That’s So Clutch

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Work Wear on September 30, 2010 at 11:24 am

Have I mentioned my obsession with the clutch?  It’s so darn impractical, it’s just got to be the fashionista’s best bud — and while it was once reserved for evening wear alone, the clutch’s many iterations and fabrications this season make it an appropriate choice morning, noon, and night.  Let’s take a clutch tour, eh?

CLUTCH LOOK #1: WILD THING

It’s pretty much apparent to anyone with two eyes and an inkling of an awareness of fashion that leopard has been big this season.  The long, sleek Kate Spade clutch above ($395, Kate Spade) would be a perfect add-on to any chic-pea’s wardrobe this fall.  Add a draped cocoon coat ($550, Loeffler Randall) and an edgy tortoise-print patent pump ($89, Zara) and you’re ready to prowl the streets:

These vintage button earrings ($140, Charm and Chain) pair excellently with this fun heavy-chain Elva Fields masterpiece ($118, Elva Fields) and this chunky ombre hinge bangle ($395, Alexis Bittar) to round out the urban jungle look:

And either this funky little pom-pom headband ($58, Henri Bendel) or these safari-ready shades ($30, TopShop) are sure to bring out the animal in you:

Meow.

CLUTCH LOOK #2: UPTOWN GAL

I find the above quilted clutch so darn cute, I can barely stand it.  Part Chanel, part whimsy — it’s the perfect accent for the tailored gal on the go.  All you’ll need is some classic Chanel rouge a levres ($15, Amazon) and some all-business heels (well — not all business, but I love the menswear influence evident in them — Miu Miu, $595, Net-A-Porter):

I’d add a pair of vintage enorma-studs (these are the real.deal — Chanel, $460, Farfetch) and a long, layered-chain necklace to the mix (Citrine by the Stones, $158, Pret-A-Beaute):

To avoid looking too stuffy, slip on a youthfully glitzy, oversized cocktail ring ($185, CCSkye) and a pair of face-shielding enorma-shades (Dior, $295, Nordstrom), and add a large tote to your spare wrist ($695, CCSkye):

Then ask your driver to bring the car around front.

CLUTCH LOOK #3: GLOBAL GLAMAZON

When I saw the dazzling ikat clutch above ($245, Felix Rey), I died a little bit.  That happy sunshiney yellow!  The dramatic contrast of shades!  The trim cut!  Oh, how impractical and delightful.  Perfect for mixing in with some other “global-leaning” statement pieces — I instantly thought of pairing it with this silky, completement francaise Catherine Malandrino number (adore navy — love, love, LOVE it for evening — $485, Net-A-Porter) and these sky-high, be-jeweled Alexander McQueen pumps ($1,275, Bergdorf Goodman):

Add some glittering, colorful earrings: these danglers if you’re into making a big splash (Dori Csengeri, $495, Charm and Chain) or these funky little studs that tie the yellow back in ($65, Kendra Scott):

The clutch above could be equally as lovely paired with a far more dressed-down get-up — for these last, warm days of the summer-fall transition, just think of how cute it’d be worn with a bold yellow top ($283, Pret-A-Beaute), some skinnies, and these yellow-stone flip flops (Mystique, $113, Pret-A-Beaute):

All you’d need to add is a bold necklace (Lizzie Fortunato is “where it’s at” in terms of statement jewelry with a “global” look — on sale for $515, Farfetch) and one of those yummy Virginia Johnson scarves ($195, Virginia Johnson):

Back at home, lounge on some of these amazing Madeline Weinrib throw pillows (check out the gorgeous textiles she has on her site!):

So globally-sourced — so 21st century.

CLUTCH LOOK #4: BOOK WORM BABE

So I saw the beyond precious “Gatsby” clutch ($325, Kate Spade) above, and could not take my eyes off of it.  (Though his prose is often dismissed by the critics as being — well, a bit thin — Fitzgerald remains one of my favorite authors, and we all know that I adore a boxy clutch.  Kate Spade, keep ‘em coming.)  Perfect with some tweedy-chic looks for your next book club meeting, including some tortoise shell readers ($38, ShopTerrain), a pair of donegal pants ($168, J. Crew), and these over-the-top flannel pumps (who else but Louboutin?! — $775, Net-A-Porter):

Looking for add-ons?  I’m thinking a pair of polished gold knot earrings ($195, Alexis Bittar) and this luxe-looking croc-strap watch (Yves Bartelin, $202, Pret-A-Beaute):

…and because we all know that we would never last in those serious pumps, pack a pair of tasseled loafers ($79, Zara) and a nubby cardigan-jacket ($395, Calypso) and get reading:

CLUTCH LOOK #5: THE TOUGH COOKIE

For those of you who channel Kate Moss on a regular basis (I envy you), this Alexander Wang clutch ($525, ShopZoe) is a great starting point for any day-t0-night look.  Add a chic blazer with the sleeves rolled up ($125, TopShop), some super-skinny-leg jeans (if you dare, go with rocker-chic gray, but dark washes are a better bet — J Brand, $160, Net-A-Porter), and these killer suede boots (a.dore the little snap-back detailing — Ash, $195, FootNotesOnline):

For accent pieces, studs have been b.i.g. for the past few seasons, and they’d blend perfectly with this aesthetic.  Snap up a wristful of studded, stoned bangles ($128 for first 3 and $148 for last 3, all from Henri Bendel):

Then add an enorma-ring in polished gold ($150, CCSkye) and some cherry red nail lacquer (to keep the look from being too, too edgy — I like this “Really Red” shade by Essie):

An ikat-print scarf in grays, blacks, and whites ($45, TheOutnet) and some rocker shades (classic wayfarers — $139, Ray-Ban) complete the look:

Very Rihanna-meets-Kate-Moss.

CLUTCH LOOK #6: (LUCK BE A) LADY

Um, I’ve pretty much died over Amanda Pearl’s unbelievable roll clutches (like the Sereno above — $1,398, Amanda Pearl) for.ev.er., and am beyond delighted to announce that the talented, generous designer has offered you lucky Magpie readers a special 30% off coupon code — just enter “MAGPIE” at checkout!  (Make sure you take some time poring over her lovely jewelry collection as well — the clutches are investments, but the jewelry is affordable and darling!)  Pair the glam, slightly retro clutch above with these drusy studs by Pade Vavra (l.o.v.e. — $200, Charm and Chain) and some glitzy pumps (these remind me of the Louboutins I died over last season — did I mention that I bought them for my bachelorette party, and then discovered that I literally could not walk a foot in them?  They were too big, even in their smallest size, and my ankle was at a totally unnatural angle…tragedy!  At any rate, I’m willing to give these H by Halston pumps a try — bonus points for affordability! — $79, Baker’s Shoes):

They just scream Vegas glam.  L.o.v.e.  I like the idea of mixing in this slightly vintage-looking cuff (favored by Rihanna! — $345, Pade Vavra) to mix things up and give the look a little depth:

Now, don’t forget the faux cils — and why not shake things up by brushing a coat of glittery lacquer (“Gold Nuggets,” $8, EssieShoppe) atop your routine red mani?

I’d say you’re ready for a coup de champagne ($75 for set of 2 glasses, Kate Spade):

How clutch are these looks?!

His & Hers

In Accessories, Home Decor on September 29, 2010 at 3:18 pm

Thanks to yesterday’s post (which broached the subject of my bookworm tendencies) and a lunch break in the heart of Georgetown undergrad territory (Booeymonger’s at Prospect and 33rd), I must confess to a nerdy jealousy of the college student.  It’s not that I miss the college experience, per se (I’m blissful about  my current station in life — I love being married and not having to live on a shoestring any longer) — I miss the academic aspect of it.  The rigor of coursework, the stimulation of class discussion, the hours of studying and writing.  (Did I mention I went on to get an M.A. in literature?  Yes, you’re looking at a mega-geek over here.)  To stave off these intense feelings of nostalgia, I spent the majority of my afternoon daydreaming about a perfectly decorated library situated in my dream home, but found myself interestingly torn between the aesthetics of what I’ll loosely term “his” and “hers.”  (I must be a good wife if I’m already attuned to Mr. Magpie’s incipient requests for “something more masculine” — I can just hear them now…)  For the male variety, I took inspiration from the woodsy, Ralph Lauren style of decorating:

Image from Eclectic Revisited

Image from Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers

Image from Habitually Chic

I’d begin with a classic plaid-upholstered armchair ($4,125, Ralph Lauren):

A worn-in, vintage leather couch would be right up Mr. Magpie’s alley — and this 1930s era sofa from Belgium is right on the money (1stDibs):

Soften the look with a couple of artfully-placed throws, like this cozy plaid (I kind of like the idea of mismatched plaid in a man’s study — $158, ShopTerrain) or this “Antler” variation (perhaps due to some primordial masculine urge, Mr. Magpie loves all things that make him feel like he’s a hunter — $98, ShopTerrain):

Leather bins of varying sizes, arranged in a corner or by the fireplace would add some warmth and textural contrast (on sale for $44-$49, Sundance Catalog):

A well-worn travel trunk would make for an interesting alternative to a coffee table ($3,395, Jayson Home & Garden):

(Note its apt titling as a “Faulkner table” — a perfectly allusive name for a library centerpiece.)  As for desktop accents, how about this vintage-looking, brassy “photographer” lamp ($295, Jayson Home and Garden)?

For some reason I feel that this obscenely-priced leather terrier figure would be right at home in a library of this design, adding a touch of whimsy to the otherwise staid setting ($695, Jonathan Adler):

In that same vein of thought, some carefully-positioned antlers (on the mantel? across the edge of the desk?) might round things out nicely ($150 apiece, Jayson Home and Garden):

I like the idea of introducing a little sunshine to the overwhelmingly dark palette by storing Mr. Magpie’s ever-expanding collection of Wall Street Journals in a sturdy tote like this Jack Spade version ($195, Jack Spade):

Perhaps a splash of orange elsewhere, in the form of these structured, canvas boxes, placed alongside rows of books on the walls of book cases, would be in order as well ($495, Plantation Design):

Mr. Magpie would certainly insist on a bar for a library of this magnitude, and I’m liking the idea of accenting some classic cut glassware ($93 for 4 double old-fashioned glasses, Williams-Sonoma; $120 for similar-style decanter, Ralph Lauren) with some hickory coasters ($20, ShopTerrain):

I’d set them out atop this wood-paneled tray ($225, Williams-Sonoma) along with Mr. Magpie’s favorite spirits — bourbon, bourbon, and more bourbon.  He splurges on Blanton’s every now and then but Woodford Reserve is a good standby:

I’d probably add this outdoorsman’s bottle opener to the bar area (well — perhaps not truly outdoorsman-esque…that sort of gent would be more likely to use a Swiss Army Knife — $18, ShopTerrain):

And speaking of pups, we’d need to position a classic Orvis dog bed by the hearth ($50-$90, Orvis):

And now: the “Hers” part of this post we’ve all been waiting for.  I like the idea of a predominantly neutral-colored office (largely white/ivory/gray) with pops of hot pink, a sort of blend of Aerin Lauder’s office space and this ridiculous Manhattan apartment that the fabulously talented photographer behind the From Me To You blog recently shot:

Image from Habitually Chic blog

Images From Me To You Blog

I’m thinking of white-wash artwork (I adore this photograph on canvas by Garth Meyer — price upon request, Weylandts — it reminds me of one of my absolute favorite paintings on earth, a snowscape by impressionist Alfred Sisley), set above impressively-sized — but feminine — furniture, like this stark white buffet from Jonathan Adler ($2,500, Jonathan Adler):

Break up the monochrome by adding pops of color with vases of fresh-cut peonies (vase — $125, Kate Spade) atop a hot pink lacquer tray ($225, Jonathan Adler):

Accent with a peppy stack of Archie Grand notebooks ($10 apiece, Jasper and Black):

Add some additional contrast to the walls with some colorful sketches, like these by the one-and-only Bella Foster:

Images from Bella Foster

I’d also stack a couple of old-school white hatboxes on the floor (great for storing odds and ends — I used to keep my stationery stacked in it — $22, The Box Shoppe):

A vintage-style sofa in soft near-neutrals like this robin blue and white damask gives the room a plush feel ($578, Urban Outfitters):

I like the idea of matching the feminine daintiness of that sofa with a pair of heavier-looking armchairs situated in a separate corner of the room ($845 apiece, Crate & Barrel), topped by some spiffy pillows or a throw ($295, Jonathan Adler):

This ornate-styled white mirror would be a lovely addition ($349, ZGallerie), as would a pair of these ceramic spaniel figurines ($175 apiece, Jonathan Adler):

For a ladylike bar, I love the idea of these elegantly-designed water tumblers by Riedel ($25 for 2, Tiffany), set alongside a pretty little polka dot vase ($75, Kate Spade):

Accent with a pretty little details like this patterned box of matches ($12, iomoi), or a set of hot pink pencils ($12 for 14, iomoi) set in a pretty little tumbler:

Now kick off those shoes and dive into a yummy book…perfection.

