Peachy Keen!

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Beauty Products, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses, Work Wear on June 30, 2010 at 2:59 pm

This may disgust many of my dear readers, but my absolute favorite breakfast for several years of my childhood was a packet of Quaker instant oatmeal in the peaches & cream flavor.  So artificial, so over-sweetened — and so delicious.  I’ve since graduated (I actually don’t ever eat breakfast — not healthy, I know, but I’m just not hungry in the a.m.), but the peach-and-cream combo is as enticing then as it is now.  Who wouldn’t love to wake up to a bouquet of delicate peach-and-ivory rununculas, for example?

(Photos by Lucy Snowe — see her shoppe on Etsy.com to purchase prints)

A soft, warm blush of peach color is flattering on virtually any complexion, and I’m totally inspired to sport the hue over the course of the next few weeks of blazing mid-summer heat.  I’m particularly interested in this breezy Michael Kors caftan top (you know my obsession with the style) — snag your own on sale for $479.50 at TheOutnet:

I like the idea of pairing it with some crisp, twig-leg, ankle-cropped jeans in optic white — pick your favorite.  My favorite pair is by Joe’s Jeans, of all lines, but I’m loathe to recommend a particular cut or brand because I’ve probably tested about 342 different pairs and grimaced at every single one of them until I tried on the Joe’s.  White jeans can be immensely unflattering if they don’t fit just right.

I’d accessorize with one or two long gold necklaces — I love Carol Marie’s variations as they come in slightly different lengths and are perfect for layering ($125, Carol Marie):

And then this lovely coral-accented gold bangle by Kenneth Jay Lane ($160, Shopbop) and a simple pair of chunky, statement-making gold studs (love this versatile pair — on sale for $35, JennyBird):

I’d be reaching for this pair of gold DV by Dolce Vita sandals to boot ($55, Endless):

Other daywear options?  I’m loving this little LemLem peach-palette smocked-top dress ($215, Barney’s):

I’d pair it with these precious Cynthia Vincent for Roxy t-straps ($79, Roxy) and a roomy straw tote (Kate Spade, on sale for $236, Zappos):

Because the look is already so vibrant and multi-dimensional, forgo a lot of jewelry (I know, I know — it goes against my grain as well) and round it out with some peppy little studs.  Maybe this pair of quatrefoil/clover earrings will do the trick (Jardin, on sale for $70, Bluefly):

Alternately, consider pairing a simple crew neck tee in a fetching peach color (on sale for $19.60, J. Crew) with some crisp white shorts (the Milly pair below are no longer available, but you can find a similar version — also by Milly — for $195 at Bloomingdale’s):

You might consider throwing on your gold or white Jack Rogers to complete the look, but a pair of peppy flats adds an interesting dimension to a mid-summer look — refining the entire aesthetic a bit.  I’d opt for either these slingbacks (an affordable $36, TopShop) or these elegantly printed ballet flats ($118, J. Crew):

I’d either layer some gold necklaces (like the Carol Maries above) and add a pair of happy studs (M. Flynn, $130, Max & Chloe) –

Or I’d throw on a statement-making bib necklace — perhaps this Roberta Chiarella piece ($128, Max & Chloe)?

I like the idea of a tone-on-tone necklace-to-shirt look.  Finish with very tiny studs or pearls or…gasp…nothing!  If you’re headed to the beach, you can remain peachy — J. Crew has the perfect polka dot bikini for you ($44 for bottoms, $29 for tops, J. Crew):

Throw on a white cover-up and you’re ready to go.  Otherwise, wear a white bikini with this darling TopShop tunic/dress, which I’d like to use as a cover-up ($58, TopShop):

Ohsocute and Sienna Miller-esque when paired with some nondescript brown leather t-straps and some Wayfarers.  Alternately, cover up with the immensely popular Jen’s Pirate’s Booty (yes, that’s the name of the brand) “poncho” — the ever-glam Alessandra Ambrosio has been spotted in it and you can snap up your own for $122 at Singer22:

For a different (more date-ready) look centered around a peach palette, consider mixing shades of coral, salmon, peach, and white for a perfect summer look.  Start with this vibrantly-hued dress — like this DAY Birger et Mikkelsen knockout (on sale for $137, The Outnet) or the Amanda Uprichard “Joan” dress in salmon ($194, PiperLime):

Add this Wendy Mink quartz cluster bracelet ($170, Wendy Mink Jewelry), some simple gold studs, and a pair of dusty peach heels (the first — $150, Kurt Geiger; the second — $636, ShopSavannahs):

For a bit more festive look, you could also go in a slightly BRIGHTER direction, avoiding the dusty peaches and soft mixed quartz stones and instead pairing the dresses above with these cheerful little David Aubrey earrings ($58, Kitson):

The earrings would also look fantastic with this linen sweetheart neckline strapless number ($198, J.Crew):

Pair with some gold-accented wedges, like these Charles Davids (on sale for $124, Zappos):

and make sure you tuck this YSL peach-toned gloss ($30, Saks) into your little gold clutch ($155, Tory Burch)!

Or maybe you’re getting seriously dolled up  — check out ever-sophisticated Audrey Hepburn in her peach-colored dream of an evening look for inspiration:

Then consider slipping into this ridiculous one-shouldered Halston Heritage number (SJP wore it in Sex and the City II — $325, Net-A-Porter):

Imagine wearing it with your hair up and these bank-breaking diamond and moonstone danglers (Divya, $3,000, Max & Chloe):

High end meets recessionista cool when you pair the above stunners with this lovely TopShop flower ring ($40, TopShop):

Then you’d just need some simple gold high-heeled sandals, a tiny gold clutch, and a peach-hued manicure (the color below: “Cool-Lots” by Essie — $8, Drugstore.com).  To.die.for.

Get seriously into the color by primping for the night in a vintage-inspired, peach-colored teddy ($60, TopShop):

You may even want some glam mules — I’m in love with these peach-colored Giuseppe Zanottis (on sale for $349, Bluefly):

Don’t forget to powder yourself with this retro-cool puff ($54, BeautyHabit), dotting on a little of Benefit’s Georgia Peach blush (my mom’s favorite — $28, Benefit):

And while we’re in the mood for indulgence, make sure to pour yourself a bellini (champagne and peach puree — my lovely bridesmaids and I enjoyed them on the train up to NYC for my bachelorette party, and nothing could be more festive).

For work, why not wear your white suit (Miss Slick, you know you have it ready and waiting — wear it!) or a white, work-appropriate dress (the gorgeous little threaded-pattern version below is by Fendi, on sale for $425, MyTheresa) with a peaches-and-cream statement necklace (love this Hive & Honey design, $34, PiperLime) and a pair of dusty peach patent wedges (die over this pair by Pour La Victoire — on modest sale for $202 at Zappos):

And leave all your co-workers drooling with envy when you roll up with this wow-worthy peach-toned Michael Kors bag ($448, Bloomingdale’s):

Peachy keen!

Rainy Day

In Accessories, Jewelry, Shoes, Work Wear on June 29, 2010 at 1:53 pm

My fiance and I always joke that we’re getting old because we find ourselves constantly checking and discussing the weather.  Well, I must have forgotten my age yesterday because I was woefully ill-dressed for the torrential downpour that met me midday.

Every sludge-filled step in my pristine Jack Rogers had me wishing I was wearing something entirely different.  For office wear, I envisioned a comfortable, breathable black wrap dress (DVF is classic, but Banana Republic’s $120 version is hard to beat):

I’d pair with a bold, chunky gold necklace — either this Milly version (aren’t you psyched that the line has come out with its own jewelry? — $185, Saks)  or this Loren Hope black-and-gold statement piece ($160, Max and Chloe):

and either these snakeskin-printed black Sam Edelman pumps (on super sale for $64.70, 6pm) or these nude/camel Kate Spade patent leather slingbacks (on sale for $224, FootCandyShoes):

Top it off with a heavy gold watch ($250, Michael Kors), a classic Burberry trench (on sale for $699, Burberry), and this killer black patent leather doctor’s bag by the one and only Anya Hindmarch (on sale for $778, MyWardrobe):

Oh — and, of course — a slicker-yellow umbrella (Burberry, $125, Saks):

You really can’t go wrong with a cheery, lemon yellow on grizzly day — just think back to the Morton Salt Girl for a little inspiration.

Consider, for example, this sunny Cacherel anorak (on sale for $416, MyTheresa):

Pair with some skinny jeans, patent black flats (Tory Burch, $195, Net-A-Porter), and chain link Ferragamo bag (obsessed with this little style — $490, Bloomingdale’s):

Alternately, for a day of shopping or errand-running, throw on a pair of traditional green wellies by Hunter ($125, Jildor):

Or maybe slip into some punchy yellow flats, like these city slicker yellow Tory Burch jellies (on sale for $71, Jildor) or these Lanvin classic ballet flats ($385, Zoe):

You can get the Lanvin look for less with these Blochs ($150, Net-A-Porter):

You might want to amp up the bright factor in order to combat the gray day doldrums — consider adding on a day-glo parka like this little Ali Ro number (on sale for $136, Nordstrom) or, if you’re petite like myself, this boys’ sized KWay jacket ($45, J. Crew):

If that’s too much for you, tone it down with a classic khaki-colored parka, like this Cole Haan (on sale for $186, Nordstrom) or this Juicy Couture bracelet sleeve anorak (adore the bracelet sleeves — on sale for $199, Bergdorf Goodman’s):

You could pair either of the above rain coats (a breeze to pack, FYI!) with some Burberry rain boots ($275, Bloomingdale’s), black leggings, and little tunic top for a sleek Rachel Bilson-esque look:

Tuck one of these extremely light-weight, water-proof LeSportSac totes in your bag on your way to work or while out running errands to carry your miscellaneous odds and ends — I love this “Passersby” style ($108, Shopbop):

If you’re not so fond of yellow, consider accenting your khaki/black wardrobe with a peppy fruit punch hue — maybe these Mia flats (on sale for $48, Endless) and this happy Kate Spade tote ($225, Bloomingdale’s):

The tote would also look perfect dressed up with these patent Christian Louboutin “Pigalles” (on sale for $333, ShopSavannah’s) and this Carolee beaded bib necklace ($95, Bloomingdale’s):

Offset the entire look with this classic brown-and-white striped Henri Bendel umbrella ($68, Henri Bendel):

Finally, consider building your look around this kicky Felix Rey umbrella ($65, Bloomingdale’s):

Throw one of the classic khaki coats featured above or this slightly “un-done” TopShop parka ($100, TopShop) over an Audrey Hepburn-esque, gamine, black outfit (a striped tee — the unisex St. James below is very of-the-moment, and you can snap it up at J. Crew for $85 — and some fitted, cropped black pants like these J. Crew “Minnies,” on sale for $59)

Add these funky little Michael Kors flats (on sale for $91, Cusp) and a lucite tie-on necklace (Aqua, $38, Bloomingdale’s):

You’ll be all set for braving the elements in style!

