Goody Goody Gumdrops

In Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on July 30, 2010 at 4:45 pm

My fiance makes fun of me for my childish obsession with gummy candy.  I’m like a…kid in a candy shop?…when it comes to Haribo in particular.

There’s just something so festive and fantastic about a fistful of fruity, sweet candy — it just makes my day.  (I’m absolutely drooling at the moment just thinking about it because I have been trying to eat low-carb the past few weeks and it has been nothing short of painful.)  I’ll forgo the calories and instead creatively evoke the spirit of gumdrops, sprinkles, and all those sugar-filled treats we’re only meant to eat in moderation with some candy-colored wardrobe picks (no one said anything about dressing in moderation!)  The inspiration for this post (aside from a gnawing hunger for carbs) comes from Bounkit, my favorite jeweler  of the moment:

I saw the above be-gemmed necklace ($1,530, Bounkit) and instantly thought of gumdrops:

(In reality, it’s a masterpiece comprised of lemon quartz, fluorite, and carved rose quartz.  And I’m obsessed with it.)  You can lean towards a similar look with these jeweled sandals (Amedeo Canfora, $243, Pret A Beaute):

Wouldn’t they make you just the happiest little lady out there?  Lovely with a richly-colored Halston Heritage gown ($495, Net-A-Porter) for a slightly fantastical, luxe look –

Rachel Zoe would approve (anyone else amped about the premiere of her new season?!)  Alternately, this shorter Marc Jacobs shift dress features the same rich, gem-tone color and is just as darling (the gathering at the hip makes the dress — $313, TheOutnet):

I like the idea of unexpectedly dressing it down with the jeweled Amedeo Canfora t-straps above.  If you’re forgoing with Bounkit necklace, consider this gorgeous statement bracelet instead ($150, Bloomingdale’s):

I am literally obsessed with it.  Need that puppy.  Instantly added to my “I want” list.  Alternately, pair with either these candy-colored danglers ($75, Max & Chloe) or some enorma-rocks (appropriately titled “Gumdrop Studs” — $38, Kate Spade):

The studs would look darling with the little Marc Jacobs confection below as well, which has me drooling — it reminds me of sprinkles!  — $523, TheOutnet:

(P.S.  I may be the only customer over the age of five to order multicolored sprinkles on her fro-yo.  No judgment, please.)

This more low-key maxi by T-Bags is an equally sweet treat ($190, Revolve Clothing):

Reminds me of my favorite old-fashioned candy: Dots.  Yummy.

If the head-to-toe print is too much of a sugar rush for you, keep things simple(r) with your favorite jeans, this gumdrop necklace ($42, Anthropologie), and a pair of candy-colored jelly t-straps (French Connection, $25, Kurt Geiger):

Or maybe forgo the necklace and slip this lotsa-dots glam headband on (Jennifer Oeullette, on sale for $29, Barney’s):

Tie it all together with this bubble gum-pink Love Quotes scarf ($88, ChickDowntown):

And speaking of bubblegum, why not try these Dubble Bubble-shaded dresses — love that they are over-the-top girly and yet still sexy (the first: Derek Lam, on sale for $477, Shopbop; the second: Lotta Stenson, $615, Net-A-Porter; the third: Splendid, $115, Net-A-Porter):

Perhaps the latter could be paired with this fun gumball necklace ($24, Lori’s Shoes) for some serious sweet tooth indulgence:

For just a touch of sugar, toss this gumball-printed umbrella ($22, Kohls) in your tote or swap out your boring old wallet for this vibrant, Jolly Rancher red wallet (Comme Des Garcons, $250, Bloomingdale’s):

Ugh, just adore that BRIGHT red-orange color.  Perfect with an oversized gumball collar necklace (who else but Kenneth Jay Lane? — $140, Net-A-Porter) and Geranium Essie polish ($8, Essie Shop):

Well, now that I’ve sufficiently worked up an appetite, I’m pretty much out of steam.  Have a great weekend, and eat lots of carbs for me!

Shades of Greige

In Accessories, Beauty Products, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on July 29, 2010 at 2:11 pm

I’m sure you’ve heard about greige by now.  The gray-beige color blend earned fashionista-in-the-know status when it popped up as the nail color du jour on runway models at Chanel and Marc Jacobs (among other prominent designers) this past spring/summer season.

Greige nails on the Chanel runway

Greige nails on a Marc Jacobs model

The “It” nail varnish is Chanel’s “Particuliere” ($23, Saks), but this little Magpie is a firm believer in Essie products and insists that you can get the look for less with the “Jazz” color ($8, Essie Shop):

And if you’re either not sold on the color as a nail polish option or would like more of the color elsewhere, look no further.  Take as inspiration the fact that the hue was literally all.over.the.place this past season on the runway (and not just on nails!):

(From left to right: Rachel Comey, Shipley & Helmos, VPL, and Thakoon)

Because I think the color is particularly demure and ladylike — a touch warmer than gray, a hair cooler than blush — I think it makes an ideal for-the-office palette.  Consider how chic you’d look wearing this sleeveless blouse (Phi, $264, TheOutnet) with this greige pencil skirt by Valentino ($297, also TheOutnet):

Pair with oversized studs — I am into big florals like these Kenneth Jay Lanes at the moment ($95, Pret-A-Beaute) — and some ladylike taupe heels ($250, Kurt Geiger):

Toss your belongings in a ladylike bag of a slightly lighter greige hue (blending multiple shades of the same color family will leave you looking pulled together but not over-conceptualized or too matchy-matchy) — I love this Furla chain-strap bag ($595, Nordstrom):

And, if you’re like me and tend to have  a heavy hand when it comes to laying on the jewelry, consider adding these gold bangles with a greigey colored stone (Rebecca Norman, $240, Max and Chloe):

Or for a uptown-gal-around-town look, pair this to die for Armand Basi coat ($294, The Outnet) with a simple white tee (“The Artisan,” $29.50, Madewell) and some skinny jeans in a dark wash (Joe’s Jeans “Cigarette” fit in “Kennedy,” $158, ChickDownTown):

Top it all off with these tie-dyed taupe flats (what a find! — $24.90, Alloy) and a big, roomy tote (Kooba, $575, Bloomingdale’s):

The slight contrast in shades is rich in an unstudied chic way — I love it.  I’d probably throw on a gold, layered chain necklace like this Chrissy L piece ($150, Hazel and Harlow) or these almost-too-costumey-but-just-too-cool-to-pass-up earrings (Kenneth Jay Lane, $48, Pret-A-Beaute):

If it’s just too darn hot for a jacket and jeans (my gosh, I have got to stop daydreaming about cooler weather — it’s unbearably steamy here in the District and all I can think about is chillier climes), opt for a breezy patterned blouse in a fresh putty-and-white combo (Armand Basi, $112, The Outnet) with a pair of crisp white shorts (Pucci, $154, TheOutnet):

Slip into these Fendi thongs (on sale for $250, Pret-A-Beaute) and grab a slouchy clay-colored bag (Marc by Marc Jacobs, $330, Net-A-Porter):

If the thought of long sleeves has you sweating (certainly possible given the record-breaking heat this summer), swap out the Armand Basi blouse for this loose-fitting Loeffler Randall ladder-back tank ($225, 25Park):

And spruce things up with this mixed-media “marble” necklace (so versatile! — love the color combination! — $38, Anthropologie):

Take greige out for date night by pairing a simple black tank ($18.50, Madewell) with a flirty little putty-and-black printed skirt (another find — only $17.81, Forever21) and some wear-with-everything greige suede pumps (Jimmy Choo, $645, MyTheresa):

If it gets cool (here I go again) in the movie theater, slip this shawl-collar boyfriend blazer over your shoulders ($135, TopShop):

For something a bit more conservative (dinner with the in-laws?), I like the idea of an innocent white dress (Loeffler Randall, $242, 25Park) paired with bow-toed greige pumps (on sale for $63, Nine West):

Accent with this taupe-hued tie-on necklace ($38, Nordstrom) and a cozy cashmere wrap (Denis Colomb, $425, Barney’s):

I also like the idea of swapping out the heels for a pair of eye-catching flats for a retro look — these Aldo peeptoes caught my eye ($55, Aldo):

But if you’re bananas over the patent pumps, snap ‘em up and wear them (and re-wear them and re-wear them) in a million contexts: to work with a skirt suit, on a date with a brightly colored dress (orangey-red would look fab with them), or even to a formal event, paired with something like this silk mini by Rachel Gilbert($690, Net-A-Porter):

Are you as astounded (and fascinated?!) as I am with the endless versatility (and classiness!) of this new neutral?!  Who knew mushroom could be so fetching.

Apply the same color pairing principle exemplified above with the Loeffler Randall white dress to nearly anything in pristine white — some white jeans and a white blouse, or any LBW.  Just throw on some greige accents and voila: insta-chic.  A new way of remixing your wardrobe.  For daywear, I like the texture of both these Steve Madden snakeskin-styled flats ($139, Endless) and these Tory Burch Revas ($231, Shirise):

And this lightweight Alice & Olivia drapey cardigan could go with and over anything (on sale for $131, ChickDownTown):

As mentioned in a previous post, Anya Hindmarch has some gorgeous shades of greige out these days.  Both her “stone” and “light gray” colors are delightfully on point — and check out the luxe factor of this “Maeve” shoulder bag ($650, Anya Hindmarch):

C’est chic, ca!

Made in Spain

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on July 28, 2010 at 4:33 pm

Hands down, the best meal I have ever had in D.C. (and probably in my life, with the close competition of a leisurely, indulgent lunch with my parents at the Tour D’Argent in Paris — but come on.  Paris always wins.) was at Jose Andres’ Minibar in Cafe Atlantico.  Minibar is a six-seat restaurant within the larger Cafe Atlantico establishment that features two seatings a night and is notoriously difficult to get into (it took my fiance and I weeks — you have to call every morning at 10 a.m. for a reservation exactly a month out, and you almost never get through).  But the wait is well worth it — the food (30 mini-courses featuring playful takes on classics — their “Philly Cheese Steak” is a brioche roll piped with parmesan cream and wrapped in Waygu beef!) is phenomenal and interactive.  The chefs prepare each delicious morsel right before your eyes and instruct you in how to best enjoy it.  I was thoroughly entertained and engaged for the entirety of the seating.  But if you never make it to Minibar (it will set you back a pretty penny…yikes), no fear: Andres has a host of restaurants with more moderate pricing, all of which feature modern twists on Spanish/Mediterranean fare, and all of which are incredible.  My fiance and I love the guy’s work so much, we’re having our rehearsal dinner at one of them AND we happen to have attended a festive wine-tasting there last night!  Ole!

Jose Andres’ cookbook — buy it at Amazon for $23.10

Inspired by his creativity in the kitchen and last night’s tour of Spanish wines (Verdejo is the new sauv blanc in my book — and I’m a huge sauv blanc enthusiast), this post will be an imaginative trip to Spain, full of flamenco flourishes and salsa sexiness.  First: a perfectly festive, ready-to-dance, cha-cha-cha red dress by Valentino ($1,497, The Outnet):

All eyes will decidedly, most definitely be on you in this rojo number.  Complete the look with these kicky shoes ($131, Endless):

(Don’t you love how the embroidered accents are reminiscent of the piping on a traditional matador jacket?!)

Of course, some dramatic, shoulder-sweeping danglers are in order.  Why not “grab the bull by the horns” with these glam Kenneth Jay Lane earrings ($210, Net-A-Porter)?

And, for pure senorita flair, throw on this be-petaled clutch by Sondra Roberts ($99, Sondra Roberts):

(Psst.  Magpie Maven Olivia Palermo was spotted with one of Sondra Roberts’ floral clutches.  Makes you want it even more, doesn’t it?)  A Sonra Roberts clutch would also pair excellently with this off-the-shoulder Halston Heritage dress — my, Halston is the label of the moment! — on sale for $291, ChickDownTown:

Spruce things up with these Miguel Ases chandelier earrings ($350, Max and Chloe):

and perhaps these Kate Spade Lucia pumps ($275, Nordstrom):

Love how the flower resembles the carnation-behind-the-ear.  And if you think you might be cool in the evening breeze, I love this inexpensive little pom pom accented scarf ($7, Old Navy) — why not buy them in a variety of colors for a little pop?