The Little Lady, Part III: Weekend Wear

In Accessories, Jewelry, Shoes on September 28, 2010 at 10:34 am

I meant to post this on Friday, but spent the better part of my day officially changing my last name — it’s been a month and a half since I tied the knot, so it was about time.  The process was no fun (waiting in lines at the Social Security Administration and then the DMV and then officially changing my name at the bank and so forth), but the payoff was big: Mr. Magpie was thrilled and insisted on calling me “Mrs.” for most of the day.  At any rate, here’s to looking forward to the weekend (it’s not too far away…) and to all the preppy-casual looks that are inspiring me during this transitional fall weather.  I’m gearing up for a couple of weekend trips (to a fancified camping trip in Virginia for a big pig roast orchestrated by my very talented friend Orr Shtuhl, Beerspotter for the Washington City Paper’s “Young and Hungry” blog; to UVA for Homecomings and apple picking at Carter Mountain; and potentially to a weekend B&B trip with my new hubby) and am busy dreaming up an ideal “I’m-put-together-on-the-weekends-too” wardrobe.  It begins with a structured weekender.  I adore these Billy Kirk bags ($320, Billy Kirk) and have long been looking for a reason to indulge — this fall might be the perfect prompt:

(Bonus points: it’s relatively “gender neutral,” which should pacify Mr. Magpie, who always groans when he finds himself toting my bags — either Louis Vuitton or hot pink — around the airport.  He finds nothing more emasculating.)  I like the idea of wearing it with a thick-knit camel sweater ($248, Intermix Online):

I’d add on some skinnies and some kicky loafers (you know I love a pop of orangey-red — and these Tod’s loafers are no exception — $225, Yoox):

I’d add on a statement bag (I’m still dying over the Chloe Marcie — $1,790, Intermix Online) and a pair of Jackie O-style enorma-shades (dsquared, on sale for $205, Ssense):

Perhaps a classic Hermes scarf ($375, Hermes), tied artfully around the handle of the bag, is in order?

As far as jewelry, I’m liking the idea of heavy polished gold jewelry, like this chunky Balenciaga bangle ($395, MyTheresa) and this modern take on the classic signet ring ($125, CCSkye):

I’ve been swooning over the heavy gold jewelry look since I spotted Olivia Palermo’s excellently-styled, well-heeled getup at Fashion Week, posted on RDuJour last week:

Photos from RDuJour

How put-together is this little chic-pea?  Adore the gold add-ons.  (The Hermes Birkin doesn’t hurt either.)  But back to the matter at hand: weekend wear for the Little Lady.  Other things I’m looking for this season?  Feminine, fitted cardigans in  left-of-center colors like mustard yellow and pumpkin ($62, J. Crew):

Layer over a silky ivory bow-front blouse (Milly, $290, Saks) tucked into some skinny jeans:

I’d pair with some Minnetonka mocs (my favorite footwear for the season), but prim little flats (Kate Spade, $165, Bloomingdale’s) would get the job done with panache as well:

Then add these polished gold, geometric studs (Jessica Elliott, $98, Max & Chloe), a shiny oversized ring ($105, Max & Chloe), and a textured tote ($345, Brahmin):

If temps drop, cozy up to this update on the classic trench by Rebecca Minkoff ($395, Rebecca Minkoff):

Of course, going the classic route isn’t a bad option — check out the J. Crew “Icon Trench” ($298, J. Crew):

Insta-classic.  If you’re as into the “left-of-center” palette referenced above as I am, you might also consider add-ons like this Hermes-esque watch ($100, Pedre) or this mustard yellow hobo ($142, Pret-A-Beaute):

This burnt orangey-brown colored coat has been at the top of my “wait for the sale” list for weeks ($138, Anthropologie), and would look excellent paired with many of the above add-ons:

While on the subject of tailored outerwear, I d.i.e. over this Michael Kors checked trench ($756, TheOutnet):

Perfect for layering over tailored separates paired with deep red accents, like this tassel-front bag ($50, TopShop) and these cap-toe flats (on sale for $29, Baker’s Shoes):

I’m also into the idea of a tailored leather jacket ($349, Eddie Bauer — of all places!) paired with classic cat-eye glasses ($30, TopShop — and if you want a higher end version, check out The Row’s kickin cat eyed sunnies!  Label lust for sure!)

A ladylike handbag softens the aesthetic considerably, especially in this warm red hue ($295, Brahmin):

I’m also loving the idea of retro-preppy look centered around a boxy plaid shirt ($140, Toast)

Go Grace Kelly chic by adding some classic penny loafers ($110, TopShop) and this tassel-front convertible clutch-to-shoulder bag ($195, Endless):

I kind of like the idea of some bookish, retro glasses to complete the look, and those in-the-know wear Barton Perreira or Danish-designed Han (shown below — $180, Han):

Don’t forget some reading for the weekend — I was beyond tickled when Penguin re-released some of its classics with new, patterned, eye-catching covers:

(Madame Bovary is one of my top ten favorite books of all time — I need this lovely version!  In this case, yes — judge a book by its cover.)  And while we’re on the subject of artful books, I could not contain my nerdy excitement when I saw that Maira Kalman, illustrator extraordinaire, had sketched for a version of Strunk & White’s Elements of Style ($25, Barnes and Noble).  Did you read this (aka suffer through it) back in high school?  I’ll never use the word “utilize” again in my life.

Somehow I feel that the illustrations might just be “the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down.”  Now, of course, I can’t believe that it’s only Tuesday and that I have three whole days to go before it’s time to test out my preppy-chic looks…

The Chain Gang

In Accessories, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on September 27, 2010 at 1:59 pm

As if we needed any reminding, Vogue ran a page-long feature on the enduring chic-ness of the classic quilted Chanel bag in this month’s issue.  I don’t know a single woman who couldn’t add one to her wardrobe and make it work — it’s as well-suited to a 16 year old as it is to an 86 year old.  It works with the ladies-who-lunch set, the downtown-edgy-fashionistas, the label lusters, the casually chic.

I realized that lately I’ve been spotting the famous Chanel “chain” detailing on a host of items, and — I love it.  It’s certainly one way of getting that soigne Chanel vibe without throwing your savings account out the window.  Below, I’ve featured some lovable chain-detailed pieces that top my “want list” — and it all begins with these CC Skye chain cuffs ($110, CCSkye):

I love the polished gold and envision slipping them on over a long-sleeved, fitted black dress ($145, Net-A-Porter) paired with tights and these adorable gold-brooch-adorned suede pumps (Kate Spade, $325, Zappos):

I’d probably round it out with a pair of chain enorma-studs (Chanel, $330, Farfetch):

If those are too pricey, consider these Carol Marie studs ($65, Shopbop):

Either would look fetching on the weekend paired with this chain-adorned tunic top ($65, TopShop), some dark wash skinnies, and some flashy cap-toed flats (Tory Burch, $250, Jildor — love the leopard print, but could also see myself going with either a nude or a orangey-red):

Top it off with a chain-strap watch (I LOVE this little thing — Peugeot, $85, Endless) and this textured, chain-handled Kate Spade “MaryAnne” ($695, Kate Spade):

Alternately, layer this beyond adorable Milly cardigan ($375, Shopbop) atop nearly anything — a bow-front silk blouse, a tank with jeans, etc:

Word to the wise: you can get the look for less with this variation by ASOS ($75, ASOS):

I’m also loving the idea of a vintage-styled striped tee ($42.50, J. Crew) with this chain-waist skirt (Chloe, $490, The Outnet):

I’d pair it with a tiered chain necklace (Marlyn Schiff, $45, Charm and Chain) and these adorable flats ($50, TopShop)

If you really want to tie the look together (

I’m also lusting over this pricey Temperley sweater dress, with its adorable chain accents ($1,175, Net-A-Porter):

Perfect with a glossy gold oversized watch (to show that you mean business — Michael Kors, $180, Nordstrom) and some sky-high pumps (Louboutin, $595, Net-A-Porter):

Other fun little add-ons to mix in with your wardrobe?  This heavy and chic Kenneth Jay Lane necklace ($162, Charm and Chain) and this funky chain ring ($10, ASOS):

Paired with a simple black dress ($74, Shopbop), some tights, and this taupe chain-handled bag ($285, J. Crew), you’ll be insta-chic:

You might also consider swapping out some of the accents above and tying this chain-accented belt around your waist for a different kind of look ($68, Ann Taylor):

Alternately, match your belt to your J. Crew bag with this lust-worthy Chloe belt ($1,490, Net-A-Porter):

I love the way they’ve styled the belt on the site, paired with a soft peach color — just think how sweet you’d look cinching this silky blouse (also Chloe, $585, Net-A-Porter) with the above belt, some skinnies, and some greige boots (Diane Von Furstenberg, $499, Zappos):

While we’re outside of the predominantly black color palette I’ve been working with for the majority of this post, I just have to feature this Tory Burch Verona bag, which I find beyond adorable ($350, Shopbop):

I envision wearing it a huge, yummy camel sweater ($525, Barney’s), some skinny jeans or leggings, and some cognac boots ($159, Bloomingdale’s):

Another cute weekend outfit: this tweedy, chain-accented jacket ($148, AnnTaylorLoft) with a simple white tee and some skinny jeans.

Add on this CC Skye wrap bracelet ($285, CCSkye) or this eye-catching necklace ($34, Ann Taylor Loft)

…and you’re set!