Crab Feasts and Clam Bakes

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Home Decor, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on June 28, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Over the weekend, I enjoyed my first crab feast of the season — one of the true delights of a D.C. / Maryland / Northern Virginia summers.  We spread out newspaper, steamed two bushels of blue crabs we’d picked up from the Maine Street fish market, doused them in Old Bay, and dug in.  Nothing could be better.

Most of the girls at the event (myself included) wore breezy sundresses to compete with the stifling June weather we’ve been having (upper 90s and what feels like 100% humidity — it’s stagnant out there).  Something like the Trina Turk Lucia dress in eyelet would be right on the money ($268, Nordstrom), although a bit dangerous given how dirty you get when you’re picking through crabs.

(Nonetheless, several of the girls wore white.  It’s OK to be impractical every now and then.)  Perfect with orangey-red nails (the Essie color below is aptly titled “ClamBake” — $8, Essie Shop) and a pair of nautical-inspired orangey-red wedges ($79.95, Steve Madden):

Love the sort of rough-spun, faded look of the wedges above, though I bought a pair of more finished looking tangerine-red wedges from Sassanova yesterday that are a tad more polished and oh-so-versatile (work, play, whatever!)

Another option for your summer seafood soiree?  This crab red eyelet dress ($65, Modcloth):

How adorable with a classic canvas tote (Tommy Hilfiger, $65, Endless) and some white Jack Rogers?

Alternately, go the cheeky route and try on these fun little Moschino crab sandals ($245, Sassanova):

Given the heat, shorts would also be a stellar option.  I love the deep azur blue of these upscale linen Cavalli shorts ($231, TheOutnet):

Pair with a white eyelet Cynthia Steffe top (on sale for $109, Bluefly):

I like the idea of adding some coral accents — maybe this chunky beaded bracelet (Carolee, $150, Bloomingdale’s):

Or this amazing gold toggle version by KEPDesigns ($225, KEPDesigns):

Both would look incredible with some simple gold studs, like these adorable sand dollar studs ($200, also by KEPDesigns):

If you’re dining seaside, consider layering a nautical bikini like this frilly little set by Undrest ($100 for top, $105 for bottoms, Net-A-Porter):

Wear beneath a crisp white eyelet cover up ($118, Anthropologie):

Alternately, wear beneath a striped, boat-neck tee (Day by Malene Birger, $100, Net-A-Porter) and a pair of crisp, sailor-inspired shorts (on sale for $41.99, French Connection):

Perfect with either some classic Sperry boat shoes ($79, Bloomingdale’s) or the Kate Spade Ines knot sandal in gold ($225, TheShoeBox):

Top it off with some gold anchor earrings ($175, KEPDesigns):

You might also consider a little navy-trimmed eyelet top (love the boxy fit of this shirt in particular — very Kate Spade –$34.99, Modcloth) with this sailor-detailed short denim skirt (Armand Basi, on sale for $90, TheOutnet):

If you’re into the nautical look as much as I am, you might consider outfitting your home with a few seaside decorations.  I’ve collected some marine life-inspired pillows over the years from Pottery Barn, but I’m in love with the vintage styling on these Thomas Paul pillows ($80 for the boat sketch version, 2BModern; $70 for the anchor version, 2BModern):

This retro-style wall hanging is also ideal in a galley kitchen ($159, Ballard Designs):

And how adorable are these little silver-plated critters ($28-$68, Williams Sonoma Home):

Anchors aweigh!

Freshly Minted

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on June 22, 2010 at 8:27 pm

While in NYC for the bachelorette party, my Parsons-bound sister showed me some of her most recent sketches.  One of them was a gorgeous dress in mint green that I haven’t quite been able to get out of my mind.  What an under-used, ridiculously beautiful color — feminine, retro, and refreshing all at once.  Nothing could look quite as cool and collected for the intensely muggy summer weather.

And so, in honor of my sister’s well-appointed palette, let’s get minted.  We’ll start with these absolutely gorgeous Rupert Sanderson pumps — TDF and on sale for $297 at The Outnet:

Lovely and ladylike with a cream or gray dress, like this retro-chic, Mad-Men-era Erdem dress ($548, The Outnet):

Round out the look with a gorgeous oversized-stone bib necklace by Kendra Scott ($170, Max and Chloe):

For an evening out, pair with this chic Kotur box clutch ($899, Shirise):

In search of other evening or cocktail appropriate options?  Try this gorgeous Shoshanna dress in refreshing mint ($363, Shopbop):

Or maybe this structured Kirribilla number ($395, eDressMe):

Both would look amazing with these kickily-printed Pucci wedges ($297, The Outnet):

Add a glass beaded necklace, like this inexpensive Anthropologie bauble ($32, Anthropologie):

If you like a chunkier style, this Anthology multi-strand necklace will do the trick ($88, Nordstrom):

While I do love the mint-with-gray-or-white combo, you can achieve a slightly different, more contrastive aesthetic with this cute-as-a-button DKNY bow-clasp belt (on sale for $49.50, My Wardrobe):

I like the idea of layering it on top of a black sheath dress with the Rupert Sanderson pumps above or maybe just using it to emphasize your waist while wearing a draped soft green dress like this inexpensive Fred Flare number ($54, Fred Flare):

Accent with a dainty Amanda Rudey amethyst ring ($130, Max and Chloe) and some jet black pumps (you know the drill — Louboutin, Louboutin, Louboutin):

Taking things in a more day-wear appropriate direction, consider investing in this just-for-a-Sunday-cruise (or just-for-garden-decoration) mint green, retro-style bike ($144, JustBicycles):

Add some trim white ankle-length skinny jeans or pants, a breezy white sleeveless blouse (MMCouture, $70, PiperLime), and some eye-catching white flats ($392, Bluefly):

Spruce it up with this Rachel Leigh statement necklace ($167, ChickDownTown):

Very Audrey Hepburn, especially if you invest in the Kate Spade bike basket featured below (seems to be sold out online at the moment, but I swear I just saw it a day or two ago!)

Cool as a cucumber!
Note: I apologize for the brevity of this posting and the upcoming week’s.  I will be in Jury Duty for the better part of the week and feel all out of sorts (not to mention sadly far from my little Macbook) between being out of my office at a particularly busy time and schlepping to/from Judiciary Square (as I’m not close to a metro stop, this makes the daily commute in excess of an hour, hour-and-a-half).  Ick.

Let's Hear It for the Boys

In Accessories, Shoes on June 21, 2010 at 4:25 pm

Every Father’s Day (and every gift-bearing holiday, for that matter), my father discourages my siblings and I from spending money on him.  He almost always requests “a thoughtful card” — and I think the most meaningful gift I’ve ever given him (based on his unexpectedly moved response) was a framed picture of the two of us from my childhood.  (Total cost: under $20.)  If the conversation I had with two of my amazing bridesmaids (on our way back from my surprise bachelorette party in NYC — more on that later this week!) is any indication of a general trend, it sounds like most fathers share my dad’s sentiment: they’d rather you not spend money on them.  That being said, there are some Big Occasions for which you’ve just got to dispense of your father’s wishes and find him the perfect little something.  And if that occasion never arises, well, use these ideas for your boyfriend, your brother, your best friend.  Let’s hear it for the boys!

For the prepster…

($195, Jonathan Adler)

Ideas on what to give a preppy gent?  A pair of boat shoes — my fiance wears them with everything (Sperry, $69, OnlineShoes.com):

If your guy is a bit on the bolder side fashion-wise, consider these kicked up colorful Sebagos in lieu of the classic sahara-brown Sperry versions above ($115, NeedSupply):

Have him pair the shoes with some other preppy staples — a striped button-down (on sale for $59, Ralph Lauren), a needlepoint belt (I bought my fiance the Smathers & Branson crab version below — $165, Smathers & Branson), and some crisp white chino shorts (on sale for $54.99, Ralph Lauren):

Finish the look with a pair of super-cool shades.  One of the best gifts I’ve ever given my (very preppy) fiance was an afterthought: I knew he’d broken his sunglasses and — on a whim — I snapped up a pair of Ray Ban wayfarers ($145, Ray-Ban) as a small “side” gift for his birthday.  He is now literally never without them.

My fiance’s snappily dressed father now wants a pair (he owned them back in the 70s too), which just means that these shades have got to be the most timeless, ageless, versatile option for eyewear out there.  (And they look equally flattering on men and women.)  Besides — JFK wore them.

For slightly dressier events, your prepster will need a blue blazer with gold buttons to look his country club best ($528, Brooks Brothers):

I think this red gingham button down would look adorable with it (Preston, $165, Billy Reid):

A nice little bow tie in a preppy print would be another perfect gift (check out Richmond-based Peter Blair’s amazing selection — my fiance and I had the cummerbund sets for our wedding custom-designed by them; $55 for a bowtie):

And maybe I just want this for myself, but for a weekend away at Cape Cod, what about this Jack Spade awning-striped duffel ($295, Jack Spade)?

