back seam and feel just a tad bit racy for officewear.  (The heat factor can be toned down by some all-business pumps and a buttoned-up top, however.)

I’d also recommend Club Monaco’s swiss dots (first pictured below — $29, Shopbop), but if you want something with a bit more…support — TGFS (ThankGodforSpanx), who has released its own patterned line (second pictured below — $43, FigLeaves):

Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, and Gap have some interesting patterned alternatives — chevron, striped, etc — that are worth checking out as well.  As for pairing ideas?  Stick with sleek separates, like a black turtleneck ($53, Petit Bateau — read about my obsession with the turtleneck on my {magpie covets} page…I can’t get enough of the style this autumn) and a tailored above-the-knee skirt (on sale for $59, French Connection):

Layer on some glistening jewels (Sequin, $198, Charm and Chain), add an item-of-the-moment cape (l.o.v.e. this plaid mohair variation — 3.1. Phillip Lim, $1,100, Net-A-Porter) and pair with these awesome flannel-effect pumps ($290, Reiss):

An oversized, be-tasseled black clutch completes the look (See by Chloe, $179, Zappos):

By the way, I think we have Balenciaga to thank for the incredible popularity of the patterned legwear trend this season.  Once the fashion line sent its models down the runway in polka-dotted stockings, the trend went viral.  And merci for that, because it means that retailers as varied as Forever 21 and Saks will have them in stock for us all season long.

{Balenciaga on the runway}

But the real lesson here is that — when wearing patterned tights, regardless of what you wear (a simple sheath, a skirt-and-cashmere set, your favorite sweater dress, etc), I’d go with a palette of sleek black and then add a statement-making topper and some killer heels.  Consider the styling options below –

1)  Ms. All Business: Pair your patterned tights  ($12.50, Hue) with a classic black trench (whether it’s label-lust-worthy, as the Burberry below is — $995, Net-A-Porter; mid-priced — $198, Banana Republic; affordable — London Fog, $99, Macy’s; or budget — $49, Old Navy) and some pulled-together patent pumps (also Burberry, $276, Zappos):

A pair of pearl enorma-studs ($45, Carolee) and a chunky pearl necklace ($250, KEP Designs) are dressed-up without being too stuffy:

The CCSkye “Town and Country” bag adds the right amount of polish ($650, CCSkye) — and don’t forget your requisite Blackberry and WSJ…

2.  Ms. Parisian Chic
– focus on tailoring here, opting for a trim coat (Yves St. Laurent, $1,750, Net-A-Porter) and a structured skirt ($75, ModCloth) –

Pair with a sleek cape coat (Victoria Beckham, $1,260, TheOutnet — for something more within the realm of reality, hit up Zara or check out this $170 TopShop version — dig the militarista flair!) and a lady-like handbag ($275, Brahmin):

Finish with these to.die. suede Moschino booties (saw ‘em in Sassanova and fell in love — $495, Moschino):

Baguette optional.

3.  Ms. Slightly-Left-of-Center — J. Crew styled model Julia Stegner winningly in the October catalog, and though I can’t say this brand of eclecticism is exactly my cup of tea, I was completely transfixed by the overall effect.  The pop of pastel, the mix of fabrics…ay!

To get a similarly “hybrid” look, I’m digging the nonchalance of a fisherman knit sweater ($138, Madewell) with a bold mini-skirt ($88, J. Crew), paired with (seemingly) mis-matched dotted tights.

Go Alexa Chung chic with a cross-body bag (in love with this affordable version from TokyoBay — only $51! — but the real catch would be a classic Celine or YSL…sigh) and some cap-toed flats (adore these affordable Marais USA pairs — $60!):

All you’d need to add is a roomy camel-colored coat, and this bomber is mah-jor (in the phraseology of the indomitable Rachel Zoe — $99, Zara):

Something about the elasticized trim and the roomy hood are just right.on.the.money.  I love those chic little details — so much, in fact, that I almost snapped this jacket up last week while hunting for a Homecomings outfit (I headed “home” to good ol’ UVA last weekend!  Ah!  Love you, Charlottesville!), but then slapped my own wrist remembering that I have had an amazing camel colored wool coat with toggles for the past two years (it looks almost identical to this Fidelity brand version, available for $245, Steven Alan) and that I don’t.need.any.more.coats.  But this is all beside the point –  wouldn’t Ms. Chung approve of the outfit above?!

Love.

4)  Ms. Classic-with-a-Twist — I love the way that patterned legwear can lend a little wit and edge to any ol’ thing, including a staid sheath dress.  Pull your own out of the closet (and if you don’t own one and aren’t looking to spend a fortune, I’ve bought many-a-LBD at Ann Taylor, Banana, and Zara — but the one below is Calvin Klein, heavily discounted at $432, TheOutnet), and layer it beneath a zippy leopard print coat in a classic style (3.1 Phillip Lim, $795, Edit New York):

A mixed-media pearl-and-metal necklace ($298, Henri Bendel) and a pair of ladylike gray flats (Circa Joan & David, $99, Zappos — I also l.o.v.e the gray-and-bronze colored variation!) are the perfect additions:

A word on the flats: LOVE how these flats echo the It shoes of this past season– Louis Vuitton’s ladylike pumps, which came in a range of luxe materials, like ostrich and velvet.

The ’50s, reinvented.  The only thing I’d add is a structured bag ($149, Zara):

So who’s with me?  Anyone else ready to test drive some patterned legwear this season?