The Little Lady, Part II: Out for the Evening

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on September 23, 2010 at 11:55 am

OMG — fashion overload.  I just drooled all over my keyboard while checking out Oscar de la Renta’s RTW Spring 2011 collection.  (Swoon.)  ODL can do no wrong by me, and he serves as the perfect inspiration point for today’s continuation of The Little Lady series, which takes as its subject formal/evening wear:

Images from WWD

I mean.  D.i.e.  Yes, yes, and yes.  I’m super into the classic black-on-white contrast.  To get the put-together, little lady look, consider snapping up this classically-styled asymmetrical cocktail dress (Paul & Joe, $575, Net-A-Porter) and pair it with some stunning cabochon earrings (they’re “unsigned,” but my gut tells me that they are KJL — $348, House of Lavande) and a pair of femme black heels (these are so lovely, I can hardly stand it — Valentino, $845, Net-A-Porter):

This petal clutch by Sondra Roberts (Olivia Palermo owns it in hot pink, but this creamy ivory variation is the perfect addition to the little lady’s evening wardrobe — $98, Lori’s Shoes), especially when paired with this cropped Anna Sui fur jacket ( $350, Net-A-Porter):

I love the contrast it brings to the outfit.  Lovely, lovely.  As may be apparent from the eye-catching Valentinos above, I’m all about the bow when it comes to a ladylike evening look.  Check out this to.die.for Elizabeth & James mini ($365, ShopZoe), for example, paired with these break-your-ankle Louboutins ($845, MyTheresa – fashion is worth the pain):

(Love that the pumps are called “The Miss Cha Cha” — thanks, Loubster.)  I’d add some “icing” to the mix by pairing these enamel Kenneth Jay Lane starfish earrings ($70, Pret-A-Beaute) and this glitzy bracelet (Nola Roberts, $548, Henri Bendel):

Then all you need is a classy little retro-clutch, like this Kate Spade “Lella” ($225, Kate Spade):

Or how about the stunning draping on this Vivienne Westwood gown ($520, Net-A-Porter), coupled with the drama of these KJL drops ($202, Pret-A-Beaute) and these killer ODL pumps (d.i.e. over the bow — $695, Net-A-Porter):

A vintage-styled row pearl bracelet ($78, Henri Bendel) and a bow-covered clutch (Miu Miu, $650, Net-A-Porter) finish the look:

Hint: you can get the Miu Miu look for less with this ruffled Nordstrom clutch ($78, Nordstrom):

Now, if you really want over-the-top glam, pair with a fur chubby — this channeled Juicy coat ($358, Saks) would do the job nicely:

Or go for just a little taste with this fox fur stole (Max Mara, $256, Matches):

And for the coup-de-gras?  A little Notte by Marchesa confection that I’ve been secretly keeping my eye on and dying over for weeks — I’ve wanted a dress in this style since I saw the Halston Heritage asymmetrical cape dresses this past spring, but I worried that the colors would be a bit too  bold and the cut of the dress a bit too dramatic.  This chiffon dream has my name all.over.it ($650, Net-A-Porter):

I’d pair it with this brooch-adorned heels ($78, Kurt Geiger):

I’d pair with these gold Ylang23 Vintage clips ($115, Ylang23) and a classic Amanda Pearl clutch (I’ve wanted one for so long…sigh: $1,398, Amanda Pearl):

You can get a similar look for a bit less with this Alice & Olivia Gale dress ($368, Alice and Olivia):

I’m also in.love with the idea of a stark white dress and emerald green accents — how darn chic would you be with these vintage-styled emerald enormastuds ($205, Ylang23) and this asymmetrical Robert Rodriguez Black Label frock ($495, Neiman Marcus)?

Pair with this “Palace of Mirrors” bracelet ($245, Kate Spade) and the Kate Spade “Carly” peeptoe ($298, Kate Spade):

Don’t forget to tuck this fun little emerald-adorned compact ($175, Saks) into your glitzy minaudiere (I love hard-cased clutches — Menbur, $144, Endless):

Before you head out the door, spritz on a classic perfume — I wear Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle in the evenings ($61 and up, depending on size, Sephora – Tocca’s Cleopatra is my every day scent) — and some faux cils (looooove the drama):

Bon soir!

The Little Lady, Part I: Work Wear

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Work Wear on September 21, 2010 at 12:48 pm

No matter how much I wantingly observe and report on various iterations of “the undone” or “the effortless” in fashion, let me be clear: this little magpie gravitates towards the opposite end of the spectrum, and is more commonly seen in an assortment of tucked-in, structured, ladylike separates.  (I own a bajillion and one cardigans.  Enough said.)  Perhaps this is part and parcel of a slight OCD I’ve self-diagnosed, something germane to the “I can’t sleep when my closet door is open” and “I compulsively clean the backsplash on my stove” features of my personality.  And perhaps this is why I continue to feature posts on the “slouchy, boho glam” look I envy yet cannot indulge in for fear of looking sloppy; after all, “those who can’t do, teach.”  At any rate, this post is one of a series of “Little Lady” posts I plan to develop over the next few days; it may seem a slight departure from some of my earlier features, as I’m truly reaching back into “classic” territory, where I’m most at home.

Kate Spade ad from a few seasons ago — L.O.V.E. it

For the work-a-day wardrobe, I’m all about  blouses, full skirts, and heels.  It’s a done deal in terms of flattering the silhouette and appearing tailored and tidy.  I like, for example, a frilly little sleeveless blouse ($49, J. Crew), tucked into a bold-print full circle skirt ($211, Farfetch),  paired with heels with some added interest (I love a black pump, but let’s live it up!  — I am into the spectator detailing on these Miu Mius in particular — $515, MyTheresa):

The only thing I’d add?  Some Kate Spade enorma-studs (no one does ladylike like Kate Spade — $125, Neiman Marcus) and a classy chain-handle bag ($495, Henri Bendel):

When in the mood for a softer color palette, I’m loving the gray-lavender combo these days.  Consider pairing a painterly lilac printed blouse (Rika, on sale for $114, La Garconne) with an uber-feminine ruffled skirt ($148, French Connection) and some ladylike bow-toe pumps (Christian Dior,$452, Bluefly):

A sparkling pair of amethyst studs ($300, Bounkit) and a feminine bow-bedecked bag in gray-lavender ($695, Kate Spade) are the perfect accoutrements:

For extra polish, top it all off with a coordinating lavender coat ($349, Talbot’s):

Alternately, sport this delicately-hued topper with this jewel-necked 3.1 Phillip Lim blouse ($286, My Theresa) and this lavender-striped skirt (Milly, $350, MyTheresa):

The graphic stripe and delightful pop of lilac against the stark black/white combo is beyond adorable — and somehow instantly put-together, especially when paired with this OMG-worthy Kate Spade tote ($395, Kate Spade) and some glossy black pumps (Rupert Sanderson, $595, Net-A-Porter):

The only thing you need to add is a pair of pearl-esque studs (Kendra Scott, $55, Max & Chloe) to play off the detailing of the blouse:

Ialso like the above earrings with the fiery red blouse below  (it’s so my color — $59, J. Crew) and a full black circle skirt (Charles Anastase, $465, La Garconne):

I’d spruce things up with this to.die.for Anya Hindmarch bag (adore the bow! — $845, Net-A-Porter) and these adorable Kate Spade leopard bow-toe pumps ($398, Bergdorf Goodman):

If you’re liking the more vibrant color route featured above, consider pairing this See by Chloe gold button blouse ($295, Net-A-Porter) with this bold mandarine orange tweed skirt (Adam, $110, TheOutnet):

In my opinion, a snakeskin print pump adds the perfect contrast point to the texture and color vibrancy of the skirt (the first is by Louboutin — $995, FootCandyShoes — but you can get the same look for less with the Joan & David variation beneath, $220, Nordstrom):

The only thing I’d add?  Some polished gold earrings ($185, Diani Boutique) and a textured brown tote (“The Alden,” $245, Brahmin):

I also love a blush-toned palette, featuring something like this cropped Fendi coat ($337, TheOutnet), a crisp white pencil skirt (Adam, $78, TheOutnet), and these nude Louboutins ($635, FootCandyShoes):

Pair with this adorable bow-front Valentino bag ($1,810, StyleBop) — or get the look for far less with this similarly-styled Melie Bianco tote ($86, Melie Bianco):

The only thing I’d add?  An enorma-ring (Kate Spade, $125, Neiman Marcus) and some pearl studs:

Layer it all beneath this taupey-lilac hued overcoat ($298, J. Crew):

Don’t forget your work tools — some ladylike, sharpened pencils ($15 for a set of 14, iomoi) — and some fun little notebooks (Archie Grand — a limited selection is available at J.Crew, but a more extensive set can be found for $10/pop at Jasper + Black):

(I particularly need the second one.)  A textured dusty rose organizer is the only other item I’d need ($40, Lincoln Stationer’s):

Off to work I go!  Look out for Partie Deux of this series tomorrow: The Little Lady, Part II: Out for the Evening.

’70s Subdued

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Work Wear on September 20, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Though the ’70s is remembered as a decade of fashion decadence (think Studio 54 and the over-the-top drama of the disco scene), the era had a softer side as well — one that has been winningly reinvented and reimagined all over the runway this season.  (I’ve mentioned Chloe’s “glam 70s” look 34,389 times — including in my fall edition of the Magpie Must List), so I won’t revisit that territory again, but I still swoon over it.)  Then, when I saw this shot of a NYC fashionista on The Sartorialist, I knew that the subdued side of 70s style was back in a major way.

The ’70s revisited –  image from The Sartorialist

While I’m not sure that I’m willing to advocate high-waisted, light-wash flares (perhaps too literal an interpretation of the era’s fashions), I am drawn to the overall vibe here.  A little slouchy and undone — and at the same time, sophisticated and pulled-together.  To achieve that breezy chic-ness, I’m thinking of a slouchy sweater dress in soft camel first (Rag & Bone, $325, Intermix), paired with slouchy suede boots (bonus points for the OTK style — $110, South Moon Under):

Adore the neutral palette, and envision that a 70s style maven would complete the look with a cropped fur vest of some kind — though I’d probably leave it as is, adding only a boho glam necklace — I am still in love with these slightly rocker-chic statement necklaces by Fiona Paxton ($296, TheHipChick), but I was over.the.moon when I found this far less expensive variation by Hive and Honey ($30, PiperLime):

Add a slouchy oversized clutch (Marc Jacobs, $348, Saks) and a pair of retro shades ($231, Shopbop), and you’re set:

Alternately, I’m pretty much in love with this lace dolman-sleeved top (Beyond Vintage, $180, PiperLime), which I envision pairing with skinny jeans in a lighter wash than I normally use (Paige, $190, Shopbop) and some dusty brown shoes

Pair with these cognac suede pumps (Pour La Victoire, $250, Amazon) and a 70s throwback cross-body bag (can also be worn as a clutch — $78, South Moon Under):

All you’ll need is a tassel necklace ($78, South Moon Under) and you’re done:

If you’re ready to go with the flare (I’d either do a lighter wash skinny leg or a darker wash flare to avoid looking too costumey), I’d layer a faux fur vest (I d.i.e. over this fluffy Yves Salomon vest — $595, Intermix – though I’ve seen tons of affordable versions in the faux stuff, like this BB Dakota option, available for $58 at Glik’s) atop a nondescript long-sleeved white tee ($32, J. Crew) and add some flared jeans (Seven for All Mankind, $190, Intermix):

I’d add only this to.die.for panther pendant necklace (by Kenneth Jay Lane — who else?! — $117, Pret A Beaute) and a pair of suede pumps (Pelle Moda, $150, FootNotesOnline):

I again would accent with a slouchy oversized clutch — the Marc Jacobs above is incredible, but this Mat & Nat version is a bit more wallet-friendy — and it comes in a couple of right-on-point colors ($165, Mat and Nat):

For work wear, it’s all about the washed silk shirtdress.  I am obsessed with this See By Chloe number ($595, Intermix):

Pair with this surprisingly affordable state & lake brand mini messenger (love the tassel accent — I’m all about it this season — $148, Shopbop) and a jaguar-adorned bangle (very Bianca Jagger –$74, Pret-A-Beaute):

For shoes?  These substantial-looking Talbots pumps are right on the money ($149, Talbots):

I also enjoy the contrast of a floaty, printed chiffon dress (slightly hippie in vibe) and a pair of suede slouchy boots.  I like, for example, this etched feather print (there we go again with the feather pattern) dress ($365, Diane Von Furstenberg) and some slouchy suede boots (on sale for $80, J. Jill):

If you’re more inclined towards heels, these platformed Cynthia Vincents are the apple of Rachel Zoe’s eye ($425, Singer22):

Either boot would be perfect with this adorable sueded bag (about $560, Tila March):

Alternately, how hippie chic is this floral print mini by Valdivia (on sale for $74, Shop Ever):

I like it paired with these suede, taupe colored wedges (about $420, Tila March), though any of the above pumps would work and modernize it:

For something a bit more formal, take your cues from Halston, whose diffusion line (Halston Heritage) has scored major points since its release a year ago.  (Check out  “The Halston Heritage” post for more on these over-the-top luxe looks.)  I’m thinking a full-length silky shirtdress might just be the way to go ($398, Geren Ford):

Swoon.  Slightly undone hair and high heeled sandals (extra points if they’re in suede, as below — $595, Ralph Lauren) seal the deal.

Love it!