Stock his dopp kit ($155, also Jack Spade) with Jack Black shaving and face wash products (my fiance’s favorites include this $16 shaving cream, Sephora):

For the Outdoorsman…

If you’re guy is more of an outdoorsman, buy him a classic hunting coat — I gave my fiance this Barbour coat for Christmas this year and he wore it constantly ($399, Orvis):

He was delighted to discover that it was an “authentic” huntsman’s coat, with a huge pocket in the back for game and waxed, waterproofed coating that would enable him to hunt in any and all weather conditions.  (He doesn’t really “hunt” anything but clay pigeons, but he was ecstatic about these features nonetheless.)  He’ll likely be obsessed with the cool styling of this walnut wood pocket knife as well ($210, W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery):

This Billy Reid field cap might be the perfect topper for a day in the wild ($38, Billy Reid):

And he’ll probably be interested in a little nip of the strong stuff while he’s out hunting and gathering — my fiance loves Woodford Reserve bourbon ($30 for 750mL):

If he’s headed out of town for a weekend, the worn-in style of this overnight bag will probably suit him to a tee ($265, NeedSupply):

For the Steve McQueens Out There…

If you’ve got a Steve McQueen on your hands (love that cool, steely toughness) –

consider directing him towards (or investing on his behalf in) a sporty leather bomber.  Belstaff is the way to go (but it’ll cost ya — well over $1,000.  See Belstaff’s site for different styles, like this Raf Button Blouson version):

For something authentic at a lower price point, consider one of these Cockpit USA “Antique Lamb A-2″ bombers ($395, Cockpit USA):

And of course you’ll need to get him the Steve McQueen Persol shades ($338, My Wardrobe):

To get McQueen’s more formal look down (he wore killer suits in various on-screen role, for example) –

Have him dress up in this killer plaid blazer (“The Ruston Patch Plaid,” $595, Billy Reid):

A slate blue tie should complete the look — Brooks Brothers has an enormous selection, including a solid blue tie that would work well here ($75, Brooks Brothers).

For the Dapper Gent…

Continuing down the “dapper dresser” road: a well-dressed man will invariably own a trench coat, and this Burberry style is both masculine and practical (and on sale for $397, Nordstrom):

For a weekend out of town, imagine how well-heeled he’d look heading to the airport with this rich brown leather “Trans-Atlantic” duffel by Coach ($695, Coach):

Pair with these classic Tod’s moccasins (I bought my fiance a pair a year or two ago, and he adores them — $395, Neiman Marcus):

Alternately, I just read about a small Richmond-based men’s footwear company — the Rider Boot Company — who has just come out with a new collection of handsewn driving mocs that are just about the most perfect things you’ve ever seen ($225, Franco’s):

Love supporting the small, artisanal lines.

Another good gift idea for a sophisticated guy?  An engraved money clip is in order ($125 plus engraving costs, Tiffany):

And for unwinding after a long day at the office — a set of monogrammed old fashioned glasses ($59, Williams-Sonoma):

Invest in a set of whisky stones — soapstones that you can use to keep drinks cold without running the risk of watering down the flavor — for $20 at Sur La Table:

Thanks, guys!  Happy father’s day!

Going GaGa

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on June 17, 2010 at 5:31 pm

A word of warning: this will be a bit more whimsical and conceptual than the average Magpie post, but I just feel that I can’t go any longer without acknowledging the huge fashion influence that Lady GaGa has had on pop culture over the past couple of years.  (I’m also slightly obsessed with her music.  And by slightly I mean that I own all of her tracks and work out to them regularly.)  So take these styles with a grain of salt, but know that many of them can be remixed into your wardrobe in one-off fashion.  Sometimes you need a little edge — a bit of grit — to fold into your otherwise well-manicured appearance.  And who better to draw inspiration from than the spotlight-stealing Lady GaGa?

She’s been compared to Madonna, she’s frequently hailed for her fearless fashion sense (especially in terms of her tendency to wear haute couture in the real world), and she’s all around nutso — but what I like about her aesthetic is the seamless integration of 80s pop, irreverence, and futurism.  It’s scene-stealing, and it all begins with some killer shades (Ciccio, $175, Ssense):

If you’re worried the sisor shade look will go majorly out by next year, consider these inxpensive Aldos ($12, Aldo):

The crystal studs along the top are tres GaGa, as are these rockin Giuseppe Zanotti pumps (on sale for $651, Bergdorf Goodman):

To get the whole look down, pair with a disco-ready top (Velvet, $120, MyTheresa) and a mini bandage skirt (the brand “Pleasure Doing Business” popularized the style a year or two ago, but the style below is by Blank — on sale for $58, Bloomingdale’s):

Maybe a little disc0 ball ring is in order?  Slip this Kate Spade bauble on ($65, Bloomingdale’s):

Or how about a little pop star lace get up?  Madonna was into it, and so is GaGa.

Get the (much less risque) look with this little Thakoon jumper ($525, La Garconne):

(You probably know Thakoon because First Lady Michelle Obama sports his wares regularly.  Tres chic, ca!)  Pair with the Zanotti pumps above, this glittery mesh-metal Felix Rey clutch ($240, Felix Rey), and a disco ball cocktail ring (Kenneth Jay Lane, $100, Saks):

Alternately, start with this sparkling little Karen Millen “chandalier” clutch ($175, Karen Millen):

And pair with a futuristic-cool all-white lace dress like this “Ain’t Misbehavin” style by Trina Turk (on sale for $201, Trina Turk):

Especially smashing when worn with these TDF Louboutins ($1,895, Net-A-Porter):

Now, we’ve all seen GaGa go pantless (and shirtless)

…but hopefully no one in the real world will do so.  You can still get the pop star cool factor by layering this funky little bodysuit by Rosa Cha ($30o, Net-A-Porter) beneath a highwaisted skirt ($49.90, Express), however:

GaGa would top it all of with sunglasses — maybe these unexpectedly contrasting Mosley Tribes?  (Snag ‘em for $180 at Barney’s.)

And — you know — some not-at-all-uber-self-conscious gloves (Agnelle, $92, Galeries Lafayette):

Now, we’ve all seen and been alternately mesmerized or repulsed by the bow hair do she’s rocked:

But you can take the look home less riskily with this Jennifer Ouellette headband (on sale for $49, Barney’s):

Consider adding it to this futuristic, structured dress by Zac Posen ($1,690, Net-A-Porter):

Accent with pyramid stud earrings (CCSkye, $150, CoutureCandy) and ring (Malibu, $150, CoutureCandy):

She’d probably opt for gloves as her major fashion accoutrement, however.  (Not advisable for us mortals — but you can pick these up for other uses, i.e. keeping your hands warm in the winter, on sale for $79 at Thomas Pink):

And maybe these fierce Ruthie Davis pumps ($405, SheBoutique):

Now, any of the above pieces could be singled out and worn on it’s own to great success — so give it a whirl!  But if the entire (disco) schtick is too much for you, just curl up in bed with this vintage-style tee and call it a night ($26, Delia’s):

Ballet Ballyhoo

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on June 16, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Like many old-guard Washingtonian ladies, my mother purchases a season subscription to the Kennedy Center ballet series every year.  She frequently (and generously) takes me as her date, as she did last night, when we attended the “Ballet Across America” program featuring acts from the Houston Ballet, the Suzanne Farrell Ballet, and North Carolina Dance Theater.  I’m normally more keen on the full-length ballets like “Swan Lake,” “Romeo & Juliet,” and — a recent favorite — “Don Quixote” because I love the costumes, the sets, and the drama, but last night really challenged that perspective.  I was obsessed with the concluding act in particular, which featured a live bluegrass band and an enthralling hybrid dance style somewhere between classic ballet and square dancing.  But before I indulge myself in a full-length review of the evening (one dancer could not spin or leap without making the most alarmingly strained look on his face), let’s get to the fashion side of things: how to dress as a prima ballerina in your everyday life.

It doesn’t necessarily begin with a tutu, even though Sarah Jessica Parker had a Major Moment sporting one in the opening credits of “Sex and the City.”

You can just get your feet wet by adopting the petal pink-on-white color combo as our own.  Maybe inch your way toward the ethereal look with a manicure in the classic, best-selling Essie color “Ballerina Slippers” ($8, EssieShop):

(This will likely be my shade of choice for my wedding day.)  Consider this breath-taking Caroline Hedaya open-back dress in summer-ready linen ($298, Shopbop):

It’s the perfect way of subtly nodding to the ballerina style without sporting a full-on tutu and I’m in love with it.  Offset with feminine enormastuds (I’m head over heels for these adorably-titled “I Do” studs by Kendra Scott — $70, Max & Chloe), perfect blush pink flower-adorned pumps  (Martinez Valero, on sale for $149, Endless), and a fluttery little clutch (Sondra Roberts, $98, Nordstrom):

Other dress options  include this gorgeously draped Alice & Olivia in luxe blush silk georgette ($370, Net-A-Porter)

Could be worn with jet black Louboutins for an edgier vibe or kept light with some blush-toned peeptoes.  Alternately, go totally glam with these OMG-worthy bejeweled Giuseppe Zanottis ($1,075, Endless):

You pretty much can’t wear any other jewelry with those puppies.  They speak for themselves.  Maybe just some simple mother of pearl earrings — these Ylang23 Vintage enormastuds look they were made to match ($175, Ylang23):

These lovely Judith Jacks would also look gorgeous ($175, Nordstrom):

Looking for another dress option?  “The Adelaide” (also by Alice & Olivia) is frothy perfection and could be easily dressed up or down ($298, Shopbop):

If you’re going for the more formal route, keep in mind that ballerinas wear a lot of diamonds and crystals on stage because they are eye-catching, especially when they hit the stage lights amidst their routines — why not act as though you’re on centerstage as well?  Check out the Ylang23 Vintage clips I feature below — or, if you’re really glamming it up, this chunky J. Crew tangle of a bib necklace (on sale for $95, J. Crew):