ADDENDUM (added in the p.m.): Check out my new {magpie covets} section for little tidbits of fashion inspiration throughout the day, including my latest fashion finds and special deals I’ve managed to dig up.

~~~~~
I’m kind of shocked that I haven’t yet featured a post on leopard this season.  It’s been ev.ery.where.  And I dig it.  This season, I’ve snapped up two leopard blouses, two pairs of leopard shoes, a leopard scarf…outofcontrol.  It’s time to share my fascination with the spotted style and showcase some of my favorite finds for this season’s fiercest look.
{1960s Revlon Ad from VintageVogue — leopard overkill?!  Is such a thing possible?}
One of my favorite purchases in the past few weeks was this pair of textured wedges from Nine West (love the calf-hair texture and the sueded stacked wedge — $88, Zappos):
I took notes from the minimalista trend that I’ve been loving so much this season thanks to Celine, Chloe, and Stella McCartney, and wear it with a fitted black sweater or blazer (the cashmere sweater below is $145, J. Crew), cropped J. Crew Minnies (on sale for $69, J. Crew), and a huge camel-colored pashmina (Love Quotes, $86, Tobi):
Then I load up on the costume jewelry — with an outfit so understated, I feel at liberty to pile it on.  I’ll add enorma-studs (ooh la la, vintage Chanel! — $460, Farfetch) and some sort of tangly, cluster-o-chains (I like the vintage feel of up-and-coming designer Suzanna Dai’s pieces, like the “Antwerp” necklace below, which Blake Lively has been seen wearing — $382, Charm and Chain):
(PS: Secretly, dorkily love the way the shape of the round studs echo the large circular brooches on the necklace.) I’d top it all off with one of my two cherry red coats (one is a lightweight car coat I bought last year that I am in.love with — it has shiny gold flower buttons on it and a peter pan collar; the other is a J. Crew wool coat with a ribbon accent down the front.)  This Milly “Bastille” coat ($645, ShopTwigs) is devastatingly tempting, however — can I justify another red coat?!
Another major Magpie must for the season?  The clutch — so spectacularly versatile in all of its delightful iterations this season, but a leopard print version is just to die.  I adore both of these variations (gray is tres chic right now — $298, Henri Bendel):
I’d pair the latter with a gray sweater dress (I featured this cashmere Bruno Manetti number a few days back, and have been jealously eyeballing it since…$412, MyTheresa) and my favorite mini-wedge boots (don’t think you can improve upon the Loeffler Randall “Matilde” — $695, Loeffler Randall):
Yummy heather gray and rich tobacco leather marry so amicably…as do brown and black (contrary to what most of our mothers’ generation would have to say about it, the combo does work, and with particular panache in conjunction with the leopard look).  Consider, for example, a gauzey leopard print scarf (this looks identical to mine — Chan Luu, $245, Intermix), a simple black knit dress (long-sleeved for winter! — T by Alexander Wang makes some excellent basics — $108, Barney’s), and your low-wedge boots:
You’ll need only a rich, brown-leather tote ($375, J. Crew) and some sparkling baubles to bring the look to life.
I’m envisioning these topaz-esque studs (actually comprised of “navette crystal” — $68, Rachel Leigh) and a knotted necklace ($198, Henri Bendel):
Alternately, swap out the boots for these killer platforms ($89, Zara) and round out the look with a slightly masculine tortoise watch ($205, W Hotels Store):
If you’re gung-ho for gray, this blouse by L’Agence ($195, Net-A-Porter) caught my eye awhile back — it is just perfect for this season, which could be aptly summarized as “The Return of the Blouse.”
Pair with a high-waisted pencil skirt during the week or tone it down with jeans and a shawl-collar sweater on the weekend.  If you’re not a blousey gal, go the sporty route with these killer grayscale leopard vest ($395, Rebecca Taylor):
Think of yourself as a citified ski-bunny (literally — a snow leopard).  Love.  Pair with slightly edgier separates, like rocker-chic gray jeans and some serious chain jewelry to avoid looking cutesy.  This boxy-cut AKA leopard print tee is also right up my alley ($248, Shop Les Nouvelles) paired with skinnies and some worn-in black leather ballets (I love the simplicity of these straight-forward Vera Wangs — $195, Jildor):
Accessorize with glossy gold add-ons, like this CC Skye chain bracelet ($285, CCSkye) and these Carol Marie chain knot earrings ($65, Carol Marie Designs):
And while this ring is slightly edgier than I normally dare, I can’t resist its polish ($50, Noir Jewelry) — and I absolutely drool over completing the look with this slouchy black Anya Hindmarch tote ($950, ScoopNYC):
Side note: I snagged a gorgeous (and affordable!) leopard print blouse from Zara (I’m actually wearing it today, along with my Paige black jeans, mini-wedge black boots, enorma-studs, and enorma-ring…predictable), but had my eye on the variation below for awhile.  I love the lightweight fabric ($88, ShopNastyGal):
For an evening out, I’m loving this silky Tucker tank ($176, Madison LA) paired with some shoulder-grazing earrings (Suzanna Dai, $185, Scoop NYC):
And you’ll of course need some serious footwear.  This Versani pump suits me to a tee: it’s suede, for starters (favorite fabric of the season…), and it’s also non-trampy –I’ll go ahead and admit that I’d prefer to leave the triple platform styles to the pros, whether they be on the runway…or on the street, if you get my drift ($378, Shop the Shoe Box):
But if you’re a bit fiercer than I, I must admit that the artful cutout design of these Castaner near-booties caught my eye ($460, Scoop NYC):
Now, the big to-do this season has been the leopard coat.  You know something’s gone mainstream when you see an iteration of the style in Talbot’s (though…perhaps the omnipresence of the leopard coat owes to its trans-generational appeal: I’ve seen little old ladies wear it just as spiffily as teenagers) — or when a photo from one of your favorite fashion blogs features not one but TWO chic-peas sporting the look:
{Image from the talented Garance Dore}