Well, La-Ti-DOT

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, Work Wear on September 17, 2010 at 1:53 pm

At my bachelorette party this past May, my girlfriends asked me a series of questions  that they had posed Mr. Magpie (then my fiance!) in advance in order to see how our responses stacked up.  When we got to the question: “Who are your celebrity crushes?”, Mr. Magpie had (unequivocally) stated on my behalf: “Rachel Bilson and Giada de Laurentiis.”  The scary thing was: that was my exact, verbatim, unhesitating answer.  Not Brad Pitt, not Zac Efron, not Robert Pattinson.  Rachel Bilson and Giada de Laurentiis.  The latter pick is clear: she is a homemaking guru and is pretty much the peppiest, cutest little thing I’ve ever seen (we saw her do a cooking demo at the Metropolitan Cooking and Entertaining Show last fall and she is darling.  Interestingly, she also happened to be Mr. Magpie’s celebrity crush.  We are a match made in heaven).  But Bilson?  She is just pure fashion inspiration (especially since she has little size-5 feet and petite proportions, like me, so I feel like I can take on what she takes on).  I pretty much died over this elegant little polka dot chiffon dress look when I saw it a few weeks ago and have been “seeing spots” ever since:

I need it.  Love the slightly ’40s/’50s feel of it, the prim neckline, the ladylike pleating.  And so I set out to find some comparable styles to add to my own (overstuffed) closet.  I thought seriously about this Joseph dress ($569, My Wardrobe):

But will probably end up gravitating towards this far more affordable Modcloth variation ($54, ModCloth):

I would probably style it sans the motorcycle boots (though I do think they work on Bilson), but I dig the idea of adding on unexpected worn brown leather.  I might pair it with these chestnut-colored pumps ($98, Endless) and (swooooon) this Chloe “Small Marcie” (I still want the big mama version but this one is lovely as well — $1,465, Net-A-Porter):

Gorgeous.  I also die over the way Olivia Palermo styled her own polka dot dress (love it in the chiffon, which is my new favorite fabric — I want a million and one semi-sheer, printed blouses this fall):

This Parisian chic micro-dot blouse by A.P.C. may just have made its way to the top of my “must have”  list ($250, Net-A-Porter):

I like it rolled up at the cuffs, paired with jeans and some killer — and I mean kill.er. — boots ($139, Piper Lime).  I almost didn’t share the boots below because I am on such a “finder’s high” and wanted to horde my find away so no one else would buy them.  They are just too good to be true — a perfect substitution for those Loeffler Randall puppies I want so bad.

I like to mix it up by pairing black with navy (the color combo seems very urban chic to me), and would probably top it all of with something like this gold-accented Marc Jacobs tote ($398, Piper Lime), some enorma-shades (love these House of Harlows — $125, Revolve Clothing), and a fitted black blazer (Elizabeth & James, $395, Piper Lime):

This J. Crew blouse would be perfect in the ensemble above as well — and it’s a touch more affordable ($98, J. Crew):

If you can’t spring for the blouse, just snap up a breezy dotted scarf instead ($19.50, A.E.) — I love the idea of throwing this on with an otherwise straightforward work outfit to “loosen things up” a bit:

I’m also into the idea of wearing printed skirts with washed silk blouses and impressively high heels these days — love the silhouette.  Consider wearing the classic Equipment blouse ($178, Shopbop) tucked into a structured polka dot skirt (ALICE for Temperley, on sale for $126, TheOutnet):

Pair it with some fierce navy patent pumps (Pour La Victoire, $275, Piper Lime):

This Elizabeth & James pleated skirt would be a lovely alternative ($272, MyWardrobe), especially paired with unexpected greige/taupe for a tres chic Parisienne look — do you not die over the idea of wear this asymmetrical blouse (Fendi, $755, Net-A-Porter) tucked into the high, cinched waist of this skirt?!

Round it out with these affordable mushroom-color Nine West pumps ($89, Piper Lime) and this I-can’t-believe-its-Ann-Taylor tassel bag (very Lanvin — $178, Ann Taylor):

These Chanel “Daisy” studs would be the ideal add-on ($1,800, 1stDibs):

For more formal events, have I got some dotted looks for you.  First: I am this-close from buying this Alice by Temperley dress (on sale for $180, TheOutnet) for next year’s Foxfield Races.  It is beyond.

I’m guessing the only reason why I immediately tagged it as “race-appropriate” is because of Julia Roberts and her unforgettable brown-polka-dot ensemble in “Pretty Woman” (my college bestie and I would literally watch that movie on repeat…)

For something more season-appropriate, how darling would this dotted dress by Marc Jacobs ($400, Net-A-Porter) look for the holidays (you can never start planning major wardrobe choices like that too early)?

For some reason, I instantly knew that velvet shoes would be appropriate for this festive, for-the-holidays dress, and I unfortunately laid eyes on these pricey Rupert Sandersons and now cannot ban their lovely image from my brain ($790, Net-A-Porter):

Stupid price tags.  They always get in the way of a good time.  And get ready to fall in love: this Prabal Gurung dress is over the top gorgeous (once you black out the terrifyingly blank / zombie-like stare of the model — on sale for $712, Shopbop):

I’d pair it with these pretty-as-a-picture Louboutins ($848, MyTheresa):

It gets better — you can see the dress in all its retro-chic glory in action in the artful wedding shots below, which I stumbled upon while visiting Merci New York’s lovely blog:

Images from Merci New York

Do you die?  LOVE it.  If you’re look to bring a little color to the polka dot print idea, I adore this lilac Leifsdottir number from this past summer’s season (now on sale for $139, Leifsdottir – also perfect for a spring race!):

Now, I know I featured these Pour La Victoires above (in navy), but, in this patent lilac, they just go perfectly with the dress ($275, Piper Lime):

I like the way the shoes counterbalance the girly kitschiness of the dress, bringing the look back into the present day with some unexpected “let’s get down to business” ‘tude.  While we’re on the subject of color polka dot looks, check out this funky little Marni blouse ($525, Marni):

Adorable with skinny jeans, some patent red flats ($49, Endless), and bright red nails (Essie’s Russian Roulette, $8, Essie Shop):

And I just can’t get over the cheeriness of these fun polka-dotted umbrellas — the perfect way to get back at the grizzly gray weather ($125, Barney’s):

Magpie Musts: The Fall Edition

In Accessories, Shoes, Sundresses, Work Wear on September 16, 2010 at 4:09 pm

I am so.excited. about fashion this fall.  I am obsessed with the 70s luxe vibe that’s been all over the place, the resurgence of ladylike dressing, the fact that classic camel is the new (or resurrected-from-the-70s) neutral, and the plethora of fun leopard and chic fur accents that have cropped up in fashion outposts as varied as Forever 21 and Chanel.  There are so many pieces that I want to snap up, my head is spinning and my “lust list” is pages long.  (And yes, I do keep one — it’s my “little pink book.”)  So now, without further adieu: the fall 2010 Magpie Musts.

Magpie Must #1: The Blouse.

I know I’ve been blathering on about this in post after post, but I positively need one of these ladylike washed silk blouses.

I think I’m gravitating towards a “nude” color, as pictured above — something like this Reiss style is right on point ($175, Reiss):

…but you can’t go wrong with classic white ($178, Revolve Clothing) — especially from It label Equipment:

Alternately, an olive green color is a solid choice for this fall’s utilitarian chic look ($245, Net-A-Porter):

Pair with anything from skinny jeans to tweed skirts to printed minis to utility jackets.  Insta-chic.

Magpie Must #2: Classic Camel.  Everywhere.

I’ve pretty much beat this into the ground, but o.m.g. I die over the rich caramel color.

I mean.  The gold-clasped satchel, the blouse, the camel cape, the drapey wool, the red nails?!  This girl has got it going on.  I’m looking to invest in a classic camel coat — Talbots may not be the hippest label out there, but they get the classics rights ($328, Talbots):

I’ve been “I-spying” this Barney’s coat for a few weeks now — I adore the belted waist and the collarless neckline ($1,195, Barney’s):

So darlingly Jackie O-esque.  Speaking of whom — I saw this pure Jackie O dress and did a quadruple-billion take and then pouted at its price tag because I wanted it so badly and knew I’d never permit myself to snap it up (Michael Kors, $750, Yoox):

I mean.  You would be Jackie in it.

I also l.o.v.e. this tweed camel skirt (especially its equestrian vibe) — it’s The Ellison, by Ralph Lauren ($698, Saks) — but think I’m more likely to snag this far-more-affordable variation ($49, Express):

Alternately, channel Chloe by investing in a pair of wider leg camel tweed pants –

Chloe on the runway

I like Elie Tahari’s version ($232, Zappos) — and they’re perfect for pairing with one of the silk blouses featured earlier:

Magpie Must #3: The Denim Shirt.

Hannah MacGibbon (of Chloe) is pure genius, and I trust her fashion instinct with every fiber of my being.  When I saw her Fall 2010 ad campaign, I knew I had to recreate this look in some capacity or another:

I snapped up a denim button-down awhile back, and have been dutifully pairing it with a black pencil skirt, black flats, and tangles of necklaces, but my must have look for fall revolves around denim tucked into some wide-leg camel pants.  The Current/Elliot denim shirt is “It” ($198, La Garconne):

(And I love the military-style buttons on the epaulettes.)  However, you can find denim shirts at a range of retailers nowadays — I’ve seen ‘em in Gap, J. Crew, Forever 21, and right on up to Neiman’s.  I also like the idea of a denim tunic for this fall (on sale for $29, Gap), cinched with a rich leather belt ($52, Madewell):

I pretty much would kill to be able to able to pair the outfit with these Chloe cutout boots — they are out of control gorgeous ($1,295, Net-A-Porter):

Magpie Must #4: Pop of Red.

Old habits die hard, and I don’t think I’ll ever abandon my signature red nails.  Though I got into the orangey-coral-reds this summer (Essie’s Geranium and Escapades were among my favorites, but Clambake was also a regular in the rotation), I am now returning to classic, full-on red for the fall wardrobe.  I’ve been getting Russian Roulette in particular ($8, Essie Shop):

This Alexa Chung for Madewell blouse also caught my eye (I l.o.v.e. Peter Pan collars — so retro, so unexpectedly buttoned-up, and so delightfully Blair Waldorf-esque — $110, Madewell):

Meanwhile, some inexpensive red leather flats might add just the right touch to an otherwise straight forward wardrobe palette ($45, BC Footwear):

And how happy would you be seeing this candied apple red Tory Burch wallet peeking out of your handbag ($95, Tory Burch)?

Magpie Must #5: Plaid please.

This season, it’s all about the plaid (I’m actually wearing a plaid button down tucked into a high-waisted pencil skirt today!)   Madewell has some lovelies on their sale racks ($49 apiece, Madewell):

(And — related to Must #4 — I prefer a plaid with red in it.  Don’t know why.  Just a thing I have.)  Steven Alan has some lovely, well-made shirting to “check out” (excuse the wretched pun) as well (on sale for $109, Steven Alan):

I like the idea of matching a seemingly “down home” item like a plaid shirt with unexpectedly stepped-up add-ons, like glossy nude flats, a classic camel coat, or a big chain handle bag.  Balances out the “country mouse” in me.  I particularly enjoy the idea of a plaid shirt layered beneath a dress coat, as shown below –

While on the subject of outerwear and plaid, however — I mean.  Just take a gander at this incredibly chic, I-want-it-so-bad bomber by Lauren Moffatt (yes.please. — $390, Lauren Moffatt):

Ay!

Magpie Must #6: Leopard Accents.

Hope you haven’t gotten too sick of hearing about the leopard trend (it’s been so all over the place, I’m almost over it), but it looks seriously luxe paired with camel and red in particular.  Though I’ve seen the likes of Kate Moss pull off the leopard chubby, I haven’t seen a leopard-print coat that looks “rich” or “sophisticated” enough to justify purchasing.  So I’ll stick to little accents, like this darling See by Chloe crossbody bag ($364, Zappos):

I’m also mega-into these pony-hair Pigalle flats by the one and only Christian Louboutin ($775, Barney’s):

And I pretty much wear my gauzy leopard print scarf every few days ($35, Harmony Lane):

Magpie Must #7: Keep it ladylike.