Or maybe, for something slightly more subdued, this Lee Angel adjustable variation ($300, Lee Angel):

Now, if you are willing to go the Carrie Bradshaw route — go you, fearless Magpie!  Balmain was on your page last season when they featured this wearable art:

Pretty much TDF.  But you’ve got to be careful to strike just the right balance when you’re sporting something tutu-like, or you can quickly end up look inadvertently punkish or childlike — neither of which are particularly fetching, in my opinion.  For a safer bet (a modified tutu), this darling Betsey Johnson concoction will take you places ($378, ModCloth):

(Simply replace the electric blue sash with soft pink.)  Wear with sparkling enorma-studs or this beaded Day Birger et Mikkelsen necklace ($66, House of Frasier) and a pair of nude pumps — these Giuseppe Zanotti’s are endlessly wearable (they literally go with everything — $595, Endless):

These oh-so-lovely Pedro Garcias (on sale for $301, MyWardrobe) could also work for a slightly more formal setting if you swap out the beaded necklace for some diamonds (real or fake):

Round out the look with a flirty cocktail ring (Kate Spade, on sale for $46, Nordstrom):

For a similar — but slightly more Vegas-inspired take (check out the sequined bodice) — try on this Alice & Olivia (on sale in limited sizes for $331 at Neiman Marcus, but I think you’d be able to track it down in your size for the full price of $495 elsewhere):

If you’re into the tulle look but not so sure about the uber-femininity of the blush pink color, consider this black Lanvin tulle skirt ($490, Yoox):

Pair with sparkling enorma-studs (I’ve featured these before, but they are just the perfect style — $170, Ylang23), a super fitted strapless top (corset if you dare — can you imagine the looks you’d pull topping it off with the D&G tulle version below — a modest $2,350), and some amped up evening shoes (below — Pedro Garcias, on ridiculous Super Sale for $123, Chickdowntown):

Swoon.  For something a bit more dressed-down, consider this ballerina-pink sundress by Lilly Pulitzer — the “Betsey” ($248, Lilly Pulitzer):

Pair with these adorable (and affordable!) flower studs ($20, TopShop):

Or opt for the white eyelet version of the dress above and swap in a ballerina-ready bib necklace, like this covetable Sparkling Sage style ($158, Nordstrom):

Love the druzy effect of the stones.  Pair with gold sparkly sandals or heels, depending on the formality of the event — you could get away with simple gold t-straps for a summer graduation party or some be-sequined peep-toes for a cocktail event.  If you’re still seeking ways to dress down the ballerina aesthetic, maybe this strawberry frosting-of-a-dress by ModCloth tickles your fancy ($65, ModCloth)?

How precious?!  Wear with simple white t-straps — why am I so in love with the simplicity of the K. Jacques below ($245, Net-A-Porter)?

Bone-colored flats could also work.  Alternately, this butter yellow scoop neck dress by TopShop is reminiscent of ballerina garb ($32, TopShop):

(Keep in mind that TopShop earned a pretty penny when Kate Moss released her first line for the brand a couple of seasons ago and featured a black tutu dress that instantly sold out.  So if you’re wondering how The Fashion Magpie can jump from yesterday’s rocker chic Kate Moss look to a soft-and-dainty ballerina aesthetic today — just remember that fashion is, in essence, all of one thread.  Excuse the wretched play on words, but it’s true — consider Moss’ famous Vogue spread from last year, where she wore a kickin Vivienne Westwood tutu and some absolutely bananas shoes:

The devoted Magpies out there will agree that true fashion is a study in contrasts.)  Returning to the inspiration at hand, let’s see what other gems we can find — perhaps this frilly-fun tutu-inspired skirt by Paul & Joe (on sale for $214, MyTheresa):

Don’t worry, it’s not as brief as it appears.  Pair with a simple white tank and some strappy flat sandals — I’m gaga over Madewell’s recent launch of their eBoutique, so I’m going to continue to prominently feature their affordable classics, including the goes-with-and-under-anything “Ideal Tank” ($18, Madewell) and the Cypress sandal, which I’m absolutely in love with ($88, Madewell):

It’s a citified tutu look.   Very Rachel Bilson-hits-up-the-farmer’s-market, especially if paired with an of-the-moment cross body bag in a yummy brown leather, like this Rebecca Minkoff ($295, Shopbop):

But before we travel too far afield, consider these lovely, slightly whimsical add-ons to an otherwise straightforward getup of skinny jeans and a little white tee — a fabric-flower necklace (Stein & Blye, $38, Nordstrom) and some canvas ballet flats ($30, TopShop):

Love the ethereal softness of the color and the materials of the items above — they remind me of the sort of dainty loungwear and intimates I tend to reach for, like this prima ballerina terry robe (Juicy Couture, $85, Net-A-Porter):

And this matching petal pink babydoll set (also Juicy, $88, Net-A-Porter):

I’m also in love with Hanky Panky’s super-comfortable undergarment sets — how dainty is this “bliss pink” shade ($37 for top, $18 for bottoms — Zappos)?

While in the boudoir, don’t forget to glam yourself up with a retro-styled sparkle-dusting powder puff ($26, Benefit Cosmetics):

I received one as a gift and I get a kick out of it every time I puff it on.  So old school bombshell.

But back to footwear: note that J. Crew has oodles of darling patterned ballet flats — I’m obsessed with the two pairs below (first pair — $118; second pair with raffia rose accent — $185):

For a slightly glammed-up, gold-accented get-up — how about this Hive & Honey statement necklace ($75, Piper Lime) and these gold Bloch ballet flats ($175, Net-A-Porter):

Love the pink ribbon tie on the necklace — reminds me of ballet shoes.

Ready to dance?!

Moss Appeal

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on June 15, 2010 at 2:48 pm

This post is in honor of my extremely talented baby sister, who is preparing to enter Parson’s School of Design (yep, home to Tim Gunn and “Project Runway”) and become a designer in her own right (look forward to future posts on that development).  She counts Kate Moss amongst her most formative influences — and who doesn’t want to take a walk on the wild side every now and then?  Her unstudied rocker chic look is even appealing to a generally preppy, ladylike sensibility like my own.  Despite the uproar she started in the 90s  (and continues to sustain every coupla years) due to her heroin-thin look, you’ve gotta admit that the lady can dress.  Who else could make me want to wear leather pants?!

Step one in getting the look (even a modified, toned-down variation)?  Invest in lots of black.  (My mother is shuddering at the thought, as she always advises her chickadees to wear more color.)  Step two?  Insist upon a silhouette almost invariably comprised of skinny jeans or black tights, super-high heels, and a shift or voluminous top.  For boho-cool daywear, begin with some just-right black skinnies.  Mine are from J Brand and fit like a dream (on sale for $131, Bluefly):

Make sure you have an oversized black “doctor’s” bag — Moss is partial to Balenciagas, like this “Arena” style ($1,895, Barney’s):

Although I can totally see her with this fringe-adorned Cesare Paciotti (on sale for $600, Zappos):

Top it off with timeless Ray Bans — like my favorite magpie maven, Rachel Bilson, Moss is partial to the Wayfarer –

Snag your own pair for $145 at RayBan:

You may opt to go the slightly irreverent route, layering a vintage-style graphic tee (Rebel Yell, $84, ShopTheTrend) beneath a black boyfriend blazer (Bop Basics, $190, Shopbop):

Moss would likely top it off with a trilby hat and some unexpected footwear — perhaps fringed booties (check out Minnetonka’s back zipper versions for inspiration — $45, Net-A-Porter), lug-soled motorcycle boots, or some “tough gal” zipper-accented heels.  She would be all over these Alexander McQueens ($995, Alexander McQueen):

I pretty much swoon over those shoes — such a well-balanced design — but admit that I don’t think I have the gumption to pull them off.  I’m far too feminine in my sensibility to truly sport the head-to-toe rocker babe aesthetic.  Some of her less-than-edgy looks are more my speed, including her unexpectedly ladylike styling in this Marc Jacobs collarless jacket:

I’d willingly wear the entire outfit, beginning with a navy-and-white breton shirt (Vince, $98, Piper Lime):

Add a collarless jacket (J. Crew frequently has styles available, like the Dauphine, currently on sale for $99, but this DKNY version is arresting — $325, DKNY):

If you willing to spring for it, this hand-painted tweed Marc Jacobs is TDF (to die for) — on sale for $1,025, The Outnet:

Complete the look with some simple ballet flats.  I adore this pair of python-effect white leather Blochs ($185, Net-A-Porter):

The Ray Ban “Cats 5000″ are the perfect topper ($135, Ray Ban):

I like the dark-wash skinny jeans she wears above, but Moss is also known for her acid-wash versions –

Test drive with these behind-the-stage-ready Current/Elliotts (on sale for $185, Net-A-Porter):

Add a fitted leather jacket (Juicy Couture, $698, Shopbop) and some skull-print Alexander McQueen flats ($499, Zappos – she was the first to popularize the skull print scarf, which was all.over.the.place two seasons ago):

Of course, Moss’ footwear is about as adventurous as it comes.  I mentioned a couple examples of styles she’s been spotted in, but she is essentially responsible for the meteoric popularity of the Hunter wellie boot (after she was seen in her own mud-speckled pair at Glastonbury, the largest open-air music festival in the world, in 2007):

You can find these classics all over the place nowadays for $125, including at PiperLime:

She’s also sported classic hippie-chic mukluks (I picked up a pair by Juicy Couture this past winter and obsessed over them — get your own while they are out-of-season and on-sale for $187 at Farfetch.com) and devil-may-care pirate boots (snag a comparable style by H by Hudson for $365 at Madison LA):

In essence, she is one fearless fashionista.  And she can rock it all.

For evening wear, the look begins with black tights — Moss layers them under everything.