I’ve gone back and forth on the style — I tend to think the print looks cheap when done on such a large-scale (although…partnered with a Chanel bag as above, I doubt you’ll have those concerns), and would prefer little pops of the spotted print paired with separates in black, brown, camel, or gray.  And occasionally red.  However — if I were to take the plunge, this Wren jacket would be my top pick.  Love the ladylike, boxy cut and the collarless neckline ($595, Wren):
If you’re similarly on the fence, these Jackie O. shots may just push you over the edge and find you guiltily snapping one up next time you’re out and about –
{Images from The Neotraditionalist}
It can be done.  (And if you’re in the market, you’ll have no trouble finding one.  Check out Gryphon’s — $690, Intermix, Topshop’s — $200, TopShop, or Milly’s — $445, Neiman Marcus to see my other top picks.  And to be quite blunt?  Anything under $100 is simply not worth it — it will just look cheap.  Sorry — and I hate to be a hater! — but this coat looks like it’s made of refabricated teddy bears.)  Despite my digression on the subject of coats, I’ll conclude with my favorite way of wearing the leopard style — as little pops of pattern against an otherwise monochromatic look.  I like, for example, a skinny patent leopard belt ($39.50, J. Crew) cinching a simple LBD at the waist or looped loosely with olive pants rolled up a bit at the ankle:
I’m also smitten with these leopard earmuffs (Eugenia Kim, $125, Bluefly), which I would love to pair with a cherry red coat and some furry mittens this winter:
And how chic would you look wearing a minimalista get-up with this statement-making calf-hair tote ($525, Tory Burch)?
It reminds me of the covetable Celine bag I swooned over earlier this season (ugh, hopelessly chic…)
I actually can’t decide whether I like the oversized tote above or the line’s cross-body bag (this style has been huge this season) –
Sigh…the buckle clasp…want.  In the meantime, this baguette ($140, Lori’s Shoes)  may just tide me over until some funds to fuel my handbag addiction become available:
Alternately, if you’re a high roller, I pretty much d.i.e. over this sophisticated, rich brown leather tote with the little pop of leopard print in the interior (who else but Yves St. Laurent?! — $1,727, Matches):
For evenings out, this Rebecca Minkoff minaudiere is on my lust-list ($350, Rebecca Minkoff):
But — for everyday fun — why not swap out your standard wallet for this happy little Kate Spade leopard variation (on sale for $66, Bloomingdale’s)?
But you know what I’m really all about?  The leopard print shoe.  I snagged the Ann Taylor ballet (it’s per.fect. — $158, Ann Taylor):
…but I seriously considered these pointy-toed Daniblacks ($154, Zappos), which I first saw on the shelves of my favorite accessory shop, Sassanova:
I could literally devote an entire post JUST to leopard-print shoes that have caught my eye, but I’ll cut myself short here and finish with these picture.perfect Kate Spade peep toes ($398, Kate Spade):
For just a taste of the print, how about these glittering enorma-studs ($279, Zappos) or this 70s-esque bangle (very Rachel Zoe-esque — $68, Tallulah Tu)?
Alternately, this Jennifer Ouellette headband could be a fun little addition to an otherwise staid get-up (and could easily be mixed with other patterns — $45, Barney’s):
If you’re up for some bolder headgear, I have to admit that this trapper hat made me stop in tracks ($29, Miss Selfridge):
I saw a whole stack of furry hats in this style at Cusp the other day and considered stashing one away for the ski trip I’ll be making this winter, but just couldn’t justify it without the cold December weather to egg me on.  If the full-on hat is too bold for your tastes, consider these ladylike Miu Miu gloves instead ($540, Net-A-Porter):
I’d venture to guess that you’ll find them just as chic now as you will when you’re 50, 60, 70, 80…similarly, ward off years of rainy days with this happy little umbrella ($29, John Lewis):
Are you out-spotted yet?!
Gifting Guru
In Accessories, Beauty Products, Gifts!, Home Decor, Jewelry, Magpie Men, Monograms, Winter Weather on October 13, 2010 at 12:55 pm
I’ve recently encountered a slew of gift-giving occasions — birthday parties, bon voyages, baby showers, thank yous, etc, etc.  And though I’m constantly thinking to myself: “oh, that would make a cute gift!” — I continue to find myself drawing complete blanks and rushing to my go-to gift shop (Sassanova Boutique in Georgetown) at the midnight hour.  This is very un-Magpie like, as I prefer to have things selected, packaged, and tied with a bow well in advance.  So this post is as much a selfish attempt at personal organization as it is an opportunity to share with you so of my favorite gift ideas.  (Perfect as we head towards Christmas territory — it’s just around the corner!  And if my mother taught me nothing else: it’s never too early to buy Christmas gifts.  She has an entire “gift room,” where she stockpile gifts for any number of occasions, often nabbing well-priced items and saving them for gift-giving occasions as they arise.)  Check out some of my top picks below!
For Her
I love these gorgeously-packaged Calypso Celle candles ($45 apiece, Calypso) — perfect for a house-warming, a thank you, or a congratulations — especially when paired with this appealingly printed box of matches (love that the match heads are pink — it’s all in the details! — $12 for two boxes, iomoi):
And who wouldn’t swoon over this funky little rope-and-chiffon statement necklace from the recently-opened eShop Vamoose ($87 apiece, Vamoose)?!
Love the softness of the petals against the ruggedness of the rope chain.  For a smaller token, why not prettily package a little accessories pouch or laptop sleeve (ideal for a new college grad or a “congrats on your new job!” little something — $17, Bungalow):
If the gift feels a little “light” for your recipient, consider throwing in a pretty writing implement ($25, Smythson) or a stack of note pads (first set: Russel & Hazel, $11, Organize; second set: Kate Spade, $12, Organize):
For “the hostess with the mostess,” how about an attractively-designed bottle of champagne (or set of mini champagne bottles) — let’s face it: sometimes I do judge a book by its cover / a bottle by its label!  Pair in a stack of bubbly polka dot coasters (Kate Spade, $20, Organize):