In a previous post, I waxed poetic about  Louis Vuitton’s 2010 campaign, which was all about old-school, Mad Men era feminine accents.  And I’m seriously inclined to invest in some classic pieces, like these dainty kidskin gloves ($124, Forzieri) and this old school hatbox vanity ($90, TopShop):

I’ve been in the market for a ladylike thin-strap leather watch, a la Hermes, and this Peugeot standout may just have won my affection (without robbing my bank account –  on sale for $50, Endless):

Now, if I could just gather the funds for this Hitchock Heroine structured crocodile bag (Nancy Gonzalez, $3,200, Net-A-Porter)…

Magpie Must #8: Fur Flair.

Regardless of whether you go real or faux, there has been so much fur out there this season, I can hardly help myself.  I’ve already advocated for the fur vest in past posts (the one below is by Ann Taylor Loft, but is not yet available in stores — check out Rachel Zoe’s version from her line for QVC — $79, QVC or BB Dakota’s affordable options — $65, Shopbop):

If you want just a touch of the trend, try out this uh.may.zing stole from TopShop ($50, TopShop) or these DVF earmuffs (to die! — $95, Net-A-Porter):

And if you’re into the Mongolian fur trend that J. Crew’s been spearheading –

– well, beware the price tag.  That stuff is expensive.  You can get “just a taste” with one of these little stoles from their collection (only available in J. Crew stores at present — $98):

(P.S. In a dazed, shopping-addicted state one sleepy Wednesday afternoon, I randomly ordered a stole of this ilk by Graham and Spencer on final sale from SSense for $112 (down from $250).  I now see it hanging in my closet every day and tilt my head curiously: “Now where and how will I wear this?!”  So think seriously about a frivolous purchase like this, planning out specific looks you can sport it with.  I’m sure I’ll figure something out but…I must have blacked out for that purchase.)

I also toyed with the idea of the kids’ size vest from Crewcuts, but it’s pricey ($398!)

Still.  It looks pretty kickin.

Magpie Must #9: Unexpected Prints.

I l.o.v.e. Tucker by Gaby Basora blouses because they come in the kitschiest, most unexpected prints and patterns, as below ($264, Saks ; $275, Piper Lime; $280, Net-A-Porter):

I like them paired with skinny jeans and flats or high waisted pencil skirt with prim heels for work.  BTW, remember my “Birds of a Feather” post?  I featured an Amanda Uprichard blouse in a fetching feather print ($167, Piper Lime):

Get the look for muchmuchmuchmuch less ($14.50 to be exact!) at Forever 21!  You’re welcome.

But back to Tucker — you can also get that look for muchmuchmuchmuch less thanks to TARGET, which unveiled their designers-for-less collection by Tucker just this past Monday (and yes, I’ve already snapped up a few of the pieces — they are too.good.to.be.true!)

Part of the Tucker-for-Target ad campaign

Just check out how chic this little bargainista is wearing the Tucker for Target blouse:

From 9-to-5 Chic Blog

Love a good price!

Magpie Must #10: Moc it out.

This one goes without saying given my near over-obsession with the classic Minnetonka (I’ve featured them here and here and here.  And probably multiple other times as well.)  Do yourself a favor and snag a pair.  They are little pillows of joy (…what?) for your weary, high-heel-suffering feet and I love the little devil-may-care ‘tude they bring to any outfit ($45, Zappos):

Now get shopping, little lady!

The Thrill of the Chase

In Accessories, Shoes, Sundresses on September 15, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Mr. Magpie loves his issues of Garden & Gun magazine.  No, he doesn’t garden and no, he doesn’t hunt (though I know he wishes he could take on both), but it’s easy to see the appeal of the magazine once you flip through its glossy pages: the photography is absolutely breath-taking, and the featured articles are fascinating and so refreshingly invested in real, salt-of-the-earth people and their private narratives of accomplishment and artistry that they consistently catch me off guard.  These honest stories are a welcome departure from the pseudo-journalistic pieces I encounter in my fashion magazines, which tend to feature self-involved tales of tormented individuals of one ilk or another (“I used to be a drug addict,” “I used to be anorexic,” “I used to hate my mother,” etc.)  Case in point: I was browsing the Garden & Gun website, as I am prone to do when in need of some eye candy, and I found myself completely absorbed by a feature on a Virginia gentleman who breeds the oldest beagle pack in America.

Photos from Garden & Gun

Not only was I transfixed by the gorgeous spread, which brought back warm memories of fall in Charlottesville (Mr. Bryan Hunter, the breeder, lives in Albemarle County), but I found myself enthralled by the rich, polite timbre of a that old Virginia drawl coming through the self-narrated article: “When it comes to voices in tune, none hold a candle to the Waldingfield Beagles, this storied pack that has kept Eastern cottontail rabbits minding their p’s and q’s since 1885.”  Of course, I was instantly inspired by the aesthetic, conjuring up outfits punctuated by tweedy equestrian pieces, lived-in leather, and textured knits.  The hunt was on.  It begins with a tweed blazer –

I’ve featured the BB Dakota “Douglas” in the past — it’s affordable and right on point for this season ($95, Dakota Collective), but Ralph Lauren’s Daryn Tweed Hacking Jacket is the real deal ($1,398, Ralph Lauren).  If you’re looking for something even wallet-friendlier, check out Tinley Road’s Tweed Equestrian Jacket ($59, Piper Lime).  Wear with skinny jeans and some lived-in leather boots — don’t go too literal with a riding boot that could pass for real equestrian gear, or you’ll end up looking like Michaele Salahi when she was dressed to the nines for her polo lesson on “The Real Housewives of D.C.” (if you didn’t understand that reference: good for you.)  I like these more-fashion-than-function Miu Mius ($761, My Theresa):

Because you’re working with two structured centerpieces (boots and a blazer), make sure to soften it up with some cozy knits — this drapey cashmere sweater in oatmeal fits the bill ($155, Shopbop):

Then all you need is a supple leather bag, and you’re set.  I absolutely die over these YSL “Chyc” bags ($1,685, Saks), especially in the tobacco leather:

For more affordable variations, consider the Brompton ($278, J. Crew) or the Marc Jacobs “Sophie” ($478, Shopbop):

Now, dressing with panache is, at heart, a balancing act.  I mentioned above that you don’t want any “official-looking” riding boots, but that edict applies only when you are wearing other equestrian-inspired pieces (and hence could wind up looking like you’re in a preemptive Halloween costume of some sort / playing dress-up).  You can, however, pull them off with a little plaid dress ($53, ASOS) — the boots below are by Ralph Lauren (who else? — on sale for $480, Farfetch):

Layer beneath a snuggly oversized camel coat or cape.  The fashion world has been all atwitter about the Tory Burch Aaron coat ($795, Tory Burch), but you can get the look for far less at ASOS ($134, ASOS):

All you need is a tweedy little tote like this TopShop find (love the splash of mustard yellow — $90, TopShop):

And while we’re on the subject of capes, I’ve just got to feature J. Crew’s eye-catching Islington plaid poncho ($1,195, J. Crew).  I l.o.v.e. how it was styled in their fall lookbook:

So cozy for a fall train trip to the countryside, paired with skinny jeans and Frye’s “Dorado” boot ($458, Zappos):

Tote your belongings around in one of iomoi’s personalizable canvas totes — I basically died and went to heaven when I discovered this site and the range of graphics you can have displayed (alongside your monogram!) on your own bag.  For the purposes of this post, I’m loving this horse print ($88-$168 depending on size of bag, iomoi):

For luggage, how about this Filson duffle ($295, Steven Alan)?

Alternately, how about this cozy poncho by H&M (only $20!)?  I managed to find one of the last two in stock at the Georgetown outpost — it’s been in all the ads and hence has gone quickly, so check your local store soon…

Perfect with jeans and these Tory Burch boots ($495, Footnotes):

Top it off (in truly cold weather) with this yummy oatmeal coat ($550, Loeffler Randall) and pack the essentials in this weekender ($168, Fossil):

Alternately, pair a military-inspired olive wool sweater (Marc Jacobs, $230, Net-A-Porter) with jeans and rugged-looking boots ($110, Free People):

Finish it off with a cape-like topper — I love this textured version by Marc by Marc Jacobs ($398, My Theresa) but this inexpensive Newport News version ain’t bad either (only $29!, Newport News) and a boxy bag (Rebecca Minkoff, $295, ShopTheTrend):

Don’t you love the proportions and accents?  It’s a citified version of the classic saddle bag.  For something a bit more stylized (i.e. you just want to look like you fit into the Virginia countryside), consider the tights-with-shorts option that’s been so big this season.  I’d begin with a classic button-down (Ralph Lauren’s Chelsea Slim-Fit, $125, Ralph Lauren) tucked into a tweedy pair of shorts like these Free Peoples would be perfect ($86, Free People):

Then add a nubby, yummy sweater ($108, Free People) and a utility jacket ($148, J. Crew) for the ultimate in layered-chic:

Wear with Wellies (the Hunters in classic green are essentials — the cheapest I’ve seen them is $99 at Dover Saddlery) for a devil-may-care attitude:

Perfect for traipsing around…whether you’re in hunting territory or not.

Happy hunting!  (And how could you not be happy after seeing the precious little faces below?!)

Yay!  A new address is always cause for celebration!  September is (in the fashion world) a month of reinvention, new beginnings, and fresh trends, so it’s just perfect that I managed to make my way to the new domain name this crisp near-fall day in mid-September.  While I had intended to finish a post on the fur trend or to perhaps reveal some of my favorite beauty products of the moment in today’s premiere “issue,” I was too caught up in “new zip code” excitement and just had to feature something a bit…glitzier.  Something festive.  A few weeks ago, I featured a  post on sequins for daytime.  Today we’ll eschew the careful balancing act I’d advocated there and go “full glitz”: all I want to see right now is glitter, sequins, and sparkle.  Luckily for us, retailers are delivering in a big time — high shine is where it’s at.

To begin with: can I please own these Kate Spade puppies ($325, Saks)?  I mean.  A pink heel?  A glittered slingback?  A bow-toed peeptoe?  Yes, please.  I like the idea of wearing them with dark-wash skinny jeans and a floaty little top for a night out.  Or how about this glittery little clutch by the one and only Anya Hindmarch ($395, Net-A-Porter)?

Now, I must admit that the phrase “full glitz” has been not-so-furtively filched from the show “Toddlers and Tiaras,”  TLC’s disturbing documentary-style reality show covering beauty pageants for children, largely in the south and midwest.  (Maybe they only exist there?)  Don’t judge, but I’ve been staying up a tad-too-late watching on demand episodes (thank you, Mr. Magpie, for setting me up with DVR and On-Demand.  Love it.)  The show is terrifying and riveting at the same time — you’ll see toddlers throwing tantrums because they don’t want to be spray-tanned and hair-teased and made-up, parents spending well beyond their means to sustain their daughters’ presence on the pageant circuit (“full glitz” dresses can cost around $2K a pop, and they are hideous little be-glittered, be-spandexed, floofy, figure-skater-gone-wrong deals), and — perhaps worst of all — ties between contestants broken on the basis of “facial beauty.”  (Stomach churn — it’s like watching girls develop self-esteem issues in slow motion.)  While the pageantry is upsetting, I l-o-o-o-v-e the phrase “full glitz” and have appropriated it for my own needs, because everyone needs “full glitz” some days — you know, when the minimalista trend just ain’t cutting it for you, and you need a little pep in that step…you know, something like this to.die.for dress (obsess over the details with me — do you not live for the little star print pattern?! — $370, La Garconne), paired with these to-good-to-be-true Louboutins ($1,895, Barney’s):

In a getup like that, you should probably walk around accompanied by Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights” song, which pretty much makes me feel like a flashy celebrity anytime I put it on.  Also goes well with all things bling-y — maybe this gorgeous druzy ring by Marcia Moran ($198, Rain Collections) or this Alexis Bittar bangle ($250, Nordstrom)?

Check out 1stdibs.com for vintage jewelry finds up for grabs — I drool over these unbelievable Christian Dior enormastuds, and am devastated that they’ve already been snapped up:

Heirloom-worthy for sure.  I may just have to console myself with this fun little bracelet, to be worn with silky little tops and sky high heels on the weekend ($48, Nordstrom):

Or how about one of these fab little animal rings by my favorite costume jewelry designer, nOir (rings range in price, but everything is on sale right now — snap.them.up! — $68-$120, Noir Jewelry)?  I own the little koi fish ring and like to add it on when I’m wearing a combo of navy and black for a night out.