I’m partial to Spanx, which truly slim you down and make clothes fit seamlessly ($26, Spanx):

Add a sparkling, uber-mini dress — this Pucci (first below — $1,336, TheOutnet) and this 3.1 Phillip Lim ($416, also TheOutnet) are ridiculously lustworthy:

Of course, Alice & Olivia always carry a sequin-adorned style or two per season ($484, ShopZoe):

And Moss would just as likely be caught in an animal-print inspired version like this eye-catching Charlotte Ronson (on sale for $210, Blue and Cream):

Add some slick pointy-toed pumps, like Moss’ favorite Louboutins — the Pigalle 120s ($595, Net-A-Porter):

I can just as easily imagine her rocking these studded pumps by Luxury Rebel (on sale for $131, Endless):

Then throw on a chunky black cocktail ring — I’m in love with the Boleyn II ring by Megan Greene ($183, Couture Candy):

But this Wendy Mink onyx style lets you get the David Yurman look for far less ($105, Wendy Mink Jewelry):

You can’t go wrong with a little gold minaudiere (Whiting and Davis, $130, Shoes.com):

If you’re fearlessly after the Kate Moss evening-wear look, consider going all out with this big black faux-fur coat (248, French Connection):

Layer it over a slinky, slim-cut black dress, like this affordable T by Alexander Wang find ($105, Net-A-Porter):

Add some platform pumps (my boss owns this pair by Dolce Vita and totally kills in them — $165, Cusp) and a rocker chic cocktail ring (CCSkye, $175, Harmony Lane):

Right on the money.

For evenings out, Moss is rarely without some dangling sparklers — a bit of a departure for the Fashion Magpie, as I obsess over enorma-studs…

These pearl-and-snake TopShop baubles would be perfect ($40, TopShop):

Alternately, these Anton Heunis stunners are just the type of off-the-beaten-track find she would score ($135, Fragments NYC –  call 212.334.9588):

The bottom line with Moss, though, is that you can get away with anything — mussed-up hair, mismatched styles, muddied boots — if you have the swagger.  Rock it!

Lemonade Stand

In Uncategorized on June 14, 2010 at 7:22 pm

I spent the majority of this weekend outside — and I have a terrible burn to prove it (sorry, Dr. Dellatorre [my dermatologist]).  Between a polo match on the National Mall and a day-long zydeco festival at Wolf Trap, I perspired away under the hot summer sun, and all I could think about was refreshing myself with a long, tall lemonade.

(Wall Art — $159, Ballard Designs)

What better way to beat the heat than with a citrus-inspired wardrobe to boot?  I’m imagining a lemon frosting concoction of a dress like this Milly number ($338, Shopbop):

Pair with classic Jack Rogers in summer-ready white ($96, Nordstrom):

Alternately, I’m loving this Lilly “Sullivan” shift ($148, Lilly Pulitzer):

I like the idea of wearing it with a big white necklace — something like this statement-making Hive & Honey wood beaded lovely ($68, PiperLime):

It would look equally cheerful worn atop this See by Chloe shift (on sale for $142, The Outnet):

Pair either with these easy-on, delightfully-styled K. Jacques t-straps ($245, Net-A-Porter):

Love the airy simplicity of the style — perfect for offsetting the heaviness of the necklace and the breeziness of the shift.  For those of you loving the matchy-matchy aesthetic, imagine how picture-perfect you’d look rounding it all out with this Kate Spade tote ($175, Bloomingdale’s):

If that’s too much for you, take a page out of Tory Burch’s lookbook with a versatile white-accented rattan clutch ($275, Bergdorf Goodman):

I also dig this little white wicker basket bag by Warehouse ($48, ASOS):

If you need something a touch bigger for your daily routine, I’m loving this Tory Burch slouchy carry-all.  I feel as though you could wear it all summer long and not have to switch bags once ($350, Bergdorf Goodman):

Endlessly wearable and fresh-looking.  Top it all off with these inexpensive, fun-in-the-sun, plastic yellow shades ($30, TopShop):

After all, summer is all about the cheap thrills, isn’t it?

The italian ice pictured above has got me absolutely drooling.  Imagine enjoying one poolside in a little white bikini ($44 for top, $40 for bottom, J. Crew):

Throw on a breezy lemon-yellow caftan by Tashia (on sale for $272, My Theresa):

Add the simple K. Jacques featured above or these inexpensive Steve Maddens ($69.95, Steve Madden) — the design on the top of the sandal echoes the interlocking shape featured on the caftan nicely:

(As would Jack Rogers.)  You might also consider pairing the caftan with some crisp white poplin shorts or white jeans for shopping and lunch.  Other options for citrus-fresh daywear?  I’m in love with this sweet, retro-styled Anthropologie dress ($98, Anthropologie):

So fresh and yet old-timey, like a yellow-and-white striped straw from an old-fashioned ice cream shop.  I like the idea of wearing it with some perforated flats — perhaps these darling Pradas (on sale for $329, Barney’s)?

If you’re ready to introduce other citrus colors into your palette — and money is no object — don’t you adore this kicky Pucci number (on sale for $1,037, The Outnet):

Pair with white sandals or espadrilles.  I kind of die over these recessionista-friendly lace-ups by Spiegel ($49, Spiegel):

For the more label-conscious, these Ralph Lauren Finlays are perfectly styled (on sale for $251, Neiman Marcus):

Alternately, pair a breezy white dress or some white shorts and a white caftan with these cheery Juicy Couture flats (on sale for $153, Zappos):

The perfect summer splash!  Other ways of refreshing your summer look?  Tote your coins around in this precious little Kate Spade purse ($60, Kate Spade):

Or maybe throw on this aptly-titled “Strawberry Lemonade” necklace from Anthropologie ($38, Anthropologie):

Perfect with a little white crew-neck or a white strapless dress like this Lilly (on sale for $217, Zappos):

…especially when paired with these strappy Belle by Sigerson Morrison sandals ($195, La Garconne):

I also love the above sandals with this demure eyelet C&C California dress ($148, Shopbop):

(Love the daintiness of a cap sleeve.)  I’d pair with a sunny tote, like this cabana-ready yellow striped Tory Burch tote ($195, Tory Burch):

Alternately, this Mar Y Sol tote would be a fun addition to your summer wardrobe ($88, Nordstrom):

(DKNY has a similar version in canvas for $85.)  Now that you’re properly attired, sit back, relax, and enjoy a tall glass of lemonade!  It’s summer time, and the living’s right.

The Bachelorette Bash

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on June 11, 2010 at 3:26 pm

As per usual, this little Magpie cannot approach any event without preparing for the right event.  It just so happens that my over-indulgent sisters and bridesmaids have been planning a bachelorette bash on my behalf (next weekend — I’m counting down the days!), and I, of course, have to have the perfect wardrobe.  Largely inspired by Essie’s “Bachelorette Bash” color, I knew I wanted a silky, hot pink little number for the occasion.

I looked high and low for just the right thing and, finally, after a lazy midday brunch (and a few bellinis) with my girlfriend Miss Sleek, found it at Cusp.  They don’t show it on the site, but it’s a silky fuschia Amanda Uprichard mini — here’s a variation on the style ($194, Pink Mascara):

I’m going to wear it with these OMG perfect gold glitter Christian Louboutin pumps ($595, Bergdorf Goodman):

(Brief story behind these shoes: I saw them, died over them, and responsibly decided against indulging myself given the ridiculous shopping spree I’ve been on all year, courtesy of the wedding.  Then one day I caught a glimpse of them while prowling the Neiman Marcus website and I died again.  I thought: oh no, I definitely do need those puppies smiling back at me from my closet.  And by then — thanks to Sarah Jessica Parker, who wore them in the recent “Sex and the City” film — they were sold out in my size.  I called everywhere — sold out, sold out, sold out (inflection of disdain in the voices of all Louboutin purveyors).  Then, lo and behold, a few days ago, I randomly stumbled upon them again online and checked to see if maybe they had some restocked sizes — AND YES!  — I snagged the last pair of size 35s in the entire USA apparently.)  BUT I had already purchased a pair of backup shoes that I’m bananas over.  Now, don’t judge the brand but aren’t these phenomenal?! (Enzo Angiolini, $79, Nordstrom):

And so budget-friendly!  Woo!  I’ll be keeping both, thank you.  For accessories, I like the idea of some big, glitzy studs (CCSkye, $150, CoutureCandy):

If you’re not afraid of the matchy-matchy, this pyramid ring from my favorite cocktail jeweler, nOir, is ideal ($80, Noir Jewelry):

Alternately, I’m obsessed with this Alexis Bittar bauble ($140, Nordstrom):

Love the sparking gold-and-crystal combo and the organic shape.  If you’re all about the glitz and glamor, test drive this kickin Alice & Olivia ($495, ChickDownTown):

Sure, it’s been all over the place (I feel like I saw 3,983 celebs in it) and may be slightly last year, but — how can you go wrong with a sequined gold mini?!  Very Vegas here-we-come.  My thoughts are: there are some events that just invite you to dress up and over the top, and why not run with that?  If you’re more of a silver gal, check out this deeply discounted Gryphon ($149.50, ChickDownTown):

Love the idea of pairing it with those killer Louboutins I’ve featured a couple of times already ($1,995, Bergdorf Goodman):

If you’d rather play down the sparkly factor, stick with a bright pink, short, girls-just-wanna-have-fun dress, as I did.  I also considered this cinch-waisted, tiered Ali Ro (on sale for $165, Bluefly):

In the end, I decided I wanted something even BRIGHTER — a touch closer to neon — but I’m kind of in love with this melon pink shade for the summer in general.  Perfect with bright aqua accents, like this funky little Nuugard ring ($123, Max and Chloe):

If you’re loving the coral-aqua combo for this summer (so fresh looking), I also considered the Amanda Uprichard Joan dress ($194, Pink Mascara) in a peppy coral.  You’ve probably seen it before because Audrina Patridge from “The Hills” wore it all over the tabloids (…and I read them regularly — my guilty pleasure):