Alternately, this gorgeously-packaged set of wine and bonbons would make any little lady happy as can be (l.o.v.e. the chic labeling — $125, Swanson Vineyards):
I also love gifting little keepsake necklaces to my girlfriends — something delicate and sentimental in a way.  I love Dogeared charm necklaces for this purpose, and they often have sweet little sayings tailored to different situations.  I gave the “Follow Your Dreams” kite charm necklace to my little sis when she graduated from college and set out for New York to pursue her dreams of being a fashion designer by attending Parson’s ($54, Dogeared) and this  “Lean on Me” charm necklace to another one of my sisters to remind her that I am always ready to listen ($54, Dogeared):
I like the idea of pairing them with a sweet little monogrammed jewelry case — Leontine Linens has lovely versions in round hard case shape or flat pouches.  While you’re at it, consider snapping up a coordinating lingerie bag ($60-$295 depending on the fabrication / size — Leontine Linens)!
(Turq Bridal has some affordable versions as well in cute little prints and colors — $22/pop, Turq Bridal.)  Speaking of personalization, these Boulevard Bags wallets are just as chic as can be.  I’m smitten with the Hermes orange version, and I’d have it hot-stamped in gold lettering ($107, Boulevard Bags):
I’ve never met a woman who doesn’t love a cozy pashmina for use as a shawl, scarf, blanket, etc — and I never travel without one (I am always cold…)  Check out the pretty colors (azalea and coral are shown below) at A Bientot boutique, for example  ($42, A Bientot):
They’re the perfect gift for any age, any style, and any occasion.  If I ever stumble upon a good bulk deal, I’m just going to snap up a dozen and keep them set aside for gifting (…even if I’m occasionally the recipient.)  I also think a classic pearl bracelet with a costumey twist is a fun little gift for peers and members of older generations as well — how fun is this little bauble ($58, A Bientot):
And, while perfume can be something of a personal choice, if you either a) know the person well, or b) want to go out on a limb and make your own preferences known, a prettily packaged bottle of perfume makes for a luxurious gift (Chloe, $85, Saks):
Now, sometimes coffee table books get a bad wrap, but — others collect them and display them as treasures, as does Katie Armour of The Neotraditionalist:
{Images from The Neotraditionalist}
I have a few top picks I’d give…and give again…and give again.  For one thing, I had the rare fortune of attending Richard Avedon’s “Portraits of Power” exhibition at the Corcoran a year or two ago, and, while nothing can compare to the impact of seeing some of his portraits in their full glory (they are huge), I would love to thumb through this bound edition ($50, Barnes and Noble):
While we’re on the subject of books, why not give your favorite bibliophile a set of attractively bound books (these stunners were designed by Coralie Bickford Smith) with these gorgeous hand-painted bookmarks ($40 for 3, Bernard Maisner) or a set of handsome ex libris plates ($28 for set of 16, ThornWillowPress):
This is probably a good transition point to the “Pour Lui” (“For Him”) section of this post, as any of the last few items could be offered to the gents as well!
For Him
I know guys (at least — the guys I know) aren’t exactly the type to spontaneously write letters, but these handsome monogrammed notecards by Gadabout ($45 for set of 25 monogrammed cards, Gadabout) may just be masculine enough to spur on the least communicative of the bunch:
(The pocket knife speaks to me: Mr. Magpie chucked the old, rusty can opener I’d brought with me to the new apartment, and we’ve been relying on a Swiss Army knife’s can opener for the past few weeks for no reason other than that I keep forgetting to pick one up until I desperately need to open a can of chickpeas in order to make hummus, which inevitably takes place twenty minutes before guests are due to arrive.  Gr.)  Another good stocking stuffer / gift for a guy that you don’t know too, too well?  A classic plaid scarf.  I don’t think Mr. Magpie realized he was a scarf guy until he received one for Christmas a few years ago — so go ahead, let him surprise himself into realizing that scarves aren’t always effeminate with these affordable Fine & Dandy Shop versions ($35, Fine and Dandy):
(Bonus points for taking it to an embroidery outpost and having it monogrammed in the classic block configuration.)  I believe I’ve mentioned this enough times to sound like something of a broken record, but you’ll never go wrong by gifting a pair of classic Ray Ban Wayfarer shades ($139, Ray-Ban):
Mr. Magpie, preppiest of the preppy, rocks ‘em, as does every hipster, square, and rebel, regardless of age.  Speaking of preppy, if your guy is similarly inclined, a peppy bow tie could be the winning ticket — the ones below are by Fine and Dandy ($35 apiece, Fine and Dandy), but Mr. Magpie had the bow tie-and-cummerbund sets for his groomsmen custom made by the wonderful folks at Peter Blair in Richmond, and was thrilled with the results:
And now on to the merry-making stuff: how cool is this wine tasting kit from Swanson Vineyards?!  For $42, you get 6 mini-bottles and copious notes on each!
Alternately, if your guy is a whiskey/bourbon drinker (Mr. Magpie’s kind of guy), this uber-masculine “outdoor-ready” flask ($22, Design within Reach) is just perfect when paired with a nice bottle o’ booze:
Mr. Magpie is in desperate need of a duffel / overnight bag (he currently has either has a huge roll-a-board or stuffs his belongings in my bags…), so I’ve been on the lookout for masculine-looking travel gear.  I think I’ve narrowed the search down to this rich leather duffel ($395, Jack Spade) or one of the uber-manly Filsons ($295, Filson):
Look forward to additional gift guides in the next few months as we gear up for the holidays!
POP
In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Pop of Red, Shoes, Winter Weather, Work Wear on October 12, 2010 at 1:06 pm
As you probably know by now, I am in l-o-v-e with incorporating pops of BRIGHT red into my daily wardrobe.  I like reds of the fire-engine, candy-apple, cherry-pie variety — bold, bright, and dramatic.  So you can imagine my glee when I discovered that my favorite fashion line, Chloe, featured little pops of red as the principal point of contrast in an otherwise monochromatic lookbook for Spring 2011′s runway show.