If it’s significantly chilly (a friend and fellow blogger — her blog is exquisitely written! — lives in Argentina and continues to mention how freezing cold it is down there!), a bolero is perfectly appropriate for the occasion.  This Oscar de la Renta wonder is lovingly crocheted just for you ($504, The Outnet):

If you go for it, make sure you glam up the rest of your look to avoid the dowdy librarian vibe — it’s a tricky line to walk, but I think it can be done, especially if you keep your dress form-fitting and slightly va-va-voom.  D&G’s classic bustier dress (available every season in different iterations) would be an ideal option.  I snagged a periwinkle/blue shaded version for the honeymoon — it’s body conscious in all the right ways.

If you’re dressing for a special occasion, you might kick up the dazzle factor with this silk version of the bolero by See by Chloe ($164, The Outnet) — available not only in glossy black but a bombshell champagne/nude:

For something a bit less formal (yet a bit more daring), I like the idea of this “poncho” style dress by Jen’s Pirate Booty — “The Senorita.”  I’ve seen a billion and one celebrities photographed in it (everyone from Vanessa Hudgens to Alessandro D’Ambrosio) and it looks positively fetching in a “Oh this?  I just pulled this on because I had nothing else to wear but still look fabulous” kind of way.  Fetch your own for $115 at Madison L.A.:

I like the idea of wearing it with a loosely wrapped brown belt and some brown leather t-straps during the day, but, if you want to dress it up, simply pair with shoulder-grazing danglers, like these Kendra Scotts ($110, Max and Chloe) and a pair of fun sandals — whether flat (Paloma Barcelo, $180, Net-A-Porter) or high (Lanvin, on sale for $454, MyTheresa):

Another daywear alternative: this ruffly See by Chloe top ($157, The Outnet) with some white jeans and snappy shoes (Manolo Blahnik, $885, Nordstrom)

Alternately, pair with these Patricia Green rosette sandals ($82, Endless) and this I-want-it-bad Valentino bag ($2,400, Net-A-Porter):

Now, if you want to really put yourself out there, consider this salsa-ready number ($89, Modcloth), paired with these flower-embellished Valentino pumps ($775, Net-A-Porter):

Because the dress is so busy, keep add-ons to a minimum.  Just some simple studs (black or pearl will do — something like this Kate Spade pair — on sale for $29, Nordstrom) and a sleek black clutch ($245, Kate Spade):

Alternately, take a strapless LBD like this Catherine Malandrino ($294, Net-A-Porter) and jazz it up with some rosette pumps ($47.99, Modcloth):

And, if you dare, tuck a little rose hair adornment behind the ear.  Ban.do has some incredible versions up for grabs (and not all of them are as huge as the editorialized versions below — around $130 apiece, Ban.do):

If you’re still not convinced, just check out Chanel’s uber beautiful ad campaign from spring/summer 2010 for inspiration (I drool):

(Anyone else amused by the fact that the male model featured here, Baptiste Giabiconi, looks startlingly similar to Karl Lagerfeld himself?  Hm.  And YES, the female model in the bottom shot is the one and only Claudia Schiffer.  Hot.)

So throw your hat in the ring and test it out!  Viva Espana!

Easy Does It

In Accessories, Jewelry, Monograms, Shoes, Sundresses on July 26, 2010 at 3:18 pm

While I typically strive for a refined, polished look, there are those lazy weekend days that are made for comfortable, casual, and slightly “undone” styling.  I like the idea of throwing this striped shirt-dress on ($88, Madewell) and pairing it with some strappy brown sandals ($247.50, TheOutnet):

If you’re heading out on the town for errand-running, you might want to step it up a touch by cinching the waist with a skinny wraparound belt (I like “easy” aura of a loosely-wrapped belt).  Linea Pelle has great studded options, but I’m kind of in favor of this braided variation ($100, Linea Pelle):

Toss your belongings into an easy carry-all — I love the Linea Pelle “Dylan” tote below($395, Muse Ten):

I feel that this monogrammed Ginette NY necklace would totally complete the look.  They take 4-6 weeks to craft (you custom order them with your initials), and they are just the loveliest of keepsakes ($588, Eliza Page):

Perfect with this La Mer wrap watch (I snagged one of these last fall and get compliments on it all.the.time — it looks much pricier than it is! — $90, La Mer Collections):

Or, if it were cooler — ugh, miss the fall — slip the dress on with a pair of low wedge boots.  These Loeffler Randall “Mathilde” boots are my favorite — finally bit the bullet and bought a variation of the version below this past year ($695, Blue & Cream):

If you’re sporting the boots, I’d make the entire look a bit heavier by adding on some leather bracelets.  CCSkye has some appealing options, including this clasped version (on sale for $109, NYCIWear):

This easy-on striped dress would be another excellent option for low-keying it around on the weekend ($82, PixieMarket) — check out the back!

It’d look lovely in the fall/winter months thrown on over a pair of black tights and some mid-calf black boots ($105, Endless — also comes in a versatile “cognac” brown color).  Very Parisian chic.

(I apologize for the multiple references to fall — I guess I’m not-so-subliminally tired of the heat…)  Another SEASON appropriate pick — this breezy striped cap-sleeved, boxy blouse ($67.50,  Built by Wendy) with a pair of white shorts (Pucci, $154, TheOutnet):

I’d jazz it up with a clinky coin necklace (I’ve recently blogged about my obsession with Katie Costello’s coin necklaces, but this Ben Amun version is equally appealing — $300, Max and Chloe):

Alternately, layer on a couple of these initial necklaces (I am thinking it would be cute to have two: one with the first name initial, one with my NEW last name initial — $90 apiece, Laura James Jewelry):

Depending on my mood, I’d either slip into some moccasins (on sale for $79, J. Crew) or some strappy low-wedge sandals (on sale for $71, Zappos):

Another “right now” separates option: a denim shirt ($88, Madewell) and some white shorts ($135, Calypso):

Throw this vintage-looking scarf on for bonus points ($40, TopShop) — especially chic with these swoon-worthy Chloe woven leather sandals I’ve been eyeballing ($625, Net-A-Porter):

This “Bond Street” B&D tote would be the perfect accompaniment ($357, Bluefly):

I’m not usually huge into stud detailing, but the richness of the leather and the casualness of the overall look just works.  If you’d prefer the simplicity of a throw-on-and-go dress, how about this T By Alexander Wang racerback dress ($89, Kirna Zabete):

Very cool with these lace-up flat sandals ($78, Madewell) and this statement necklace by Mine ($45, Farfetch):

Or, if you’d rather go the scarf route, how amazing is this Gucci one ($283, Farfetch)?

Love the horse-bit detailing.  I’m also in love with this inexpensive could-double-as-a-cover-up-or-nightie dress from Gap (on super sale for only $14.99 in the navy stripe!):

Slip on a bold statement piece, like this chain link KJL necklace ($88, Shopbop) and these accented navy sandals ($49, Dillard’s)

Then tote your belongings around in this YSL script-side tote ($756, Bluefly):

Easy does it…

The World Is Your Oyster

In Cocktail Dresses, Home Decor, Jewelry, Shoes on July 23, 2010 at 6:03 pm

Sometimes you’ve got to take your cues from the natural world.  I had originally conceived of this post as an homage to the pearl (probably my favorite “gem” — and also my birthstone) but quickly found myself drawn to pairing the luminescent pearl with the craggy grays of the oyster shell.  It’s a genius combination — and effortlessly modern, especially since I’ve sensed a return to mid-90s minimalism in some recent big name fashion collections.  Working with shades of gray is an easy way to achieve the modern monochromatic remix of mid-90s simplicity.  And here, below, are a few of my favorite pieces.

To begin: a feminized oyster gray dress by Derek Lam ($845, TheOutnet):

Now here’s the trick: offsetting the matte gray with the glow of pearl accents.  Though I’m typically against wearing flats to events marked “cocktail” or more formal, these mother-of-pearl adorned Giuseppe Zanotti sandals (on sale for $695, Shop the Shoebox) impart just the right amount of irridescence:

Then all you need is a little ivory clutch, some pearl-accented enorma-studs (I adore the Kendra Scotts featured below — $70, Max and Chloe), and you’re good to go.  I wouldn’t clutter the look with much else — your shoes are about as much bling as you need.

For a dress with a little less flounce and feminity, amp up the pearl presence.  Consider, for example, the J. Crew “Gracie” dress in light pewter ($189, J. Crew):

It is, essentially, the perfect wedding guest (or bridesmaid!) dress.  Elegant, sophisticated, and still fresh thanks to the unexpected color.  You can easily make the look more radiant, more lively by adding pearl accents — perhaps these  dainty, vintage-like pearl drops ($68, J. Crew) and this cluster pearl bracelet ($88, Danielle Stevens):

Or if you are more an oversized-cocktail-ring kinda gal (this little Magpie is), check out this Lee Angel bauble ($75, Net-A-Porter):

Or maybe just let this unbelievable clamshell Judith Leiber bag do all the talking for you ($4,395, Neiman Marcus):

(Side note: is it wrong that I’m almost as excited to be carrying a classic Judith Leiber clutch to the reception of my wedding as I am to be wearing my gorgeous wedding gown?!  Eee!  Fashion overload.)  You can get the look for (much, much) less with this La Regale beaded clutch ($38, La Regale):

While we’re on the subject of the shell itself (did you know some people collect them?  They are gorgeous!) — I just have to feature my favorite little Kate Spade ring (on sale for $82, Nordstrom):

The perfect accent to this Halston Heritage v-neck mini ($325, Net-A-Porter) paired with these pearl-accented t-straps ($69.95, Anthropologie):

Just don’t forget to keep the gold of the ring company — add on some gold-rimmed shades or a gold-accented bag for good measure.  For work purposes, don’t you live for this pearl-beaded Marni top (a cool $823, MyTheresa)?

Pear with a white pencil skirt (I featured this D & G yesterday — $80, Farfetch) and these killer Yves St. Laurent pumps ($409, MyTheresa) for a little edge:

(If those are too avant garde for you, the lower-heeled Miu Mius or the patent Michael Kors pair I featured yesterday should work just fine.)  All you need is a pair of enormous pearl studs and you’re ready to go.  Or maybe pair this See by Chloe top ($108, TheOutnet – love the scalloping along the neckline) with some white skinnies and a pair of pearlescent flats (Vivienne Westwood, $115, My Wardrobe):

If you walk on the bolder side and like the chunky jewelry look, consider throwing this Hive & Honey pearl cluster stunner on top ($68, Piper Lime):

Or perhaps this Wendy Mink be-pearled bracelet ($160, Wendy Mink) or Marta Per ring, if you’d prefer an accent piece rather than a front-and-center statement ($95, Farfetch):

Store your pearl gems in this lovely mother of pearl dish ($30, Jayson Home and Garden) — placed oh-so-coordinatedly beside your mother of pearl lamp ($348, Gumps):

As for decorating yourself: another office-appropriate styling option?  This ASOS ruffle-front dress ($68, ASOS):

Love the glowing blush color of the skirt.  Offset with this clover necklace by Soixante Neuf ($147, Bluefly) and its matching ring ($117, also Bluefly):

Love.  If you’d prefer a heavier look to your jewelry, you could swap in this Kate Spade oyster bay necklace ($158, Kate Spade) and it’s matching bracelet ($116, Nordstrom):

The color palette works well for the evening — and is somewhat unexpected.  You’d certainly be the belle of the ball, standing out in a sea of black.  Consider, for example, this floor length La Perla gown (yes, they do ready-to-wear now! — $595, Net-A-Porter):

Love the beaded, plunging neckline.  And when you’re wearing it — the world is your oyster!

Orange Crush

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on July 22, 2010 at 8:25 pm

I’ve mentioned my obsession with flame-red-orange lately, and yesterday just confirmed my hunch that this color is just IT right now.  It’s bright like a neon but even more au courant than the day-glo-a-go-go style.  I had just splurged on these Anya Hindmarch shoes (can’t find them anywhere online — I bought them in person at my favorite boutique, Sassanova — so please excuse the poor picture quality):

And, though I’d paired them rather modestly (boringly?) with a straight-forward, high-waisted black pencil skirt (the one below is by J. Crew, $118) and a clementine-orange ruffle henley from J. Crew (on sale for $24.99, J.Crew) — I was stopped not once, not twice, but THREE different times on the street.