And how over the top would you look pairing a simple silky white blouse (THE item of the season, especially the original “slim fit signature” by Equipment — wear with everything — $174, Pink Mascara) with a “full glitz” skirt like this little Vince number ($295, Saks)?

I’m also in love with the glitzy drama of these little ribbon tie necklaces ($158 apiece, Nordstrom):

So fun and effervescent — as are these little “glitterati” flats, which add just the right amount of pizzazz for everyday situations that need, well, a little pizzazz ($59, ModCloth):

And how about these blinged out graphite-colored Weitzmans ($355, Zappos), or for a little SPLASH, this mini coin purse($20, Zappos)?

Get your glam on!  And welcome home!

Birds of a Feather…

In Accessories, Jewelry, Shoes, Work Wear on September 14, 2010 at 2:40 pm

It’s fitting, in a way, that I’ve had feathers on the brain lately, since it’s nearly fall, when all birds fly south for the winter.

I’ve noticed feather detailing and prints all over the place this season, and love the vintage — occasionally kitschy– aesthetic both evoke.  Check out, for example, this feather-print silk cardigan by Winter Kate (Nicole Richie’s hippie-chic line — $216, Shopbop):

I love the idea of slipping it on over some skinny jeans (Hudson, $165, ChickDownTown) paired with spiffy black flats (adore the gold tassel detailing on these Jeffrey Campbells — $125, FootNotesOnline) and an oversized black tote ($198, Ann Taylor):

Add a pair of don’t-talk-t0-me shades (sorry, but there are times when a gal just needs to get.things.done — and I kind of dig these Balenciagas — $350, Balenciaga…Kourtney Kardashian rocks them; hence, I need them) and some enorma-studs (I know I’ve featured this pair a bunch of times, but they’re perfect: affordable, versatile, and oversized — $25, TopShop), and you’re ready for some aggressive errand-running:

I’m also pretty much dying over this breezy Kyumi feather-print blouse ($177, Thistle & Clover) — it’s got the camel color down, so I can just imagine contrasting its airiness with some of the richer camel wools and suedes I’ve been seeing this season:

Love its slightly retro boxiness.  I’d pair it with skinny jeans and these suede, feather-accented flats ($110, Banana Republic):

For added warmth in the chillier fall weather, slip a yummy cardigan on over it all ($80, TopShop) and top it all off with a bold necklace (House of Harlow, on sale for $133, Revolve Clothing) and some aviators ($139, Ray-Ban):

The unexpected color combination of this Amanda Uprichard blouse arrested my attention ($167, Piper Lime), though I have to admit I’m a bit put off by the line’s blatant appropriation of the Tucker brand bit (i.e. blousey tops in unconventional, slightly weird prints):

Still, I like the idea of wearing it with skinny jeans and some greige riding boots this fall ($129, SouthMoonUnder):

To avoid looking too matchy-matchy or too clashy-clashy, work in shades of gray/greige, as in the smokey brown-gray above and the lighter “putty” color of this gorgeous messenger ($79, BagHaus):

Round out with a fist full of bangles of differing widths/styles — I’m bananas over this “Give It a Whirl” idiom bracelet by Kate Spade ($48, Kate Spade), and I’d pair it with a stack of these wispy little Argento Vivos ($98 for 3, Nordstrom) — as well as these organic-looking Bing Bang by Anna Sheffield studs in polished gold ($88, Oak NYC):

Alternately, I like the idea of sprucing up an everyday LBD (for work or play — I like this long-sleeved, simple, fitted dress by 3 Dots, $74, Shopbop) with this ribbon-tie feather necklace ($14.50, Forever 21):

Spice it up with some patterned/textured pumps — I’d either go with a suede in an unexpected color (gray?) or these to.die.for snakeskin Louboutins ($995, FootCandyShoes):

And, for arm candy, this slouchy off-white carry-all ($92, Vieta) — I like the way the different textures (feather, cotton, snakeskin, and leather) play off of one another in this look:

Alternately, spruce up any old everyday work-wardrobe with some feather accents — I wear a button down and pencil skirt frequently, swapping in and out different statement necklaces and earrings and various fun-loving shoes.  I’m tempted to add this necklace to the repertoire ($116, Farfetch):

How cool against a solid white sweater or — better yet — striped navy and white tee ($60, Chance Co) tucked into a black pencil skirt (Adam, $78, TheOutnet) with black pointy-toed flats (Pour La Victoire, $109, Endless)?

Alternately, think Blair Waldorf (PS: the countdown is on: Gossip Girl resumes this upcoming Monday…), and add a fun little feather headband to the mix ($83, Luisa Via Roma):

Pair with otherwise straight forward separates, like this roomy “borrowed from the boys” pullover ($158, Steven Alan) atop a pair of black leggings with some patent ballerina flats (Lanvin, $535, Barney’s)

I’d add a tough-looking bag (loveee the Balenciaga “Giant Part Time” — $1,895, Balenciaga) and some Ray Ban Wayfarers ($139, Ray-Ban):

And maybe a little feather-print scarf by We Are Owls ($218, Shopbop) as the finishing touch?

Feathers are just as pertinent for more formal-wear, and can add a sense of vintage finery to a look.  How to.die.for are these affordable feather clutches ($42 each, Asos)– I love both shades a little too much…can’t I get them both?

Or how about — taking things a step further — the J. Crew Martinete jacket (apparently it’s sold out, but they insist you contact them to see if they can “work their magic” to get you one — $1,200, J. Crew):

Or go super formal with this glitzy feather patterned mini by the ever talented Matthew Williamson (on sale for $1,038, Matthew Williamson)?

And if you just want a little taste of the trend, consider snapping up one of these lovely pieces: a Tucker tunic ($308, Les Nouvelles – perfect with worn in boots like these Madewells — $298, Madewell — and skinny jeans!)

Or maybe a fun feather-accented necklace, like this version from Juicy Couture (on sale for $98, Nordstrom) or this version from Noir ($165, Shopbop)?

The perfect adornment for a little magpie :)

Cha-CHUNG

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Shoes, Sundresses on September 14, 2010 at 2:37 pm

You know when someone suddenly appears everywhere in the fashion world?  His or her name just starts magically appearing all over the place — it’s just out there, in the fashion ether?  I think it’s safe to say that Alexa Chung, the British model and TV mogul, is just such a person.  I had been working on an Alexa-centered post for the past few days and then — WHAM! — today, in my inbox, Madewell alerted me that her new line for the company had been released.  No better time than the present to feature her in that case.  What I like about Alexa is that she has her finger on the pulse in terms of what girls want to wear now (she’s all over military-inspired looks, leopard prints, and even clogs — trendy, trendy, trendy), but it looks effortless, and always has her own spin.

How to get her peculiarly British brand of cool?  A uniform of layered knits, black tights, chunky footwear, oversized carryalls (“It” bag designer Mulberry has a bag named after her — the Alexa), and the requisite pop of leopard print.  I’d begin with this See by Chloe blush silk dress ($390, Net-A-Porter):

Pull on some opaque black tights ($12.50, Lori’s Shoes) and add a slouchy carryall (Marc Jacobs, $558, Shopbop):

Black, lace-up, lug-soled boots seem to be her footwear of choice (she’d probably favor something like this Tory Burch military boot) — but I think a straightforward black suede bootie is far more wearable ($180, Nine West):

She almost always throws on an unexpected topper — in this case, a grandfather cardigan ($99, J. Crew) or ruched-sleeved black blazer ($125, TopShop) would be ideal:

While on the subject of outerwear, if you’re a true Chung chica, you absolutely need a sporty utility jacket (to be worn with everything).  Chung loves her Barbour coat, but you can get the look for less with Gap’s long anorak in olive ($89, Gap):

Layer it atop a cozy gray cardi (See by Chloe, $395, Net-A-Porter), striped tee ($60, Chance Boutique), and pair of black shorts (Elizabeth and James, $225, Diani Boutique):

Pair with requisite black tights (patterned if you dare!) and some cap-toed flats — she’d probably gravitate towards these Chanels ($575), but you can get the look for less with these TopShop variations ($55, TopShop):

Other options?  A boxy leopard-print silk blouse (T-Bags, $170, Net-A-Porter — P.S. get the look for less with Ann Taylor’s $78 version) worn with cut-off denim shorts (she’s a self-proclaimed denim addict — Joe’s, $98, ChickDownTown):

Add black tights and — because I am not yet on the clogs bandwagon (I know they’re “hip,” but…they’re chunky) — these clog-esque pumps ($129, Dolce Vita):

(I kind of like the look of the sculpted heel — borrowed from YSL, no doubt.)  The Mulberry “Alexa” bag would, of course, be a natural add-on ($1,250, Mulberry), as would this snuggly oversized cardi (Lutz & Patmos, $115, TheOutnet):

Or perhaps this silky blouse in the loveliest of rosy pinks, from her own diffusion line for Madewell ($110, Madewell), paired with a fitted black skirt ($65, TopShop) and some tweedy flats (Marc Jacobs, $340, Bluefly):

Very Alexa when paired with an unexpected cropped denim jacket ($89, Mango), some patterned tights, and this cross-body, be-tasseled bag (don’t you die over it?!  — and it’s affordable, ringing in at $118, Ann Taylor)

No need to be afraid of patterned tights — just check out how chic she looks:

And how comfy-chic would this little sweater dress by Alexander Wang look this fall ($128, Bird)?

Chung would probably wear it over a floral print dress, like this Maje crepe version ($230, Net-A-Porter) and these Chanel-esque captoe pumps ($109, ASOS):

(She is the queen of mixology.)  I could see her just as easily rocking this See by Chloe printed dress ($525, Net-A-Porter) beneath this bulky twill anorak (Phillip Lim, $995, Net-A-Porter):

Now, a few last minute additions to the Chung list.  If you’ve got to go with a clog, I’d go with this Michael Kors version.  It’s properly proportioned and I like the polished gold against the rich black suede ($250, ShoptheShoeBox):

Hm.  She kinda rocks it.  I’m still wary.

If you’ve still not found the perfect leopard accent, this Lanvin mini bag might make you take the plunge ($1,555, Net-A-Porter):

Alternately, this far-less-expensive Ann Taylor leopard clutch is tempting ($138, Ann Taylor), and this Be & D satchel ($995, Bloomie’s) has Alexa written all over it:

Love it!

Minimalista

In Accessories, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, Work Wear on September 8, 2010 at 6:25 pm

I never thought I would be advocating a minimalist approach to fashion — I’m more of the “pile it on” school of thought when it comes to jewelry, and I love to experiment with patterns and colors.  So what gives?  Two words: Stella McCartney.  I died when I saw her pared down yet effortlessly, mind-blowingly chic Fall 2010 collection.  I mean.  Have gray pants and kitten heels ever looked so slick?

A Stella Study in Gray

I am seriously digging the proportions: tailored pants, slightly boxy tops, and leg-lengthening pointy-toed heels.  And all in unfussy monochromatics.  What eye-catching restraint!  Stella: you are genius.