Images from Fashionologie
(Be still my heart.)  While I actually think the flats featured above are somewhat off-putting (they look like cropped versions of the diving booties I was forced to wear during an unpleasant jungle incident on my honeymoon — sorry, Lady MacGibbon), seeing one of my favorite fashion fixes come to life on the runway was thrilling!  The contrast of colors is oh-so-delicious and enticing.  Consider, for example, beginning with a taupe-colored knit mini (Juicy Couture, $200, Net-A-Porter) and a corresponding pair of suede Stuart Weitzmans ($298, Endless):
Break the look up a bit with a leopard scarf ($28, YesStyle) and a pop of red in the form of this luxe-looking (but affordable!) tote ($93, Deux Lux):
Or maybe you’re more into gray-scale neutrals?  I love the way that this flame red jacket ($69, Old Navy — and look how Milly-esque and chic it is at that price!) pops against this yummy gray sweater dress (Bruno Manetti, $430, MyTheresa):
Finish the look with a pair of textured python flats (Michael Kors, $98, Zappos) and this un.be.liev.a.ble retro-styled Anya Hindmarch tote (ugh, want.it.so.badly — $795, Scoop NYC):
If you’re wondering whether this little pop-o-red look really works — how adorable does this little chic pea look?
Image from Everything Fabulous
Adore the oversized gold watch, the tailored blazer, and of course that tomato-red leather clutch!  For a similarly casual-yet-pulled-together weekend look, I’m sort of obsessed with this boxy-fit Rebecca Taylor pullover in a right-on-point gray animal print ($260, Scoop NYC) with some skinnies, an oversized gray tote (I love the shape of this Louboutin tote, but realize that the price tag is a bit on the extravagant side…$1,649, MyTheresa), and some unexpected red suede flats (French Sole, $98, Jildor):
Alternately, how chic would you look layering this printed red scarf ($195, Virginia Johnson) with a dove-hued suede jacket (Alberta Ferretti, $310, TheOutnet) and skinnies?
Then simply add some textured pewter flats (these are also by Michael Kors — love either this pair or the bolder patterned python variation above — $185, Scoop NYC) and a cheery flame red tote (I’ve been coveting this all season — $475, Kate Spade):
For the edgier out there, I love the idea of these suede booties instead ($89.90, Zara) — I saw Olivia Palermo rocking a pair and pretty much swooned over them, although they are a bit intimidating at first glance (you can do it!):
For a slightly dressier occasion, this swirl-print silk dress (Iro, $350, Scoop NYC) would look to die with a pair of suede gray pumps (yep, they’re the same Stuart Weitzmans featured above — just in a different hue, and I want ‘em both! — $328, Scoop NYC):
Perfect beneath this gorgeous red wool coat ($450, Steven Alan), and finished with a little fur stole ($50, TopShop) and this textured, stone-colored wallet clutch (don’t you love the chain detailing? — $49, Deux Lux):
I’m also loving the deeper slate grays this season — consider pairing this gorgeous Rebecca Taylor dress ($350, Rebecca Taylor) with a statement-making necklace (love the little hints of red — Sachin & Babi, $215, Edit) and some suede red platforms (I can’t.stop.featuring.these –Pour La Victoire, $262, ShoptheShoebox):
Layer the entire look beneath this on-trend cape jacket (Vanessa Bruno, $1,125, Net-A-Porter) and, for extra glamor, these ladylike red gloves ($202, Matches):
The cape above would also look gorgeous with some skinny jeans and, as we approach slushy winter weather, some cherry red wellies (Hunter, $125, WinkNYC) and fun knit mittens ($65, Kate Spade):
Not a wellies gal?  No worries — these patent leather Johnson & Murphy mocs ($138, Johnston & Murphy) will have you covered (literally…):
Another cooler clime investment I’m willing to make?  This wool duffel in festive red ($160, TopShop) — perfect, in my opinion, with a chunky sweater ($350, Barney’s) and some skinnies –
Finished off with some cozy Minnetonka mocs ($45, ShoptheShoeBox) and an oversized, ulititarian-chic tote (l.o.v.e. this line of bags — $440, FleaBags):
Or maybe you want to let the designers do the work for you — just imagine how chic you’d look tucking a taupey-rose crew-neck ($98, J. Crew) into this dip-dyed skirt (Valentino, $207, TheOutnet):
Pair with any of the greigy-taupe heels featured above and this picture-perfect, updated doctor’s bag ($495, Rebecca Minkoff) in lovely flame red:
Another option?  This military-inspired cargo dress (See by Chloe, $142, TheOutnet), paired with glossy red mid-heel pumps ($89, Zara):
Perfect for work alongside a pop-of-red scarf (love the leightweight, gauzey feel of this cherry red version — $29, Gap) and a coordinating taupey-mushroom colored tote (oh Prada…how I love your bags — $1,395, Barney’s):
Keep spare change or makeup compartmentalized in this peppy little tomato-colored kidskin pouch ($55, Lauren Merkin):
As the capstone for this post, consider the scene-stealing dress of Lanvin’s Spring 2011 collection — this dreamy red concoction floated right on down the runway amidst a sea of grays and neutrals:
I don’t want to get all mushy on you, but last Thursday was my two month (!) wedding anniversary, and when I stumbled upon  this lovely Amy Free photo the day after, I just thought –
Image from Amy Free Photography
“Well, isn’t that perfect.”  Something about the old-timeyness of the photo, the vintage typewriter, the simplicity of the typed letters — I don’t know why, but the image just pulled at the old heartstrings, especially within the context of my two-month anniversary!  And despite last week’s over-the-top enthusiasm for androgynous flannel, tweed, and heavy knits, I found myself wanting something a bit more romantic — a bit softer – in terms of wardrobe picks thereafter.  And isn’t that, after all, the great thing about fashion?  Reinvention?
I am thinking along the lines of a blush pink, elegantly-pleated blouse (Elizabeth and James, $132, TheOutnet), tucked into a startling black silk, rose-effect skirt (Tibi, $270, Net-A-Porter):
Now, I know it’s odd to chase after a romantic look by reaching for black right off the bat, but there’s something so glamorously feminine about the contrast.  I’d finish the look with these jet black enorma-studs (unexpected and chic — $38, Kate Spade) and these dazzling “Graham” mesh-and-suede pumps ($395, Kate Spade):