Most of the complements were not only directed toward my fab shoes — but to the color orange.  One lady-of-leisure at the nail salon exclaimed: “Orange!  What a great idea!”  Eureka — we’re on to something!  Below are my top picks for the BRIGHT orange trend of the moment.  I favor oranges on the bolder end of the spectrum, something verging into the reds, like this elegantly-draped Lela Rose skirt (on sale for $192, TheOutnet):

Glossy, jet-black accents are always an option, but I’m a fan of pairing it with grays and whites (not that I’ve been influenced by my sick Anya shoes or anything…) — I’m envisioning a white camisole beneath a trim charcoal cardi, paired with these patent Miu Mius ($495, Net-A-Porter):

Michael Kors has a more affordable, higher-heeled version on the market — equally enticing ($98, Lord and Taylor) — and they go delightfully well with the currently-on-my-dream-list (just beneath the Chloe Marcie bag) Caroline Mini by Tory Burch ($350, ToryBurch):

But back to my ORANGE crush.  How perfectly summery is this belted Milly number (on sale for $257, Revolve Clothing)?

This Gypsy05 mini gets the same look for less ($155, Gypsy05):

Both are reezy-chic at its best, especially with some t-straps or gladiators for an afternoon lunch.  I’ve mentioned in the past my affinity for these Madewell ankle-straps ($88, Madewell):

You’d look oh-so-chic when pairing them with the J. Crew Brompton bag ($298, J. Crew):

Very Rachel Bilson.  Alternately, dress it up with some neutral or white pumps (these Louboutin “Titi” pumps are…OMG — dying yet? — $725, Net-A-Porter) and these awesome enorma-studs (by the one and only Bounkit, $335):

They’d look just as lovely worn to work with this punchy Tucker blouse ($275, Farfetch) and a trim white pencil skirt (D&G, on sale for $80, Farfetch):

The above outfit would also look great with these Kendra Scott earrings ($70, Max and Chloe) — love how the deep raspberry color offsets the vibrancy of the orange:

If you want just a touch of orange deliciousness, how about swapping out your trusty old black or brown tote for a happy orange hued version (on sale for $44, Lori’s Shoes):

Or maybe this slightly offbeat zebra-print shopper is more your speed ($175, Kate Spade)?

Though I tend to be fairly practical with my arm candy (i.e. handbags) — usually opting for black or Louis Vuitton so that I don’t need to transfer my items on a daily basis — sometimes it’s just plain fun to center an outfit around an outlandishly bold bag.  Imagine wearing the above tote with an I-mean-business greige dress (the inverted pleats add interest — on mega sale for $319, Barney’s) and some staid, low-heeled Jackie O-esque pumps (on sale for $71, Endless):

And if you want to get really matchy-matchy (Momma Magpie is smiling approvingly), try these colorblocked orange-on-greige peeptoes ($67, Endless):

Another fashion-forward work option?  This to-die-for Halston shirtdress ($698, TheOutnet) — it is money.  I’m particularly drawn to it because it captures that 70s glam aesthetic I blogged about a few days back (Halston pretty much invented the look):

It’d look great with any of the shoe options above, though I think it could also look interesting (and could also POP a bit more) with some blush-colored pumps, like these steeply-discounted Zanottis ($280, Farfetch):

If you’re a bold gal, ready to take on the FLAME color, how darn cute is this Marni lace-up-back mini dress (on sale for $398, Marni):

The black grosgrain tie in the back pretty much requires you to throw on these glossy black Louboutins — a classic ($595, Net-A-Porter):

I like the idea of finishing the look with these elegant pearl-and-ribbon earrings by Lanvin ($920, Net-A-Porter) and Lanvin’s “Happy” MM bag ($1,760, Barney’s):

I like how the hallmark Lanvin bows “tie in” (pun intended) with the dress’s lace-up ribbon back — but a black patent clutch will do just fine as well.  Another fashion-forward and fun option: this tangerine-hued romper ($49, Roxy):

(If you dare.)  I like the idea of toning it down a bit with the Cyprus sandals by Madewell featured above.  Other fun daywear options?  This precious and oh-my-God-affordable floral top ($24.90, Heritage1981) and See by Chloe mango-colored shorts ($70, TheOutnet):

How cute when worn with the “Titi” Louboutins referenced above for a glammed up lunch outfit or just some classic white Jack Rogers?

Or maybe this uber-bright Vivienne Westwood blouse is more your style ($276, TheOutnet), worn with your favorite white skinnies and some fire engine red-accented wedges (Kate Spade, $129, Endless):

Or, for comfort purposes, these tribal detailed Marc Jacobs mocs (I love the moc style — $166, Farfetch):

Other little orange goodies to tuck away for a rainy day?  (Orange just makes you feel happy.  Period.)  I like a bold, sporty, just-for-fun watch — this Michael Kors version caught my eye ($195, ShopBop), but so did this jelly-banded TKO watch (also comes in a delightful neon pink — $125, TKOWatches):

It reminds me of these pep-me-up jelly Tory Burch flats (on sale for $57, FootCandyShoes):

For beachwear, how about this “wild thing” Melissa Odabash bikini ($82, TheOutnet):

Alternately, this solid “flame” colored two-piece caught my eye ($40 for top, $38 for bottom, Zappos):

Ideal with an easy-on white cover-up ($250, La Garconne) and these neon K. Jacques flip flops ($96, My Theresa):

I just gotta conclude with the cheesiest of all cheeseball statements: ORANGE you inspired by today’s post?!

Gold Rush

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Home Decor, Jewelry, Shoes on July 21, 2010 at 4:09 pm

It’s probably fairly obvious that I’m obsessed with gold accents.  I feel like I’m constantly recommending a “hard cased gold clutch” and “oversized gold jewelry” — it’s just very now and it goes so well with my favored looks: the nautical, the neon, the glitzy, and — yes — the 1970s disco scene.  So this post is positively gilded: get ready for some 24 karat, let’s-go-for-the-gold objets d’art.  To begin: the classic Alice & Olivia Sequin mini (on sale for $346, ChickDownTown):

This dress has been around a few seasons and it ain’t going anywhere fast.  Perfect for Vegas, bachelorette parties, New Year’s Eve, and — well — anytime you need a little gold rush.  For mega-watt shine (and telling taste), pair with these sculptural Moschino heels (on sale for $408, Zappos):

There’s something fetchingly futuristic about them that I can’t quite put my finger on — but at 50% off, what a treasure!  Seal the deal with this hard-cased clutch (Menbur, $144, Endless) and a pair of faux rocks ($40, Max & Chloe):

You’ll look like a million bucks.  Of course, you don’t need to be as blinged out.  There’s a slightly more understated, less-Vegas-appropriate side to the gold tone.  It begins with this lovely Kors sheath ($663, The Outnet):

Pure class, especially with these bow-toe Kate Spade pumps ($285, Zappos):

It’s the perfect hostess getup, in my opinion — chic, slightly retro, and pulled together.  (I always find that a tidy, uptown, “Charlotte York”-inspired aesthetic is perfect for entertaining guests — you’ll feel on top of things, even if you’re running around at the last minute.)  Come to think of it — gilded serve-wear might be the Midas touch for effortless entertaining.  Imagine serving hors d’oeuvres on this chic platter ($145, Vivre):

Truth be told, however, I’ve snapped up a collection of inexpensive gold lacquer chargers over the years ($4 apiece, Pier1) and they always look festive and more expensive than they appear:

I use them to creatively arrange cheese plates, rows of appetizers, and even glasses of champagne.  And serving champagne has never been as regal as it will be with these flutes ($128, Eden & Eden):

Back to decorating yourself, however: this Mad Men-inspired dress has all the panache you’d need for an evening of hosting ($123, ModCloth):

I’d pair with these similarly textured Kate Spade “Carlies” ($298, Kate Spade):

Those puppies would look equally lovely with this metallic-threaded lurex dress by Chloe (why does Hannah MacGibbon do everything right?  Her stuff is exquisite but delightfully wearable — $1,795, The Outnet):

Throw on this chunky gold statement necklace to “toughen” things up (Kenneth Jay Lane, on sale for $89, Piper Lime):

Perfect for a lady’s lunch, a meeting in the boardroom, or slightly-on-the-conservative side cocktail hour — especially when you’re keeping time with this expensive-looking — but affordable! — watch (ugh, love it, need it, want it — on sale for $76.90, Nordstrom):

And if you’re the hostess, you might consider arranging some buds in this gorgeous vase (matches your servewear above — bonus points! — $895, Vivre) and serving post-prandial coffee or tea in this  opulent teapot ($42, Jayson Home and Garden):

Don’t forget to fluff these fit-for-the-queen gold thread pillows ($175, Jayson Home and Garden):

Very neo-Versailles…though if you want to go the old school Napoleon route, imagine seating your guests on these over-the-top chairs ($515, Ivory Pearl Interiors):

Pretty luxe.  If you decide, after your guests leave, that you need to head out and let loose with cocktails and into-the-night dancing, slip into these “I’m ready to disco”  Louboutin heels ($1,195, Net-A-Porter) and throw your essentials into this to.die.for Amanda Pearl clutch ($1,595, Amanda Pearl):

Don’t forget to slip out of the collar necklace and opt for these swinging gold danglers instead (Roberto Cavalli, $615, Net-A-Porter):

Or overhaul the sheath altogether and opt for this glitzy-glam Pucci mini ($1,336, TheOutnet) instead:

Golden goddess material –  especially with some dramatic faux cils (Shu Uemura’s are supposedly the best — $20 a pop) and these kicky, dance-ready shoes (appropriately titled “Fire It Up” shoes — $49, Lori’s Shoes):

Don’t forget the perfect little hard-cased minaudiere (DVF, $295, Diani Boutique) and — just for fun — this bow ring by the one-and-only Kate Spade ($75, Nordstrom):

For those of us with an evening schedule that is less-than-packed with shimmery-little-dress occasions, don’t fret!  There are plenty of awesome ways of glamming up your daywear routine.  These two wear-everywhere totes are as good as gold: the first is by Tory Burch ($325, Foot Candy Shoes) and the second is by Kate Spade ($585, Kate Spade):

The lattice-work of the floral bag above reminds me of these perforated gold flats by Ciao Bella I’ve looked longingly at for awhile now (on sale for $59, PiperLime):

Alternately, glam yourself up regardless of your daytime activities with these gold-toned shorts (Schumacher, on sale for $152, MyTheresa):

Alternately, for a more ladylike look, consider this full-skirted Elizabeth & James wonder ($382, My Theresa):

With a prim, fitted white button down and the KJL statement piece above, you’ll be setting the gold standard!

The Halston Heritage

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on July 20, 2010 at 4:08 pm

I spent a solid couple of hours last night poring over old pictures of Bianca Jagger — the muse of 70s “It” designer Halston — and deciding that I need to tweak my personal styling tendencies to better align myself with her 70s glam look.

Jagger, arriving at her Studio 54 birthday soiree on horseback

Jagger and Halston

I’m instantly coveting breezy, floor-length caftans; silky bow-neck blouses; menswear-inspired trousers; off-the-shoulder tops and evening dresses.  Luckily, the fashion world seems prepared to give me what I want — likely thanks to Rachel Zoe, heir to the 1970s jet set aesthetic.

First on my lust list: to-the-floor maxi dresses in distinctly 70s prints and colors.  I don’t think it gets any more delightfully retro than this Tucker by Gaby Basora georgette number ($396, Tucker Web Shop):

If the floor-length dress seems a bit much for testing the trend, transfer the style to a blouse.  I’m bananas about the Tucker blouse, but this Armand Basi is a wicked find (on sale for $112, The Outnet):

Pair with enorma-shades a la Rachel Zoe — she favors these Balenciagas ($395, Balenciaga) — and some oh-so-70s stacked brown suede wedges (Michael Kors, on STEEP sale for $48, ChickDownTown):

Zoe seems to think that the bell bottom look is back in, but — not sure I’m ready to take that plunge.  I’ll stick to the chic, Halston-inspired 70s maxi dress, thank you.  Rachel Pally has come out with a whole range of caftans and floor-length dresses very much in the Halston tradition:

On sale for $163, Shopbop

($268, Shopbop)

The creamy milk color of the version above is perfect for capturing the laid-back chic that defined the post-hippie era.  Glam it up in Studio 54 style with a lariat necklace ($88, Loren Hope Designs) and a hard-cased clutch (Menbur, $134, Endless):

If you’re ready and able to spend a pretty penny, slip into this Missoni caftan — it’s right on the money ($1,185, Net-A-Porter):

Zoe would probably pair it with her Cartier panther ring (price upon request, Cartier) and a huge fur vest (M Missoni, on sale for $2,100, StyleBop):

You can achieve a similarly fierce look for less with this nOir cocktail ring — $207, ShopSHEBoutique — and this Juicy faux fur jacket — on super sale for $98, Ssense:

As Zoe would put it: D.I.E.