More Stella

And More Stella

What’s less is most certainly more in this case.  I cannot wait to test-drive.  Take a slightly boxy top in unassuming gray — this little Helmut Lang is perfect ($175, TheOutnet) — and pair with tailored black pants (these Thakoons are for you label lusters out there! — $525, La Garconne):

Add a pair of uber-unfussy pointy toed shoes — these Gabrielle Rocha come in a range of on-point-for-the-season colors (including camel!) and are pleasantly affordable ($59, Zappos):

Once a magpie, always a magpie: I’d need to add some adornment, but would keep it low-key — just a silver cuff (I’ve long wanted this Paloma Picasso for Tiffany “bone cuff” — $800, Tiffany — how chic!?) and some super understated polished silver studs ($32, Nordstrom):

Personally, when I’m shopping for the look, however, I’d save on the black pants and invest in the shoes.  I’d pair a boxy top (Gryphon, on sale for $207, Les Nouvelles) with some inexpensive pants-of-the-season: I’m eager to get my rear end to lower-end retailers this afternoon to try on some of their offerings in terms of cropped, slim-cut black pants — the J. Crew Minnie is a classic (pictured below, on sale for $39, J. Crew), but I’m also interested in taking Gap’s Premium Collection of black pants out for a spin (new this season — I’m in love with the slim crop variation — $59, Gap):

I’d pair them with The Stella McCartney heels ($645, Neiman’s) and a winning greige bag, like this to.die.for Givenchy ($1,566, MyTheresa):

For dressier occasions, pair the above bag with a simple asymmetrical dress in stark white (Michael Kors, $635, TheOutnet) and some killa pumps (literally — you risk your life in these uber-high Louboutins, but damn, you look good — $755, Net-A-Porter):

Alternately, for work-wear, I daydream about this Miu Miu number ($1,120, Net-A-Porter) with some right-on-point gray suede pumps (affordable to boot! — $120, Banana Republic):

And how sleek would you look layering this o.m.g. Stella coat ($1,107, TheOutnet) atop an all-business gray sheath (adore this Richard Nicoll number — $788, MyTheresa — but you can find less expensive variations at Ann Taylor and J. Crew) and some fierce platforms (my boss owns these Pour La Victoire “Irinas” in glossy black and kills in them; they’re a lot less scary in person, especially in dove gray — $250, Wink NYC):

Because MK and Ashley Olson have been all.over the minimalist trend for years (they’re almost always ahead of the curve — perhaps a bit too far ahead of the curve, as I often find their styles alienatingly avant-garde — what’s with the cross-knuckle rings?!  They scare me.), I’ve got to nod in their direction with this column dress in stark white (Dar Ti, $300, Shopbop):

Pair with substantial sandals in unexpected gray — these Pour La Victoires ($165, Bluefly) have had my eye for awhile, but I wasn’t quite sure how I’d style them until now:

Ashley and MK approve.  As does my fashion designer sister, who has worked to convince me of this aesthetic for, like, decades.  I’ve always wriggled away but I now see the genius of her foresight — the exercise of wise restraint when dealing with gorgeous, solid separates truly lets the beauty of the design shine through.  And it feels zen-like, uncluttered, fresh.

While on the subject of LWDs (I know it’s after Labor Day, but this look means business and can most definitely get away with winter white!), I’ve just got to feature this Calvin Klein sheath ($1,295, Net-A-Porter) — not only is it the perfect capstone piece for any minimalista, but it’s by Calvin Klein, father of the minimalist, monochromatic movement!

Go Gwnyeth Paltrow on us and throw on a sleek gray nubby blazer.  This McCartney piece is positively iconic ($2,095, Net-A-Porter) but this fraction-of-the-price BB Dakota variation has most definitely made my fall must-have list ($95, Shopbop):

Either would look killer with gray suede pumps  — see above for options, or go with these classic Delmans ($295, ShoptheShoebox):

Another surprising way of nailing the minimalist look this season — and believe me, I never thought I’d be advocating for this: leather skirts (just the phrase reminds me of chintzy pleather and studs at a biker bar — ick).  They’ve cropped up in the collections of the most unexpected of designers, from Rag and Bone to gasp-worthy,  prim-and-proper Celine:

A smattering of Fall 2010 leather looks on the runway

Celine — die.over.it.

Delightful minimalistic restraint on the Celine runway

More leather from Celine

Um, how is it possible that leather looks so…Carolyn Bessette Kennedy (another dazzling minimalista, and it’s no surprise, since she worked for Mimimalisto King, Calvin Klein)?

The Kennedys

This is definitely a situation for proceeding with caution.  A straight forward white button-down or this bow-neck blouse ($185, Rebecca & Drew) with a trim pencil skirt (Theory, $379, Zappos) and some serious heels (Louboutin, $595, Net-A-Porter) is all you need:

Because the look is so refined and scaled-back, you can get away with a slightly louder print on the handbag without losing your minimalista touch.  I say this because I’m eagerly chomping at the bit in anticipation of featuring this swoonworthy Celine tote (ever since Pheobe Philo took over at Celine, I’ve seen good, GOOD things — including this jaw-droppingly gorgeous ad):

Celine ad

Mega-swoon.  Because I’m pretty sure you have to Be Somebody slash have a bajillion dollars to snag that puppy, some more affordable alternatives include this unexpected find from Johnston and Murphy ($298, Johnston & Murphy) and this affordable TopShop lovely ($80, TopShop):

Pretty much obsess over the latter in particular.  It’s now joined the ranks of my fall wish list.  Sigh.  If the leather skirt is too much for you — well, first take a looksie at the ever-put-together Gwyneth P. and reconsider — and then consider subbing out for suede ($160, Karen Millen):

And, finally, some minimalista staples — ways of getting the look but with items that you can repurpose in myriad ways.  You’ll need a sharp-looking black blazer — this Elizabeth and James version is a classic (probably because MK and Ashley are the design geniuses behind this line — $395, Shopbop):

(Madewell has a solid, less expensive alternative for $168.)  Gray tops of any variety are a  must — I loveee this versatile silky ACNE top ($330, Net-A-Porter), but think this J. Crew boyfriend sweatshirt will come in handy on a weekly/daily basis this fall ($69, J. Crew):

As for footwear: pared-down, straight-forward leather boots are the way to go.  I adore the color of these nude booties (Schutz, $220, Shopbop), but these black Loeffler Randalls are beyond classic ($695, FootNotesOnline):

At a loss for styling?  MK’s got it down pat here.  Love the proportions.

Funny how it works: scale back and yet amp up on shine…

Town Mouse, Country Mouse

In Accessories, Shoes, Work Wear on September 7, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Mr. Magpie and I were up in rural Ohio for a beautiful, rustic-style wedding on a farm this past weekend, and while we could not stop commenting on the crisp, cool air and the beautiful, nearly-fall foliage, the experience reconfirmed what I’ve long known: that this little Magpie is most definitely a city gal.  Driving through remote parts of the midwest was lovely, but I missed the hustle-bustle of city life.  My morning jog through “town” felt a bit unnerving: not a soul in sight on the Sunday morning streets; nary a car to distract me from my slow-moving progress (it was cold and I just could not get into a rhythm).

After I mentioned my discomfort with the deserted ghost town vibe I was getting, Mr. Magpie reminded me of his longtime dream of owning and operating a small farm outside Charlottesville, and that I should probably begin to negotiate with the idea of becoming a “country mouse” for at least part of the year.  (Mr. Magpie is endlessly fascinating to me in this way: he is an unexpected and mysterious mix of the dapper prepster and the outdoorsy adventure-man.  On the one hand, he’s the best-dressed guy I’ve ever met and he cares about things like how to fold a pocket square and pair printed ties with striped shirts; on the other: he is one of those guys who will have blood gushing out of his elbow and not notice or care until you point it out to him, at which point he’ll casually glance down and shrug it off — “I dunno how I got that.”  How did this man come to be?)  The comment sparked a little fashion challenge that preoccupied the majority of our bajillion hour road trip home, however: what would a “country mouse” version of this little Magpie look like?  What would she have packed for this Labor Day weekend trip?

Step 1: Replace label-studded luggage with utilitarian-chic overnight bag.  Though I love my little Louis duffel, it just doesn’t work outside the city.  I’d replace it with a Klein canvas tool bag ($90, Klein Collections):

Step 2: Retool city slicker travel outfit (blue shirt dress, leopard print scarf, statement necklace and ring, and gold sandals) with down-to-earth separates, like a plaid shirt ($150, Neiman’s), a puffer vest ($118, J.Crew), and some lived-in jeans (7 for All Mankind, $198, ChickDownTown):

I think you could get away with Minnetonka Mocs if you’re so inclined (I’m a woman in love — I cannot stop obsessing over them), but Frye boots are a solid choice as well (I like the “Paige” tall boots in dark brown, but they have tons of styles — $348, Heery’s):

One of Southern Proper’s “Frat Hats” might be an appropriate addition (also comes in camo print, if you are so inclined — $25, SouthernProper):

Step 3: Cleanse wardrobe of prints, sticking to neutrals like khaki, hunter green, rust red, and faded gray.  Stock up on worn-in knits — simple tees ($19.50, Madewell) that can work effortlessly with a utility jacket ($265, PiperLime) and easy-on knit sweater ($129, Eddie Bauer):

Step 4: Denim.  Lots of it.  The Current/Elliott “Perfect Shirt” is pretty much the It item in terms of the “work shirt” trend that took over this season (I’ve seen it on sale for $122 at Bergdorf Goodman, but you can buy it pretty much everywhere and in a number of washes):

Step 5: Load up on heavy fabrics.  We were in for a big surprise when the temperatures dipped into the low 50s — I was c-o-o-old!  I wanted lots of heavy wools, furs, and corduroys for comfort.  Lucky for those country mice out there, shearling is BIG this season, as was demonstrated on the runway –

Shearling looks at, from left to right: Celine, Burberry Porsum, and Derek Lam

Shearling at Rag & Bone

…and though I can’t quite get on board with the shearling-collar coat trend, I’m kind of obsessing over this affordable rich leather tote with shearling lining/trim ($60, ASOS):

I know it won’t “warm” you exactly, but it just looks so yummy and vintage-cool.  Something that will keep you toasty?  These shearling gloves…die.over.them ($196, ShopSavannah):

Hm, perhaps country living ain’t so bad after all…

Tailgate Tactics

In Accessories, Shoes, Sundresses on September 3, 2010 at 5:43 pm

It’s football season, as I was ever-so-painfully reminded last weekend when Mr. Magpie’s Fantasy Football League draft took place.  (I’m sorry to sound snide, but I just do not understand the whole “fantasy sports” concept.  I also do not understand sports, as a general proposition, so perhaps that’s part of the problem.  Mr. Magpie tried his darnedest to dream up some sort of comparison that I could understand — “it’s like fantasy shopping, but for guys” he claimed — and I’m still lost.  To quote Carrie Bradshaw: “I like my money where I can see it: hanging in my closet.”)  But while I don’t care for the sportsmanship and drama on the field, I do enjoy a tailgate, and I couldn’t be more geared up for attending some of UVA’s games this fall, especially after seeing Tommy Hilfiger’s unexpectedly delicious ad campaign this fall:

Tommy Hilfiger’s Fall 2010 Ad Campaign

Now, though I adore the fine old Virginia tradition of dressing up for football games (bowties and dresses all the way — don’t get me started on the “Sea of Orange” trend), the cooler fall weather often thwarts my designs on easy breezy sundresses and Jack Rogers and makes heavier wardrobe decisions a necessity.  And this fall, I’m absolutely ga-ga over the idea of cozy camel and gray knits, slouchy leather bags, and the occasional appearance of Fair Isle patterning.  I would recommend a yummy cowl-neck sweater dress (Bird, $400, Net-A-Porter) as a staple for outdoor tailgating in the crisp autumn weather –

Pair with low-wedge boots (you know I’m bananas about the Loeffler Randall “Riley” OTK — check them out in this gorgeous tobacco color! — $825, Loeffler Randall) and a roomy tote (I’m normally not a Coach brand lover, but the new Kristin pleated satchel is too good to be true — $398, Coach):

Alternately, I like the idea of serious layering — perhaps this striped tee ($42.50, J. Crew) beneath a nubby sweater-cape (I like this ModCloth version — $54, ModCloth — and this amazing find from Old Navy (!) — $39.50, Old Navy), atop a pair of dark wash skinnies?

Tuck the jeans into the Riley OTKs or add a simple pair of cognac flats — I adore these bow-toe Pour La Victoires (on sale for $117, Bluefly):

As an alternative, what about this little denim shirtdress (on sale for $78, Revolve Clothing), paired with rich brown boots ($298, Madewell):

If it’s chilly out, I’d layer a striped tee beneath it  ($39, J. Crew — adore this “spiced olive” color) and throw on a fur vest (faux or not) — you can find them everywhere right now, from B.B. Dakota to Michael Kors :

Or how about  a fitted, frilled blazer ($138, Anthropologie) atop this slouchy little heather gray top ($54, MetroPark) and some skinnies:

Tuck into some equestrian-inspired flat boots ($89, Arden B), add some aviators ($139, Ray-Ban), and you’re set.