Alice and Olivia get my drift — check out this divine petal pink-and-black combo dress ($370, Net-A-Porter), and let’s swoon over the draping while we’re at it:
Pair with these affordable MaxStudio pumps — love the unexpected design (on sale for $77, Amazon) and a floral clutch ($98, Sondra Roberts):
Finish the look with these eye-catching danglers by up-and-coming jeweler Suzanna Dai ($150, Max & Chloe):
Create the look yourself by pairing a femme silk-chiffon dress in classic black (ugh, I die over this Proenza Schouler number — $795, Net-A-Porter) with some blush-colored pumps (Giuseppe Zanotti, $437, Endless):
Perfect with these pale amethyst art deco clips ($165, Ylang23):
Alternately, how to die is this gorgeous blush lace dress by Joseph ($795, Edit)?
Perfect with some platform black suede pumps ($250, FootNotesOnline):
(I a.dore suede everything these days.)  I’d probably coordinate the look with this oversized Lauren Merkin clutch in honeycomb-print black suede ($200, Lauren Merkin):
If you’re a purist, keep the look fully feminine with this blush-toned dress ($187, Madewell) and a some ladylike pearl-accented add-ons (I’m smitten with Juliet & Company’s affordable line of “opera-house” ready costume jewelry, including this multi-strand bracelet — $38, Juliet & Company — and this tiered pearl “piano” necklace — $65, Juliet and Company):
This ruffle-front coat (Rebecca Taylor, $595, Edit) would be the perfect topper, especially paired with these fun little pearl-studded clutch (love the retro minaudiere shape — $187, Sondra Roberts):
Or maybe this eye-catching lavender silk dress (love the drama of the plunging neckline against the soft, ruffly glory of the hem — $187, TheOutnet):
Go Jazz Age with your accessories  — I love these dec0-esque dangling Kenneth Jay Lane earrings ($150, Max and Chloe) and these flapper-style Casadei shoes (on serious sale for only $150, FootCandyShoes):
For everyday wear, I love this blush-toned drapey cardigan (Splendid, $63, Net-A-Porter) with this festive little top ($34, Madewell) and jeans:
I’d add coordinating flats (Delman, on sale for $110, Zappos) and rose gold accents.  It’s been a recent revelation  that I absolutely l.o.v.e. and live for rose gold pieces — I still love the look of polished gold, but a feminine rose gold watch (Freelook, $249, Endless) and a pair of coordinating rose gold knots ($195, Alexis Bittar) are just it:
Are you swooning over the roman numerals on the watch face?!  Oh, it’s all in the details…
The Big Chill
In Accessories, Shoes, Winter Weather on October 7, 2010 at 1:24 pm
Over the weekend, Mr. Mapgie and I somewhat haphazardly opted to watch “The Big Chill” via our Netflix instant queue.  The movie was something of a slow-moving ship, though it featured a remarkable cast (Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, Kevin Kline, William Hurt, Tom Berenger) and an even more remarkable soundtrack (love that soul music), and served as an interesting study of grief in its various forms and effects.
I was surprised, however, to see how much of the 1983 wardrobe featured in the film has made its way into our current season’s top looks: flannel shirts, fair isle sweaters, pops of corduroy, and suede boots were as trendy then as they are now.  The styling couldn’t have been more appropriate as the cold winter weather rolls into the District and I gear up for a camping trip this weekend in rural Virginia (more on that to come).  Without further adieu, then, I’d like to present some BIG CHILL looks:
It all begins with a heavy flannel shirt, and this rolled-sleeve tunic ($49, J. Crew) has already made its way into my closet!  It’s soft as can be and just about the coziest thing you want to be wearing as the mercury drops.  Pair with skinny jeans, a cozy vest (love this forest green shade for this season — on [modest] sale for $98, J. Crew), and some lived-in leather boots (Rachel Comey, $425, ShopBird), and you’re set:
I have my sights set on this classic — and surprisingly affordable, though rich-looking! — J.W. Hulme tote ($135, StevenAlan):
If the weather calls for something warmer than a vest, I am making a bee-line for this GapKids sherpa-lined jacket on my lunch break ($56, Gap):
Love the ruggedness of it in that washed, rich-acorn-hued fabric.  The epitome of utilitarian-chic, and instantly adaptable to any number of get-ups.  Perfect paired with this cozy hat ($135, Steven Alan) and a pair of fleece-lined mittens (Hat Attack, $44, Cusp — I tried these on in the store earlier this week and pretty much fell in love with them):
Because we’re really entering “sweater weather” territory, why not snuggle up in a kitschy fair isle sweater (first: Dolce and Gabbana, $440, Net-A-Porter; second: Rag&Bone, $355, Shopbop)?
D&G was all.over.this.joint on the Fall2010 runway.
Sure, it might be a tad costumey on the D&G runway, but when worn in proportion — blended with other wintry separates — it strikes just the right balance of “I have fun with my fashion” and “I’m updating a retro style.”  I think the easiest way to avoid looking…well, dowdy or just plain silly is by wearing the fair isle knit in a trendy cape / blanket sweater form.  This drape-front Warehouse cardigan-jacket is right on the money ($101, ASOS), and I could totally see myself wearing it with some leggings, black mini-wedge boots ($139, PiperLime), and an upscale-looking tote (Marc Jacobs, $458, PiperLime):
12th Street by Cynthia Vincent has some awesome options out there this season in the way of fair-isle blanket sweaters — I’d love to curl up in this yummy ivory print one ($398, PiperLime) or even this navajo-inspired variation ($495, Goldyn):
Get the look for less with this Kensie brand variation ($78, NordstromUniqlo has some affordable alternatives, but they don’t have the same hefty, thick knit that I’m so craving nowadays):
Perfect paired with the cognac-hued Steve Madden Intyce boot ($129, Jildor), even though everyone and her mother owns a pair:
But my lust-list favorite is this See By Chloe intarsia version ($795, Net-A-Porter):