Of course, Halston’s recent reincarnation line — Halston Heritage — features a host of throwback styles, including this orange Plisse Double Layer maxi ($895, Net-A-P0rter) and this jet black satin jersey gown ($418, Singer22):

And if you’re really ready to go the disco route, check out this ridiculous Marc Jacobs “liquid” dress (on SERIOUS sale for $132, ChickDownTown):

Not for the faint of heart.  I’d be more inclined towards these Camilla Frank minis — they still capture the Studio 54 vibe without risking quite as much ($660, Camilla Frank):

(Frank, an up-and-coming Aussie designer, also has a number of punchy caftans in her new collection, and Rachel Zoe is bananas about them.  Check them out.)  Halston Heritage features some briefer dresses as well if you’re not sure about the full-length styles above — you’ve likely seen the one-and-only SJP in them over the past few months (she moonlights as a creative director for the line)!  This electric blue one has been all the rage this season ($435, Singer22), although I’m a little intimidated by the combination of the bold color, the metallic threading, and the fashion-forward shape:

This Isabella Oliver dress seems much more manageable (and comes in easier-to-wear black as well — on sale for $204, Isabella Oliver):

If you’re beginning to think that this little Fashion Magpie may have gone off the deep end with the bold (risky!) looks above, don’t fret: I’m just playing around in the space, wondering how to make things work a la Rachel Zoe.  I’m much more likely to keep things a bit more modest by testing out some less daring — though equally glam — daywear looks.  I’m loving, for example, the idea of an updated 70s look centered around this unscary See By Chloe bow-neck blouse (on sale for $106, ChickDownTown), some lived-in, lighter-washed jeans (pick your flavor), and this pair of killer Belle by Sigerson Morrison lattice espadrilles ($240, Ssense):

They’d pair well with the Marcie bag by Chloe (bag of my dreams — $1,790, Net-A-Porter), or, in true 70s style, this cross-body Madewell bag ($128, Madewell):

And if you dare…this ridiculous beaver fur jacket by Revillon to up the ante (on sale for $1,942, MyTheresa):

Chloe was all over this 70s-cool look on the runways (I’m obsessed) — check out these Jagger-esque separates:

I mean, the season could very well have been straight from Lauren Hutton’s closet!  (Lauren Hutton was another of the 1970s icons — you may remember her face from some recent J. Crew modeling she did.)  Love.  To achieve a similar aesthetic, I’m absolutely ogling over this Erin Fetherston “peignor” blouse ($625, Ssense):

For fall, go ahead and pair with wider leg tweed or textured taupe pants (Ann Taylor Loft and Ralph Lauren have good options in this department) — or, if you’re ready to take a plunge — go the Bianca Jagger route with a full on white suit (I’m in love with the Armand Basi blazer below — $218, TheOutnet):

Under the Awning

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Home Decor, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, Work Wear on July 19, 2010 at 5:19 pm

Lately I’ve been daydreaming about buying a house in the traditional Virginia style — a mini Monticello if you will.  This is probably because I attended UVA (and consequently have the requisite fascination with all things Jeffersonian), grew up spending long weekends down at the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, VA, and spent the weekend of my proposal at the classic Virginia getaway Keswick Hall.  I’m particularly drawn to awning stripes — so graphic and vintage at the same time — which are all over the place in classic Virginia resorts, showing up in the form of wallpaper, upholstery, bedding, and — yes — awnings themselves.

The Great Hall at the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, VA

A Suite at the Homestead

In particular, I’m coveting a lovely little garden out back with this gorgeous wrought-iron backyard seating ($1,450, Garden House Decor):

The striped pillows make the look — and you can get the same look inside by jazzing up your couch with these awning stripe pillows from Restoration Hardware (on sale for $15.99 apiece):

And even those these awning striped lamps are made for kiddie rooms, I just may have to snap up a set to spruce up my soon-to-be-nautical-inspired living room in the newlywed nest ($62, Cheeky Little Munchkins):

The items above remind me of my absolute favorite tote of the summer, to be worn with the same laid-back, easy-breeziness that I affiliate with traditional Virginia style: The Tory Burch Stripe Canvas Tote (on sale for $136, Tory Burch):

Perfect for toting to the beach for a day in the sun, especially with a simple white or navy bikini — these days, I’m obsessed with the simple, flattering stylings of NYC-based Palma Swimwear ($65 for top and $65 for bottom, Palma NYC):

Of course, if you’re willing to take the bold stripe look a few steps forward, try this French Connection one-piece on for size ($76, Bluefly):

Perfect with an easy-on white caftan and a big canvas tote — and so is this two-piece version from TopShop ($50):

This pricier Undrest version is beyond precious…if only I hadn’t already sprung for five new bikinis for the honeymoon, I might make an exception and snap these separates up ($85 for top, $90 for bottom — Undrest):

Love the ruffling around the edges and the almost-bow shape of the bandeau.  Strike a similar (striped) pose by pairing a simple white sundress with these Burberry striped espadrilles ($395, Zappos):

Or really go for the bold with this ribbon striped Alice & Olivia frock ($396, Alice and Olivia):

For something a bit less formal, I’m absolutely bananas over the interesting open-shoulder design of this Ella Moss “Liberty Dress” (also love the navy-white contrast — $162, Revolve Clothing):

Love it with this gilded clover necklace by Tory Burch ($195) –

Although I got my clover necklace for far less from Stella & Dot and wear it constantly (it’s long enough to loop around your neck twice for a different look — $59, Stella & Dot):

As an alternative to the Ella Moss dress above, this ALC striped number is perfectly on point for this season ($295, Barney’s):

Layer on this “clover beaded” necklace ($145, Tory Burch) and pair with these perfectly summery Tila March sandals (around $220, Tila March)

Or maybe this slightly more offbeat Bernhard Willhelm cowl neck striped dress is more your speed — still getting the awning stripe vibe, but without the crisp and potentially stuffy preppiness of it all ($768, Farfetch):

As we inch towards fall, I’m thinking it’d be the perfect transition piece — just throw on some opaque black tights and a greige leather hand bag.  Anya Hindmarch has some unbelievable versions in the perfect greige color out — I saw her “Leland” style at Sassanova last weekend (one below on the left) and drooled over its soft leather perfection for a good ten minutes:

Before I get ahead of myself by leaping full force into fashion for fall (it’s far too hot outside to think seriously about autumn), let’s consider some additional summer separates featuring what I’ve dubbed the Virginia Stripe.  How perfect, for example, is this “Cricket Match Skirt” from ModCloth ($41.99):

Adore the bow — feminine without being TOO fussy.  I’d wear it with a simple black tank and some black flats for work (Lanvin’s classic ballerinas are on my lust list — $495, Net-A-Porter):

Pair with simple pearl studs for easy elegance.  Or wear the skirt above with these killer Kate Spade pumps — ay yay yay, I want these so badly.  The chiffon-esque fabrication leaves me drooling, while the stripes make for a perfect match with the skirt ($325, Nordstrom):

Or just punch up an otherwise straightforward outfit (I wear a breezy white dress once or twice a week, switching in bold statement jewelry to make it fresh) with these striped baubles from Kate Spade ($45 for earrings, $65 for bracelet — Nordstrom):

And though I’m admittedly not a fan of Tom’s footwear (sorry — love the cause, bud), I lingered over these Roxy Tortola shoes for awhile, captivated by their simple charm (on sale for $16.99, Roxy):

I think you might be able to pull them off if you keep the rest of your getup extremely tailored and borderline over-the-top preppy (I’m imagining crisp white shorts, an oxford, oversized pearls, and a structured Kate Spade tote).  And until I can afford to outfit my home a la Sara Gilbane (interior decorator extraordinaire — see below for pictures), I’ll just have to stick to awning striped accents and fashion pieces.

(Hopefully won’t be needing the nursery for awhile, but adore it nonetheless).  In the meantime, I can still show off with these awning striped, letterpressed calling cards ($171, Crane’s):

Striped perfection!

Scalloping Along

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on July 15, 2010 at 3:06 pm

I’m in love with scalloped edges.  I can’t divulge the details now, but I’ve used the scalloped edge in several ways at my upcoming wedding (I promise to dish after August 7 but want to leave all of that a SURPRISE for now).  My interest in the accent is not newfound, however — I’ve had and dearly loved my Matouk “Scallops” bedding for three years now!

This feminine detailing has defined a number of Chloe’s seasons over the past few years (thanks to head designer Hannah MacGibbon, Chloe has rapidly become one of my favorite fashion lines), and I just can’t get enough of it.

Soon-to-earn-Magpie-Maven-status Kate Bosworth sported the Chloe runway look and just killed in it:

(So did Chloe Sevigny, but she scares me.)  See by Chloe (diffusion line) came out with a whole series of scalloped shorts, some of which are still available on Farfetch, on sale for $181 and at La Garconne, on sale for $206:

I’m not bananas about the silky sleepwear vibe several versions (including the pair above) flaunt, so I’ll pass on them (power to you if you can make them work!) — but check out these fashion-forward trouser shorts from Queen’s Wardrobe ($72, Queen’s Wardrobe):

The editorial style of the shop’s photos leave me absolutely giddy.  I had to do a double take when I saw the price — they honestly look much higher end!  I feel as though you’d be channeling a 70s-era Olivia Palermo in them.  Love.  If you’re not so much into the shorts look, how precious is this little skirt from Urban Outfitters ($59)?!

It also comes in crisp navy and versatile white (white could be the perfect option when worn with a blush-toned blouse if you’re trying to channel Chloe’s runway look).  If you’re like me, however, and often opt for the easy-on, all-in-one DRESS above all else, how much do you covet this Lilly “Pearce” frock ($278, Lilly Pulitzer)?

Ah!  Just seeing it makes me want to make an impulse purchase — perhaps I need it for one of the events leading up to the wedding?!  (No.  I already have 4 white dresses set aside for various pre-wedding festivities.  Drat.)  For something a bit bolder in print, I’m loving this Calypso Mendosa dress (on sale for $99, Calypso):

I’m thinking it would be spot-on with these blue-stone Mystique ankle-strap sandals ($155, Mystique Shop) and this herringbone-patterned Magid brand tote (the style is so unexpected — $70, Endless):

Another bordering-on-boho look incorporating the fetching scalloped edge?  This Vanessa Bruno Athe white silk dress (on sale for $291, La Garconne):

(I’m Very — capital V — into Vanessa Bruno’s stuff at the moment.  She defines chic Parisian streetwear.  I just snapped up her awesome lavender dress at 55% off at TheOutnet and can’t wait to wear it to work with a big pearl statement necklace and my ivory Louboutin pumps — or just as readily with a pair of gold t-straps and an oversized tote for shopping.  Hurry, mail!)  I’d pair the above dress with these street-cool gladiators from Mango (on sale for $39) and this killer Foley + Corinna bag ($395, Bloomingdale’s) for the perfect Saturday shopping getup:

And if you’re of the minimalist school of fashion decision-making (…which I doubt you are if you’re reading my often over-the-top posts), consider adding the above accessories to this unfussy scallop-edged See by Chloe dress (on sale for $252, Otte NY):

With this dress, I think an eye-catching necklace would nicely break up the borderline severity of the torso design.  I’m head over heels for clinking coin necklaces after seeing them all over the place in a spread for Lucky magazine, and this vintage find from Brook & Lyn boutique is right on the money ($85, Brook and Lyn):

Jewelry designer Katie Costello also has some cool little coin-accented trinkets, like this necklace (on sale for $44) and this bracelet ($77):

While we’re on the subject of metallic accessories, how about these scalloped Tapeet flats (on sale for $214, Zappos)?  I dig them, especially with an all-black ensemble (black skinny pants and a trim black blouse) for a Parisian-chic look.