Love the necklace shown on the model here (this photo is taken from Red Dress Boutique, but they only have XS left).  I believe she’s wearing a Blu Bijoux brand necklace, which you can find for $57 at Max & Chloe:

I’m not sure how I feel about the silver beading that links the beads to the tie — I wish they were in gold.  But you can’t win ‘em all, and you can’t beat the price!  I’d probably be more inclined to slip into this CC Skye version (“The Gigi” — $295, CoutureCandy):

Or perhaps the “Sag Harbor” necklace by Amrita Singh ($250, also Couture Candy):

Either would look splashy with the hue of this coral Zimmermann dress ($178, Zimmermann Store):

Love the idea of pairing the aqua-salmon combo with gold heels and a little gold clutch.  However, as mentioned earlier, I was adamant about wearing hot pink as the bride-to-be.  (Sometimes I bear witness to fashion imperatives of dubious origin — why hot pink?!  I probably saw a hot pink-adorned bachelorette in a magazine, movie, or real-life moment in the past and it’s been so indelibly marked on my fashion consciousness  that I just need to carry it out.  I find that going with my gut in these cases typically works out, however.)  Other options of the day-glo pink variety?  Love the shocking pink of Tibi’s Grande Sol collection, in either the sleeveless (on sale $172, Heery’s — while you’re there, check out the ridiculous sale section — loads of Milly and Tibi and even Jack Rogers at 50% off!) or the caftan version ($358, Shopbop):

Such a happy color.  For a patterned alternative, consider this cheery, ready-to-fiesta halter by Campaigne (on sale for $119, Bluefly):

Or perhaps this Envi blouson-top dress (on sale for $79, Heery’s):

Somewhat similar to the classic Parker brand “cami” dress — and oh, how I love that dress.  Perfect for a night out, a bachelorette party, a date night — so feminine and so chic.  They come out with new, of-the-moment prints every season.  I was heartbroken when I finally ordered one on sale at Shopbop, only to find that it was gapingly enormous on me (beyond alterations) even in an XS.  I know, I know — I shouldn’t complain about that kind of sizing issue — but I so wanted one!  Get yours for $187 at Revolve Clothing and I’ll just envy from afar.  I’m loving this soft lavender print:

The style of the dress is frilly and fun enough that even in the lady-like lavender, you could totally rock it at a big girl’s night out.  You can find the style in tons of other prints/colors at Singer22 as well.

The other option I briefly considered when I was beginning to despair of my hot pink dream dress?  This lobster red Loeffler Randall dress (on STEEP sale for $225, Shopbop):

The top has an interested seamed-fringe deal going on — very cha-cha-cha and fun in just the way a bachelorette party dress should be!  The color is unbeatable — just right for a Lollipop red manicure (although I must say I’ve lately been veering into the Essie “Geranium” camp.  It’s perfect for the toesies once you’ve got a tan going.)  If you like the color but aren’t crazy about the spaghetti fringe detailing at the top, I also looked at this sweet little Anlo dress ($264, Shop Hysteria):

Die over the color and, as with my dress, find the cinched-in waist flattering and the silky material evening-out-perfect.  It also comes in this slightly-more-demure cut ($275, Thera M.):

The latter would be perfect if you’re looking to rock a statement-making bib necklace in coral or gold — the neckline is much more amenable to it.  Lastly, I’ll add that if you’re not so much into the candy colored cocktail dress, black is always appropriate.  I don’t judge.  There are some days where it’s just easier and more flattering to reach for the black dress.  And if you fall into that category, please consider this heavily-discounted, ridiculously gorgeous Nili Lotan ($86 — down from $345!!! — Chickdowntown):

Take it out to play with some sparkling accents — a pair of glittered shoes and maybe these delightfully-oversized crystal studs ($106, Rachel Leigh):

(J. Crew, as I’ve featured in previous posts, also has some awesome, affordable “big rocks” jewelry.)  I like the idea of pairing the dress and earrings above with the Kate Spade Carly ($375, Kate Spade):

So festive!  If, by the way, your girls aren’t so much into the little dress scene (or maybe your venue is not appropriate for it — though I’d probably still rock one anyway), consider a bright little “going out” top like this little Anlo top (cool back; check it out! — on sale for $58, Midgett Gray):

Wear with super-dark skinny ankle jeans or white skinnies with some statement-making shoes.  I actually quite like the Kate Spade Carly in plain gold — love the texture ($298, Kate Spade):

But Kate Spade’s “Clarice” is equally lovely if you’re more of a “I need to match” magpie ($298, Zappos):

Just thinking about all the kicky options above has got me absolutely giddy about my party next weekend — eee!  Getting ready for the bubbly…

A Nice Little Saturday

In Accessories, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on June 8, 2010 at 6:42 pm

So I woke up at 6:53 a.m. on Saturday morning and could not return to sleep.  When I got up to start my day seven minutes of tossing and turning later, I realized that I have officially left “young adulthood” / “early 20s” and moved into “older person” territory.  Not necessarily a bad thing — just a new development.  The early rise meant that I had precious extra hours to soak up the early summer day.  Perfect for hitting up the local farmer’s market and delighting in the freshness of the produce with my fiance.

(image courtesy of A Creative Mint’s stimulating, excellently styled blog)

Inspired by Madewell’s recent eShop launch and the casual-cool vibe their current collection projects, I dreamt up a laidback Farmers-Market-early-Saturday-morning-stroll outfit.  (You’ll notice that everything in this post is under $200 — and most well under $100.  I’ve received a number of urgent requests for more affordable fare, so I’ll be trying to stay budget-friendly for at least a couple of posts a month…but a girl’s got to dream!)  For the Saturday morning market, I was thinking an easy breezy little eyelet dress ($148, Madewell) and some strappy flat sandals ($98, Madewell):

I like the idea of accessorizing with some chunky wood jewelry (fits the whole organic food / close-to-the-earth Farmer’s Market deal).  Maybe this Jones New York necklace ($55, Jones New York)?

For more of a Parisian-chic “marche en plein air” look, check out this precious navy-and-white combo dress ($98, Anthropologie):

Pair with some open-weave white flats — these “knotted” Belle by Sigerson Morrisons are chic given the nautical trend this season (on sale for $154, Bloomingdale’s):

Alternately, check out these Parisian-chic peep-toe flats by Steve Madden  ($89, Steve Madden):

And, if you’re really unbuttoned-cool, I’m kind of loving the idea of these easy-on canvas Tory Burch flats ($95, Bergdorf Goodman):

Pair with a navy eyelet top by the one-and-only Shoshanna (on sale for $56, Bluefly):

and some crisp white shorts (below, by Milly, but you can find a range of styles from J. Crew at a better price point):

You might also consider these precious Milly chain-link shorts ($185, Net-A-Porter):

Don’t forget a roomy straw shopper for your purchases.

They’re all over the place this season, but I love the rustic style and oversized rope handles on this little Magid version ($78, Nordstrom):

While on the subject of roping, how about this awesome one-of-a-kind necklace ($129, Habitat Shoes):

Don’t you die over it!?  I imagine pairing it with a simple strapless navy dress or this little slub jersey tank dress in sailor-chic navy stripes ($39.50, Gap):

I’m also kind of head over heels for this dressed-up t-shirt dress by Madewell (their stuff is just what I want to wear on a lazy Saturday — $88, Madewell):

Pair with strappy gold or brown gladiators (below, Seychelles, on sale for $36 at 6pm):

You know I’m daydreaming about pairing the look with the Chloe It Bag of my dreams (“The Marcie”):

But you might opt for a straw shopper like the Magid above or this Free People straw-and-rope tote ($48, Free People):

If you like a look with a bit more structure and polish, you’d beat the heat in this crisp white poplin number (on sale for $119, ShopAdam):

Pair with some enorma-shades (below — Marc by Marc Jacobs, $85, Nordstrom) and a structured straw tote (the one below — Serpui Marie, $110, Endless):

Add on some splashy espadrilles — I’m in love with this punchy Oscar de la Rentas on sale for an OMG-worthy $158 at FootCandyShoes:

Alternately, if you’d prefer to stick with the nautical trend I’ve been featuring above, slip into these kicky Bettye Mullers (on sale for $144, Neiman Marcus):

The perfect companion piece that will take you from farmer’s marketing to your next door neighbor’s BBQ!

Addendum

Sorry to have posted this two days into the week — just when you feel furthest from your lazy Saturday.  (Sort of cruel.)  I’ve been overbooking myself — I’m two months out (almost to the day) from the wedding and I’m currently consumed by searching for an apartment for my fiance and I!  Busy times.  Bear with me!

Copacabana

In Accessories, Beach Wear, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes, Sundresses on June 4, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Brazil has become a force to be reckoned with in the fashion industry over the past few years.  The Oi Fashion Rocks show that took place in Rio de Janeiro last October had everyone atwitter (drawing a crowd of 5,000 and Big Name designers like Givenchy and Marc Jacobs) — and let’s not forget that Brazil is where Gisele Bundchen and Alessandra Ambrosio hang their hats.  But even without the recent buzz, Brazil and its fashions have always been affiliated with a certain vividness — a festiveness — and an open-armed joie de vivre.  Let’s toast to that copacabana livelihood by throwing on some vibrant prints and downing a few caipirinhas!