It’d look awesome mixed in with some skinny jeans and boots (I was originally thinking of gray flat boots — the SM Intyce also comes in an appealing and less commonly worn smokey gray hue — but then I saw the bargain you could get with these Stella McCartney puppies and swooned — $398, TheOutnet):
And — to add to the chic factor — pair with some faux fur earmuffs (die over these — $145, Net-A-Porter) and this yummy Marc Jacobs tote ($727, MyTheresa):
Love that the look is entirely in the gray/taupe family.  It tones down the loudness/kitschiness of the sweater.  If you’re not so sure about the statement sweater, try it out in a small cold-weather accessory, like this cozy scarf (D&G, $275, Net-A-Porter):
It’d look nothing short of darling paired with this nubby fisherman’s sweater ($195, Urban Outfitters), but keep things from getting too school marmish by pairing with skinny jeans tucked into fierce over-the-knee boots ($825, Loeffler Randall) and a slouchy black leather tote ($128, Nordstrom):
Finish the look off by adding this gorgeous tailored blazer ($375, Steven Alan):
Love the two front pockets!  Get the look for less with this GapKids pom pom fair isle scarf and mitten set ($16.50 for scarf, $14.50 for mittens — GapKids):
(You may have noticed by now, but I’m not ashamed to dip into the Kids section for outerwear now and then — I snagged an awesome Stella McCartney for GapKids bomber jacket last season and I wear it proudly.)
As suggested above, I am so craving thick-knit sweaters this season — they’re the perfect antidote to the impending “BIG CHILL.”  I’m loving this “winter bomber” in yummy oatmeal (those darling leather buttons! — $270, AllSaints):
This gray Zara delight ($59, Zara) has my name all over it as well:
Love the idea of unexpectedly pairing the slouchy, oversized, boxy fit with a tailored skirt, like this felted wool number by J. Crew ($88, J. Crew):
Flat boots or some daring booties and a luxe-looking bag (l.o.v.e. the Brompton — $298, J. Crew) lend the look polish.
I’m also seriously loving the idea of pairing this micro-fair-isle-print sweater I snagged at Zara two weeks ago ($59, Zara — do you not live for the elbow patches?!  I saw this trend at Ralph Lauren when Mr. Magpie and I stocked up on his fall wardrobe, and was in.love) with an unexpected checked blazer ($325, J. Crew)
Love the contrast of textures and patterns, but the prints look so good against one another!  I’d flip up the collar of the blazer and wear it like outwear, pairing with either one of the felt wool skirts above or some jeans.  If you opt for the latter, make sure that your footwear doesn’t leave you looking too covered up — no boots, just brown mocs so that a peek of skin shows through!  Alternately, this similar fair-isle print dress could be an excellent addition to the fall wardrobe ($128, Tommy Hilfiger), especially when cinched at the waist (as seen below) with a skinny brown leather belt ($34, American Apparel) and paired with this delightfully affordable pair of cap-toe flats ($64, Marais USA) an
Eeee!  The suede cap toe!  Round out the look by slipping into a cozy camel jacket (this slouchy Lover-brand jacket is to die, $610, Net-A-Porter) and adding some chic leather gloves ($98, J. Crew):
This suede fold-top Prada tote ($1,995, Barney’s) is the end-all, be-all — it’d look just killer (and oh-so-chic) with this getup!
Ah!  I could go on and on forever in this vein of thought, but I’ll stop here and save some of the finds I’ve not yet featured for another post.  Loving the BIG CHILL!
In the Pink
Mr. Magpie was in dire need of some fall wardrobe additions, so we spent quite a bit of time (and money…) at Ralph Lauren this past weekend, and I was reminded of the company’s admirable charitable commitment to the breast cancer cause when the salesclerk mentioned that the line has raised over $50M in support of breast cancer research.  $50 million!  And then I was reminded that this month is Breast Cancer Awareness month and decided to add little pops up pink to my daily wardrobe as my little gesture of support.
Whether it’s from Ralph Lauren’s Pink Pony Shop or not (below: Pink Pony tee, $98, Ralph Lauren and Pink Pony water bottle, $20, Bloomingdale’s), there are tons of ways to show your true colors when it comes to supporting breast cancer research.
I’ve long wanted, for example, a Virginia Johnson scarf.  She has the cutest/quirkiest prints in the best colors — include our color of choice: pink ($195, Virginia Johnson):
Tres chic paired with some understated taupe separates — as are these p.e.r.f.e.c.t. pink pumps (and in suede! — which I can’t get enough off this season! — Kate Spade, $295, Zappos):
I’m also loving the vibrant fuschia of this Marc Jacobs hobo ($398, Nordstrom), which would positively pop next to some rich chocolate browns or some classic black separates:
I recently set my sights on this Boulevard wallet, which can be hot-stamped with your monogram (swoon! — I’d do my initials in gold when paired with this chic French-style wallet — $107 plus $5 for personalization, BlvdBags):
Alternately, imagine snazzing up your workaday wardrobe with some pink baubles — I a.dore these Kendra Scott studs ($55, Kendra Scott), and, for a limited time, when you sign up for the KS newsletter, you get $20 off your first order, so these little treasures are a mere $35!
It’d look killer with this oversized (and admittedly pricey) Baccarat cocktail ring ($1,400, Neiman Marcus):
Alternately, I’m very into the heavy-looking, slightly art-deco-esque bangle this season, and this KJL oval-stone cabochon stunner is no exception ($60, TheOutnet):
Alternately, how darling are these leather bracelets by Erica Anenberg ($98 and $84, respectively, Erica Anenberg)?  While I admit to giving preferential treatment to the bold and oversized when it comes to jewelry, I kind of like the idea of pairing these with a stack of gold bangles!
For something a bit glitzier (less appropriate for day-time), I’m in l-o-v-e with these sparkling Frangos danglers ($160, Charm and Chain):
Love the gradiated pink stones.  Die.  Need something to save for a (literal) rainy day?  How about this pink-accented umbrella ($68, Henri Bendel) with a pair of classic Hunter wellies in (non-classic) hot pink ($125, Jildor)?
Or you could make a private pink statement with the flirty, peppy undergarments by Eberjey ($38 for bralette, $20 for bottoms — Journelle):