Or, for just a HINT of scalloping, these dainty Gorjana earrings ($50, Gorjana):

I’m equally bowled over by this darling little Anya Hindmarch pouch, which reads: “Manicure Money” ($155, Diani Boutique).  This is truly something I need for myself, as I get weekly (occasionally bi-weekly) manicures…sigh.

And, for a dose of pure fantasy, let’s ogle over two of my favorite pictures from Cherry Blossom Girl’s unbelievable shoot for the designer Alexandra Grecco, whose line features quite a bit of scalloping:

Swooning yet?  In a similar vein of thought, we’ll conclude this post with a fanciful scallop-edged blouse from the Designer Remix Collection at Farfetch (on sale for $181):

I like the idea of pairing it with these Alice & Olivia “butterfly” shorts (also have a kind of “scallop” to them — $188, Shopbop):

And then I’d keep things totally neutral and unfussy on the bottom — maybe just these Enzo Angiolini blush-colored peep toes ($45, Zappos):

(Label lust-worthy Giuseppe Zanotti also has some kickin blush colored pumps for $595 — check them out at Endless.)  I’d mix it up with these funky-cool Lizzie Fortunato earrings ($108, Shopbop):

The above earrings would look equally smashing with this silky peach dress by Ali Ro (on sale for $195, Neiman Marcus):

But — because we aren’t all BRIGHT color people — I’ll include a perfect LBD as the closer: a Catherine Malandrino at an unbeatable price (on sale for $294, The Outnet):

Ooh la la!

Just Because.

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Beauty Products, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on July 14, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Sometimes you just need a little pick-me-up — a little pop of color, a little indulgence — to get you through the day.  (And often those “sometimes” fall on Wednesdays, the toughest day of the week in my opinion.)  All I can say is that when I saw this photo of a Kate Spade – Cheree Berry collaboration card posted on The NeoTraditionalist’s blog last week or the week before, it was enough to perk me up for the remainder of the afternoon:

Inspired, this post is devoted to pure whimsy.  These are the items on my current lust list that may just have to be impulse purchases on otherwise drab (Wednes-)days in the future.  First up: this porcelain-inspired blue-and-white print dress by “Built by Wendy” (currently on sale for $135, Built By Wendy):

Funny that this dress caught my attention — I learned after that Chinese couples traditionally receive “happiness pots” in the conventional blue-and-white porcelain pattern (like the version below — $59, Wisteria) just before their wedding!

But back to the dress: aside from potentially signifying happiness in marriage, its slightly boho aesthetic coupled with the bracelet sleeves make it a slam dunk.  Perfect with a lived-in belt, whether thrown on over a bikini or worn to work on a steamy summer-in-the-District day.  And speaking of bikinis — I am absolutely bananas over a new swimwear discovery: Palma-NYC.  Absolutely love their BRIGHT pinks, corals, and reds and had to snap up a set with the honeymoon in sight.  (You’ll have to order via email — info@palma-nyc.com.  The sisters that run the operation are absolutely darling — a delight to work with!)

I ordered the above “bandeau” style top (adore the slightly nautical style the rope tie introduces) with the classic “palma” bottom (each piece is $65) in a caliente red color.  Can’t wait for it to arrive in the mail!  While on the subject of vacation-wear, however, I’ve got to gush over another recent lust-list entry: these cashmere striped wraps from Seaton Surf ($348 apiece).  Love the idea of snuggling into one in the cooler evening air:

I’m super obsessed with coral/orange at the moment (hence my recent Essie Geranium kick), so the orange variation above speaks to me in particular.  This may explain why I’ve been routinely wearing my Tarte cheek stain in “Tipsy” (a glowing apricot-coral color, $30, Sephora)…

and it may also explain why I’ve been placing these coral-orange Louboutins in my shopping bag at FootCandyShoes (on sale for an almost affordable $339)…but then withdrawing at the last minute  (too much extravagance the past few months…):

Have you ever seen a more perfect shoe?!  The proportions, the glossy, candy-colored coating?  Die.  I would spruce up an otherwise all black work outfit with these puppies or slip into them with a fun LBD for a night out with the girls…but before I go too far off the deep end with my coral-color obsession, let’s return to the more general subject of footwear I (nearly) can’t live without.  And the designer Tila March’s merchandise certainly falls into this category.  I love their rope sandals above all else (around $200; comes in multiple colors, but you’ll have to contact them to find a retailer that carries them!).  Aren’t they the perfect fun-in-the-sun accompaniments to a splashy bikini?

I’m equally as nuts over their “Papillon” style, which I think would look adorable with a freshly painted pedicure (and yellow is so unexpected!):

Die.  (The above sandals also come in a super-cool and tres of-the-moment “greige” patent color that would be right on trend for this summer’s neutral kick.)  Also die over this easy-on, honeymoon-ready Madame A Paris dress, now on sale for only $99 at Calypso — just perfect for lounging around on the beach, cocktail in hand:

Maybe splash it up with these simple Tory Burch Thora sandals in (you guessed it) sunny tangerine — I just can’t get over my obsession with orange at the moment.  (On sale for $69 at FootCandyShoes.  I’ll admit that I snagged a pair once they dropped in price and then stowed them securely for the honeymoon.  I feel as though unpacking my suitcase will be like Christmas — so many new goodies!)

Ah, the honeymoon — I just can’t get it off the brain.  All I want is to pack up and ship out…especially if I’m able to afford this chic luggage ($1,885-$2,335, The Conran Shop):

…but if you can’t afford those globe-trotting classics, let this excellently styled print from Simply Hue take you places ($22, Simply Hue on Etsy):

I’m especially looking forward to debuting my new married name — such a strange concept, but so exciting!  In eager anticipation, I went ahead and ordered one of these hand-crafted hangers featuring my soon-to-be new name as a Mrs. ($25, Lila Frances on Etsy):

Perfect for hanging my wedding dress.  Love any way of customizing the Big Day — and beyond.  I’m preparing to order a set of these precious little personalized note cards from Rifle Paper Co — they will actually draw a sketch in your likeness if you submit a photo of yourself — how adorable?!  I can’t wait to get a little cartoon version of my (magpie) self drawn up above my new MRS. name!

Other customized goodies that have caught my little magpie eye recently?  These Ex Libris sets (bookplates) for my library.  I own hundreds of books and have them stacked everywhere — under my bed in my current apartment, in the basement and garage of my parents’ house, on my shelves, on my parents’ shelves…ay.  I would love a way of ordering them all or at least stamping those strays currently residing elsewhere as my own.  And how perfect are these engraved versions from ThornWillow ($28 for 16, ThornWillow)?  Love the old Latinate version — so old-school.

Now, it wouldn’t be a Magpie post without some oversized jewelry of some kind or another, so let’s hop to it.  You know how I’ve been pushing the mega-bling, oversized-crystal look lately (thanks, in part to some awesome vintage Kenneth Jay Lane finds I’ve scored on eBay and to J. Crew’s kindred styling in this season’s jewelry)?  I’ve found some awesome (and affordable) baubles at Henri Bendel that will just knock you dead.  Love these slightly vintage-looking sets of danglers (the first — $128, Henri Bendel; the second — $138, also Henri Bendel, and comes in several stone colors) for a BNO (big night out):

I feel like I’m having a glam time just looking at them.  Meanwhile, these Ylang23 Vintage stunners have been on my mind for long enough — into the eShopping bag they’ve gone, and onto my credit card they will go ($120, Ylang23):

They remind me of my favorite flower in the universe — the peony:

(Photos courtesy of A Creative Mint)

And while I’m typically more of a costume jewelry (with oversized everything) I will occasionally stumble across a delicate little wisp of a thing and find it totally arresting.  This Kiel Mead “Forget Me Not” ring is so disarmingly sweet, I just can’t get over it ($200, Kiel Mead):

But the REAL indulgence — the MAJOR item on my wish list?  A puppy.  My sister just bought her own (a golden retriever) and it is the most precious thing I’ve ever seen in my life.  My fiance and I have talked about getting a dog together for some time now, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we can get ourselves together and buy one this year.  (We’ll see!)  We’ll be getting a French Bulldog and naming her Lady Brett, after my favorite character in all of literature (she was the impossible wanderlust of a woman from Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, perhaps my favorite book in existence — certainly one of the few I’ve read and re-read with consistent eagerness and investment…just wait til the dagger of a line she delivers to Jake at the very conclusion!)

Dying?  In the meantime, I’ll just satisfy myself (ha) with this quirky little sketch by PopPopPortraits ($10, PopPopPortraits on Etsy):

Just because.

I have an inexplicable fascination with Kourtney Kardashian.  I attribute the celebrity crush to her fearless fashion sense (far bolder than my own) and her glamorous lifestyle — but then again how many celebs share those characteristics?  So who knows why I find her so interesting — but I do.  And this post will stand as a testament to that.

So this is what makes her style so fetching and — though bold — accessible: though she opts for pricey bags (she’s wearing Balenciaga above) and shoes (Christian Louboutins), she’ll mix it up with affordable separates (both the skirt and top are by H&M).  She counts Zara, French Connection, and Chinese Laundry amongst her favorite labels — and here’s a girl that can afford all the designer greats at once.  Love that — and will accordingly mix-and-match the highs with the lows in this post.  Let’s begin with this silky little Jack by BB Dakota romper (scary to some of us, but promisingly of-the-moment) — $44.50, PacSun:

Kourtney would glam it up with some studded sandals (her footwear is fierce, and these Vanesso Bruno Athes are no exception — $145, TheOutnet), enormous shades (Tod’s, $350, Bloomingdale’s), and a slouchy, oversized bag (she seems to favor Balenciaga — so here is the iconic “City” style by Balenciaga, $1,445, Balenciaga):

She’d probably layer on a white/cream boyfriend blazer (how much do you die over the scalloped edging on this version by Wink NYC — on sale for $215?) and an eye-catching necklace like this multi-strand Noir “Makah” ($220, Noir Jewelry) or this pop-o-color Isabel Marant design (Marant is the darling of fashionistas in-the-know, particularly those that enjoy the boho-glam aesthetic; $280, ShopJumelle):

A perfect 10, even when strolling with the baby.

By the way, if you’re more into sleeveless than skinny-strap, Arden B (shh, no one has to know) has a luxe-looking yet affordable romper variation for you for only $59:

(Dig the little tabs on the sides of the shorts.)

Something about her slightly edgy-yet-feminine aesthetic (those long locks!) sets her apart from the slew of either altogether-rough-looking (ew, Kristin Stewart) or over-the-top feminine (more in my category — I’m thinking Eva Mendes for some reason).  Kourtney is also quite good at pulling off dramatic proportions — billowy tops with twiggy leg jeans or nipped-in-waists with boyfriend jeans, and I like either.  She introduced me to the Tucker brand of blouses I’ve featured so many times on this blog, and I just can’t get enough.  The magenta/purple color below is very Kardashian (on sale for $188, Bluefly):

…although I could just as easily see her in this “wild thing” leopard print version ($325, Stylebop):

She’d probably pair her Tucker blouse with some fashion-forward high-waisted shorts (on sale from one of her favorite purveyors for $47.99, French Connection) and some super-high platformed sandals.

She sports the YSL tribute sandals ($760, Nordstrom), but these scare me, to be frank.

I might “tone it down” (not by much) but still get the look with these Dolce Vita “Lance” pumps ($182, Wink NYC):

Although you can also get the YSL look for half as much with these Stuart Weitzman “Clip” sandals ($385, ShoptheShoeBox):

Don’t forget some statement-making jewelry — perhaps this Fiona Paxton necklace does it for you (on sale for $208, Revolve Clothing)? — and a pair of oversized shades (on sale for $16, MangoShop):

For just strutting around town with the baby in tow, how perfect is this billowy Rebecca Taylor blouse (on super sale for $82.50, Heery’s) with some boyfriend jeans (if you dare…I don’t think I do), some uber chic triple-strapped sandals (also on super sale for only $31.60, Le Train Bleu), and the J. Crew “Hockney” tote for carrying around all those baby essentials ($228, J. Crew):

Right on the money…

And because she’s often seen in studded pieces (bags, jewelry, shirts, and more), let’s take a look at some of the borderline-Rihanna styles she might wear, like the tough-accented skirts below — the first by Dolce Vita ($165, Wink NYC) and the second by Corey Lynn Calter (on sale for $71, Corey Lynn Calter), which she’d pair with a trim black tank and some edgy heels (Jenni Kayne, $495, Les Nouvelles):

Very Kardashian.