($12.90, Heritage1981)

We’ll begin by jet-setting down to the center of Brazilian culture and fashion: Rio de Janeiro.  Embrace the national colors with this jolly green Tibi dress (on sale for $200, Net-A-Porter):

(Love the racerback — check it out.)  Perfect for afternoon shopping or for throwing on over your itty-bitty bikini (we are, after all, in Brasilia):

The set above is by Tiger Lily ($149, Tiger Lily), and it’s skimpy enough to make Gisele proud.  Add a pair of sporty-cool shades to the mix — you know I’m obsessed with Carreras, which come in a range of festive colors and ring in at around $125 a pop, but you can get the look for much less with this $10/a pop 80s Purple version ($10, 80s Purple):

(Also comes in sunny yellow, hot pink, and a few other electric-cool hues.)  For daywear, pair a punchy little asymmetrical top (the one below is by comeback queen Halston Heritage — on sale for $171, Net-A-Porter):

Pair with some white cut-offs.  I know, I know.  Cut-offs?!  Those are permissible beyond 8th grade summer camp?  In this case, yes.  Little Alessandra Ambrosio has been seen all over town in her Siwy cut-offs, and they just seem appropriate.  These Current/Elliotts ($145, Net-A-Porter) are perfect:

Kick it up a notch with this vibrant beaded statement necklace by my favorite costume jewelry designer, nOir ($198, Kitson) — I’m bananas over it!

If BIG jewelry isn’t your thing, swap the necklace out for this pom-pommed pair of sandals by Lanvin (on sale for $349, Barney’s):

And add this cheerful embroidered tote ($48, Mia Reva) to store all your shopping finds:

Lazy afternoon drinks on the veranda?  I’m loving the idea of an easy maxi dress in a vibrant palette.  Consider this T-Bags in eye-pleasing royal blue (on sale for $203, Net-A-Porter):

Alternately, I might reach for this aptly named “Sao Paolo” maxi by Tibi ($398, Saks):

I think it’d look smashing with these David Aubrey coral baubles ($58, Kitson):

Or you might consider pairing a breezy, peppily-printed caftan or tunic with some crisp white jeans and jeweled sandals.  I’m loving this Pucci caftan ($558, The Outnet) with these J. Crew “Matchstick” jeans ($98, J. Crew):

These yellow-stone sandals by Mystique would round out the look nicely ($150, Mystique):

Don’t forget your too-cool-for-school supermodel aviators (Carrera, $145, Kitson):

You’d look just as fetching pairing your skinny white jeans with this festival of a palm frond top by Milly ($213, Revolve Clothing):

Pair with these vibrant green wedges by Ralph Lauren ($375, Endless):

If that’s too much of a color commitment for you (how often do you wear green?), a crisp white or a hot pink would be solid options as well.

This brings us to our next point:  if you’re enjoying the caipirinha I mentioned earlier (Brazil’s national cocktail!  — made of cachaca, sugar, and lime), you might want to dress in refreshing green to match anyway!

Try this zesty Milly (on sale for $318, Net-A-Porter):

Love the beaded neckline.  I’d pair with some of-the-moment white t-straps ($69, Steve Madden):

Add on this little green woven straw clutch by Serpui Marie ($71, Endless):

Evening out at the copacabana?  I got you covered.  How about this vacationista coral frock by Jets by Jessika Allen ($220, Net-A-Porter)?

Slip into some bold, festive footwear — these Louboutins ($509, Barneys) have been on my lust list forever, but I’m also crazy about these lace-up cha-cha-cha espadrilles in punchy geranium by Kate Spade ($225, Endless):

Alternately, inspired by the gold-adorned reinas of the carneval (a HUGE annual festival in Brazil before Easter), how about some glitzy gold shoes (below, $140, Ted Baker)?

And maybe a whimsical little flower to tuck behind your ear or pin to your clutch ($35 for set of 2, Ban.do):

Accent the shape of the silk flower with this precious gold ruffle cocktail ring ($55, ByBoe):

You can either wear a simple gold clutch (hard case might be best given the flowiness of your dress) or test out this splashy little thing ($78, Anthropologie):

Other evening wear options?  I know it’s black-and-white, but something about this print is just so…BRASILIA! (Diane Von Furstenberg, $385, Net-A-Porter):

Add some punchy heels — these Ted Bakers are picture perfect ($95, Ted Baker):

Be sure to coordinate with your Essie nailpolish — the color below is called “Life Saver” ($8, Essie Shop):

I’d probably pair with a streamlined (don’t want to compete with the bold shoulder of the dress) yet statement-making long clutch ($195, Kate Spade):

Saude! (Cheers, in Portuguese!)

Big Night Out

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Jewelry, Shoes on June 3, 2010 at 3:46 pm

When I was little, my father took me to the Kennedy Center for symphonies and other performances on several occasions.  I remember one in particular — perhaps my first?  I must have been five or six, and nothing in the world seemed more sophisticated or glamorous.  My mother dressed me in a “party dress” (anyone else remember having frilly socks and patent leather Mary Janes also dubbed “party socks” and “party shoes”?) she and my father had brought me back from Paris that summer.  It was green and white striped with little balloon sleeves and a green sash.  My mother spritzed a little perfume on me and, as I headed down the stairs, my father said “Ooh la la!”  That sealed the deal.  I was officially in love with the way that dressing up and heading out for an evening made me feel.  I was head over heels with the drama of a Big Night Out.  Whether it’s the opera, a black tie gala, or an uber-formal wedding — yes, please.

And while these to-dos are sadly few and far between in this day in age, a girl can still dream.  Ideas for a future Cinderella-at-the-ball moment?  It all begins with a formal dress.  And if we’re talking fantasy, I’m going to reach for the Big Guns: Valentino.  This one-shouldered black gown is the stuff of legends ($6,990, Neiman Marcus):

Then a classic Judith Leiber minaudiere ($2,995, Judith Lieber) and some faux cils:

Add some dramatic lace Valentino pumps ($895, Nordstrom) and a fistful of diamonds.  Insta-Cinderella.

Of course, some of us have to contend with the real world and issues of affordability (myself included), so let’s shelf those over the top dreams and look for ways to get the look in more realistic terms.  I’m pretty much obsessed with this Aidan Mattox one-shouldered evening gown ($385, Neiman Marcus) — I stumbled upon it in my search for a white dress to wear to my rehearsal dinner (don’t worry, I won’t be wearing full-length — or anything quite so formal — but it caught my eye):

Adore.  Can you imagine pulling your hair up, adding some sparkling enorma-studs (below, Ylang23 Vintage — $170, Ylang23), and heading out for the night?  You’d be the belle of the belle.

I’m partial to the design of the above earrings because they remind me of the spectacular lighting on the ceiling of the Kennedy Center opera house:

Love the drama.  Pair the above gown with these off-the-charts t-straps by Louboutin ($1,995, Barneys):

I know, I know.  Shame on me.  I said I’d try to stay within the realm of reality, but — how can you resist?  You could also pair the dress with some unfussy heeled silver sandals.  Stuart Weitzman’s Delovely heels are pretty much the most classic evening shoes you can own ($285, Zappos):

If you owned a pair in gold and silver, you’d pretty much be set for life.  And maybe it’s because I’m getting married this August, but this Grecian goddess gown in ethereal white has me at hello (BCBG, $214, Saks):

The same goes for this jaw-dropping Notte by Marchesa gown (on sale for $440, The Outnet):

LOVE.  And Marchesa is the premiere evening-wear designer du jour — favored by Rachel Zoe, it’s the most coveted label of all at the moment.  Add this little eye-catching bag to either gown — fireworks in clutch form! — by Whiting and Davis ($125, Endless):

And some chunky danglers — I’m partial to this clustered, knotty pair by J. Crew ($65, J. Crew):

They’d look equally stunning with this simple black bustier dress by Ports 1961 (on sale for $455, Shopbop):

Pair with some killer shoes — either champagne or kicked-up black will do the trick.  These Stuart Weitzman’s look lovely and sort of vintage in the “Misty” color ($325, Shoebox):

However, if you’re an all-black kinda gal, these Sergio Rossis caught my eye in the Saks sale section ($482, Saks) — very Carrie Bradshaw in my mind:

Consider pairing with a structured clutch — Amanda Pearl’s are to.die.for (the one below is from last season, but she has lovely new versions for this season), but they are an investment ($1,595 apiece).

Alternately, try this flashy little Felix Ray soft-sided clutch (comes in a few different colors and similar styles — $220, Felix Rey):

Up the ante with this gorgeous, glitzy chrysanthemum ring ($175, nOir jewelry — my go-to for fun, unexpected cocktail rings, which are kind of my signature):

If you’re not into the oversized ring look, or if you want to appear absolutely dripping in jewels, add this crystal link bracelet ($125, J. Crew):

Into the super-femme look?  Test drive this 1970s chic Halston Heritage gown ($455, Shopbop):

Pull out all the stops with these show-stopping swarovski crystal studded peep toes by Rodo ($880, Forzieri):

Definitely glass slipper status.  You could add this chunky pearl Lee Angel ring to further beef up your heavenly angel look ($66, Shopbop):

I’m also kind of enamored of this clustered pearl-and-pink stone ring — the wiring accent adds some interesting edge ($114, Couture Candy):

If you’re into the pearls (very opera house), I like the idea of a drapey black dress (this Ella Moss “Haze” Dress — on sale for $114 at Saks — could be lovely):

And add this lovely little pearl-encrusted clutch ($50, Aldo):

And because nowadays you can get away with shorter dresses in the evening, consider this lovely navy-and-black Adam Lippes number (on sale for $289, Adam):

For some reason, navy-on-black bespeaks subtle sophistication to me.  The artful folds of the dress above really transform the dress into something novel and unexpected.  Don’t you die over it?  This full-skirted, asymmetrical mini by Thread Social is also evening-ready, despite its abbreviated hem (on sale for $325, Thread Social):

The sparkles and length keep it youthful, but it’s still romantically elegant.  And now — if you want to relive a moment of true movie magic — let’s take our cues from Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

You’ll need a siren red dress — this Valentino stretch jersey is a perfect update ($765, TheOutnet):

Add some movie star white evening gloves and some mega-wattage jewelry (below, $193, Kate Spade):

Ooh la la!