Alternately, how about a poncho-like camel sweater (Alexander Wang, $525, Shopbop):

(Ella Moss has a slightly more affordable alternative that I like as well — $220, Ella Moss.)  I’d layer it over some leggings or skinnies and tuck, as usual, into boots.  Other cozy options?  I loveeee the details on this J. Crew sweater — the buttons, the shawl collar — it’s all so yummy ($128, J. Crew):

I’ve also already mentioned this “cocoon shrug” but I can’t get it out of my mind (or off my shopping list) –$80, TopShop:

I kind of die over the idea of pairing it with a boxy-fit, striped tee ($26, Metropark), some dark-wash jeans, and a pair of cognac flats ($42, Shoes.com):

Alternately, pair a dusty-hued suede bomber (love the bomber jacket this season — $395, Madewell) with a cashmere tee dress (on sale for $72, TheOutnet) and some structured brown boots (do you not DIE over these Chloes? — $990, Bloomingdale’s):

Or how about a batwing sweater shrug ($114, Piper Lime) over a navy/white stripe tee-dress (Juicy, $160, Net-A-Porter):

Pair with flat brown boots and a corresponding brown leather tote.  Another thought: one of American Vintage’s lovely knit dresses in a camel color, beneath a nubby fair isle duster sweater ($650, Calypso):

This Hazel sweater provides a more affordable (though just as chic) alternative ($88, PiperLime) — I adore the little horn toggle buttons!

Of course, you can also go traditional-preppy by pairing a donegal/tweed blazer ($95, Shopbop) with a slim-fit collared oxford ($85, Ralph Lauren):

Wair atop a pair of skinny jeans and — my favorite — some Minnetonkas ($45, Zappos):

Now sit back, relax, and enjoy a cocktail while rooting on your team (go ‘hoos!)  — and if your man is looking for a little something for the day, point him in the direction of Southern Proper, full of bow ties and “frat caps” and so forth.  Love that they call their boxers “southern drawls” (get it?):

Art Class

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Work Wear on September 2, 2010 at 3:04 pm

I recently renewed my membership at The Phillips Collection art museum, and am positively dying to get over there to check out their more recent exhibitions.  Once upon a time, I worked as an intern in their development office and would frequently have the opportunity to stroll through the museum’s manageable proportions (they pride themselves on featuring art in an intimate setting — the museum used to be Mr. Duncan Phillips’ personal home).  The level of access that I once had seems like pure luxury nowadays.  At any rate, as I pored over their website (they post audio tours!), I found myself day-dreaming about abstract-print dresses and brush-stroke-patterned blouses.  As per usual, I cannot keep my thoughts fenced in: they inevitably roam back to the subject of fashion.  On what can only be labeled as a fashion high, I recalled the Elizabeth & James painted silk blouse that caught my eye a few weeks back ($295, Net-A-Porter):

I’d wear it either tucked into a high-waisted black skirt for work with some killer heels or atop a pair of skinny jeans with some flats ($130, Jildor) and an oversized tote (on sale for $311, Kate Spade):

On the wrist: two of these Kate Spade “Hand in Hand” bangles ($48 apiece, Kate Spade):

And then some classic gold twist enorma-studs ($25, Banana Republic):

I’m also obsessed with the idea of pairing a cute little blouse (either one of the washed silk ones I talked about yesterday — Equipment’s revival of its utility blouse has been epic thus far this season, for example — even Garance Dore mentioned it on her blog — $178, Revolve Clothing) with this “expressionist” print skirt ($37, Ruche):

All you’ll need are some epic heels (Casadei, on sale for $330, Farfetch) in a rich blue color and you’re set:

This splash-printed dress (also $37, also from Ruche) would be equally precious, especially when you’re looking to debut your new-for-fall flat boots ($159, Bloomingdale’s) and a rich-looking leather tote ($295, Brahmin):

While on the subject of dresses, this Juicy Couture printed number ($250, Net-A-Porter) caught my eye — it reminds me of one of Picasso’s fab canvases:

Cynthia Vincent’s Langley boot would be the perfect accompaniment ($395, Shop the Shoebox):

As would that Kate Spade “Camille” handbag I’ve been coveting this season ($495, Kate Spade):

For dressier affairs, I was head.over.heels for Lela Rose’s artful Fall 2010 collection (feminine yet futuristic — and a throwback to early 90s minimalism, which seems to be the next thing on the horizon after the recapture-the-excess-of-the-80s stylings we saw over the last few seasons) –

Lela Rose’s Fall 2010 Collection

I already want these Anna Wintour-esque sheath dresses from the collection (the first — $1,060, Net-A-Porter; the second — $1,895, Net-A-Porter):

Somebody was drawing inspiration from Jackson Pollock’s intense canvases…

Love.   I wish someone would make a dress out of the lower canvas — that fiery orange has my name written all over it, and against the staid camel/greige background?!  I mean.  On point for this season.

Other separates options?  How to die is this Parker blouse ($180, Nordstrom)?  I’m slowly converting to being a purple fan — I used to think it always looked tacky, but I like the richness nowadays:

I like the way it’s styled here, with skinny jeans — and I’d probably add on some black suede booties or maybe these sick House of Harlow OTK (over the knee) finds ($286, Boutique To You)?

We’ll continue with the Nicole Richie-ness by adding this House of Harlow necklace, which I snagged last season when it was improperly priced at Cusp (they marked it as $53, but everywhere else I’ve seen it, it’s been $75 or higher! — $75, ShopSheBoutique):

The geometric / slightly art-deco style of the necklace adds an interesting artful touch to the overall aesthetic.  I like.  The above boot-and-necklace couple would also look killer paired with some black tights and this Catherine Malandrino abstract print number ($450, Net-A-Porter):

I can also envision pairing them with some black tights and these killer suede booties by Boutique 9 (love the low cut of the front — $160, PiperLime):

(I took the plunge and ordered these Tory Burch variations on the suede bootie for this fall season — am eagerly waiting to debut them once the temp plummets.)

Just to be fair, I’ll include a warm weather option, as…it is still hitting 93 degrees here in the District, and despite my intense desire to invest in suede, capes, and dark wash skinny jeans, I’ve got to be realistic.  I am seriously loving this Rory Beca brushstroke print tank (on sale for $86, Rory Beca) — there I go again with the purple!

Adorable with white shorts or white jeans (Current/Elliott, $190, ChickDownTown – but check it out!  They’re offering 40% off anything!) and a fistful of bangles ($68 for set, PiperLime) paired with a chunky gold watch (FreeLook, $300, Shopbop):

Then all I want is a pair of simple, flat gold studs, like these go-with-everything Jennifer Meyers ($150, Shopbop):

For shoes, I’m pretty much dying over mocs at the moment, but for the warmer weather, these metallic Burberry t-straps are right on the money (on sale for $243, Zappos):

And, for the bag — you gotta go a little into left field to avoid looking too matchy-matchy.  I like this roomy Rebecca Minkoff tote in endlessly wearable gray — and this particular shade has hints of lilac in it that make it a natural mate for the purple in the Rory Beca tank ($495, Rebecca Minkoff):

A perfect art gallery-going get-up.  You could also swap in this much-less-expensive splatter-top blouse (only $19, Forever21) to get the look for less:

For a truly graphic look, pair with the white jeans above and those slouchy black suede booties I mentioned.  Now get out there and see some art — even if it’s fashion-centric!  I’m in love with design sketches like the one below, and my sister (the student at Parson’s in NY) is an incredibly talented sketch artist, so I’ll have to post some of her works in the next few weeks!

Laced Up

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on September 1, 2010 at 2:27 pm

I could not stop ogling over this month’s InStyle spread featuring Frida Pinto — how gorgeous is it?!  And how gorgeous is she?!

(Images from InStyle magazine)

It’s funny how things turn out, because I’ve been mentally curating a “lace” post for awhile, and these pics made me realize just how into the lace look I am.  My one caveat: lace can look cheap quickly, especially when the edges are unfinished/unhemmed and the fabric is too stiff.  That being said, I have a slew of pieces that have garnered my attention over the past few weeks, including this too-good-to-be-true See by Chloe dress, on sale for just $150 (!) at TheOutnet:

Adore the proportions and the prim cut, and swoon when I envision pairing it with some sparkling enorma-studs ($75, Bing Bang) and a pair of glossy black pumps (Rupert Sanderson, $590, Net-A-Porter):

I’m also loving the idea of a silky utility blouse ($325, Loeffler Randall) tucked into a trim black lace skirt ($70, TopShop):

I’d keep the jewelry light, with something like these vermeil bangles ($165 for 3, Margaret Elizabeth) and a pair of quartz studs (Anna Sheffield, $374, Shopbop), but the shoes fairly substantial (I’m loving the contrast between suede and lace at the moment — Boutique 9, $130, Shopbop) for the perfect blend of ethereal-with-edge:

Meanwhile, how darned fetching is this lovely little Manteleta Lace dress by Leifsdottir ($398, Leifsdottir)?

Um.  I’m obsessed.  Love the “eyelashes” along the bottom (I learned from wedding dress shopping that you call the little edges of lace that peek out over a hem “eyelashes”) and the interesting neckline.  Nude/champagne pumps are in order with this little feminine piece — something like this pair of Stuart Weitzmans would be perfect (on sale for $181, Farfetch):

And, to round it all out, a pair of sparkling earrings (Vintage Mariam Haskell, $548, House of Lavande) and a dreamy Lanvin clutch (loveeee the feather detail — $1,185, Kirna Zabete):

Lace needn’t be restricted to evening-wear, however.  I’m loving the idea of a somewhat cropped lace top, like this Lover brand piece ($455, Net-A-Porter) with a pair of white shorts (Pucci, $154, TheOutnet) and black strappy sandals (Belle by Sigerson Morrison, on sale for $97, La Garconne):

I like the idea of pairing it with a be-ribboned necklace, like this unexpected find from Talbot’s (on sale for $39, Talbots):

The same design principles apply for this boxy little almost-lace top by Paul&Joe (on sale for $176, MyTheresa) — I’d pair with some skinny jeans in black or a inky dark blue –

–and then top it off with a chunky necklace ($28, TopShop) and some eye-catching flats (Lanvin, $525, Shop Zoe):

Either of the above outfits would be adorable with this roomy, slightly edgy tote from Tory Burch ($595, Tory Burch):

I gotta say, though, that the cross-body bag has been BIG this season.  I’m still not so much into the look — it’s a bit too hipster-with-a-fedora for me (for some reason, the style reminds me of Urban Outfitters, which I like and where I often find nice separates in, but, taken on the whole, the Urban Outfitters aesthetic is sloppy and gritty in a way…which does not mesh well with my overall goal of stream-lined, polished dressing).  However, if I were so inclined, I’d probably snap up something like this Gorjana “Hudson” ($200, Gorjana):

Alternately, how adorable would this silky tank (Sykes, $279, Elizabeth Charles) be, tucked into this tidy little zippered white lace skirt (Paul & Joe, $590, Net-A-Porter):

I’d pair it with some nude pumps ($149, Corso Como) and a pearl-and-gold hooped necklace ($38, Anthropologie):

Or perhaps consider taking a note from the ballerina look by pairing a straight-forward tank ($35, J. Crew) with  a fuller lace skirt ($37.99, Modcloth) and a pair of ballet flats ($162, TheOutnet):

The only thing I’d add?  Some sparkling enorma-studs ($25, TopShop):

If you’re not sold on the lace separates look, just kick your typical LBD up a notch with a pair of killer lace-adorned pumps.  I’ve featured the Valentino bow-toes a number of time already, but how ridiculous are these Fendis (watch out — you may break your ankle in these puppies — $690, Nordstrom)?

Ladylike and edgy at the same time.  Love with a capital L.