Maybe add on a bold necklace to round out the look — I love this Sequin brand version ($145, Charm and Chain), which I imagine layering under white collared shirts for work or atop an LBD for a night out:

Speaking of nights out, why not pair the studded booties featured above with this daring little number (Carmilla and Marc, on sale for $275, Les Nouvelles):

You might add on this chunky ring (Kate Spade, $95, Nordstrom) and pull your hair back in a slick, dressed-up ponytail:

Don’t worry, if you want to be as chic as Kourtney, you don’t have to invest in an entirely black wardrobe.  She’s regularly spotted in daring colorful choices, especially silky little get-ups that she balances with heavy-handed (or…soled?) footwear, and particularly when she’s in Miami, epicenter of flashy clothing:

You can test the look with this Walter blouse ($118, National Jean Company), a pair of white shorts (I’m mildly obsessed with this sailor-inspired variation — on sale for $35.99, French Connection):

And maybe this pair of heavily-adorned sandals by House of Harlow, Nicole Richie’s line (on sale for $124, Wink NYC):

Or if you’re more a “dress” girl (which I am — from May through September, I’m spotted in little else), don’t you die over this Tibi shift (on mega-sale for $100, Heery’s):

I could just as easily see her sporting this punchy filigree dress ($86, Le Train Bleu):

…perhaps because I always seem to remember her wearing this chicly-shaped French Connection batwing dress, which has a similar “tribal” aesthetic to it:

(The dress is still available — though in a black and white color scheme — and on sale for $88 at French Connection.)  If these styles don’t have you re-thinking your fashion choices, I don’t know what will.  Whenever I watch her shows, I think — “Man, I need to step it up and try on some new things every now and then.”  A good place to be.

Addendum:

Shopbop is offering an additional 20% off all sale items with the coupon code EXTRA20 today and tomorrow — it’s rare that this retailer ever offers coupon codes, so snap to it, ladies!

Wintour in Summer

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on July 12, 2010 at 5:13 pm

Have you seen The September Issue?  I somehow conned my fiance into letting me watch it, and was absolutely riveted for the entirety of the film (he promptly fell asleep).  It’s a documentary about the making of the September Issue of Vogue (most of you probably know already that the September Issue is The Issue of the year — at some point in the film, someone says its release is almost like January to fashionistas — a time to reinvent, try new trends, and so forth).  The documentary follows noted “Ice Queen” Anna Wintour around as she fulfills her duties as editor-in-chief of American Vogue. The interesting bit, of course, is that you never quite get a sense for who she is; she remains elusive, exacting, and steely throughout (even the segments with her daughter are stiff, rehearsed), although there is something almost vulnerable about her soft-spokeness, her taciturnity when reviewing designers, and the expressivity of her eyes when she takes off her ubiquitous shades.  Fascinating.

She dresses with pure class and is most commonly seen in a perfectly-tailored sheath dress like the Tory Burch classic below ($365, Saks), killer shades (Versace, $190, Nordstrom), and mega-bling ($1,398, House of Lavande).

If you’re channeling Anna, you’ll probably also need an upscale, classic-styled bag, like this Marc Jacobs arm candy ($1,295, Barney’s):

Perfectly polished.  Very Wintour-ready.

Though she often gravitates towards florals, the sheath is the underlying requirement — and this DVF would be perfectly passable ($325, Shopbop), especially when layered beneath a boxy Oscar de la Renta jacket ($2,390, Net-A-Porter) and a chunky, blingy collar necklace (Flutter by Jill Gordon, on sale for $280, Les Nouvelles):

The jacket above reminds me that one of my favorite scenes in the documentary, when Ms. Wintour (I just can’t call her by her first name) visits with Oscar de la Renta — just two kingpins of the fashion industry, putting their heads together.  Their combined power and discriminating taste is honestly humbling.  I also happen to think that Mr. de la Renta is just the classiest, most charming gent out there (my fiance excluded):

I should also mention that Ms. Wintour is always pushing the jacket — it’s the focal point of so many of her outfits and so many of her fashion spreads.  I don’t blame her — I love a lovely coat.  Something like this dazzling Matthew Williamson brocaded jacket (sorry everything in this post is so pricey, but she is not a bargain-hunting lady — $1,183, MyTheresa):

Love the nipped-in waist (and so does Ms. Wintour — she is always body-conscious).  And it’d go perfect with this perfection-in-fabric-form sheath (also Oscar de la Renta, $1,590, Net-A-Porter):

The above dress would look equally fab with this slightly less expensive (though still not exactly cheap) Alex & Eli topper (on sale for $339, Les Nouvelles):

And of course you can’t go wrong snazzing up a classic black sheath (you can find them all over the place for relatively affordable prices — Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, Banana Republic, and so forth — I just found the most incredible version at H&M for $35.  Love a good deal.  And black always looks more expensive than it is).  Add a bold floral print coat like this Anne Klein piece (the floral is extremely Anna Wintour-esque — on sale for $169, Anne Klein) or this artful (almost water-color-inspired) Rachel by Rachel Roy jacket (on sale for $82.99, Rachel Roy):

Don’t forget the jewels — I love this costume version of a Wintour classic from J. Crew ($98, J. Crew):

For something on the lighter side (yes, Anna has one — see below), consider a bold sequined coat (the first: L’Wren Scott, $1,002, TheOutnet; the second: on sale for $49, Newport News) over a creamy vanilla colored dress (Fendi, $690, StyleBop):

Though the slouchy style of the sequin jacket above may be a bit of a stretch for Ms. Wintour, I just had to include it because I was so inspired by my favorite little fashion magpie, Olivia Palermo, and the downtown-cool vibe she scored in her own sequined coat (side note: the shoes are by Aldo — love the mix of high and low):

And, though I’ve mentioned this throughout the post, you have just GOT to have oversized-jewel collar necklaces aplenty if you’re going for the Wintour look.  I could not stop ogling at her phenomenal collection while watching the movie.

One of my favorite jewelry designers, Bounkit, has jewels aplenty in a similar style.  Consider these opulent pieces ($1,540 each, Bounkit — and take 20% off now through July 18, 2010 when you enter SUMMER2010 in the promotional code box):

For something in the realm of realistic affordability, check out these awesome designs by the Art for Interior designer ($130 apiece — to order, visit her blog for images and email her at nerida1@gmail.com):

Or forgo the problem of finding a suitable necklace altogether by snagging this Tory Burch dress with built-in baubles ($430, Net-A-Porter):

Of course, Anna Wintour tops it all off with a lavish amount of fur.  But because many of you have moral and perhaps aesthetic objections to this and because it is, after all, summer — we’ll leave that issue to Wintour (and winter).

Until next time…

Getting Maui-ed

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on July 9, 2010 at 7:45 pm

This past Wednesday was the ONE MONTH mark until the Big Wedding Day (!) — I can’t believe it!  I’m over.the.moon.  These last few weeks, I’ve been revisiting my favorite wedding blogs (I stopped checking them out after the first few weeks of wedding planning — it was sensory overload and only had me stressed at the millions of options I could pursue.  As you might guess, I am fairly exacting in terms of what I like and what I don’t, so I didn’t feel lost without them — I actually felt much more confident in their absence.)  I’ve recently returned to drooling over Snippet & Ink’s daily serving of wedding-related eyecandy.  One of the posts this week was all about a vintage Hawaii honeymoon (insert “oohs” and “aahs”):

(Picture courtesy of Snippet & Ink)

And though my fiance and I are Belize-bound for our honeymoon (we’re staying at movie director Francis Ford Coppola’s ridiculous resort, Turtle Inn — eee!  So exciting!), I felt completely inspired by the post and begin envisioning all sorts of Blue Lagoon looks.  This Anthropologie one-piece had caught my eye awhile ago — not that I’m a big one-piece girl (I in fact have never worn one — at least not since I was 3 years old, donning a Minnie Mouse version) — but isn’t the retro cut and style just TDF (to die for — $198, Anthropologie)?

Perfect with this bamboo handle tote (on sale for $66, Talbots — and before you write the store off as “mom” territory, check it out!  It has some surprisingly updated styles) and some Bernardo t-straps (I’ve seen this line carried in my favorite accessory shop, Sassanova — $89, SandalWorld):

If you’re a prepster, this Lilly variation on the Hawaiian-print bikini may be more up your alley (something very “hula girl” about it — $128, Lilly Pulitzer):

Tote your belongings around in this perfectly beachy Elaine Turner bag ($150, Endless):

Then accent with this adorable Amanda Pearl “lei” necklace (no one said you can’t accessorize a bathing suit — on sale for $74, Shopbop) and some Mystique-brand shell-adorned flip flops ($98, SandalWorld):

For after-the-beach drinks, slip into this little Hawaiian print dress (kind of love the kitschiness of the print  — on sale for $59, French Connection), some spiffy red wedges (I own this exact Pink Studio brand pair and LOVE them — $83, Endless), and this Elaine Turner tote (can’t get enough of her stuff — $195, Neiman’s):

I am all about that fiery red-orange shade at the moment — so much so that Essie’s Geranium ($8, Essie Shop) has become more of a heavy hitter in recent weeks than the Magpie Classic “Lollipop” color in my lineup of nail colors:

For that reason, I’m also kind of bananas over this inexpensive TopShop bikini in just the right coral-red shade ($16 for top, $14 for bottom — TopShop):

Talk about the perfect accompaniment to a Hawaiian sunset, mai tais in hand…

And if you need something for the dining hour, how about this equally pitch-perfect Thread Social number (on sale for $364, Shopbop) — love the detailing on the shoulders, which sort of remind me of orchid leis:

Keep the shoes simple and unfussy.  Wedges or nude/blush colored pumps are best.  Or maybe this (Hawaiian) punch-y little dress is more your style (no eStore available — have to buy it in person at Club Monaco!):

I’m also obsessed with this (modestly priced!) French Connection top (on sale for $29, French Connection) — especially with your favorite white jeans:

If you’re bold, you might pair it with these all-the-rage Matt Bernson gladiators (every celeb and her mother has been seen in them — $169, Matt Bernson):

…but I’d probably keep it light with the white t-straps featured above or the Kate Spade Ines sandals shown below.  But regardless of shoe choice, how perfect is this maize-colored lei necklace ($38, Anthropologie) for completing the look?

Mai tai perfection!

If this whole vibrant orange hue just isn’t your thing, let’s return to the Blue Lagoon aesthetic and cool down with this to-die-for Pucci print bikini (a breezy $580, Net A Porter):

Amp up the surfer-chic look with one of these half hippie, half “I have excellent taste”  SeaBags — they’re made of recovered sails, come in all kinds of cool style (I love the sailor’s knot version below), and are extremely durable ($110, SeaBags):

For something equally “rustic,” try this Bonheur jute tote ($40, YesStyle)?  Isn’t the insignia on the front perfectly vintage?

Back to the blue: opt for this refreshing aqua blue bikini by the indomitable Melissa Odabash ($240, Net-A-Porter):

It would look kickin paired with the coral-red shade I’ve been swooning over ($400, Melissa Odabash):

Especially with these going-for-the-gold gladiator sandals (BCBGeneration, $78, Zappos):

But you could also get away with a simple white or alternate-shade-of-blue cover up, like this Juicy Couture version (on sale for $77, Juicy Couture):

Or maybe even this busy little number by DVF (on sale for $163, Revolve Clothing):

When opting for the latter, I’d tone all accessories down to a simple blue tote — I love the simplicity of this Tory Burch Jaden carry-all (and the blue is so brilliant! — on sale for $136, Bloomingdale’s):

And these little rope-detailed Kate Spade sandals (die over them — and don’t know why I have not yet bought them yet…on sale for $178, Endless):

If you’re getting dolled up, you might opt for this ALOHA of a dress by Yumi Kim (apparently Stephanie Pratt of The Hills fame has also been spotted in it — sorry if that’s a detractor rather than a motivator — $193, Yumi Kim):

(If you are into the romper — so hot right now — she has tons of fun prints and styles for you.  Don’t hate — I’ve seen girls pull them off and look adorable.)  Punch things up even more with this precious pair of Lanvin flats (love the oversized flower/pom-pom — $335, MyTheresa):

Alternately, this ModCloth “Molokai” skirt ($53.99, ModCloth) could look darling with a simple white tank and the Ines sandles above:

Offset the look with this bold statement-making necklace (love that it sort of looks like sea glass or coral or something — $175, Charm and Chain):

MAHALO!