(Nothing makes me feel more pulled together than coordinating undergarments!)  Alternately, add a little pop of pink to your beauty routine with Bobbi Brown’s cheek tint ($22, Bobbi Brown) or lip gloss ($20, BobbiBrown):
Or shake things up with a rose-colored nail lacquer, like one of these Essies:
Of course, a donation to the Susan G. Komen foundation is always appreciated — as are any of the hundreds (thousands?) of products you’ll find all over the place this month that pledge to donate a certain percentage of sales to breast cancer research, like this lovely-smelling Archipelago candle ($29, Nordstrom):
Smell good and do good, too?!  Now we’re really seeing the world through rose colored glasses…
That’s my bag, baby!
I love when fashion magazines ask celebrities to share the contents of their bags.  I find it so interesting, so intimate — such an indication of personality and style.  So today I decided I would launch a series of “bag lady” mini-posts, asking different fashion magpies what they tote around on a day-to-basis.  I’ll start.
Most days, I toss my belongings into my Louis Vuitton NeverFull.  When I’m feeling extra put-together, I’ll swap in a bag that coordinates with my get-up (I often lean on my quilted, chain-handled Kate Spade Mary Anne tote — l.o.v.e) — but I pretty much always fall back on the NeverFull.  Inside?  My two hot pink mini Moleskine notebooks ($8.95 for set, Moleskine) for recording fashion finds and all-things-food-related (Mr. Magpie and I are big cooks, and I like to keep track of the recipes we try / the wine we drink / our thoughts on restaurants…nerdy) and some extra-fine-point felt-tip pens (I l.o.v.e. the super fine tip — basically the width of a needle point — of the Le Pen model; perfect for my minuscule handwriting! — $1.99 apiece, CalligraphyEtc
I of course carry my wallet everywhere — it’s the Tory Burch fluorescent pink logo wallet.  I get so many compliments (and also insults) from it — people love it or hate it.  (“Man, that’s bright!” or “Ooh, I love that!”)
Barbie doll pink is always just fine by me, though I’ll have to find a more season-appropriate model soon.  I saw this leopard print one ($195, also from Tory Burch) and wanted it badly…how cute would it look tossed inside my big black Kate Spade tote?!
I’m now realizing that the majority of the belongings I tote around on a day-to-day basis are, in fact, pink — love it — as I also always carry my pink iPod shuffle ($49, Apple; amazing for my daily runs — I just load up whatever’s poppy and on the radio and don’t have to worry about searching for songs, etc; plus, it’s so tiny and comes with a built in clip that I can affix to the band of my running shorts!  Genius!) and my hot pink earphones (I go through earphones on a bi-annual basis — for some reason, I’m always losing them, which is highly uncharacteristic of me.  At any rate, I snap up sets of these inexpensive, brightly-colored JVC “Gumy” earbuds — $10/pop, BestBuy):
I’m an Apple gal — I also have my trusty iPhone (from $99, Apple) on me at all times:
I know people have been “down” on the iPhone lately, but I still marvel at it’s chic design and infinite utility.  Plus, my Crossword app can occupy me for hours.  Other things I always have on me?  Candy of some kind (I’m like a child — I just cannot get enough gummy candy, and I live for Haribo) –
–and shades.  I’m almost always carrying my two favorites: Chanels and RayBans:
The two styles befit two different circumstances/wardrobe choices.  Because I’m perpetually cold (aka preternaturally freezing at all times; I lose circulation easily, as I did yesterday, in balmy, 70-degree rain, when I looked down and noticed my fingers had gone white), I usually have a cardigan (the J. Crew “Jackie” is my favorite, and I own it in about 34 shades — $62, J. Crew) and a scarf (this one’s cashmere for extra warmth — White and Warren, $240, Ron Herman):
I’ve also been known to carry hand warmers around in inclement (and even not so inclement…) weather ($10 for 12 pairs, Target):
Now, I’m sort of embarrassed to own up to this next item on the list because a) I think it borders dangerously on the “I-wear-sneakers-with-my-suit-so-that-I’m-comfortable-on-my-way-to-work” line of thinking, which — well, I find extremely unattractive, and b) it illustrates a tragic fashion-related shortcoming of my own.  But.  Here goes: I always have a pair of flats in my bag because I’ll admit that I am not a talented walker in high heels, and I’ll often switch into my heels for office hours and then giddily transfer my feet into some broken-in flats come 6 pm.  Gah!  Caught red-handed (or un-heeled, rather)!  I’d happily stash these Lanvins ($525, Zoe):
My bags are always littered by stray bobby pins ($3.49 for 50, Target), hair elastics ($4.99, Sally Beauty), and headbands:
You never know when a quick hair fix will turn your day around.  Sometimes, nothing makes me happier than pulling a bad hair day back into a high bun.  Done and done.  Another “quick fix” nearly always found in my tote?  Costume jewelry.  Whether a sparkling pair of enorma-studs (on sale for $75, BingBangNYC), a chunky statement necklace ($198, Henri Bendel), or a glitzy oversized cocktail ring (on sale for $105, Noir Jewelry), they can make any ol’ day better:
I’m also never, ever without a tube of mascara (I like DiorShow — $24, Sephora — and Benefit’s BadGal Lash — $19, Sephora):
My other cosmetics-related must-haves: Fresh’s Sugar Rose lip treatment ($22, Sephora) and Elizabeth Arden’s 8 Hour Cream (magic balm that my mother has used for.ev.er — it soothes chapped lips, minor burns and abrasions, dry skin, etc, etc, etc — $17, Elizabeth Arden):
I’d been stashing Tarte’s lip/cheek stains ($30, Sephora – and they have great shades; I own “Tipsy” and “Flush”) in my tote for awhile, but recently (as in…two days ago), I receive a sample of Benefit’s PosieTint ($28, Sephora) and I’m a convert — I l.o.v.e. it!
Whew, I know it looks like I carry around a suitcase on a daily basis, but everything manages to fit comfortably in my Neverfull.  The only other things I consistently have with me?  Scattered notes (grocery lists, to-dos, etc) and coupons and a book — right now I’m reading Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go ($17, Amazon):
What must-haves do you carry around in your tote?