Mod Squad

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Home Decor, Jewelry, Shoes on June 2, 2010 at 2:33 pm

As I prepare to outfit the newlywed nest, I’ve been spending some QT with various home design and decor websites and blogs.  I continually find myself turning to Jonathan Adler for his slightly kitschy, mod aesthetic.  Incorporating a piece or two of his seems like just the way to balance out my otherwise formal, feminine inclinations.  When I laid eyes on his funky, op-art set of needlepoint pillows ($165, Jonathan Adler), I felt totally inspired:

Somewhat refreshing and dramatic given the predominance of grays, camels, and other muted tones we’ve been seeing on the runways.  I’m instantly reminded of Twiggy and Edie Sedgwick and all of those doe-eyed, skinny-legged icons of the mid ’60s.  Twiggy, for example — say what you will about what she did for the modeling industry (she was a willowy 90 lbs and instantly earned cover girl status, transforming the standards by which all future models were…well, weighed) — had a cool look that, when properly translated to contemporary times, could really elevate the ordinary to the extraordinary.  (Refer to Exhibit A: Sienna Miller, the neo-Twiggy.)

How to adapt the mod-tastic look?  Let’s begin with a retro-chic trapeze dress.  Harvey Faircloth’s crisp-yet-dramatic version would be right on the money.  They seem to have removed their eBoutique capabilities at the moment, but I’m guessing they are preparing to either release a new collection soonish or are simply performing routine maintenance:

Though the ladies of the 60s wore little Mary Janes with chunky short heels, I’d stick to pointy toed flats and some classic wayfarers to round out the look.  The London Sole flats I featured in yesterday’s post (pictured here as well) are perfecto:

For a splashier take on the mod squad look, consider this polka dot dream of a dress by Michael Kors (on sale for $553, The Outnet):

Love the modified halter neck.  It’d look killer at work with your pointy-toed Audrey Hepburn flats and this chicly textured Kate Spade bag ($355, Kate Spade):

Push the look further with some white frames (Ray Bans, $135, 80s Purple):

With polka dots on the brain, take your mod self out for a night on the town with this to-die-for Prabal Gurung gown ($1,430, Kirna Zabete):

Are you swooning yet?  UGH, love.  (Gurung hails from Bill Blass; his eponymous line is relatively new to the fashion world, first debuting in 2009.  Love his stuff.)  I’d strut around in it, accenting with this fun little pom-pommed clutch by Sondra Roberts ($148, Nordstrom):

Alternately, slip on this equally swoon-worthy Jay Ahr number (on sale for $804, The Outnet):

For a real Twig-tastic look, pair with this dangling disco ball earrings by NOIR Jewelry, a favorite costume jeweler of mine ($75, Kitson):

I’ll admit I’m a tad intimidated by them, and would probably go the cocktail ring route, but — daring fashionistas out there: go get ‘em, tiger!  For those on my end of the spectrum: I’m a click away from purchasing this fun little bauble by Kate Spade ($65, Bloomingdale’s):

For daytime, I’d throw on this LBTD (littleblackTEEdress) by Alexander Wang ($85, Kirna Zabete):

And then add this funky little “Must Love Dots” Kate Spade bag ($175, Kate Spade) and a pair of oversized shades ($10, 80s Purple):

Then I’d throw on a couple of bold, graphic black-and-white bangles (the first — $10, ASOS; the second — $48, Nordstrom):

I’d probably stick to the pointy-toed black patent flats, but Walter Steiger’s collection of stubby-heeled boots and pumps would be right on trend:

Steiger is a Paris-only man: he owns two boutiques that carry his line of excellently-crafted shoes and handbags, one on Fouburg St. Honore and the other on Boulevard St. Germain.  Very exclusive, very chic.  (Code: very expensive.)  The t-dress above is extra versatile, so you might also consider dressing it up with some heels, an updo, and this retro-cool Kate Spade minaudiere ($225, Kate Spade):

Yellow was, after all, favored by Twiggy herself:

Add on a pair of faux eyelashes (Shu Uemera is supposedly the best of the best) and these House of Harlow sunburst studs to complete ($35, Singer22):

The earrings would look just as perfect when paired with this little 60s-throwback by Miss Me (aptly called “The Mod Dress,” $92, Miss Me):

Love the way it’s styled in the picture here — simple patent flats and oversized, jet-black bangles.  Ideal.  And, now, I know it’s far from winter (it’s been hothotHOT in D.C.), but how perfect is this little collarless wool wonder by Moschino ($962, The Outnet)?

Throw on over some black or (if you dare) colored tights and patent flats and you are set.  Mia Farrow would have easily worn something similar in her day.

When you’re done running your errands, head home to your swingin’ 60s pad, complete with this 1963 Eero Aarnio ball chair ($6,860, Hive Modern):

Curl up in it with your (super-retro) phone — $60 at Velocity:

It’s Austin Powers meets hipster meets Andy Warhol.  And I like it.

Europa!

In Accessories, Cocktail Dresses, Shoes, Sundresses on June 1, 2010 at 5:50 pm

Sorry for the delay in posting — along with the rest of the Eastern seaboard, I headed to the Delaware beaches for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.  One of the little ladies on my trip is Europe-bound in a matter of days, and had asked: “What do I wear for a three-week tour of Western Europe?”  How does an American avoid looking like…well, an American?  I have a couple of “do’s” and “don’t”s I’ll go over prior to cherry-picking some must-haves.

1.  Avoid tourist gear.  Likely intuitive for most of you, but I would be remiss if I didn’t include this no-no.  “Tourist gear” includes white sneakers, fanny packs, cameras-around-the-neck, stiff-brimmed baseball caps, and t-shirts with group names plastered all over them.  Fairly obvious.  (And that includes you, Carrie Bradshaw.)

2.  Less obvious: avoid shorts.  Europeans tend to wear shorts only at the beach or resort and — occasionally — when involved in some sort of athletic activity, which is (at least in my experience) fairly rare.  Wear pants somewhat sparingly as well — skinny-leg jeans and cigarette pants are permissible (the JBrands below are my absolute favorite pair of jeans — $180, Net-A-Porter), but you won’t see much bootleg over there.  My fiance just returned from a trip to the Baltic States and reported that all the girls were wearing dhoti pants (much to his confusion — he also called them “weird, super-low-crotch pants”).  I can’t speak for everyone, but I’m thinking this might be  a trend to skip, regardless of how fashion-forward you’d like to appear to native Europeans.

3.  Layer, layer, layer.  This was the first thing I learned from French women when I lived abroad.  So many of them have this magic ability to layer on seemingly mismatched light separates, look fabulous and “together,” and still look unfussy.  I would reach for lots of breezy, somewhat loose-fitting separates, including gauzy scarves (adore the Franco Ferrari  scarf below — $138, La Garconne), drapey light cotton sweaters, and so forth.

4.  Lean towards the neutrals.  This is somewhat subjective, I suppose, but I always felt a bit more under-the-radar / a bit less American when I wore neutrals abroad.  (Check out the utilitarian-chic dress by Zero and Maria Cornejo below — $414, La Garconne.)  When my fiance landed in Lyon, he wore preppy pastel polos, madras shorts, nantucket red pants, and so forth — and stuck out in a major way.  (Insert looks of confusion upon the brow-knitted faces of French women — “oh, la…qu’est-ce que c’est, ca?”)  I love that he fearlessly rocked his personal getup there, but if you’re looking for ways to blend in, I’d suggest leaving your candy-colored polo dress collection at home.

And now for some creme-de-la-creme fashion picks — the things I’d want to bring if I were headed abroad.  For daytime museum-going and sight-seeing?  This uber-chic, very of-the-moment, ladylike black romper ($78, TopShop):

Pair with killer fringed black sandals (or any other strappy gladiators will do).  These Sigerson Morrisons are bananas ($425, La Garconne):

Pair with enorma-shades (below, by Oliver Peoples) or classic Ray Bans:

I’d just as readily throw on this little nautical-inspired number ($69, Mango):

Something about it is just off-kilter enough to make it more Parisian chic than Nantucket preppy.  Pair with some nonchalant-cool brown leather sandals (these are also by Mango — $79, Mango):

Add on a quirky-cool cross-body studded bag ($128, J. Crew):

(If you’re uncertain about the cross-body style, just tie the strap shorter and wear under the arm.)  Alternately, throw on some versatile gray snakeskin flats (these are by House of Harlow — $178, Shopbop):

And add a lightweight, soft gray crinkle cardigan (this one by Splendid — $92, PiperLime):

I like the idea of off-setting the crisp white fabric with shades of soft gray — you might even pile on this lovely greige carry-all by JPK Paris (on sale for $129, Nordstrom):

Alternately, go Audrey Hepburn chic in a Breton-striped shirt.

You can find them all over the place, but I’m loving this cashmere-blend Theory version for a cooler afternoon cafe stop (on sale for $140, Net-A-Porter):

Pair with cropped black cigarette pants (or jeans — these are the J Brands featured earlier) and tidy little black flats ($245, London Sole) for a literal look:

Even though I very much prefer the ladylike to the edgy, I’d consider roughing the look up a bit with this biker-chic Rebecca Minkoff ($575, Rebecca Minkoff):

Chic-ly unexpected.  For those of you who prefer to “color within the lines” (I’m there with ya most of the time), this gold-accented Kate Spade lovely would be ideal and super-versatile (on sale for $316, Zappos):

I’d probably wind up sticking to slightly-off-beat printed dresses, however.  I love this little Dolce Vita “Delilah” dress ($165, Dolce Vita):

Pair with these little white flats by Bloch ($185, Net-A-Porter) or kickin flat espadrilles by Paloma Barcelo ($180, Net-A-Porter):

Check out Dolce Vita’s dress shop for alternative Euro-chic options.

These are just some pointers to help you get packin’ for your trip across the pond.  The bottom line is that you can get away with a lot in Europe, but you’re safest with layered neutrals, comfy flats for sight-seeing, and slightly off-kilter, nearly-vintage prints.  BON VACANCES!