(Note: I stole the post title from Aiden in Sex & the City.  Don’t judge that I still quote from the show on a regular basis.)

Sweet Dreams

In Accessories, Sleepwear/Loungewear on July 8, 2010 at 4:49 pm

The past couple of weeks, I’ve had precious few hours of sleep, which I largely attribute to wedding planning and wedding-related stress.  (I hesitate to call it “stress” because I’ve enjoyed planning so much, but there are some nights where I just lay wide-eyed in bed, running over the things I want to do the next morning and wondering whether or not I should order a different set of napkins, as I wasn’t satisfied with the first batch, and fretting about other issues of equal (pathetically unimportant) magnitude.)  This has completely thrown me for a loop because I’ve been a morning person for quite some time now.  Even as an undergrad, I would set my alarm for 7 a.m. to get up and get things done, despite the fact that my classes weren’t scheduled until later in the day.  I’m just keener, fresher, more observant in the morning.  So this groggy, bleary-eyed feeling I’ve been experiencing the past few weeks when my alarm so crudely (and rudely) interrupts my sound sleep is entirely foreign and disconcerting.  As a result, I am thinking about sleep far more than I should, and I’ll satisfy that craving by making this post a tribute to the land of nod and all the accoutrements that make those precious hours so sweet…

Who doesn’t dream of the sort of Audrey Hepburn glamor conveyed in the above shot from “Breakfast At Tiffany’s”?  Lucky for us, designer Mary Green has come out with a replica of the above eye mask for when you just feel like playing princess ($33, Mary Green):

I’m more inclined towards the classic reversible “Good Morning / Good Night” mask ($17, Journelle), which I’d pair with an equally luxe-looking satin robe by Matters of Leisure ($206, Journelle):

(You should know before progressing any further in this post that I am heavily inclined toward the ultra-feminine when it comes to sleepwear.  If you’re not into satin and lace, you may opt out at this point…)  I’m mildly obsessed with little bralette-brief sets like this super sweet Bluebird by Eberjey set, sold at Ann Taylor — $28 for top, $18 for bottoms, but currently 30% off):

So sweet — love the soft iris color.  These oh-so-soft, ultra-breathable Only Hearts hipsters in dove white are my idea of the perfect sleep short ($38, Lille Boutique):

The vintage styling is even more apparent in the corresponding bralette ($48, Lille Boutique):

For something a bit peppier, I love this Cosabella set in “lipstick” ($49.50 for top, $32.50 for bottoms, ChickDownTown):

(For everyday undergarment wear, however, I’m a huge believer in Hanky Panky, and I’ll never switch back.  Their low-rise versions are available for $18 at Bloomie’s — and almost anywhere, for that matter — and come in a range of happy colors.  I’m into the BRIGHT reds, HOT pinks, and FIERY oranges.)

In keeping with this sunny palette, how beyond adorable is this Juicy Couture set ($60 for top, $55 for bottoms, Net-A-Porter)?

Love!  Boxer shorts are definitely my sleepwear of choice — but I’m ridiculously picky about them.  They can’t be too short or too long and they can’t be made of a thick material.  I’m actually kind fond of inexpensive Gap and Aerie versions — they come in cute prints, are wallet-friendly, and tend to meet my material-and-length specifications (polka dot version below: $15.50, Aerie):

These little Tory Burch shorts also caught my eye — how cheery is the beachy print (on sale for $38.50, Tory Burch)?

I like to pair my boxers with my favorite Splendid tank top (the “2×1″ — $42, Revolve Clothing), solid white Hanes’ little boys tees ($5/pop, Hanes), or the collection of super-soft, broken-in t-shirts I’ve filched from my fiance (my favorite: an oversized heather gray “Virginia Baseball tee” — so, so soft — you can buy your own at the Cavalier Team Shop for $20):

If I’m feeling extra glam, I like little sets like this 3.1 Phillip Lim find ($66.50 for top; $66.50 for bottom, La Garconne) layered under a little cami-and-shorts set (Juicy Couture, $98, Revolve Clothing), or a silky robe, like this Mary Green kimono ($93, ChickDownTown):

I’m also loving this little TopShop romper in bubble gum pink ($55, TopShop):

So breathable, so comfy.  When I’m in my ultra-low-key mode, I’ll snuggle up in my oversized waffle-knit robe, which I had monogrammed with my new initials (and, though you’re probably not supposed to wear your initials until your wedding day, I have worn it regularly over the past few months…)  I got mine from Pottery Barn of all places, and it’s the coziest thing imaginable ($89, plus $6.50 for monogramming, Pottery Barn):

Of course you’ve got to have the perfect bed set-up to maximize comfort.  Mine is currently outfitted with the “Scallops” line of Matouk brand linens — love, love, LOVE Matouk! — and this is the exact set I have, including the comforter:

My fiance and I are switching to the far more gender-neutral Pine Cone Hill “Genevieve” collection (snap up your own set at Horchow) — don’t you love how elegant and peaceful it makes the room look?

I’m accenting with lots of silver around the room — Julep cups, silver frames, and so forth.  It will be a little sanctuary.  By the way, a lot of “sleep specialists” will advise you to scent your sheets/pillows with lavender, but I find it cloying.  In my opinion, there’s nothing more soothing than fresh-out-the-laundry sheets — crisp, fresh-smelling, perfectly white.  (Hence my tendency to obsessively clean my sheets…like every few days.)  I also cannot stand the sight of an unmade bed.  I’ve been known to walk into my fiance’s apartment and make the bed for him — or to make my bed just before I’m about to get into it.  Neurotic, I know.

Enough on my compulsive behavior — and back to sleepwear.  I’m pretty much in love with the Cosabella line of underpinnings — they have the most delicate, feminine nighties, like this I-just-want-to-relax-in-it-right-now “Ever Babydoll” ($96.50, Cosabella):

(I’m really holding myself back here because I could go on for hours about the slips, nighties, and so forth that I love.  I went on some mega shopping-sprees in the lingerie department while living in Lyon, France.  I literally could not pass by a Princess Tam Tam or Etam without stopping in to check out their goodies.  Just love the girliness of it all.  I’ve happily had occasion to invest in and receive some higher end pieces from La Perla, Vanesso Bruno, and the like as the wedding/honeymoon draw near — ooh la la!)  For around-the-apartment midnight-hour activity, I like little soft slippers like these Esthers by Topshop ($16).  This is primarily because I’ve lived in old D.C. houses for my whole life and they are sadly prone to bugs — nothing more disgusting than being caught off guard by a cricket while I’m barefoot:

Well, let me speak more honestly: I’m usually seen in my ratty old “Wicked Good” mocs from L.L. Bean ($49.95).  I literally live in them come October of every year.  I may even have snuck out to the grocery in them a time or two (shame on me).

They’re not sexy, but they are just about the most comfortable thing you can imagine — and they provide extra padding in the event that I encounter a late-night critter on my way to jotting down a note (I am the queen of getting up in the middle of the night to make a note to myself — the pads below are by Kate Spade but are no longer available; she always has adorable options) or grabbing a late-night snack (I love a little bite of leftovers before bed).

And for when I really can’t sleep because wedding details have set my mind spinning, I put a DVD on my trusty old Mr. Macbook (my go-tos are “When Harry Met Sally” and “Pride and Prejudice” — so typical, but so classic).

Mmm my bed is calling me now…

Chocolate Kiss

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on July 7, 2010 at 3:03 pm

My father once told me that his favorite color on me was brown.  I was confused and a little taken aback (perhaps even slightly miffed): brown?!  Of all the feminine colors out there, how could he associate constantly-in-color me with brown?!  But I slowly realized that brown is in fact one of the most flattering shades on a brunette — and one of the classiest colors imaginable when in a rich fabric or accented with ivory.  It’s as yummy-looking a combination as a perfectly-prepared mocha.

Think, for example, of how impossibly chic you’d look layering a Virginia Johnson scarf (on sale for $156, ShopPrettyMommy) atop a structured white or ivory dress (Theory, $325, Neiman Marcus):

Add some enorma-shades in tortoise shell (Kate Spade, $148, Nordstrom) and these Enzo Angiolini tortoise pumps (I’m obsessed with this style — and they’re so affordable! — on sale for $53, Zappos), and you’ll be classiest thing your office has ever seen.

Or, if you’re a label luster like myself, check out these picture perfect Louboutins ($775, Neiman Marcus):

Why not punch things up with these fab retro-chic enorma-studs by my personal favorite jewelry designer, Bounkit ($385, Bounkit)?

Alternately, classic pearl studs are always permissible (Mikimoto, $300-$1,400 depending on size, Nordstrom), especially when offset by this eye-catching Amanda Rudey smokey topaz and pearl ring ($140, Max & Chloe):

And — if you’re moving from day-to-night, simply whisk off your artfully-tied scarf and add this lovely hard-case tortoise shell clutch ($99, Johnston & Murphy):

For something a bit more party appropriate, how precious is this tie-dye inspired Campaigne dress (on sale for $119, Bluefly)?

I’d die to wear it with this ridiculous, bank-breaking Fendi clutch ($1,620, Barney’s) and something like these platform Rupert Sanderson pumps ($257, TheOutnet):

Darling.  Adapt the style to your office environment by investing in this Lela Rose dress (on sale for $570, Neiman Marcus):

Because the cut is so femininely demure, you could probably get away with those bold Rupert Sandersons while still looking super refined.  If you need something more corporate, I love everything about these classic point-toed suede pumps (Kate Spade, $258, Shirise):

They would look equally appropriate when sported with this bold chocolate-on-white DVF dress (on sale for $211, MyTheresa) and the iconic Mulberry Bayswater in white (one of my all-time favorite bags — and I just found out my little sis snagged one!  I’m jeal — $1,000, Mulberry):

For weekend wear, I’m envisioning this espresso-colored Milly top (on sale for $124, ShopTwigs) with your favorite pair of white jeans:

Wear with simple gold t-straps or — how sick are these Chloe flats ($625, Net-A-Porter)?

Then simply add on this adorable Kate Spade tote ($295, Kate Spade):

Love.  Alternately, pair the above tote with a simple white tee, these Kate Spade “Piper” shorts ($156, Bloomingdale’s), and a bib necklace (Milly, $235, Neiman Marcus):

Round it all out with these killer brown wedges ($187, Matt Bernson):

For poolside lounging, mocha-colored swimwear is surprisingly sophisticated.  I love the simplicity and (dare I say this in reference to a bikini?) elegance of this Tooshie two-piece ($182, TheOutnet), especially when worn with a simple wide-brim hat (Eugenia Kim’s hats are all.the.rage — $298, Intermix):

Or, if you’re more in the Kardashian camp of fashion (I’m not ashamed to admit that I obsess over Kourtney Kardashian’s fearless styling), consider layering this leopard print pareo over your bikini (on sale for $14, Spiegel) and sporting some timeless aviators ($139, Ray-Ban):

Or maybe you’re into splashier prints?  How unexpected is this Kushcush palm-frond-print bikini ($49 for top, $52 for bottoms — Bluefly):

Super fresh with a billowy white tunic — Calypso always has incredible beachy-chic options, and I’m especially bananas over this Madame A Paris brand cover up they’ve been carrying (on sale for $99, Calypso):

If you’re on the preppier end of the styling spectrum, add this chic Elaine Turner straw bag (very Charlotte York — and on sale for $147, Elaine Turner) and a pair of Lanvin shades (on sale for $146, TheOutnet):

If you count yourself an eclectic dresser, pair with this fun little Kate Spade tote ($338, Endless) with these fearless gold gladiators (I’ve been on the hunt for a flattering pair forever, but just can’t yet make these leap — these are on my short list, however: $175, TheShoeBox):

And, for a dinner out, how about this ridiculously discounted Derek Lam dress ($567, TheOutnet):

Love the upscale tribal chic look — perfect with these sky-high Lanvins ($383, TheOutnet):

If those are too “out there” for you (several of you wish I’d steer away from the platform style), these classic patent leather Valentinos with the fan-accent on the toe are stunning ($298, TheOutnet):

A nice, calorie-free way to satisfy your chocolate craving…

So let me be honest.  This post is somewhat transparently a plug for my fiance’s new business venture: Blind Pig Cocktails, a line of pre-mixed, high-quality cocktails.  I have to give him a shout-out because he was just featured in today’s Washington Post, and I’m so proud of him!  But beyond that — his flagship line includes the Jargarita, a twist on the classic marg, and an excellent source of fashion inspiration for today’s over-100-degree weather conditions.

Blind Pig Jargaritas

(It is brutal out there, and all I can think about is an icy cold, salt-rimmed margarita.  And it’s only 11 a.m.)  So why not spice things up with some lime green, margarita-inspired fashion?

How cheerful is this zesty, tiered dress (Muse, on sale for $78, Dillard’s)?  Sort of looks like the  pink-and-red parfait See by Chloe dress I was obsessed with earlier this season, only with a much slighter price tag.  Love the nautical rope detailing beneath the bust.  Pair with nothing but some unfussy white sandals (I know I’ve featured these puppies 2,123 times, but you just can’t beat ‘em — K. Jacques, $245, Net-A-Porter) and a white clutch (Tory Burch, $275, Bergdorf Goodman).  Done.

Or how about this cheerful, marg-color-palette Lilly dress ($148, Lilly Pulitzer)?  Love the cut of the dress, especially when paired with some white or lucite statement jewelry, like this Anthropologie necklace ($42, Anthropologie):

Slip into some white Jack Rogers or, for something a bit dressier, go bold with these green Ralph Lauren “Finley” wedges ($281, Endless):

This green Lilly clutch would match perfectly ($98, Lilly Pulitzer):

Or, for lounging poolside (drink in hand), this awesome Milly cover-up (on sale for $142, The Outnet)?

Throw on over this neon green bikini (JETS, $110 for top and $85 for bottoms, Net-A-Porter):

Toss all your essentials into this white bucket-style carry-all (loveloveLOVE — CCSkye, on sale for $419, Zappos):

But if white leather seems a bit risky for poolside fun, opt for this more beach-appropriate straw tote (adore the style — $86, Endless):

Another splashy beachwear option?  This darling Shoshanna two-piece ($90 for top, $90 for bottom, PiperLime):

I’d wear it beneath this breezy white caftan cover-up (Diane Von Furstenberg, $141, Bluefly):

Make things a bit splashier with these nothing-but-fun Betsey Johnson aviators in lime green ($53, Zappos) or these green-and-gold thongs (Miss Me, $22, Endless):

Or maybe for a little backyard fiesta, this little Lilly has your name all over it ($202, Zappos)?

If you’re super-bold, pair with this Elva Fields necklace ($268, Elva Fields), but if that’s too much, wear the necklace separately with a solid white sundress.

You might offset the yellow this this precious rope-accented tote ($29, Endless):

p

This little Shoshanna eyelet number would look equally darling with the above statement necklace ($330, Bloomingdale’s):

You could dress it down with these lime-and-white Jack Rogers ($95, Endless) and this vintage crystal Amanda Pearl necklace ($298, Amanda Pearl):

Or some gold sandals and this Kate Spade lucite necklace ($125, PiperLime):

Or you can dress it up with these peppy little Jerome Rousseau heels (on sale for $202, The Outnet) and this multi-stone Margaret Elizabeth necklace ($138, Margaret Elizabeth):

And if you’d prefer only a little splash of green — consider this adorable little lime coin purse by Kate Spade (on sale for $42, Kate Spade):

And maybe this fun, sporty little Marc Jacobs watch ($175, Bloomingdale’s)?  I like the idea of pairing it with some slim bangles for that bold jewelry look.

Or maybe just set a citrus scent wafting through your house — this Diptyque candle is perfectly zesty ($60, Beauty Habit):

But most importantly — settle in with an icy margarita (preferably a Blind Pig Jargarita) and beat the heat in style!

The Stars and the Stripes

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Shoes, Sundresses on July 2, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Happy (early) Fourth of July!  Independence Day has got to be one of my absolute favorite days of the year.  The steamy DC heat (oddly requisite for the 4th), the outdoor BBQs, the country music, the fireworks — all things I anticipate every year.  I’m already dreaming up the perfect getups to show my true (patriotic) colors.

First, for poolside lounging, a sophisticated, simple navy blue bikini like this Melissa Odabash is right on the money ($82, The Outnet):

Tote your poolside essentials in this American flag-esque striped beach bag (on sale for $136, Tory Burch):

Go full-on Ralph Lauren Americana preppy with an menswear-inspired cover up in crisp white (Kushcush, on sale for $120,  Shopbop):

A red-and-white striped bikini would also look festive for the occasion — how precious is this little getup by French Connection ($40 for top, $33 for bottoms, Bluefly):

When you head inside for a refreshing brewski, slip into this adorable 3.1 Phillip Lim cover up (I kinda just want to buy it to wear it as a dress…) — you can find it for $250 at La Garconne — and a pair of silver t-straps ($29.50, Gap):

Protect your eyes with these red Gucci shades ($220, Nordstrom) — they’re the eyewear shape of the season:

You can also snag the sporty style from around-the-block-again brand Carerra ($120, Shopbop):

I’m also in love with the idea of layering this nautical combo bikini (Kushcush, on sale for $122, Shopbop) beneath this inexpensive Piko cover up ($30, ChickDownTown):

Perfect with the knotted DV by Dolce Vita sandals I featured yesterday ($54.95, Endless):

This little star-spangled ring might be the perfect topper (Rachel Leigh, $132, Shopbop):

Meanwhile, a patriotic combination of red and blue beach towels are ideal for laying out (Lacoste, $19 each, Macy’s), whether poolside or beneath a canopy of fireworks:

For afternoon BBQ / evening festivities, consider stepping it up with this navy eyelet dress (Kitty, $87, eDressMe):

I think it’d look beyond precious with this perfect-for-the-occasion wicker bag (Magid, $100, Endless) and white sandals (K. Jacques, $245, Net-A-Porter):

Accent with this dangling star necklace — love the idea of recycling it for later use by layering with a fistful of thin gold chains ($70, Max and Chloe):

Also lovely?  This little form-fitted Lady Liberty number ($84.99, ModCloth):

I’ve got to admit that I’m not the hugest fan of the bandage-style dress Herve Leger popularized, but there’s something fetching and demure about the variation above.  I like the idea of pairing it with this little sailor’s knot-patterned clutch ($72, eBags), but if that seems like there’s too much going on for you, try on a simple pair of straw wedges ($49.50, Swell) with this darling bow-front clutch ($35, Aldo):

Or go with classic summery white eyelet.  I love this tiered Yoana Baraschi ($197, Otte), especially when paired with these kickin wedges by Bettye Muller (on sale for $144, Neiman Marcus) and this watermelon-red-accented Tory Burch clutch ($275, Bloomingdales):

Or how about this beyond adorable, uber-flattering Theory dress ($395, Shopbop)?

Picture perfect with these drool-worthy Bruno Frisonis (on sale for $199, Yoox):

Or, if you’d rather not invest in a pair of shoes you’ll likely only wear one occasion of the year, try this precious little bag — don’t you die over it ($78, Anthropologie)?

And finally — if none of the above tickle your fancy — I love a high-waisted, full skirt (especially after yesterday’s 50s era post!) with a trim little tank and some super high wedges.  Try this striped Alice and Olivia ($165, Net-A-Porter) or this seersucker striped See by Chloe ($206, La Garconne):

Throw on a fistful of gold bangles and this delicate gold star earrings (Gorjana, $45, Shopbop):

Patriotic perfection!

Back to the 50s

In Cocktail Dresses, Home Decor, Jewelry, Shoes on July 1, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Like my mother and my mother’s mother, I am constantly ripping pages out of magazines and storing them in an ever-expanding file of “things I like.”  Many of these I eventually forget about or ultimately toss in the trash, but every now and then, I’ll come across an image that I just cherish.  Kind of like those images in our collective cultural consciousness — the sailor returning home from WWII and kissing his girlfriend; Marilyn Monroe with her skirt billowing up; little JFK Jr. saluting his father’s coffin — images that capture a moment or a spirit so well, they earn instant icon status.  One of my all time personal fashion favorites has got to be this Oscar de la Renta ad:

Swoon.  I pretty much wish I could dress like that every day of my life.  (The digs aren’t bad either.)  When I re-encountered this photo yesterday, I was instantly daydreaming about a 1950s wardrobe, replete with full skirts, feminine pumps, and enorma-studs.  Essentially, all my favorite things rolled up into one placid decade where…well, not much happened (many now consider the 1950s a “conformist” period — perhaps relative to the rockin, rebellious ’60s.  However, the HBO series Mad Men has illustrated that beneath the calm, cool, collected appearance of the 1950s nuclear family, an inner angst was simmering).  At any rate, our concerns here will remain sartorial, so I’ll just jump right to it and present you with some lustworthy Betty Draper-inspired looks.  To begin: a perfectly polished Eva Franco polka dot dress with a flattering nipped-in waist ($258, Anthropologie):

Pair with black bow-toe peeptoes (Valentino, $695, Bergdorf Goodman), pearls (Tiffany Signature Pearl Necklace, $5,150, Tiffany), and a little top-handle doctor’s bag (I featured this bag a few day’s ago, but I just adore it — Anya Hindmarch, on sale for $778, My Wardrobe):

I’m also thinking that you’ll need an old-fashioned rotary telephone ($340, Conran) at home so that you can “ring” your friends for cocktail hour:

You might consider wearing this little strapless top with the high-waisted bow-front skirt by up-and-coming designer Sarah Seven ($280 for look, Sarah Seven — note that she custom makes every order based on your specifications and that, because Martha Stewart featured her in one of her magazines a few years back, she’s slammed with business and has a long waiting list; I know this because I tried to order one of her white “wedding” dresses as my rehearsal dinner dress but the wait would have been too long!):

The mustard yellow is pure kitsch.  Pair with these precious Kate Spade pumps (love that the bow on the sling back strap echoes the styling of the skirt — on sale for $227, FootCandyShoes):

Adorable, especially with these precious “Carsisi” earrings ($45, J. Crew):

Why not serve up some cocktails on a festive lacquer tray ($70, Decorative Things):

Maybe some Tom Collins or G&Ts in these festive green highballs ($20 for 4, Fishs Eddy):

And, to make sure your guests are reclining in comfort and style, cushion your couch with retro-cool pillows like this Thomas Paul style (this exact version is sold out, but check out his awesome printed alternatives from this season at Velocity Art & Design — they are usually between $70-$100/pillow):

For lunch at the club?  How about a 50s era madras dress like this little Lorick number ($322, Sunday Brunch Dress Shop):

I dream about wearing it with these Fendi pumps to give the look a slightly updated feel ($695, Net-A-Porter):

(I tried these on in Intermix the other day and my ankles essentially snapped in half.  Treacherous, but beautiful.  They are about 23 inches high.  Speaking of Intermix, you can get an extra 40% off their already reduced sale items right now on their site.  Slim pickings now.)  Add on this bamboo handle bag by Buti ($559, Forzieri) and these adorable sunburst-shaped enormastuds by Ylang23 Vintage ($180, Ylang23):

Another country club afternoon option: this Thread Social madras dress (on sale for $412, Honey in the Rough):

The madras colors are perfectly 1950s.  Wear with simple pearl earrings (Mikimoto, $190-$680 depending on size, Nordstrom):

And indulge in a summer game of croquet (I love this shot of Gossip Girl’s Chuck Bass):

You can buy your own set from LLBean for $129.  If you’re heading out for dinner and dancing — why not this killer Oscar de la Renta gown (I die over it — $2,790, Net-A-Porter):

Pin your hair up and add on this lace version of the Valentino pumps I’m so ga-ga over ($885, Saks):

And, to switch things up — spurn the studs and head straight for the dramatic with these Kenneth Jay Lane danglers ($180, Net-A-Porter):

Tres chic, ca.  Reminiscent of the amazing wardrobe in the film “An Education” (if you haven’t seen it — do it, if only for the fashion).

Back at home, slip into a comfortable shirt dress for your daily routine — I’m loving this little ModCloth number ($99, Modcloth):

Pair with these impractically high Louboutins ($735, Barney’s) and these awesome vintage studs ($298, House of Lavande)

And, while doing housework or baking up a souffle, tie on this retro apron ($32, Anthropologie):

Protect your hands with these patterned rubber gloves ($7.50, Fabulicious):

Housekeeping sounds a lot more fun when you’re all decked out…
